DESCRIPTION:An HWD Classic! \nThis hike is sponsored by Amazon – https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park\, including Century Lake. \nHike will be about 5.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. See the HWD Hike Ratings Guide – \nDIRECTIONS \nThe Old Reagan Ranch parking lot is on the Southeast corner of Cornell Rd and Mulholland Hwy \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER – https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/pages/322667/Liability_Waiver/

Pace will be fast\, although others who want to come and are slower will be met on the way back. As in the past we will head down the paved Sycamore Canyon Road and drop into the canyon. At Lynn turn right\, then left at Reino\, which turns into Potrero Road. Take Potrero to Pinehill and turn right and park (Do not park on Potereo as you need a permit). SUMMARY:Potrero – All paved – Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.75 miles\, 700′ gain. Easy Intermediate.\nDo not park on Potrero else risk getting a ticket. You need a permit to park on this street. \nThis hike is a great trail when it might be muddy because almost the entire hike is on an asphalt path through a huge state park (> 20 sq miles). It’s also a good option when it’s very hot out\, because this is one of the cooler areas where we hike\, and most of the incline is on the return\, later in the hike. \nSince the elevation gain is low and the route is paved\, we’ll be likely hiking a little faster than typical. It’s a little more than 8 miles to go all the way to the ocean. \nAt the 2.9 mile mark\, we’ll find a picnic table 350′ off to the right side\, where we’ll stop and have a social event for about an hour before heading back the way we came. There are no turns on this hike\, so as long as you stay on the asphalt path\, you really can’t get lost. \nDirections\n4161 Potrero Rd.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320\n34.156636\, -118.962989 \nNote that when turning left at the dead end to continue on Potrero Rd.\, the sign at the intersection will say S. Reina. It is that name if you go right. But we go to the left\, so it is a continuation of Potrero Rd. \nFrom the west: 101-S\, Exit 48B Wendy Dr.\, turn right.\nFrom the east: 101-N\, Exit 47C Wendy Dr.\, turn left.\nSouth on Wendy Dr. until it deadends at Potrero Rd.\nRight on Potrero Rd. for 0.5 miles.\nLeft to stay on Potrero Rd. (it is Reino if you turn right) for 0.5 miles.\nTurn right on Pinehill Ave. and park.\nWalk 800 feet back to the intersection of Potrero Rd. and Big Sycamore Canyon Rd. \nDo not park on Potrero Rd. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5.9 miles.\nGain: 700′\, mostly on the return.\nDistribution: The return section has an extended incline.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Asphalt path.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll with an extended incline.\nDuration: 3.5 hours.\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nParking: Free along Pinehill Ave. No parking on Potrero\, it is for residents with a permit only. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nThis hike is out-and-back on an asphalt path\, While it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace\, keep in mind if you get ahead\, you must know where we are stopping. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Liberty Canyon - Century Lake Loop
DESCRIPTION:We begin our journey hiking south into Liberty Canyon — one of three natural preserves in Malibu Creek State Park. The canyon has a rare stand of California Valley Oak. Soon we will cross Liberty Creek turn west onto and up the Phantom Trail. After a couple miles the trail puts us down onto Mulholland Hwy. We proceed across Mulholland onto the Cistern Trail in Malibu Creek Stat Park. The Cistern Trail ascends a bit as it leaves Mulholland Highway\, but soon after begins heading downhill\, with views of Reagan Ranch off to the right\, and the Goat Buttes and Castro Crest of Malibu Creek State Park ahead. \nAfter a short distance we will merge with the Lookout Trail and take that down to Century Lake for a snack/lunch break next to the water. For our return\, we will take Cragg’s Rd to Grasslands Trail back to Mulholland and then north on Liberty Canyon to close the loop. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM+ DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections\nPark on the south end of Liberty Canyon Rd

SUMMARY:Full Moon potluck hike Angel Vista
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nMoonrise 7:03pm \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and the full moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food\, drinks to share.\nIf your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them.\nYou may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb. \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Lang Ranch / Albertson Motorway - China Flat Pond
DESCRIPTION:This is a 6- 7 mile out and back hike with about 1150’ of elevation gain from Lang Ranch Parkway in Westlake Village on the Albertsons Motorway. Our route on the Albertson Fire Road\, which goes from the trailhead eastward all the way to Upper Las Virgenes Canyon\, and is a favorite route for hikers and mountain bikers alike. The trail is mostly a gently climbing\, well-travelled fireroad\, with a section of broad singletrack. When we get to China Flat\, we will make a right onto Palo Comado trail and go approximately 1/2 mile to see how much water is in the China Flat pond. After taking a short break at the pond\, we will return to the cars. \nStatistics: 6-7 miles with about 1150’ of climbing. \nThe Albertson Fire Road is an especially scenic route in both directions\, rising up above the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offering westward views of the Pacific and offshore islands. \nThis hike is exposed almost the entire way\, and the sun has a way of sneaking up on you even on a temperate day. Bring plenty of water and portable shade. \nFree on-street parking is available at the trailhead. \nDirections: \nFrom the East\, West & South – take the 101 toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.1 miles and turn right on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Continue 0.8 miles and park where the Lang Ranch Parkway makes a sharp left. \nFrom the North – take the 23 south toward Thousand Oaks. Exit at the Avenida De Los Arboles exit and turn left (east) on Avenida De Los Arboles. Drive 1.5 miles and turn right on Westlake Boulevard. Drive 0.2 miles and turn left on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Continue 0.8 miles and park where the Lang Ranch Parkway makes a sharp left. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Alt Intermediate Hike: Autumn Ridge to Woodridge Loop
DESCRIPTION:This double-loop route is a bisecting circumnavigation of the Lang Ranch Open Space. From the Autumn Ridge trailhead (end of North Westlake Blvd) we’ll pick up the Sunrise Trail which climbs up and and along ridge overlooking Wood Ranch. After crossing the Long Canyon junction we’ll rollercoaster down and up and down the Meadow Vista Trail with sweeping views of the Woodridge Open Space (and our old friend the Albertson Motorway). We’ll jump on Albertson Motorway to Long Ridge Trail which returns us\, via Alapay and Autumn Ridge trails\, to our starting point. \nTotal mileage for our double-loop adventure is just over 6 miles with 1\,400 foot elevation gain/loss. This route is exposed and steep at points (mainly the start to Sunrise trail) so bring plenty of water\, wear sturdy shoes and trekking poles if you use them. \nTo get to the trailhead\, exit 101 at Westlake Boulevard\, and drive north until it dead-ends at the transition between Oak Valley Lane and Autumn Ridge Drive. This is about a half-mile north of Lang Ranch Parkway (Chumash Museum)\, but offers an alternative entry into this area. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Wendy Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 1000′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasier Option – 2.7 miles\, 320′ gain \nMany have gotten lost relying on GPS. This is the Wendy Trailhead\, where S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nHeading out\, we cross a creek\, turn right at the split\, then Turn right at the dead end. We regroup at the visitor center\, where there will be bathrooms. \nWe cross the wooden bridge and go left at the asphalt path. \nAfter 1/3 mile\, those that want the easier path turn left\, go 0.4 miles and turn right at the dead end. After 500′\, wait at the bench for the rest of the group (45 – 60 min). \nThe rest will continue down for 3/4 mile. There will be a porta-potty and picnic table. We’ll regroup\, then turn right and go about 1.3 miles and another 435′ of gain before turning left and heading up about 1/2 mile. \nAt the top\, we’ll turn left for 500′ and arrive at a bench and overlook. SUMMARY:Ride the Two Winds (Dos Vientos) - Gentler Friendly
DESCRIPTION:Let’s see if we can find any wildflowers out in Dos Vientos yet? \nThis hike will loop around the periphery of Dos Vientos Open Space\, passing Twin Ponds\, overlooking Potrero Road and the Oxnard Plain with the Channel Islands in the background. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hikes\, and we will finish in about 2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. There are many confusing side trails in Dos Vientos so I ask that everyone plan to stay in contact with the group. \nPlease note this trail is very exposed (no shade) and there is no water along the way. \nDIRECTIONS: From the 101 Freeway in Newbury Park\, exit at Borchard Road. Drive 3.4 miles and turn into the Dos Vientos Community Park on the right\, just after Via Ricardo (and before Via Las Brisas). Meet by the tennis courts to the left.\nIf you are coming from the NW\, exit Wendy and turn left on Wendy and then a right on Borchard to Dos Vientos Community Park. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions.\nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers.\nThere are no “Plus One’s” on this hike. If you want to bring someone along\, have them sign up\, and make sure they’re aware of\, and agree to\, this disclaimer.

SUMMARY:West Fork National Scenic Bikeway
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/west-fork-national-scenic-bikeway \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nOkay y’all the rain is back for the weekend. So time to hit the best hike to do in the rain! Why you ask? This is a 14.5 mile hike in the San Gabriel Mountains. This little unknown gem will follow water throughout our whole hike. But we will never have to cross over it. The trail is completely paved. Yep you heard that right. It is located in the mountains/forestry with no commercial or residential anywhere insight. And will probably be the only ones there. Now for the trail…It is more of a flat paved trail (no vehicles are allowed ) that whines throughout the mountains with hanging overlay of trees above us. This trail is rated moderate due to the length and the last mile we have a gradual climb that ends at a heliport pad. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 8:45 am) have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats…https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/west-fork-national-scenic-bikeway \nTrail out and back\nMiles 14.5\nRated moderate\nElevation Gain 1167 ft\nDogs allowed\nParking paved lot ..$5.00 fee and requires a Adventure Pass ( can be bought at REI or Big 5 Sporting Goods) \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nGolden rules: \n\nHike your own hike\nPlease stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up\n\nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer: \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are of your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limit. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. We offer all levels of hikes from moderate to hard to advanced only. We encourage everyone to not give up work on your core by joining our easier moderate Events and then joining our harder hikes once you are ready. 😊
