SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet under the solar panels near the community center entrance. \nThis is a second\, easier hike for Tuesday\, and a little closer to home for some of us. \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 3 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about\n2-2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet under the solar panels to the right. \nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Top of the Santa Monicas- Sandstone Peak! (Intermediate Hike)
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be looping around the Backbone and Mishe Mokwa Trails for 6.5 miles\, moving up approximately 1500′ as we go. \nWe’ll pass Echo Cliffs\, where rock climbers ascend sheer cliffs\, a house sized boulder delicately balanced on a small rock beneath\, a giant split rock\, stunning giant sandstone formations\, and breathtaking views. \nDirections: \nDirections to the Sandstone Peak Trailhead:\nFrom Westlake Village\, exit on Westlake Blvd (CA-23 South) from the 101 Freeway\, and follow it south for several miles (approximately 7 miles) to stop sign for Mulholland West (Note: Westlake Blvd. will merge with Mulholland West before you reach the stop sign). At the stop sign\, turn right onto Mulholland (West) for about 0.4 miles. Turn right onto Little Sycamore Canyon\, which becomes Yerba Buena Road after 1.4 miles\, for 4 1/2 miles to Sandstone Peak trailhead. The Sandstone Peak lot is on the right side of the road. Look for large Sandstone Peak sign. The parking lot is above Yerba Buena Road and there is a bathroom in the parking lot. If you pass the Circle X Ranch\, you went too far. \nNote: This is a very slow driving route (narrow\, with sharp turns) and will take 20-30 minutes from the 101 to the parking lot. Give yourself plenty of time. Cell reception is marginal (at best) up there\, so we won’t be waiting on any “I’m late” calls\, because we won’t receive them. \nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nRead about The Weekday Trailblazers and our policies here:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/the-weekday-trailblazers/ \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 3 miles\, 700′ gain\nEasier Option: 2.4 mi\, 530′ gain. (1343 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065\, or 89 La Paz Ct\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 to save another 500′ distance). \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nThe Hike\nEasy end of the Intermediate Spectrum\, due to the 1 mile continuous incline that can get exhausting. A fit beginner can easily complete it. \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave. Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nFor those that want a little easier option start at this address: 1366 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. Join the group as we pass. \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks (zig-zag trail) for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. Beginners may find this climb difficult to continue at a fast pace. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute several times during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nAt the top by the cross or one of the nearby benches\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. \nDistance: 3 miles (round trip)\nElevation Gain: 700′\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\nDuration: 3 1/2 hours\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes – at nearby places of business\nDrinking Fountains: Yes – at nearby places of business\nParking: Free\nTrail: Mostly single-track\, excellent condition\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. \nWhat to Bring\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nDirections\nFor those doing the regular route:\n1424 Madera Rd\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) Grand Tour including MASH
DESCRIPTION:This week I will be working with the MCSP docents and CA State Parks to reinstall the bridge over Malibu Creek to MASH. We will likely be the first large group to take advantage of the “dry” crossing (assuming all goes well on the install). \nWe will start this hike from MCSP’s Lower/Main Trailhead parking lot. You will be entering through the staffed kiosk so have your state park pass or entrance fee handy. From the Main Trailhead\, we will make our way to Crags Road. Crags Road runs along and above Malibu Creek. The park is particularly beautiful this year due to our unusually wet winter–lots of flowers and wildlife. \nOn this tour of MCSP’s central valley\, we will take a couple of detours off of Crags Road before reaching the bridge crossing. First we’ll loop up and over the Grassland Trail to take in the sweeping views of MCSP’s Torpin Plain. Next\, for even grander views\, we’ll take the Lookout Trail to the Cage Trail which rejoins Crags Road for the bridge crossing. On the trail to MASH you’ll be amazed at the dramatic effects of the high water levels that surged through earlier in the year. \nThis out-and-back hike\, plus those side trips\, clocks in at around 6.5 miles\, with an elevation gain/loss of about 750‘. Kathy and I scouted this hike on Saturday and completed it in just under 3 hours taking a rather leisurely pace. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Las Virgenes Rd.\, south for about 3.5 miles to the MCSP entrance (first right after crossing Mulholland). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy CC Loop - Suitable for Fit Beginners
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe address given\, is not the address of the hike. It is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. \nThose that prefer the Easy Option\, should head UP from the trail head\, waiting when they get to the bench at the top. \nFor the rest of us: Starting from the trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses\, which is the back way. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a sharp left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll meet with those that took the easy option\, and stop for a snack and beverage share. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail down to the parking lot. \nInteresting Notes:\nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched\nElderberry – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \nHike\nDistance: 3 mi (easier option\, 1.4 mi)\nGain: 650′ (easier option\, 450′)\nDistribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner.\nShape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations: The beginning is a flat walk. The middle has an extended incline of about 1000 steps. The end is downhill\, somewhat steep.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free at the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike includes an extended stop for a snack and beverage share just before the last segment down. \nWe’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner.\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130 \nIn the Spring and Summer\, arrive early. Sometimes the parking lot gets full. If this happens\, we’ll need another 15 minutes to carpool from a nearby parking lot. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

There is sporadic phone service or no service\, therefore if something comes up\, you must communicate with the group as early as possible. \n\nTotal roundtrip distance: ~19 miles \nTrip Breakdown 🌞\nSalt Trail\nRoundtrip distance: 6 miles\nElevation Loss/Gain: -/+ 2\,715 feet\nDifficulty: Very strenuous\nBeamer Trail to Confluence\nRoundtrip distance: 13 miles\nElevation Loss/Gain: -/+ 187 feet\nDifficulty: Strenuous \nITINERARY:\nDay 0 (May 9th\, Thursday): Travel to Flagstaff\, touch base with group.\nDay 1 (May 10th\, Friday): Progress to trail and hike to basecamp.\nDay 2 (May 11th\, Saturday): Explore Little Colorado and hike to the confluence then back to basecamp.\nDay 3 (May 12th\, Sunday): Hike out\, the end. 🌵 \nTO JOIN:\nPlease add yourself to the waitlist. SUMMARY:LOCAL NEWHALL HIKE: Gates Trail\, Pine Street\, Romo Trail\, and Needham Trail
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION: NEW LOCAL AFTERNOON HIKE! \nBusy on Mother’s Day (Sunday)? Then join us SATURDAY for a quick local LATER AFTERNOON hike in the Needham Ranch/Gates King Open Space in the hills south of Lyons/Newhall Avenue. \nThis is a pretty easy hike distance and elevation wise – only 700 feet of elevation and 3.4 miles\, but it it STEEP climbing near the peak – so that will get your heart pumping a bit. \nThis is apparently a new local hike option\, so we’ll explore it for the first time as a group. Parts of it may be underwhelming\, and some parts near flat\, and we’ll be following the railroad tracks for a while before climbing\, but what else you got to do Saturday anyway? \nWe’ll end up on the peaks overlooking the San Fernando Valley\, just north of the 5/14 interchange. \nLet’s meet up at 2:45 pm\, and we’ll be on the trail by 2:55 – so don’t be late! Expect 2 hours of hiking\, plus a short break at the top for a snack. \nALL TRAILS WRITE UP:\nExperience this 3.4-mile out-and-back trail near Newhall\, California. Generally considered a moderately challenging route\, it takes an average of 1 h 42 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking\, horseback riding\, and mountain biking\, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. The best times to visit this trail are June through August. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas. \nALL TRAILS REVIEW SUMMARY:\nRecent reviews describe it as empty\, peaceful\, and not very exciting. The trail is noted to be steep but short\, offering a beautiful view of multiple counties in SoCal. Some parts of the trail may be lost or washed out\, but easy to find again. Conditions mentioned in the last month include blooming flowers\, greenery\, and cool temperatures in the afternoon. The trail is considered a hidden gem\, with few other hikers encountered. Hiking poles are recommended\, and it is a great trail for dogs. Typically in May\, the area is likely to be green and cool\, with blooming flowers\, making it a good time for hiking. \nTemperatures are expected to be in the low 80’s on Saturday. \nDETAILS: \n\nHike leader: Gary S.\nDistance: Approximately 3.4 miles.\nElevation gain: Approximately 698 feet.\nTime: Approximately 2-1/2 hours hiking including a snack break.\nConditioning: You need to be in generally good physical condition.\nDogs: Dogs are welcome but need to be on a leash.\nRestrooms – None.\nAdventure Pass – None Required.\n\nIMPORTANT NOTES: We may not have a sweep\, so we ask that you all be prepared to hike at a brisk pace and stay with the group for a friendly and safe outing. \nESSENTIAL GEAR:\nHiking boots and poles.\nClothing layers recommended.\nSnacks and 2+ liters of water and electrolytes or salt tablets.\nHat and sunscreen. \nTHIS HIKE RANKING: Level 2\,\nBeginner/Intermediate: 1-7 miles\, less than 700 feet elevation gain. SUMMARY:Los Padres Potluck Hike - Mother's Day celebration
DESCRIPTION:Happy Mother’s Day 🥂♥️ \n3.5 miles\, 700′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasy Option: 2.4 miles\, 285′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and climb up to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench at the top. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to a picnic table\, we’ll stop for a social event. Let’s call it the “Giant’s Picnic Table” because of the thick pieces of wood used. \nEasy Option: In the reverse direction as the rest of the group\, go 350′ to the end of Los Padres Dr.\, left on S. Moorpark Rd. for 1000′. Enter the trail and follow it for about a mile. It will curve left and you will arrive at the social event. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nWe’ll share snacks and drinks for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map posted with description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \nHike Distance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 700′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route LINK \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike:\nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA.\nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage.\nWild Cucumber\nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish.\nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \nDirections \nLos Padres Trailhead\n15 Los Padres Dr.\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101:\nWest of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. Moorpark Rd.\nSouth on Moorpark Rd. north for 1000 ft.\nLeft on Los Padres Dr.\nAfter 200 ft\, trailhead on the right.\nPark on the street. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista Trailhead at Lang Ranch
DESCRIPTION:This will be the easier hike for Tuesday. We will also be a little slower and shorter. \nThis out-and-back of 5-miles with an elevation gain/loss of +/-900’ provides a great overview of the Thousand Oaks area\, the ocean and the western Santa Monica Mountains. The first portion is a narrow trail that zigzags its way up to enjoy views of Lang Ranch and Woodridge trails on the north and more. When the trail splits\, we’ll continue up Sandstone Hills trail until we reach 2.5 miles and then head back. \nDirections: \nFrom 101: Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.2 miles to Lang Ranch Parkway\, then turn right. Continue 0.2 miles along Lang Ranch Parkway to the trailhead\, across from the park and vault toilet. \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared. Always bring water.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Lizard Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 600′ gain\nEasier Option\, 3.5 miles\, 460′ gain \nThis is a unique loop through Wildwood Park that takes us to the famous Lizard Rock. \nThere are several extended inclines and a few short but steep climbs that cause this to be rated on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions. I may put down white powder lines so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road through a tunnel\, and turn right on to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll follow for about 1/4 mile\, and then go left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take us to the steps to the trail head parking lot. We’ll regroup. \nThose that want the easier option will cross the parking lot and take main trail (Mesa trail) straight for 1 mile\, turning right at the Lizard Rock trail\, and following it up to Lizard Rock. \nThe rest of us will continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. We make a left\, then the next right to head up to Lizard Rock\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nFinally\, we’ll head along the ridge of Lizard Rock and then down towards the Mesa Trail fire road. We’ll make a left\, and take it all the way back to the main parking lot. Then we’ll cross the lot and take the steps at the far end of the lot down\, and return on the trail we started on\, back to the tunnel and then our cars. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. Please follow the posted route and map. \nDirections\nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23.\nContinue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los Arboles\nTurn right (west) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. Time to return to a favorite trail once again! Let’s bag a couple peaks in our beautiful Western Plateau. We will do Elliott first\, then hike to our second peak where the power station is for our break. \nThis hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 6 mile +/- loop with 1600+/- ft of elevation gain. The Western Plateau is now accessible by way of Hill Canyon Fire Road or from the end of Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, and is expanding with the development of new trails to be enjoyed by hikers \, bikers and horse folks. This area is a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. \nFrom the end of Rancho Rd. we will drop down into the Arroyo Conejo/Hill Canyon area and start gaining elevation via the Western Plateau Trail to our first stop at Elliott Peak\, which affords views of the inland peaks of the Topa Topas to the Ventura coastline views of the Channel islands and Camarillo. We will then make our way via the Lichen Trail to the power station where we will take a quick break to enjoy the views\, then head back to our cars. If we have enough time\, light\, and interest\, we can hit Mount Rex from the backside. Hope you can join me. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/3/9/4/event_239205972.jpeg \nThis path is truly a new gem that I will be posting on a regular basis. Hope you can make it out to enjoy our local canyons. \nParking: \nFree on-street parking is available on Conejo Center Drive. There are “no parking” signs posted on Rancho Conejo Blvd. We will meet at/near the intersection. \nPlease do not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nEssentials: \nPlease wear – brush-resistant pants\,shorts\,& one or more wicking shirts appropriate to the temperature\, comfortable hiking shoes or light boots\, and a light backpack. \nPlease bring – at least two liters of water\, snacks\, an extra layer of clothing\, a charged cell phone\, identification\, a headlamp\, a small first-aid kit\, bug repellant and sunscreen\, a waterproof shell if rain is forecasted\, and any medications or anything else you might need on the trail. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Rocky Peak Modified - Easy Intermediate or Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\n2 miles\, 550′\, Fit Beginner \nThis is a modified version of the famous Rocky Peak hike. It gives those that want something easier\, a chance to climb one of the most well known trails in Simi Valley. \nIt contains beautiful sandstone formations throughout the hike and there are fantastic views of the valleys. There is really no way to get lost because there are no junctions. If one chooses\, they can turn around and return to the beginning at any point during this climb. \nThe beginning contains continuous and somewhat steep incline of about 1000 steps. It’s a fire road\, so it’s not steeper than a truck can climb. Still\, beginners will find this short climb to be exhausting. There is nothing wrong with taking short breaks and doing it slowly\, as there will be plenty of time. \nAfter 1 mile\, we’ll arrive at the Hummingbird trail and bench. This is where we’ll have a social event. Those that have had enough\, should wait for 30-45 min. unltil the others that went further\, return\, and can explore the various rock formations there: at least two caves along the edge of the trail within a few hundred feet. \nAdditional Segment\nThose that want something extra will continue for 1 more mile\, and just after the final and steep ascent to the top\, there will be a junction off to the right. They’ll turn around and return to the bench. Those proceeding with this segment can do all or part of it. \nAt the bench\, we’ll share snacks and beverages\, enjoy the views\, and engage in social interaction for about a hour before returning the way we came. \nIt can get windy and cool in the evening\, so I would recommend bringing something light to put on. \nInteresting Notes:\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \nDirections: \nRocky Peak Trail\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118\nExit Rocky Peak Rd.\nTrailhead on the north side. \nPark either at the trailhead (limited parking)\, or south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nTrailhead on the north side (left). \nPark either at the trailhead (limited parking)\, or south (right) of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\, easier option 2 miles.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 950′\, easier option 550′.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free at the trailhead (limited parking\, not recommended as you can get a ticket after sunset for parking there) or across the freeway 500′.\nTrail: Fire road.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnack and Beverage Share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

As we traverse the trail\, we will encounter a diverse array of geological features\, showcasing the area’s complex tectonic history. The hike leads us through ancient sedimentary layers\, evidence of the region’s marine past millions of years ago\, while also exposing them to the effects of more recent faulting and uplift\, sculpting dramatic cliffs and canyons along the way. \nAt the pinnacle of the hike stands the Devils Chair\, a striking rock formation perched precariously on the edge of a sheer cliff. This geological marvel is a testament to the forces of erosion and weathering that have shaped the landscape over millennia. From this vantage point\, hikers can behold breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys\, offering a glimpse into the geological processes that continue to shape this dynamic and ever-changing terrain. \nMeet your leader at the Trail Head: Meet at the Parking Lot near the trail head at 8:00AM for an 8:15 AM SHARP departure. \n· What3Words Map and Navigation (///replant.appreciated.works)\n· GPS Location: (34.413873784621266\, -117.85865452742534):\n· Address: 28000 Devil’s Punchbowl Rd Valyermo\, CA 93563 \nBring: Lunch/ snack\, lots of water (2 – 3 liters)\, and a camera. \nWear: Layered clothing\, hat\, sunscreen\, shoes with good tread\, and long pants because there is a lot of Poodle Dog Bush along the trail. \nOther Notes: Most of the trail is a single-track out to the Devils Chair and if hiking along steep trails freaks you out this is not the trail for you. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity.
