SUMMARY:Sage Ranch Lollipop - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:**3 miles. 560′ gain\, fit beginner**\nNote the time change. This park closes at sunset\, so we try to get out by then. For this reason\, on weekdays\, I only schedule this in the summer when sunset is late. \nFree parking is limited. Carpooling recommended. \nAs of June 10 2021\, the first part of the clockwise loop was closed\, but we found a new and cooler route with a perfect place for a snack-share\, complete with picnic table. \nWe’ll head up the ramp and begin the hike counter-clockwise. This ramp will be the only significant incline\, but is still suitable for fit beginners It is paved\, runs 1/4 mile\, and about 125′ of gain. \nAs we continue\, there will be a trail junction heading to the right and behind the rocks. For this hike\, we won’t follow it and go up on the rocks to a secret area where the rock has been carved out\, because the park closes at sunset. \nWe’ll continue on the main trail and follow it the rest of the way around. When we come to a sign that says “detour” because the path forward is closed\, we’ll take the detour. \nShortly after the detour starts\, there will be a picnic table to the right. We’ll stop there for a social event. Please bring snacks and drink to share. \nThis time of year\, there can be insects. Long pants and your preferred bug spray are recommended. \nIt is a steady climb up most of the way back\, but fit beginners can handle it. It will eventually lead us back to the top parking lot. From there\, we’ll take the asphalt path and down to our cars. \nNote that we have been scolded in the past by the ranger for being on the trail after dark here\, so we’ll try to get back to our cars by dark\, else get permission. \nThis takes us through Sage Ranch Park\, with interesting rock formations all around\, a very cool overlook onto the valley at the half way point\, and even an overlook onto part of the old Santa Suzanna nuclear test facility. \n**About the parking** \nThere are two spots to park. The first (where we will meet)\, is right at the entrance along the west edge of Black Canyon Rd. This is a free gravel lot\, but parking is limited to about 30 cars. \nIf the free lots gets filled\, continue about 500′ west up a steep incline\, where there is another lot with payment required via self-pay envelopes. If you plan on parking in this lot\, bring exact change from $5-15\, as I’m not sure of the cost. \nFirst\, we’ll walk up to the upper lot. You can wait up there if you don’t want to make the climb from the lower lot. \nThe park is officially open from sunrise to sunset. Prior postings for this hike\, had this warning: If you do park in the pay lot\, be sure you return before sunset\, else risk a ticket or being locked in by a ranger. \n**Interesting Notes** \n*[Black Sage](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/9/6/c/highres_497695660.jpeg)* \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor marries well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \n*[Yerba Santa](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/9/6/f/highres_497695663.jpeg)*\nSaint Herb\, Holy Plant\, Mountain Balm. \nThe Spanish who came to early California were so impressed with the plant that they gave it the name Yerba Santa. \nLeaves were chewed to relieve dry mouth. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma\, coughs\, colds\, headaches\, and stomachaches. Infusions of Yerba Santa leaves and flowers were used to treat fevers\, coughs\, colds\, stomachaches\, asthma\, rheumatism pleurisy\, chronic bronchitis\, tuberculosis\, and to purify the blood. Heated leaves were placed on the forehead to relieve headaches and other aches and sores. \nThe sticky leaves stay in place upon the skin. Mashed leaves were applied externally to sores\, cuts\, wounds\, insect bites\, and aching muscles. Mashed leaves were also used to reduce the swelling and relieve pain caused by bone fractures. The branches and leaves were burned in steam baths to treat rheumatism and hemorrhoids. Contains chemicals that are thought to loosen mucus in the chest and may increase urination. \n**[The Hike](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/9/5/8/highres_497695640.jpeg)** \nDistance: 3 miles\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nElevation Gain: 560′\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the upper parking lot\, which we will be walking up to at the start of this hike.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start\, but you have to walk down into the picnic area to get to it.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot\, $? to park up the incline at the top\, cash only.\nTrail: Fire Road and rocky trail\, good condition. \n**What to Bring:**\n1-2 liters of water.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share]((https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:Top Of Topanga Loop
DESCRIPTION:Early posting\, need to be home by 3pm. The hike is waitlisted. Put yourself on the list and I will add you if I feel you can complete the hike at my pace safely \nDistance: 9\nElevation Gain: 2100\nRating: Intermediate/Advanced 7-10 \nTrail: Fire road\, single track\, class 1\,2 rock climbs and some street crossings. \nThe Hike\nExcellent variety\, views and exercise along this eight mile loop hike with an elevation gain of 2\,400′. The trail climbs and follows a ridge line through interesting rock formations to one of the best observation points in the Santa Monica Mountains; The Topanga Lookout. Topanga Lookout\, the former site of a fire tower\, stands above Red Rock Canyon Park and offers fine views of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Calabasas\, and the Santa Susana Mountains. \nAfter taking in the view and enjoying a break/early lunch\, we’ll follow the trail down to the shaded valley below and return to the parking area. \nDirections \nFrom the 405/101 Freeway… Exit Mulholland Dr /Valley Circle Blvd and go south on Mulholland Dr for 0.5 mi Turn Right on Valmar St for 1.2 mi Turn Right on Mulholland Hwy for 3.8 mi Left on Stunt Rd for 1.0 mi Park at turnout on Right \n*** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:National Trails Day - Hike at the Malibu Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:National Trails Day is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan’s President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors. In 1987\, the report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes\, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. The recommendation\, dubbed Trails for All Americans\, became the impetus behind several public and private parties joining American Hiking Society in launching National Trails Day® in 1993. National Trails Day is always the first Saturday in June. \nIn light of the history of NTD\, this year we’ll celebrate at the old Reagan Ranch \n \nDetails\nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow-land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Creek — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers. \n \n  \nBetween the MASH set and the ranch we’ll enjoy a short snack break at Century Lake. Part of the famous jump into the river by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paul Newman & Robert Redford) was done by stuntmen at Century Lake because the river in Colorado seen in the film wasn’t deep enough to support such a high jump. \n \nOn our return to the ranch we’ll take a side trip to a scenic vista point at the top of Lake View Trail will It will provide us a beautiful view of Malibou Lake and the surrounding mountains. Reagan was the honorary mayor of Malibou Lake in 1953. \n \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM DUE TO TERRAIN. SUMMARY:Let's meetup and hike around a movie set
DESCRIPTION:This is monthly docent led hike that happens on the first Saturday I will unfortunately will not be doing this adventure; I also have a bike ride planned. The volunteer that does this hike is very knowledgeable and familiar with the area. \nFranklin Canyon in Beverly Hills is a nature center and park full of hiking trails. This will be a unique opportunity to step onto a actual movie set with a ranger providing some behind the scenes information. I have tested out this monthly easy hike. The outing will last about two hours with minimal elevation gained/lost. Frequent stops to rest and talk will make this attractive to some people that are not ready to climb the big hills. I do THAT every Friday evening with a Sierra Club group. If you get lost\, my cell is eight one eight 348-8884.

SUMMARY:Wildwood Park - Las Flores potluck hike - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:**Fit Beginner – 4 miles\, 600′ gain**\nThe gain is well distributed\, with half being on the return. \nWe start at the Las Flores trailhead where Las Flores dead-ends at Wildwood Park\, and head west. After 1/3 mile\, the trail becomes Wildwood Canyon Trail. We continue for another 2/3 mile and cross a bridge just past the Meadows Picnic area. \nWe’ll make a left\, continuing on Wildwood Canyon Trail\, past the Tee Pee Trail\, behind Paradise Falls\, left at the split\, and after about a mile\, Wildwood Canyon Picnic area will be on the left. There will be several tables. \n**This is a pot luck picnic.** Please bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. *If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share.* We’ll share snacks and drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 60 – 90 minutes\, before heading back the way we came. \n**The Hike**\nDistance: 4 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nDuration: 4.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: Free along street. \n**What to bring**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots.\nFlashlight or headlamp (if it will be dark during any part of the event).\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \n**Hosting** \n*Route:* The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \n*Navigation:* Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \n*Hike type:* Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops:*\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \n*Group separation:* Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions**\nLas Flores Trailhead\n604 W Avenida De Las Flores\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91360 \n**Release of Liability:** https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

There will be several tables. \n**This is a pot luck picnic.** Please bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. *If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share.* We’ll [share snacks and drinks](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 60 – 90 minutes\, before heading back the way we came. \n**The Hike**\nDistance: 4 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. SUMMARY:BIKE RIDE - Temescal Canyon to Fishermans Village
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nBIKE RIDE FROM TEMESCAL CANYON TO FISHERMANS VILLAGE AND BACK \nWe’re headed to the Beach!!! We’ll be starting on the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (aka the beach bike path) at Temescal Cyn and Pacific Coast highway and heading south to the end of Washington Blvd in Venice\, checking out a bit of the Marina a bit farther up Washington Blvd and then heading to Fisherman’s Village. We’ll then retrace our route back to Temescal. We’ll likely stop for a bite to eat and/or coffee (probably both) and returning. \nIf you’re late\, get on the bike path and head South (ocean will be on your right). \nA helmet is also strongly suggested and a light jacket is also a good idea. A bike headlamp is a must as we may be returning in the dark and the last section of northbound bike path can be dangerous without a light. \nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 17000 Pacific Coast Highway\, Pacific Palisades. If you go downhill on Temescal Canyon road and cross Pacific Coast Highway\, you’ll see a small building on the right. We’ll be on the South Side of that building. \nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: Get on Pacific Coast highway. Head towards Temescal Canyon. When you come to that in intersection\, turn into the paid parking lot towards the beach or park up the hill on Temescal Canyon for free. \nIf you have trouble finding us\, call my cell# (818-307-6460). \nMEETUP DATE AND TIME: Monday June 6th at 4 PM \nPARKING FEE: Free on Temescal Cyn Rd. Probably about $9 at the beach parking lot. Not sure how late you can park in the beach lot. Make sure you ask about that before you park there. \nDISTANCE: 20 miles round trip \nDURATION: 4 hours \nELEVATION GAIN: minimal – it’s a pretty flat route \nBIKE TRAIL DESCRIPTION: A paved two lane bike path and a bike lane on Chandler Blvd. \nTHE PACE: 9 MPH on up \nLEVEL: Advanced Beginner on up \nMY CELL # IS 818-307-6460

SUMMARY:Cheeseboro Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:The gently rounded hills of Cheeseboro Canyon in the Simi Hills is older than the steeper\, more recently formed Santa Monica Mountains\, \nFor over 150 years\, ranchers made this canyon their home. Many of the native plants\, poorly adapted to heavy grazing\, were replaced with European annuals such as wild oats\, mustard\, and thistles. Despite numerous years of cattle grazing\, we can still find a variety of native plant communities\, including chaparral\, coastal sage scrub\, and riparian woodlands. \n–Cheeseboro Canyon has the largest concentrations of birds of prey nesting areas in the U.S. outside of Alaska. \n–The Valley Oak tree\, the largest oak native to the United States and possibly the world\, live in these canyons in what might be the largest southerly stand of trees left. \nOur 9-mile journey starts on the Modelo Trail\, ascending the western ridge separating Cheeseboro and Palo Comado Canyons. After a few minutes we descend into Cheeseboro Canyon. \nThen we begin a climb through a tributary of Cheeseboro Canyon\, soon reaching the Cheeseboro Ridge Trail (about 2 miles from the start). This will be a nice place for a water break and enjoy the scenery before beginning the biggest ascent of the hike. \nThe Cheeseboro Ridge Trail winds its way up the canyon wall. As we climb\, we’ll get views of the rolling terrain of the Simi Hills\, the Santa Monica Mountains\, and to the east\, if the weather is clear\, the San Gabriels. \nAfter a couple more miles we will see the Baleen Wall\, a geological formation that is one of the park’s most recognizable landmarks. Its rock outcroppings resemble the sight of a baleen whale rising from the ocean. We will take our snack break opposite the Baleen Wall overlooking the headwaters of Upper Las Virgenes Canyon creek \nAfter the break we’ll stroll to Shepherds Flat and Sulphur Springs. We may catch a whiff of rotten eggs\, indicating the presence of sulphur\, and therefore some extremely minor volcanic activity\, close to the surface. \nWe then continue down the Cheeseboro Canyon Trail making a big loop. \nHike is about 9 miles with 1\,300 feet total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT. DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\n[[go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC)](http://[go%20to:%20https//wp.me/P9MbG4-hC%5D(go%20to:%20https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC)) \nThe route has single and wide track trails. The views along the way are spectacular. Starting from Jackson Lake\, we’ll accomplish this by taking the Blue Ridge above Jackson Lake via an 7.6 mile loop with an overall gain of 1500′ along the way. \nThe Jackson Lake Trail is a high-quality singletrack snaking through the woods on the northern slope of the San Gabriel Mountains. Some of the most beautiful forest in the range can be seen along the trail\, including huge ponderosa pine\, jeffrey pine\, white fir\, live oak\, black oak\, big-leaf maple\, alder\, and willow. The black oak and big-leaf maple turn brilliant reds and yellows in the fall\, providing a photographers’ feast that includes tremendous views across the southwestern Mojave Desert.\nWest Blue Ridge provides stunning views down the East Fork San Gabriel River and across to 10\,064′ Mount Baldy \nDrivers parking at Jackson Lake will need an ADVENTURE PASS. \nNo beginners please unless you’re in top physical condition. If you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a steady pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone. \nDAY’S AGENDA and some of the features \nSTART: Once we all arrive at Jackson Lake around 7:30 a.m.\, we’ll begin our trek to the RIDGE. \nTHE RIDGE: BLUE RIDGE (around 7500′) offers awesome views into the depths of the east fork of the San Gabriel River and high mountain country as we make our way along THE TRAIL. \nTHE TRAIL: The PACIFIC CREST TRAIL is probably the most well known of all the trails on the west coast. We’ll be hiking a small portion of this trail before ditching the trail for another trail taking us back down to Jackson Lake where we’ll end this adventure. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Jackson Lake parking lot at 7:30am.\n[https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B023’32.5%22N+117%C2%B043’40.3%22W/@34.392364\,-117.7284102\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x80c3175026bd64f3:0x9d79da1f52370f32!2sJackson+Lake!3b1!8m2!3d34.3921432!4d-117.7265246!3m5!1s0x0:0xc312aa741094c4c3!7e2!8m2!3d34.3923638!4d-117.7278633](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B023’32.5%22N+117%C2%B043’40.3%22W/@34.392364\,-117.7284102\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x80c3175026bd64f3:0x9d79da1f52370f32!2sJackson+Lake!3b1!8m2!3d34.3921432!4d-117.7265246!3m5!1s0x0:0xc312aa741094c4c3!7e2!8m2!3d34.3923638!4d-117.7278633) \nDURATION: 7:30am to no later than 1:30pm. \nTERRAIN: Well defined trails \nDISTANCE: 7.6 miles miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 1500′ \nTHE PACE: A comfortable pace no faster than the slowest hiker. SUMMARY:The California Monarch Butterflies' recovery from near-extinction
DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual presentation by butterfly educator Betina Loudermilk who will discuss the factors that spurred West Coast monarch butterflies’ miraculous population recovery in 2022 from near-extinction in prior years. She will also discuss her own 7-year effort to create a [butterfly-friendly habitat](https://www.betinaslittlefarm.com/) and offer information and tips for attendees who want to do the same. This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday June 8th at 7:00 pm\, hosted by the Conejo Open Space Foundation. COSF will send instructions on how to join the Zoom webinar to people who sign up (how to do this is described below) the day before the event. The number of attendees is limited so we recommend you sign up immediately! \nHer talk\, entitled “The Monarch Miracle\,” will focus on environmental circumstances such as habitat loss and climate change that caused the butterfly population crash and what influences—human and otherwise—may have contributed to its resurgence. \nBetina is the proprietor of Betina’s Little Farm\, site of her butterfly garden\, where she conducts workshops and events for families. She taught equestrian skills for a decade at Pierce College and has also served as a naturalist at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. “My goal is to inspire people to create connectivity through their backyards for our local bugs and butterflies\,” she says. “I want to get people interested in butterfly gardening so they can help out too.” \nHeld quarterly since 2019\, the [COSF Speaker Series](https://cosf.org/events/open-space-speaker-series/) has included climate authority Dr. Sean Anderson as well as wildlife experts Dr. Dan Cooper\, Dr. Seth Riley\, Dr. Jessica Sanchez\, and the National Wildlife Federation’s regional executive director Beth Pratt. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to \n[https://cosf.org/events/meetup/](https://cosf.org/events/meetup/) \nand fill in the form. While this is a free event\, COSF suggests a donation of $10. Your support for future Speaker Series presentations and COSF’s other activities would be greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:**Beginner\, 5 miles\, 500′ gain** \nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult. There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nFrom the trail head\, we walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there is a **no dogs** allowed sign. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy that I’m told is the result of horses. \nThe landscape will change from dry to green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some snacks\, beverages\, and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. \n**Interesting Notes:** \nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \n*[Jimson Weed](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/9/6/5/highres_502386501.jpeg)* \nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nThese chemicals interfere with one of the chemical messengers (acetylcholine) in the brain and nerves. Ingesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \n*[Castor Bean](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/9/6/6/highres_502386502.jpeg)* \nOne of the most poisonous plants in the world. \nThe seeds contain ricin and are poisonous to people\, animals and insects. Ricin is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed causes skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble\, therefore\, castor oil does not contain ricin\, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. \nUsed in bone marrow transplants\, cancer therapies\, AIDS treatment\, and can selectively destroy neurons by injecting ricin into nerves. \n**Directions:** \nHappy Camp\n15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd.\nMoorpark\, CA 93021\n34.311460\,-118.866110\nIf you use this address\, we’ll be just beyond the far southeast corner of the clubhouse lot. \n*From the 118 and from the 101:*\nHead to towards the intersection of I-118 and CA-23.\nExit 19A Princeton Ave.\, turn right (north) if coming from the east\, left coming from CA-23.\nPrinceton Ave. north for 0.2 miles.\nLeft on Campus Park Dr. for 0.4 miles and continue on Happy Camp Canyon Rd. for 0.7 miles.\nFollow signs to Rustic Canyon golf course.\nPark on the right in gravel lot\, just before golf course paved lot. Do not park in the paved golf course lot\, it has a gate that closes at sunset. \n**[The Hike](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/9/6/3/highres_502386499.jpeg)**\nDistance: 5 miles\, 3 1/2 hours\nElevation Gain: 500′\n[Difficulty:](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781) Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: No. This is a park rule\, not mine. SUMMARY:Eagle Rock via Garapito
DESCRIPTION:*Waitlisted. Hike will be at “beat the heat!” pace. Put yourself on the list and I will add you if I feel you can complete at the group’s pace safely. \nDistance: <8 Out- and- back\nElevation Gain: 1750\nRating: 5/10\nNot for beginners\, no sweeper \nDon's write up\nEagle Rock\, located in Topanga SP\, is the primary attraction of this hike. It juts impressively out from the hillside\, with dramatic shear cliffs on three sides. There is easy access to the top of Eagle Rock from the trail. The usual route to Eagle Rock is via Topanga SP\, but that would be too short for our group as we’re a bit more adventurous. This hike starts from the Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park at the south end of Reseda Blvd. This will be a combination of trails and fire roads. We start off with .05 miles of fire roads and then take the Bent Arrow Trail to the Garapito Trail the remaining 3 miles to Eagle Rock where we’ll take a short break before returning on fire roads to our cars on Reseda. The Garapito Trail is where we get our bonus ab workout due to the necessity to avoid so many low branches. As usual bring ample supplies of liquid refreshment\, snacks\, sunscreen and dress accordingly depending on the weather conditions. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed in state parks \nDirections: Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park is located on the southern end of Reseda Blvd. in Tarzana\, 3.2 miles south of the Ventura Fwy. The park and parking are at the end of Reseda Blvd. There is a white line across the road to mark where the fee parking starts and an “Iron Ranger” to pay the fee. Park before the line for free. Be aware as there is a "photo-enforced" stop sign in the area. \n*** \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE\nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. By participating in any posted event\, you're taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it's organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. SUMMARY:5 Year - Hike and Picnic celebration
DESCRIPTION:**[Fit Beginner\, 3.3 mi\, 500′ gain](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)**\n**Easy Option: 1/2 mi\, flat** \nWe’ve formed a lot of strong bonds since this group was started and it has served its purpose well. Let’s get together to celebrate this. \nThis is the famous [Corriganville Park](http://www.rsrpd.org/simi_valley/trails/cooriganville_movie_ghost_town.php)\, previously the Corriganville Movie Ranch. This is not only a great place for hiking\, but there are picnic tables\, barbecues\, drinking fountains\, and bathrooms. It’s also quite historic. \nIf you have not been to Corriganville Park\, you are in for a treat. It used to be a film studio ranch. There are many placards on posts in the ground with notable facts and photos from movies filmed here. Part of the park is like hiking through an old western motion picture\, with dramatic rock formations. Parts of Tarzan were also filmed here. Estimates of the number of movies and television shows filmed there range from the hundreds to the thousands. \n**Easy Option.** 1/2 mile\, flat.\nSkip the hike. Walk to the opposite end of the parking lot from which you entered\, and continue for 1/4 mile to the pavilion. Bring your potluck items. \n**Potluck and Hike**\nWe’ll hike first. You can either leave your stuff in the car\, or carry it with you for the first 1/4 mile flat segment of the hike\, dropping it off at the pavilion as we pass it\, assuming we’ll have some that are just going to wait at the pavilion and not hike\, as is usually the case. \nAt this point\, you can skip the rest of the hike and wait at the pavilion\, or you can continue. \nThis hike is a series of segments and turns that cover most of the park. There will not be any extended inclines\, but the total hike will have about 500′ of gain and there will be 3 small hills (75 – 125 steps\, each). This will be fine for beginners but it will get the blood pumping. \nThe route planned has many turns and junctions. I may mark the direction periodically with small lines of white powder\, else there will be enough of a crowd to see where we are going. SUMMARY:Paradise Falls - The easy way
DESCRIPTION:**3.5 miles\, 650′ gain\, Fit Beginner** \nA hike to Paradise Falls is one of the most popular things to do for those visiting Simi Valley\, yet a lot of people that live nearby rarely make this fun hike or perhaps have never done it. \nThere are several paths one can take to the falls. This route is the easy way to Paradise Falls and suitable for fit beginners. \nThe waterfall is flowing fully even during our drought conditions. It is fed by urban run-off (surface water waste created by urbanization). It feeds into a small pond\, where I see people swimming and diving all the time\, even though this water is not safe or legal for either due to health risks and debris hidden below the surface. \n**[The Route](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/f/9/c/highres_502524476.jpeg)** \n*To the Main Parking Lot*\nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. We’ll take a tunnel that goes under the road and make our way to the park side of the road. We’ll turn right (west) for 1 block\, where we’ll see an entrance to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. \nWe’ll enter and make a right\, following it around past the first set of junctions\, continuing for about 1/4 mile\, and then follow it around to the left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take us to the steps to the main trail head parking lot on the right side. We’ll turn right\, going up the stairs\, and head across the lot to the entrance of the Mesa trail. \n*To the Tepee*\nWe’ll take that trail\, past the gate\, and after 2000′\, turn left on the North Tepee Trail. We’ll follow this down for 2000′ more to a large Tepee structure. We’ll regroup\, we can take a few pictures\, there’s a drinking fountain\, and we can rest a moment. \n*To the Waterfall*\nWe’ll then continue down to the Paradise Falls waterfall by following the zig-zag trail and taking a stair case down. \n*The Snack Share*\nAfter a short visit\, we’ll return a different way\, heading partly back up and across the back side of the waterfall along Wildwood Canyon trail. After about another 100 yards\, we’ll come to a couple picnic tables on the right where we’ll **[share snacks and beverages](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)**. \n*Returning Early*\nIf you head back early instead of staying for the entire social event\, you are responsible for finding your own way back\, although there is almost always someone leaving early that knows the route. Please study the map in this description. \n*Continuing with the group*\nFor this hike\, we’ll take the easiest way back. We continue on this trail and it comes to a dead end\, we make a right and then immediate left onto the Indian Creek trail. We’ll follow this all the way back to our cars\, making a right towards the end when it dead ends again. \n**Some Plants on this hike** \n*[Prickly Pear Cactus](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/f/b/2/highres_502524498.jpeg)* \nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn or scrape off needles – even stones can be used if you don’t have a knife. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \n*[Lemonade Berry](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/5/f/b/5/highres_502524501.jpeg)* \nSome saps can produce skin allergic reactions. Good kindling. Usually\, the berries are toxic. They are covered with a gooey sour (like lemon) coating. Hikers sometimes drop a seed or two into their water bottles to give the water a tang. Wide leaves\, rounded tips\, edges are smooth\, dull on back. Can only be found in the California hills. \n**Directions:**\nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nThis is not the main trailhead lot. Go to the tennis and basketball parking lot (Wildflower Playfield). \nPay attention to where it is legal to park\, and if the lot is full\, there is another lot 500′ east\, or park in the neighborhood across the street. \n**From the 118:**\nCA-118 west to CA-23.\nContinue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los Arboles\nTurn right (east) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. There will be tennis courts on the right with a parking lot. \n**From CA-23:**\nCA-23 to exit 15\, Avenida de los Arboles\nEast on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until it ends.\nTrail head on the left.\nTurn right (east) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. There will be tennis courts on the right with a parking lot. \n**The Hike:**\nDistance: 3.5miles\, 3 1/2 hrs\nElevation Gain: 650′\nPace: 2.0 mph\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: Yes – at the start\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\nParking: Free\nTrail: Double and single track\, fire road. \n**What to Bring:**\n1-2 liters of water.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp for evening hikes.\nInsect Repellent \n**[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions)**\n**[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous)**

SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Double Loop Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:**4 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate**\nEasy option: 2.5 miles\, 500′ gain. \nParking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section for 1/2 mile\, turn right\, and make a gradual climb until just before the wildlife tunnel. \nWe turn left and take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. \n**Easy Option:** Wait at the pavilion for about 35 minutes. \nThe rest of the group will continue for loop\, returning back to this same place. \nWe’ll turn right and proceed to loop through the park\, where we’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nWe’ll turn right\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a [social event](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nThe park officially closes at sunset\, so we’ll try to start heading back before dark. \n**Interesting Notes** \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \n*[California Sagebrush](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/c/1/c/highres_474967196.jpeg)* \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \n*[Purple Sage](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/c/2/d/highres_474967213.jpeg)* \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \n**Directions**\nRocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118\nSimi Valley\, CA 93065\n34.268396\, -118.636139 \n*From the 118*\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \n*From the 101 @ CA-23*\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles.\nEast I-118 for 14 miles.\nExit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.\nPark on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \n**[The Hike](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/a/0/d/4/highres_494981172.jpeg)**\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nElevation Gain: 700′\n[Difficulty:](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781) Easy Intermediate\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\, at the picnic pavilion.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes\nParking: Free\, south side of CA-118\nTrail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and fire road.\nPurpose: Social \n**What to Bring:**\n1-2 liters of water.\n[Snacks and/or beverages to share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772)\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:El Prieto\, loop
DESCRIPTION:This is another “beat the heat” pace hike\, not for beginners. Trail is well maintained\, shaded and cooler in the canyon. \nDistance: <7\nElevation Gain: we will find out \nDirections: \nOn the 210 Freeway from La Canada/Hwy 2\, take the Arroyo/Windsor exit and head north (left). Make an immediate right on Woodbury Rd. Make a left at Lincoln Ave. Drive approx one mile and turn left on W Altadena Ave. Trailhead is at the end of the street (~1/2mi). Street parking can be found past Odyssey School\, possibly between Florecita and Crestford Dr. \nFrom Pasadena/110 Fwy/605 Fwy\, exit at Lincoln Ave. Go north (right) for about a mile and a half. Turn left on W Altadena Ave and follow the directions above from there. \n*** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. By participating in any posted event\, you're taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it's organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.
