SUMMARY:Devils Canyon
DESCRIPTION:DETAILS:\n· Hike leader volunteer(s): Dave.\n· Meet: 200 yards before Chilao Visitor Center on Highway #2\n· Distance: ~ 6.75 Miles total (out and back style)\n· Elevation gain: ~ 1\, 745\n· Time: Approximately 3-4 hours hiking including a couple of 15 minute breaks.\n· Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n· Dogs: Are OK but watch for ticks.\n· Hiking Poles – recommended\n· Restrooms – Trailhead.\n· Adventure Pass –Yes. \nDescription: A prominent sign marks the trailhead. The trail loses no time descending the hillsides as we pass through a forest of pine\, alder\, and cedar with great views of Devil’s Canyon and the surrounding mountains. Our trail crosses many small creeks. All the creeks come together so we can enjoy the sound of water dancing over boulders and cascades. We turn around at a backpacker campsite. \nHike Leader Notes: This is a very beautiful hike but the trail is brushy and has many fallen trees. To pass by the fallen trees you will need to climb over\, around\, or crawl under them. With the water comes bugs\, be sure to bring a bug net. Because of the brushy trail ticks could be a concern. On my pre-hike I did a tick check ever hour and found none. The hike out is mostly uphill but the trail has a nice grade and shouldn’t be a problem. \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. Any guest that you wish to invite should join the Community Hiking Club (CHC) to participate. Depending on water flow\, we may cross streams. As always\, people may slip and fall\, encounter poison oak\, snakes\, etc. on this hike. This event may be cancelled due to inclement weather at the start of the hike. \nESSENTIAL GEAR:\nHiking boots and poles.\nClothing layers recommended.\nSnacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets.\nHat and sunscreen. \nAdditional Hiking and Survival Gear Recommendations (link) \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 3/4\, Intermediate (see chart below) – mainly for the fallen trees and the uphill section. \nCHC HIKE RANKING SCALE:\n1. Intermediate/Advanced: 7-12 miles\, up to 3000 feet elevation gain.\n5. Advanced: 10-17 miles\, 3000 feet or more elevation gain. \nTRAILHEAD LOCATION:\nA prominent sign marks the trailhead about Angeles200 yards before you reach Chilao Visitor Center turn off.\nClick for map to the trailhead \nFILE DOWNLOADS\nWe highly recommend the All Trails app be installed on your cell phones and/or you print a copy of the trail map so you can personally navigate the trail if you need to. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. SUMMARY:Anza Borrego Not So Epic (3rd day optional)
DESCRIPTION:This is Jerry Schad’s Indian Canyon / Borrego Palm Canyon Traverse.\nBack in 2021 I made this a loop and it may have been a little bit too epic 🙂\n(https://www.meetup.com/sandiegobackpackers/events/269364126/?eventOrigin=group_calendar) \nThis trip starts from third crossing. First night camp is Bennis Bowl. If you want to do a nice beginner trip you can join us for the first night. Or you can do the fun part and hike up Indian Canyon and down Borrego Palm Canyon. This is a car shuttle. \n“This is a grand tour of one of Anza-Borrego’s most remote\, rugged\, and beautiful areas. In the midsection of this trip\, you’ll pass through a pristine wilderness where the tracks of a mountain lion are far more common than the impressions of a lug-soled boot.”\nJerry Schad – Afoot and Afield: San Diego Country: A Comprehensive Hiking Guide \nDifficulty: Strenuous Backpacking Trip\nType of hike: Difficult Class 3. Rugged cross country hiking. Streams\, boulders\, dry falls\, brush\, loose rock\, etc. \nThis hike is a bit of a bushwhack. Long pants and long sleeves highly recommended! I will bring shears to trim cats claw 🙂 \nWeather \nDay 1 (Saturday)\nMeet at the corner of Montezuma Valley Road and Palm Canyon Dr.\n33.25645\, -116.39856\nShuttle to the closure of Coyote Canyon Rd.\n33.36880\, -116.42124\nDistance: 5.6mi\nElevation Gain/Loss: 1100’/0′\nHike up Coyote Canyon from the road closure\, to Sheep Canyon\, to Indian Canyon. There is water in Coyote Canyon and Indian Canyon.\nGAIA Route \nDay 2 (Sunday)\nDistance: 7.2mi\nElevation Gain/Loss: 3200’/3400′\nHike up ridge from Indian Canyon to Palm Mesa (sadly no palm trees there). Descend down north fork of Borrego Palm Canyon to the middle fork. There is water in the middle fork and lovely bathtub to soak in.\nWe may decide to camp a couple miles earlier at the merge of the north and middle fork depending on how people are feeling.\nThis is a difficult hike. If you’re not up to it there should be no problem to turn back and go back to the first camp. Please do not overexert yourself.\nGAIA Route \nDay 3 (Monday)\nDistance: 4.7mi\nElevation Gain/Loss: 0’/1450′\nDescend the rest of Borrego Palm Canyon to the cars.\nGAIA Route \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! This is an advanced hike. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at an intermediate pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs allowed. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station & Rattle Snake Road. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Los Padres - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasy Option: 2.4 miles\, 285′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nWe enter the Los Padres trail through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and continue climbing up. We’ll come to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll come to a split off to the right. We’ll take this split and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to the “Giants Picnic Table”\, which I call that because its parts are super thick. \nWe’ll stop for a social event and share snacks and drinks for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nEasy Option: In the reverse direction as the rest of the group\, go 350′ to the end of Los Padres Dr.\, left on S. Moorpark Rd. for 1000′. Enter the trail and follow it for about a mile. It will curve left and you will arrive at the social event. \nHike Distance: 3.5 miles\, easy option 2.4 miles.\nGain: 600′\, each option 285′.\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as a link on this line. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK). \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, or\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or\, scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \nWild Cucumber\nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. SUMMARY:Las Virgenes Canyon/Cheeseboro Ridge - a Gentler Hike
DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll head over to the east end of the Conejo Valley for our hike. This is similar to the hike that Steve led a couple of weeks ago\, but it has a different starting point at the end of Las Virgenes. The hills are amazingly green right now\, so we’ll enjoy them again. We’ll start at the Las Virgenes Canyon trailhead at the north end of Las Virgenes Canyon. The trail begins with a steady climb up from Las Virgenes Canyon before climbing over to Cheeseboro Ridge. The climb will be a bit steep\, but we’ll be on a good fireroad. We head south on the Cheeseboro Ridge Edison Rd before completing the clockwise loop back down to the start. Along the way we’ll see some great vistas into Las Virgenes Canyon\, Ahmanson Ranch and Cheeseboro Canyon. \nStatistics: 5.7 miles with about 1000’ of climbing. \nDirections: From the 101 in Agoura\, turn north on Las Virgenes Canyon Road. Drive about 1.5 miles to the end of the road and park on the left side of the road. The trailhead is marked clearly. There are no restrooms. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike hosts are volunteers and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \n\nSorry\, no dogs.\nThere are no “Plus One’s” on this hike. SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.6 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nHardest option: 5 miles\, 1200′ gain\, Intermediate \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.8 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock. Those that want the hardest option\, continue for another 0.5 miles and 250′ gain to the end of the trail. Head back down the same way to the social event spot. \nAt the social event spot\, we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Simi Valley and will share snacks and beverages. \nThere is really no way to get lost on this hike\, so everybody will move along at whatever pace they want. \nHike (click this link for a pic)\nDistance: 4.0 miles (1.5 mi for easy option\, 5.0 mi for hardest option)\nGain: 950′ (400′ for easy option\, 1200′ for hardest option)\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate (Fit Beginer for easy option\, Intermediate for hardest option)\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: The entire first half is incline. Some of the trail is rugged sandstone. Some of the trail is covered in large gravel.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Encelia\nAka\, California Bush Sunflower\, California Brittlebush\, Coast Sunflower\, El Dorado. \nCenter is brown. When the center is yellow\, it is Brittlebush\, from the brittleness of the stems. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard\nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). It grows everywhere along the sides of the trail\, often having to be cut back during trail maintenance. \nDid you know that cabbage\, mustard greens\, collard greens\, kale\, broccoli\, cauliflower\, brussels sprouts\, and prepared mustard\, are all from different parts of the wild mustard plant? \nDirections\nChumash Trail\n3200 Flanagan Dr.\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.293497\, -118.671176 \nFrom CA-118\nI-118\, exit Yosemite.\nNorth on Yosemite for 1.3 miles.\nRight (east) on Flanagan Dr. for 08. miles.\nContinue until the street ends and park. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

Most of the elevation gain occurs between miles 2-3\, some segments are very steep. This is partly on a fire road and trail. Our destination is an historic strip-mining operation that started in 1929 and ceased in 1935. Limestone was mined here for an extremely pure form of Calcium Carbonate (Calcite CaCO3). You’ll find abandoned mining equipment with large boulders of both Limestone and a lot of Fossils as we climb the last hill to the mine. The trail will end at the mining site with the largest mining equipment abandoned there. We’ll return on a loop path (see map below) to return to the trailhead. \nDETAILS:\n• Hike leader volunteer(s): Michele E\n• Meet: Las Llajas Trailhead at 7:45 am\, departure at 8:00 am sharp\n• Distance: Approximately 6.1 miles.\n• Elevation gain: Approximately 1\,053 feet.\n• Time: Approximately 3.5 hours hiking including a snack break.\n• Conditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\n• Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.\n• Restrooms: None.\n• Adventure Pass: Not Required \nIMPORTANT NOTES: We’ll hike at a brisk pace and ask everyone to stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon to Elliott Mountain and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook Group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nThe trail up Elliot Mountain was built May 2015. The mountain\, a bench and the trail are named after Burt Elliot who was very active with Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Burt died of cancer in the Spring of 2014. He was the go-to guy for all things Conejo Open Space. \n👉https://youtu.be/MsTPZO3mz84 video \nWe began exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “The Weekday Hikers.”. At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. From 2008 to 2011 Hill Canyon was the location of our unofficial club house. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting the use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nHike is appx 9 miles with appx 1500 ft total ascent and rated MEDIUM+. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nBring 2 Qt water\, lugsoles\, snacks\, sunscreen\, hat \nDIRECTIONS\nFree park in dirt lot next to TO Household Hazardous Waste Facility \n“If you’re early\, you’re on time. If you’re on time\, you’re late. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up” \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the HWD ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER – and https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/pages/322667/Liability_Waiver/

Participants are expected to arrange their own transportation to Avalon and from Two Harbors; ferry tickets are estimated $42 each way. \nImportant notes: The Catalina Express Ferry prohibits any flammable items including camp stove fuel canisters and firewood. Fuel canisters are available for purchase in Avalon. Hermit Gulch is close enough to Avalon that you may have dinner in Avalon on Saturday if you want. \nAssumption of Risk and Waiver of Liabilities\nAttendee acknowledges that the area over which this permit is granted is a wild lands area\, containing\, without limitation\, wild bison\, rattlesnakes\, and other wildlife\, rough terrain\, trails and roads\, and other conditions which are intrinsic to the environment and locale\, all of which may be dangerous and /or hazardous to life\, limb\, and property.\nBison are wild animals.\nBison are large wild animals that can cause serious injury and even death. They can accelerate quickly to 35 mph and jump over 6 feet. Never approach\, touch\, or attempt to feed bison. If you feel threatened\, identify an escape route. Place a large object between you and the bison (tree\, rock\, vehicle)\, and give the bison a path to avoid you. Never box in a bison with people being both in front and behind it.\nAttendee voluntarily accepts and assumes all such risks of personal injury\, wrongful death\, or property damage.\nAttendee understands that this is a release of attendee’s right to sue. \nThis trip will be conducted at a relaxed pace with no more than 12 miles each day. Your trip leader walks slowly\, likes to stop and breathe and appreciate nature\, and take pictures. There will be time for side trips\, swimming in the ocean\, etc. (Note – the ocean is very cold this time of year). \nHike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! This is an intermediate hike. Make sure you are in good enough physical shape for the distance\, elevation changes\, and terrain. The hike leaders in this group aren’t professional hike leaders. By signing up for these events\, you agree not to hold the Meetup organizers responsible for whatever happens to you on these events. The hiking group does not certify the expertise of the organizers\, the event or assistant organizers (hike leaders) and…We are NOT responsible for any possible losses or injuries.

SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The trail is an awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. We will start from the trailhead which follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although the marine layer has been pretty prominent this summer.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1000’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road into La Jolla Canyon. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.

SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 mi\, 500′ gain\, beginner\nEasier option: 1.5 mi\, 125′ gain\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop\, (the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. \nWe’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. After about 0.2 miles\, there will be a split. We can go either way because they rejoin after about 100 yards\, but for this route\, we’ll go left. \nAfter another half mile\, the route makes a turn to the right. Those that want the super-easy route should continue straight for 100 yards to a log\, where they can wait about 45 min for the rest of us to return for the social event. \nThe rest of the group will follow the trail to the right and continue for about 1.2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, travel about 20 yards west\, and head back in on a different trail. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll reconnect with the original trail for the return. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 yards\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event snack and beverage share. \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the left and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. Click HERE for route. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac\nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \nDirections:\nLimekiln Canyon Trail\nPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \nFrom the 118\nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.\nLeft (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.\nTrailhead on the right (north).\nPark on either side of the street. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Easy\nPace: 2.5 mph\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.\nTrail: Varied. Good condition. \nWhat to Bring:\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\n1-2 liters of water.\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability
