SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy - Annual Cross Lit Hike
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 700′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasier Option: 2.4 mi\, 530′ gain. (1343 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065\, or 89 La Paz Ct\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 to save another 500′ distance). \nA special treat: The cross will be lit! The Rotary Club lights the cross for the week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday\, and our group has been doing this hike every year since the group started. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nSunset time is 7:28p\, with Civil Twighlight ending about 30 minutes after that. \nCivil Twighlight: When the sun is between 0 and 6 degrees below the horizon. The sky is still bright enough for most outdoor activities that require light. \nOur hike up will be in daylight and we should arrive near sunset. \nThe Hike\nRated “Easy Intermediate” due to the 1 mile continuous incline that can get exhausting\, but a fit beginner can easily complete it. \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave. Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nFor those that want a little easier option start at this address: 1366 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nAt the top by the cross\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks. \nEasy Option: 2.25 mi\, 650′ gain.\nJust a little easier. Park at the traihead: 4 Washburn St\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. DESCRIPTION:Let’s go to Mexico! \nThis is not a backpacking trip.\nThis is a camp-out in Guadalupe Canyon Oasis. \nYou must have a valid passport or passport ID that is not within the window of expiration to participate in this trip. \nThis trip requires caravanning 3\, reliable\, high clearance 4×4 vehicles and Mexican auto insurance. \n*** \nDetails:\nWe will be tent camping at a reserved site in Guadalupe Canyon Oasis.\nThe best site available! \nOur site has it all:\nA huge palapa that boasts scenic views of a dry lake bed and the canyon below!\nA stone fireplace to keep us warm while we stargaze.\nThe only campsite that has both a private hot spring and a swimming pool! \n*** \n10 people maximum\, previous trip attendance with San Diego Backpackers preferred. +1’s are welcome before we hit maximum occupancy. DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner 4.3 miles\, 480′ gain.\nEasier Option: 4 miles\, 230′ gain. \nWe walk a mostly flat section for 1.1 mi. to the 2nd junction. \nEasier option: Continue straight for 3/4 mi.\, left at the split\, right after another 500′\, arriving at some picnic tables on the right after another 750′. \nRegular route: Left\, heading up a switch back. Right at the top\, and continue for 3/4 mi.\, turning right where it ends. Head down to the bottom\, left at the split. After 750′\, we arrive at some picnic tables on the right. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please bring something to eat and drink to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. SUMMARY:Green\, Green\, Green!! Half New Millennium Loop
DESCRIPTION:I’ve lived here 36 years and never have I seen these hills so green! Let’s hike a portion of the New Millennium Trail in Calabasas to enjoy the feeling of renewal! We will start at the Bark Park in Calabasas\, following a narrow single track trail up to the loop\, and turn right (counter clockwise) to do the back side of this trail\, through the green and wildflowers. We’ll climb up above the homes in the inside gate of The Oaks\, the high rent part of town\, to a lovely 360 degree vista point overlooking Mulholland Highway\, Calabasas Peak\, the ocean and Calabasas. Then we’ll turn around and do it all again the other direction. \nOut and back\, we’ll travel 8 miles and 1200′ gain. The trail gets quite narrow with soft brush and mustard…might wear long pants if you’re inclined. \nMeeting place is the Calabasas Bark Park at 4232 Las Virgenes Rd. SUMMARY:Santa Cruz Island Day Trip with Island Packers
DESCRIPTION:Nancy and I are scheduling another trip to Santa Cruz Island. It’s becoming a yearly thing. I just bought my ticket from Ventura Harbor to The Scorpion Cove landing. I booked the 10:00 AM departure (OUTBOUND)\, as there were more spaces on that boat. We will return on the 3:00 PM boat (INBOUND). You have to book OUTBOUND and INBOUND separately. \nThere will be no limit from us and you can bring as many friends as you like. Please book your passage before you sign-up with Trailblazers\, as the boat may fill-up. You don’t need to sign-up your friends on meet-up. \nThe trip by boat lasts a little over an hour leaving Ventura Harbor at 10:00 AM. They want us to be at the dock 45 minutes prior to departure (9:15 AM). Once we arrive on the Island\, we’ll hike 2.5 miles out to Potato Harbor via Cavern Point\, and return along Potato Harbor Road. When we reach the camp ground we’ll have lunch. The hike is very moderate and should return us in plenty of time for some sightseeing at the historic ranch\, museum\, or extra hiking into Scorpion Canyon. Our return trip leaves Scorpion Anchorage at 3:00 PM. \nYou must bring your own WATER and FOOD. There are no concessions on the island. SUMMARY:Wildlife Tunnel Loop - Intermediate. Easier Option: Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate – 3 miles\, 1000′ gain\nEasier Option – Fit Beginner\, 1.4 miles\, 525′ gain. \nThis hike is relatively short\, but the middle portion is a rugged and continuous incline for 1 mile with about 700′ of gain. Even though we’ll be taking this trail at the pace of a social hike\, beginners may find the intermediate option to be too hard. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until we reach the wildlife tunnel. \nThis is a tunnel underneath the CA-118 freeway\, built so that animals can cross. We’ll regroup here\, then continue up a strenuous and rugged climb for 1 mile until we reach the Rocky Peak Fire Rd. We’ll regroup again\, then turn left for 500′ until we reach the Hummingbird Trail. \nWe’ll find a couple large rocks and a bench there. We’ll have a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, then head down the Rocky Peak Fire Road until it ends at the CA-118 freeway. We’ll then cross the freeway back to our cars. \nEasier Option: Hike up Rocky Peak Trail (a gravel fire road) from the Rocky Peak trailhead for 0.7 miles to the Hummingbird bench. This is about 1/3 up Rocky Peak. You’ll be following the posted route\, counter-clockwise. No turns. This is the same route up\, we’ll all be taking back down. \nInteresting Notes:\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume to Latigo ~
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we go up and over Kanan Dume Rd and hike to Latigo Canyon Rd. This hike is only 5 about miles with about 900’ gain and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone trail. There should be wildflowers. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road\, there is a bit of a climb at first and then it levels out\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.5 miles and up 900 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. Along the hike\, you can take a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. DESCRIPTION:This will be a figure 8 loop throughout the upper mesa of Rancho Sierra Vista. We will see many California poppies and Mariposa lilies as well as enjoy the green hills. After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages for about 60 minutes. \nEasier Option.\nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, don’t turn right at the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. That same picnic table will be on the right. \nReturn.\nContinue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. SUMMARY:Hike to the Hollywood Sign/Bronson Caves - Mt. Lee Summit
DESCRIPTION:I’m very excited to plan another hike up to the Hollywood Sign and the Bronson Caves. \nThis will take us to the summit of Mt. Lee where we will get the best views of the Hollywood Sign. The total mileage for our journey will be approximately 7 miles. Our elevation change should be about 1\,200 ft. \nWe will meet at the end of Canyon Drive which is where we will park. There will be parking options right at the address listed\, on the left\, and also right before that lot on a dirt patch. \nWe will be on Canyon Drive to start on up the canyon. Once we hit Mulholland Trail we will head left and this will take us to views of the front of the Hollywood Sign. After this we’ll go a short ways up the spiral road up to the summit of Mt. Lee. Once we’ve reach the top\, we’ll head back down to where we started. Once we get to the end\, we’ll go on a slight detour to the Bronson Caves. This is the Batcave from Batman. How cool is that?! \nBring lots of water\, sunscreen\, snacks/food\, jacket\, and anything else you think you’ll need. \nHere is the address (this will take you to the parking lot): 2974 Canyon Drive\, Los Angeles\, CA 90068 \nDogs are allowed on this hike. \nThere is a bathroom in the parking lot. \nPlease ask any questions you may have.

DESCRIPTION:Another grand tour of some of our favorite open spaces and surrounding neighborhoods including Santa Rosa Valley\, Wildwood Park\, Hill Canyon and the star of the this ride\, The Joel McCrea Ranch. \nThe ranch was the beloved home of legendary film actor Joel McCrea and his wife\, actress Frances Dee. On the advice of close friend Will Rogers they established and maintained a working ranch\, raising cattle and farming the land — something to fall back on in case things did not work out in Hollywood. \nThe main house and other structures are significant works of architect John Byers and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The McCrea family donated a significant portion of the ranch to Conejo Recreation and Park District to preserve its history and allow public access. \n🚵‍♂️The ride will be about 30 miles with about 3.5 miles on wide and hard-packed dirt trails. DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: This is a enjoyable hike along the beach and bluffs. Our hike starts at Viola Fields in Carpinteria. The trail takes us to Rincon Beach. Along the way we pass great views of the Pacific Ocean shore line. We descend down to the shore and enjoy a ocean breeze as we walk on the sandy beach collecting shells and enjoying our time. Our hike takes us pass Rincon Point and heading north just short of Bates Beach. We will walk back to Viola Fields and hike to Carpinteria. The wildflowers should be in full bloom. We’ll pass by many more views of the shore line. Then a stop at the seal beach sanctuary. SUMMARY:Hike at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park - Nix Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing will be around 5 miles long with 875 ft. of elevation gain. This will be a loop starting at the parking lot of Nix Nature Center. As you will see on the map\, this is at the main park entrance off of the 133 (Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area). Please reference the map for a detailed location as there aren’t many streets to list for directions. \nThe hike we will be doing will start on the Little Sycamore Canyon Trail. Then we will turn left onto the Serrano Ridge Trail\, then another left onto the Camarillo Canyon Trail. Stop by and say hello — and for a private tour. \nAbout the VC\nThe MCSP Visitor Center (VC) is a historic building and is over 100 years old. Malibu Creek Docents operate the VC. Here you will see a museum representative of the Park’s natural and human history: animals and tracks\, birds\, rocks and fossils\, pictures of flowers\, a model Chumash village display and artifacts\, and movie history. There is a Children’s Nature Room with activities for children of all ages. Maps\, books\, drinks\, apparel and souvenirs are for sale. \nDirections\nVisit at your convenience. After 1/3 mile\, the trail becomes Wildwood Canyon Trail. We continue for another 2/3 mile and cross a bridge just past the Meadows Picnic area. \nWe’ll make a left\, continuing on Wildwood Canyon Trail\, past the Tee Pee Trail\, behind Paradise Falls\, left at the split\, and after about a mile\, Wildwood Canyon Picnic area will be on the left. There will be several tables. \nThis is a potluck picnic. Please bring some food and drinks to share.\nIf your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:This is a second and easier hike for Tuesday. Jaesoon is on vacation. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours\, but this is not a beginner hike. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group\, not too fast and not too slow! \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. SUMMARY:Two Peaks in the Western Plateau
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Conejo Canyons trailhead next to the Thousand Oaks Recycling Center on Conejo Center Drive\, near the end of Rancho Conejo. We’ll walk down the fire road to Hawk Canyon and then we will take Hawk Canyon to Five Points. From Five Points\, we will take the Western Plateau trail up to intersection with the Outlaw Loop trail. We will take the Outlaw Loop trail up to Mt.Elliot. We will take the Lichen trail to the transmitter tower. We will take a short break at the transmitter tower and then take the fire road back to the cars. \nThe total distance of this lollipop hike is about 6.7 miles with approximately 1400′ gain. Some of the sections are rocky; trekking poles may be advisable. \nOn this hike\, you’ll see the Conejo Airfield (honest!)\, Mt. Rex’s backside\, at least two wrecked cars\, lots of fennel\, and maybe a rattlesnake and a tarantula or two.
