SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.2 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy intermediate. \nThe first part is a steady incline\, followed by a rolling trail to our destination. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. There are no super steep sections. \nThis hike takes us to a secret spot below a large rock formation. Naturally into the side of the rock is a half-globe carved out of it\, giving us a quasi-cave area to sit and have our social event. \nThis is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. We’ll stop at the turn around point for a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, where we will share snacks and beverages. \nThe Route \nHike\nDistance: 3.2 miles\nGain: 900′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations:\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, about a block from the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Maybe by the restrooms.\nParking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a Snack and Beverage Share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nManzanita\nRounded leaves. Redish trunk and stems. Hard wood. Lots of curves. People used to spray this tree with lacquer and mount on their walls like a “tree of life” for decoration. \nSticky Monkeyflower\nOf the Snapdragon family. The flowers are supposed to resemble a laughing monkey’s face. SUMMARY:Hike to the Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall - Gabrieleno Trail
DESCRIPTION:This hike is so cool! It’s a good distance with little elevation gain and it is beautiful. \nThis hike will take us to the Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall. The hike is an out and back at around 8 miles total with 750 ft. of elevation gain\, so not steep! This area of the Angeles National Forest is beautiful so I’m really looking forward to this hike. \nThere are a lot of shallow water crossings\, so please be prepared to get your feet wet. The BBT will take us through Newton\, Zuma\, Trancas and Encinal Canyons then the Etz Meloy Roadway on the way to Mishe Mokwa. Bring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. Rain\, excessive heat\, or Red Flag alert cancels. \nThis is a Sierra Club hike\, so participants must sign in\, carry their medical form\, and hike between the leader and sweep. We ask you to print it out and carry it with you\, but the form will be available at the trailhead as well. \nTRAILHEAD LOCATION: We will meet at 7:30 AM at the Mishe Mokwa Trailhead. The “Rainforest” section is what so many people comment on. So let’s check it out. Reviews state that this trail has a lot of variety\, from hill climbs to open views to shade to “the rainforest” so here’s our chance to see what all the buzz is about. DESCRIPTION:I’ll be working in the Malibu Creek State Park Visitor Center this Saturday. We are open from Noon to 4pm. Stop by and say hello — and for a private tour. \nAbout the VC\nThe MCSP Visitor Center (VC) is a historic building and is over 100 years old. Malibu Creek Docents operate the VC. Here you will see a museum representative of the Park’s natural and human history: animals and tracks\, birds\, rocks and fossils\, pictures of flowers\, a model Chumash village display and artifacts\, and movie history. There is a Children’s Nature Room with activities for children of all ages. Maps\, books\, drinks\, apparel and souvenirs are for sale. \nDirections\nA one mile walk from the lower parking lot will take you to the VC. It is not possible to drive directly to the VC. SUMMARY:🚒Firehouse Hill - Cheeseboro Canyon - Morrison Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our hike begins at Las Virgenes Highlands Park. A steep trail up Firehouse Hill will take us to peaks that offer panoramic views towards the Santa Monica Mountains\, Agoura Hills\, Calabasas\, Simi Hills and beyond. We’ll take a break atop Mount Basura. \nAftere our break\, we’ll descend into Cheeseboro Canyon via the Canyon View Trail and make a small loop around the southern end of the canyon\, around the Modelo and Fran Pawley Meadow trails. We return to the bottom of Firehouse Hill via the Morrison Ranch Trail\, traversing oak savannas and a nice walnut woodland. \nHike is about 7 miles with 1\,500 feet total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain — see the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note\nLV Highlands Park was previously owned by realtor Fred Sands\, and before that Bob Hope. It was acquired by MRCA for $6.25 million in 2010. Us locals have always called it Firehouse Hill \nDirections\nThe park is located on Las Virgenes Road\, just south of Mureau Road and north of Highway 101 in Calabasas. From the 101 go north on Las Virgenes Rd. You will need to drive past the trailhead — on the left — and make a U-turn at Thousand Oaks Blvd. Park in the lot next to fire station.

SUMMARY:Mash Site - Malibu Creek State Park Potluck Hike
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner – 6 miles\, 600′ gain (route link)\nEasy Option – 2 miles\, 300′ gain (route link) \nThis is a social hike and an out-and-back event. \nThere is a potluck at the M.A.S.H. site before we turn around for the return. If your item requires paper plates\, utensils\, etc. please bring them. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nPot Luck guidelines link \nWe will meet at the Grasslands trail head off of Mulholland Hwy and take the Grasslands Trail with a gentle climb and connect to the High Road (~3/4 miles). We’ll take a right and follow the High Road another 3/4 miles then take a right at Crag Road up a short 1/3 mile climb (170′ gain). At the top of the hill\, we’ll take a left turn down the short bypass trail to Century Lake. \nFrom Century Lake\, the trail is level all the way to the M.A.S.H. site. From the lake we’ll continue on Crag Road and at a 1/2 mile we’ll cross over Malibu Creek. The bridge over the creek is washed out\, so we’ll have cross over some fallen branches and rocks just beyond the bridge (I’m not sure of the water level or conditions of the creek\, so there is a chance you may get wet). SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) - Reagan Ranch to MASH
DESCRIPTION:This hike is a shorter/gentler Tuesday hike (5 1/2 mile\, 500′ gain) due to the hot weather forecast. We will enter MCSP on the Yearling Trail which crosses the grasslands of the former Reagan Ranch and meets up with the scenic Lookout Trail. The Lookout Trail climbs through a chaparral “forest” to panoramic views of Century Lake and MCSP’s central valley. The Lookout Trail drops down to Crags Road at the site of the Planet of the Apes village. We’ll take a brief detour to Century Dam and the very scenic and shady woodland at the east end of Century Lake. \nFrom Century Lake we will follow Crags Road west and cross Malibu Creek on our way to the MASH site. The mile or so from the bridge crossing to MASH is some of the nicest riparian habitat in the park. The trail crews have done a great job of restoring the trail which was badly damaged in last season’s storms. \nWe will complete our western tour of MCSP by returning to the Yearling Trail via the Cage Trail. \nKathy and I scouted this hike on Saturday and completed it in exactly 2 hours (without stopping). We’ll plan to be back at the cars by 11:00. SUMMARY:Through Conejo Canyon bridge to Wildwood Central Park - Intermediate Gentler
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for the overflow on Tuesday. We will be a little shorter and possibly a little slower. If you change hikes\, don’t forget to take yourself off the waitlist or the regular list on the Malibu Creek hike. \nLet’s go to Wildwood Park through Hill Canyon. The parking lot at the trailhead is closed\, but there is another paved lot just before the trailhead on your right. After crossing the bridge from the parking lot\, we will start the hike following Hill Canyon trail to the newly opened “Conejo Canyon Bridge” which connects trails on either side of the creek\, Conejo Canyons and Wildwood Park. Jaesoon recently did this hike\, and it was a nice change. Our elevation gain will be the trail up to Lizard Rock. From there we will turn around and come back. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nWe will pass through various trails with bridges and tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about a 800’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.5 miles to the parking lot on your right. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Beginner \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and have a social event\, right on the trail. We’ll share snacks and beverages. For the return\, we go back the way we came. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes:\nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)\nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. DESCRIPTION:NOTE:\nThere is quite a bit of shade on this hike. This will be a gentler hike for Thursday. We will go slower and with less elevation gain and less miles. Some hikers may want to add a mile by going to the Greenmeadow parking lot at the end of the hike and taking the trail back to Moorpark\, but you can also return to the Moorpark parking lot before that turn off. Another hike will be posted\, please only sign up for one hike. \nWe will start in the parking lot at the end of Moorpark and walk down the street to the Las Padres trail. From there we will loop around and come back to the Moorpark trailhead via the Los Robles trail. SUMMARY:Wildwood to Santa Rosa Trail to Box Canyon Loop-Gentler Friendly/Not Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Let’s hike a loop through Wildwood we haven’t done in a long time. \nWildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for Davy Crocket\, The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nThis hike takes us from the main parking lot up the Santa Rosa Trail to Mount Clef Ridge\, providing sweeping views of the park\, the Santa Rosa Valley\, & maybe the Channel Islands if it’s clear. \nDescending into the valley\, we’ll pass the famed train yard\, as well as other quirky estates. \nWe will take the Box Canyon Trail and the Mesa Trail back before heading back to the parking lot. \nOur route will be approximately 6 miles and 1000 +’ of elevation gain. Much of the hike is exposed and the Box Canyon climb toward the end is work – so dress appropriately\, and make sure you have plenty of water or beverage of choice. Bring your poles if you like them. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nWatch for cross traffic coming from the right when you turn into the parking lot- they don’t have to stop. SUMMARY:Chivo Tar Pits lollipop - Easy Intermediate with beginner option
DESCRIPTION:4.75 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate\nOption for 3 miles\, 300′ gain\, easy. 30 minute wait while group completes the loop back to this spot. \nThis is a link to the route: LINK \nWe start with a 1/4 mile walk from where we park along Cottonwood Dr\, to the trail head. There we make a left and take a relatively flat section and hike for about 3/4 mile. We’ll come to the same tar pits as the Tapo Canyon tar pit hike\, and then continue for another 300 feet to a fire road. \nWe’ll turn left and after about 300′\, we arrive at a trail junction\, which is our social event area. \nEasier Option: Those taking the easier option will wait there for 30-45 minutes for the rest to arrive back. \nRegular Option: Those taking the regular route will make a gradual climb for 1 mile and about 450′ of incline. At the top\, continue straight and then back down for 3/4 mile\, arriving back at the social event area for 30-60 minutes. \nPlease bring food and drink to share. \nNext we’ll turn back and head the way we came down a mostly flat section for about a mile until we arrive back at the trail head. SUMMARY:Hike to Black Star Canyon Falls - Santa Ana Mountains
DESCRIPTION:I love this hike and everyone seems to have a good time\, so let’s do it again! There should be a good amount of water\, so you will get wet. \nThe hike will be 8-8.5 miles with 940 ft. of elevation gain. The hike starts on an asphalt road\, but once we turn to the creek path\, which is about 2 miles in\, there will be some water crossings\, and rock/boulder climbing. This hike is quite the adventure\, so please be prepared to get wet\, try to avoid poison oak (it is everywhere\, so wear long pants/long sleeves)\, and use upper and lower body strength. At the end\, there is a waterfall which is awesome! All of the fun is in getting there though. \nThere is lots of poison oak! DESCRIPTION:I’m so excited for another Wilderness Open Access Day at Limestone Canyon. We will be doing the out and back trail to the Sinks. The hike will be about 8 miles with roughly 630 ft. of elevation gain. \n**You must sign up here:\nhttps://letsgooutside.org/activities/2024/10/05/wilderness-access-day-limestone-canyon-58/ \nAt the time of posting\, there are 198 spots left of 400. \nFrom the site: \nAll participants are required to have\, a printed copy or on their phone\, the confirmation email to show through the window of their vehicle to drive through the entry gate. \nYou will need the confirmation email for you and your guests to enter the trail system. \nStart your weekend off by exploring numerous opportunities found throughout magnificent Limestone Canyon. Designated trails will be open for self-guided trail use in OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space. Trail routes vary in distance and level of difficulty with choices ranging from easy one-hour walks to strenuous 15-mile cardio treks. Whether traveling by feet or wheels\, Wilderness Access Day in Limestone Canyon is a treasure waiting to be discovered by hikers and mountain bikers alike.\nParticipants will want to plan their day successfully by using Trail Tips to prepare. \nPlease note that you are asked to adhere to the following measures during the activity in order to participate: \n\nArrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail\, including water\, proper attire and footwear\, first aid\, medications\, etc.\nRestrooms will be available\, but facilities will not be sanitized for each individual.\nVisiting the highly popular “The Sinks” is a 9-mile round trip hike over moderate terrain and can take the majority of the designated event time.\nOC Park Rangers require all trails to be cleared for closure by 2:00pm.\nNo new trail users will be permitted onto the trails at least one hour prior to closing.\nDogs are prohibited on the Irvine Ranch Open Space. By nature\, dogs are predators; their presence and their lingering scent disturb the indigenous wildlife and disrupt vital routines long after a dog has left the area.\nMinors\, ages 18 and under\, should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.\nAdult mountain bikers and equestrians are requested to wear helmets. Minors are required to wear helmets per state law.\nMotorized recreation vehicles of any class or type are not permitted for use in the Irvine Ranch Open Space.\nInclement weather or fire danger will cause the program to be cancelled.

SUMMARY:NEVADA: Kayak Camping Black Canyon (12 paddle miles)
DESCRIPTION:This is not a hiking or backpacking trip.\nThis is an overnight via kayak in the Black Canyon on the Colorado River on the NV/AZ border. \nYou must be able to manage yourself and your transportation. This trip has minimal guidance. It may be possible to plan ridesharing by communicating with other attendees.\nThe trip leader will not be traveling back to California after this event and is unable to facilitate rideshares.\nAs this trip is out of state\, communication is critical. If you are attending but have not connected with the group prior to shuttling to Hoover Dam\, you will be left behind. There is sporadic phone service or no service. Therefore\, if something comes up\, you must communicate with the group as early as possible.\n***\nTrip Breakdown 🌞\nItinerary:\nDay 0 (October 4th\, Friday): Option to camp at Boulder Beach\, Lake Mead Rec Area\, Requires an America the Beautiful pass.\nDay 1 (October 5th\, Saturday): Shuttle with outfitter to Hoover Dam with ourselves\, kayaks\, and gear. THANK YOU GARIN! \nThe hike starts at Dillon Divide\, a trailhead/ turnout\, on Little Tujunga Canyon. We follow a dirt road for a short distance until a single track trail turns off left into Pacoima Canyon. It is a nice hike down hill into the canyon. Once in the canyon\, we follow trails and the creek bed: the creek bed is dry at this time of year. Bring poles to help with stepping stones. The trail will take us to Dutch Louie Tunnel which has water flowing out of it. You do not need to go into the tunnel but if you do\, your feet will get wet\, so plan accordingly (water shoes?). \n(History: A prospector carved the tunnel through the rock to divert the creek\, so he could mine for gold in a dry creek bed. The tunnel is a 100-150 feet long and it still has the creek running through it. Sunscreen\, hat\, lunch/ snacks\, hiking poles (helpful on the uphill portion)\, and a camera. Wear layered clothing in case it gets hot or cold (we will post forecast). Wear boots with lots of tread.\nGoing in the short wet Tunnel – Bring a small flashlight/headlight. !! Exit at Sand Canyon\, and turn right on to Sand Canyon (South/East). \n(Note: If you are coming from anywhere in SFV South or East of of 5/ 14 HWY split\, Google may route you along the 210 and up Little Tujunga Canyon Road\, as the shortest route. If you are familiar with this route\, take it). \nFrom North (A/V):\nTake SR-14 South. Exit at Sand Canyon – Exit 9. On the off ramp\, keep in left lane and go up left on to Soledad Canyon. Almost immediately\, at the light\, turn left over the highway and keep going straight on to Sand Canyon – watch out for the 4 way STOP after the In-n-Out burger! \nBoth directions:\nNext (it’s another 10.6 miles total from 14) … Continue on Sand Canyon\, passing all the mansions\, past Placerita Canyon Rd. on your right\, etc.\, keep going straight\, as you enter the Angeles National Forest and continue up!up!up! along Sand Canyon Road\, until you see a winged memorial at a bad corner (on the right side). Shortly after this\, you will go around a sharp left hand bend and crest the hill (on this saddler you are now 6.1 miles from the highway and have another 4.2 miles to go); Bear Divide Vista picnic/parking area is immediately on the right.\nContinue 4.1 miles down the other side and eventually up around some bad curves\, until you see Dillon Divide\, a white gate on the left ( 34.34461\, -118.34959). \nPARKING: BE AWARE OF FAST CARS\, AT TRAIL HEAD\, PLEASE PARK STRAIGHT IN\, close as possible together and do not block the white gate.\nLIMITED PARKING but there are several turnouts below and above the gate – SEE DIAGRAM IN PHOTO ALBUM. \nAdventure Pass: No. There are no bathrooms at trail head but plenty of bushes. \nDogs: OK\, if kept on a leash and well behaved around other dogs and people with poles. \nThis is another hike that may not be around for much longer. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. \nFrom here\, we will go down Mustard Road and head back up to Four Corners via Billy Goat Trail. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 600′ gain\, easy intermediate.\nEasy option: 2.5 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner.\nThe route is similar to the Beach Party hikes. \nFrom the parking lot\, we return to the main entrance road and walk about a quarter mile to the trailhead. \nFrom the trailhead\, we will hike 0.1 miles up the Sycamore Canyon Fire Road\, where will turn left onto the Scenic Trail. Optionally\, we may instead continue an additional 2000′ and turn left on the Overlook trail until it ends and then turn left onto the Scenic trail. \nAt the top of the Scenic Trail\, we will make a sharp left (not an easy left) onto the Great Dune Vista Trail. This trail follows a ridge overlooking both the ocean and the canyon. We will continue along the ridge to the highest point\, and then retrace our steps back to the top of the Scenic Trail. We then make the easy left that we previously avoided and proceed for 0.1 miles until the trail dead ends at the edge of the cliffs (Scenic Vista). \nWe will then have our social event at Scenic Vista\, where we will share snacks and drinks. Scenic Vista is an incredible overlook of the ocean and the sand dune\, as well as an unrivaled sunset viewing spot. \nEasy Option: Skip the ridge and wait for the rest of us at Scenic Vista. \nFinally\, we will return along the ridge the way we came. We’ll turn right at the first junction along the Scenic trail back until it ends at Sycamore Canyon fire road\, then right back to the trailhead. This is the Angeles Chapter Wilderness Travel Course (WTC). Some of you have taken the course and are now leaders and/or knowledgeable hikers. For those of you who have not\, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competently hiking off-trail\, snow travel\, rock scrambling techniques\, first aid\, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips most of which take place in the High Sierra\, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months.\nWTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ You Choose ~ 6 or 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Due to the ongoing heat and humidity this is a choose your own hike. You have the option of 6 or 8 miles. It’s a straight forward out and back hike so you decide when to turn back. \nEncinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is a 6-8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1000’- 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:4.3 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasier Option: 3.2 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nThe address is not the address of the hike\, but a nearby address that should get you to pass by the trailhead. \nThe “cc” in the title means counter clockwise. We’ll be stopping at various points to regroup. \nWe will start by heading the back way on a mostly flat section from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot to an asphalt road\, then left to the Poopond and trail split. At this point\, if you want a shorter hike\, turn left for 0.6 miles and 220 feet of gain\, arriving at the Rockuzzi on the left. \nOtherwise\, we’ll turn right and make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, make a left heading sharply up for about 100′\, then left on the fireroad for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading up 50 yards and then down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know where it is\, for a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the lot. \nInteresting Notes \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. They were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike\nDistance: 4.3 miles\nGain: 800\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. It is a fire road incline of about 1 mile.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the lot at the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 2/3 point along the hike. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nDirections:\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley\, at the traihead in the paved parking lot on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130\nAddress of a nearby house: 572 Bannister Way\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. \nArrive early\, because sometimes the parking lot gets full. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:While the heat is once again with us\, we will take this at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views west to Port Hueneme\, Oxnard and the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not hazy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes.
