SUMMARY:CHC Camping Trip Stony Creek Campground\, Sequoia National Forest August 25-27
DESCRIPTION:Sequoia National Forest is a beautiful alpine area with some of the largest trees on earth – the giant sequoias. Our campground is near a beautiful natural granite waterslide with swimming holes. Come prepared to get wet! Campground is about 4.5 hours from Santa Clarita. Road closures may cancel trip. \nAdd your name to the COMMENTS or chat so the coordinator can reach out. You will receive more information after you RSVP\, including maps\, etc. Bonnie T. will be in site 21. \nYou must also reserve your own campsite for Aug 25-27. We are not permitted to reserve for you. Reserve NOW to get a spot! \nSites are available for reservation at: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232785?tab=info.  \nYou may have 6 people per site\, and the fee is $32 per night. This does not include the park entrance fee of $35 per vehicle. RV spaces are available\, lengths vary by site. \nDirections: From Fresno\, California\, go east on Highway 180 to the Kings Canyon National Park entrance. Take a right at the General’s Highway\, traveling approximately 10 miles south to Stony Creek Campground. After you pass Stony Creek Village (lodge and store)\, look for Stony Creek Campground on the right a couple of miles down the road. NOTE: There is also an Upper Stony Creek Campground on the left side of General’s Highway. This hike has a nice gradual walk until we start a gradual climb were we will start our loop. We should encounter wildflowers and mountain views. Our loop will drop down then we will continue until we start our climb back up. From there it will be all downhill and straight back to our cars. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Almost-Blue-Moon potluck hike Angel Vista
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and the almost Blue moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food\, drinks to share\, your own cup\, plate and utensils. \nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. (A photo on your phone is fine.) No card: No hike. \n\n\nWelcome Trailblazers! Time to return to a favorite trail once again! Let’s bag a couple peaks in our beautiful Western Plateau. We will do Elliott first\, then hike to our second peak where the power station is for our break. \nThis hike will be a fast-paced\, moderately strenuous 6 mile +/- loop with 1600+/- ft of elevation gain. The Western Plateau is now accessible by way of Hill Canyon Fire Road or from the end of Rancho Conejo Blvd.\, and is expanding with the development of new trails to be enjoyed by hikers \, bikers and horse folks. This area is a beautiful system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus\, and ridgelines in the northwest portion of the Conejo Valley. \nFrom the end of Rancho Rd. we will drop down into the Arroyo Conejo/Hill Canyon area and start gaining elevation via the Western Plateau Trail to our first stop at Elliott Peak\, which affords views of the inland peaks of the Topa Topas to the Ventura coastline views of the Channel islands and Camarillo. We will then make our way via the Lichen Trail to the power station where we will take a quick break to enjoy the views\, then head back to our cars. If we have enough time\, light\, and interest\, we can hit Mount Rex from the backside. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start (early to beat the heat) our hike near the beginning of Regal Oak Ct. on the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue to the usual Rosewood trail. Rosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing is a loop at about 5.5 miles with 725 ft. of elevation gain. We will meet at the Willow Staging Area that is right off of the 133. \nWe will begin at the trail head of the Laurel Canyon Trail. SUMMARY:Lower Sycamore Canyon on a Hot Day
DESCRIPTION:While the heat is once again with us\, we will stay fairly close to the coast and keep our elevation gain to a minimum. Temps are forecast to reach 89 at the furthest interior point of the hike\, which we should get to by 9:30-10:00 a.m.\, before the heat of the day. \nWe will start in the day use parking lot at Sycamore Canyon Campground and head up the dirt trail\, possibly as far as Wood Canyon. We may actually see water running in Sycamore Creek\, and perhaps from the spring in Wood Canyon \nThis out and back hike is a maximum of 8 miles with 535 feet of elevation gain\, less if it’s too hot. The hike will take place in Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. The trail is wide\, but poison oak is widespread. If you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Sycamore Canyon Campground day use paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. SUMMARY:Potrero – All paved – Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.75 miles\, 700′ gain. Easy Intermediate. \nDo not park on Potrero else risk getting a ticket. You need a permit to park on this street. \nThis hike is a great trail when it might be muddy because almost the entire hike is on an asphalt path through a huge state park (> 20 sq miles). \nThere is an extended incline on the return. \nSince the elevation gain is low and the route is paved\, we’ll be likely hiking a little faster than typical. It’s a little more than 8 miles to go all the way to the ocean. \nAt the 2.9 mile mark\, we’ll find a picnic table 350′ off to the right side\, where we’ll stop and have a social event for about an hours before heading back the way we came. There are no turns on this hike\, so as long as you stay on the asphalt path\, you really can’t get lost. \nDirections \n4161 Potrero Rd. \nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \n34.156636\, -118.962989 \nNote that when turning left at the dead end to continue on Potrero Rd.\, the sign at the intersection will say S. Reina. It is that name if you go right. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Los Robles via Los Padres Dr EARLIER START
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: EARLY START at 8:15 at Los Padres Drive \nWith any luck we will encounter the faster hikers of Nancy’s 8:30 group. \nIt is still very hot\, so we will take this Los Robles trail with lots of trees and begin at 8:15 and hopefully finish by 10:17. \nThis is a loop of about 4.5 miles with about 800′ of total elevation gain\, spread out nicely\, with a little bonus loop through Oak Creek Canyon. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, relaxing hike. Our start is a magical little woodlet with a seasonal stream. We’ll then go up on the Los Robles Trail and at elevation get a view of Conejo Valley. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. Drive about 0.4 miles turn left (the 2nd off Moorpark) on to Los Padres Drive. The trailhead is on the right across from Woodlet Way. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Starting at 8:30 \nIt is still very hot\, so we will take this Los Robles trail with lots of trees and begin at 8:30 and hopefully finish by 10:30. \nThis is a loop of about 4.5 miles with about 800′ of total elevation gain\, spread out nicely\, with a little bonus loop through Oak Creek Canyon. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, relaxing hike. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Double Loop Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate \nEasy option: 2.5 miles\, 500′ gain \nParking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section for 1/2 mile\, turn right\, and make a gradual climb until just before the wildlife tunnel. \nWe turn left and take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. \nEasy Option: Wait at the pavilion for about 35 minutes. \nThe rest of the group will hike a 1.5 mile loop\, returning to this same place. \nWe’ll turn right and loop through the park. We’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nWe’ll turn right at the top\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a social event. \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nIt’s not clear when the park officially closes. \nIt used to be posted that it closes at sunset\, but the trailhead sign was replaced with one without a closing time and RSRPD Rules were recently updated to say: Park hours are between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. unless otherwise posted. \nHowever another member says they are still announcing the park is closing\, about sunset. So for this hike\, we’ll try to start heading back before dark. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. Will be hiking throughout the Point Mugu State Park. This route is rated hard but all the incline shows moderate and will be throughout the hike with most beginning in the middle. This trail is also rated 4.7 out of 5 due to the scenic views. Will be on both fire roads and narrow trails with some shade but most of the trail looks to be open views. Now for the downside…The parking lot looks to be on the small side so unless you can carpool will have to do a waitlist and may not be able to move everyone over. SUMMARY:Hike to the Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall - Gabrieleno Trail
DESCRIPTION:This hike is so cool! It’s a good distance with little elevation gain and it is beautiful. \nThis hike will take us to the Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall. The hike is an out and back at around 8 miles total with 750 ft. of elevation gain\, so not steep! This area of the Angeles National Forest is beautiful so I’m really looking forward to this hike. \nThere are a lot of shallow water crossings\, so please be prepared to get your feet wet. DESCRIPTION:5.2 miles\, 1140′ gain\, Intermediate\nBeginner Option: 3.5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nCome to the hike only (2:30p)\, picnic only (4:00p)\, or both. \nWarning: Google Maps may take you to the incorrect location\, although the address is correct. Please follow the written directions. \nThe Hike\n2:30 pm at the parking lot entrance.\nIf it’s too hot to hike\, we’ll just start the picnic! \nWe take the Park View trail\, flat along a gravel track\, moving around Dos Vientos park. It then gently rises into the hills\, continuing onto the Powerline trail. \nParts are strewn with small rubble but there are still clear foot paths along the edge. It will get the heart pumping. At the height of this point\, there is a fantastic overlook. \nFor some additional challenge\, one can continue another 0.85 miles for another 450′ of gain and 190′ on the return. It continues to the next electrical tower where the trail splits. This leads to the 2\,200 feet high Conejo Mountain in Camarillo\, CA. \nWhether you decide to take the extra segment or not\, you will be rewarded by great views. This trail offers panoramic views of the Oxnard Plain\, the Pacific Ocean\, numerous Channel Islands\, Boney Mountain\, Mugu Lagoon\, and the Topa Topa Mountains. \nThe mountainside is mixed with the remnants of a brush fire and new growth. I will be marking the trail with white arrows at junctions so that nobody gets lost and hikers can turn around at any point. \nThe Picnic\nApproximately 4:00p.\nUnder the awning to the right of the parking lot (entry: west from Borchard) immediately after entering. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. SUMMARY:Arroyo Conejo Trail to Lynnmere Trail ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will start by following the pleasant single-track on the left (not the road to the right\, which descends to a dead-end at the creek) from the Rancho Conejo Playfields in Newbury Park. The trail skirts the edge of a neighborhood and its steep-walled canyon\, which provides great scenic views along the Barranca and through riparian native plant communities\, Wildwood Park\, and the Pacific Ocean. There is a creek crossing with rocks and wood pallets to make “dry crossing” easy when we reach the bottom of the canyon. Then\, we will turn right at a T-junction and begin a steady climb out of the canyon to the Lynnmere Trail. The trail passes the backs of some houses\, dips into a woodland\, and emerges into a meadow where we get a panoramic view to the west. Here\, we will retrace our way back to the Arroyo Conejo Trail and back to the parking lot. \nThis hike is about 5 miles long with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 1000 feet. \nDirections: \nFrom 101 Freeway\, drive 1/4 mile north on Ventu Park Rd. SUMMARY:Hike at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park - Nix Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing will be around 5 miles long with 875 ft. of elevation gain. This will be a loop starting at the parking lot of Nix Nature Center. As you will see on the map\, this is at the main park entrance off of the 133 (Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area). Please reference the map for a detailed location as there aren’t many streets to list for directions. \nThe hike we will be doing will start on the Little Sycamore Canyon Trail. Then we will turn left onto the Serrano Ridge Trail\, then another left onto the Camarillo Canyon Trail. DESCRIPTION:This week we’ll do a loop around the northeastern regions of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and the Las Virgenes Open Space. This area traverses many ecosystems\, including riparian\, chaparral\, and the rockscape from Galaxy Quest. SUMMARY:Happy Camp 2 - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.7 Miles\, 1000′ gain\, Intermediate \nThe starting point is NOT at the golf course entrance. It is at a dirt lot that can hold at least 50 cars. There is some real incline on this hike and a lot less trails coated with silt compared to the easier Happy Camp hike. \nEven though I have rated this “intermediate”\, there are no steep sections. The 2nd quarter is an continuous fire road incline that can get exhausting. \nWe start with about 1.25 miles of relatively flat and slightly downhill double-tracker. Then we start up a fire road for 1.5 miles with a continuous incline of 700′. This section can be exhausting\, so I’ve rated the hike on the easy end of the Intermediate spectrum. \nA strong and motivated beginner can do this hike\, but they will be challenged and slow during this segment. That’s OK\, because this is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to regroup\, and there is nothing wrong with taking many small stops along this section to catch your breath. \nAfter having done two segments\, we’ll reach a steel hitching post and clearing\, where we’ll have a social event lasting about an hour. We’ll be rewarded with spectacular views in all directions. During the day\, you can easily see the ocean and Channel Islands. Finally\, we’ll head back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes \nThese are plants you will likely see on this hike. \nWhite Sage \nIt is very aromatic and is the plant burned in “smudging” to ward off evil spirits and perform other purification. \nAlong the second half of the outbound section\, both sides of the trail have patches of White Sage. \nBlack Mustard \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road.
