SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy ~ Gentler Hike for Thursday
DESCRIPTION:This is a gentler hike for Thursday\, we will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views north to Port Hueneme and Oxnard and west toward the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not foggy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. This is a gentler hike and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up and turn around just before going up to the monument.\nThe hike will start in SMNMRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park. It’s mostly single track and fire road. On this trail\, dogs are not invited. Please bring ample hydration.\nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1200 feet of elevation gain. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/d/4/0/event_98343392.jpeg \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/f/7/a/event_98343962.jpeg \n\nDo NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers. \nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:Beginner\, 5 miles\, 500′ gain \nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult. There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nFrom the trail head\, we walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there is a no dogs allowed sign. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy. \nThe landscape will change from dry to green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some snacks\, beverages\, and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes: \nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \nJimson Weed\nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nThese chemicals interfere with one of the chemical messengers (acetylcholine) in the brain and nerves. Ingesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \nCastor Bean\nOne of the most poisonous plants in the world. \nThe seeds contain ricin and are poisonous to people\, animals and insects. Ricin is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed causes skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble\, therefore\, castor oil does not contain ricin\, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. \nUsed in bone marrow transplants\, cancer therapies\, AIDS treatment\, and can selectively destroy neurons by injecting ricin into nerves. \nDirections: \nHappy Camp\n15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd.\nMoorpark\, CA 93021\n34.311460\,-118.866110\nNear the northeast corner of the clubhouse lot. \nFrom the 118 and from the 101:\nHead to towards the intersection of I-118 and CA-23.\nExit 19A Princeton Ave.\, turn right (north) if coming from the east\, left coming from CA-23.\nPrinceton Ave. north for 0.2 miles.\nLeft on Campus Park Dr. for 0.4 miles and continue on Happy Camp Canyon Rd. for 0.7 miles.\nFollow signs to Rustic Canyon golf course.\nPark on the right in gravel lot\, just before golf course paved lot. Do not park in the paved golf course lot\, it has a gate that closes at sunset. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 5 miles\, 3 1/2 hours\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: No. A sign half-way says no dogs. I’m not the dog enforcer\, so bring a dog at your own risk.\nRestrooms/Drinking Fountains: Yes\, inside the golf course clubhouse at the start\, but likely closed after dark.\nParking: Free in the gravel lot next to the paved golf course lot.\nTrail: Fire Road and some with powdered sand. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. They will get very dusty on this trail.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Kick off to the BKS with a retrun to Slide Moutain - this time with flowers!
DESCRIPTION:This is Part one of the new BKS (Butt Kicking Series) of hikes! *(Hikes with close to 3000′ Gain and or 10 or more miles.) \n*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes. \nReturn to Slide to Slide Mountain Fire Lookout Tower (4\,631′)\, overlooking Pyramid Lake not just for the challenge but for the flowers! \nDistance: ~ 12 miles total\, RT – Out and back style – with a touch of “Are we done yet?” \nGain: ~2400′ \nHiking Time: 5.5 hours \nRATING: Strenuous (mainly for the overall Longer Distance and the 1340′ Gain over 2 mile section). Definitely not one for Beginners! You need to be hiking regularly to enjoy this one. \nDescription: Our day starts and ends with a ~ 1.5 mile flat hike (3 of the 12 mile total) along the now abandoned Route 99 (Golden State Highway)\, the predecessor to the 5 Hwy. We follow Piru Creek\, a Native California Fishery and Wild and Scenic River\, until we reach the actual trailhead (a white gate on the left) . From the trailhead\, we catch our first glimpse of the lookout tower\, 2400′ above. \nNext comes a 1340′ “butt kicker”\, as we start from the trailhead up the steepest part of the hike (for ~ 2 miles with some service road switchbacks ). We eventually reach the saddle and can pause to enjoy a panoramic view across the Piru creek area and the Sespe Wilderness to the West\, And marvel at the Angular Angular unconformitys to the west. \nAfter catching our breath\, it’s another ~ 2 miles and 1060′ to the peak via winding through some massive Conglomerate Rocks and a a series of shallow switchbacks on the East side of the mountain\, and more on the West side\, gradually approaching the peak. Eventually the tower comes into view and after rounding a bend\, we break out at the summit and an incredible view of Pyramid Lake below. \nBring something to eat because we will have snacky time at the tower and by the time you get there you will be ready for some food for your face as you enjoy the 360 degree view. From here\, if it is clear\, we can see just about every major peak around the Northern LA area\, even Mt Baldy! \nMeet your leader:\nAt 7:45AM in front of the white gate near Frenchman’s Flat Campground\n( 34.616492\, -118.743782 ); we head up the old highway at 8:00AM sharp. \nDirections from SCV:\nGo north on the I-5\, past Castaic and exit at Templin Hwy\, Exit # 183. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp\, go under the freeway to a T junction\, then turn right. Follow this bumpy 2 lane road (Old Hwy 99) for 5 miles until it ends at a white forest service gate where there is parking (this is Frenchman’s Flat Camping area). Display your Adventure Pass in your windshield. There are bathrooms at this trailhead. \nBring:\nA snack/lunch\, water (3 liters is recommended)\, including 1L electrolytes if it is a hot day\, sunscreen\, hat\, hiking poles if you have them. \n!!! Wear layered clothing and pack a windbreaker as it may turn windy / cold at the top. Check weather forecast. Good boots with tread are a given. \nAdventure Pass: YES. Required for parking in the Angeles National Forest. 1/car for those who drive. These can be obtained at any BIG 5 Sporting Goods store; $5 for a day pass\, $30 for a year pass. \nBathrooms: Pit Toilets at the trail head and at the visitor center up on top of the mountain. \nDogs: OK \, if on leash and well behaved. Please keep the distance\, lack of shade\, and your dog’s stamina in mind. \nLeader(s): Paul H and Gary S

SUMMARY:Hike to the Hollywood Sign/Bronson Caves - Mt. Lee Summit
DESCRIPTION:I’m very excited to plan another hike up to the Hollywood Sign and the Bronson Caves. \nThis will take us to the summit of Mt. Lee where we will get the best views of the Hollywood Sign. The total mileage for our journey will be approximately 7 miles. Our elevation change should be about 1\,200 ft. \nWe will meet at the end of Canyon Drive which is where we will park. There will be parking options right at the address listed\, on the left\, and also right before that lot on a dirt patch. \nWe will be on Canyon Drive to start on up the canyon. Once we hit Mulholland Trail we will head left and this will take us to views of the front of the Hollywood Sign. After this we’ll go a short ways up the spiral road up to the summit of Mt. Lee. Once we’ve reach the top\, we’ll head back down to where we started. Once we get to the end\, we’ll go on a slight detour to the Bronson Caves. This is the Batcave from Batman. How cool is that?! \nBring lots of water\, sunscreen\, snacks/food\, jacket\, and anything else you think you’ll need. \nHere is the address (this will take you to the parking lot): 2974 Canyon Drive\, Los Angeles\, CA 90068 \nDogs are allowed on this hike. \nThere is a bathroom in the parking lot. \nPlease ask any questions you may have.

SUMMARY:PCT South via Tehachapi Willow Springs Road
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/pct-south-via-tehachapi-willow-springs-road \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nGot a treat for ya…another day trip….to the PCT in the Tehachapi Mountains! This part of the PCT is unique as it’s known for wild horses\,wild burros\, Joshua trees\, wild flowers but above all the windmills! Yes this section of the PCT will take us through the windmills. This desert landscape can get hot so a no can do during summer. With the recent winter weather the trail was covered with and up to waist high snow. And lower parts of the trails were just mud. So we should be hitting the trail after the winter conditions and before the summer with hopes of catching a glimpse of the wild horses. Not as well known trail (except for the Thru PCT hikers) so we should have most of this hike to ourselves. This trail is not to long so with our drive will be continuing our hike on the PCT to get in more mileage so expect at least a 12 mile day with about 1800 elevation gain. Afterwards Kim has found a 5 star (on Yelp) restaurant. this is a casual dining atmosphere just rated high for the food. It is a Indian flare with american food as well. My truck is filling up fast for carpooling so please message me if you need a ride or if you can take others and follow us from the carpool site..Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 8:00 am) I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, stats and photos. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/pct-south-via-tehachapi-willow-springs-road \nTrail out and back\nMiles around 12.0\nElevation Gain around 1800\nParking side road\nDogs allowed \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n\nHike your own hike\nPlease stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up\n\nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike\n(water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer: \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are of your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limit. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. SUMMARY:Hike at Caspers Wilderness Park - Bell Canyon + Oso Trail
DESCRIPTION:The hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. It is a nice and remote hike\, so you are really out there in the wilderness. \nIf you have any questions regarding the park or the trails we will be on\, please let me know! \nHere is a link to the park map: http://ocparks.com/civicax/filebank/blobdload.aspx?BlobID=8164 \nThe address is: 33401 Ortega Hwy. San Juan Capistrano\, CA 92675 \nDogs are not allowed at this park. \nParking is $5\, unless you have an OC Parks Annual Permit. If you hike a lot\, it’s totally worth it: http://ocparks.com/about/fees/pass You can buy the pass at the park.

SUMMARY:EBiking through the poppy fields
DESCRIPTION:We’ll do a 20+ mile ride on the dirt roads that are next to the Antelope Valley Poppy Preserve. Right now\, this is possibly the best place to see poppies. Though I’ve only ridden on Avenue G once\, it looks like a great place to start. Hence this is also exploratory. You’ve been warned. \nThe route is a tentative route. If we see something interesting off route\, we’ll go check it out as we usually do. \nWARNINGS: It can get very very windy and very cold there. With 20 mph winds being common\, it could be extremely difficult with a regular bike. Bring layers and real gloves to be on the safe side. Also enough water as we’ll be in the desert. Plus there’s the standard dangers of poppy fields: evil witches\, flying houses and monkeys\, etc. \nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube and have tires inflated for dirt road riding. \nMEETUP LOCATION W Ave G & Lancaster Rd\, Lancaster California\nat 10:00 am \nPARKING FEE: There is free parking along the road. We’ll be parked amongst the folks who couldn’t get into the main parking lot at the Preserve. \nRESTROOMS: NO. There are restrooms at the Poppy Preserve but that could be difficult to get to with the long entry lines. \nMEETUP TIME: 10:00 a.m. \nDURATION: 5 HOURS \nDISTANCE: 20+ miles \nROUTE: TBD \nELEVATION GAIN: ?? \nPACE: No faster than the slowest member \nTERRAIN: Really nice dirt roads. \nLUNCH: Azteca Mexican Restaurant\, 47904 90th St W Antelope Acres\, Lancaster\, CA \nMY CELL# IS: 818-307-6460

SUMMARY:Upper Stunt High Trail To Saddle Peak ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:This hike begins at Upper Stunt High Trail\, a couple hundred feet to the right on the other side of the street from the parking lot. The trail winds upward gradually over switchbacks\, giving way as the trail heads up to a dramatic rocky overlook with striking views of the Pacific\, Stunt Ranch State Park\, Calabasas Peak\, and Old Topanga Canyon. There are also longer vistas northwest into Ventura County and east to the San Fernando Valley. We will see beautiful wooded areas and increasing views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Stunt Ranch State Park as we ascend. We eventually reach the Saddle Peak Trail via Backbone Trail and soon begin an easterly ridgeline walk high above the Pacific. This route will take us along and above spectacular tilted and pocketed sandstone formations\, with dramatic views of the mountains and ocean as we proceed. There will be a little rock-scambling close to the top. We will take a short break at Saddle Peak and return back the same way. \nIt is about 5 miles round-trip with 1100 feet of elevation gain. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 – exit at the Las Virgenes Road exit and go south (toward the ocean). Drive 3 miles to Mulholland Highway and make a left turn. Continue 4 miles to Stunt Road and turn right. SUMMARY:Encinal Canyon to the Top of the World ~ 8 mile Intermediate Hike
DESCRIPTION:Encinal Canyon is named for encina\, the Spanish word for the holm oak\, a lovely Mediterranean tree with holly characteristics. Holm oaks are one of the main trees used to establish truffle orchards\, but we’ll be nosing around the canyon strictly for its beauty. \nThe trail from Encinal is a smooth\, firm\, and well-traveled singletrack- climbing\, swooping and winding with a constant\, gentle slope. We’ll have fabulous views of the coast for much of the way. Close to the top\, we’ll take on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway\, then the last tenth of a mile is up a seldom-used trail to the isolated peak\, where we’ll both lose and catch our breath with a 360-degree view. \nFrom our perch above it all we’ll see Sandstone Peak to the west\, Simi Valley to the north\, Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east and the Channel Islands to the south. \nThis is an 8 mile out and back hike\, with about 1200′ of elevation gain. \nGive yourself extra time to get to the trailhead- the roads are winding and slow. \nDirections: \nThe parking area is off the north side of Encinal Canyon Road\, almost directly across the street from the Camp 13 fire station. Park in the large dirt lot\, which is free. \nFrom the 101 Freeway\, turn south on Kanan Rd. Continue 6.2 miles\, then turn right onto Mulholland Hwy. After 0.9 miles\, veer left onto Encinal Canyon Rd. Drive 2.4 miles to the parking area\, on the right. \nFrom the Pacific Coast Highway – From the PCH\, turn up Encinal Canyon Road. Drive 5 miles\, then turn right onto Encinal Cyn Rd. Continue 1.1 miles to the parking area\, on the left. \nPlease review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours:\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nPlan on completing the entire hike at a brisk pace or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo dogs \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Lizard Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 600′ gain\nEasier Option\, 3.5 miles\, 460′ gain \nThis is a unique loop through Wildwood Park that takes us to the famous Lizard Rock. \nThere are several extended inclines and a few short but steep climbs that cause this to be rated on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions. I may put down white powder lines so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road through a tunnel\, and turn right on to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll follow for about 1/4 mile\, and then go left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take us to the steps to the trail head parking lot. We’ll regroup. \nThose that want the easier option will cross the parking lot and take main trail (Mesa trail) straight for 1 mile\, turning right at the Lizard Rock trail\, and following it up to Lizard Rock. \nThe rest of us will continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. We make a left\, then the next right to head up to Lizard Rock\, where we’ll share snacks and beverages. \nFinally\, we’ll head along the ridge of Lizard Rock and then down towards the Mesa Trail fire road. We’ll make a left\, and take it all the way back to the main parking lot. Then we’ll cross the lot and take the steps at the far end of the lot down\, and return on the trail we started on\, back to the tunnel and then our cars. \nReturning Early\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. Please follow the posted route and map. \nDirections\nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118:\nCA-118 west to CA-23.\nContinue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los Arboles\nTurn right (west) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. SUMMARY:Ray Miller trail up to the fire road
DESCRIPTION:This is a second hike for Thursday because the first one if full. We will go up the Ray Miller trail to the fire road and back\, about 6 miles. We may see poppies and other flowers. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight\, although it has been foggy lately. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, bring sunscreen\, hopefully there will be some clouds. It may be mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 mi\, 500′ gain\, beginner\nEasier option: 1.5 mi\, 125′ gain\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop\, (the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. \nWe’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. After about 0.2 miles\, there will be a split. We can go either way because they rejoin after about 100 yards\, but for this route\, we’ll go left. \nAfter another half mile\, the route makes a turn to the right. Those that want the super-easy route should continue straight for 100 yards to a log\, where they can wait about 45 min for the rest of us to return for the social event. \nThe rest of the group will follow the trail to the right and continue for about 1.2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, travel about 20 yards west\, and head back in on a different trail. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll reconnect with the original trail for the return. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 yards\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event snack and beverage share. \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the left and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. Click HERE for route. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat\nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac\nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \nDirections:\nLimekiln Canyon Trail\nPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \nFrom the 118\nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.\nLeft (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.\nTrailhead on the right (north).\nPark on either side of the street. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Easy\nPace: 2.5 mph\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.\nTrail: Varied. Good condition. \nWhat to Bring:\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\n1-2 liters of water.\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Santa Susana Stage Road - Beginer hike but the Devils in the details
DESCRIPTION:Details\nThis is a beginner hike with a tad bit of challenge due to gains and a tad bit of scrambling and bush whacking. \n*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes.\nMeetup Time: 7:15 A.M. (We hit the trail at 7:30) \nDISTANCE: 5 miles – out and back \nGAIN: 863 ft \nRATED: Beginner + for a little bit of rock scrambling and slight bush whacking. \nHIKE DURATION: About 2 ½ to 3 hours (including a 20-minute snacky time!) \nDESCRIPTION: The Santa Susana Pass is a narrow gap in the Santa Susana Mountains that separates the San Fernando Valley from Simi Valley. In the mid-19th century\, the Santa Susana Pass became an important transportation route for wagons and stagecoaches traveling between Los Angeles and points north. \nThe stagecoaches and wagons would have to make a sketchy journey down the Devils slide\, an angular rock formation located within the pass. This was so treacherous horses were usually blindfolded and chains were used to augment brakes on the steep descent. Passengers debarked and walked\, as opposed to risking gravity and angular momentum. The deep ruts made by the wagons on the ‘Devil’s Slide’ section are still visible. \nWe will be hiking up the Devils Slide to a overlook where you can see the angle of the Devils Slide and an some breathtaking views of the pass and …uh…the industrial buildings and power lines in the distance. There are a couple of shady Oaks we can park under for Snacky time\, then we will be making our way back down to the to the Devils slide and once back to the bottom a little loop back to the trail head. \nBRING: Strong shoes\, (most of this trail is in the open with little or no shade) Poles will be useful for some the technical areas.; snack; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1-liter electrolytes\, i.e.\, Gatorade). \nADVENTURE PASS: No \n**MEET AT: (**Google GPS Coordinates: 34°14’58.8″N 118°37’10.9″W) The Andora Ave Trail head is in a neighborhood\, so please be quiet and respectful of the locals. Meet at the picnic tables at the trail head. \nBathrooms: Pitt Toilet at the Trail head. \nDogs: OK\, if well behaved around other dogs/ people with hiking poles and on a leash. \nLeaders: Paul H\, and Gary S.

SUMMARY:Wilderness Access Day - Black Star Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Let’s enjoy another Open Access Day! This is where we get to explore trails that are normally closed off to the public. The plan is to a loop that’s 3.5 to 4 miles with around 550 ft. of elevation gain. Since this is shorter\, the plan is to take our time and explore. \nYou don’t have to register on the LetsGoOutside site\, but here is the link for more info: https://letsgooutside.org/activities/2023/05/06/wilderness-access-day-black-star-canyon-53/ \nBlack Star Canyon\, part of OCParks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space\, offers pleasant introductory trails for beginner hikers and families as well as challenging experiences for seasoned trail users. Designated trails are available for self-guided hiking\, biking and equestrian use. A variety of trail loops offer extended exploration throughout the canyons. Take time to explore the local plant communities and beautiful scenery in easy 30-minute walks or take in 7+ miles in a strong cardio trek. \nPre-registration is not required for this event\, though it is available on the website. If you need driving directions\, use the online registration to receive a map and instructions for getting to the Baker Canyon Staging Area. Parking is limited on Black Star Canyon Road and carpooling is strongly recommended. You will not be required to sign-in upon arrival\, though an information booth with trail maps and suggested routes will be available in the staging area. \nPlease note that you are asked to adhere to the following measures during the activity in order to participate: \n\nArrive with all necessary equipment to keep you safe on the trail\, including water\, proper attire\, and footwear\, first aid\, medications\, etc.\nRestrooms will be available\, but facilities will not be sanitized for each individual.\nYou may be prevented from participating if you do not adhere to the above protocols.\n\nAdditionally\, in an effort to respect and protect all employees\, volunteers\, and participants\, please do not sign up or attend if you are not feeling well\, exhibiting any symptoms of illness or have been in recent contact with someone who was ill.\nParticipants are required to stay on designated trails at all times. In addition to being a rare and sensitive habit\, the Irvine Ranch Open Space is under strict protection. There are often unseen dangers just off-trail including\, but not limited to: mountain lions\, poison oak\, ticks\, poisonous spiders\, and venomous snakes. OC Parks Rangers may issue citations for visitors found off-trail so for your safety\, please stay on the designated paths during your stay in Black Star Canyon. To learn more about the staging areas and activity locations\, please visit our Staging Areas Playlist page.\nOther Important Notes: \n\nOC Park Rangers require all trails to be cleared for closure by 2:00pm.\nNo new trail users will be permitted onto the trails at least one hour prior to closing.\nDogs are prohibited on the Irvine Ranch Open Space. No matter how cute yours may be\, by nature\, dogs are predators; their presence and their lingering scent disturb the indigenous wildlife and disrupt vital routines long after a dog has left the area.\nMinors\, ages 18 and under\, should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.\nAdult mountain bikers and equestrians are requested to wear helmets. Minors are required to wear helmets per state law.\nIf you are an equestrian\, there is a separate registration designated for you found at www.LetsGoOutside.org/activities and click under “Wilderness Access Day – Equestrians.” Once registered\, please email info@irconservancy.org at least 72 hours prior to the event so that we may verify whether your trailer can be accommodated in our parking configuration. Trailer parking is very limited and is subject to “first come\, first served.”\nInclement weather or fire danger will cause the program to be cancelled.

SUMMARY:Mission Point The Hard Way
DESCRIPTION:O’Melveny Park spreads over 672 acres\, second on the list of largest parks within the City of Los Angeles\, right after Griffith Park. Noted for its picture-perfect picnic grounds with white fences and towering eucalyptus trees\, O’Melveny Park also challenges hikers with several miles of steep\, backcountry fire roads and primitive trails. \nNormally our hike to the highest spot in the San Fernando Valley known as Mission Point uses the steep Grotto Trail or my alternate no-name one used last year to get to the top. Our return would use the Bee Canyon trail \nHowever\, this time we will explore some of those little used and overgrown trails we have seen crisscrossing our other paths. Instead of returning via Bee Canyon\, we’ll use the Pipleline Trail (an alternate to Neon Way) \nTrekking poles recommended for this one: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \nHike is about 5 miles with 1500 ft total ascent and rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. See the Hike Rating Guide \nHistorical Note \nO’Melveny Park takes its name from the well-known family of Los Angeles lawyers who once owned a gentleman’s ranch here. John O’Melveny bought the land in 1941 and called it CJ Ranch. Cattle roamed the hills\, a citrus orchard was planted\, and family members enjoyed spending weekends roaming the mountains. Although areas near the ranch were oil-rich\, exploration on the ranch was unsuccessful. The O’Melvenys deeded half their ranch to Los Angeles\, and the city purchased the rest \nDirections \nHead for O’Melveny Park using the map pin and Google Maps. The parking lot is small and fills up quickly. Plan on parking on neighboring streets. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated.\nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. Remember this is your hike all responsibilities are of your own once you attend please be aware of your limit. Outdoor activity you can encounter: bodily injury\, snake bits\, sunburn\, overheating. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for a Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe to much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain and rated. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less level off sections. We offer all types of level hikes from moderate to hard to advance only. We encourage everyone to not give up work on your core by joining our easier moderate Events then joining our harder hikes once you are ready. 😊
