SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 3 miles\, 700′ gain\nEasier Option: 2.4 mi\, 530′ gain. (1343 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065\, or 89 La Paz Ct\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 to save another 500′ distance). \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nThe Hike\nEasy end of the Intermediate Spectrum\, due to the 1 mile continuous incline that can get exhausting. A fit beginner can easily complete it. \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave. Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nFor those that want a little easier option start at this address: 1366 Los Amigos Ave\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. Join the group as we pass. \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks (zig-zag trail) for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. Beginners may find this climb difficult to continue at a fast pace. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute several times during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nAt the top by the cross or one of the nearby benches\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Wildwood Central Park (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:With the limited daylight we will do this shorter hike. \nWildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. \nIt will start at the trailhead that has steps down to the Moonridge Trail. We’ll take the trail down by the teepee to Wildwood Canyon Trail\, pass by Paradise Falls\, pick up Lizard Rock Trail\, and go by a water treatment plant on our way to Lizard Rock. We’ll take Stagecoach Bluff Trail for some more elevation\, and either catch Mesa Trail or Moonridge Trail back to the parking lot. We’ll pass through various trails with bridges\, crossing streams\, and have some tree canopies for approximately 5+ miles with about a 1200’ elevation gain/loss. We will take a break somewhere in our travels. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Western Plateau Mt. Elliott - Gentler Friendly - 8:30 Start
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Conejo Canyons trailhead next to the Thousand Oaks Recycling Center on Conejo Center Drive\, near the end of Rancho Conejo. We’ll walk across Rancho Conejo and take the fire road down to new bridge construction site and then we will go to Five Points. From Five Points\, we will take the Western Plateau trail up to intersection with the Outlaw Loop trail. We will take the Outlaw Loop trail to Mt Elliott and then we will take a single track trail back to the Western Plateau trail and then back to the parking lot. Note: We are not going up to the transmitter tower on this hike! \nOn this hike\, you’ll see the Conejo Airfield (honest!)\, Mt. Rex’s backside\, at least two wrecked cars\, lots of fennel\, and maybe a rattlesnake and a tarantula or two. Plus\, impressive views of the Santa Susannah Mountains (if it’s clear)\, two or three rocky canyons\, and the new biotech developments nearby. \nThe total distance of this loop hike is a smidge under 6 miles. SUMMARY:Zuma Canyon: Ocean and Canyon View trail Loop ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative hike to Peter’s hike on Thursday. It’s a bit far on PCH\, but we will meet at 9:00 AM. \nThe name “Zuma” is derived from the Chumash language and means “abundance.” There is an absolute abundance of beautiful and spectacular wildflowers engulfing the entire area and it appears that there was no impact from the Woolsey fire other than a few remnants of burnt trees. \nWe will start to hike the Zuma Loop trail and continue on to Ocean View trail. Then\, we descend down the Canyon View trail into Zuma Canyon for a bit. We will come back out of the Canyon and take a small loop around the opposite side. \nThis hike is five miles with an elevation gain/loss of approximately 800’. \nDirections:\nFrom Santa Monica\, Thousand Oaks\, and the San Fernando Valley\, drive west on Pacific Coast Highway somewhat less than a mile west of Kanan\, and turn right (north) on Bonsall Drive. Continue north into the dirt lot at the end\, where the parking is free. \nFrom Oxnard and points north and west\, you will turn left on Bonsall to the end. If you get to Kanan\, you’ve gone too far! The turn is just past the Zuma Beach parking lot. It might be easier to turn left at Busch Dr. (with the Italian restaurant on the corner) and then turn right on Rainsford Pl. and then left onto Bonsall to the end. SUMMARY:Talopop - Suitable for fit beginners
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 4.1 miles\, 720′ gain.\nEasier route: 3.9 miles\, 500′ gain. \nIs it Talepop or Talopop? Maps and signs that I have seen\, use the 2nd spelling\, but a lot of references use the other. \nWe’ll meet in front of the facilities building at the center of the park. This is a lollipop hike. \nSome of the hike is fire road\, and a lot of the hike is single-track. Some has complete exposure to the sun\, and some is through shaded wooded areas. \nWe’ll head behind the facilities building in the center and head left down the Las Virgenes Trail. After 1/3 mile\, the trail turns 90 degrees\, we continue on the easier route for 1/10th mile instead of taking the trail that climbs the hill. \nAfter\, we cross the dry creek bed on a short bridge\, then come to a fire road. \nEasier Route: For those that want the slightly easier route\, turn left. Continue for 1.2 miles\, turning right\, and continuing on this path straight for 0.3 miles to the social event. \nRegular Route: Turn right and it becomes the Talopop Trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1.8 miles until it dead ends at a fire road\, Liberty Canyon Trail. There\, we’ll wait for others to catch up\, and we can share some beverages and/or snacks before continuing. \nWe’ll turn left and after 1/3 mile\, the trail dead ends again at Las Virgenes Fire Road. We’ll turn left again and travel 1.1 miles where we’ll hit another junction\, turning right back onto Las Virgenes Trail for the final 0.4 mile return\, making a left at the split right behind the facilities building. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nCalifornia Sagebrush – Artemesia Californica\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. SUMMARY:Hill & Hawk Canyons - Western Plateau - Adventist Hill
DESCRIPTION:We began hiking and exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “Weekday Hikers.” At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting our use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nToday we will do one of my classic loops and add Adventist Hill to the mix. Trekking poles and good lug soles recommended \nHike is about 7 miles with 1500′ gain. It is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating guide. \nHere is a video from a previous hike in Hill Canyon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC9pYzkaCF0 \nHistory of Hill Canyon\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridgelines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \nDirections to trailhead \nUse Google Map and drive to address. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Gentler / Beginner: Kanan Dume to Latigo - 5 miles
DESCRIPTION:This is an easier hike for Tuesday\, another has also been posted close by\, please only sign up for one hike. This hike is 5 miles and will take us on a less-traveled but quite beautiful part of the 67-mile Backbone Trail\, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. \nThe route begins at Kanan Dume Road and goes southerly a short distance\, allowing us to cross over the southernmost tunnel (Tunnel 1) above Kanan Dume Road. We then proceed easterly roughly 2.2 miles and up 600 feet\, gradually winding our way up and through Latigo Canyon\, turning around at Latigo Canyon Road\, and returning to the cars. This hike can include a short jog up to the ridgeline for spectacular Pacific Ocean views. There will probably still be some wildflowers along this route. \nThis hike has a short but steep climb at the beginning\, where we will help and encourage beginning hikers (who still should be prepared for a 150′ climb). Poles would be a good idea when returning. \nThe terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail with occasional stretches of loose rock and gravel (you may want to bring trekking poles). The majority of our out and back hike is wooded and shaded canyon trails\, offering periodic glimpses of the Pacific. A deep “V” into a shaded cleft\, with another 450′ of descent and climb will complete the elevation loss and gain. \nThe total distance for this hike will be approximately 5 miles with 600 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Kanan Road exit and drive south (toward the ocean) 7.8 miles\, going through two of the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). Turn right into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, just before entering the third tunnel. \nFrom PCH – turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 4.4 miles from PCH\, going through one tunnel\, and then turn left into the “Backbone Trail” parking area\, almost immediately after coming out of the tunnel. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to Top of the World ~ Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled single track\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south and west. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nNOTE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our hikes. DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 1000′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasier Option – 2.7 miles\, 320′ gain \nMany have gotten lost relying on GPS. This is the Wendy Trailhead\, where S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nHeading out\, we cross a creek\, turn right at the split\, then Turn right at the dead end. We regroup at the visitor center\, where there will be bathrooms. \nWe cross the wooden bridge and go left at the asphalt path. \nAfter 1/3 mile\, those that want the easier path turn left\, go 0.4 miles and turn right at the dead end. After 500′\, wait at the bench for the rest of the group (45 – 60 min). \nThe rest will continue down for 3/4 mile. There will be a porta-potty and picnic table. We’ll regroup\, then turn right and go about 1.3 miles and another 435′ of gain before turning left and heading up about 1/2 mile. \nAt the top\, we’ll turn left for 500′ and arrive at a bench and overlook. Stems are red. Small scarlet red tubular flowers. \nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. Pronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. \nRoot can be chopped up and used as soap. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape skin off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. The protagonist’s search for a “Buddhist” context to his experiences (and those of others he encounters) recurs throughout the story.\nReleased just one year following the success of his previous novel\, On the Road\, The Dharma Bums was another success for Kerouac and became one of his most popular books. SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Valley to Hill & Hawk Canyons - Gentler 5.5 mile 700'
DESCRIPTION:This route is pretty dry. If we get a deluge\, I may consider cancelling\, but otherwise it’s a go! \nThis loop / lollipop hike starts at the parking area in Hill Canyon. We’ll cross the bridge over the creek\, and meander a mile before turning onto the Hawk Canyon Trail\, through the notch alongside the creek\, to the Edison Road\, up the hill to the Peninsula Trail\, around Canyon View\, past Volcanics and Elliott Peak trail\, back down to the creek\, and back out to the cars. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. Here’s the GaiaGPS details. \nWe’ll see lots of brown hills and meadows. On Sunday\, when I pre-hiked this route\, there were actually a few wildflowers left in bloom amidst the tumbleweeds. This will be a good opportunity to establish a “before” picture in your mind\, in hopes of a beautiful “after” the coming rains. \nI generally spray my hat and legs with bug repellent on this hike – YMMV. Also\, we may hike over a wet spot on the trail along the creek. \n5.5 miles\, 700′ elevation. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative (and probably slower) hike than Steve Johnson posted for Thursday. We will start in the parking lot of SMMNRA and can go up to the monument if it is dry\, but if it has rained\, we can just go down the asphalt to the picnic tables. If it is raining\, however\, I will cancel. We will take this hike at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up. It is an out and back\, however\, and you can go at your own pace. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up to the monument.\nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. DESCRIPTION:Come explore the East side\, where it never rains until it pours. This urban hike is 5 miles and winds through stairs\, streets\, sidewalks\, and dirt paths over three Silver Lake hills. It includes two separate loops that each start and end at Silver Lake Meadows. The hike covers a range of local topics including the history of water\, infrastructure\, protected habitat\, mid-century modern architecture\, movie studios\, immigration and LGBTQ history. We will also describe the Sierra Club Wilderness Travel Course. Learn more about the class during this hike! Class starts in January 2024 – register now before the class fills up. The hike starts at the Silver Lake Meadows\, just across the street from the Neutra VDL House at 2300 Silver Lake Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90039. There is free street parking along Silver Lake Boulevard across from the reservoir and on Armstrong Avenue\, off of Silver Lake Blvd. The best option is to find parking on the east side of Silver Lake Boulevard before you reach 2300 Silver Lake Boulevard. Cross at the cross walk with a traffic light in front of the VDL House.\nThere are no restrooms at Silver Lake Meadows. DESCRIPTION:Come and join your COSCA and COSF friends to fix up some of Conejo Valley’s most popular trails in Wildwood Park! \nThe work will be on the Stagecoach Bluff Trail in Wildwood Regional Park\, fixing ruts. Monthly work days are organized by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA)\, with support from COSF. \nMeet at the main Wildwood Parking area at the corner of Avenida De Los Arboles and Big Sky Drive. You should arrive a few minutes early to take care of registration details. \nIn order to participate\, you will need to sign up online. The work will be done under the guidance of COSCA rangers. \nAs always\, prepare and dress appropriately for trail work. \n\nWear solid boots with good lug soles to keep your grip on a possibly slippery trail. Absolutely no sandals or flip-flops!\nBring lots of water! It can be hot and there may not be any shade\nBring a hat\, work gloves and sunglasses or other eye protection\nLong-sleeved shirts and long pants are strongly recommended\nUse sunblock on exposed skin\nLeave your 4-legged friends at home\n\nNo experience is necessary. DESCRIPTION:Overnight trip up Rockhouse Canyon\nDid this last year and found the spring! Hike up Rockhouse Canyon to a wonderful campsite among the cottonwoods. \nDescription from Afoot and Afield:\nRockhouse Canyon and the broad\, sloping alluvial basin drained by it-informally known as Rockhouse Valley -constitute one of Southern California’s truly forgotten places. Prior to the 20th century\, Cahuilla Indian villages thrived here. After the Cahuilla moved to the nearby Santa Rosa Indian Reservation around 1900\, a few hardy prospectors made forays into the area\, traveling along the ancient footpaths and\, in some cases\, living in the old rock houses built by the Cahuilla. Today\, there is\nstill no road beyond the lower reaches of Rockhouse Canyon. The closest inhabited place is several miles away. \nTrack from last year\nSpring location\nI plan on camping somewhere in Clark Valley on Friday night. Then on Saturday morning we can caravan to the trailhead. The road to the trailhead is rough\, last year a Subaru Outback was able to get 2.5 miles from the end of the road and my Lexus GX was able to get to 1.5 miles. I don’t know what the condition of the road is this year. SUMMARY:Spahn Ranch - Stagecoach Rd - Corriganville - Rock House - El Camino Nuevo Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our hike will be steeped in local history and lore. We’ll begin our trek at the top of the Old Stagecoach Rd and venture west through Twilight Canyon to Corriganville. After a little site-seeing and a loop around Corriganville we’ll head up a hill to the 118 and cross under it using the wildlife corridor. From there we’ll take a seldom-used trail to the fork at the Hummingbird Trail and Rocky Peak Trails. We’ll visit the Rock House and have our snack break. \nWe’ll continue the loop by heading down Rocky Peak Rd and catch the El Camino Nuevo which will bring us to the Spahn Ranch. And then its back to The Old Stagecoach Rd \nEnjoy the history lessons below 🙂 \nThe Spahn Ranch \nThe ranch took its name from dairy farmer George Spahn\, who purchased the property in 1948. Many western-themed movies and television shows were filmed on the ranch\, including Duel in the Sun (1946) and television episodes of Bonanza\, The Lone Ranger\, and Zorro. It was also the filming location for the B-movie The Creeping Terror. \nThe Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers\, the “Manson Family\,” for much of 1968 and 1969. Spahn was 80 years old and living at the ranch when he allowed The Manson Family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Manson#Manson_Family) to move in\, rent-free\, in exchange for labor. \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/8/2/f/600_456802575.jpeg \nA wildfire destroyed all of the Spahn Movie Ranch’s film sets and residential structures on September 26\, 1970. George Spahn died on September 22\, 1974\, and is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in nearby Newhall\, California. \nThe Rock House \nThe rock house is a small room under a rock overhang. It was built as part of a movie set. Across the trail from the rock house is a natural cave above the road. Rumor has it that an entire family lived there at one time. From 1937 to 1965 Corriganville Movie Ranch\, owned by stuntman Ray “Crash” Corrigan\, was a working film studio and movie ranch for outdoor location shooting. In 1949\, it opened to the public on weekends and holidays. \nIn 1965 Ray Corrigan sold the property to Bob Hope. A housing subdivision called Hopetown was developed and built on a parcel near the park entrance. In the late 1960s and early 1970s part of the site was used for motorcycle racing. In 1970 the ranch was swept by fire. It provided an inland route between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara that was shorter than the coastal route. The first overland stagecoach to use the pass made its run between San Francisco and Los Angeles on April 6\, 1861. We’ll be starting and ending our loop hike at the top of the Devils Slide segment and hiking along the Twilight Canyon section \nDescending into Twilight Canyon \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/4/c/8/highres_19966280.jpeg \nEl Camino Nuevo \nMore appropriately known as the Chatsworth Grade Road it replaced the stagecoach route in 1895 and provided an easier and smoother route to transport goods. It was also able to accommodate motorized vehicles. We’ll be hiking along this old grade which was replaced by our familiar Old Santa Susana Pass in 1917. \nThe Santa Susana Wildlife Corridor \nThis wildlife corridor under the 118 helps provide a vital linkage between the Santa Susana Mountains and the Santa Monica Mountains. SUMMARY:Hidden Gem—Short Hike to a Secluded Mountain Lake in the Heart of Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Discover a slice of wilderness right in the heart of LA\, just minutes from downtown Beverly Hills. You don’t need to travel hours to get to the great outdoors—there are beautiful canyon trails right in your backyard! \nIt doesn’t get more centrally located than this…literally the geographic center of Los Angeles (according to the former USGS employee who commemorated the precise location with a hidden plaque that we will be locating and visiting)\, this moderate\, 2.5 mile round trip trail hike and lush nature walk through the chaparral\, grasslands\, and oak woodlands of the Santa Monica Mountains (and a few redwoods to boot!) is sure to inspire with its hidden gems: the Upper Franklin Canyon Reservoir—a three acre lake that was used as the shooting location of the Andy Griffith Show opening credits\, a duck and turtle pond surrounded by proudly standing pampas grass (together serving as the permanent and seasonal home for birds in the Pacific Flyway)\, and atop the ridge on Mulholland Drive at its highest elevation\, spectacular sweeping views of both Santa Monica Bay to the south and the San Bernardino Mountains to the north. \nThis hike is offered by the Sierra Club. While on this hike you will hear about the Wilderness Travel Course starting in January. This 10-week class covers the skills and gear needed to safely enjoy and explore the outdoors. SUMMARY:Hike with Beach Party and Fire - Big Fall Event!
DESCRIPTION:2.7 miles\, 650′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate. \nA hike\, then a potluck party on the beach with a fire.\nCome for the hike\, the beach party\, or both!\nTemps likely to be 70’sF during the day\, 60-70F after 5p. \nNote: GPS has taken people to the incorrect location. Please read the written directions. \nPlease post in the comments if you will bring a fire wood bundle as your pot luck item. \nFirewood (no construction wood please):\n{ to be filled as people volunteer } \nThe Hike. 2 – 3:30p.\nThis hike is on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners are welcome\, but if it gets too hard\, they can always turn around and go back the way we came. Nearly all of the elevation gain is in the first half. \nThis is a social hike. The event host will be moving slowly and stopping at various points to let people catch up. Those that wish to move ahead at a faster pace\, are welcome to do so if they know the route\, but are on their own regarding navigation. \nMeet at the Sycamore Canyon Trail head inside of Sycamore Canyon Campground\, across from Sycamore Cove beach. \nFrom the trailhead\, we head up a mostly flat trail for about a 1/2 mile. Left onto the Overlook Trail\, climbing 400′ over the next mile. It ends\, and we turn left. We follow the ridge for about 1/2 mile\, with about 200′ of loss and 100′ of gain. \nFor return\, we follow our tracks back to the scenic trail\, turn right\, and follow it down for 3/4 mile\, again reaching Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, and turning right back to our starting point. \nThe Beach Party. 4 – 9:30p. Cars have to be gone by 10p.\nWe’ll go back to our cars and gather up our things for the beach party. From the trail head\, it’s about 1/4 mile to the camp ground parking lot\, then another 1/4 mile to the beach party area across the road at Sycamore Cove Beach. There are picnic tables and fire pits\, but we must supply our own wood to burn. There is wood for sale at the camp ground across the street. \nIf your pot luck item requires utensils\, please bring them. \nThe fire pits on the beach are first come\, first serve. We have members that will arrive early in the morning to secure our spot. \nPlease bring something warm to put on. It can get cool and windy near the beach as the sun drops. Beach lot $12\, $11 62+ (you need your license plate #\, pay “Iron Ranger” machine upon entry). \nAlternate parking along the west end of PCH unil 10p\, but you may have to walk 1/4 mile or so. \nParking space is limited\, so please car-pool or arrive early in case you have parking issues. The beach lot closes at sunset and rangers announce this to beach goers\, giving plenty of time to move your cars. What you paid for the beach lot also covers the campground lot parking cost\, across the street\, if room\, else 1/4 mile down the street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots.
