SUMMARY:Day Hike of Bishop Pass Trail (w/ optional hike of Treasure Lakes Trail)
DESCRIPTION:Description: This is a DAY HIKE of at least 10 miles. The night before the event\, we sleep at the overnight parking area of the South Lake Trailhead. Some may arrive early during the day to acclimatize with the elevation. On the day of the event (Saturday)\, we meet at the South Lake Trailhead\, where there is a restroom and bear boxes\, at 7:00 a.m. Then\, we start our hike at 7:30 a.m. \nLast year\, we did this as a 2-night backpacking trip. We set up our tents near the vicinity of South Lake on the first day\, stayed overnight\, hiked Bishop Pass the next day\, broke camp\, and headed home without staying for a second night. Considering that we won’t be hiking with a heavy pack on our back\, this year we are therefore doing it as a day hike instead. \nAfter the hike\, participants will have a choice to head home or spend the night at the overnight parking area and hike the Treasure Lakes Trail (a short but very beautiful hike) the next day. \nAllTrails info (Bishop Pass Trai): \nhttps://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/bishop-pass-trail \n“The trail starts at South Lake trailhead and climbs to the valley between the Inconsolable Range and Hurd Peak. As you gain altitude the scenery just gets better. At about 3 miles you will arrive at Long Lake and you can see the pass with its numerous switchbacks. You will climb a series of granite benches\, with many lakes and ponds. The highest lakes are are found at the foot of Mt.Thompson and Mt.Goode. It is extremely rocky in this area\, but the footing is not bad. Once you reach the summit (11\,972 feet)\, you are rewarded with views of the vast and beautiful basin below. You now have the option to continue on and cross the pass to descend into Dusy Basin and LeConte Canyon where the trail eventually meets the John Muir Trail.” \nAllTrails info (Treasure Lakes Trail) \nhttps://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/treasure-lakes-trail \n*******************************************************************\nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. DISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY: IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY I am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. Outdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 3 miles\, 700′ gain\nEasier Option: 2.4 mi\, 530′ gain (1366 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065). \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nThe Hike\nWhile I rate this hike “Easy end of the Intermediate Spectrum” due to the 1 mile continuous incline that can get exhausting\, a fit beginner can easily complete it. \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave. Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nFor those that want a little easier option start at this address: 1366 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks (zig-zag trail) for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. Beginners may find this climb difficult to continue at a fast pace. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute several times during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nAt the top by the cross\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. \nDistance: 3 miles (round trip)\nElevation Gain: 700′\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\nDuration: 3 1/2 hours\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes – at nearby places of business\nDrinking Fountains: Yes – at nearby places of business\nParking: Free\nTrail: Mostly single-track\, excellent condition\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. \nWhat to Bring\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFrequently Asked Questions\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:WRIGHT MOUNTAIN - The quest continues
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https:/ \n————————————————- THE QUEST ——————————————\nMy pursuit of taking on Mount Baden Powell the hard way\, via The Big Horn Mine on my 75th birthday\, continues as I get my self in shape by taking on Wright Mountain this week. \nJoin me and experience the thrill of hiking in the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains as we take on Twin Peaks. This trek is only 7 miles with a 2500′ overall gain consisting mostly of the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail).\nThis all day trek is for those of you who are looking for something a lot more challenging than the average outing. No beginners please unless you’re in good physical condition. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone. \nPOLES ARE RECOMMENDED \n———————————————– DAY’S AGENDA ——————————————\nSTART: We’ll start the hike by heading up Acorn Dr. to the Acorn Trail. \nACORN TRAIL: In the fall\, this is one of the best places to view all of the colors the trees have to offer. The Acorn Trail then traverses up the east side of Acorn Canyon on the ridge that separates Acorn Canyon from Heath Canyon. This area offers great views looking down at some of the residential areas of the town of Wrightwood. The trail continues traversing gradually to the top of Blue Ridge\, climbing just over 1\,700 feet in 2 miles. The end of the trail connects with the PCT. \nTHE PCT: The Pacific Crest Trail’s 2\,653 miles is mostly through National Forest and protected wilderness. It also passes through seven national parks as it makes it way from the Mexican U.S. border to Canadian U.S. border. SUMMARY:Lizard Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 600′ gain\nEasier Option\, 3.5 miles\, 460′ gain \nThis is a unique loop through Wildwood Park that takes us to the famous Lizard Rock. \nThere are several extended inclines and a few short but steep climbs that cause this to be rated on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions. I may put down white powder lines so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road through a tunnel\, and turn right on to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll follow for about 1/4 mile\, and then go left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take us to the steps to the trail head parking lot. We’ll regroup. \nThose that want the easier option will cross the parking lot and take main trail (Mesa trail) straight for 1 mile\, turning left at the Lizard Rock trail\, and following it up to Lizard Rock. \nThe rest of us will continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. We make a left\, then the next right to head up to Lizard Rock\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nFinally\, we’ll head along the ridge of Lizard Rock and then down towards the Mesa Trail fire road. We’ll make a left\, and take it all the way back to the main parking lot. Then we’ll cross the lot and take the steps at the far end of the lot down\, and return on the trail we started on\, back to the tunnel and then our cars. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. Please follow the posted route and map. \nDirections\nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23.\nContinue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los Arboles\nTurn right (west) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. SUMMARY:Angel Vista - almost full moon potluck hike - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and almost full moon at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nFAQ\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Onion Valley to Kearsarge Pass and beyond - day hike
DESCRIPTION:Onion Valley to Kearsarge Pass and beyond \nThis is an out and back day hike that will begin at 8:30am on Saturday\, July 9th. \nThis is an extremely popular trail known for its spectacular beauty and as a gateway to the Sierras. You can expect a mixture of shade and sunshine and beautiful lakes along the way to satisfy your need for wilderness eye candy. \nThere are two options for this hike\, one will take you to Kearsarge Pass which will be approximately 4.7 miles one way with about 2\,600 feet in elevation gain\, making this a 9.4 mile hike. The views from Kearsage Pass are the true highlight of the hike as you peer into Kings Canyon and see a wonderland of lakes and mountains displayed in the distance. The elevation at Keasarge Pass is 11\,760 feet. \nThe second option will take us down to Bullfrog Lake after reaching the high point of Kearsarge Pass. Bullfrog Lake is actually two lakes with elevations of 10\,700 and 11\,000. Taking the trail down to Bullfrog Lake into King’s Canyon National Park will make the hike approximately 11.6 miles total. \nKeep in mind that this is a high altitude hike that begins at 9\,185′ and you need to be prepared to recognize and respond to altitude sickness (AMS)\, if that happens to you. AMS is a serious and sometimes deadly condition. Please read more about altitude sickness here\, https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/altitude-sickness \nTo help with the acclimating to the high altitude\, I have two campsites reserved Gray’s Meadow (3 miles from the trailhead) the night before the hike (07/08) and the same date of the hike (07/09). If you sleep at the higher elevation\, it will help with acclimatization. I will post a separate event just for the camping\, if you care to join me. Otherwise\, with a start time of 8:30am\, it is possible to make the drive from Los Angeles in about 3 1/2 hours so you could come for just the hike and return home the same day. I will be camping on Saturday night so I don’t have to drive back after the hike. If enough people are interested\, we can have a post-hike group potluck on Saturday night. \nMISCELLANEOUS: Everyone who signs up for this event must have a recognizable profile photo. Also\, everyone goes to the wait list first and I will add you to the hike based on my knowledge of your hiking abilities. No plus ones. \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY:\nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nHope you can join me!

SUMMARY:Wildwood Park - Las Flores - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:**Fit Beginner – 4 miles\, 600′ gain**\nThe gain is well distributed\, with half being on the return. \nThis will be a chance for our weekday hikers to do the hike that is usually just done on weekends\, and you’ll also get a chance to see Paradise Falls. \nWe start at the Las Flores trailhead where Las Flores dead-ends at Wildwood Park\, and head west. After 1/3 mile\, the trail becomes Wildwood Canyon Trail. We continue for another 2/3 mile and cross a bridge just past the Meadows Picnic area. \nWe’ll make a left\, continuing on Wildwood Canyon Trail\, past the Tee Pee Trail\, behind Paradise Falls\, left at the split\, and after about a mile\, Wildwood Canyon Picnic area will be on the left. There will be several tables. \n**Snack Share.** Please bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. *If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share.* We’ll [share snacks and drinks](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 60 – 90 minutes\, before heading back the way we came. \n**The Hike**\nDistance: 4 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nDuration: 4.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: Free along street. \n**What to bring**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots.\nFlashlight or headlamp (if it will be dark during any part of the event).\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \n**Hosting** \n*Route:* The host knows the route. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops:*\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \n*Group separation:* Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions**\nLas Flores Trailhead\n604 W Avenida De Las Flores\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91360 \n**[Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions)**\n**[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)**

SUMMARY:4th of July Celebration Potluck Hike - Los Padres
DESCRIPTION:**3.25 miles** **out and back\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.** \nLet’s celebrate the Fourth of July with a great potluck and fireworks! \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then climb until we reach the fireroad at the 1/2 mile point. We’ll stop and regroup here. \nWe’ll turn right up the fireroad and climb for about a 1/2 mile to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. After 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop for another 1/2 mile until we come to a bench at the top. \nWe’ll have a **potluck here and watch the fireworks**.\nYou may wish to bring something to sit on\, such as a camp chair or a blanket. The bench and area around it will be used to place our pot luck items. \nWe’ll follow the reverse route back to the cars sometime after the fireworks. It will be dark on the return trip\, so please bring a light. \nPlease bring something to eat and drink\, we’ll [share snacks and drinks](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nIf your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nIf you wish to leave early\, please study the map posted with description so you are able to navigate the return without the host. \nHike Distance: 3.25 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \n**Hosting** \n*Route:* The host knows the route. **A pic of the route** [LINK](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/f/1/a/highres_504907962.jpeg) \n*Navigation:* Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \n*Hike type:* Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops:*\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \n**Interesting Notes** \nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \n*[Yucca](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/f/5/9/highres_501944889.jpeg)* \nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \n*[Wild Cucumber](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/f/5/9/highres_501944889.jpeg)* \nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \n**Directions** \nLos Padres Trailhead\n15 Los Padres Dr.\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101:\nWest of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. SUMMARY:Grizzly Flat Trail from Vogel Flat
DESCRIPTION:Needed an easy-ish hike to stretch the legs and get some fresh air. The weather should be a bit cooler and the trail is partially shaded. Water crossings may or may not be avoidable and we may or may not make a bushwhacky detour to a likely dry waterfall. IF the parking lot is closed\, park in the turnout on the hwy. I won’t be in a hurry and will make stops to regroup and cool down. \nThe Grizzly Flat Trail departs from Stoneyvale Picnic Area. We will follow it on a single track crossing the Tujunga River several times. It is usually possible to keep your feet dry but will depend on water levels. We will then be exploring a couple of nearby creeks\, a 75′ waterfall and make our way back over to part of the Grizzly Flat Trail. We should be back to the cars before lunch. \nShould you join us\, you must okay with scrambling\, possible bushwhacking\, water crossings\, mindful of poison oak\, loose rocks\, etc. \nThe Stats: \nDistance: 6-ish miles\, out and back \nElevation Gain: <1500 feet (a guess) \nRating: 4 for creek and scrambling lovers; 7 if you’re not \nTrail: single track\, overgrown\, a little bushwacky at times\, rock-hopping\, bouldering. \nADVENTURE PASS REQUIRED \nThis location does require a National Forest Adventure Pass for parked vehicles. These passes can be purchased at most ranger stations (if open) in the area of our hike\, most sporting goods\, convenience stores and gas stations. The cost is $5/day or $30/yr. When buying an annual pass for $30 you can also buy an additional annual pass for $5. Splitting this fee with someone is the most economical way to get the passes. A National Parks Pass can also be used for parking as well and should have come with a rear view mirror hanger. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/2/7/5/3/600_466510067.jpeg \nDirections: \nFrom Interstate 210 in Sunland\, exit on Sunland Boulevard and head east. It turns into Foothill Boulevard. Continue east to Oro Vista Ave. Turn left. Follow Oro Vista which veers right and turns into Big Tujunga Cyn Rd. Proceed to Vogel Flat Road and turn right again. The road drops to a stop sign. To the right is a Forest Service fire station. Turn LEFT and park in the Stoneyvale Picnic area. \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/2/7/4/b/600_466510059.jpeg \nThe Story: \nIn the 1800s\, a large population of grizzlies roamed the San Gabriel Mountains. The bears frightened early miners and settlers and in later years had many run-ins with sportsmen and forest rangers. Big Tujunga Canyon was a particularly attractive habitat to the big bears; in fact\, the last wild grizzly in Southern California was killed in the lower reaches of the canyon in 1916. \nThese days you won’t find any grizzlies atop Grizzly Flat; just a few hikers enjoying a pine-shaded retreat in the Angeles National Forest. Grizzly Flat Trail explores Tujunga Canyon\, then rises into the storied hills where notorious highwayman Tiburcio Vasquez eluded a posse in 1874. Vasquez\, after robbing a San Gabriel Valley rancher\, rode over the top of the San Gabriels\, descended north along a then-unnamed creek to Big Tujunga Canyon and made good his escape. The unnamed creek\, which cuts through the eastern edge of Grizzly Flat\, has since been known as Vasquez Creek. \nThe hike: The trail\, signed with the international hiking symbol\, begins at a vehicle barrier at the east end of Stonyvale Picnic Area. Almost immediately\, you cross Big Tujunga Creek. Small trail markers keep you on the path\, which crosses a boulder field and fords the creek three more times.\n(John McKinney\, LA Times) \n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n************************** \nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/8/0/0/600_455451200.jpeg \n\n****************************************\n\nThe Fine Print\n\nPLEASE - Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun.\n\nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member)\n\nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit.\n\nhttps://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/8/4/8/600_455451272.jpeg\n\nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE\n\nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these!\n\n1 – A long walk\n\n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain\n\n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain\n\n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times)\n\n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times)\n\n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR)\n\n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself)\n\n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader)\n\n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities)\n\n10 – Use your imagination\n\nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. SUMMARY:Three Points to Pacifico Mountain Campground via Pacific Crest Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/three-points-to-pacifico-mountain-campground/photos \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nTime to get in a long endurance hike. This is gonna be a long day but worth the trek. This time of year we will probably see a lot of thru hikers on the PCT trail. This trail will be both exposed and shaded. This will be a great conditioning hike as it is gradual with the last part being the climb up. Some people have stated that the trail is longer but they did veer off the original map to take an easier way to the top and back. We will be on the PCT through the route so the trail should be easier to follow now that it is open after being closed due to covid. This is a forest setting surrounded by mountains. This is a lesser known trail besides the PCTers. The temps are supposed to cool down this weekend but bring extra water just incase. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 5:45am) I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/three-points-to-pacifico-mountain-campground/photos \nTrail out and back\nMiles 18.7\nElevation Gain 3234ft\nRated Hard\nDogs allowed but must be conditioned for a longer harder hike\nParking must have Adventure Pass displayed \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:\n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (you’ll need extra water for this one) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike all responsibilities are of your own once you attend please be aware of your limits.

SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:**[5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Beginner](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)** \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and wait there for anybody that needs to catch up\, and share snacks and/or beverages. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \n**Interesting Notes:** \n*[Tree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/e/b/a/highres_502756058.jpeg)* \nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \n**The Hike**\nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: [Beginner.](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \n**What to bring:**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \n**Hosting** \n*[Route](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/e/a/8/highres_502756040.jpeg) and Navigation:* Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \n*Hike type:* Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops:*\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions or turns once past the initial path down to the fire road. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \n*Group separation:*\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions**\nLas Llajas Canyon Trail\n5715 Evening Sky Dr\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \n*From the west*\n23-N to 118-E\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nFrom the east: 118-W\, Exit 29 Yosemite.\nHead north on Yosemite for 1.25 miles. Turn right (east) on Evening Sky Drive and proceed for 0.5 miles.\nSee the trail head on the left. Park along the street. \n[Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions) \n**[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)**

SUMMARY:ISLIP PEAK - The quest continues
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https:/ \nTHE QUEST: My pursuit of taking on Mount Baden Powell the hard way\, via The Big Horn Mine on my 75th birthday\, continues as I get my self in shape by taking on Mount Islip this week. \nJoin me and experience the thrill of cross country hiking in the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains. We’ll be taking on Mount Islip from Windy Gap\, but we won’t be doing it the easy way via the PCT. Instead we’ll be dropping down to a trail on her south face before linking up with a trail coming up from Crystal Lake so as to make it more of a challenge. From there the fun begins as we go xcountry down to the PCT which will take us to the Mount Williamson Trailhead via Islip Saddle. This trek is only 9+ miles\, but it packs a punch with a 3000′ overall gain consisting of some popular trails\, “use trails” and no trail at all. This will be accomplished by way of a car shuttle.\nThis all day trek is for those of you who are looking for something a lot more challenging than the average outing. No beginners please unless you’re in top physical condition. Cross country hiking experience would help for this. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone. \nMICRO SPIKES\, POLES AND GATORS ARE RECOMMENDED \nDAY’S AGENDA \nSTART: After dropping a car off at The Williamson Trailhead we’ll drive to the Windy Gap trailhead where the trek begins to Mount Islip. \nMOUNT ISLIP: Standing at 8200′\, this sharp high peak provides impressive views of the Mojave Desert\, the Los Angeles Basin\, Santa Catalina Island\, and San Clemente Island on a clear day. From here\, there will be no trail as we make our way down a ridge to the PCT trail which will take us to Islip saddle. \nISLIP SADDLE: This saddle sits between the two sister peaks Williamson and Islip\, and is the second highest pass along the Angeles Crest highway. We’ll pass through this saddle as we hike along the PCT trail. \nPCT TRAIL: The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) begins in southern California at the Mexican border and travels a total distance of 2\,650 miles to the Canadian border. From Islip Saddle\, we’ll head up to the Bump. \nTHE BUMP: This is a high point high in the granite folds of Mt. Williamson which we will take on before heading down to the Mount Williamson trailhead where a car awaits our return. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 6:30 am at the meetup location on Hwy. 2 in La Canada. (BOOTS ON\, READY TO GO).\nIF MEETING THE GROUP THERE\, YOU MUST STATE SO\, OTHERWISE I WON’T BE STOPPING THERE.\nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: From the 210 Fwy\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy and drive north about a quarter mile to just past Milmada Dr. in LA CANADA\, then park alongside the road.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B012’31.7%22N+118%C2%B011’59.8%22W/@34.2088224\,-118.2021197\,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x3a7e81cac75a935a!7e2!8m2!3d34.2088179!4d-118.1999312 \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 5:45am at the Woodland Hills Meetup location.\nIF MEETING THERE\, LET ME KNOW\, OTHERWISE I WON’T BE STOPPING THERE.\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’04.0%22N+118%C2%B037’16.0%22W/@34.1677751\,-118.6216512\,228m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1677741!4d-118.6211043 \nDURATION: We’ll want to finish the hike and be back to the cars by 3:30 p.m. at the latest\, followed by lunch at The Habit Burger Grill/ Pandera Bread in La Canada. \nTERRAIN: Popular trails\, “use” trails and no trails at all which can be extremely steep at times. \nDISTANCE: 9+ miles \nELEVATION RANGE: Gain of 3000′ and a loss of 3300′ \nTHE PACE: A comfortable pace no faster than the slowest hiker. \nLEVEL: Advanced Intermediate \nMY CELL NUMBER IS: 805-538-5972 \nDOGS ALLOWED: NO
