SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon - The Shadiest Section of The Backbone Trail
DESCRIPTION:Another spectacular section of the Backbone Trail…this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock formations known as the Sespe Formation\, Hondo canyon’s pink “V” gourge\, beautifully shaded live oak\, streams and a sloping green meadow. Its perhaps one of the shadiest sections of the Backbone Trail. At the top we will see many fossils in the sandstone. \nThe hike is OaB and can be adjusted according to weather conditions. Lots of shade along this one (plus some clouds are predicted in Topanga as of this writing)\, but bring plenty of water; I recommend 2 quarts. \nHISTORY\nI’ll show you a bay tree woodland in Hondo Canyon that was the home of Paul C. Bragg. Bragg was a pioneer in the health food movement in California. He had a chain of health food stores and popular radio shows in the 30s and 40s. He was the inspiration and teacher for later healthy living teachers like Jack LaLanne. His abandoned vacation cabin was here until the early 1990s\, but was burned in the 1993 fire. There are still some artifacts. \nHike will be 6-8 miles depending on weather/group and is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the Hike Rating guide https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDIRECTIONS: \nMeet at backbone trailhead on south side of Old Topanga Road\, 1/4 mile west of Topanga Canyon. Park on south side of street \nClose-by parking is limited — be early!

SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) from Down Under ~ Heat-Modified
DESCRIPTION:We will start this hike into MCSP from Tapia Park. The Tapia Park entrance is just before the Piuma intersection. Note: a day use fee (machine at entrance) is required if you don’t have a State Park Pass. After you enter Tapia\, drive to the picnic area and take a hard left onto Dorothy Lane. Follow the signs to Salvation Army Camp & Conference Center. It’s about 0.4 mile to the Salvation Army Camp entrance. Park on the right side of the road (lined pull-in parking stalls). \nOur hike starts on the Tapia Spur Trail\, which winds through a lovely chaparral “forest” and drops down onto the road by the park’s group campground. We’ll take the first in a series of side-trips to explore the Ann Skager trail that loops through a deeply shaded riparian/oak woodland. From there we will make our way to Crags Road. Crags Road runs along and above Malibu Creek. The water level has dropped enough to allow us to cross over the creek to Mott’s Road\, which leads to the MCSP Visitor’s Center. From there we’ll cross the “big” bridge to the famous Rock Pool\, our turnaround point. On the way back\, we’ll loop up and over the Grassland Trail to take in the sweeping views of MCSP’s central valley. \nThis out-and-back hike\, plus those side trips (Ann Skager\, Rock Pool\, Grassland Trail)\, clocks in at around 5.5 miles\, with an elevation gain/loss of about 650‘. I have timed this hike at 2 1/2 hours to allow a leisurely pace in anticipation of warmer weather. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Las Virgenes Rd.\, south for 4.8 miles to the Tapia Park entrance (south of main MCSP entrance). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nProof of vaccination required.\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:EBIKE RIDE PAVED ROADS - CRYSTAL LAKE & HWY 39
DESCRIPTION:I’ve been wanting to travel on the upper end of Hwy 39 for years now\, hoping that it would eventually be reopened. To get to the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains\, I used to head up Hwy 39 out of Azusa to The Angeles Crest Hwy 2 at Islip Saddle. It’s been closed for 40 years now and I guess it’ll never be reopened\, so I will just have to do it on my ebike which will allow me to accomplish what I used to do in my thirties with my car.\nWe’ll meet in Crystal lake and take on Hwy 39 before coming back and checking all the roads in the campgrounds there. \nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 9:00am at the Crystal Lake Cafe \nPARKING FEE: Adventure Pass required \nROUTE: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/ebike-paved-crystal-lake-and-hwy-39-to-hwy-2-d35a296 \nDISTANCE: 22 miles. \nELEVATION GAIN: 3700′ – A lot of this elevation gain is in the Crystal Lake area itself and can easily be cut down if it proves to be too much. \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest biker in the group \nDURATION: 4+ hours including lunch at the Crystal Lake Cafe \nLEVEL: Advanced Beginner Ebiker or very strong mountain biker \nTERRAIN: Paved roads \nRESTROOMS: At the start\, middle and end of ride \nDEBRIEFING: At the Crystal Lake Cafe \nMY CELL # IS: 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:Wendy Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 1000′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasier Option – 2.7 miles\, 320′ gain \nMany have gotten lost relying on GPS. This is the Wendy Trailhead\, where S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nHeading out\, we cross a creek\, turn right at the split\, then Turn right at the dead end. We regroup at the visitor center\, where there will be bathrooms. \nWe cross the wooden bridge and go left at the asphalt path. \nAfter 1/3 mile\, those that want the easier path turn left\, go 0.4 miles and turn right at the dead end. After 500′\, wait at the bench for the rest of the group (45 – 60 min). \nThe rest will continue down for 3/4 mile. There will be a porta-potty and picnic table. We’ll regroup\, then turn right and go about 1.3 miles and another 435′ of gain before turning left and heading up about 1/2 mile. \nAt the top\, we’ll turn left for 500′ and arrive at a bench and overlook. We’ll share snacks and beverages for 30-60 minutes\, then head down 500′\, turn right at the junction\, and return to our cars. \nIf you wish to return before the social event completes\, study the map so you can find your way back. \nThe Route\nHike Distance: 4.6 mi / 2.7 mi\nGain: 1000′ / 320′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the middle of this hike.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit beginner\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: We pass a “no dogs” sign.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street.\nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually an arrow made of baking soda or sticks. \nGroup separation: Hikers moving significantly ahead or not waiting at designated stopping points are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you will see on this hike: \nHeartleaf Penstemon\nLeaves are shiny and saw toothed\, shaped like hearts\, 2 to 6 centimeters long and arranged oppositely on the branches. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. Pronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. \nRoot can be chopped up and used as soap. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape skin off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon:Backbone Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/hondo-canyon-backbone-trail \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nThis is a great trail for warmer weather as it has a lot of shaded areas. This trail has several canopy trees that cover the area. Will also have open field areas as well that are not shaded so we are starting the hike a little earlier. A side note will also experience some overgrown sections and some poison oak. Some people call this trail “The Tropical Forest” So should be quite pretty. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 6:45 am) I have attached the AllTrails link for stats\, directions and photos.. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/hondo-canyon-backbone-trail \nTrail out and back\nMiles 6.8\nRated moderate\nElevation Gain 1630 ft\nDogs not allowed on this trail\nParking Road side \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:\n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are of your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limit. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. We offer all levels of hikes from moderate to hard to advanced only. We encourage everyone to not give up work on your core by joining our easier moderate Events and then joining our harder hikes once you are ready. 😊

SUMMARY:Escape the Heat this weekend - Mt. Pinos\, Sawmill Peak (and maybe Grouse Peak)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday July 22\, 2023 \nMeetup Time : 7:45 A.M. (8:00 am SHARP hiking start) \nIt is predicted to be 100 F + in SCV this weekend. Escape with us to the cooler mountains nearby where we can enjoy the mid/high 70’s at 8\,000′. \nHEAT ALERT: Due to the current heat wave\, I will provide a followup weather/temperature forecast by Thursday before event. \nDISTANCE: 7 miles or 10.5 miles total (see Description) – out and back style. \nGAIN: 1100′ or 1900′ total (see Description) \nRATED: Not for beginners. This one is Moderate / Moderate +\, mainly for thin air (low oxygen) impact and a few steeper stretches. \nHIKE DURATION: About 4-1/2 hours (including a 20 minute snack break) \nDESCRIPTION:\nThis 7 mile hike (3.5 miles each way) from the 8340 ft. trail head takes you to 2 summits (first Mount Pinos 8831 ft. and then Sawmill Mountain 8818 ft). Moderate hikers should be easily able to complete all three summits.\nExtra credit: 3 extra miles to the final Peak at Grouse 8\,573 ft and back.\nOnce we get to Sawmill\, depending on the group make up/temperature/weather\, etc. we will collectively decide\, but most probably we will continue on to Grouse\, yet another Peak. If we do\, it would be almost 10.5 and 1200′ gain total for the hike.\nBear in mind\, this entire “out and back” trail is very well marked/ easy to follow\, so you can safely turn around at ANY stage\, depending on your ability/ stamina. Also\, we will have signposted the route with our popular orange chalk arrows to help you 🙂 \nMount Pinos is the highest point in Ventura County and lies on the edge of the Chumash Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest. Mount Pinos\, created over 100 million years ago was known as Iwihinmu to the indigenous Chumash people. The slopes are a mix of sub-alpine\, white fir\, and Jeffrey Pine habitats. The views from Mount Pinos are beautiful\, especially if air is clear (San Joaquin Valley to the North\, Tehachapi to the East\, and the Carrizo Plain and Temblor Mountains to the Northwest).\nHopefully\, there should still be plenty of wildflower action at this cooler altitude. \nBRING:\nStrong shoes\, dress in layers (expecting 75 F at start). Poles are useful\, if you have them; snack lunch; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1 liter electrolytes\, i.e. Gatorade)\, and your camera. \nADVENTURE PASS:\nNot required in Summer. See bathroom note below. \nMEET : (Google Coordinates 34.8135\, -119.1263)\nYour leader at the Mt Pinos / Nordic Hut trailhead parking at 8:00 AM; we will depart up the trail to Mt Pinos at 8:00 AM SHARP.\nAllow 1-1/4 hours to get to trailhead from Santa Clarita. \nDIRECTIONS: From Santa Clarita Valley: Take I-5 North ~ 40 miles to the Frazier Park off ramp. Exit\, turn left under highway. Go West on the Frazier Park Road for about 12 miles passing Lockhart Valley Road (on the left) until you see signs for Mt. Pinos. Stay to the left at the main fork (do not go to Pine Mountain Club). Follow the road ahead\, twisting and turning 9 miles up the mountain to the Nordic Hut parking area\, at the end of the road. Park on the left side\, by the Mt Pinos trailhead\, and look for the group there. \nNOTE: There may (or may not) be operational Porta Potty toilets at trailhead or campground nearby. We recommend a quick stop as you exit the 5 Fwy at the Truck stop / gas station on the left\, before heading toward Frazier Park. \nDRIVING: If you wish to arrange a carpool with friends – Towsley Canyon/ Rivendale Park (Google coordinates 34.35815928\, -118.55535859) is a good meeting spot (24335 The Old Rd\, Newhall\, CA 91321 ) off I-5. \nLeader: Gary S

There will be several tables. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. We’ll share snacks and drinks for 60 – 90 minutes\, before heading back the way we came. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nDuration: 4.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots.\nFlashlight or headlamp (if it will be dark during any part of the event).\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. SUMMARY:💦Sleeper Canyon to the Rock Pool - Swimming OK
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Pool is one of the most popular landmarks in Malibu Creek State Park. It has been the site of many movies and TV shows including Planet of the Apes\, Swiss Family Robinson series\, Tarzan movies and Dr Quinn Medicine Woman. \n🧺 🤽Bring a sack lunch — we’ll have an extended break by the Pool. In addition to the Rock Pool we’ll also have an opportunity to cool our toes at a Malibu Creek crossing. \nSOME HIGHLIGHTS ALONG THE WAY \nThe Mott Adobe – a vacation home built around 1925 by Los Angeles lawyer and member of Crags Country Club Johnny Mott on Mott Road just off Crags Road. Herbert Hoover once slept there \nThe structure is a Spanish Colonial Revival style adobe block structure with a two-door garage\, featuring local bricks\, wooden doors and beams\, and wrought iron fixtures. Only portions of the building are still standing. \nThe Visitor Center – The center was built in the Colonial Revival architectural style in the 1920s by Willis P. Hunt as a vacation home. Within you will find maps\, books\, souvenirs\, even refreshments for sale and nature exhibits. \nCampgrounds – We will also be traveling by a year-round campground that boasts 63 sites. \n👉This leisurely 7-mile hike with appx 1\,000 ft total ascent is rated MEDIUM. See the Hike Rating Guide \nDirections to Trailhead \nAs of this writing we will park in the Tapia Park day use area. Fee is $12/car. There may be free parking (at your own risk) across the street on the southeast corner of Piuma and Malibu Canyon Rd . If you park in free spot use the the Backbone Trail where it crosses under Malibu Canyon and into Tapia Park – or just cross the road. \nNote: I may change meetup venue….check back often for final selection. Normally I would park at the Backbone Trailhead on Malibu Canyon but we may not be able to cross the creek into Sleeper Canyon\, so we go around the Tapia way. I’ll try to find some time to scout it out before hike.

SUMMARY:Small But Mighty: Bats of Irvine Park - Must Register on Letsgooutside.org
DESCRIPTION:Note: The event starts at 7:30\, but you want to get there early to get to the Nature Center\, park\, etc. so I put 7:10. \n**You must also register here: https://letsgooutside.org/activities/2023/07/23/small-but-mighty-bats-of-irvine-park-4/ \nMap: Nature Center – Irvine Regional Park\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/wBLXnRyaqAaBoGuc7 \nAfter the sun has set\, the night sky fills with small but mighty flying bats. Enjoy an evening discovering how important bats are to our ecosystems and how they help us stay bug-bite free! The program begins with an informal introduction to bats at your own leisure. Then\, breaking into groups\, we will walk around the lake and park to search for these nighttime flyers as they race around catching their dinner. Bat detectors will help to identify and hear their high frequency calls. \nDress warmly in layers as we stroll about a half mile around the lake. Program is free though there is a Park Entrance Fee per entry vehicle. For questions\, please contact Resource Specialist\, Kelley.Brugmann@ocparks.com at 714-973-6625.

SUMMARY:Carpinteria Bluffs Trail & Nature Preserve - Gentler Intermediate

Yes\, it was cool as it was 67F when I was left there around 11am. \nThis beautiful\, beachside green space is one of the last undeveloped strips of land in Carpinteria that go along the ocean and offers outdoor recreational activities like hiking\, walking\, or biking on dirt trails and/or sand and more. \nCarpinteria Bluffs is also a popular viewing area for Pacific Harbor seals that often lounge on the beach. Occasionally visitors can even spot migrating grey whales and dolphins.\nhttps://californiawanderland.com/carpinteria-bluffs-tar-pits-park/ \nThis is a 4-5 mile hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 300-400’. \nDirection: Take the 101 Freeway to exit 85 for Bailard Avenue. At the end of the offramp\, turn left toward the coast on Bailard Avenue. Drive straight across the intersection of Carpinteria Avenue into a dirt parking area in Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.
Restrictions apply for your safety and ours:
• Don’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.
• Plan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.
• No “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.
DISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY
The hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Intermediate 8-9 miles Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll turn back around the Guadalasca Trail intersection. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1500’ gain on this 8-9 mile adventure. IF it gets too hot we will have the option to shorten the hike. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. It is mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Point Dume to Paradise Cove - and back! Gentler
DESCRIPTION:This is a cooler\, gentler hike along the surf during a hot\, hot week! \nThe Point Dume staircase has been restored and improved\, so we’ll park at Westward\, climb up and over the bluff to the top of the stairs\, make our way gingerly around the cliff\, then down the stairs to the beach. On Thursday\, the tides will be in our favor\, so we’ll scamper along the beach to Paradise Cove\, where those of us who choose to\, will indulge in a delicious (but expensive) brunch. For those of us on a stricter budget\, bring a sandwich and a drink (but plan on hiking your trash back out) to have just down the beach. \nWe will absolutely *not* point out Barbra Streisand’s home on the cliff above the beach at the end of Zumirez Drive. \nThe Westward beach has somewhat expensive parking\, but we’ll arrive early\, when prices are lower. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There beach is exposed\, with no shade. \nNote: We will meet at the far eastern end of the Westward lot (film crews notwithstanding). Do NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon - Hawk Lollipop - Easy Intermediate\, beginner option
DESCRIPTION:5.3 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate\n2.5 miles\, 100′ gain\, Beginner \nWe start by crossing a bridge into a wooded area and continue down a relatively flat path alongside a stream. After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages for about 60 minutes. \nEasier Option.\nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, pass the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. That same picnic table will be on the right. \nFor the return\, we continue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. \nHike Distance: 5.3 miles\, Beginner option is 2.5 miles.\nGain: 600′\, Beginner option is 100′.\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate/Easier option is beginner.\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: The first mile is mostly flat.\nAll of the trail is well groomed and not rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at trailhead\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in lot next to trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. Click the link to see it. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nRed Brome\nGrass like with thorny appearing tops. A sub-species of foxtail chess. Can lead to flash fires. Winter fires don’t kill the seeds. \nDirections: \nHill Canyon Trailhead\n10241 Hill Canyon Road (address is before trailhead\, continue to gravel lot on left)\nSanta Rosa Valley\, CA 93012\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.226495\, -118.930374 \nFrom CA-118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23 south.\nExit 19 Tierra Rejada Rd.\, turn right (west) for 0.5 miles\nLeft (south) on Moorpark Rd. for 1.4 miles.\nRight on Santa Rosa Rd. for 3.7 miles.\nLeft on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-101 (from Camarillo and farther west):\nExit Santa Rosa Rd. north for 4.9 miles.\nTurn right (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-23 and CA-101 (from Thousand Oaks):\nNorth on CA-12 for 3.1 miles.\nExit 16 Sunset Hills Blvd. and left (west) for 0.9 miles.\nLeft (west) on E. Olsen Rd. for 0.8 miles.\nRight (north) on N. Moorpark Rd. for 1.9 miles.\nContinue on Santa Rosa Rd. west for 3.7 miles.\nTurn left (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nParking can be very tight because it is also popular with bicyclists. Car pooling suggested\, because it would be sad for someone to not be able to hike because there isn’t any place to park. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Backbone Trail to Sandstone Peak and Mishe Mokwa Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/backbone-trail-to-sandstone-peak-and-mishe-mokwa-trail-loop?u=i&sh=aoxfvb \nHey Everyone\, \nI am taking over for a couple weeks. It should be cooling down by the time this hike is scheduled. I might move up the start time if the heatwave decides to stick around a little longer since these trails have little to no shade. We will be going clockwise to get most of the incline out of the way in the beginning. Once we get to the top of Sandstone Peak\, we will stop for some photos before making our way down and around the loop. There were some reports of biting bugs and overgrown parts of the trail. There are also a few water crossings on the map. Where there’s water\, there’s probably poison oak. Bug spray and long pants are recommended. I have attached the AllTrails link for stats\, directions\, and photos. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/backbone-trail-to-sandstone-peak-and-mishe-mokwa-trail-loop?u=i&sh=aoxfvb \nLoop\nMiles 5.9\nRated moderate\nElevation Gain 1340 ft\nDogs on leash are allowed on this trail\, however I do not recommend it due to the heat\nTwo dirt lots and some roadside parking \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike\, so please know if you feel you cannot finish for any reason please turn back early. \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds\, or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled. \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:\n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (water\, hat\, sunglasses\, hiking boot/hiking shoes\, poles\, snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last…. The Organizer\, Co-Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limits. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control\, and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike may be too much for your ability. 😊

SUMMARY:Sullivan - Mandeville Loop
DESCRIPTION:The shady hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek. Alive with the singing of birds\, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore\, oak\, and willow trees. We’ll be hiking on both the Sullivan side and the Mandeville Canyon side of the ridge dividing the two canyons creating a loop. \nThe hike will include a short but steep ascent and an equally steep descent on Mandeville Ridge — trekking poles are recommended. I don’t expect any bushwhacking. \nHike is 7 miles and rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections\nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, 2.3 miles west of the 405\, turn north onto Mandeville Canyon Road. After a third of a mile\, turn left onto Westridge Road. Drive up Westridge Road for 1.2 miles and turn left on Bayliss Road. Drive two blocks and make another left on Queensferry Road and find a place to legally park. \nThere is not much parking on Queensferry so be prepared to park on Bayliss \nWe’ll meet at the big green gate at end of Queensferry Rd

SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Green Peak - a Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:THIS HIKE REPLACES THE SULLIVAN CANYON HIKE \nOur route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fireroad and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over and up to Green Peak \nHike is 4.5 miles with 1\,000 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM+ due to terrain. See the HWD Hike Rating Guide \nDirections: \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, turn north on Palisades Drive and continue for 2.9 mi until you get to Palisades Ct. Turn left here then left again on Michael Ln. Trailhead is 0.2 mi on right — across the street form given address. Park on Michael Lane.

SUMMARY:Hike at Caspers Wilderness Park - Bell Canyon + Oso Trail
DESCRIPTION:Let’s start early and beat the heat! \nThe hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. It is a nice and remote hike\, so you are really out there in the wilderness. \nIf you have any questions regarding the park or the trails we will be on\, please let me know! \nHere is a link to the park map: http://ocparks.com/civicax/filebank/blobdload.aspx?BlobID=8164 \nThe address is: 33401 Ortega Hwy. San Juan Capistrano\, CA 92675 \nDogs are not allowed at this park. \nParking is $5\, unless you have an OC Parks Annual Permit. If you hike a lot\, it’s totally worth it: http://ocparks.com/about/fees/pass You can buy the pass at the park.

SUMMARY:Almost-Full-Moon hike Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the gorgeous sunset and the almost full moon\, and fun loaded potluck picnic at the beautiful Angel Vista! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Hidden Lollipop - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate\, 5 mi\, 1200′ gain\nThe address is a nearby address that may cause your GPS to drive past the trailhead. It is not the address of the hike. \nThis variation is called Hidden Lollipop. Hidden because it includes a hike down the Hidden Canyon trail\, Lollipop because of the shape of the route. \nFrom the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot\, we head up Long Canyon Trail to a bench. We’ll regroup\, then head down about 1000′ to the 5-points junction. We’ll make the second right and head up a 500′ incline. We’ll regroup\, then go down the Hidden Canyon Trail\, which becomes the Meadow Vista Trail. \nWe reach a junction at the Albertson Motorway\, turn right\, and follow it as it becomes the Albertson Fire Road. When we hit the fork\, we’ll stop and have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nWe’ll then make a right\, heading up the Lang Ranch Ridge Trail until returning to the 5-points junction\, left for 500 steps to the bench\, and then right to head back to the parking lot. \nInteresting Notes\nThese are plants you will probably see on the hike: \nTurkey Mullein\nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats\nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. \nHike\nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 1200\nDistribution: Two extended inclines and a couple shorter but steeper inclines.\nDifficulty: Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations:\nThere are a couple extended inclines of 1000 steps or more as the route progresses.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nThis description includes a picture of the route. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation\nThose moving significantly ahead or not waiting at designated stopping points are on their own regarding route and navigation. It is advisable not to follow\, as a different route might be taken. \nSafety\nSince it’s common to not have a cell phone signal\, the host and at least 1 other person will be carrying a GMRS two-way radio. You can purchase one for about $25 and bring it if you want added safety. Message the host for the channel and privacy code. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101:\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27:\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130\nAddress of a nearby house: 572 Bannister Way\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. \nArrive early\, because sometimes the parking lot gets full. If this happens\, you may need another 15 minutes to carpool from a nearby parking lot. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability
