SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Temescal Lookout
DESCRIPTION:Our route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout. Our “NO FIREROAD RULE” will be in effect. \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Our destination awaits us! \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 5.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE at https://www.meetuphikes.com/hike-rating-guide/ \n[Note: This hike was previously scheduled for last May 15. At that time Trailer canyon was closed due to Palisades fire and we had to change our starting point. Today we will hike it as originally planned] \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, head north on Palisades Drive. After 2.4 miles. Turn left onto Vereda de la Montura\, (the same turnoff for the trailhead for hikes in Santa Ynez Canyon and Santa Ynez Falls) and make an immediate right on Michael Lane. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). There is street parking available on Michael Lane. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER (see https://www.meetuphikes.com/liability-waiver) and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

SUMMARY:Mission Point via Bee Canyon Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mission-point-via-bee-canyon-trail \nHello Fellow Hikers\,Okay I know what you’re thinking 5.6 miles just over 1400 elevation gain rated hard? Yep it’s rated hard for a reason. This trail starts out nice and easy through O’Melveny Park. It shaded and lined with beautiful trees a nice and easy walk. That’s until you finally hit the trailhead and then the rated hard comes in. As you’ll read through the reviews this trail offers a great incline workout that offers more incline then level off sections. It’s not undoable but will definitely get the heart pumping. Not a lot of junctions or splits on this trail so the faster hikers can really go for it while the rest of us (me) can take quick breather breaks 😛 Once at the top we will be greeted with awesome views a bench\, peak marker and the O’Melveny stone marker. I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mission-point-via-bee-canyon-trail \nTrail out and backMiles 5.6Rated hardElevation Gain 1443 ftDogs allowed \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:1) Hike your own hike2) Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. SUMMARY:Wendy Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 1000′ gain. Easy Intermediate. \nDifferent mapping apps give different directions for the same address\, and many have gotten lost relying on GPS. If you don’t know this location\, please look on a map to find this location before heading out\, and don’t rely only on GPS. This is the Wendy Trailhead\, where S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nFit beginners can still do it\, but they should be aware that there are several areas of extended incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and strenuous for many. \nThat’s OK\, because this is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up. \nWe’ll start at the Wendy trailhead. There are many routes through this park\, so it will be important to listen to the hike leader about various points to stop and let others catch up for regrouping. We’ll be taking the route posted in the photo in this description. \nSlightly more than half way\, we’ll be stopping at a bench and overlook to have our traditional social event\, sharing snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nIf you wish to return before the social event completes\, you are responsible for finding your own way out\, so study the map carefully. It’s only a mile and 100′ of gain\, if you make the correct turns. \nThe Route. \nHike Distance: 4.6 milesGain: 1000′Distribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the middle of this hike.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: There is a no dogs sign that we will pass.Restrooms: YesDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. What to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles. Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp. Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nHosting Route: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. \nThere may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. Each hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting NotesHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nHeartleaf PenstemonLeaves are shiny and saw toothed\, shaped like hearts\, 2 to 6 centimeters long and arranged oppositely on the branches. Stems are red. Small scarlet red tubular flowers . \nYuccaWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. Pronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. \nRoot can be chopped up and used as soap. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape skin off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \nDirections:Wendy Trail Head4128 Potrero RdThousand Oaks\, CA 91361Coordinates of trailhead: 34.154507\, -118.950095 \nFrom CA-118:CA-118 west for 8 miles.CA-23 south for 7.4 miles.US-101 North for 2 miles.Exit 45 Lynn Rd. and south/west for 2.5 miles.Left on S. SUMMARY:PARMA PARK HIKE IN SANTA BARBARA
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nParma Park has been on my list of areas to hike in for some time. Here’s a chance to join me on what should be a new area for most of us to explore in Santa Barbara. \n======================================================================INFO I FOUND ABOUT PARMA PARK \nParma Park is enormous and a fabulous open space\, which makes it a popular place with hikers\, bikers\, and dog walkers. It is snuggled into the foothills\, where you will find live oaks and sage\, peace and quite and refuge from the sound of the highway. This is a very rustic park that has a couple of picnic tables and that’s it. There are no other creature comforts. \nFeatures: Alcohol Allowed\, Biking\, Hiking Trail\, Horseback Riding\, Parking On Street\, Passive Open Spaces\, Views\, Wildlife and BirdingDog Policy: Dogs Allowed On LeashResidents seeking a large open space park close to town may want to visit this park. It is the largest City open space park\, encompassing 200 acres of oak woodland and chaparral along Sycamore and Coyote Creeks. It is known for its history\, habitat\, and recreational uses including its popularity as a landing spot for paragliders and hang gliders. \nThe park provides passive recreation opportunities for hikers\, dogs on leash\, and equestrians. Mountain bike riders may use the park only on the fire/access road. Hang gliders and paragliders use the open grassland between the El Cielito and Mountain Drive entrance as a landing site. The main entrance along Stanwood Road includes a picnic area and equestrian staging area. \nThere are approximately six miles of trails including the Plateau Trail\, Creek Trail\, Stanwood Trail\, Ridge Trail\, and dirt fire/access road. A public trail easement also provides access via the Mountain Drive North entrance. For sweeping views of the City of Santa Barbara\, Montecito\, and the Santa Barbara Channel Islands\, take the Ridge Trail to Rowe’s table. Named for Rowe McMullen\, a long-time volunteer who helped establish trails in the park\, Rowe’s table is the highest point in the park at 775 feet. \nParma Park contains three major creeks and a diverse array of native plant communities including chaparral\, oak woodland\, riparian forest\, coastal sage scrub\, and remnant patches of native grassland. Park vegetation and creeks provide habitat for wildlife and excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing\, especially birds. \nBecause of the limited street parking at the trailhead\, most of us should car pool with others from the Thousand Oaks Park & Ride at 7:30 a.m. \n===================================================================== \nAfter the hike\, I will be debriefing at The Siam Elephant in Carpinteria orThe Rincon Brewery Carpinteriahttp://www.siamelephantusa.com (http://www.siamelephantusa.com/)https://www.rinconbrewery.com/menu-carpinteria \nINITIAL MEETUP LOCATION\, DIRECTIONS AND TIME: The Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:30 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about an hour’s drive to the trailhead. \nFINAL MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Stanwood Drive at Parma Park entrance no later than 9:00 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B026’48.8%22N+119%C2%B040’58.9%22W/@34.4468791\,-119.6835778\,231m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xa38b73ea2de9c28f!7e2!8m2!3d34.4468775!4d-119.6830289The entrance may be closed to vehicles. SUMMARY:Hummingbird - Rocky Peak - Chumash Loop
DESCRIPTION:Details\nJoin us for a the grand loop around 5\,000-acre Rocky Peak Park. RPP in the Santa Susana Mountains straddles the Los Angeles-Ventura county line at the eastern end of Simi Valley. A network of hiking trails weaves through the park that is home to deep oak-lined canyons\, trickling streams\, and massive\, sculpted sandstone formations with a moonscape appearance. \nOn November 11\, 2012 we did this one in the rain. See photos: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/events/90262762/ \nThe Hummingbird Trail\, at the base of Rocky Peak\, crosses Hummingbird Creek and climbs up a narrow canyon through open chaparral to the Rocky Peak Fire Road\, passing stacks of giant sandstone boulders\, sculpted caves\, and dramatic rock outcroppings. \nThe original Hummingbird Trail (and a popular alternate that goes by the Swing Cave) has been destroyed by the mountain bikers long ago. I have a new trail in the area that still remains virtually untouched by the knobs. I call it El Nido de Chuparosas trail \n\n\n 20%	\n \n \n \n \n TheFitLife Carbon Fiber Trekking Poles – Collapsible and Telescopic Walking Stic... \n \n $50.68 $40.54 (As of: 2025/08/28 5:00 pm - Details)\n View on Amazon \n \n \n \n\n ×Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on https://www.amazon.com/ at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of this product.\nThe Chumash Trail ascends the west flank of Rocky Peak. The trail winds up the chaparral cloaked mountainside to the ridge north of Rocky Peak\, passing sculpted sandstone outcroppings\, caves\, fossils\, fault lines and a series of scenic overlooks and highland meadows. From Hamilton Saddle and the Rocky Peak Trail junction are panoramic views of the Simi Hills\, Simi Valley\, San Fernando Valley\, the Santa Susana Mountains\, the Santa Monica Mountains\, Blind Canyon\, and Las Llajas Canyon. \nRocky Peak gets its name from the many large craggy boulders that dot its surface. At 2\,715 feet Rocky Peak is the third-highest point in the Santa Susana Mountains\, and overlooks the San Fernando Valley and Chatsworth\, the Simi Hills\, and the Simi Valley in Southern California. \nThe peak sits on the Los Angeles County–Ventura County line and marks the point where the county line changes direction from true North to a more North-Westerly direction. A large railroad spike driven into the rocks mark this exact spot on the county line. \nHike is appx 8 miles with about 2\,100 feet net elevation gain and is rated DIFFICULT. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate. \nThis route would be classified as fit-beginner\, if not for an extended incline that runs for almost a mile in the middle of the hike. It is a fire road with a continuous climb. Fit beginners should be OK on this hike\, although they may wish to take several breaks during the middle ascent. \nWe’ll be stopping at various points to regroup and this is not a conditioning hike. It is a social hike (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nWe will start by heading the back way from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot and around to an asphalt road. Then we’ll make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, where we’ll head for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know were it is\, for a snack share social event (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we’ll continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the trail head parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted as part of the description. \nInteresting Notes: \nTurkey Mullein \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 5 milesGain: 800Distribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. It is a fire road incline of about 1 mile.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nThis description has a picture of the route. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. SUMMARY:The Mt. Lukens Loop
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 9.5 MilesElevation Gain: 2800 ft.Trail: Single track\, fire road\, uneven downhills.Rating: 8/10\, due to trail conditionPace: Intermediate to advanced \nNot for beginners-there won’t be a sweeper!! \nThe Plan StoryNot many small- or medium-sized cities can boast three mountain ranges within its border\, but Glendale does. Stretching east and north from the San Fernando Valley\, the city takes in substantial parts of the San Rafael Hills and the Verdugo Mountains\, plus a small slice of the San Gabriel Mountains at the city’s northern extremity. \nAt this northernmost spot in Glendale\, overlooking the foothill communities of La Crescenta and Tujunga\, lies Deukmejian Wilderness Park\, named after the former California Governor George Deukmejian. The park’s 700 acres of chaparral-covered slopes are drained by two ravines with steep gradients: Cooks Canyon and Dunsmore Canyon. During the mid-20th Century\, the area alongside the Dunsmore Canyon stream was used by the Le Mesnager family as a vineyard\, An old stone barn at the trailhead is reminiscent of that time. \nMt. Lukens is the tallest peak within the Los Angeles city limits\, and it has spectacular views of the Los Angeles basin and surrounding mountains from the summit. \nThis trip makes a loop from Deukmejian Wilderness Park in Glendale\, ascending via the Crescenta View Trail to the Haines Canyon Motorway to Mount Lukens. Our return route will continue on the Haines Canyon Motorway to the Rim of the Valley Trail\, returning to Deukmejian Wilderness Park via Cook’s Canyon a nicely shaded area with a small creek. The views on both legs of the hike are great. If visibility is good\, expect to see Catalina Island\, Santa Barbara Island\, the entire Santa Monica range\, and more. \nThe downhill portion of the Rim of the Valley trail in particular has some areas of loose rocks and soil as well as a few Yucca maize portions. Walking sticks could be helpful to some in these areas. \n \nDogs: Welcome on this one as long as they have good trail manners and are picked up after. \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway exit Pennsylvania Ave (17A) and go north to Foothill Blvd. Turn left on Foothill Blvd. and go to New York Ave. Turn right on New York Ave. and go to the end\, Markridge Rd. Turn left on Markridge and go about 200 yards to the park entrance on your right. Follow the entry road up to the parking area. Parking is free and there are restrooms and a water fountain near the trail head. \nNo Carpooling recommended for the time being********************************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. After 1/3 mile\, the trail becomes Wildwood Canyon Trail. We continue for another 2/3 mile and cross a bridge just past the Meadows Picnic area. \nWe’ll make a left\, continuing on Wildwood Canyon Trail\, past the Tee Pee Trail\, behind Paradise Falls\, left at the split\, and after about a mile\, Wildwood Canyon Picnic area will be on the left. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks in the shape of an arrow. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. SUMMARY:TOYS FOR TOTS-(TOY SORTING)VOLUNTEER EVENT WITH SALVATION ARMY
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO \nHOW TO UPDATE YOUR PROFILE:https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nEvery year I volunteer with the Salvation Army with differnt events they host during the Christmas season. This year volunteers are needed at their Bell Warehouse in Los Angeles to sort toys to be delivered to needy families. \nSALVATION ARMY REQUIREMENTS:must be fulluy vaccinated.masks must be worn in the warehouse.comfortable attire and closed toe shoes.(you may get dirty so please do not wear anything really nice)no personal belongings should be brought into the warehouse and should be left in your car. \nThis is a fun event. There are lots of toys to sort.Trucks are constantly dropping off and picking up donated toys to and from the warehouse. \nThere may be some downtime if we finish sorting toys sooner than expected but during that time there are other preparations to be made before the next delivery. For example\, labeling\, sorting and breaking down boxes. \nSince the Salvation Army also provides many other services during major disasters\, help may be needed with preparing personal hygiene kits and special packages for families in need. \nNo guarantees but last year the Salvation Army provided snacks and drinks for volunteers. \nIf you wish to participate please send me a PM with your email address/phone number and I will forward to the coordinator. \nI will email the warehouse location once everything is confirmed. \nThe two volunteer dates are Tuesday 12/14 and 12/16 (I will post a separate event for this date).Hours are the same for both dates 9am to 12pm. \nParking is free. \nMy cell: 562 331 3793 \nCDH POLICY: Any member with two NO SHOWS on CDH events since Jan 2017 will lose their membership with CDH. Members will not be allowed on this and future events until they have updated their CDH profile by answering the new questions as well as having a recognizable face photo of themselves. This update cannot be done via an app\, an iPhone or any other type of a hand-held phone. It must be done on a computer. \nFAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN YOU BEING EXCLUDED FROM MY EVENTS IN THE FUTURE.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Tunnel Loop - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate – 3 miles\, 1000′ gain. \nThis hike is relatively short\, but the middle portion is a rugged and continuous incline for 1 mile with about 700′ of gain. Even though we’ll be taking this trail at the pace of a social hike\, beginners may will find this hike to be too hard. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until we reach the wildlife tunnel. \nThis is a tunnel underneath the CA-118 freeway\, built so that animals can cross. We’ll regroup here\, then continue up a strenuous and rugged climb for 1 mile until we reach the Rocky Peak Fire Rd. We’ll regroup again\, then turn left for 500′ until we reach the Hummingbird Trail. \nWe’ll find a couple large rocks and a bench there. We’ll have a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, then head down the Rocky Peak Fire Road until it ends at the CA-118 freeway. We’ll then cross the freeway back to our cars. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves take on a greyer color. \nDirections:Rocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118Simi Valley\, CA 9306534.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23North CA-23 for 8.4 miles.East I-118 for 14 miles.Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike:Distance: 3 miles\, 3.5 hoursElevation Gain: 1000′Difficulty: Intermediate.See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781).Pace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes if leashed\, per State lawRestrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: NoParking: Free\, south side of CA-118Trail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and rugged water path.Purpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:1-2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE SERIES TREK-1 (GAVIOTA WIND CAVES)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nSANTA BARBARA COAST- SERIES OF HIKES \nJoin me on one of CDH’s series of Santa Barbara Coastal Range treks. We’ll hike a trail we’ve done before that will be interesting with views of the ocean. This hike is definitely meant to be more visual than physical\, thus\, less conditioning but more of a mental enlightenment. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this trek offers. After it concludes\, those interested can join me for a late lunch in the Santa Barbara area. \nSANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK-1 (GAVIOTA WIND CAVES) \nOur first trek in this Santa Barbara Coastal series will be in Gaviota State Park. We’ll visit the western half of the park which will take us to The Gaviota Wind Caves. We’ll take on several trails (Yucca\, Hollister\, Beach to Back Country\, Woodland) and the Trespass and Tunnel View Trails as well as a STEEP rugged ridge to the caves\, to give us a total of 8+ miles on this hike. This will be accomplished via a car shuttle. We’ll be spending some time exploring the rock formations where the wind caves are. You’ll want to wait for me bringing up the rear so as to not miss out on the various side trails that we’ll be taking to overlooks and caves. \nThere will be a lot of junctions on this event that will keep the Tigers from running to far ahead as I bring up myself and the other Turtles. It’s important to stop and not try to anticipate the hike at these junctions\, or you’ll miss out on my planned route to the overlooks and the caves. \nThis area is at least 1.5 hours drive from Thousand Oaks\, so keep that in mind when signing on. Devote the whole day to this and don’t sign on if you have other commitments later that day. \nThis trek will involve a car shuttle from our meetup point to the trailhead. \nLooking forward to sharing another Santa Barbara coastal range trek with you. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Just past the main entrance to Gaviota State Park no later than 9:00 a.m. (SEE MAP FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION) \nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: Take the 101 Fwy. to the Gaviota State Park exit. on the left side of the 101 Fwy. shortly after heading inland once you’ve reached Gaviota. SEE MAP ABOVE. Turn left and drive 0.5 miles to parking area along road which is .2 of a mile past the Gaviota State Park entrance. To save money\, avoid parking in the State Park since there’s a $10 fee to do so. \nEARLIER MEETUP TIME\, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way\, we can meet at the Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:15 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about 1.5 hour’s drive to Gaviota State Park. \nDISTANCE: 8+ miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 1600’/1800′ \nTHE PACE: 2 mph \nDURATION: 6 hours \nTERRAIN: Single and double track trails plus a very steep ridge to the caves \nLEVEL: Intermediate \nOPTIONAL LUNCH: I’ll be stopping off at Woody’s in Santa Barbara for lunch.5112 Hollister Ave\, Santa Barbarahttps://www.woodysbbq.com/menu \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nRain may cancel the hike.
