SUMMARY:China Flats - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 1000′ gain\, Intermediate. \nThe entire first half is an incline. Nothing super steep\, but beginners will find this climb exhausting. Fit beginners can still complete this hike\, as we’ll be stopping at junctions to let everybody catch up. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike. \nThere are several routes that can be taken\, and the one I’ll be taking is posted as part of this description. SUMMARY:Trail Restoration on the Guadalasca Trail in Pt. Mugu State Park (Sycamore Cyn)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWe have made a lot of progress with fixing the ruts on Guadalasca\, but long sections were devastated by the rain! Happily the lower sections we already worked have held up well\, but there is lots to keep us busy higher up. This is a joint project between the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nWe will be driving into the park with 4-wheel drive vehicles. Transportation is limited so be sure to sign up to secure a ride in! \nAt this time State Parks is requiring all volunteers working on state park property to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll drive into the park from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. Bring a snacks and lunch to eat on the trail; we’ll break for lunch about 11:30. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water\, snacks. Bring work gloves – we can’t loan you gloves during the pandemic. \nYou can learn more about trail restoration work here http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml and here http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php \nParents/guardians are responsible for minors at all times\, and they must constantly and directly supervise children under 14. Children must be over 7-years old to attend.

SUMMARY:Condor Peak Exploratory Scramble
DESCRIPTION:Trying a new route and avoiding a car shuttle this time around. Limiting the number of attendees since it’s exploratory and going to be a long day/hike. \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 16 miles \nElevation Gain: >4000 \nRating : 9/10\, for the experienced only – not for beginner or slow hikers \nTrail: Uneven rocky terrain and single track\, bushwhacking and some creek crossing\, scrambling and a bit of fire road. VERY steep uphill. \nThe Plan \nWe will meet at the trailhead for Trail Canyon Falls to start our hike. NO car shuttle this time around. The trail follows Gold Creek and goes by some rustic cabins from the 1920’s\, it continues along the creek heading up this amazingly deep canyon. At about 1.5 miles from the beginning we’ll get our first view of the falls. Our first break will be at the 2 mile mark at the base of the waterfall. We’ll stop for some pictures then venture on above the falls. This is where a large portion of our gain comes in – 3000 feet in less than 3 miles and will include scrambling on rocks. Once we reach Condor\, we will have a lunch break and head back down the regular trail back towards the falls. There will likely be a small portion of bushwhacking and trail finding as we did have some difficulty locating an actual trail the last time we did this. \nThe Story \nCondor Peak (elev. 5540) stands high above Big Tujunga Canyon\, across from Mount Lukens\, and west of Josephine Peak. On a clear day it commands superb views of the western San Gabriel Mountains. If you come in the spring when the Ceanothus is in bloom\, you will be treated to a show of beautiful lilac-colored flowers. \nThe peak is named after the endangered California Condor (Gymnogyps californianus). A hundred years ago it was a nesting ground for the “monarchs of the air”\, and they could be seen wheeling gracefully overhead in search of something dead to eat. Sadly\, the condor’s numbers have declined dramatically. The last condor sighting in the area was before World War II. \nDirections: \nLeave any valuables at home and take all important items (keys\, phone\, wallet\, etc.) on the hike with you. Don’t leave anything of any importance in your car. \n210 West exit at Sunland Blvd. (#11) and turn right (N) towards Sunland – Tujunga \n210 East exit at Sunland Blvd (#11) and turn left (N) towards Sunland – Tujunga \nTake Sunland Blvd which becomes Foothill Blvd. about .8 miles to Oro Vista Ave and turn left. There’s a Jack In The Box and 7-11 on the left and a Shell station on the right at Oro Vista Ave. Stay on Oro Vista Ave and it curves to the right and becomes Big Tujunga Canyon Road which will take you to the trailhead. The turnout\, NF 3n-29\, is easy to spot\, but not marked very well. It’s about 4.7 miles in from the curve at the end of Oro Vista Ave. It’s just before mile marker 2.05. If you pass Ottie Road you went too far. Park on Big Tujunga or in the turnout but be sure to read the parking signs and don’t block the gate. \nFor those GPS people out there these coordinates are for where NF 3n-29 meets Big Tujunga: N34 18.224 W118 15.490. \nThis location does not require a National Forest Adventure Pass. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. SUMMARY:Spahn Ranch - Stagecoach Rd - El Camino Nuevo Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our hike will be steeped in local history and lore. We’ll begin our trek at Chatsworth Park South where we’ll find our way to the Old Stagecoach Rd. From the top of the Old Stagecoach Rd we’ll hook up with the Mattingly Trail and take that to the Spahn Ranch. We’ll return via the El Camino Nuevo. \nEnjoy the history lessons below 🙂 \nThe Spahn Ranch\nThe ranch took its name from dairy farmer George Spahn\, who purchased the property in 1948. Many western-themed movies and television shows were filmed on the ranch\, including Duel in the Sun (1946) and television episodes of Bonanza\, The Lone Ranger\, and Zorro. It was also the filming location for the B-movie The Creeping Terror. \nLoading ...\nThe Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers\, the “Manson Family\,” for much of 1968 and 1969. Spahn was 80 years old and living at the ranch when he allowed The Manson Family (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Manson#Manson_Family) to move in\, rent-free\, in exchange for labor. \nDon’t forget to participate in a family photo! \n[vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”100827\,100826″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”img_link_large” custom_links_target=”_blank”] \nA wildfire destroyed all of the Spahn Movie Ranch’s film sets and residential structures on September 26\, 1970. George Spahn died on September 22\, 1974\, and is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in nearby Newhall\, California. \nThe Old Stagecoach Road\nAnother HWD regular\, The Old Stagecoach Road was built In 1859. It provided an inland route between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara that was shorter than the coastal route. The first overland stagecoach to use the pass made its run between San Francisco and Los Angeles on April 6\, 1861. We’ll be hiking along the notorious Devils Slide segment which will be the most difficult segment with 400′ gain in half mile. \nHere we are at the 80th anniversary of the dedication and plaque installation and \n \nHere is a video from the original dedication \n \nEl Camino Nuevo\nMore appropriately known as the Chatsworth Grade Road it replaced the stagecoach route in 1895 and provided an easier and smoother route to transport goods. It was also able to accommodate motorized vehicles. It was replaced in 1917 by an improved asphalt paved Santa Susana Pass Road that is still traveled today. \nWe’ll be hiking along the old grade which was replaced by the familiar Old Santa Susana Pass in 1917 \nIn this 1900 photo of the old grade I have indicated some retaining walls built of dimensional sandstone from the Bannon quarry. The walls are still there and I will point then out during hike. \n \nFlorence and Charles Mattingly\nThe Mattingly’s lived in Los Angeles where Charles was a prominent attorney. They purchased two 160 acre properties in 1909 and 1912. We’ll be traversing this property\, however\, there is no evidence that they ever lived in Chatsworth. \n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7.0 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,550 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections\nGo all the way to the west end of Devonshire and enter park. Follow Shadow Oak Dr. around and bear left to parking lot. You’ll pass some overflow parking along the way — you may need it ;). We meet at the northwest corner of parking lot \n \n

SUMMARY:Angel Vista potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have our typical snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 take the Ventu Park exit (3 miles north/west of the 23) and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so please keep the noise down. \nWe will meet not quite at the end of the road. We’ll cross a gate along the side of the street and across from the houses\, then move 100 yards to the right and enter the trail. \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 4 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:🏛 Hail To The Trail: Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch - 2022
DESCRIPTION:This hike is sponsored by Amazon – https://amzn.to/2GnCP0a \nAn HWD Classic! \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \n \nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails–Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon–to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers.\n \nBetween the MASH set and the ranch we’ll enjoy a snack break at Century Lake. Part of the famous jump into the river by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paul Newman & Robert Redford) was done by stuntmen at Century Lake (with plenty of Hollywood magic helping out) because the river in Colorado seen in the film wasn’t deep enough to support such a high jump. \n \nOn our return to the ranch we’ll take a side trip to a scenic vista point at the top of Lake View Trail will It will provide us a beautiful view of Malibou Lake and the surrounding mountains. Reagan was the honorary mayor of Malibou Lake in 1953. \n \nBring plenty of water\, snacks an a camera \n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 6 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SUMMARY:2-22-22 - Oakbrook Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.2 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy intermediate. \nThe first part is a steady incline\, followed by a rolling trail to our destination. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. There are no super steep sections. \nThis hike takes us to a secret spot below a large rock formation. Naturally into the side of the rock is a half-globe carved out of it\, giving us a quasi-cave area to sit and have our social event. \nThis is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. We’ll stop at the turn around point for a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, where we will share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nThe Route (photo posted): \nHike\nDistance: 3.2 miles\nGain: 900′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations:\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, about a block from the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Maybe by the restrooms.\nParking: Park in the street. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nManzanita \nRounded leaves. Redish trunk and stems. Hard wood. Lots of curves. People used to spray this tree with lacquer and mount on their walls like a “tree of life” for decoration. \nSticky Monkeyflower \nOf the Snapdragon family. The flowers are supposed to resemble a laughing monkey’s face. Leaves are very sticky on the underside. \nDirections: \nOakbrook Vista Trailhead\n3222 Lang Ranch Pkwy.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91362\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.212466\, -118.820325 \nFrom CA-23:\nExit 15 Avenida de Los Arboles.\nEast on Avenida de Los Arboles until it ends\, 1.6 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Westlake Blvd 0.2 miles.\nLeft (east) on Lang Ranch Pkwy. 0.2 miles.\nPark on street\, trailhead on the right (south) side. \nRelease of Liability:\nYou assume all risks of this hike. SUMMARY:Los Padres - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate. \nA fit beginner can handle this. Because there are a couple extended inclines\, I’ve rated this at the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. That’s OK\, because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll stop at various points to let people catch up. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and continue climbing up. We’ll come to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll come to a split off to the right. We’ll take this split and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to the “Giants Picnic Table”\, which I call that because its parts are super thick. \nWe’ll stop for a social event and share snacks and drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map posted as a photo with this description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \nHike Distance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \nYucca \nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, or\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or\, scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \nWild Cucumber \nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \nDirections \nLos Padres Trailhead\n15 Los Padres Drive\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101:\nWest of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. Moorpark Rd.\nSouth on Moorpark Rd. north for 1000 ft.\nLeft on Los Padres Dr.\nAfter 200 ft\, trailhead on the right.\nPark on the street. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Cienega Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 11.4 miles \nElevation Gain: 2000 \nRating: 7/10 \nNot for beginners! No sweeper \nFor intermediate and advanced hikers only \nhttp://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/8/0/600_70743712.jpeg \nDon’s \nTrail: a bit of asphalt and then single track trail; out and back and a loop. \nMore about this route: From the parking area we head down an asphalt road which takes us to the first canyon. In this first canyon there is a trail in some portions and not so much in other parts. There will be a few spots of some minor boulder hopping and very short climbs. If there is any water it should be avoidable. At the end of this canyon is where we’ll encounter either overgrown trails or no trail at all as we start our ascent to the loop trail. This section is less than an 1/8 of a mile and brings us to the middle portion of the route. This area does not get much use which can make the trail overgrown and difficult to find in some areas. In this area we’ll also have a rather continuous climb as we head over to Piano Box. There will be a couple spots with unavoidable water\, but not very deep. This area is also like a roller coaster with ups and downs\, nothing crazy steep for long distances\, but yes there are steep spots. We’ll also get some great views to the north and Redrock Mountain and stop and look at some wind caves. This middle portion will drop us down into an area known as Piano Box which is also the entrance to Fish Canyon Narrows. The trail down to Piano Box is deteriorated in very short sections and will require extra care when traversing. We will take an elongated break here and hopefully there will be some water flowing so we can cool off a bit before returning the final few miles to the cars. \nIn summary: This is a great hike with many different aspects contained in one route and a great sense of accomplishment when complete. This is NOT a regular trail hike where you can return to your car if you get tired like at Griffith Park. Depending on the weather you can never have too much water on this hike. \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/1/a/8/600_70752712.jpeg \nThe area: Here\, amid the arid-looking mountains north of Castaic Lake\, Castaic Creek flows the better part of the year through a sinuous gorge flanked by picturesque sandstone outcrops. The creek is perfect for wading – shallow\, slow-moving\, and warmed by the sun. Fish Canyon Narrows: In the trenchlike confines of middle Fish Canyon\, aridity and moisture stand side by side\, separated by a matter of a few yards. Mountain mahogany\, manzanita and other drought-resistant shrubs cling to the walls\, while a shallow stream gurgles merrily past a line of oaks\, sycamores\, willows\, and cottonwoods. It is almost as if a little slice of the Pacific Northwest was transplanted to Southern California. \nThis is a dog friendly hike! \nPARKING PASS REQUIRED As with all National Forest Land a parking pass is required and can be purchased at Sport Chalet\, Big 5 and other places. $5/day or $30/yr. You could get a ticket here. \nDirections: Head north of the San Fernando Valley on the 5 freeway and go about 6 miles north of Lake Hughes/Castaic exiting at Templin Hwy. Go right to the end of Templin Hwy (about 4 miles) At the end of Templin HWY you will see a gate and a road going to a LADWP facility to your right. Park at this gate. The map above works\, but you do need to continue on the the end om Templin as described above. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. Well behaved dogs are welcome on this one\, but need to be picked up after. \n************************************* \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. Map reading\, navigation and route choice are the key. Orienteering is a sport for everyone\, regardless of age or experience. At advanced levels it is very competitive. Others\, while learning\, often go in small groups . It is done at your pace\, whether you run or walk it . The satisfaction is in finding your own way. Sample ‘O’ maps will show you more about Orienteering than any words. We will be meeting for breakfast prior to heading over to the orienteering site in order to further explain and answer any additional questions about this event. \n10:00 am Course Opens \nAll who attended previous events have enjoyed them so doing this again was a no-brainer. There are numerous levels of courses made available to all participants. Each course gets longer and offers more control points to locate along the way. In a nutshell\, each team will receive an electronic e-chip which fits on your finger and will be assigned to one team member and is used to record the start\, finding of all control points and finish\, ultimately providing that teams statistics and time to complete the course. The starts are staggered and you won’t receive the actual map until your team starts the course. If you have a compass feel free to bring it or they will have them available there for a small rental fee. Everything else will be provided on-site. The map provided will identify the location of up to 14 “control points”. Your team will try and locate all the control points in the correct order by orienting the map with your surrounding terrain. There is a sample orienteering map in the files section of our site. \nSTATS: \nDistance: 3-5+ miles\, depends upon your route finding abilities \nElevation Gain: unknown \nRating: 2-4/10\, fun\, fun\, fun. \nFees: \n$5 member youth\n$8 member adult (age 21+)\n$10 non-member youth\n$13 non-member adult\nOne Child\, 10 years and younger\, is FREE per paying adult. \nEquipment rental fees:\n$2 E-stick rental (mandatory for each entry unless you have your own\, or the event is Urban O)\n$2 compass rental (based on availability) \n$40 charge for a lost estick \nLAOC is a non-profit organization. Fees collected are used for permits\, insurance\, additional supplies\, labor\, and mapping to provide more orienteering opportunities! \nIMPORTANT INFORMATION\, PLEASE READ: \nAt Registration: Each individual or group going on a course needs to have an EP finger stick (also called an SI card\, e-card\, chip\, dibber\, etc.). Be sure your name\, course\, and e-punch number are entered so the organizers can determine who’s on a given course (and check that everyone returns safely). \nAt the Start Area: Request a start time from the Start official. Then\, while you’re waiting for your start time\, be sure to clear and check your finger stick before going out on your course. The CLEAR unit deletes any old data on the card that may cause confusing results\, and the CHECK unit confirms that the card has been cleared and is ready to be used. It takes about 6 seconds to clear the card\, and less than one second for a check. When you are told to start\, or when your start time has arrived\, be sure to punch the START unit before heading out on your course. This writes your start time to your finger stick. \nOn the Course: Visit each control in the proper order (if it’s a point-to-point course). Be sure to check that the control code on the unit matches the control code on your course. Insert your finger stick at each control unit\, and wait until you hear a beep and see a flash on the unit. It usually takes about a second. If there is no beep or flash\, the unit may be malfunctioning; if so\, punch the edge of your map with the pin punch attached to the control flag to prove that you visited the control.\nIf you punch a wrong control by mistake\, or punch controls out of order\, it does not matter as long as you eventually punch all of the controls in the proper order. Thus\, for example\, if you find and punch control #4 before control #3\, it is okay as long as you then find #3 and punch it\, and then revisit #4 and re-punch it before continuing on to #5. Also\, it does not cause any problems if you happen to punch a control that is not on your course. \nRemember to punch the final control on your course–that is\, the last control before the Finish\, often called the “Go” control. It is sometimes very close to the Finish\, and may be easy to overlook. \nAt the Finish: Punch the FINISH unit at the Finish line. This writes the finish time on your finger stick. \nAfter the Finish: Then go directly to the EP table and download your results. To do that\, place your finger stick in the download unit until it beeps (which can take several seconds). You will be told if you completed the course correctly and what your time was. You will receive a printout of your splits. You may keep your map and the splits printout. \nKeep In Mind…\nBe sure to check in at the EP table whether or not you finish your course\, or if you decide not to go out on a course after you have entered your name in the competitor list. If you do not check in\, you will be listed as a missing runner\, and we will have to initiate a search for you. \nDIRECTIONS\nWe will meet at Starbucks right down the street at 9 am for a caffeine fix and to develop some strategies and answer questions. We can also consolidate cars here to split the parking fee at the dam. Address: 15700 Arrow Hwy\, Irwindale 91706 \nThe actual orienteering is at Santa Fe Dam – look for orange and white O-signs. \nFrom the north (210 fwy)\, using 605 S\, exit Arrow Hwy. Go east (left). From the south (10\, 60\, etc)\, using 605 N\, get off at Live Oak Ave\, go east (right) and join onto Arrow Hwy. Continue on Arrow Hwy to Park Entrance on left opposite Azusa Canyon Rd and pay entrance fee of $12. To go to Starbucks\, just continue for a couple of blocks to the corner of Arrow and 4th St. It will be on the right. \n******************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member). \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:VIP Hike in Upper Rustic Canyon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Scroll Down To RSVP” link=”url:%23rsvp”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The secret recesses of Upper Rustic Canyon and it’s shady “bay tree” tributary\, invite the avid local hiker on an adventurous loop hike on unmarked and partially overgrown trails along some of the most rugged sections of the Santa Monica Mountains. \nAt the outset we descend into Upper Rustic Canyon where we will be joined by scattered live oak and a nice mixture of sycamores\, willows\, bay laurels\, ferns and assorted riparian plants — hallmarks of a year round water supply\, at least underground. Much of the hiking here is along an uneven creek bed. \nThere may be some poison oak along the creek. Bring some Tecnu \nLoading ...\nWe exit Upper Rustic by way of the Bay Tree Trail. A dense grove of bay laurel tree stumps sprouted here after the 1978 Mandeville Canyon fire\, creating what is surely one of the most densely shaded spots in the Santa Monica Mountains. Water from a tiny spring seeps over the trail at one point\, just below a multi-trunked bay tree. \nAlong the way we’ll bag Temescal Peak and explore some towering sandstone formations known as Cathedral Rock \nIf we have a good rain before the hike we’ll make a side trip to the Blue Gorge which adds a couple miles \nLong pants and long sleeves recommended \nDirections\nWe will be meeting at the top of Reseda Blvd. Take 101 freeway and exit Reseda Bl. in Tarzana. Drive south toward the end of Reseda and park on street. There is a fee to park in the park. To avoid the fee park outside the yellow line and walk up to the top Reseda \nBe careful when exiting the area – there is a stop-sign camera[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,600 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN.  SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Wildlife Tunnel Loop - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate – 3 miles\, 1000′ gain. \nThis hike is relatively short\, but the middle portion is a rugged and continuous incline for 1 mile with about 700′ of gain. Even though we’ll be taking this trail at the pace of a social hike\, beginners may will find this hike to be too hard. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until we reach the wildlife tunnel. \nThis is a tunnel underneath the CA-118 freeway\, built so that animals can cross. We’ll regroup here\, then continue up a strenuous and rugged climb for 1 mile until we reach the Rocky Peak Fire Rd. We’ll regroup again\, then turn left for 500′ until we reach the Hummingbird Trail. \nWe’ll find a couple large rocks and a bench there. We’ll have a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, then head down the Rocky Peak Fire Road until it ends at the CA-118 freeway. We’ll then cross the freeway back to our cars. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves take on a greyer color. \nDirections:\nRocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike:\nDistance: 3 miles\, 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 1000′\nDifficulty: Intermediate.\nSee “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781).\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes if leashed\, per State law\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free\, south side of CA-118\nTrail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and rugged water path.\nPurpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Conejo Valley’s Changing Climate: Current Threats & Paths Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual presentation by conservation ecologist Dr. Sean Anderson who will discuss the threat of climate change to the Conejo Valley\, and what we can do about it\, in the kickoff presentation of the Conejo Open Space Foundation’s (COSF) 2022 Speaker Series. This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday March 2nd at 7:00 pm. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (how to do this is described below) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so we recommend you sign up immediately! \nAccording to Dr. Anderson\, we are living through an era of unprecedented environmental change in an area experiencing some of the greatest climatic transformations in North America. The Conejo Valley is now burning more frequently\, experiencing drier dries and wetter wets\, and seeing species fade away. While these and related changes are disturbing and sobering\, we are also ground zero for a host of approaches to building a more sustainable community which provide the seeds of hope. He will discuss the current state of affairs of our Conejo Valley region and ways out of the darkness in this presentation with ample time for questions and discussion. \nDr. Anderson is a broadly trained ecologist and conservation biologist who works on a variety of coastal zone management issues across California\, Louisiana\, the South Pacific\, and Middle East. He chairs the Environmental Science and Resource Management Program at California State University Channel Islands and is an elected or appointed member of numerous state\, federal\, and international governmental and scientific advisory boards. His energetic\, innovative\, and award-winning teaching and conservation efforts are often covered in the popular press and spawned the eponymous “Sean Anderson” character (played by Josh Hutcherson) in Warner Brother’s Journey to the Center of the Earth film franchise. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to \nhttps://cosf.org/events/meetup/ \nand fill in the form. While this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.\nThe address is not the address of the hike\, but a nearby address that should get you to pass by the trailhead. \nThis route would be classified as fit-beginner\, if not for an extended incline that runs for almost a mile in the middle of the hike. It is a fire road with a continuous climb. Fit beginners should be OK on this hike\, although they may wish to take several breaks during the middle ascent. \nWe’ll be stopping at various points to regroup and this is not a conditioning hike. It is a social hike. \nWe will start by heading the back way from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot and around to an asphalt road. Then we’ll make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, where we’ll head for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know were it is\, for a snack share social event for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we’ll continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the trail head parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted as part of the description. \nInteresting Notes: \nTurkey Mullein \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 5 miles\nGain: 800\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. It is a fire road incline of about 1 mile.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes. Leash as required by law.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nThis description has a picture of the route. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the 2/3 point along the hike. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections: \nWhere of Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101:\nNorth CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.\nRight (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.\nRight (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.\nRight at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27:\nWest CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.\nLeft (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.\nCross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot.\nTrailhead at the opposite corner. \nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130\nAddress of a nearby house: 572 Bannister Way\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065. \nArrive early\, because sometimes the parking lot gets full. If this happens\, we’ll need another 15 minutes to carpool from a nearby parking lot. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:SCANDINAVIA NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE
DESCRIPTION:For all the info and to sign up\, go to www.1000treks.com \nYou have been dreaming about this for a long time! Let’s make it happen and let’s go see the Northern Lights in an fun-packed adventure\, visiting three countries in one of the beautiful places in world: Scandinavia. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS AND TO SIGN UP: https://www.1000treks.com/trips/scandinavia-northern-lights-adventure \nHighlights: \n– Visit 3 Scandinavian countries: Finland\, Sweden and Norway. \n– See the Northern Lights from a GLASS IGLOO! That’s right! You’ve seen the pictures online and now you have the chance to actually do it! \n– Have the chance to spend a night in the Arctic Snow Hotel\, a hotel made entirely of ice and snow! \n– Have 11 chances to see the Northern Lights in some of the best places in the world. We will be all-but-guaranteed to see the Aurora not only once\, but several times. Here are some of the unique and amazing ways in which we will see the Lights: \n– From Abisko Sky Station in Sweden\, where we will take a chairlift to what is possibly the best single spot on the planet to see the Northern Lights. \n– From the Lofoten Islands\, considered by many as the most beautiful background in the world for the Northern Lights. \n– While riding an Electric Snowmobile \n– On sled pulled by reindeer. \n– On a sled pulled by huskies. \n– While Floating on a frozen lake wearing a thermal floating suit. \n– While horseback riding surrounded by snow. \n– Snowshoeing through the Laplandish wilderness. \n– On a cruise on the Barents Sea \nWe will also do some amazing and unique activities and have some amazing experiences unique to Scandinavia\, such as: \n– Visit a husky farm and drive your own husky sled \n– Visit and take city tours of Helsinki\, the capital of Finland\, and Oslo\, the capital of Norway. \n– See a real unearthed Viking ship! \n– Take an overnight train from Helsinki to the Finnish Lapland in your own cabin with a bed and shower. A very cool and unique European experience! \n– Take a full day tour and sail on a real icebreaker \n– Go Ice fishing \n– Experience a snow sauna (that’s right!) and a snow Jacuzzi \n– Go on a Finnish sauna where you can go on a sauna\, come out and dip in frozen lake \n– Go Ice climbing \n– Ride a fatbike on the snow \n– Go Ice Karting. \nThese activities and locations are all absolutely amazing. However\, this trip will be even more amazing because we timed it in order to maximize our chances to see the Northern Lights. Displays of the Northern Lights do tend to intensify around the equinox months of March and September because the magnetic fields of the Earth and the Sun’s solar wind are more likely to be in sync. There are no guarantees\, but even stronger displays are therefore more likely around the spring equinox\, which be on March 19. March also tends to be the winter month with the clearest skies. New moon is March 24\, which means not only we will be getting the darkest skies of the month\, but also the ski will be very dark on the 19th. No promises\, but are likely to see some of the most amazing Northern Lights spectacles of the season during our travel dates. \nCLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS AND TO SIGN UP: https://www.1000treks.com/trips/scandinavia-northern-lights-adventure

SUMMARY:ZUMA Creek
DESCRIPTION:Don’s crazy routes are what VHC is known for. This was one of his favorites and he usually posted it this time of year around his birthday. I can’t think of a better way to remember and honor him than by finally doing the whole route again. Now that we have some water\, be prepared to get more than just your feet wet! Rock scrambling water lovers only 🙂 \nCar shuttle so be sure to arrive on time. \nWe’re honoring Don and the trails he loved by doing the hikes that he sought out and did so much research on to give everyone such a unique experience. It’s for these experiences that we followed Don\, no questions asked. These aren’t the typical ordinary paths that everyone else follows. These are signature Don T. hikes. They’re off the beaten path\, exploratory\, no name\, forgotten trails that few have dared to seek. Some of these trails are more traveled than others but they all have a touch of Don’s adventurous spirit that remains. We can’t ever replace Don but can remember him and his sense of adventure by following his footsteps\, just like we always did. This write-up is his: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 5.3 miles \nElevation Gain: 1400 feet \nLevel: 9 out of 10\, scenery factor: priceless \nThe Trail: Single track\, rock & boulder hopping\, scrambling\, trailblazing and some bushwhacking. PO avoidance. \nTime: 5-7 hours (How can only 5 miles take so long? You’ll find out.) \n \nThe Plan \nDon’t let the mileage fool ya this is a beautiful\, very RUGGED and STRENUOUS hike through Lower Zuma Canyon\, Upper Zuma Canyon\, and Newton Canyon. There is poison oak everywhere in this canyon so you’ll be determining how sensitive you are to it if you don’t already know. I’d definitely recommend a thorough post hike scrubbing with one of the many PO products on the market. This is a car shuttle (one-way) hike where we start the hike near PCH and end up about 4 miles north of PCH on Kanan Dume Rd. It involves some BUSHWHACKING and mostly CLIMBING OVER BOULDERS. Good balance and rock climbing skills are helpful. Also\, depending on water flow\, you can count on getting your feet wet. \nThe hike begins around open fields\, sycamore trees and laurel sumac bushes. The canyon then narrows and there are oaks and eucalyptus trees along a creek. A good portion of the hike is BOULDERING and some CLIMBING over huge sandstone boulders along Zuma Creek. We’ll stop for a lunch about about 2/3 of the way into our route where Edison Rd intersects Zuma creek. While the trail up to this point will have been a bit of a challenge this is really where the fun starts. Towards the end of the hike\, there’s a steep hill to climb (possibly crawl) up. \nTHIS HIKE TAKES A LOT OF ENERGY!!! (mostly due to climbing up and around the boulders). \nCheck the Weather (http://www.weather.com/weather/today/Malibu+CA+90265?lswe=90265&from=searchbox_localwx) \nBring Lunch. \nRain does not cancel. \n \nThe Area \nMy recommended Poison Oak remedy. Apply “Ivy Off” before the hike. Have a damp wash cloth with pre applied grease cutting dish soap on it in a zip lock. Wash exposed areas at the last water crossing before climbing out of the canyon. Shower with cold water and more dish soap ASAP. \nDirections \nWe’ll meet at the Backbone Trail Trail Head parking on Kanan Dume. \nFrom PCH: go north on Kanan Dume Rd. Kanan Dume is west of Pepperdine\, west of Latigo Canyon Rd\, and east of Trancas Canyon Rd. Go about 4.1 miles. It will be on the left just after the first tunnel. \nFrom the 101 (Ventura Freeway): go south on Kanan Dume Rd. Pass Mulholland and Latigo Canyon Rd. On Kanan you’ll go through two tunnels. The trail head will be on the right just before the third tunnel. \nFrom here we will drive to PCH\, turn right and take another right on Bansall Dr. Take Bansall to the end to start the hike. \n******************************************************* \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

There we will cross a ridge to take Josephine Peak Road up to the 5\,558-foot summit and pull in expansive views north and west over Big Tujunga Canyon and southwest out of the mountains toward downtown Los Angeles and surrounding cities. \nWe’ll return via the wide Josephine Peak Fireroad\, the Nature’s Canteen Trail and a bit of Hwy for a 8 mile loop with about 2\,700 ft total ascent. The hike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the hike rating guide: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nThis is my first time in the area and descriptions are based on other people’s hikes. My research indicates no Adventure Pass is needed. \n**DIRECTIONS** \nWe’ll park and meet at the Colby Canyon trail head. There is additional parking beyond the trailhead \n**To get to the trailhead:** From the 210 Freeway in La Cañada Flintridge\, take Angeles Crest Highway (CA 2) northwest for 10 miles to a dirt turnout on the left (north) side of the road\, 0.8 miles past Clear Creek Information Center. Colby Canyon Trail begins from the left (west) side of the turnout.

SUMMARY:Potrero – All paved – Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.75 miles\, 700′ gain. Easy Intermediate.\nDo not park on Potrero else risk getting a ticket. You need a permit to park on this street. \nThis hike is a great trail when it might be muddy because almost the entire hike is on an asphalt path through a huge state park (> 20 sq miles). \nThere is an extended incline on the return. \nSince the elevation gain is low and the route is paved\, we’ll be likely hiking a little faster than typical. It’s a little more than 8 miles to go all the way to the ocean. \nAt the 2.9 mile mark\, we’ll find a picnic table 350′ off to the side\, where we’ll stop and have a social event for about an hours before heading back the way we came. There are no turns on this hike\, so as long as you stay on the asphalt path\, you really can’t get lost. \nDirections:\n4161 Potrero Rd.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320\n34.156636\, -118.962989 \nNote that when turning left at the dead end to continue on Potrero Rd.\, the sign at the intersection will say S. Reina\, but it is actually only that street if you go right\, and to the left\, it is a continuation of Potrero Rd. \nFrom the west: 101-S\, Exit 48B Wendy Dr.\, turn right.\nFrom the east: 101-N\, Exit 47C Wendy Dr.\, turn left.\nSouth on Wendy Dr. until it deadends at Potrero Rd.\nRight on Potrero Rd. for 0.5 miles.\nLeft to stay on Potrero Rd. (it is Reino if you turn right) for 0.5 miles.\nTurn right on Pinehill Ave. and park. \nWalk 800 feet back to the intersection of Potrero Rd. and Big Sycamore Canyon Rd.\nDo not park on Potrero Rd. \nThe Hike:\nDistance: 5.9 miles.\nGain: 700′\, mostly on the return.\nDistribution: The return section has an extended incline.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Asphalt path.\nTrail Variations: Rolling stroll with an extended incline.\nDuration: 3.5 hours.\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, along the way at the start.\nParking: Free along Pinehill Ave. No parking on Potrero\, it is for residents with a permit only. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nHosting\nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. Navigation: GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK). \nThis hike is out-and-back on an asphalt path\, While it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace\, keep in mind if you get ahead\, you must know where we are stopping. \n[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions/)\n[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)
