SUMMARY:Lynmere Loop from Wildwood Park (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY. \nKindly review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nProof of vaccination required.\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nLet’s do Lynmere from Wildwood for a change. We will shorten it a bit. Hoping to have some relief from the sun and heat on this hike. Bring plenty of water. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take Teepee Trail to Lynmere Trail. After completing the loop we will take Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, and take our break in the picnic area. We will pick up Lizard Rock Trail and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We will either take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, or catch Mesa Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for relief from the heat for approximately 7+ miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions.\nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \nHope you can join me. \nMy cell is: 818-523-8719.

SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Tar Pits - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.4 miles\, 1050′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nThis hike is one of the most beautiful hikes in Simi Valley. There are 3 extended inclines\, about 1000 steps each\, on fire road. They are not especially steep\, but they do continue for some time\, which is why it is rated “Easy Intermediate.” There are also several small hills of 100 steps or less. \nThe extended inclines will get the blood pumping during this lollipop hike. We’ll be moving through the famous Tapo Canyon and visiting natural tar pits that bubble up from the ground. \nThe first pit is really a puddle that looks like someone spilled a couple 55-gallon drums of tar that was later contained using a spill rope. The next two are a little larger\, again\, contained by spill ropes to keep the sticky black tar from getting on the trail. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll start on a leisurely stroll for about 0.6 miles\, followed by a steady climb for the next mile\, completing the first extended incline. \nWe’ll turn left at the junction\, climb a small hill of a couple hundred steps\, and then head down for 1.5 miles. \nWe’ll make a right turn down a smaller trail and go for about 100 yards until we reach the tar pits. After looking around for a bit\, we’ll head back\, and after 0.25 miles\, we’ll come to another junction where we will stop and share snacks and beverages. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn left and there will be a steady climb for about 3/4 of a mile to another junction. We’ll turn left again and return down for about 1.4 miles to complete the lollipop. \nEasy option (no host): 3 miles\, 300′ gain.\nPark at 5079 Westwood St\, Simi Valley\, CA 93063. Follow Cottonwood Dr/Yosemite Ave south (down) 1000′ to the trailhead. Enter and turn immediately left. After 350′\, there is a split. It doesn’t matter which you take. The right (upper) is single-track\, the left (lower) is fire road. After ½ mile\, the two trails merge into the fire road. After 600′\, you arrive at the tar pits. Keep going another 600′\, left at the dead end\, and 1/3rd mile to the social event location. Return the way you came. \nDirections:\nTapo Canyon\n3802 Tapo Canyon Road\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \nFrom the 118:\nExit 27 Tapo Canyon Rd.\nTapo Canyon Rd. north for 1.7 miles.\nTrail head on the right\, before Lost Canyon Rd.\nParking is free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \nFrom CA-23:\nCA-23 north to CA-118 east.\nCA-118 east for 8.7 miles.\nExit 27 Tapo Canyon Rd.\nTapo Canyon Rd. north (left) for 1.7 miles.\nTrail head on the right.\nParking is free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \nHike\nDistance: 5.4 miles\, Easy Option: 3 miles\nGain: 1050′\, Easy Option 300′\nDistribution: Reasonably well distributed.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\nShape: Lollipop\, clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point\, which we will pass\, and then return to after seeing the tar pits. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:\nHikers not waiting at designated stopping points\, are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:While the heat is once again with us\, we will take this at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up and turn around just before going up to the monument. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views west to Port Hueneme\, Oxnard and the Pacific Ocean. SUMMARY:Hawk Canyon lollipop - Pot Luck hike
DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nEasier option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. Take a left up the hill back to Conejo Center Dr. For those that came on the easier option\, it’s a return the way you came. \n** If you plan on leaving before the group\, please familiarize yourself with the planned route\, which can be accessed by clicking on the below link: \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4.2 miles / 2.7 miles\nGain: 700′ / 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit Beginner\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and single track.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll and ramp.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring \n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nInsect repellent (optional). \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. \nGroup separation\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. SUMMARY:Mount Pinos via McGill Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mt-pinos-via-mcgill-trail \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nOkays it’s time for some forest therapy. This is a really popular backpacking trail as your surrounded by lush pine trees and gorgeous mountain peaks. Once we reach Pinos peak will take a snack break and pics as this peak does have signs. This is one of the easier peaks to reach with the summit being at 8\,847 ft (and the highest point in Ventura County) and a great stopping point for a break before heading back. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 6:15 am) I have attached the AllTrails link for stats\, directions and photos. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mt-pinos-via-mcgill-trail \nTrail out and back\nMiles 15.4\nRated hard\nElevation Gain 2939 ft\nParking Dirt lot\nDogs allowed but must be trained for a longer harder hike \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:\n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are of your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limit. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. We offer all levels of hikes from moderate to hard to advanced only. We encourage everyone to not give up work on your core by joining our easier moderate Events and then joining our harder hikes once you are ready. 😊

SUMMARY:🌠🍷Fireballs over Malibu - Perseid Party🎉🌠
DESCRIPTION:No white lights\, bring red or green — red being the best. Amazon has some inexpensive ones that have worked well for me and other members: **https://amzn.to/3OAAu3S**. If you don’t have one you can piggy back off the others’. If you need a white light\, then you should not be attending. \nYou don’t need to get out of the city to view the Perseid Meteor Shower. Anywhere is fine as long as there are no lights in your line of sight. For us city-folk\, the Santa Monica Mountains provides some of the best viewing spots for watching the Perseid Meteor Shower. \nI have selected Saddle Peak as our viewing spot. At over 2\,800 feet\, Saddle Peak is the highest peak in the eastern/central Santa Monica Mountains \nWe’ll get there by way of Backbone Trail near where Stunt Road\, Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Rd meet. \n🍻🧺Bring food/snacks and booze to share. Bring your own cups\, plates\, etc \nThis year’s Perseid meteor shower began July 17 and ends August 24 with a peak during the predawn hours of Sunday\, August 13. We will be watching the show Thursday night and avoid the Friday and Saturday night crowds with their headlights and flashlights. \n📈There will be an EASY 1 mile hike — with a gentle 450 ft ascent — to our viewing location\, then 1 mile back they way we came. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nWe will arrive early to catch the sunset over Malibu and the Pacific. There will be panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean to the West\, and other ridges and peaks of the Santa Monica Mountains to the East and West. \n🚨No white lights\, bring red or green — red being the best. These have worked well for me and other members: **https://amzn.to/3OAAu3S**. If you don’t have one you can piggy back off the others’. If you need a white light\, then you should not be attending. \nDIRECTIONS: \nHead toward the top of Stunt Road where it comes together with Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Road. Park in a turnout about 0.1 mile downhill from the top of Stunt. \nUse this link for precise navigation: https://goo.gl/maps/DrDP7CYwCghi8UHx6 \nSee https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/33783957/514754371/ for aerial vew

SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 mi\, 500′ gain\, beginner\nEasier option: 1.5 mi\, 125′ gain\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop\, (the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. \nWe’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. After about 0.2 miles\, there will be a split. We can go either way because they rejoin after about 100 yards\, but for this route\, we’ll go left. \nAfter another half mile\, the route makes a turn to the right. Those that want the super-easy route should continue straight for 100 yards to a log\, where they can wait about 45 min for the rest of us to return for the social event. \nThe rest of the group will follow the trail to the right and continue for about 1.2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, travel about 20 yards west\, and head back in on a different trail. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll reconnect with the original trail for the return. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 yards\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event snack and beverage share. \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the left and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. Click HERE for route. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac\nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista Beginner Hike
DESCRIPTION:Instead of our usual starting point at the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead for SAMO\, this shorter\, beginner hike will start at the newer COSCA trailhead lot\, 1.5 miles west of the intersection of Lynn and Reino in Newbury Park. See photo for what to look for off of Lynn Road. Note: This is NOT the National Park Service lot. \nBeginner hikes are intended for those new to hiking\, or new to the area. Preference will be given to attendees who have not hiked with us regularly. \nWe’ll do a loop around the flats and heights south of Lynn Road between Dos Vientos and the historical Guadalasca / Broome Ranch. We’ll see the remaining wildflowers\, probably some equestrians\, and a glimpse into the privately-owned canyons west of Sycamore Canyon and north of Hidden Pond. \nTotal distance is 4 miles\, with an elevation gain and loss of 500′\, shorter and less elevation than WTB’s usual “Gentler” Thursday hikes. We will hike at a little more than 2 miles per hour\, and will stop at intersections where we might lose stragglers. Weather is forecast to be in the low 80’s on Thursday\, so please be prepared for walking\, some climbs and descents\, and our hiking speed. If you’re unsure about whether you can make 4 miles on our route\, please feel free to contact me to discuss. \nIn some climbs / descents\, the trail has some loose rock\, and we will encounter sweet-smelling\, dehydrated horse poop – please wear appropriate hiking shoes or boots. Be sure to bring sun protection and plenty of water\, as there is little shade on our route. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road\, and travel southwest 6 miles\, past the National / State Park entrance\, and past the two equestrian center driveways. The left turn into the COSCA lot is 1.5 miles past the stoplight at Reino Road. If you get to the Potrero Road descent to CSUCI\, turn around! There are water fountains\, and vault toilets with soap and sinks\, at the trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos -- Ride the Two Winds\, a Gentler Friendly (but not Beginner) Hike.
DESCRIPTION:Please note this hike is not for beginners. The Dos Vientos Trail system is a network of many trails and you need to be able to keep in contact to avoid being lost! Not the best hike is you are a slow hiker. \nNote also that there is a chance of some rain Thursday morning. Unless it is significant\, I won’t cancel\, so stay tuned in the morning for any last minute info. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. Some short sections will be along the street. \nThis hike is about 6.0 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hike\, but we will try to finish in 2.5 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I will mark the trail if necessary\, but I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. Note there is no cover on most of this trail so bring plenty of water. \nPlease review the revised guidelines to participate in our hikes. We are requiring proof of vaccination to join a hike. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\n\nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet by the tennis courts to the left. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon - Serrano Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:This is a loop hike. From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we’ll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano Canyon trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon\, with a lovely seasonal stream crisscrossing the trail numerous times\, and abundant wildlife. As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. This is Serrano Valley \nWe’ll explore the Serrano Family Home Site. This was a large ranch back in the day. The area is strewn with old farm equipment\, water pumps\, home items\, and other artifacts. Trails may be a little overgrown in this area \nI first discovered the Serrano Ranch artifacts in 2013 after the Springs fire. The fire uncovered a bonanza of artifacts including home appliances\, tools\, etc. Check out the pictures here. \nWe’ll crisscross many of the old ranch roads and trails there. We’ll return to Sycamore Canyon via the Old Boney Trail and head back to the cars \nHIKE IS APPX 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. SEE THE HWD HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections \nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Turn in and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park or hang out. We’ll be meeting in day use lot. \nSycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nThere is a parking fee\, credit cards ok. There is additional pay parking at Thornhill Broom Beach – from there walk under PCH to meetup spot.

SUMMARY:Zuma Canyon: Ocean and Canyon View trail Loop ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:The name “Zuma” is derived from the Chumash language and means “abundance.” There is an absolute abundance of beautiful and spectacular wildflowers engulfing the entire area and it appears that there was no impact from the Woolsey fire other than a few remnants of burnt trees. \nWe will start to hike the Zuma Loop trail and continue on to Ocean View trail. Then\, we descend down the Canyon View trail to the parking lot.\nThis hike is five miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximate 1000’ gain/loss \nDirections:\nFrom Santa Monica\, Thousand Oaks\, and the San Fernando Valley\, drive west on Pacific Coast Highway somewhat less than a mile past Kanan\, and turn right (north) on Bonsall Drive. Continue north into the dirt lot at the end. \nFrom Oxnard and points north and west\, turn left on Bonsall to the end. If you get to Kanan\, you’ve gone too far! \nPlease review the guidelines (https://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group.
