The hike leads us through ancient sedimentary layers\, evidence of the region’s marine past millions of years ago\, while also exposing them to the effects of more recent faulting and uplift\, sculpting dramatic cliffs and canyons along the way. \nAt the pinnacle of the hike stands the Devils Chair\, a striking rock formation perched precariously on the edge of a sheer cliff. This geological marvel is a testament to the forces of erosion and weathering that have shaped the landscape over millennia. From this vantage point\, hikers can behold breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys\, offering a glimpse into the geological processes that continue to shape this dynamic and ever-changing terrain. \nMeet your leader at the Trail Head: Meet at the Parking Lot near the trail head at 8:00AM for an 8:15 AM SHARP departure. \n· What3Words Map and Navigation (///replant.appreciated.works)\n· GPS Location: (34.413873784621266\, -117.85865452742534):\n· Address: 28000 Devil’s Punchbowl Rd Valyermo\, CA 93563 \nBring: Lunch/ snack\, lots of water (2 – 3 liters)\, and a camera. \nWear: Layered clothing\, hat\, sunscreen\, shoes with good tread\, and long pants because there is a lot of Poodle Dog Bush along the trail. \nOther Notes: Most of the trail is a single-track out to the Devils Chair and if hiking along steep trails freaks you out this is not the trail for you. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY – IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nWhen you sign up for this event\, you are releasing Community Hiking Club from any liability or responsibility with your participation in this group activity. SUMMARY:Josephine Peak Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/josephine-peak-trail \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nStanding at 5\,558 feet on the western edge of the San Gabriel Mountains\, Josephine Peak is not your ordinary summit hike. The 8.5-mile (round-trip) out-and-back climb gains 2\,058 feet to a former fire lookout with tremendous views of the San Gabriels\, including Strawberry Peak. The peak is quite eclectic. Remnants of a fire lookout that stood from 1936 to 1975 were sadly destroyed by a fire\, but there’s still a bookshelf\, a concrete foundation\, and communication towers. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 8:00 am) have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats..https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/josephine-peak-trail \nTrail out and back\nMiles 8.1\nElevation Gain 1889 ft\nRated moderate\nParking side street Adventure Pass required\nDogs are allowed \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nGolden rules: \n\nHike your own hike\nPlease stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up\n\nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer: \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are of your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limit. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. We offer all levels of hikes from moderate to hard to advanced only. SUMMARY:Almost-Full-Moon potluck hike Angel Vista
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nMoonrise 4:28pm\nPhoto Credit to Helen 🙂 \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and the almost full moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food\, drinks to share.\nIf your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them.\nYou may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb. \nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Lower Loop
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe address given is not the address of the hike. It is nearby and may cause you to drive past the trailhead if navigating by GPS. \nRoute\nFrom the trailhead parking lot\, up for 0.7 mile on Long Canyon Trail to a bench. For those doing the easy option\, wait here about 40 minutes. They can spend that time going out and back in the area\, if they like. \nFor the regular route\, we continue with a 2 mile loop\, 400′ of gain:\nWe turn right\, go up 300 feet\, then down Sunrise Trail 4/5 of a mile.\nLeft at the junction for 300 feet.\nLeft at the split for 200 feet up a relatively steep incline.\nLeft on Autumn Ridge\, which is a fire road.\nContinue on this extended incline for about almost a mile\, arriving at the five-points intersection.\nTake an “easy” left\, not a hard left\, for about 500′ back to the bench where those that did the easy route will be waiting. \nWe’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes before turning right and heading back down to the trail head parking lot. \nInteresting Notes \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupify fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 3 miles\, easy option 1.4 miles.\nGain: 800\, easy option 450.\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first 15 minutes of the hike\, followed by an extended incline at the halfway point.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations: The beginning is a tough climb.\nThere is an extended incline of about 2000 steps half way through the hike.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp for hikes that end after sunset.\nSunscreen and/or hat if needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nThose that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, can head directly back down to the parking lot. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 3/4 point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. SUMMARY:Lynmere Loop from Wildwood Park (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY. \nKindly review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your attendance. \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nLet’s do Lynmere from Wildwood for a change. We will shorten it a bit. Hoping to have some relief from the sun and heat on this hike. Bring plenty of water. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take Teepee Trail to Lynmere Trail. After completing the loop we will take Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, and take our break in the picnic area. We will pick up Lizard Rock Trail and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We will either take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, or catch Mesa Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for relief from the heat for approximately 7+ miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:A16: Preparing to Climb Mt. Whitney Presentation
DESCRIPTION:This is a casual presentation courtesy of the A16 Foundation\, there is no trip leader. A great opportunity to hang out\, meet other backpackers\, and get ready for Whitney! Enjoy! \nA16 Foundation: Preparing to Climb Mt. Whitney with Jack and Betsy Northam\nWednesday\, May 22\n6:30PM “Meet n’ Drink” (food truck on site)\n7:00PM Video Presentation\nHelix Brewing Co\n8101 Commercial St\nLa Mesa\, CA \nhttps://adventure16.com/pages/events-1 \n“In this 85 minute video you’ll get plenty of valuable information about planning for your round trip on this iconic mountain. Jack and Betsy are veteran Whitney day-hikers and unofficial mountain ambassadors. As of June 2023\, perhaps better known as ‘Crazy Jack’ has safely summited the mountain over 200 times in just the past 24 years. Sometimes from start to finish all the way down in the town of Lone Pine. Betsy stops to smell and photograph the flowers so she’s only tallied nearly 70 successful climbs. Only? Once from the East Face technical rock climbing approach. So needless to say they know the mountain like the backs of their hands. They also know first hand the challenges you’ll face in the Summer and Fall and how to overcome them. Sometimes that means turning around\, and trying another day. Learn when that needs to happen. This video is a must for anyone who either has their ‘Whitney Zone’ permit in hand or is hoping to snag one at the last minute. Enjoy\, Learn & Be Inspired!”

SUMMARY:80's Invasion at Sagebrush Cantina
DESCRIPTION:Come on out and join your friends\, make new ones\, and dance to a great 80’s band at one of our favorite places. 80’s Invasion\, led by Dirk Knight and Mony Mony\, are a fun\, high-energy act that does cool covers of everything 80’s (with a little 70’s and 90’s mixed in sometimes.) They have creative costumes and interact with the audience\, as well. \nFrom A-ha to ZZ Top\, Depeche Mode to Duran Duran\, Blondie to Billy Idol\, The Cure to the Cult\, Pat Benetar to Peter Gabriel\, X to Inxs\, if it’s from the 80’s\, they have it covered. \nShow starts at 8\, arrive early for good seating. Hosts will try to post where we are\, and while we try to save tables\, it can be difficult. SUMMARY:Hiking with Mark E: Memorial Day Hike to MASH Site and Century Lake
DESCRIPTION:This relatively easy\, out-and-back hike\, travels alongside Malibu Creek through some great terrain and old growth oak trees\, with a special bonus — a visit to the site of television’s legendary program hit M*A*S*H*. The site still draws visitors from all over the world decades after the show left the air. Now on display are a recreation of the iconic signpost\, and informational panels with photographs from the show. We’ll enjoy a nice snack break here. \nOn the way\, we’ll drop into Century Lake — a secluded area\, where we can enjoy its serenity at a lakeside picnic table. The famous cliff dive seen in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was shot here \nABOUT THE PARK \nMalibu Creek State Park is the is the former location ranch of 20th Century Fox studios who owned the land between 1946 and 1974. Considered the recreational crown jewel of the Santa Monica Mountains\, MCSP has over 8\,000 acres of rolling tallgrass plains\, oak savannahs and dramatic peaks. It’s no wonder many call it “The Yosemite of Southern California” \nHIKE RATING \nAt about 5 miles and 400 feet total ascent\, the hike is rated EASY+ — see the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nParking is $3/hr or $12/day at gate. Free passes are available at your local public library.

SUMMARY:Dos Vientos - Memorial Day Picnic
DESCRIPTION:5.2 miles\, 1140′ gain\, Intermediate\nBeginner Option: 3.5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nCome to the hike only (2:30p)\, picnic only (4:00p)\, or both. \nThis event has limited space. Those still on the waiting list will be moved to the RSVP list several days before the event\, or even the day of the event\, if there is space\, with priority to those that hike with us regularly. \nWarning: Google Maps may take you to the incorrect location\, although the address is correct. Please follow the written directions. \nThe Hike\n2:30 pm at the parking lot entrance. \nWe take the Park View trail\, flat along a gravel track\, moving around Dos Vientos park. It then gently rises into the hills\, continuing onto the Powerline trail. \nSome sections are strewn with small rubble but there are still clear foot paths along the edge. It will get the heart pumping. At the height of this point\, there is a fantastic overlook. \nFor some additional challenge\, one can continue another 0.85 miles for another 450′ of gain and 190′ on the return. It continues to the next electrical tower where the trail splits. This leads to the 2\,200 feet high Conejo Mountain in Camarillo\, CA. \nWhether you decide to take the extra segment or not\, you will be rewarded by great views. This trail offers panoramic views of the Oxnard Plain\, the Pacific Ocean\, numerous Channel Islands\, Boney Mountain\, Mugu Lagoon\, and the Topa Topa Mountains. \nI will be marking the trail with white arrows at junctions so that nobody gets lost and hikers can turn around at any point. \nThe Picnic\nApproximately 4:00p.\nWhen entering from Borchard\, turn right immediately after the driveway\, then left to the end of the lot. Alternatively\, enter from Via Ricardo\, picnic area on the right. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. \nYou can leave your pot luck item in the car and retrieve it after the hike. Please bring something to put on in case it starts to get cool. \nAlcohol IS allowed in this park.\nPhotos from 2023 \nThe Park\nThe Dos Vientos building is open until 5pm. The park has plenty of parking in a paved lot\, has indoor drinking fountains and bathrooms\, and various picnic areas with barbecue grills. \nInteresting Notes.\nYou will see these on the hike. \nPrickly Pear Cactus\nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn off needles. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nLichen\nA composite organism arising from algae\, cyanobacteria\, or both\, and often fungi. They come in many colors. Not related to moss or any plant. They get all their food from photosynthesis\, air\, water\, and minerals in their environment. Most comes from air\, and therefore\, can be used to monitor air pollution. 6% of earth’s land surface is covered by lichens. This is the paint that gives the look of the rocks of Yosemite. 20\,000 known species. Self-contained ecosystems. Some of the oldest living things. SUMMARY:Los Robles trailhead\, walking down to Las Padres and up and around
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nThis will be a much easier hike for Tuesday. We will go slower and with less elevation gain and less miles. Anyone who wants to add more mileage\, can take the loop near the Greenmeadow Parking lot. \nWe will start in the parking lot at the end of Moorpark and walk down the street to the Las Padres trail. From there we will loop around and come back to the Moorpark trailhead via the Los Robles trail. This should be around 4 miles with maybe 800 feet elevation gain. Those who want to hike faster can wait for me at the forks. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful hike. We might even see some wild flowers. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. Go to the end of Moorpark but don’t turn down Greenmeadow\, just park at the end of Moorpark. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/ \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list \nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike \nNo dogs \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Chumash Trail to Rocky Peak/Triangle
DESCRIPTION:We’ll hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley to join the Rocky Peak trail. We’ll turn left to head to the “Triangle” where several trails meet and provide panoramic views. The hike will be an out and back\, and will be 7.7 miles with 1600 ft gain. It’s mostly a single track trail during the first climb with pretty views of the hills around. The final mile or so to the turn-around is fire-road. \nWe recommend you use poles as the Chumash Trail has some rocks on it. \nThe Chumash Trail showcases the unique geological timeline of the area with striking rock formations and hilly landscapes. Siltstone and sandstone reveals transformations over millions of years. Fossils of ocean invertebrates and vertebrates found along the trail are evidence of a time when the local hills were underwater. The Simi-Santa Rosa fault crosses the ridge near the intersection of the Chumash-Rocky Peak trails. \nDirections: put “Chumash Park and Trail” into your chosen map service. We will park at the end of Flanagan Drive or thereabout. From the 118\, exit Yosemite headed north\, turn right on Flanagan Dr after .4 miles\, then proceed about .8 miles to trailhead on right. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY\nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nBy now you should know the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes.
