SUMMARY:BACKPACKING LEADERSHIP: For Advanced Backpackers
DESCRIPTION:This is a leadership course designed with the intent to grow SDB members into SDB trip leaders. You must be an advanced backpacker to participate in this course. \nSpace is limited\, to join\, please answer the question prompt while joining the waitlist. \nThis course will take place throughout the Summer as different milestones are achieved. The goal of this course is to encourage growth in leadership and enhance backpacking skills that are necessary to lead trips for SDB. \nAbout Me:\nI am not a professional guide or backpacking instructor.\nI’ve been backpacking since 2017 and joined San Diego Backpackers in 2020. I lead out-of-state adventures and beginner’s trips for the group. \nGoal:\nTo produce leaders for SDB that are willing to host trips/events in their own style/interest. \nObjectives:\nDuring this course we will meet the following milestones in theory and/or execution…\n🌼 Practicing traits of leadership\n🌼 Practicing damage control\n🌼 Trip planning\n🌼 Obtaining permits\n🌼 Developing routes\, using GPS\, and navigating\n🌼 Using a personal locator beacon / SOS device\n🌼 Basic first-aid\n🌼 Responding to unplanned scenarios\n🌼 Using Meetup to host a trip\n🌼 Selecting trip participants based on trip difficulty\n🌼 Plan and lead a trip \nPre-requisites:\nIf you do not already possess a California Campfire Permit\, please obtain one before the start of this course.\nGet your free permit here. \n🌼 \nIf you’d like to give back to your community\, have fun\, and backpack – let’s get planning! \nThis course will meet on Zoom and in-person. \nTo join\, please answer the question prompt provided while wait-listing. \n\nBy participating in this event\, you acknowledge you are ultimately responsible for yourself and your safety while engaging in this activity and event. \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. Be responsible for yourself and your safety. Make good decisions. With any trip\, things can change\, reservations can get lost\, the unexpected can happen. A go-with-the-flow attitude is always a good thing\, and most importantly\, let’s all have fun! This is a beginner backpacking event. Make sure you are in good enough physical shape for the distance\, elevation changes\, and terrain. The hike leaders in this group aren’t professional hike leaders. By signing up for these events\, you agree not to hold the Meetup organizers responsible for whatever happens to you on these events. The hiking group does not certify the expertise of the organizers\, the event or assistant organizers (hike leaders) and… We are NOT responsible for any possible losses or injuries.

SUMMARY:Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa trail loops hike ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be an 8-figure of two loops starting at the Satwiwa Loop Trail from the parking lot. Then\, we will continue hiking the South Ridge Trail on the other side and back to the parking lot through the Ranch Overlook Trail. “Satwiwa” is Chumashan and directly translates to “the bluffs\,” which can also translate to “higher places\,” and is the Chumashan name used for a former village near the current culture center. \nWe will enjoy the gentle slopes\, yielding trails and the awesome views of Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, which descend from Satwiwa to the Pacific Ocean along a historic Chumash trade route. \nThe forecast for Thursday is 67” at 8 am and 75* at 11 am; however\, there is little shade during this hike. \nThis hike is about 5 miles long with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 800-1000 feet. \nDirections: \nExit 101 at Lynn Road in Thousand Oaks. Go west for 5.5 miles\, and turn left\, under the Rancho Sierra Vista arch\, into the National Park. SUMMARY:Hawk Canyon lollipop - Potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nEasier option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. Take a left up the hill back to Conejo Center Dr. For those that came on the easier option\, it’s a return the way you came. \n** If you plan on leaving before the group\, please familiarize yourself with the planned route\, which can be accessed by clicking on the below link: \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4.2 miles / 2.7 miles\nGain: 700′ / 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit Beginner\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and single track.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll and ramp.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nInsect repellent (optional). \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. SUMMARY:BACKPACKING 101 (CUYAMACA): Sweetwater to Granite Springs
DESCRIPTION:This is a Beginner’s Backpacking trip.\nRSVP Opens: Saturday\, June 8\, 2024 8:00 AM\nSpace is very limited. \nAbout Me:\nI am not a professional guide or backpacking instructor.\nIn 2017 I asked a Facebook backpacking group in Virginia about learning how to backpack. Shortly after\, I met up with a stranger who showed me the ropes. I’ve been learning from those more experienced than I am\, and that’s still the way it is today. It’s finally time to return the favor!\nI joined San Diego Backpackers in 2020. I’ll be hosting a series of Backpacking 101 trips that progress in mileage. Other than that\, I specialize in leading out-of-state adventures and river trips. 🌼 \nPlease read the following in its entirety. \nSweetwater to Granite Springs in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park\nDifficulty: Moderate (Used often for beginning backpacking)\nTrail Description: Well maintained with a steady incline to camp\nLength: Approximately 8 miles total and 1\,100′ gain/loss\nCamp Description: Primitive sites with a pit toilet.\nWater: Seasonal spring with a pump\, recommended to carry all water.\nSunset: ~8:00PM\nHighs/Lows: 80s/50s \nPark requires fees. I will go ahead of time for recon\, park fee information (I believe it’s $5 per person)\, and information regarding the permits to use Granite Springs (first come\, first served). More information to come.\nPark Brochure\nAll Trails \n🌼 We’ll meet in the day picnic parking inside the Green Valley Campground at 10:00AM to check in and pay fees. (Time may change based on availability. Please be flexible.) After we square away park fees\, we’ll move our vehicles to the parking lot at the Harvey Moore Trailhead. \n🌼 There are no campfires allowed. To use a stove to prepare meals or drinks\, please obtain the required California Campfire Permit. Campfire permits are necessary to use a barbecue\, lantern\, or stove outside a developed recreation area.\nGet your free permit here. \nDuring our trip we will cover the following skills and more:\n(Some skills will be theory.)\n🌼 Leave No Trace principles\n🌼 Campsite selection\n🌼 Setting camp\n🌼 Filtering water\n🌼 Using the restroom\n🌼 Gear (preferences\, how to use\, etc.)\n🌼 Navigation\n🌼 Useful apps\n🌼 Personal locator beacons \nWhat should you bring?\nThe 10 Essentials\nGeneral Backpacking Check List\n🌼 Please be sure you are properly equipped for this trip and that all of your gear is in working order.\n🌼 If you are needing to borrow pieces of gear\, please let me know. Members of SDB have kindly offered to loan out some bits. There are also backpacking items available for rent at REI.\n🌼 Remember\, there may be no water available in camp. Please bring all of your water. This amount is totally dependent on you\, your physical fitness\, heat tolerance\, thirst levels\, perspiration levels\, desire for drinks in camp such as tea or breakfast coffee\, food prep needs\, etc. Please bring more than enough.\n🌼 Please bring adequate snacks and dinner. We’ll be breaking camp at 8:00AM\, please bring breakfast and snacks for the hike out.\n🌼 Option to host a Zoom Meeting prior to our trip to go over or review gear to be sure everyone is set. \nLastly\, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. Let’s go backpacking! SUMMARY:Meysan Lake via Whitney Portal [ADVANCED]
DESCRIPTION:***RSVPs will open APRIL 1\, 2024. Add yourself to the waitlist and I will manually add at that time.*** \nMeysan Lake Trail starting from Whitney Portal\nhttps://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/inyo/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=20804&actid=50 \nWARNING:\nThis is a CHALLENGING and STRENUOUS trail that is rocky and extremely steep. Ultralight backpacking strongly recommended. Please be trained\, in shape\, and acclimated to this high elevation before attending. Mosquitoes will likely be bad\, and it will be pretty exposed. In fact\, there is no tree cover at all at the campsite up at Meysan Lake. \nTrail Stats: \n\nMileage: 10-11 miles round trip\nStarting elevation: 8\,000 feet\nEnding elevation: 11\,600 feet\nElevation gain: 3\,600+ (there is a little bit of loss and gain at the end)\nWater source: Meysan Lake and potential for various streams crossing trail.\nBear Canisters: not required\, but recommended (https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd937100.pdf)\n\nItinerary: \n\nFriday\, June 28: camp at Whitney Portal campground or if you can’t get a site\, stay in Lone Pine or disperse camp in Alabama Hills.\nSaturday\, June 29: meet at Whitney Portal Store at 8am\, try to hit trail by 9am. Hike 5 to 5.5 miles over about 4\,000 feet of elevation gain to Meysan Lake. Set up camp and enjoy the views of Mt. Mallory and Mt. Irvine While you rest or explore around the lake.\nSunday\, June 30: pack up and hike down to the portal. Grab food or souvenirs at the Store if open. If not\, go get food down in Lone Pine.\n\nBe sure to bring:\n– Sun protection (clothing and sunscreen. If you have one of those reflective umbrellas i might recommend that too).\n– Microspikes: there may still be snow or ice on the trail (we can check on this when we get closer to the trip whether or not we will need these).\n– Extra stakes and rope for your tent. It will be mostly rocks at the campsite so it may be difficult to secure it. NO HAMMOCKS.\n– InReach or some other way finding device. Apparently the top of the trail gets confusing and it may be easy to get off track. Download trail ahead of time before the trip to track however you like to track.\n– A wag bag (rocky granite terrain may not allow for typical Leave No Trace waste burial). \nLinks to learn more about the trail:\nInyo National Forest Fact Sheet: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd530479.pdf\nAllTrails:\n[https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/meysan-trail?sh=fzrxlq ](Meysan Trail on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/meysan-trail?sh=fzrxlq) \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk. SUMMARY:Sagebrush Cantina: Hindsite
DESCRIPTION:Many from this group\, plus other friends\, will attend this event at Sagebrush Cantina. The band playing (Hindsite) puts on a fantastic show\, playing dance\, pop\, r&b/funk\, and hip hop music from the 70’s up to the latest hits. \nWe love this venue and this band. Hindsite will have you dancing all night! \nWe’ll be seated either in the outdoor area or indoors\, depending on the weather. Seating is tough here\, so even if we don’t all sit together\, we’ll be seeing one another on the dance floor! \nThe band starts at 8p\, but get there an hour earlier to start hanging out with the Hiking Plus friends. Sagebrush policy is that each person seated must spend at least $25. \nSagebrush Cantina\n23527 Calabasas Rd\, Calabasas\, CA 91302\n(818) 222-6062 \nEvents Calendar (Sagebrush Cantina)\nEvents Calendar (Hindsite) \nHiking Plus Page Links

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Hidden Lollipop - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate\, 5 mi\, 1200′ gain\nEasier Option\, 4mi 900′ gain. \nThe address given\, is not the address of the hike. It is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. \nThis variation is called Hidden Lollipop. Hidden because it includes a hike down the Hidden Canyon trail\, Lollipop because of the shape of the route. \nFrom the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot\, we head up Long Canyon Trail to a bench. We’ll regroup\, then head down about 1000′ to the 5-points junction. We’ll make the second right and head up a 500′ incline. \nWe’ll regroup here\, \nEasier Option.\nThose that want the easier option will continue on this trail for just under another mile\, and wait about 25 min. when they hit a connecting junction. That’s where our social event will be. \nRegular Route.\nFor those taking the longer route\, it’s just under 2 miles to the social event location. We turn left and go down the Hidden Canyon Trail\, which becomes the Meadow Vista Trail. Along this trail\, there will be a split. The route is to take the left split\, although both take you to the same place. The right split is slightly shorter. \nWe reach a junction at the Albertson Motorway\, turn right\, and follow it as it becomes the Albertson Fire Road. When it ends at a fire road\, we’ll stop and have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nWe’ll then make a right\, heading up the Lang Ranch Ridge Trail until returning to the 5-points junction\, left for 500 steps to the bench\, and then right to head back to the parking lot. For those that took the easier option\, this is returning the way you came. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are plants you will probably see on the hike: \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike\nDistance: 5 mi.\, easier option 4 mi.\nGain: 1200′\, easier option 900′\nDistribution: Two extended inclines and a couple shorter but steeper inclines. \nDifficulty: Intermediate. Easier option – Easy-Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, clockwise. Easier option\, out-and-back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations:\nThere are a couple extended inclines of 1000 steps or more as the route progresses.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nThis description includes a picture of the route. \nStops\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. \nGroup separation\nThose moving significantly ahead or not waiting at designated stopping points are on their own regarding route and navigation. It is advisable not to follow\, as a different route might be taken. \nSafety\nSince it’s common to not have a cell phone signal\, the host and at least 1 other person will be carrying a GMRS two-way radio. You can purchase one for about $25 and bring it if you want added safety. Message the host for the channel and privacy code. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101:\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. SUMMARY:Canyon Overlook Trail to Lizard Rock - Intermediate Gentler
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked this route on Friday as the weather is getting hot and I haven’t hiked the Canyon Overlook Trail for quite a while. It was pretty exposed\, but the ocean breeze made it comfortable.\nThe hike starts at the parking area on Hill Canyon Road and climbs Canyon Overlook Trail. The trail is a utility road and becomes a ridgeline trail with spectacular views into Hill Canyon and to Elliott Peak to the west\, and Mt Clef Butte to the east\, ending at Lizard Rock with its own amazing views.\nFollow it all the way passing Lizard Rock Trail\, then turn right and up. At the next fork\, 350 yards on\, keep right and continue going uphill. 200 feet further\, turn right to get to the Lizard Rock Trail and continue zigzagging down to Hill Canyon Water Treatment Center. Then\, we will cross over the new canyon bridge to Hill Canyon Trail and return back to our cars. \nThis hike is about 5 miles with a 900-1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. After 5 miles\, turn right onto Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace**\,** or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
