DESCRIPTION:Hike #12 in the 2023 Saturday in the Santa Monica Mountains series\, will be an adventurous 11-mile\, 3000’ hiked from Burbank Peak to Beacon Hill passing by Bee Rock\, the Hollywood Sign\, Dante’s View\, and the Old Zoo. Peaklets\, rocks\, and hills include Bee Rock (1056’)\, Taco Peak (1572′)\, Mt. Bell (1587’)\, Baby Bell (1570’)\, Mt. Chapel (1622’)\, Mt. Lee (1640’)\, Cahuenga Peak (1820’)\, Burbank Peak (1190’)\, Mt. Hollywood (1626’)\, Glendale Peak (1190’)\, Beacon Hill (1001’)\, and even peaklets we will name on the hike. Lunch will be enjoyed at the Wisdom Tree. Poles could be useful on some portions of this route and long pants and long sleeve shirt recommended. Bring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. \nPlease fill out and print the Sierra Club medical form and bring it with you. We will return the same way. Trip is a total of 12 miles with 3900 ft of gain. Leaders will provide an overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC)\, which begins January 2024. SUMMARY:Wind Wolves Preserve - A Favorite CHC Hike!
DESCRIPTION:DESCRIPTION:\nHike leader volunteers: Nancy H.\nMeet: Wind Wolves Preserve at The Crossing Parking Lot at 8:15am\, departure at 8:30am sharp.\nDistance: 8.3 miles\nElevation gain: Approx 1020 ft\nTime: ~ Approx 4 hours hiking including one snack break \nThe Wind Wolves Preserve is a hidden gem. We’ll start from “The Crossing” Parking Lot and will hike along the creek trail via San Emigdio Canyon\, then clockwise up the back of the mountain on the Tule Elk Trail. We’ll stop for a break and snack and enjoy the breathtaking vista\, then head back. The wildlife here is abundant during the winter months as the Tule Elk herds migrate to lower elevations\, as well as the Mule Deer. Plan on dressing in layers as it will be chilly here. \nNote: Go to the end of this road\, past the “The Crossing Campground”. \nThere are clean flushing toilets\, sinks\, paper towels at the Crossing and further up the canyon. Entrance & parking is free. \nConditioning: you need to be in generally good physical condition\nDogs: Must be on leash.\nRestrooms – Near trailhead and another one before our ascent.\nAdventure Pass: Not Required \nWARNINGS: \n\nThere are a number of shallow stream crossings. DESCRIPTION:Kern Gateway Trail Proposal\nThe Kern Gateway Trail team is a group of community members with a love of the Kern River canyon who are working to create a connected trail in the Kern River Canyon. \nJoin us to hear about and explore a spectacular section of the proposed Kern Gateway Trail. We will do a brief presentation about the trail concept and a hike to see a section of the trail. This is a great opportunity to experience what the Kern Gateway Trail can offer our community. \nThere is a short but steep climb at the beginning of the trail. Bring hiking poles\, trail shoes with good tread\, water\, food\, sunscreen\, and the ten essentials if you plan on hiking with us after the presentation. The proposed trail is to the right of Stark Creek. \nPark at Stark Creek. GPS Coordinates: 35° 28′ 31.79″ N\, 118° 43′ 27.91″ W by 9:00 a.m. \nFor Bakersfield carpoolers\, meet at the Shell gas station on HWY 178 and Commanche by 8:15. We will leave peomptly at 8:30. SUMMARY:San Francisquito Canyon South via Pacific Crest Trail

This trail is rated high on AllTrails and not a very populated trail either. A lot of solitude and backcountry mountains. The starting point of this trail will have the most incline with most of the trail being more of a easier moderate hike. only a few gradual inclines. Will be hiking passed the Bob Kimmerly Memorial Bench. Bob Kimmerly was the brainchild of a 50K and 50-mile trail run called the Leona Divide 50. He passed away from cancer in 1992 before it came to fruition\, so others brought the race to reality and created this bench to honor him. This area is known for a lot of snow during the winter season and hot during the summer. So right now is a good time to hit this trail. SUMMARY:Browns Canyon - Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our loop hike begins in the Twin Lakes neighborhood and meanders north through along Browns Canyon Creek. We’ll eventually head west along a network of trails across Deerlake Highlands and descend Echo Canyon connecting our loop with Devil Canyon. Devil Canyon\, with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment\, makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. Live Oak and Willow trees fill the canyon and sandstone geology of the wildest kind is found. \nThere will be a few creek crossings but I suspect they will be low enough now to keep us dry. \nHike will be about 6.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and rated MEDIUM. DESCRIPTION:The hike will be about 4.5 miles with about 500 ft. of elevation gain. We will start on Peters Canyon Trail and take this to East Ridge View Trail. This is where we will go up Big Red. Then we will continue on this trail until we get to Eucalyptus to loop back. DESCRIPTION:This is an adventurous Sunday Griffith Park Peaklet 11-mile\, 3000’ hiked from Burbank Peak to Beacon Hill passing by Bee Rock\, the Hollywood Sign\, Dante’s View\, and the Old Zoo. Peaklets\, rocks\, and hills include Bee Rock (1056’)\, Taco Peak (1572′)\, Mt. Bell (1587’)\, Baby Bell (1570’)\, Mt. Chapel (1622’)\, Mt. Lee (1640’)\, Cahuenga Peak (1820’)\, Burbank Peak (1190’)\, Mt. Hollywood (1626’)\, Glendale Peak (1190’)\, Beacon Hill (1001’)\, and even peaklets we will name on the hike. Lunch will be enjoyed at the Wisdom Tree. Poles could be useful on some portions of this route and long pants and long sleeve shirt recommended. DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 700′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasy Option: 2.4 miles\, 285′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and climb up to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench at the top. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to a picnic table\, we’ll stop for a social event. Let’s call it the “Giant’s Picnic Table” because of the thick pieces of wood used. \nEasy Option: In the reverse direction as the rest of the group\, go 350′ to the end of Los Padres Dr.\, left on S. Moorpark Rd. for 1000′. Enter the trail and follow it for about a mile. It will curve left and you will arrive at the social event. \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food and/or drinks to share. If your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nWe’ll share snacks and drinks for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map posted with description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \nHike Distance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 700′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike:\nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA.\nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage.\nWild Cucumber\nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish.\nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. SUMMARY:Feel the Peace\, Love\, and Joy ~ Intermediate Hike from Wendy Trailhead
DESCRIPTION:Let’s head out to the famed Peace\, Love\, Joy arch at the Danielson. This out and back hike wanders through grasslands and chaparral from the Wendy trailhead\, then climbs up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. If it’s a clear day we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nAt the upper end we’ll visit the remnants of an old cabin and the Danielson Monument. The monument is dedicated to Richard Danielson\, the person who donated much of the land for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNMRA). The hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. We will cross 2 streets along the way. \nThis hike is about 5.0 miles with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nPace: This is a gentler friendly hike. We will go at a slightly slower pace than the Intermediate Trailblazer Hike\, and we will finish in 2 1/2 hours. Faster hikers are welcome to join us so long as they are willing to hike at the slower pace of the group or wait at the forks on the trail. DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Beginner \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and have a social event\, right on the trail. We’ll share snacks and beverages. For the return\, we go back the way we came. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes:\nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)\nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. SUMMARY:Solstice Canyon - Sostomo - Deer Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:Solstice Canyon is the quintessential coastal canyon. The year-round stream provides ample water to support this 550-acre park’s numerous plant communities and a diverse wildlife population. \nYou will love the natural beauty of Solstice Canyon\, yet wildfires have left behind the architectural ruins of our recent past. During our trek we will pass remains of the Keller House\, a stone hunting cabin built over one hundred years ago\, and significantly damaged by fire in 2007. Upon arriving at the park’s most popular feature\, the 30′ Solstice waterfall\, we will find the stone and brick ruins of The Roberts Ranch house designed by architect Paul Revere Williams in 1952. In 1929\, Williams became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects and later designed a prominent landmark at the Los Angeles International Airport\, the “LAX Theme Building (1961).” \nWe will extend the classic Solstice Canyon hike by taking the Sostomo Trail and Deer Valley Loop Trail. The trail meanders through chaparral and coastal sage scrub to the western ridge of Solstice Canyon. After a couple of stream crossings we will encounter breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for the ruins of several cabins burned in past wildfires. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1900 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM+ DUE TO TERRAIN. Sturdy tennis shoes OK. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom PCH\, turn inland on Corral Canyon Rd. and proceed north for about 0.2 mile until you arrive at the entrance to the Solstice Canyon Park. Turn left and proceed along Solstice Canyon Rd for about 0.5 mile until you arrive at the second parking area. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park (Fast Paced - over 3+ mph)
DESCRIPTION:Please bring a headlamp or flashlight. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take the trail down by the teepee to Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, pick up Lizard Rock Trail\, and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We’ll take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, and either catch Mesa Trail or Moonridge Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for approximately 5 miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. We will take a break somewhere in our travels. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Overflow and earlier hikers: an 8:30 alternative to the Stagecoach Museum hike. \nMeet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:As a local alternative to Steve’s hike in Ventura here is the option: \nThis is a 4-5 mile out-and-back trip from Lynn Road to the Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista. We’ll park at the playfield near Stagecoach Inn and walk from Lynn Road on the lower Rosewood Trail\, to the usual trailhead and then on up the trail. The elevation gain/loss is about 875’ – 1000’. It is a well maintained trail with lots of foliage but relatively little shade. SUMMARY:Hawk Canyon lollipop - Pot Luck hike
DESCRIPTION:4.2 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate.\nEasier option: 2.7 miles\, 500′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 3/4 point by a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, any utensils your items might require. \nWe have had occasions where there were no utensils\, so it might be wise to at least bring your own. \nWe start at Conejo Canyons Trail Head\, 2010 Conejo Center Dr\, Thousand Oaks\, CA 91320. \nWe’ll hike downhill from the trailhead for 0.6 miles. \nFor the regular route\, we’ll turn left and continue uphill for 0.6 miles on the Western Plateau trail and follow the fire road around to the right at the top\, then mostly flat for about a mile\, then dropping for another 1/2 mile. \nAt the bottom and when coming to a junction\, turn right onto Hawk Canyon. Our picnic spot is 1/4 mile up Hawk Canyon at the table under the trees. \nFor the easier option\, instead of turning left at the first junction\, we’ll turn right. After 0.6 miles\, the picnic area will be on the left. \nAfter the potluck\, we’ll continue up Hawk Canyon in our clockwise loop for 0.6 mile where the trail ends back at the Western Plateau trail. DESCRIPTION:We will be playing it by ear a bit\, but we will be doing a hike that will be around 5 miles with 800-900 ft. of elevation gain. \n**You do not need to register on LetsGoOutside.org\, but if is optional and you will be emailed extra details and a map. \nhttps://letsgooutside.org/activities/2023/12/16/wilderness-access-day-bommer-canyon-114/ \nEnjoy self-guided access in the southern portion of Irvine’s Open Space Preserve. The entire southern Open Space Preserve trail network will be open for self-guided hiking and biking from 8 am to 2 pm. This includes the single-tracks in Shady Canyon and Bommer Canyon that are reserved for guided activities only. Registration is not required for this event\, though it is shown on the website. If you need driving directions\, please use the online registration to receive a map and instructions for getting to Bommer. The Bommer Canyon Cattle Camp will be available for parking\, but please take note that your vehicle must be removed from the Cattle Camp area by 2 pm. \nSpecial Notice: Parking at the Bommer Canyon Cattle Camp is extremely limited due to ongoing construction and will be available on a first come-first serve basis. Additional parking may be available at the Bommer Canyon Trailhead and Turtle Rock Community Park. DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing will be around 5 miles long with 875 ft. of elevation gain. This will be a loop starting at the parking lot of Nix Nature Center. As you will see on the map\, this is at the main park entrance off of the 133 (Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area). Please reference the map for a detailed location as there aren’t many streets to list for directions. \nThe hike we will be doing will start on the Little Sycamore Canyon Trail. Then we will turn left onto the Serrano Ridge Trail\, then another left onto the Camarillo Canyon Trail. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start (early to beat the heat) our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain.
