SUMMARY:⭐️🌜🥂 🍷 8 MILE HIKE / PERSEID METEOR SHOWER / BYOB at MT PINOS 🥂🍷⭐️🌜
DESCRIPTION:– 8 MILE HIKE TO MT PINOS / SAWMILL PEAK / NOMINAL ELEVATION GAIN \n( optional 4 mile hike for those of you who may be outta shape these days ) \n⭐️⭐️ HIKE / FOOD / METEOR SHOWER !! ⭐️⭐️ \n⭐️ optional camping at Chula Vista Campground; 120 yards east of the parking lot… first come\, first served… \n( in that order – we’ll do the hike… then return to the parking lot for food and then meteor stuff!! ) \nthere will be SEVERAL telescopes (possibly less these days cuz of that flu thing) in the parking lot set up by a local astronomy club… at an elevation of 8\,300 ft\, no CITY LIGHTS… \nit should be PRIMO STAR-GAZING that evening🌜RED LED HEADLAMPS STRONGLY URGED!!! \nGOOGLE MAPS / SMARTPHONE LINK \nhttps://goo.gl/maps/4F5Ge9RaCyx \nhttp://www.astro-tom.com/avac/observing_sites/mount_pinos.htm \n***NO ADVENTURE PASS REQUIRED IN PARKING LOT \nIT WILL TAKE approx 2 hours travel time from the west side. I’m gonna take off at 10:30AM so I don’t have to stress about being late. the last 45 minutes is a GORGEOUS drive!!! \n(people camping should get there prior to noon to find and set up a camping spot\, so leave the west side around 10AM) \nDIRECTIONS \n1. From the west side\, Take the 405 Freeway north for about 19.1 miles and merge with the 5 Freeway north.2. Continue north on the 5 Freeway for about 46.1 miles.3. Take the Frazier Mountain Park Road exit going west toward Frazier Mountain. Watch carefully for the signs indicating the Frazier Mountain Road exit. (The exit is about 35 miles past Magic Mountain\, and about 3 miles past a small town called Gorman.)4. Continue on road for about 21 miles following the signs to Mt. Pinos. (After about 7 miles along Frazier Mountain road\, the name of the road will change to Cuddy Valley road. About 4 miles past this point\, the road will reach a fork. To the right is Mil Portrero Hwy\, and to the left is Mt. Pinos road. Stay to the left and continue on Mt. Pinos road for another 10 miles and you’ll reach the Mt. Pinos parking lot!5. The star party will take place in the large open parking lot at the end of the road. Park along the left hand side as you drive in! \n(borrowed from the astronomy club) Parking and Headlights: \nIf you drive up to Mt. Pinos on your own\, please try to arrive at the star party site before the sun sets so that we don’t have our headlights on as we drive in. Headlights and other bright lights ruin the night vision of the observers at the site. For this reason it is strongly recommended to use your parking lights and not to turn your headlights on when leaving the site until you are out of the parking area. There may be limited parking at the site\, so that is another reason to arrive early and ensure a space. RED LED flashlights strongly encouraged!!! \nGOOD CARPOOLING LOCATIONS ARE THE WHOLE FOODS OFF THE 405 AND SEPULVEDA IN SHERMAN OAKS AND THE McDONALDS ON ROXFORD STREET ABOUT A MILE NORTH OF WHERE THE 405 AND THE 5 FREEWAYS INTERSECT. \n🛑 BRING CHAIRS / BLANKETS / WARM CLOTHES!!! GETS SURPRISINGLY CHILLY THERE AT NIGHT!! 🛑 \nGREAT video of this event a couple years ago!! \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6lHK_HJf68

SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate\, with Easy option
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 1100′ gain\, Intermediate\nEasy Option: 1.5 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. There are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll all begin the climb together. Those doing the easier option will stop after 0.7 miles and wait for about 45 minutes until the rest of us return to this spot for our social event. While waiting\, they can continue to climb any portion they want and return to this spot\, or just take in the views. \nThe rest will continue for 1.3 miles until a flat rock before heading back the same way to the social event spot. A few will probably continue another 1/2 mile until the end of the trail. \nAt the social event spot\, we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Simi Valley and will share snacks and beverages. \nThere is really no way to get lost on this hike\, so everybody will move along at whatever pace they want. \nHike (click this link for a pic)\nDistance: 4.0 miles or 1.5 miles\nGain: 1100′ or 400′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.\nDifficulty: Intermediate or Fit Beginer\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: The entire first half is incline. Some of the trail is rugged sandstone. Some of the trail is covered in large gravel.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Encelia\nAka\, California Bush Sunflower\, California Brittlebush\, Coast Sunflower\, El Dorado. \nCenter is brown. When the center is yellow\, it is Brittlebush\, from the brittleness of the stems. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard\nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). It grows everywhere along the sides of the trail\, often having to be cut back during trail maintenance. \nDirections\nChumash Trail\n3200 Flanagan Dr.\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.293497\, -118.671176 \nFrom CA-118\nI-118\, exit Yosemite.\nNorth on Yosemite for 1.3 miles.\nRight (east) on Flanagan Dr. for 08. miles.\nContinue until the street ends and park. \nFAQ\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Local Beginners/ Easy Hike - Whitney Canyon to the Cascades
DESCRIPTION:Local Beginner’s / Easy Hike!! Whitney Canyon to the cascades \nDistance: ~ 4.5 miles total\, out and back. \nGain: Almost none \nRated: Easy\, suitable for beginners and families. \nTime: About 2.5 hours \nDescription: (GPS Co-ords: 34.364404\, -118.500829 )\nA beautiful mostly flat 4.5 mile hike\, along a river bed with shady oak trees along most of the route. This is such a pleasant and easy “out and back” hike that you do not have to leave the kids or dog at home either. \nYour hike starts along a dirt road\, but after about a half mile\, becomes a single track – all the way to the “Cascades” – the site of a nice little waterfall (not flowing at this time of year). Expect to see squirrels\, deer\, woodpeckers and other birds that like this riparian habitat. We’ve also once seen a black bear! \nBring: This hike is short but you might like to bring a small snack to eat at the waterfall or along the way\, water (~1 liter)\, sun protection/hat. \nDogs: Allowed\, if on a leash and well-behaved around other dogs and people. (The MRCA fine\, if your dog is caught off-leash is $265.) \nMeeting place: \nMeet at the Whitney Canyon trailhead (by the gate\, GPS Co-ords: 34.364404\, -118.500829 ) at 7:15 AM for an 7:30AM SHARP departure down the trail. We should be back by about 9:30AM before the day heats up. \nDirections: From Valencia\, take the I-5 Freeway south ; from San Fernando Valley\, take 1-5 freeway North. Get on the SR-14 North and be ready to take the first Exit – Newhall Avenue. Take a right at the fork on the off-ramp. and when you reach the stop sign\, turn right. This will lead you quickly into the Park and Ride that is adjacent to SR-14. Parking is FREE. Park in the dirt lot to the left of the asphalt Park and Ride. \nNOTE: Park in the dirt/gravel overflow lot below to the left of the park and ride. Look for your leader by the gate in the gravel/dirt lot\, bottom right side. This is the trail head for Whitney Canyon. \nLeader: Dianne

SUMMARY:DAGGER FLAT TRAIL RECONSTRUCTION - Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:******** THIS IS NOT A HIKE ***********\n*** RAIN\, SNOW OR EXCESS HEAT AT WORK SITE WILL CANCEL EVENT ** \nJoin Dianne for some light trail clean up of the DAGGER FLAT TRAIL – No experience required! \nTHIS IS NOT A HIKE\, but you will be among some of the most spectacular scenery near SCV. The trail is still there! Help Dianne bring it back from being a bit overgrown after the last fire. \nAt this time we are restoring the beginning of the trail\, closest to the trail head. We will show you how to make/ maintain a trail. Get that special feeling of accomplishment as you work with other volunteers to complete manageable small outdoor projects (Trimming\, trail brushing and stashing trimmings). No heavy lifting etc. at this time. Work for a few hours\, we will leave to come back early if it gets too hot. \nPLEASE only RSVP “Yes” if you can make it. \nMeet At:\nGoogle Latitude/Longitude coordinates 34.360824\, -118.391941. We meet at Sand Canyon Road and 3N17 white gate. \nDirections to Meeting Spot (White Gate for 3N17):\nTake the I-5 to the SR-14 North. Exit at Sand Canyon\, turn right (South/East). Go all the way past all the houses\, Placerita Canyon etc.\, going straight. Enter the Angeles National Forest and continue up!up!up! Sand Canyon Road until you see a memorial at a bad corner (on the right side). Shortly after this you will see a small brown sign “Santa Clara Divide Road” on the left. Park in one of the turnouts to the left\, right\, or above this sign but not blocking the white gate. Dianne will caravan you and your car to the trail head. \nMeeting Time:\nWe will meet at 7:45AM and leave for the trail head no later than 8:00AM SHARP. The trail head is 4 miles along Forest Road 3N17. \nBring:\nBoots\, plenty of WATER\, electrolytes\, and snacks\, a sack lunch. TP (there are no bathrooms)\, strong garden GLOVES (suede leather type recommended) \, a cooling towel\, sunscreen\, sun hat\, bandana. Bring a mask if you cannot maintain social distancing. (A mask will also keep dust off of your face while working) \nDo Not Bring:\nDogs\, as they get bored. Also\, it would not be safe to bring young children (due to sharp tools and trail is narrow). Leave your garden tools at home\, as we could damage them or lose them. \nThank you for helping bring back this trail\, so we can all enjoy it. \nLeader: Dianne

SUMMARY:eBike Trail Ride: ULV - Cheeseboro - Palo Comado Big Loop
DESCRIPTION:Its been several years since I posted a bike ride. All bikes are welcome. On this one we’ll travel the gently rounded hills and canyons of Cheeseboro and Palo Comado Canyons\, starting from Upper Las Virgenes Canyon. \nThis outing will be an opportunity to discuss ebike tips and tricks. I am on my third ebike \nWe’ll ride at a pace suitable for semi-beginners on mostly hard-packed and wide trails. Planned ride is a 13.5 mile loop with 2\,300 ft total ascent. \nBring a tool kit\, helmet\, water and snacks. \nHistorical note: At the time I was posting bike rides\, regular bike riders called ebike riders “cheaters.” As I look around today\, these same people now have their own ebikes. There sure are a lot of them these days. Hence I am rebooting my group bike rides. \nDirections\nDrive to the north end of Las Virgenes Canyon Rd. Park on street taking note of parking restrictions. We meet at the end of the road.

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Lower Loop
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasy option\, 1.4 miles\, 450′ gain\, Fit Beginner \nThe address given is not the address of the hike. It is nearby and may cause you to drive past the trailhead if navigating by GPS. \nRoute\nFrom the trailhead parking lot\, up for 0.7 mile on Long Canyon Trail to a bench. For those doing the easy option\, wait here about 40 minutes. They can spend that time going out and back in the area\, if they like. \nFor the regular route\, we do a 2 mile loop with 400′ of gain.\nWe turn right\, go up 300 feet\, then down Sunrise Trail 4/5 of a mile.\nLeft at the junction for 300 feet.\nLeft at the split for 200 feet up a relatively steep incline.\nLeft on Autumn Ridge\, which is a fire road.\nContinue on this extended incline for about 2000 steps\, arriving at the five-points intersection.\nTake an “easy” left\, not a hard left\, for about 500′ back to the bench were those that did the easy route will be waiting. \nWe’ll have a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes before turning right and heading back down to the trail head parking lot. \nInteresting Notes \nTurkey Mullein \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupify fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 3 miles\nGain: 800\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first 15 minutes of the hike\, followed by an extended incline at the halfway point.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations: The beginning is a tough climb.\nThere is an extended incline of about 2000 steps half way through the hike.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share.\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp for hikes that end after sunset.\nSunscreen and/or hat if needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nThose that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, can head directly back down to the parking lot. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 3/4 point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nDirections\nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nEasier Option: 3.2 miles\, 400′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nThe address is not the address of the hike\, but a nearby address that should get you to pass by the trailhead. \nWe’ll be stopping at various points to regroup and this is not a conditioning hike. It is a social hike. \nWe will start by heading the back way from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot and around to an asphalt road. At this point\, if you want a shorter hike\, turn left for 0.6 miles and 220 feet of gain\, arriving at the Rockuzzi on the left. \nOtherwise\, we’ll make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, make a left\, then head for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading up 50 yards and then down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know where it is\, for a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we’ll continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the trail head parking lot. \nInteresting Notes \nTurkey Mullein \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. \nHike \nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 800\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. It is a fire road incline of about 1 mile.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 2/3 point along the hike. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections: \nWhere of Long Canyon Rd. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. If this happens\, we’ll need another 15 minutes to carpool from a nearby parking lot. \nFAQ\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Talopop - Suitable for fit beginners
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 4.1 miles\, 720′ gain.\nEasier route: 3.9 miles\, 500′ gain. \nIs it Talepop or Talopop? Maps and signs that I have seen\, use the 2nd spelling\, but a lot of references use the other. \nWe’ll meet in front of the facilities building at the center of the park. This is a lollipop hike. \nSome of the hike is fire road\, and a lot of the hike is single-track. Some has complete exposure to the sun\, and some is through shaded wooded areas. \nWe’ll head behind the facilities building in the center and head left down the Las Virgenes Trail. After 1/3 mile\, the trail turns 90 degrees\, we continue on the easier route for 1/10th mile instead of taking the trail that climbs the hill. \nAfter\, we cross the dry creek bed where a bridge used to be and come to a fire road. \nEasier Route: For those that want the slightly easier route\, turn left. Continue for 1.2 miles\, turning right\, and continuing on this path straight for 0.3 miles to the social event. \nRegular Route: Turn right and it becomes the Talopop Trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1.8 miles until it dead ends at a fire road\, Liberty Canyon Trail. There\, we’ll wait for others to catch up\, and we can share some beverages and/or snacks before continuing. \nWe’ll turn left and after 1/3 mile\, the trail dead ends again at Las Virgenes Fire Road. We’ll turn left again and travel 1.1 miles where we’ll hit another junction\, turning right back onto Las Virgenes Trail for the final 0.4 mile return\, making a left at the split right behind the facilities building. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nCalifornia Sagebrush – Artemesia Californica \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nAn infusion can be made for an insect repellent. \nDirections: \nTalopop\nJuan Bautista de Anza Park\n3701 Lost Hills Road\nCalabasas\, CA 91301 \nFrom the 118\nWest to CA-23 south\nCA-23 south for 7.4 miles\nUS-101 east for 9.5 miles\nExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.\nLost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 miles\nPark on the right. \nFrom the 101\nExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.\nLost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 miles\nPark on the right. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4.1 miles\, 3.5 hours\, counter-clockwise\nor 3.9 miles\, out and back.\nElevation Gain: 720′ or 500′\nDistribution: Reasonably well distributed\, some of the gain on the return portion.\nShape: Lollipop or out-and-back (easier route)\nDifficulty: Fit-Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: No\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start.\nParking: Free in the paved lot\, or along the street..\nTrail: Fire Road and single track\, good condition. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. Click HERE for route. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nThose that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or an arrow on the ground made of sticks. \nWhat to Bring:\n2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nFAQ\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Last Minute Hike - Ray Miller Trail - Escape The Heat!
DESCRIPTION:7 miles\, 1200′ gain\, Intermediate \nJoin us at the Ray Miller Trail in Pt Mugu to escape the heat. Expect the temp to be about 75° at 6:00 p.m today. \nThis is a 7-mile loop\, with a picnic table at the halfway point. We will be taking the Ray Miller Trail up\, and the Scenic Trail down. The last 1.5 miles of the hike will be a walk along the PCH from Sycamore Canyon to La Jolla Canyon. We have the option of walking along the road or the beach. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, so bring sun protection and lots of water. 2-3 Liters per person is recommended. \nWe will meet on the cliff side of the PCH right outside the La Jolla Canyon entrance. DO NOT PARK IN THE PARKING LOT as it closes at 8:00 p.m. Parallel park on the PCH\, being mindful of parking signs. Parking on the PCH is only until 10:00 p.m.\, so we will plan on finishing the hike before 10:00 p.m. \nDirections:\nLa Jolla Canyon/Ray Miller Trailhead\n(Near) 9000 Pacific Coast Hwy\nMalibu\, CA 90265 \nFrom Los Angeles\nTake the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Park on either side of the PCH being mindful of paring signs. DO NOT PARK IN THE LOT as it closes too early. \nFrom Ventura\nTake PCH eastward\, continuing 4 miles past Las Posas Road\, before Thornhill Broome Beach. Park on either side of the PCH. You may need to make a U-turn\, if you’re parking on the cliff side of the PCH. \nDo not leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nThis hike is on the harder end of the intermediate spectrum\, based on distance and elevation gain. Fit beginners will do fine on this hike\, but this hike may be too hard for fresh beginners. If it becomes too hard\, they can always turn around and go back the way we came. Nearly all of the elevation gain is in the first half. \nThe event host will be stopping at various points to let people catch up. Those that wish to move ahead at a faster pace\, are welcome to do so if they know the route but are on their own regarding navigation. \nThe Hike\nWe will meet at the intersection of the PCH and the La Jolla Canyon entrance. After our usual 15-minute grace period\, we will walk about 2/10ths of a mile to the actual trailhead\, which is the Ray Miller Trailhead. The next 2.7 miles of the hike will be a steady uphill\, with ever expanding ocean views. This hill is not too steep but will likely get your heart pounding. There\, we will turn right on the Overlook Trail. After another 0.9 miles\, we will arrive at a picnic table where we will have our social event. We will likely cut it shorter than usual in order to finish the hike on time. After the social event\, we continue down the Overlook Trail to the Scenic Trail. Then the Scenic Trail will take us down to Sycamore Canyon Campground. Finally\, we will take the road back to our cars for about 1.5 miles. We have the option of walking along the road the entire way or walking along the beach for part of the way. \nThe Social Event:\nThis is a pot-luck hike. We’ll be stopping at the 1/2-way point at a picnic table\, so please bring food and drink to share\, and any utensils your items might require. However\, we will likely limit it to 30 minutes this time in order to finish the hike early enough to move our cars before 10:00 p.m. \nDetails\nDistance: ~7.2 miles\nGain: ~1200′\nDistribution: 90+% of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty: Upper intermediate spectrum.\nShape: Clockwise loop.\nPace: Moderate\, depends on the group.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, and single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours (hike)\nDogs: This is a state park so dogs are not allowed.\nRestrooms: Yes\, porta-potties.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: DO NOT PARK IN THE LOT. The lot closes early. Park on the PCH\, being mindful of parking signs. We will meet at the entrance to La Jolla Canyon\, not at the trailhead. We will only walk to the trailhead after waiting for everyone to arrive. \nNavigation: Host memory and GPS navigation as needed.\nTrack can be found here: \nHike type: Conditioning/Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a very fast pace because this is a conditioning/social hike\, not a true conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 100 steps. \nHelpful Links\nOfficial Info\nRules and Regulations\nMap \nFAQ\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Dos Vientos - Labor Day Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Come to the hike only (3:00p)\, picnic only (5:00p)\, or both. \nWarning: Google Maps may take you to the incorrect location\, although the address is correct. Please follow the written directions. \n3.5 miles\, 500′ gain\, or if you choose to continue\, 5.2 miles\, 1140′ gain. \nThe Hike\n3:00 pm at the parking lot entrance. \nThe hike starts on the Park View trail\, completely flat along a gravel track that moves around the Dos Vientos park. It then gently rises into the surrounding hills\, continuing onto the Powerline trail. \nThe first 1.75 miles has about 350′ of gain and another 150′ of gain on the return\, including an extended incline of about 450 steps. The extended incline is fire road\, so it isn’t especially steep. \nAt the height of this point\, there is a fantastic overlook. \nFor some additional challenge\, one can continue another 0.85 miles for another 450′ of gain and 190′ on the return. It continues to the next electrical tower where the trail splits. This leads to the 2\,200 feet high Conejo Mountain in Camarillo\, CA. \nThis extension can be done by beginners\, but they will probably want to go slowly and rest a moment after each 100 steps. While not steep\, this incline is extended\, so I put this in the intermediate category. \nThis trail offers panoramic views of the Oxnard Plain\, the Pacific Ocean\, numerous Channel Islands\, Boney Mountain\, Mugu Lagoon\, and the Topa Topa Mountains. \nThe mountainside is mixed with the remnants of a brush fire and new growth. I will be marking the trail with white arrows at junctions so that nobody gets lost and hikers can turn around at any point. \nThe Picnic\nApproximately 5:00p. \nThe location of the picnic will be at this park\, but since we aren’t reserving an area\, we’ll use whatever area is available. Our first choice will be under the awning to the right of the parking lot (enter heading west from Borchard) immediately after entering. If that is taken\, there are more grills just to the side of that area\, and if that is in use\, there are more areas in the park. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nYou can leave your pot luck item in the car and retrieve it after the hike. Bring something to put on in case it starts to get cool. \nAlcohol IS allowed in this park. \nThe Park\nThe Dos Vientos park and recreation center building is open until 10pm on weekdays\, 6pm on weekends\, has plenty of parking in a paved lot\, has indoor drinking fountains and bathrooms\, and various picnic areas with barbecue grills. \nNote that the main picnic area may be rented\, but is otherwise is first-come\, first-served. Jim\, your host\, will be bringing a bag of charcoal and fluid. \nInteresting Notes.\nYou will see these on the hike. \nPrickly Pear Cactus\nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn off needles. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nLichen\nA composite organism arising from algae\, cyanobacteria\, or both\, and often fungi. They come in many colors. Not related to moss or any plant. They get all their food from photosynthesis\, air\, water\, and minerals in their environment. Most comes from air\, and therefore\, can be used to monitor air pollution. 6% of earth’s land surface is covered by lichens.
