It’s just another reason to have fun together!\nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food\, drinks to share.\nIf your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them.\nYou may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly Hike
DESCRIPTION:This is for the slower hikers on Tuesday. Of course anyone can join\, just wait for us at the forks. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes and we will finish in about 2-2 1/2 hours\, but this is not a beginner hike. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group\, not too fast and not too slow! \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). SUMMARY:Fall Into the Gap not the Water- Latigo toward Corral Canyon ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Today we’ll hike the Backbone Trail dreaming of the impending wildflowers. We’ll begin at Latigo Canyon and walk on dirt and stuff and strive to reach the familiar sandstone structures of Mesa Peak Motorway. Along the way\, we’ll cross Castro Crest and descend into Upper Solstice Canyon before we climb toward Mesa Peak Motorway\, at the top of Corral Canyon. There are LOTS OF WATER CROSSINGS!! Bring poles and waterproof boots. \nWe’re starting high\, dipping down\, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we’re accustomed to in this area\, and it happens to be BEAUTIFUL right now. Once on the floor of Upper Solstice\, we’ll “ford” seasonal streams and check for the charred remnants of the previous cover. The climb up to Castro Peak Motorway becomes increasingly rocky\, so poles may prove to be useful. \nWe will return the way we came. \nTotal total distance is 8.4 miles\, with 1650’ of elevation gain. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:4.3 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasier Option: 3.2 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nThe address is not the address of the hike\, but a nearby address that should get you to pass by the trailhead. \nThe “cc” in the title means counter clockwise. We’ll be stopping at various points to regroup. \nWe will start by heading the back way on a mostly flat section from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot to an asphalt road\, then left to the Poopond and trail split. At this point\, if you want a shorter hike\, turn left for 0.6 miles and 220 feet of gain\, arriving at the Rockuzzi on the left. \nOtherwise\, we’ll turn right and make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, make a left heading sharply up for about 100′\, then left on the fireroad for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading up 50 yards and then down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know where it is\, for a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the lot. \nInteresting Notes \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. They were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike\nDistance: 4.3 miles\nGain: 800\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. It is a fire road incline of about 1 mile.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the lot at the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 2/3 point along the hike. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nDirections:\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. SUMMARY:Intro to Cheseboro Ridge Trail - Gentler 5 miles\, 800'
DESCRIPTION:The hills above Calabasas are lush and brilliant green\, benefitting from the recent rains. This out-and-back hike offers a little-used access route to Cheseboro Ridge\, which runs above our typical Sheep Corral hike. A combination of graded gravel and single-track trail ascends steadily to a high point with great visibility to Bell Canyon\, Hidden Hills\, Cheseboro Canyon\, and Mount Boney in the distance. While there are few wildflowers yet in bloom\, last year’s patches of calabash gourds are scattered across the hillsides. \nMy shoes got a little muddy on Sunday when I pre-hiked this\, but by Thursday\, the trail should be firm and dry. \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Morrison Ranch Road Trailhead is NOT at the north end of Las Virgenes\, but rather\, only 6/10 mile north of the 101 interchange\, a half-mile north of the fire station\, and at the northern end of a white fence. Set your GPS for 5526 Las Virgenes Road\, Calabasas. If you’ve got to Thousand Oaks Boulevard\, you’ve gone too far. Look for my Prius on the west side of the street. SUMMARY:Late Morning Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. For a bit of fort history and photos visit the HWD Facebook page \n💦There will be a couple of creek crossings on this hike. SUMMARY:Wendy Trailhead to Olympia Vista - Potluck Hike
DESCRIPTION:5.0 miles\, 640′ gain\, Easy Intermediate \nStarting at the Wendy trailhead we hike about 1/4 mile and take the left fork up the Windmill Trail\, a steep\, but short climb (0.1 miles\, 100 ft gain). At the top of this steep climb we’ll take the right fork down the Wendy-Satwiwa Connector into the grasslands for about another 1/4 mile where we will take the right fork onto the Satwiwa Loop Trail. We’ll hike for about 1/3 mile down to the Satwiwa Native American Indian Cultural Center. \nNext we’ll cross over the paved road and continue along the Rancho Overlook Trail for about 0.8 miles. At this point we’ll take the fork to the left going up a short incline (3/4 mile\, 200 ft elevation gain). Then we’ll take a right turn down to the picnic area. We should be able see the tables under the tree from here. \nOn the return trip we’ll go straight on the Palomino/ Rancho Overlook Trail for about 2 miles back to the Satwiwa Native American Indian Cultural Center. Just past the center\, we’ll take the first left turn (0.1 miles) up the hill along the Wendy Trail back to the cars (0.7 miles). \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food\, drinks to share.\nIf your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them.\nYou may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nAt the turning point\, there is a picnic table in Olympia Farms. We’ll enjoy the great views and enjoy a potluck social event at the top for 60-90 minutes before heading back the way we came. SUMMARY:Saddle Peak/Topanga Lookout Trails ~ Fun Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Saddle Peak Trailhead\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. Then\, we will proceed to Topanga Lookout hike. \nWe will head up the Topanga Tower Motorway which crosses a junction\, (Fossil Ridge Trail/Backbone Trail)\, and continue up the paved road toward the radio towers atop the summit. When a wide dirt trail veers off to the left\, follow this track along the ridge uphill and down to the lookout. The large\, graffiti-covered concrete foundation at the site of the old fire tower offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains and landscape\, wide and far. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about a 5 mile out and back trip with +/- 1000 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue miles to Stunt Road and turn right. SUMMARY:Liberty Canyon Preserve - Phantom/Grasslands Trail Loop - 6.5 mi.\, 1100'
DESCRIPTION:Due to anticipated warm (hot?) weather I will lead us in the opposite direction from the original post. This will allow us to do most of the elevation gain at the beginning while it is cooler. \nOriginal description (read backwards for correct hiking sequence….or just trust me). On this hike we will explore the Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve which makes up the northern quadrant of Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP). We will begin our adventure on the Liberty Canyon Fire Road (aka Las Virgenes trail)\, heading south along the eastern edge of the preserve to the junction of MCSP’s North Grasslands Trail. The Grasslands Trail crosses Mulholland Hwy into the center of the park where we will follow the High Road/Crags Road along picturesque Malibu Creek. Leaving stream level we will climb the ridge above Century Lake and turn off on the always scenic Lookout Trail on our way to the Cistern Trail. The Cistern Trail takes us to our second Mulholland Hwy crossing and the Phantom Trailhead. The Phantom Trail climbs up and over the western edge of Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve and back to our starting point. \nThis grand tour of the Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve and MCSP’s central/northern trail system will clock in at about 6.5 miles and 1100′ elevation gain. \nKathy and I scouted this hike several weeks ago. DESCRIPTION:4.75 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate\nOption for 3 miles\, 300′ gain\, easy. 30 minute wait while group completes the loop back to this spot. \nThis is a link to the route: LINK \nWe start with a 1/4 mile walk from where we park along Cottonwood Dr\, to the trail head. There we make a left and take a relatively flat section and hike for about 3/4 mile. We’ll come to the same tar pits as the Tapo Canyon tar pit hike\, and then continue for another 300 feet to a fire road. \nWe’ll turn left and after about 300′\, we arrive at a trail junction\, which is our social event area. \nEasier Option: Those taking the easier option will wait there for 30-45 minutes for the rest to arrive back. \nRegular Option: Those taking the regular route will make a gradual climb for 1 mile and about 450′ of incline. At the top\, continue straight and then back down for 3/4 mile\, arriving back at the social event area for 30-60 minutes. \nPlease bring food and drink to share. \nNext we’ll turn back and head the way we came down a mostly flat section for about a mile until we arrive back at the trail head. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. \nWe will meet at the main parking lot and hike on the opposite side of Wildwood from where Laurie’s hike is going. We will probably also be a little slower. Of course faster people can join\, just wait for us at the forks. \nHighlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. I doubt there will be any wildflowers this early\, but you never know. \nThe hike will start at Moonridge Trail and cross onto the stagecoach trail towards lizard rock\, then down towards the water treatment plant\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Lizard Rock Loop - Easy Intermediate with easier option
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 600′ gain\nEasier Option\, 3.5 miles\, 460′ gain \nThis is a unique loop through Wildwood Park that takes us to the famous Lizard Rock. \nThere are several extended inclines and a few short but steep climbs that cause this to be rated on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions. I may put down white powder lines so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road through a tunnel\, and turn right on to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll follow for about 1/4 mile\, and then go left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take us to the steps to the trail head parking lot. We’ll regroup. \nThose that want the easier option will cross the parking lot and take main trail (Mesa trail) straight for 1 mile\, turning right at the Lizard Rock trail\, and following it up to Lizard Rock. \nThe rest of us will continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. We make a left\, then the next right to head up to Lizard Rock\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nFinally\, we’ll head along the ridge of Lizard Rock and then down towards the Mesa Trail fire road. We’ll make a left\, and take it all the way back to the main parking lot. DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing will be around 5 miles long with 875 ft. of elevation gain. This will be a loop starting at the parking lot of Nix Nature Center. As you will see on the map\, this is at the main park entrance off of the 133 (Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area). Please reference the map for a detailed location as there aren’t many streets to list for directions. \nThe hike we will be doing will start on the Little Sycamore Canyon Trail. Then we will turn left onto the Serrano Ridge Trail\, then another left onto the Camarillo Canyon Trail. To pass by the fallen trees you will need to climb over\, around\, or crawl under them. With the water comes bugs\, be sure to bring a bug net. Because of the brushy trail ticks could be a concern. On my pre-hike I did a tick check ever hour and found none. First night camp is Bennis Bowl. If you want to do a nice beginner trip you can join us for the first night. Or you can do the fun part and hike up Indian Canyon and down Borrego Palm Canyon. This is a car shuttle. \n“This is a grand tour of one of Anza-Borrego’s most remote\, rugged\, and beautiful areas. There is water in Coyote Canyon and Indian Canyon.\nGAIA Route \nDay 2 (Sunday)\nDistance: 7.2mi\nElevation Gain/Loss: 3200’/3400′\nHike up ridge from Indian Canyon to Palm Mesa (sadly no palm trees there). Descend down north fork of Borrego Palm Canyon to the middle fork. There is water in the middle fork and lovely bathtub to soak in.\nWe may decide to camp a couple miles earlier at the merge of the north and middle fork depending on how people are feeling.\nThis is a difficult hike. If you’re not up to it there should be no problem to turn back and go back to the first camp. DESCRIPTION:The hike will be about 5.7 miles with about 750 ft. of elevation gain. We will start on Peters Canyon Trail and take this to East Ridge View Trail. This is where we will go up Big Red. Then we will continue on this trail until we get to Eucalyptus to loop back.
