SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:A slightly shorter alternative to the overflowing Lang hike. This hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe will meet on Regal Oak Ct. near the Lynn Rd. intersection. \nFrom there the hike to the lower Rosewood Trail\, a dirt trail heading up a shaded ravine at the base of the mountains\, and continue on the Rosewood trail to Angel Vista. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Lang Ranch / Albertson Motorway ~ a gentler friendly hike
DESCRIPTION:http://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/5/d/4/600_351021972.jpeg \nThis is a 6 mile out and back hike with about 1150’ of elevation gain from Lang Ranch Parkway in Westlake Village on the Albertsons Motorway. Our route on the Albertson Fire Road\, which goes from the trailhead eastward all the way to Upper Las Virgenes Canyon\, and is a favorite route for hikers and mountain bikers alike. The trail is mostly a gently climbing\, well-travelled fireroad\, with a section of broad singletrack. We’ll hike a half mile past the Bridal-Path Home Owners Association portcullis then turn around and head back down. \nStatistics: 6 miles with about 1150’ of climbing. \nThe Albertson Fire Road is an especially scenic route in both directions\, rising up above the Simi and Conejo Valleys and offering westward views of the Pacific and offshore islands. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/3/7/0/600_351029552.jpeg \nThis hike is exposed almost the entire way\, and the sun has a way of sneaking up on you even on a temperate day. Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.1 miles and turn right on the Lang Ranch Parkway. Exit at the Avenida De Los Arboles exit and turn left (east) on Avenida De Los Arboles. Drive 1.5 miles and turn right on Westlake Boulevard. Drive 0.2 miles and turn left on the Lang Ranch Parkway. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy CC Loop - Suitable for Fit Beginners
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, Fit Beginner\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe address given\, is not the address of the hike. It is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. \nThose that prefer the Easy Option\, should head UP from the trail head\, waiting when they get to the bench at the top. \nFor the rest of us: Starting from the trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses\, which is the back way. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a hard left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll meet with those that took the easy option\, and stop for a snack and beverage share. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail down to the parking lot. \nInteresting Notes:\nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched\nElderberry  – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \nHike\nDistance: 3 mi (easier option\, 1.4 mi)\nGain: 650′ (easier option\, 450′)\nDistribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner.\nShape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations: The beginning is a flat walk. The middle has an extended incline of about 1000 steps. DESCRIPTION:Many from this group\, plus other friends\, will attend this event at Sagebrush Cantina. The band playing (Hindsite) puts on a fantastic show\, playing dance\, pop\, r&b/funk\, and hip hop music from the 70′ up to the latest hits. \nThis is one of the best venues I’ve experienced on LA’s west side\, and this is one of the best bands I’ve seen at this venue. Come see a Hollywood quality show for free. Hindsite will have you dancing all night! \nWe’ll be seated either in the outdoor area\, or indoors\, depending on the weather. Expect at least 70 of us. SUMMARY:Hike to the Hollywood Sign/Bronson Caves - Mt. Lee Summit
DESCRIPTION:I’m very excited to plan another hike up to the Hollywood Sign and the Bronson Caves. \nThis will take us to the summit of Mt. Lee where we will get the best views of the Hollywood Sign. The total mileage for our journey will be approximately 7 miles. Our elevation change should be about 1\,200 ft. \nWe will meet at the end of Canyon Drive which is where we will park. There will be parking options right at the address listed\, on the left\, and also right before that lot on a dirt patch. \nWe will be on Canyon Drive to start on up the canyon. Once we hit Mulholland Trail we will head left and this will take us to views of the front of the Hollywood Sign. After this we’ll go a short ways up the spiral road up to the summit of Mt. Lee. Once we’ve reach the top\, we’ll head back down to where we started. Once we get to the end\, we’ll go on a slight detour to the Bronson Caves. This is the Batcave from Batman. DESCRIPTION:We are going to hike on Bommer Ridge Trail the whole time. We are going to take this until we hit the top of Boat Canyon\, and then turn around. \nThe total distance for this hike is 7.6 miles and we will get 900-1\,000 ft. of elevation gain. SUMMARY:Saddle Peak/Topanga Lookout Trails ~ Fun Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:We will have two short hikes; Saddle Peak hike (about 2.5 miles with approximately 450′ elevation gain) and Topanga Lookout hike (about 3 miles with approximately 300′ elevation gain). \nWe will begin Saddle Peak hike at the end of the Stunt Road hike near the intersection of Stunt Road and Schueren Road. Saddle Peak offers beautiful\, panoramic views of the Malibu Mountains with striking views of the Pacific\, Calabasas Peak\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return to the beginning point. Then\, we will proceed to Topanga Lookout hike. \nWe will head up the Topanga Tower Motorway which crosses a junction\, (Fossil Ridge Trail/Backbone Trail)\, and continue up the paved road toward the radio towers atop the summit. When a wide dirt trail veers off to the left\, follow this track along the ridge uphill and down to the lookout. The large\, graffiti-covered concrete foundation at the site of the old fire tower offers amazing views of the surrounding mountains and landscape\, wide and far. \nThese hikes comprise about 5 miles with 700-800’ elevation gain. \nDirection:\nFrom the 101 freeway\, exit Las Virgenes Road and head south toward Malibu. After 2.8 miles turn left (east) on Mulholland Highway. Turn right on Stunt Road after 4 miles and drive another 4 miles to the top of the road at the intersection with Schueren Road and Saddle Peak Road. Park along the side of the road.\nFrom PCH\, turn inland on Las Flores Road (across from Duke’s Restaurant). Drive 3.4 miles up this narrow twisting canyon and turn right onto Rambla Pacifico Street. SUMMARY:Fossil and Old Boney Trails - Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us on this sweet (maybe not so sweet!) hike that wanders through grasslands and chaparral\, down into a canyon\, then up to eye-stretching views. \nWe will follow Sycamore Canyon fire road until it intersects with the Fossil Trail. We will then take the Fossil trail to the Old Boney trail. The Fossil trail features a hunk of fist-sized marine fossils smack dab in the middle of our path- we’ll actually walk on prehistory. \nIf it’s a clear day\, we’ll easily be able to see Santa Cruz Island\, as well as the Los Padres Mountain range. When we reach the Old Boney trail\, we will make a left and continue on Old Boney until it intersects with the Danielson Fire Road. We will then take the Danielson Fire Road back to the cars. \nThis hike will be approximately 6.5 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1700 feet. Bring poles if you favor them. \nDIRECTIONS: \nExit Ventura Fwy (101) at Lynn Road. Take Lynn Road southwest 5.25 miles to Via Goleta. Rancho Sierra Vista entrance (through the stone pillars and arch) is on the left. DESCRIPTION:3.2 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy intermediate. \nThe first part is a steady incline\, followed by a rolling trail to our destination. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. There are no super steep sections. \nThis hike takes us to a secret spot below a large rock formation. Naturally into the side of the rock is a half-globe carved out of it\, giving us a quasi-cave area to sit and have our social event. \nThis is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. SUMMARY:Kanan Dume Almost to Castro Peak OAB (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:Our Out And Back (OAB) hike will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 60-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 3 1/2 miles and up 1250 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, crossing Latigo Canyon Road\, and then ending at a saddle or on a bluff immediately south of Castro Peak with spectacular Pacific views. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/8/0/6/event_101654342.jpeg \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail. The trail is renowned for its natural beauty\, historical significance\, and breathtaking vistas. \nHere’s some information about the Path of the Gods hike: \nLocation: The Path of the Gods is situated in the Campania region of Italy\, on the Amalfi Coast. It stretches between the towns of Bomerano in Agerola and Nocelle near Positano. \nDistance and Difficulty: The length of the trail is approximately 7.8 kilometers (4.8 miles). It’s considered a moderate hike\, with some uphill and downhill sections. DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Gentler Friendly (but not easy!) Latigo Canyon to Upper Solstice Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Down and up and down\, and then up and down and up. We will hike out and back on the Backbone Trail from Latigo Canyon\, across Castro Crest and descending into Upper Solstice Canyon. 2.5 miles out\, 2.5 miles back. Elevation gain is about or under 1000 ft. Trail is single track almost all the way. \nWe’re starting high\, dipping down\, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we’re accustomed to in this area. SUMMARY:Sunset Hike
DESCRIPTION:Turtle Rock and French Hill hike. There are several hills with sweeping views of the coastline. The hike starts with a heart pumping hill then goes on to a series of rolling hills and some neighborhood connections. 4.2 miles\, 900 feet of overall elevation gain. Although not considered easy\, it is certainly a great doable training hike and a wonderful opportunity to meet other hikers. \nBring a flashlight or a headlamp in case the group pace is slow and it starts to get late. Also\, bring water\, a snack\, sun protection while the sun is out\, and an extra layer of clothing in case it cools down. \nParking is along Concordia Street. You’ll see a smiling Amanda in a bright green shirt.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Tunnel Loop - Intermediate. Easier Option: Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate – 3 miles\, 1000′ gain\nEasier Option – Fit Beginner\, 1.4 miles\, 525′ gain. \nThis hike is relatively short\, but the middle portion is a rugged and continuous incline for 1 mile with about 700′ of gain. Even though we’ll be taking this trail at the pace of a social hike\, beginners may find the intermediate option to be too hard. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until we reach the wildlife tunnel. \nThis is a tunnel underneath the CA-118 freeway\, built so that animals can cross. We’ll regroup here\, then continue up a strenuous and rugged climb for 1 mile until we reach the Rocky Peak Fire Rd. We’ll regroup again\, then turn left for 500′ until we reach the Hummingbird Trail. \nWe’ll find a couple large rocks and a bench there. We’ll have a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, then head down the Rocky Peak Fire Road until it ends at the CA-118 freeway. We’ll then cross the freeway back to our cars. \nEasier Option: Hike up Rocky Peak 0.7 miles to the Hummingbird bench. This is about 1/3 up Rocky Peak. \nInteresting Notes:\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. SUMMARY:Hike at Caspers Wilderness Park - Bell Canyon + Oso Trail
DESCRIPTION:The hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. Volunteers will join the St. Francis Dam National Memorial Foundation to clean up the St. Francis Dam National Memorial and National Monument. DESCRIPTION:This out-and-back\, about 5 miles hike with an elevation gain/loss of +/-1000’ provides a great overview of the Thousand Oaks area\, the ocean and the western Santa Monica Mountains. The first portion is a narrow trail that zigzags its way up and if you reach the top\, you’ll be enjoying 360 degree views toward Boney Mountain on the west\, Lang Ranch and Woodridge trails on the north and more. \nDirections: \nFrom 101: Exit at Westlake Boulevard and turn north (away from the ocean). Drive 4.2 miles to Lang Ranch Parkway\, then turn right. SUMMARY:Fall on Autumn Ridge - A Seven Trail Walkabout
DESCRIPTION:Let’s celebrate the first full week of fall with a seven (7) trail tour in and around the Lang Ranch Open Space. From our Lang Ranch starting point (end of North Westlake Blvd) we will take the Autumn Ridge Trail to the Sunrise Trail and the Woodridge Connector which climbs up and over the ridge to Wood Ranch. From there we will use the Long Canyon Trail to climb to the first of our panoramic vistas at the top of Long Canyon. Then we rollercoaster down and up the Meadow Vista Trail to sweeping views of the Woodridge Open Space (and our old friend the Albertson Motorway). To complete our circuit we return via Rocky Incline Trail (aka ‘Hidden Canyon”) to Alapay Trail to Autumn Ridge. \nSounds like a lot but don’t worry\, our 7 trail adventure is just under 6 miles with 1\,100 foot elevation gain/loss. But\, keep in mind that the route is exposed and sometimes steep so bring plenty of water\, wear sturdy shoes and bring trekking poles if you use them. \nTo get to the trailhead\, exit 101 at Westlake Boulevard\, and drive north until it dead-ends at the transition between Oak Valley Lane and Autumn Ridge Drive. SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate and Easy Option
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate\nEasy option: 450′\, 50′ gain\, short walk.\nThe Easy Option does not start at the same place\, but gets you to the social event. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that\, according to others\, were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. There\, we’ll have a social event lasting 30-90 minutes\, sharing snacks and beverages. \nThere are a few different places all at the top\, where we have been having our social event\, depending on wind level and direction\, plant growth for blocking sound\, etc. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. The return route may be slightly different than the way up through a parallel path. The host may mark the path on the way up using baking soda. \nEasy Option\nThe group should arrive at the Social Event area about 7p\, and will likely be visible from the easy option Lilac trailhead parking lot. \nFrom the Lilac trailhead\, walk straight ahead from the lot\, moving east. After about 350′\, bear right at the fire road. Follow it as it curves right. After 25′\, find the group 50′ on the left. If we aren’t there yet\, wait for the group to make their way up\, or turn right and do a mini hike down the trail until the group reaches you\, then go back up with the group.
