DESCRIPTION:Kern Gateway Trail Proposal\nThe Kern Gateway Trail team consists of hikers who love the Kern River Canyon and are working to create a connected trail in the Kern River Canyon. \nJoin us to hear about and explore a spectacular section of the proposed Kern Gateway Trail. We will do a brief presentation about the trail concept and a hike to see a section of the trail. \nThe trail begins with a short but steep climb. If you plan on hiking with us after the presentation\, bring hiking poles\, trail shoes with good tread\, water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and the ten essentials. The hike starts to the right of Stark Creek. \nFor Bakersfield carpoolers\, meet at the Shell gas station on HWY 178 and Commanche by 8:15. We will leave promptly at 8:30 am to give us enough time to arrive at the trailhead before 9:00 a.m. \nOr meet at the trailhead: Park at Stark Creek. SUMMARY:Hike at O'Neill Regional Park + Option for Brunch at Cook's Corner
DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing is approximately 5 miles with 870 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe will begin at the Live Oak Trail trailhead. This is where you will see on the map that the Live Oak Trail hits the paved road. This is the parking lot closest to the Edna Spaulding Trail. (There should also be someone at the gate when you come in that can direct you where to go.) \nWe start by going up Live Oak Trail and up Vista Trail. We will take back Hoffman Homestead Trail\, Coyote Trail\, and back to Live Oak. SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.2 miles\, 900′ gain\, Intermediate. \nThe first part is a steady incline\, followed by a rolling trail to our destination. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. There are no super steep sections. \nThis hike takes us to a secret spot below a large rock formation. Naturally into the side of the rock is a half-globe carved out of it\, giving us a quasi-cave area to sit and have our social event. \nThis is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. The parkland provides a key migration corridor and perennial water source to a full complement of large mammals including black bear\, mountain lion\, mule deer\, bobcat\, American badger\, grey fox\, long-tailed weasel\, ring-tailed cat\, and the endangered California Condor. \nNature won’t be the only thing we’ll experience. We may get a chance to meet Ferdinand\, a bull that roams the area and a couple of wild horses. There are lots of old artifacts to explore along the way\, including old ranch houses\, abandoned ranch vehicles\, a dam and much more! SUMMARY:Upper Sycamore Canyon Loop - Gentler Hike. Red Flag Warning Cancels
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot\, goes down to the bridge on Sycamore Canyon asphalt\, but then turns up the canyon alongside Upper Sycamore Creek. Along the way\, we’ll be in the shade of Boney Mountain while we climb\, doing a handful of easy water crossings and (if we’re lucky this late in the season)_ finding a number of wildflowers along the way. We’ll get to the Old Boney Trail\, and climb back up and out\, taking a few detours along the way. \nIt is about 5 miles with an elevation loss and gain of approximately 750’. If you want a little more distance\, you’re welcome to take the short excursion to the waterfall\, but there’s more poison oak there. \nIf the weather forecast continues to call for a red flag warning\, the hike will be canceled. Please check Thursday morning before you drive over. \nDirections: Take 101 Freeway to Lynn Road. Echoing its not-so-distant past of ranching\, the rolling hills and shady canyons are popular with equestrians. Before the ranchers\, Chumash Indians and grizzly bears tromped out the slender trails in the native grasses that became today’s open fire roads. Rabbits\, bobcats\, owls\, hawks\, deer\, and coyotes still call the sycamores\, oaks\, streams\, and sulfur springs of the canyons home. Cheeseboro Canyon is home to the largest concentration of birds of prey outside of Alaska\, as well as the Valley Oak\, the largest oak trees in the US (possibly the world!). \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/4/e/2/c/event_85460012.jpeg \nOur 7 mile hike will carve a loop pattern out of the network of trails and connect Cheeseboro Canyon to adjacent Palo Comado Canyon before returning us to our cars. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa trail loops hike ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:“Satwiwa” is Chumashan and directly translates to “the bluffs\,” which can also translate to “higher places\,” and is the Chumashan name used for a former village near the current culture center. We will start from the parking lot and continue to the Ranch Overlook Trail as we turn left at the juncture of Sycamore Canyon Fire Road. The east trail is moderately flat and you will see bluffs to the west leading to a moderate hill. At the peak\, you’ll have awesome views of Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, which descend from Satwiwa to the Pacific Ocean along a historic Chumash trade route\, as well as towards Boney. We will continue hiking the Satwiwa Loop Trail on the other side when we return to the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road and head back to the car. \nThis is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000’. \nDirections: \nExit 101 at Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks. Go west for 5.5 miles\, and turn left\, under the Rancho Sierra Vista arch\, into the National Park. DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nEasier option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. DESCRIPTION:The hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. If you’ve signed up for 2025 WTC\, take advantage of this training opportunity. \nBring water and sun protection\, and wear non-slip shoes (trail runners or hiking shoes are great). There are porta-potties at the beginning and flush toilets half way through the hike. \nTustin PD issues citations to cars parked before 7am\, so if you arrive early\, you can park at Cedar Grove Park and walk up the trail on the west side of the park\, past the elementary school\, to join us on the south entrance of PC. This will add about .75 miles each way to your morning.

We will start at the trailhead at Triunfo Park’s back (2nd) parking lot\, go up to the Los Robles trail and turn left on the Whitehorse trail. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: If you sign up for this hike\, be sure to take yourself off the waitlist for the other hike. \nThis is a second hike for Thursday in a similar area to the other hike\, but starting at the end of Moorpark Road. We will meet in the parking lot at the end of S. Moorpark and Greenmeadow Avenue. The hike will head WEST on the Los Robles trail\, turning around at the 2 1/2 mile marker. This is an IN/OUT hike for a total of 5 miles and around 800 feet elevation gain. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, relaxing hike. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road\, at the end of Moorpark Road turn right onto Greenmeadow and drive about 0.5 miles to the parking lot at the corner of Greenmeadow and Moorpark Road. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. DESCRIPTION:California State Parks has asked me to lead a hike for their annual First Day Hikes. So join us for a picturesque loop hike into movie & TV history in the heart of Malibu Creek State Park. \nOur first stop is Ronald Reagan’s Yearling Row Ranch\, now part of MCSP. During the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” We will be hiking on trails that Reagan himself built. \nOur next stop will be Century Lake\, the location of the cliff-diving scene from the movie Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and many other movies and TV shows. We’ll take a snack break there before heading into the site of Ape City\, depicted in the 1968 classic Planet of the Apes. \nAfter some monkeying around we’ll head back to the ranch passing Reagan’s pit BBQ where he entertained his Hollywood friends. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. DESCRIPTION:HIKE DETAILS:\nLet’s use our 2024 passes one more time. This Tuesday hike will be a bit gentler. This hike will go from the beach up to the picnic table on the fire road\, approximately 5.5 miles. Most of the hike is exposed\, but hopefully we will have some marine layer. No dogs. \nWe will meet in the Day Use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground. We will start off along the main Sycamore Canyon road and turn up to the fire road where we will climb up to the picnic table. We will then follow the fire road back down to the parking lot\, so out and back. \nDirections: \nWe will be meeting at the Sycamore Canyon Campground and day use parking area on Pacific Coast hwy. This trailhead and parking area is about a mile south from the La Jolla Canyon Parking area where we go to hike the Ray Miller Trail and just across from the campground. \nParking is available in the campground for $12 (or free with a State Parking Permit). This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. DESCRIPTION:Learn New Skills-Make New Friends-Experience New Adventure\nDetails\nInformational Posting Only – See Website at www.wildernesstravelcourse.org\nINFORMATIONAL POSTING ONLY\nwww.wildernesstravelcourse.org\nDear Group Members\, particularly the recent swell of new\, never-been-backpacking-before-but-want-to-start members: There is a great Sierra Club opportunity that is about to begin….an opportunity that only happens one time each year and it is one of the best outdoor learning experiences the Sierra Club has to offer. This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. You will acquire skills in trip planning\, preparation\, equipment and wilderness safety to take you into the backcountry in all seasons\, beyond roads and trails with new friends that share your interest in the outdoors. \nAgain\, the course runs only one time each year and takes place in Southern California in four locations as follows: Long Beach/South Bay (Wednesdays beginning January 8th); San Gabriel Valley (Tuesdays beginning Jan 14th); West Los Angeles (Wednesdays beginning Jan 22nd; Orange County (Tuesdays beginning Jan 28th);\nThe four geographic areas fill up well in advance of the class start date so register early. \nFOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO REGISTER FOR THE COURSE GO TO: www.wildernesstravelcourse.org (http://ww.wildernesstravelcourse.org/)
