SUMMARY:Santa Barbara Beach Walk
DESCRIPTION:Our first stop\, meet me at 9:45AM just outside the Santa Barbara Museum Sea Center\n211 Stearn’s Wharf\, Santa Barbara \nDrive onto Stearn’s Wharf\, and the Sea Center is to your left. Public parking on Stearns Wharf is free for the first 90 minutes with ticket validation. Admission is $13/adult. ($11/senior) \nOur second stop\,​meet me at NOON at the park benches by the stream at Arroyo Burro Beach next to the Boathouse 2981 Cliff Drive\, Santa Barbara For a pretty drive without freeway\, you may follow me 4.3 miles from Stearns Wharf\, left along Shoreline Drive to Cliff Drive\, to the beach. \nAfter a briefing about the geology and geography of what you’ll see\, (and a bathroom stop)\, we will walk uphill on a well-worn trail up onto the mesa\, along a cliff\, (awesome views) and down 241 steps onto the beach – a total of about 2.5 miles RT. \nExertion level is mild to moderate and not wheelchair accessible. \nENJOY THE TIDEPOOLS! \nEnjoying the beach may best be done with a willingness to walk barefoot into the water\, looking at tide pools\, picking up rocks\, and not freaking out about natural oil spots on the bottoms of your feet or shoes. This is a natural phenomenon in this part of our California coast. Vaseline helps remove oil from skin. Bring any trash out with you. Bring a bag to carry shoes back\, in case you wish to go barefoot on the beach. You will be finished by 2 or 3pm. \nTHEN you can go out to lunch and enjoy Santa Barbara at a leisurely pace. Sunset will be 5:26pm.

SUMMARY:Piedra Blanca Trailhead to Pine Mountain Lodge Campground - All Day Event
DESCRIPTION:Distance : 12.2 miles out and back \nElevation Gain : about 2\,800 ft. \nDifficulty: Strenuous due to distance \nTotal Hike Time : 6 hours \nThe iconic rock formations of the Piedra Blanca stretch approximately one mile east to west. As we pass through these massive sandstone giants you will see many hidden rock caves. The entire valley is blanketed in manzanita\, sage\, and other native chaparral\, along with a few lone stands of pine trees. We will follow the Sespe Creek and it’s tributaries all the way up the valley. We will pass through the white rocks from which this area gets its name. After that we will pass through Piedra Blanca Campground and finally take a well deserved break at Pine Mountain Lodge Campground before we turn around and head back down the mountain. During this hike we will traverse 7 different water crossings. \nHiking boots and walking sticks recommended. \nDress warmly in layers. Overnight temps have been below freezing but daytime temps have been in the the mid 80’s. \nBring a lunch and plenty of water. This is a long strenuous hike and proper nutrition and hydration will be essential. \nSunscreen and sunglasses also recommended. This is a very exposed trail.

SUMMARY:Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads - A Lollipop Hike
DESCRIPTION:Our destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \nCalabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \nWe’ll begin at the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail (aka Secret Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. \nWe’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail \nOptional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures \nHike is 4.7 miles with about 1\,200 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. Turn Left on Mulholland and continue 5.7 miles to a small parking area on the right. or…. \nFrom 101 Ventura Fwy in the Valley: take Valley Circle/Mulholland Dr exit south\, turn right on Valmar Rd (becomes Old Topanga Cyn Rd) then right on Mulholland Hwy 2.1 miles to the parking area on the left. \nFrom PCH take Topanga Canyon and turn left up Old Topanga. Take a left at Mulholland Hwy for a couple miles and then turn left onto turnout. SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate\nNote that we start from the Andora trailhead. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that\, according to others\, were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. There\, we’ll have a social event lasting 30-90 minutes\, sharing snacks and beverages. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and there are many different ways of returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages for about 60 minutes. \nEasier Option.\nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, pass the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. There are 400 flights of condors over this area every day. They love the shiny glass…they eat it and the feed glass to their chicks. Both can die from ingesting the glass. Needless to say\, as this stuff is not digestable\, this can kill them. \nIt is Easy work….bring a heavy plastic bag (like a grocery bag) to put the glass in. Wear garden gloves. Bring a low to the ground chair to sit in while you pick up the glass. SUMMARY:Valentine's Day Hike: Tapo Canyon Tar Pits - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.4 miles\, 1050′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nThis hike is one of the most beautiful hikes in Simi Valley. There are 3 extended inclines\, about 1000 steps each\, on fire road. They are not especially steep\, but they do continue for some time\, which is why it is rated “Easy Intermediate.” There are also several small hills of 100 steps or less. \nThe extended inclines will get the blood pumping during this lollipop hike. We’ll be moving through the famous Tapo Canyon and visiting natural tar pits that bubble up from the ground. \nThe first pit is really a puddle that looks like someone spilled a couple 55-gallon drums of tar that was later contained using a spill rope. The next two are a little larger\, again\, contained by spill ropes to keep the sticky black tar from getting on the trail. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll start on a leisurely stroll for about 0.6 miles\, followed by a steady climb for the next mile\, completing the first extended incline. \nWe’ll turn left at the junction\, climb a small hill of a couple hundred steps\, and then head down for 1.5 miles. \nWe’ll make a right turn down a smaller trail and go for about 100 yards until we reach the tar pits. After looking around for a bit\, we’ll head back\, and after 0.25 miles\, we’ll come to another junction where we will stop and share snacks and beverages. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn left and there will be a steady climb for about 3/4 of a mile to another junction. We’ll turn left again and return down for about 1.4 miles to complete the lollipop. \nEasy option: 3 miles\, 300′ gain.\nPark at 5079 Westwood St\, Simi Valley\, CA 93063. Follow Cottonwood Dr/Yosemite Ave south (down) 1000′ to the trailhead. Enter and turn immediately left. After 350′\, there is a split. It doesn’t matter which you take. The right (upper) is single-track\, the left (lower) is fire road. After ½ mile\, the two trails merge into the fire road. After 600′\, you arrive at the tar pits. Keep going another 600′\, left at the dead end\, and 1/3rd mile to the social event location. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point\, which we will pass\, and then return to after seeing the tar pits. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 500′ gain\, Beginner \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. We may take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sanctuary\, then return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see another bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there in a while\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and wait there for anybody that needs to catch up\, and share snacks and/or beverages. \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes:\nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca)\nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 500′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute and Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions or turns once past the initial path down to the fire road. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. DESCRIPTION:Come hike along the Kern River Trail (Flower Trail 🌷🌺🌼) to Democrat Dam. The hike is about 11 miles total to the Dam and back. It is moderate in difficulty\, but subtable for new hikers. \nWe will hike to the Dam and have a long lunch break. Then return hike to the trailhead. \nMore specifics coming when we get closer. \nWe will meet at the Starbucks on Hwy 178 and 184 at 0730 to arrange carpooling. \nI’m bringing my hiking dog\, Timber. Other dogs OK if leashed and kind to Timber. 🐕‍🦺 \nSometimes we have to change the dates for wildflower hikes do to best time to go. For now it’s Saturday March 18th. Be flexible.

SUMMARY:Zuma Canyon - Big Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and\, unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons\, has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nWe’ll start at Lower Zuma Canyon and take the Zuma Loop trail west to the Zuma Ridge trail. The views improve as the trail climbs\, and there are several great lookouts of Zuma Beach\, Point Dume\, and the ocean beyond. Turning north and climbing further will provide views of Trancas Canyon and Upper Zuma Canyon. \nAfter a brief rest to catch our breath and take in the views\, we turn east and descend a lush trail into Zuma Canyon proper. Here we will enjoy a snack break beside the shady Zuma Creek before hiking up the opposite ridge. We continue on this ridge for while then turn south on the Zuma Canyon Connection trail\, take this to Ocean View Trail and descend to the Bonsall Trailhead and back to our starting point. \n🌄The hike will be about 11 miles with a total ascent of about 2900 ft. 1700 of that is in the first 3 miles. Later there is a 1000 foot gain between mile 5.5 and mile 7.5. Hike is rated DIFFICULT. See the Hike Rating Guide \nBring at least 2 qt water\, snacks\, hat\, sunscreen\, camera. \n🚗Carpooling is highly recommended. There is a convenient park-and-ride by Kanan & 101 \n👉All hikers must stay on established trails. Practice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints \nDirections to trail head: \nWe will be starting the hike promptly at 9:00am. If you want to start at 9:00 am with us plan your trip so that you arrive at least 20 minutes early. \nTake 101 and exit Kanan Rd. Head south toward beaches and turn right on PCH. After about 1/4 mile turn right on Bonsall Dr. Proceed 1 mile up Bonsall until it ends and continue into dirt parking lot. \n👉Important \nTrail statistics are approximate and based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nFor safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. DESCRIPTION:This hike is so cool! It’s a good distance with little elevation gain and it is beautiful. \nThis hike will take us to the Brown Mountain Dam Waterfall. The hike is an out and back at around 8.7 miles total with 650 ft. of elevation gain\, so not steep! Please take note of the earlier start time. \nThis is a route that I created on my own back when I hiked this area every week. I have attached my AllTrails recording from the last time I did this hike. There will be an immediate incline to the top of the canyon. Then there will be a somewhat leveled off section with views of the canyon to the right and hills to the left. We will descend down towards the Paradise Falls area\, pass by a camp area\, and complete a few water crossings before starting our climb up Lizard Rock Trail back to the top of the canyon. After that\, it is all downhill back to our cars. \n* Note 1: There are no plans to stop at Paradise Falls\, however we can take a short break if we are making good time. This area (especially the falls) is often very crowded on weekends. * \n** Note 2: The trails near Paradise Falls are usually closed for 48 hours after heavy rainfall. The current forecast shows a storm starting on 3/20 and stopping on 3/23. I have an alternate route if the trail is closed. The distance should be about the same\, but the elevation gain will decrease. SUMMARY:Upper Las Virgenes - Mt. Basura - Cheeseboro Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our hike will consist of traveling along the Dean’s Cut trail connecting the underbelly of Las Virgenes and Cheseboro Canyons. The star of this hike is Mt Basura\, known for its year-round snow-less skiing. We’ll take or break here. \nNote: this hike was a VIP hike. Now my overgrown secret trail is wide open and named “Dean’s Cut.” \nCheeseboro Canyon is located in the northernmost section of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. It is from these hills that water in the canyons flow to the Pacific. The Chumash Indians lived in these canyons for thousands of years. Many trails within the canyons were original Chumash trails before they were expanded by cattle ranchers. In this large expanse of habitat\, deer\, bobcats\, coyotes and rabbits roam. \nToday\, a great diversity of plants and animals live in the canyons. Wide-spread oaks and outcrops of sedimentary rock provide excellent nesting sites for owls\, hawks and other raptors. The abundance of raptors indicates a large prey population\, especially small mammals and reptiles. In more rugged areas where cattle didn’t graze\, we can still find a variety of native plant communities\, including chaparral\, coastal sage scrub and riparian woodlands. \nA couple of unique facts regarding these canyons: \n• Cheeseboro Canyon has the largest concentrations of birds of prey nesting areas in the U.S. outside of Alaska. \n• The Valley Oak tree\, the largest oak native to the United States and possibly the world\, live in these canyons in what might be the largest southerly stand of trees left. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 8 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,400 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SUMMARY:Bushwhacking Hellhole
DESCRIPTION:This is an exploratory trip. The plan is to hike up Hellhole Canyon and past Maidenhair Falls to the 30 foot waterfall described in Afoot and Afield. It must be pretty gnarly since the description appears to have been removed from the latest edition. There is a campsite described in the book. We may also check out Hellhole flats. On Sunday we’ll hike out to Culp Valley campground and back down the California Riding and Hiking trail.\nI don’t think parking is allowed at the trailhead so we’ll have to start in town (see location).\nNeedless to say this is a trip for people who enjoy bushwhacking and are comfortable scrambling over rocks\, trees\, vines\, etc. \nDISCLAIMER: Hike at your own risk.
