SUMMARY:Latigo Canyon to Upper Solstice Canyon ~ Gentler Friendly (but not easy!)
DESCRIPTION:Down and up and down\, and then up and down and up. We will hike out and back on the Backbone Trail from Latigo Canyon\, across Castro Crest and descending into Upper Solstice Canyon. 2.7miles out\, 2.7 miles back. Elevation gain is about or under 1050 ft. Trail is single track almost all the way. \nWe’re starting high\, dipping down\, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we’re accustomed to in this area. The floor of Upper Solstice will be our turnaround point. \nThis hike is about 5.5 miles round trip with about 1050’ gain. \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101\, take Kanan Dune Road south for 6.8 miles. Turn left\, heading east on Latigo Canyon Road\, and drive three miles to the unmarked dirt lot on the left. Use your odometer to gauge the distance. \nFrom PCH\, drive 7.3 miles inland on Latigo Canyon Road. After passing Upper Ramirez Motorway\, turn right into the dirt pullout at the trailhead. SUMMARY:Hike Bommer Ridge into Laguna Coast Wilderness - Loop
DESCRIPTION:The total distance for this hike is 4.5 miles with about 650 ft. of elevation gain. There are great mountain and ocean views along the ridge. \nWe are going to start on Bommer Ridge Trail and take this to Lizard Trail. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy CC Loop - Suitable for Fit Beginners
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe address given\, is not the address of the hike. It is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. \nThose that prefer the Easy Option\, should head UP from the trail head\, waiting when they get to the bench at the top. \nFor the rest of us: Starting from the trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses\, which is the back way. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a sharp left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll meet with those that took the easy option\, and stop for a snack and beverage share. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail down to the parking lot. \nInteresting Notes:\nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched\nElderberry  – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \nHike\nDistance: 3 mi (easier option\, 1.4 mi)\nGain: 650′ (easier option\, 450′)\nDistribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner.\nShape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations: The beginning is a flat walk. The middle has an extended incline of about 1000 steps. Mentryville and Pico No. 4 are registered as California State Historical Landmarks. \nThe beginning of the hike is on an asphalt road which yields to a fire road and untimely a single-track trail. DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing is approximately 5 miles with 870 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe will begin at the Live Oak Trail trailhead. This is where you will see on the map that the Live Oak Trail hits the paved road. This is the parking lot closest to the Edna Spaulding Trail. (There should also be someone at the gate when you come in that can direct you where to go.) \nWe start by going up Live Oak Trail and up Vista Trail. We will take back Hoffman Homestead Trail\, Coyote Trail\, and back to Live Oak. SUMMARY:Oak Canyon to China Flat - A Double Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:This hike was requested by the original Mark E🙋🏻‍♂️. \nPerched 2\,000 feet above sea level in the hills between Simi Valley\, Oak Park and Thousand Oaks\, China Flat is an idyllic 1\,100-acre oak meadow that features rocky sandstone outcroppings and native oak woodlands.\nAlong our route we will pass by an old cistern\, a small silo and an abandoned farm vehicle that are vestiges of the area’s ranching history. There is also a vernal pond. \nWe’ll get there via the Rocky Ridge Open Space – a steep climb on the east side of Oak Canyon Community Park. After a loop around China Flat we will regturn via the China Flat Trail then down along Medea Creek that flows through the park into a duck pond by our cars. \nHike is about 6.5 miles with 1600′ total ascent and rated MEDIUM+ – see the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nWe’ll be meeting by the duck pond at Oak Canyon Community Park in the first lot immediately to the left after entrance \nIMPORTANT\nTrail statistics are approximate. Please bring food\, drinks to share.\nIf your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them.\nYou may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. SUMMARY:Happy Camp 2 - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.7 Miles\, 1000′ gain\, Intermediate \nThe starting point is NOT at the golf course entrance. It is at a dirt lot that can hold at least 50 cars. There is some real incline on this hike and a lot less trails coated with silt compared to the easier Happy Camp hike. \nEven though I have rated this “intermediate”\, there are no steep sections. The 2nd quarter is an continuous fire road incline that can get exhausting. \nWe start with about 1.25 miles of relatively flat and slightly downhill double-tracker. Then we start up a fire road for 1.5 miles with a continuous incline of 700′. This section can be exhausting\, so I’ve rated the hike on the easy end of the Intermediate spectrum. \nA strong and motivated beginner can do this hike\, but they will be challenged and slow during this segment. That’s OK\, because this is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to regroup\, and there is nothing wrong with taking many small stops along this section to catch your breath. \nAfter having done two segments\, we’ll reach a steel hitching post and clearing\, where we’ll have a social event lasting about an hour. We’ll be rewarded with spectacular views in all directions. During the day\, you can easily see the ocean and Channel Islands. SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon Evening Hike
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THE PARKING/MEETUP LOCATION ABOVE (IT’S NOT WENDY & POTRERO). Do not park on Potrero Road as it is for residents only. Take a right at the stop sign on Potrero Road and park on Pinehill Avenue or Greenwood Street. \nRemember to bring a flashlight or a headlamp. \nDue to the rains we will be going down Sycamore Canyon as an out and back. \nHike will be 5-6 miles\, and about 1150 ft. up. Pace will be fast\, although others who want to come and are slower will be met on the way back. As in the past we will head down the paved Sycamore Canyon Road and drop into the canyon. We will turn back before the campground as the road usually gets muddy right before the turnoff. We’ll take a quick break and back up the Sycamore Canyon Road to our cars. \nDIRECTIONS: \nTake Highway 101 to Thousand Oaks. Exit at Wendy Drive. Go south (towards the ocean) on Wendy. At Lynn turn right\, then left at Reino\, which turns into Potrero Road. Take Potrero to Pinehill and turn right and park (Do not park on Potereo as you need a permit). Walk back along Potrero to its intersection with Big Sycamore Canyon Road that is more or less across from 4153 Potrero Road. We will start hike there. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Paradise Falls - Moonridge - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.3 miles\, 800′ gain\, fit beginner \nA hike to Paradise Falls is one of the most popular things to do for those visiting Simi Valley\, yet a lot of people that live nearby rarely make this fun hike or perhaps have never done it. There are several paths one can take to the falls. This one is the Moonridge loop from Mark T. \nThe waterfall is always flowing. It is fed by urban run-off\, surface water waste created by urbanization\, and feeds into a small pond. \nWe start from the tennis court lot 4 blocks E. of the main parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll head about 100 steps north and go down and into an under-street tunnel to cross the road. Turn right out of the tunnel\, and follow this path around. \nThere are several splits of this trail\, so follow the group. The trail leads through a thick canopy to the bottom of the steps that lead to the main parking lot. We’ll regroup there. \nWe’ll continue along the Moonridge trail\, following it around\, crossing a fire road\, and left at the North Teepee trail for about 500′ to a large Teepee. We can take a few pictures\, there’s a drinking fountain\, and we can rest a moment. Then we’ll continue down to the waterfall and hang out for a short while. \nTo continue\, we’ll head partly back up and cross the back side of the waterfall along Wildwood Canyon trail. After about another 200 yards\, we’ll come to couple picnic tables on the right where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the entire snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back: \nYou can either follow the posted route and map\, or take this alternate route: left at the next junction\, a relatively steep up for 200 yds. back to the Teepee\, turn right and continue 1/2 mile until it dead-ends\, turn right. After 1/2 mile\, you reach the main parking lot. Turn right at the road for 4 blocks and cross the street to find the tennis court parking lot. \nContinuing with the group\nWe’ll continue for 1/3 mile along the Wildwood Canyon trail\, cross the bridge\, make a left\, and follow the Indian Creek trail for 1 mile until arriving back through the tunnel and back to the parking lot. \nIf you are not following the leader on the return\, you should know:\nAfter crossing the bridge and turning left\, you will come to a creek. We’ll be taking a sharp turn to the left a few feet before the second creek. It’s easy to miss and almost doesn’t even look like a trail. \nYou will see several plants of note \nPrickly Pear Cactus\nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn or scrape off needles – even stones can be used if you don’t have a knife. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nSugar Bush\nLooks almost like Laurel Sumac. Pointy leaves\, which is one way to tell it apart from the Lemonade berry. Has fuzzy red berries in long clumps that can be used to make a lemonade like drink. Sap from the fruit can be used as a sweetener. Leaves are edible. \nDirections: \nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118\nCA-118 west to CA-23 south\, 4.8 miles to exit 15\, Avenida de los Arboles.\nTurn right (west) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. SUMMARY:Hike to the Hollywood Sign/Bronson Caves - Mt. Lee Summit
DESCRIPTION:I’m very excited to plan another hike up to the Hollywood Sign and the Bronson Caves. \nThis will take us to the summit of Mt. Lee where we will get the best views of the Hollywood Sign. The total mileage for our journey will be approximately 7 miles. Our elevation change should be about 1\,200 ft. \nWe will meet at the end of Canyon Drive which is where we will park. There will be parking options right at the address listed\, on the left\, and also right before that lot on a dirt patch. \nWe will be on Canyon Drive to start on up the canyon. Once we hit Mulholland Trail we will head left and this will take us to views of the front of the Hollywood Sign. After this we’ll go a short ways up the spiral road up to the summit of Mt. Lee. Once we’ve reach the top\, we’ll head back down to where we started. Once we get to the end\, we’ll go on a slight detour to the Bronson Caves. This is the Batcave from Batman. How cool is that?! \nBring lots of water\, sunscreen\, snacks/food\, jacket\, and anything else you think you’ll need. \nHere is the address (this will take you to the parking lot): 2974 Canyon Drive\, Los Angeles\, CA 90068 \nDogs are allowed on this hike. \nThere is a bathroom in the parking lot. \nPlease ask any questions you may have.

DESCRIPTION:Hike #1 in the 2024Saturday in the Santa Monica Mountains\, is a moderate 8 mile\, 900’ gain out and back hike starting at Paramount Ranch and hiking into Malibu Creek State Park with lunch at the MASH site and return by different trails with views of Malibu Lake as we head back. \nBring water\, snacks\, sunscreen\, and a good attitude. Rain\, excessive heat\, or Red Flag alert cancels. \nMeet at 8:00 AM at the Paramount Ranch parking lot (free). Turn right on Malibu Canyon Road for 6.3 miles then left on Mulholland Highway for 3.2 miles then a right onto Cornell Road for 0.4 miles. Paramount Ranch is on your left. Once on the access road\, go to the left and park. \nThis is a Sierra Club hike\, so participants must sign in\, carry their medical form\, and hike between the leader and sweep. The Sierra Club medical form is available at ttps://tinyurl.com/ycy985mt. We ask you to print it out and carry it with you\, but the form will be available at the trailhead as well.

SUMMARY:Las Llajas Canyon Trail to Coquina Mine Trail Loop (Marr Ranch Open Space)

We’ll hike at a moderately brisk 2-1/2 mph pace\, taking about 3-1/2 hours to complete including a 20 minute snack break at the Coquina Mine Quarry site. All hikers should be able to keep up with the pace of the group\, or you may be asked to sign out if you cannot keep pace. \nSite Info: This hike is located in the hills of Simi Valley\, California\, north of the 118 Freeway. We’ll start up the Los Llajas trail from the trailhead\, and climb\, then switch trails to the Coquina Mine Trail. Explore an abandoned quarry site with heavy mining equipment. The geology of the area is a mix of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks\, including sandstone\, shale\, and limestone. The rocks at the Coquina Mine Trail have been subjected to various geologic processes over millions of years\, including erosion\, uplift\, and tectonic activity. These processes have created the unique geological features that are visible along the trail\, including exposed rock layers\, rock formations\, and geological structures and should make for interesting hike. \nHike leader volunteers: Gary S (Julie Assisting)\nDogs: OK\, if well behaved around other dogs/ people with hiking poles and on a leash.\nRestrooms – None\nAdventure Pass: Not required.\nBring: This is a fully exposed rocky trail\, so wear appropriate hiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop - Extended
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Another HWD Original! \nMy Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! I’ve redesigned the hike so if you have done this with me in the past you can look forward to something a little different this time \nHike into History\nA Visit to the Rancho El Escorpion Lime Kiln \nBell Canyon is the location of the Rancho El Escorpion lime kiln site. The site sits on  a seam of limestone running from Bell Canyon to Dayton Canyon and the Woolsey Canyon area (the sites of 2 more kilns). The kiln was constructed over a time period starting between the late 18th  and early 19th  centuries by a succession of native Chumash people and others of mixed Chumash and Mexican heritage. \nThe kiln was used to process quicklime (used on the San Fernando Mission buildings) throughout the nineteenth century. Over the years the kiln has become almost entirely covered with dirt\, its mouth filled in\, and is difficult to see (without me showing it to you). \n\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				2018\n				\n			\n				\n			\n				\n				1987\n				\n		\n\n  \nViewing the Bell Canyon Limestone Quarry \nIn 1939 to 1941\, the limestone hilltop at the mouth of Bell Canyon was used to face the Sepulveda Dam Basin. \n\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_message message_box_color=”warning”] Hike is about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as MEDIUM+ due to terrain. Learn how to backpack in 3 Saturday courses (4/27\, 5/4\, 5/11) culminating in a backpack 6/1-2. Course times are 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM Learn what to take\, latest in equipment\, what to do before you leave LA. Backpacking equipment demonstrations\, giveaways and refreshments at classes. Send contact info including\, phone number\, email\, and $50 payable to the Sierra Club and mail to David Meltzer\, 214 Main Street #353\, El Segundo\, CA 90245. The Course will be held in La Cresenta. Once your registration is confirmed you will receive more info.\nYour check secures your reservation.\nThis class fills up every year so please be sure to sign up early by sending in your check.
