SUMMARY:Jackson Lake Loop (Courtesy of Paul Taylor)
DESCRIPTION:This is a beautiful loop hike through the pines just north of the Angeles Crest Hwy\, East of Vincent Gap\, and West of the Big Pines Hwy Junction. The hike begins at the Jackson Lake picnic area and quickly ascends as it heads southwesterly towards the PCT\, then east paralleling the old paved Grassy Hollow bypass to the Jackson Flat campground. It then continues easterly to cross Big Pines Hwy and down the very beautiful Cedar Canyon\, site of old campground getaways and a few stone cabins. Then up out of the canyon and back to Jackson Lake. \nThe Numbers:\nDistance: 11.2 mi\nElevation Gain: 2238 ft\nRating: 6-7/10\nTrail: Single track with some fire road.\nParking: Park in the Jackson Lake parking area. ADVENTURE PASS IS REQUIRED. PLEASE CARPOOL!!! \n*** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \n*** \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 8+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \n*** \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Bulldog Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/bulldog-loop \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nYour in for a treat if you have never hiked this trail. Will be starting our hike out of Malibu Creek State Park. Will be passing through the Mash and Planet of the Apes filming locations. Will also be taking some side trails to see both Century Lake and Rock Pond so expect our hike to be closer to 16 miles and our elevation gain closer to 3200-3400 ft. Will eventually come onto the Bulldog trail and will start our huffing and puffing (that will be me) there. The trail will take us to the a portion of the Backbone trail which is one of the most unige sections of the Backbone. Will be going up and on some of the rock formations (no climbing required) It will feel and look like you’re now in AZ or New Mexico. Will also take a quick side trail (if I can remember it) to Jim Morrison’s (from the Doors) secret spot where he wrote all his music. Will finally start our descent down a Canyon on the other side of the Mountain were we will start looping back. Some reviews stated it was hard to find the trail back at the last portion to there cars so they walked a short distance on the road but we will try to stay on trails only but just noted incase. We are also gonna start our hike out of Malibu Creek State Park as it accommodates more vehicles and the starting point on AllTrails only accommodates about 8 cars and it is a very popular spot as it has no fee. Malibu Creek State Park is a $10 fee. If you would like to find road parking which is free or start at the AllTrails spot please just make your way into MCSP and will be waiting at the restrooms next to the parking lot. Please note this is a hard trail and not suited for beginner hikers. I have attached the AllTrails link for pics\, and stats: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/california/bulldog-loop?mobileMap=false&ref=sidebar-static-map \nTrail loop\nMiles closer to 16\nElevation Gain about 3200-3400 ft\nRated hard\nDogs unfortunately not allowed in MCSP\nParking paved lot $10 fee\, road and alternate dirt lots in the area are free but fill up fast \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike \nLiability Disclaimer: \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. SUMMARY:Dragon's Back Scramble to Cathedral\, Arlington and La Cumbre
DESCRIPTION:Scramble lovers only! This one has been on my list for a while. Full disclosure – I have not done this route before. There are different options on the scramble up so we will look for the one that best suits the group. Limiting to those I’m comfortable climbing with since it will be a long day on the rocks. There will be almost 2000′ of gain in the second mile so be sure to read the write up to know what you’re signing up for. \nNOT FOR BEGINNERS! \nNO SWEEP!! \nSTATS \nDistance: ~9 miles \nElevation: >3400 \nLevel: 9/10 \nTrail: SCRAMBLING!! Single track\, bushwhacking\, route finding \nDuration: 7+ hours\, bring snacks and/or lunch \nParking pass/fee: NO \nCome prepared!! Bring: \nPLENTY OF WATER – bring more than you think you’ll need \nELECTROLYTES \nSNACKS/LUNCH \nSUN PROTECTION – this is an exposed ridge \nGLOVES \nPOLES \nTHE PLAN \nThis is known as one of the toughest hikes around but worth the spectacular views. It is an exposed scramble and not recommended for those not comfortable with this type of terrain. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Electrolytes are also a good idea. Gloves\, poles and long sleeves/pants may also be helpful. \nWe’ll follow the paved road through the lower part of Mission Canyon. It will wind through chaparral and over boulders. Once we reach a small rock outcropping\, we’ll have a view of Seven Falls – something to look forward to on another day. The trail heads steeply up the ridge through interesting sandstone formations to the summit of Arlington Peak. From here\, our next peak is visible. We’ll take a use trail off the north side of Arlington along a ridge to reach Cathedral Peak. There will be class 3 scrambling but this area should have good handholds. Lunch break will likely be somewhere along the way. \nThe trail to La Cumbre Peak is overgrown and may be difficult to follow. From the summit of Cathedral\, we will drop down across rocky ledges towards the saddle between Cathedral and La Cumbre. We’ll look for another use trail to take to the summit of La Cumbre where we’ll take a short break and regroup before heading back down. \nDirections: From downtown Santa Barbara\, take State St to Mission Blvd and turn right. Follow Mission Blvd to the Santa Barbara Mission. Drive up Mission Canyon Rd and turn right. After several hundred yards\, near the fire station\, turn left. Continue up Mission Canyon. At the fork in the road\, take the left fork up Tunnel Rd and continue several miles to the end. Parking is available on the right side of the road. \nCarpool/Caravan: please post a comment or arrange a private carpool\, if you’d like. Park and rides along the 101 fwy are options for meeting locations. I will likely be coming from the Goleta area so won’t be available to meet but you can message me if you need help arranging a ride. \n**************************\n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. SUMMARY:Mountain E-bike ride - Coral Canyon and Mesa Peak Motorway/BBT
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nWe’ll be going on a route that many of us have hiked\, but this will be the first time we’re biking it. We’ll start where the Mesa Peak motorway intersects Coral Canyon and head south. This is a fire road along the crest of the mountains above Malibu. It’s all dirt. We’ll also do a short trek to Mesa Peak which is an extra 8/10ths of a mile. \nWhen we get back to the start point\, we may also make an optional extra trip towards the top of Bulldog motorway and possibly beyond. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: We’ll all meet at 9 am at the intersection of Coral Canyon and Mesa Peak Motorway. Note that Mesa Peak Motorway is a dirt road. \nPARKING: PLAN A is to park along the road near the intersection of Mesa Peak motorway and Coral Canyon. This is because Google seems to think that you can’t go any farther than that on Coral Canyon.\nHowever\, if you can go farther\, do so and we’ll meet at the parking lot about a quarter mile farther on Coral Canyon. The paved road ends before you get to that spot but the dirt road portion is pretty short. \nDISTANCE: 9+ miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 800 feet \nDURATION: 4 hours \nLEVEL: Mountain biker able to keep up with slow e-bikers \nMY CELL # IS: 818-307-6460

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon - Hawk Lollipop - Easy Intermediate\, beginner option
DESCRIPTION:**5.3 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy-Intermediate**\n**2.5 miles\, 100′ gain\, Beginner** \nWe start by crossing a bridge into a wooded area and continue down a relatively flat path alongside a stream. After about a mile\, we’ll come to a junction. \nFor those that want the full hike\, we’ll turn right and complete a 3 mile loop with 500′ of gain\, stopping just before the end of the loop for a social event at the picnic table on the left. \nThe social event that will last 60 minutes\, sharing snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFor those that want to keep it beginner\, pass the junction and continue for 1/4 mile and no gain. That same picnic table will be on the right. \nFor the return\, we continue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. \nHike Distance: 5.3 miles\, Beginner option is 2.5 miles.\nGain: 600′\, Beginner option is 100′.\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate/Easier option is beginner.\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road.\nTrail Variations: The first mile is mostly flat.\nAll of the trail is well groomed and not rugged.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at trailhead\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in lot next to trail head. \n**What to bring:**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \n**Hosting** \nRoute: The host knows the route. The route is posted as a photo with this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n**Interesting Notes** \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \n*Wild Oats* \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \n*Red Brome* \nGrass like with thorny appearing tops. A sub-species of foxtail chess. Can lead to flash fires. Winter fires don’t kill the seeds. \n**Directions:** \nHill Canyon Trailhead\n10241 Hill Canyon Road (address is before trailhead\, continue to gravel lot on left)\nSanta Rosa Valley\, CA 93012\nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.226495\, -118.930374 \nFrom CA-118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23 south.\nExit 19 Tierra Rejada Rd.\, turn right (west) for 0.5 miles\nLeft (south) on Moorpark Rd. for 1.4 miles.\nRight on Santa Rosa Rd. for 3.7 miles.\nLeft on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-101 (from Camarillo and farther west):\nExit Santa Rosa Rd. north for 4.9 miles.\nTurn right (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-23 and CA-101 (from Thousand Oaks):\nNorth on CA-12 for 3.1 miles.\nExit 16 Sunset Hills Blvd. and left (west) for 0.9 miles.\nLeft (west) on E. Olsen Rd. for 0.8 miles.\nRight (north) on N. Moorpark Rd. for 1.9 miles.\nContinue on Santa Rosa Rd. west for 3.7 miles.\nTurn left (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.\nParking in gravel lot on left. \nParking can be very tight because it is also popular with bicyclists. Car pooling suggested\, because it would be sad for someone to not be able to hike because there isn’t any place to park. \n**[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions)** \n**[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous)**

DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nI’m planning on doing a little exploring in the Chilao area near Newcomb’s Ranch. The goal is to take a short cross country side route to the Bell Hartman Mine which I’ve been to before as well as some trails in the Chilao area including a steep rocky trail to Mount Mooney. We might follow a canyon that feeds Alder Creek if time permits. There are pools\, most likely dry this time of the year\, that will be my final objective. After that we can stop off at Panera Bread for lunch in La Canada.\nAn Adventure Pass will be needed to park at Chilao – so we need to make sure that every car taken up there has one. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 6:30am at the Woodland Hills Meetup location. Those who want to carpool from Woodland Hills\, can meet me at the corner of Leonora and Ponce Avenue. Ponce is the first street east of Fallbrook. We can park on Ponce which is not in front of any houses.\nIF MEETING HERE\, LET ME KNOW.\nSEE MAP SITE BELOW\n[https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’04.0%22N+118%C2%B037’16.0%22W/@34.1677751\,-118.6216512\,228m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1677741!4d-118.6211043](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B010’04.0%22N+118%C2%B037’16.0%22W/@34.1677751\,-118.6216512\,228m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.1677741!4d-118.6211043) \nALTERNATE MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 7:15 am at the meetup location on Hwy. 2 in La Canada. Then\, about 5 miles in\, you see Baldy\, Claremont\, Upland\, Rancho and much further. But this will not be a walk in the park this is definitely gonna kick our butts when we’re done. But worth the views the challenge and the accomplishment. This is also an excellent training hike. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 5:30 am) I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/san-dimas-canyon-to-sunset-peak-radio-towers \nTrail out and back\nMillage 18.5+\nElevation Gain closer to 5\,000\nRated Hard (not recommended for beginners)\nDogs allowed but most be conditioned for a harder longer hike\nParking free paved lot across from trailhead Adventure Pass is required you can get one at REI or Big 5 Sporting Goods $5 for a day pass or $30 for a year pass \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike. This is a longer harder hike extra water\, food and electrolytes is recommended \nWe will follow Jim’s Golden Rules… \n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please wait at every junction and split for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring your face covering and all essentials needed for a hike. As this is a long hike you’ll need extra water\, snacks ect… \nAnd last… The Organizer\, Assistant Organizer\, Event Organizer and Event Host in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest….

SUMMARY:Los Padres - Mother's Day Hike with Potluck Picnic stop
DESCRIPTION:**3.5 miles\, 700′ gain\, Easy Intermediate.**\nEasy Option: 2.4 miles\, 340′ gain\, Fit Beginner. \nHappy Mother’s Day to all beings who have a motherly heart!\nLet’s embrace this opportunity and enjoy a potluck hike with the beautiful Mother nature and great friends. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and climb up to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench at the top. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to a picnic table\, we’ll stop for a social event. Let’s call it the “Giant’s Picnic Table” because of the thick pieces of wood used. \n**Easy Option:** In the reverse direction as the rest of the group\, go 350′ to the end of Los Padres Dr.\, left on S. Moorpark Rd. for 1000′. Enter the trail and follow it for about a mile. It will curve left and you will arrive at the social event. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nWe’ll [share snacks and drinks](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map posted with description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \nHike Distance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 700′\nDistribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Loop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \n**Hosting** \n*Route:* The host knows the route. A pic of the route [LINK](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/f/5/6/highres_501944886.jpeg) \n*Navigation:* Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \n*Hike type:* Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops:*\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \n**Interesting Notes** \nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \n*[Yucca](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/f/5/9/highres_501944889.jpeg)* \nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \n*[Wild Cucumber](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/f/5/c/highres_501944892.jpeg)* \nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \n**Directions** \nLos Padres Trailhead\n15 Los Padres Dr.\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101:\nWest of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. Moorpark Rd.\nSouth on Moorpark Rd. north for 1000 ft.\nLeft on Los Padres Dr.\nAfter 200 ft\, trailhead on the right.\nPark on the street. \n[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions/)\n[Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)

SUMMARY:Talopop - Suitable for fit beginners
DESCRIPTION:**Fit Beginner\, 4.1 miles\, 720′ gain.**\n**Easier route: 3.9 miles\, 500′ gain.** \nIs it Talepop or Talopop? Maps and signs that I have seen\, use the 2nd spelling\, but a lot of references use the other. \nWe’ll meet in front of the facilities building at the center of the park. This is a lollipop hike. \nSome of the hike is fire road\, and a lot of the hike is single-track. Some has complete exposure to the sun\, and some is through shaded wooded areas. \nWe’ll head behind the facilities building in the center and head left down the Las Virgenes Trail. After 1/3 mile\, the trail turns 90 degrees\, we continue on the easier route for 1/10th mile instead of taking the trail that climbs the hill. \nAfter\, we cross the dry creek bed where a bridge used to be and come to a fire road. \n*Easier Route:* For those that want the slightly easier route\, turn left. Continue for 1.2 miles\, turning right\, and continuing on this path straight for 0.3 miles to the social event. \n*Regular Route:* Turn right and it becomes the Talopop Trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1.8 miles until it dead ends at a fire road\, Liberty Canyon Trail. There\, we’ll wait for others to catch up\, and we can share some beverages and/or snacks before continuing. \nWe’ll turn left and after 1/3 mile\, the trail dead ends again at Las Virgenes Fire Road. We’ll turn left again and travel 1.1 miles where we’ll hit another junction\, turning right back onto Las Virgenes Trail for the final 0.4 mile return\, making a left at the split right behind the facilities building. \n**Interesting Notes:** \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \n*[Black Sage](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/5/d/5/highres_501354741.jpeg)* \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \n[California Sagebrush](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/5/c/f/highres_501354735.jpeg) – Artemesia Californica \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nAn infusion can be made for an insect repellent. \n**Directions:** \nTalopop\nJuan Bautista de Anza Park\n3701 Lost Hills Road\nCalabasas\, CA 91301 \n*From the 118*\nWest to CA-23 south\nCA-23 south for 7.4 miles\nUS-101 east for 9.5 miles\nExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.\nLost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 miles\nPark on the right. \n*From the 101*\nExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.\nLost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 miles\nPark on the right. \n**The Hike**\nDistance: 4.1 miles\, 3.5 hours\, counter-clockwise\nor 3.9 miles\, out and back.\nElevation Gain: 720′ or 500′\nDistribution: Reasonably well distributed\, some of the gain on the return portion.\nShape: Lollipop or out-and-back (easier route)\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit-Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: No\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the start.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start.\nParking: Free in the paved lot\, or along the street..\nTrail: Fire Road and single track\, good condition. \n**Hosting** \n*Route:* The host knows the route. SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK (ROCK GARDEN AND WHITE MOUNTAIN)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nSANTA BARBARA COAST- SERIES OF HIKES \nJoin me on yet another CDH series as I take on the Santa Barbara Coastal Range. We’ll hike a series of trails we’ve taken before that will be interesting with views of the ocean on most of them. Starting north at Gaviota\, we’ll conclude the series in Montecito. This series is definitely meant to be more visual than physical\, thus\, less conditioning but more of a mental enlightenment. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this series offers. \nROCK GARDEN AND WHITE MOUNTAIN \nThis next trek in the Santa Barbara series will take us to The Rock Garden and White Mountain. After checking those two areas\, we’ll drop down the Tunnel trail to the Rattlesnake connector trail that will take us to our cars initially dropped off on Gibraltar Rd. We’ll do this one via a 15 minute car shuttle. This will be a 70% downhill hike consisting of 4+ miles overall. As we’re halfway down the Tunnel Trail we’ll be able to view Mission Falls. There will be some rock scrambling in THE ROCK GARDEN an extremely rocky area\, but the rest of the hike will be on a well traveled trail. After the hike\, you can join me for an optional late lunch debriefing. \nINITIAL MEETUP LOCATION\, DIRECTIONS AND TIME: The Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 6:30 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. SUMMARY:Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:**3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate.** \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a [snack-share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) **social event** at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \n**Interesting Notes** \n[Tree Tobacco](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/1/1/a/highres_502857626.jpeg) \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n[Elderberry](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/1/1/b/highres_502857627.jpeg) \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \n**Directions:**\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \n*From the 101*\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\n[Difficulty:](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781) Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \n**What to bring**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Mt. Baldy via the Ski-Hut Trail - Return via the Notch
DESCRIPTION:Hike to the summit via the Ski Hut trail and descend via the Backbone trail to the Notch and then via the service road back down to Manker Flats or take the lift\, your choice \nBring snacks for the summit and trail. \nAdvanced Intermediate Hikers. You should have Mt. Baldy Summit experience via the Backbone Trail beforehand. \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/f/2/4/600_449604356.jpeg \nStats: \nDistance: 11 miles \nElevation Gain: ~4\,000 ft. \nMax elevation : 10\,064 ft. \nRating: 7/10 Strenuous \nTrail: Looped some pavement\, fire roads\, but mostly single track and rocky trails \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks \nHiking Poles (Recommended) \nLayered clothing (can be windy & chilly at the summit) \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=91759&searchType=WEATHER) \nNOTE: \nThis is considered a high altitude hike and high altitude sickness\, AKA acute mountain sickness\, is a possibility. Good Physical health is important. The San Antonio Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail is considered the most direct route to the summit of Mount Baldy (10\,064′). This climb is considered strenuous. \nAs you approach the Manker Flat parking area you will be on a 4 lane road with a wide center divider. Parking is on both sides and in the divider. After you pass the Manker Flats campground on the right\, look for Angeles Falls Road. There is access through the divider at this point\, so you can turn left and park hopefully closer to the trail head. There is a gate across Angeles Falls road and porta potties. This is the trail head. The road up to Baldy is VERY curvy with VERY tight turns. Anybody who does not like twisty roads with dropoffs should be a passenger! \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group).

SUMMARY:Full Moon Hike to the Wishing Tree in the Verdugos with Bonus Full Lunar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:We haven’t done a full moon hike in a while and this is a good trail to do if you are a regular hiker but haven’t tried a night hike before. Turns out there’s a lot going on tonight: \nMay’s full Moon is the first supermoon of the year! A supermoon is most commonly defined as any full Moon that occurs when the Moon is at at least 90% of perigee (the point in the Moon’s orbit where it is closest to Earth). \nThis month’s full Moon coincides with a **total lunar eclipse**! \nThis eclipse begins on the night of Sunday\, May 15 \n* **Penumbral Eclipse Begins:** The Moon enters the outer edge of Earth’s shadow (called the “penumbra”) on May 15 at 6:31 P.M. PDT.\n* **Partial Eclipse Begins:** The Moon enters the darkest part of Earth’s shadow (the ”umbra”) at 7:27 P.M. PDT.\n* **Total Eclipse Begins:** Totality begins at 8:28 P.M PDT.\n* **MAXIMUM ECLIPSE:** The eclipse reaches its peak (called the “maximum”) at 9:11 P.M. PDT. This is the best time to view the total lunar eclipse! \nMay’s Moon names tend to speak to the arrival of spring and all that it entails! May’s Flower Moon name should be no surprise. The Cree names **Budding Moon** and **Leaf Budding Moon** celebrate the awakening of local flora\, which really begin to leaf out now in many areas. Similarly\, **Planting Moon** (Dakota\, Lakota) marks the time when seeds should be started for the farming season ahead. The activities of animals marked spring’s arrival\, too\, which is highlighted by the Cree names **Egg Laying Moon** and **Frog Moon**\, as well as the Oglala term **Moon of the Shedding Ponies**. All three names indicate that warmer weather is on the way! \nSunset is at 7:49 pm. Moonrise is at 7:41 pm. \nBring a flashlight and read the parking instructions below. \nTHE PLAN \nIt’s fun finding new trails and routes around the Verdugos. The Chandler Fire Road will take us winding in the hills above Burbank to the Wishing Tree. We’ll be mostly on fireroads on the way out to make it easy to navigate but the way in will include some single track and steep firebreaks. Once we arrive at our destination\, we will stop for a snack break and watch the setting sun. Bring warm layers since it tends to get windy here. Feel free to bring your own food. Drinks for yourself or to share are optional. No potluck this time around. \nThis trailhead is in a residential neighborhood so please be mindful of noise. \nSTATS (est.) \nDistance: 7 miles-ish \nElevation Gain: <2000 ft. \nRating: 5/10\, not for beginners \nTrail: Single Track\, Firebreak\, Fireroad\, Out and Back\, Very Steep Uphill Sections \nDirections: From the 5 fwy\, exit at Hollywood Way. Go north and make an immediate left on Glenoaks Blvd. You'll want the right lane because you'll make another immediate turn to go right on Hollywood Way. Follow it until it curves left into Lanark St. Make a right on Edmore Pl and find parking where it meets Olivia Terrace. Meet at the forest gate on your right. Olivia Terrace dead ends so\, if you go too far\, turn around and find parking around the bend. \n**************************\n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you're taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it's organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************
