SUMMARY:Don's Rocky IV Turkey Trot
DESCRIPTION:Want to walk off some of that Thanksgiving feast and not deal with the shopping mall crowds? Then let’s do our annual after Thanksgiving Day Don’s Rocky IV Not the Movie. This is about a five hour hike\, so we should be back to our cars by 2:00pm or thereabouts. \n \nDistance: 9 miles Dual Rating: Baldy Lovers: 3/10 Baldy Haters: 6/10 \nElevation gain: 1400 feet The Trail: A figure 8 loop through 4 rocky parks. \nThe Plan: I’ve improved a previous route as we’ll be taking the Old Stagecoach Road to Rocky Peak to Corriganville Park via the Wildlife Corridor to Chatsworth Park to our cars. \nBring lunch as there are ample picnic tables in Corriganville. \nThe Old Santa Susana Stagecoach Road is a route taken by early travelers between the San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley near Chatsworth\, California via the Santa Susana Pass. The main route climbs through what is now Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park\, with a branch in Chatsworth Park South. It was an important artery linking the Los Angeles Basin and inland Ventura county\, and was part of the main route for travel by stagecoach between Los Angeles and San Francisco from 1861 until the opening of rail traffic between the cities in 1876. The Old Santa Susana Stage Road is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nDogs are welcome\, if friendly and must be leashed\, washed\, fed and picked up after. Be on the lookout for rattlesnakes\, ticks\, zombies\, great views\, awesome sights\, friendly fellow hikers and martians. \nCheck the Weather Mapquest[…] \nDirections: Go west on Devonshire from Topanga Canyon as if you are going to Chatsworth Park. Instead of driving into the (closed) park entrance\, turn left (south) on Larwin Street and go one block until you come to a chain link fence on your right. This is very easy to locate because in addition to the fence\, an old set of power lines runs directly overhead. Park along the curb. We will enter the park through a gap in the fence. \n1 – A walk \n2 – A longer walk \n3 – 3 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 5+ mile hike w/1000 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/1000 ft. elevation gain \n7 – 7+ mile hike w/1500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to do CPR) \n8 – 5+ mile hike w/2000 ft. elevation gain (a great feeling of accomplishment when done) \n9 – use your imagination \n10 – I don’t lead or do these. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: I am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). SUMMARY:Mt. Hillyer from Chilao Flat Visitor Center
DESCRIPTION:This is a short\, but very sweet hike with lots of eye candy including fall colors\, impressive boulder outcroppings and interesting historical significance. I am open to extending the distance in any direction to add more mileage (as an out and back)\, but due to trailhead closures still in effect\, we cannot make this a true shuttle hike to and from Three Points or Devils Canyon Trailhead which are both still closed\, per Angeles Forest Order. \nChilao Visitor Center to Silver Moccasin Trail (.5 mile)Silver Moccasin Trail to Horse Flats Campground (1 mile)Horse Flats Campground to Mt. Hillyer via Mt. Hillyer Trail (2.5 miles)Return the same route. \nDISTANCE: ~6 milesELEVATION GAIN: ~1\,100′PARKING: If parking anyplace other than the Visitor Center\, a National Forest Adventure Pass is required to be displayed on vehicles parked while visitors are hiking. \nDirections: From I-210 in La Canada\, take the Angeles Crest Highway (route 2) northeast for 26 miles to the turnout for the Chilao Flat Visitor Center (not to be confused with the turnout for the Chilao Campground\, which comes earlier if you’re coming from L.A.) Turn left and park at the Visitor Center\, as the parking at the Silver Moccasin trailhead is very limited. \nHISTORY: Named for Mary Hillyer (ca.1865-1933)\, described by Robinson as “a competent and much beloved clerk” who worked during the 1920’s in the office of William V. Mendenhall\, the Angeles National Forest Supervisor (1929-57). Nevertheless\, it has often been argued that this summit might have been more appropriately titled after one of its early residents. This area was once deep in the forest and is rich in lore. The main Gabrieleño cross-mountain trail passed by this peak\, however Indian names for this area are long forgotten. It was criscrossed by bandidos during the wide-open years when Los Angeles was busy earning the title of “Murder Capitol of America”. About this time\, the first known dweller near “Hillyer” was the romantic and self-described “caballero” Tiburcio Vasquez (1835-75) who made the eastern slopes of this peak his mountain headquarters. Deeply resenting the results of the Mexican American War\, he considered himself a guerrilla freedom-fighter who wouldn’t admit defeat. He boasted no jail could hold him (probably because he had a girl in every hamlet and they usually came to his rescue) but eventually he was convicted and hung for being a notorious horse thief. Vasquez Rocks\, and Vasquez Canyon are also named for him. “Horse Flats” below the summit of “Hillyer” is so named because Vasquez often pastured his herds there. \nJose Gonzales\, one of his vaqueros\, was very handy with a knife. But when he dispatched a bear with one\, his amazed pals nicknamed him “Chillia”which refers to “chili pepper”\, and could translate as “hot\, stuff”. \nIn close proximity to Mt. Hillyer\, the first American pioneer to settle the forest was Lewis Newcomb (ca.1860-1950). He settled here in 1890\, and began a solitary life as one of the most well-known and knowledgeable of local mountain men. He homesteaded a quarter-section\, and because of his intimate knowledge of these mountains was appointed as one of the first Forest Ranger’s in the newly created San Gabriel Timberland Reserve (1898). He was involved in the construction of many structures both for friends and for the Forest Service. He built the nation’s first Ranger Station at West Fork (1900) as well as the one at Pine (now Charlton) Flat (1902) where he served for many years. He is responsible for both blazing many mountain trails such as the one down “Shortcut Canyon” and over the east slope of Mount Wilson to Santa Anita Canyon. In 1910 he built his third log home that is still cited on maps as “Louie’s cabin”. His name also survives in the Newcomb Ranch Inn\, and in Newcomb Pass near Mount Wilson. He left the mountain in 1940 because he felt that the new Angeles Crest Highway (which reached here in 1938)\, had “ruined the place”. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Lyons Ranch and Taylor Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/lyons-ranch-and-taylor-loop-trail \nHello Fellow Hikers\,Let’s check out Taylor Trail Wilderness & Open Space Area. This trail will offer wide open views throughout the hike. Nice gradual climbs with a section of a more direct climb with level off sections to enjoy the views and relax. This is a lesser known trail for the area and as one put it “A well-marked and well-maintained high-desert trail perfect for solitude and a moderate workout. ” There are several trails in this area and can get quite crowded so will explore this lesser known trail as others have called it. SUMMARY:MT. BADEN POWELL - THE UNPARALLED ASCENT AND DESCENT ROUTE
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nBefore the rain and snow hits this area and while it’s nice and cool\, I’m planning on taking on Mount Baden Powell via The Big Horn Mine. \nTHIS EVENT WILL INVOLVE 2.75 MILES OF VERY STEEP OFF TRAIL HIKING ALONG RIDGES and 2.75 miles of trails. Don’t let the low mileage fool you\, this will be a great conditioning hike. You’ll be taking on Mt. Baden Powell as so few have ever done before. \nTHE TREK: From The Vincent Gap parking area at 6585’ (mile marker 74.80)\, we will hike along an easy 400’ gain in elevation over 2 miles to The Big Horn Mine\, which we can explore for awhile. From there the route to the top of Mt. Baden Powell along its eastern backbone is the most challenging and by far most avoided\, in fact\, it’s not even listed in The Sierra Club’s routes to the top. This no nonsense kick in the @$$ cross country route will require a person with legs of steel and fearless of heights. This steep backbone at times resembles a knives edge with steep drop offs into the huge bowl of Mine Gulch\, and it makes the backbones of Mt. Baldy look meek in comparison. Once at the top\, we will break for a well deserved lunch for at least an hour\, savoring over our accomplishment. From here we will descend yet another off trail ridge back to Hwy. 2. This event is accomplished by way of a short 2 mile car shuttle. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS AND TIME: From the 210 Fwy\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy and drive north about a quarter mile to just past Milmada Dr. in LA CANADA\, then park alongside the road. We will all meet here no later than 7:00 a.m. and car shuttle up Angeles Crest Hwy. 2 to (mile marker 73.00). From there we will shuttle over to Vincent Gap parking area (mile marker 74.80) to begin our trek. An Adventure Pass will be needed to park on Hwy. 2 at Vincent Gap. \nDURATION: This will be an all day event\, so if you have to be back at a certain time\, then please don’t sign up. \nTERRAIN: A very very steep ridge which will make Register Ridge seem easy. \nDISTANCE: 5.5 extremely challenging miles at times \nELEVATION RANGE: From 6585′ to 9399′ with an overall gain of 3000′. \nTHE PACE: 2 MPH moving pace on the 2+ miles of trails and what ever pace it takes on the ridges with several breaks along the way. \nLEVEL: Wednesday’s CDH core group and advanced intermediate Trekkers. \nSUGGESTIONS: Bring lots of water\, since this will be a very demanding trek up the ridge. Having trekking poles and micro spikes will help. It’ll be cold\, bring gloves and layered clothing.

SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:My Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! \n👉 Hike is about 4 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as DIFFICULT due to terrain. See my hike rating guide here: https://www.meetuphikes.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDIRECTIONS:\nHead toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodglade Ln. by the ball field \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Paradise Falls - Moonridge - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.3 miles\, 800′ gain\, fit beginner. \nA hike to Paradise Falls is one of the most popular things to do for those visiting Simi Valley\, yet a lot of people that live nearby rarely make this fun hike or perhaps have never done it. There are several paths one can take to the falls. \nThis one is often described as “easy” but I rate it easy-intermediate because there are a few extended inclines of 1000 steps and there are several hills of about 100 steps that are somewhat steep. There are also a couple “stair cases” made of railroad ties that are up to 4 stories. \nThe waterfall is flowing fully even during our drought conditions. It is fed by urban run-off\, surface water waste created by urbanization. It feeds into a small pond\, where I see people swimming and diving on occasion\, but this water is not safe or legal to swim in due to health risks and debris hidden below the surface. \nThis is Mark the Bold’s Moonridge loop route. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll head about 100 steps north and go down and into an under-street tunnel to cross the road. We’ll turn right out of the tunnel\, and follow this path around. \nThere are several splits of this trail\, so follow the group. The trail leads through a thick canopy to the bottom of the steps that lead to the main parking lot. We’ll regroup there. \nWe’ll continue along the Moonridge trail\, following it around\, crossing a fire road\, and make a left at the North Teepee trail for about 500′ to a large Teepee. We can take a few pictures\, there’s a drinking fountain\, and we can rest a moment. Then we’ll continue down to the waterfall and hang out for a short while. \nTo continue\, we’ll head partly back up and across the back side of the waterfall along Wildwood Canyon trail. After about another 200 yards\, we’ll come to couple picnic tables on the right where we’ll share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nReturning EarlyFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the entire snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. You can either follow the posted route and map\, or take this alternate route: left at the next junction\, a relatively steep up for 200 yds. back to the Teepee\, turn right and continue 1/2 mile until it dead-ends\, then turn right again. After 1/2 mile\, you will reach the trail head parking lot. Turn right at the road for 4 block and cross the street to find the tennis court parking lot. \nContinuing with the groupWe’ll continue for 1/3 mile along the Wildwood Canyon trail\, cross a bridge\, make a left\, and follow the Indian Creek trail for 1 mile until arriving back through the tunnel and back to the parking lot. \nIf you are not following the leader on the return\, you should know:• After crossing the bridge and turning left\, you will come to a creek. We’ll be taking a sharp turn to the left a few feet before the second creek. It’s easy to miss and almost doesn’t even look like a trail. \nInteresting Notes: \nYou will see several entities of note: \nPrickly Pear Cactus \nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn or scrape off needles – even stones can be used if you don’t have a knife. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nSugar Bush \nLooks almost like Laurel Sumac. Pointy leaves\, which is one way to tell it apart from the Lemonade berry. Has fuzzy red berries in long clumps that can be used to make a lemonade like drink. Sap from the fruit can be used as a sweetener. Leaves are edible. Can only be found in the California hills. \nDirections: \nWildwood Park635 W Avenida De Los ArbolesThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118: \nCA-118 west to CA-23.Continue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los ArbolesTurn right (east) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. There will be tennis courts on the right with a parking lot. \nFrom CA-23: \nCA-23 to exit 15\, Avenida de los ArbolesEast on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until it ends.Trail head on the left.Turn right (east) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. SUMMARY:Afternoon Delight: Oak Creek Canyon-Los Robles-Los Padres Loop
DESCRIPTION:This is a potluck hike in the Los Robles Open Space. We will do the Oak Creek Canyon-Los Robles-Los Padres Loop among some beautiful oak groves and great views of the Conejo Valley. That will be about 4.5 miles with 900′ total ascent and is rated MEDIUM (see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/) \nThere are facilities at the trailhead including picnic benches. You can leave the food and drink in car during hike. \nHighlights along the way include the “Lily Tomlin” trail and “Sherwood Forest.” (not to be confused with the Sherwood Forest of my Pentachaeta Loop hike) \nGroup Trivia: We first did this hike in May 2008. Back then\, when I was living in Oak Park/Westlake Village\, it was the location of our infamous Sundowner Hikes. \nDirections to trailhead: \nFrom the 101 freeway exit Moorpark Rd. Drive to the south end of Moorpark Rd\, turn right on Greenmeadow Ave.\, and go a half mile to the parking lot. (Make sure you drive a half mile on Greenmeadow Ave. before parking) \nBring water\, snacks\, camera\, sunscreen \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Upside down lollipop
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 4 miles\, 900′ gain. \nEasy Intermediate means it is on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781 \nThis is an upside down lollipop that takes us first to the highest point in the area where the views are fantastic. The return is down around the back side of the hill at the parking lot. \nThere is an initial climb for about 2/3 miles and 425′ of gain that can be strenuous for many if done non-stop\, and there is one other strenuous climb of just under 1/2 mile and 225′ of gain up a fire road. All the rest of the portions of this hike are down or have mild climbs. \nFit beginners can do this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the extended and steeper climbs. That’s OK\, because we’ll be stopping at various points to regroup and this is not a conditioning hike. It is a social hike. \nStarting from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot\, we head up Long Canyon Trail to a bench. We’ll regroup and let others catch up\,then continue on past the five-points intersection and up to the next bench. We’ll take in the views and have a social event (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes. \nWe’ll head back to the first bench\, but instead of climbing down the trail that took us up\, we’ll continue up the Sunrise trail and follow it all the way to the Woodridge Loop trail at the top of an asphalt path. We’ll take a sometimes not easy to see entrance on the right\, getting on the Woodridge Connector and take back to the parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted at the end of the description. \nInteresting Notes: \nTurkey Mullein \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupify fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liasons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 4 milesGain: 900Distribution: Most of the incline is in the first 15 minutes of the hike. The second strenuous climb is up a fire road\, after 1000 more steps\, going up another 0.4 miles.Difficulty: Easy Intermediate.Shape: Upside down lollipop\, clockwise.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.Trail Variations: The beginning is a tough climb.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nThere is a picture of the route posted with this event. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections: \nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. SUMMARY:Boney Peak (Tri Peak Optional)
DESCRIPTION:Stats: \nDistance: 9-10 miles\, 5-7 hours \nElevation Gain: 2700 ft. \nRating: Moderate 8/10 \nNot for beginners\, no sweeper! \nTrail: Looped\, will be on mostly rocky and regular trails with a very short stretch of pavement. WARNING: There will be some short stretches of steep uphill climbs where some might feel more comfortable on their hands and knees. Consider bringing gloves. \n \nThis loop hike will take us along some nearby beautiful and isolated trails in the Boney Mountain State Wilderness Area of Point Mugu State Park to the spectacular rock formations of Tripeaks and then just a quarter mile further to the Boney Overlook. After lunch at Boney \, we’ll head back down via the Upper Cabin Trail after pausing briefly at Boney\, past the old cabin site (Danielson Memorial) and back to the cars. \n \nThe Western Ridge trail gets quite a bit of use but is not officially maintained so it is very narrow in places. Overall it is quite steep\, climbing 1200 feet in 1.2 miles\, and it has some short and very steep sections. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants are strongly recommended to help protect against scratches from the chaparral. A few scratches\, however\, are worth the outstanding views we’ll have to the west and south. The trail back isn’t quite as steep\, but it is loose and rutted in many places and therefore presents other slip and fall hazards. \nTripeaks: A jumble of sandstone formations with huge boulders\, caves and a nifty crevice to traverse. We could spend hours exploring just this little area\, but we’ll only have enough time to look at a few main features \n \nBoney: Commands sweeping views of Ventura County\, Westlake\, Malibu\, Point Mugu State Park and the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day the Channel Islands are visible to the west. Despite its modest elevation\, Boney Peak rises dramatically from Sycamore Canyon near Camarillo. Much of its north and western face is marked by a 1\,500 foot precipice lined with jagged formations and rocky crags. \nBring lunch. \nDirections: From the Los Angeles area take the 101 freeway north to Newbury Park in Ventura County. Exit at Wendy Drive. Turn left onto Wendy and continue to Lynn Road. Turn right onto Lynn and continue to Via Goleta. Turn left onto Via Goleta (see 1st pic) and continue to the end \n4126 1/2 W. Potrero Rd\, Newbury Park CA 91320 is for Satwiwa Culture Center for accurate directions \n \n****************************************** \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. SUMMARY:Trailer Canyon to Temescal Lookout
DESCRIPTION:Our route begins on Trailer Canyon fire road providing broad views over Santa Ynez Canyon and the surrounding mountains. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout. Our “NO FIREROAD RULE” will be in effect. \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Our destination awaits us! \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 5.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,200 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE at https://www.meetuphikes.com/hike-rating-guide/ \n[Note: This hike was previously scheduled for last May 15. At that time Trailer canyon was closed due to Palisades fire and we had to change our starting point. Today we will hike it as originally planned] \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, half a mile east of PCH\, head north on Palisades Drive. After 2.4 miles. Turn left onto Vereda de la Montura\, (the same turnoff for the trailhead for hikes in Santa Ynez Canyon and Santa Ynez Falls) and make an immediate right on Michael Lane. Drive half a mile to the trailhead\, which will be on the left (look for what looks like a private driveway). There is street parking available on Michael Lane. \nTrail statistics are approximate. \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Mission Point via Bee Canyon Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mission-point-via-bee-canyon-trail \nHello Fellow Hikers\,Okay I know what you’re thinking 5.6 miles just over 1400 elevation gain rated hard? Yep it’s rated hard for a reason. This trail starts out nice and easy through O’Melveny Park. It shaded and lined with beautiful trees a nice and easy walk. That’s until you finally hit the trailhead and then the rated hard comes in. As you’ll read through the reviews this trail offers a great incline workout that offers more incline then level off sections. It’s not undoable but will definitely get the heart pumping. Not a lot of junctions or splits on this trail so the faster hikers can really go for it while the rest of us (me) can take quick breather breaks 😛 Once at the top we will be greeted with awesome views a bench\, peak marker and the O’Melveny stone marker. I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mission-point-via-bee-canyon-trail \nTrail out and backMiles 5.6Rated hardElevation Gain 1443 ftDogs allowed \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:1) Hike your own hike2) Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. SUMMARY:Wendy Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 1000′ gain. Easy Intermediate. \nDifferent mapping apps give different directions for the same address\, and many have gotten lost relying on GPS. If you don’t know this location\, please look on a map to find this location before heading out\, and don’t rely only on GPS. This is the Wendy Trailhead\, where S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nFit beginners can still do it\, but they should be aware that there are several areas of extended incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and strenuous for many. \nThat’s OK\, because this is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up. \nWe’ll start at the Wendy trailhead. There are many routes through this park\, so it will be important to listen to the hike leader about various points to stop and let others catch up for regrouping. We’ll be taking the route posted in the photo in this description. \nSlightly more than half way\, we’ll be stopping at a bench and overlook to have our traditional social event\, sharing snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nIf you wish to return before the social event completes\, you are responsible for finding your own way out\, so study the map carefully. It’s only a mile and 100′ of gain\, if you make the correct turns. \nThe Route. \nHike Distance: 4.6 milesGain: 1000′Distribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the middle of this hike.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: There is a no dogs sign that we will pass.Restrooms: YesDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. What to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles. Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp. Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nHosting Route: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. \nThere may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. Each hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting NotesHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nHeartleaf PenstemonLeaves are shiny and saw toothed\, shaped like hearts\, 2 to 6 centimeters long and arranged oppositely on the branches. Stems are red. Small scarlet red tubular flowers . \nYuccaWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. Pronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. \nRoot can be chopped up and used as soap. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. SUMMARY:PARMA PARK HIKE IN SANTA BARBARA
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nParma Park has been on my list of areas to hike in for some time. Here’s a chance to join me on what should be a new area for most of us to explore in Santa Barbara. \n======================================================================INFO I FOUND ABOUT PARMA PARK \nParma Park is enormous and a fabulous open space\, which makes it a popular place with hikers\, bikers\, and dog walkers. It is snuggled into the foothills\, where you will find live oaks and sage\, peace and quite and refuge from the sound of the highway. This is a very rustic park that has a couple of picnic tables and that’s it. There are no other creature comforts. \nFeatures: Alcohol Allowed\, Biking\, Hiking Trail\, Horseback Riding\, Parking On Street\, Passive Open Spaces\, Views\, Wildlife and BirdingDog Policy: Dogs Allowed On LeashResidents seeking a large open space park close to town may want to visit this park. It is the largest City open space park\, encompassing 200 acres of oak woodland and chaparral along Sycamore and Coyote Creeks. It is known for its history\, habitat\, and recreational uses including its popularity as a landing spot for paragliders and hang gliders. \nThe park provides passive recreation opportunities for hikers\, dogs on leash\, and equestrians. Mountain bike riders may use the park only on the fire/access road. Hang gliders and paragliders use the open grassland between the El Cielito and Mountain Drive entrance as a landing site. The main entrance along Stanwood Road includes a picnic area and equestrian staging area. \nThere are approximately six miles of trails including the Plateau Trail\, Creek Trail\, Stanwood Trail\, Ridge Trail\, and dirt fire/access road. A public trail easement also provides access via the Mountain Drive North entrance. For sweeping views of the City of Santa Barbara\, Montecito\, and the Santa Barbara Channel Islands\, take the Ridge Trail to Rowe’s table. Named for Rowe McMullen\, a long-time volunteer who helped establish trails in the park\, Rowe’s table is the highest point in the park at 775 feet. \nParma Park contains three major creeks and a diverse array of native plant communities including chaparral\, oak woodland\, riparian forest\, coastal sage scrub\, and remnant patches of native grassland. Park vegetation and creeks provide habitat for wildlife and excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing\, especially birds. \nBecause of the limited street parking at the trailhead\, most of us should car pool with others from the Thousand Oaks Park & Ride at 7:30 a.m. \n===================================================================== \nAfter the hike\, I will be debriefing at The Siam Elephant in Carpinteria orThe Rincon Brewery Carpinteriahttp://www.siamelephantusa.com (http://www.siamelephantusa.com/)https://www.rinconbrewery.com/menu-carpinteria \nINITIAL MEETUP LOCATION\, DIRECTIONS AND TIME: The Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:30 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about an hour’s drive to the trailhead. \nFINAL MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Stanwood Drive at Parma Park entrance no later than 9:00 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B026’48.8%22N+119%C2%B040’58.9%22W/@34.4468791\,-119.6835778\,231m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xa38b73ea2de9c28f!7e2!8m2!3d34.4468775!4d-119.6830289The entrance may be closed to vehicles.
