SUMMARY:Strawberry Scramble Loop via Colby Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Scramble lovers only. We’re taking the mountaineers route with about a mile of exposed climbing on the rocks. Limiting to those I’m comfortable climbing with since it will be a full hike and a long day. \nSTATS \nDistance: ~12 miles \nElevation: >3200 \nLevel: 8/10 \nDuration: 6+ hours\, bring snacks and/or lunch \nNOT FOR BEGINNERS! \nNO SWEEP!! \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/5/d/9/600_448438841.jpeg \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/d/9/7/600_456640343.jpeg \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/d/9/e/600_456640350.jpeg \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/d/b/4/600_456640372.jpeg \nThe Plan \nWe’ll head up to Strawberry Peak through the scenic Colby Canyon and up the mountaineers route. This is an exposed scramble and not recommended for those not comfortable with this type of terrain. From the peak\, we’ll head down to the Strawberry Peak Trail and loop back around to Colby Canyon. The truck trail is overgrown in spots\, with yucca obstacle courses and also a few poodle dog fields. Other than a couple spots with easily navigate able washouts it’s in pretty good shape though. There will be some short and steep rocky portions throughout the day. Mt Lawlor will also be an option if we the time and inclination. \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Story \nStrawberry Peak – 6164 ft. \nStrawberry Peak is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. Just a short drive up Angeles Crest Highway (SR2) from the city of La Cañada. Being so close to the Los Angeles metropolitan area and offering such outstanding hiking opportunities\, Strawberry is understandably very popular. The summit offers wonderful views of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean (although often obscured by smog). And to the north the High Desert and Tehachapi mountains are visible. \nNamed by “some wags at Switzer’s Camp”\, according to Hiram Reid (1886). It is told that they fancied a resemblance to a strawberry standing with its blossom end up. “We named it Strawberry because there weren’t any strawberries on it.” Reid icily noted that “the joke took” and that burlesque name has been commonly used by the old settlers; but the peak name is waiting some worthy occasion for a worthy name . Like many other playful peak names\, few expected the name would last\, but it has-perhaps because Americans have always loved to toy with place names. \nThe first known ascents were by parties led by Ezekiel Simmer from Switzer’s. A trail was built along the Arroyo\, and then up Colby Canyon to the saddle west of the summit\, and then up the Class 3 rock to the top. This was one of the most popular destinations during the first “Great Hiking Era” (1895-1935). It was also climbed and poetically recorded by Saunders (1923). One of this peak’s most curious moments was when a giant gas balloon\, the America crashed on the summit after being caught in a storm. The six men aboard\, including Captain. A. E. Medlin\, spent a freezing night on the mountain but clamored down Colby Canyon to safety the next morning (1909). It was front page news and some sought to rename the peak after Medlin but nothing came of it. \nCalled “Strawberry Peak #1” on original HPS List–there once was a #2 in the San Bernardino N.F. \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway north of Pasadena\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy (SR 2). Just past the Switzer Falls parking\, you’ll see a turn out on the left at mile marker 34.50. You can park here. If parking is full\, there are a coupe other turnouts if you keep driving up the road. \nCarpooling/Caravaning: A good area to consolidate vehicles is at an area many hikers use just north of the 210 on the 2 fwy. On Angeles Crest Hwy turn right on the second street north of the 210\, Milmada Drive and then take an immediate left on the street that parallels the Angeles Crest. I will leave this location at 7:45. \n**************************\n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon and the Western Plateau Loop
DESCRIPTION:We began hiking and exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “Weekday Hikers.” At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting our use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nToday we will do my classic loop as depicted in these\nphotos from May 2015: [https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=25919744](https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=25919744) \n…about 7 miles and 1500′ gain \nWe’ll take our snack break at the KCLU-FM antenna \n**History of Hill Canyon**\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridgelines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \n**Directions to trailhead** \nUse Google Map and drive to address. Park in dirt lot at trailhead or on street near corner with Rancho Conejo Blvd \n“If you’re early\, you’re on time. If you’re on time\, you’re late. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up”

SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:**[3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)**\nNote that we start from the Andora trailhead. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a [snack share social event]((https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is very rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and there are many different ways of returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. The return route may be slightly different than the way up through a parallel path. \n**Hike**\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: Some parts of the trail is very rugged over large stones.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Park in the street. \n**What to bring:**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \n**Hosting**\n*Route*: The host has plotted this route but never taken it.\nNavigation: GPS navigation as needed. Several of our members are familiar with the route from this trailhead. \n*Hike type*: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops*:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include a stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a marking made of baking soda\, or some sticks on the trail forming an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \n*Group separation*:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions**\nStage Coach Trail\, Andora trailhead\n9861 Andora Ave.\nChatsworth\, CA 91311\n34.249626\, -118.619625 \n*From CA-118*\nTopanga Canyon (CA-27) south\, 1.4 mi\nRight (west) on Devonshire St for .4 mi\nLeft (southwest) on Valley Circle for .6 mi\nRight (west) on Lassen for 43 ft.\nLeft (southwest) on Andora for 157 ft. \n**[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions)** \n**[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous)**

SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK (THE PLAYGROUND) - A rock scrambling adventure
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nNEED HELP:\ngo to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nSANTA BARBARA COAST- SERIES OF HIKES \nJoin me on yet another CDH series as I take on the Santa Barbara Coastal Range. We’ll hike a series of trails we’ve taken before that will be interesting with views of the ocean on most of them. Starting north at Gaviota\, we’ll conclude the series in Montecito. This series is definitely meant to be more visual than physical\, thus\, less conditioning but more of a mental enlightenment. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this series offers. \nTHE PLAYGROUND \nThis 5th trek in the Santa Barbara series will take us to The Playground. It’s the name of a large area with many rock towers and subterranean rock formations in the Santa Ynez Mountains of Santa Barbara. It’s about a half mile hike to the Playground with some steep areas along the way. We’ll spend the day exploring all the nooks and crannies this place offers. It’s a must for those that like to explore and rock scramble. Parking is limited in this area\, so it helps to car pool there. The awesome views below of Santa Barbara’s coastline is another reason to come out and enjoy this area with us. After the hike\, you can join me for an optional late lunch debriefing. \nINITIAL MEETUP LOCATION\, DIRECTIONS AND TIME: The Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:30 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about 1.2 hour’s drive to the trailhead. \nFINAL MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: The Playground no later than 9:00 a.m. IT’S HARD TO FIND\n[https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B030’04.4%22N+119%C2%B051’48.5%22W/@34.5012141\,-119.8656519\,17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xa0c214df2ad4e802!8m2!3d34.5012141!4d-119.8634632](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B030’04.4%22N+119%C2%B051’48.5%22W/@34.5012141\,-119.8656519\,17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xa0c214df2ad4e802!8m2!3d34.5012141!4d-119.8634632) \nDISTANCE: 4 miles of exploratory rock scrambling around\, over and under huge boulders. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 1000’/1000′ \nTHE PACE: As fast as the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: 5 hours of ecstasy for our WWW members \nTERRAIN: Single track use trails and lots of rock scrambling \nLEVEL: Intermediate Trekker who loves exploring rock formations \nOPTIONAL LUNCH: After the hike\, I will be debriefing at the Crushcakes and Cafe for lunch\n5392 Hollister Ave\, Goleta\nMENU: [https://www.crushcakes.com/menu/#cafe-lunch](https://www.crushcakes.com/menu/#cafe-lunch) \nMY CELL# IS: 805-358-5972

DESCRIPTION:**[Easy Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 600′ gain](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)** \nThis is a unique loop through Wildwood Park that takes us to the famous Lizard Rock. \nThere are several extended inclines and a few short but steep climbs that cause this to be rated on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions\, and I’ll be putting down white arrows so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road and turn right (west) for 1 block\, where we’ll see an entrance to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll enter and make a right\, following it around past the first set of junctions\, continuing for about 1/4 mile\, and then follow it around to the left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take has past the steps to the trail head parking lot and continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. We make a left\, then the next right to head up to Lizard Rock\, where we’ll [share snacks and beverages](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFinally\, we’ll head back down from the rock\, make a left\, and continue for about 1500′ where it will dead end at the Mesa Trail. We’ll turn right and take this fire road all the way back to the main Wildwood parking lot\, then turn right and follow the road for about 1500′ back to our cars. \n*Returning Early*\nFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. Please follow the posted route and map. \n**Directions**\nWildwood Park\n635 W Avenida De Los Arboles\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \n*From the 118:*\nCA-118 west to CA-23.\nContinue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los Arboles\nTurn right (east) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. SUMMARY:Earl Canyon Road to Mount Lukens
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/earl-canyon-road-to-mount-lukens-road \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nLet’s tackle Mount Lukens from a lesser known route. The summit of Mount Lukens is at 5075 ft and the highest point in Los Angeles. The AllTrails map stops at Mount Lukens Road but we are gonna continue another .25 mile to the towers. Which will give us about a 14 mile hike with 3500 elevation gain. This is a pretty mountain view hike with continuous incline. This hike is not suitable for beginners. And expect a great workout. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 7:15) I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats…https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/earl-canyon-road-to-mount-lukens-road \nTrail out and back\nMiles about 14\nElevation Gain about 3500 ft\nRated hard not suitable for beginners\nDogs allowed\nParking neighborhood street parking \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n1. SUMMARY:Scramble Loop to Camelback from Haines Canyon
DESCRIPTION:I like finding hikes close to home that aren’t always on other people’s radar. This is the best description of the hike to “Mount Camelback” I’ve found: \nOfficially\, as far as I’ve seen on any map\, there is no such place. The Sunland US Topo map does not list this mountain. Really it’s more part of a ridge than a peak but from certain angles\, it does look like the back of a camel due to its pronounced humps. It has been known by this name by the locals for many decades. Camelback can be aproached most directly from the Haines Debris Basin\, though it is far from a quaint afternoon hike in the hills. \nTHE PLAN \nTHERE IS A VERY STEEP SCRAMBLE RIDGE. Please read the write up and stats before signing up. \nWe will start at Haines Cyn and follow a trail along the foothills that will allow us a bit of a warm up before the fun begins. Three miles in\, we will meet up with the Kill ‘Em Quick trail. Here we will gain over 1000’ of elevation in just one mile. There are about 30 switchbacks that will lead us to a ridge. Be prepared for rock scrambling. The plan is to connect to Camelback – a point we reached last year that has amazing views of the valley and surrounding areas. This is where we’ll take our lunch break before heading down a couple miles of steep trail back to our cars. \nThere will be a couple places to stop\, catch our breath\, take in the views and regroup. \nImportant notes: \nEXPLORATORY \nBUSHWHACKING \nBRING POLES \nMORE WATER THAN YOU THINK YOU’LL NEED \nEXTRA TIME TO FIND PARKING – SEE FARZAN RULE \nVERY\, VERY STEEP \nSTATS \nDistance: 8 Miles \nElevation Gain: 2500 ft \nDuration: 5 hours \nTrail: Fire road and single track\, w/areas of deteriorating trails and steep\, uneven downhills\, possible bushwhacking \nRating: 7/10\, due to trail condition and gain \nParking pass: Not needed \nNot for beginners – no sweep!! We’ll be keeping a moderate pace and regrouping as needed. \nTHE STORY \nA couple of local residents made some cool videos of their crazy adventures. One of them was an exploration of an abandoned detention center and the trail the juvenile detainees maintained as part of their training program: \n“The Kill ‘Em Quick Trail was built by juvenile offenders detained at nearby Camp Routh\, a LA County probation department fire camp\, abandoned in 2009. Camp Routh had a program that trained some of the detainees to fight forest fires. As part of the training requirements\, these detainees had to make it up the ridge in under 30 mins wearing their forest fire gear\, some carrying chainsaws. \n“In one of the abandoned buildings\, there’s an old whiteboard with the Kill ‘Em Quick climber rankings\, a competitive list of times between detainees\, staff and the fire department.” One of the probation officers set the record with a time of just 15 minutes. \nA couple quotes that will let you know what you’re in for: “Is this even a trail?” “This trail won’t last if people don’t use it.” “This trail is gnarly.” Sounds like a VHC hike to me. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom the 210 fwy take the Lowell Ave exit to Honolulu Ave. Go west. It veers right and turns into Tujunga Cyn Blvd. In just over a mile and a half turn right on Haines Cyn Ave. Make a right on Day St and a left to join Haines Cyn again. Though we will be meeting at the very end of Haines\, there isn’t much parking there so grab any available parking spot you see when you’re on Haines or turn left on Apperson St to look for a spot. \nWe will meet at the gate at the end of Haines. Please keep in mind this is a residential neighborhood – keep any noise to a minimum. \n*** Allow yourself a few extra minutes to find parking and walk to the trailhead. \n**************************\n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing.

SUMMARY:Coquina Mine Trail (Loop)
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/coquina-mine-trail–3 \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nWe have another request to do this trail again…Will be hiking to Coquina Mine in Simi Valley. A little history on the trail from Alltrails…. ” This was a mining operation that started in 1929 and ceased in year 1935. Limestone was mined here for an extremely pure form of Calcium Carbonate (Calcite CaCO3) As you start to travel further up the trail you’ll find abandoned mining equipment with large boulders of both Limestone and Fossils. The trail will end at the mining site with the largest mining equipment abandoned there. This was a strip mining operation so there are no shafts or adits ” This trail is a out and back but will will be doing this as a loop trail. \nTrail mileage about 7 miles\nElevation gain about 1100 ft\nDogs allowed\nWill be a loop trail\nRated Moderate hike\nFree street parking \nThis hike will Start off on a paved road for about 200 feet then becomes a dirt fire road through a Canyon until we turn off to make our climb to Coquina Mine. From here we will be on a single track trail. Once we leave the top of Coquina Mine we will make our way back down to a split were we will start our loop. This section will be narrow and follows the side of a mountain were will follow the backside mountains of Simi Valley. Most of the trail will be in mountain ranges and canyons with no views of housing or commercial buildings. Generally a lot of wildlife in this area so hopefully we will get lucky to see some within eyesight. Just a friendly reminder to please bring enough water for the entire duration of the hike as well as snacks.\nI will load a AllTrails link below that will give you directions to the trailhead location.as well as pics of the trail stats ratings map ect. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/coquina-mine-trail–3 \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike \nLast thing we will follow Jims most important rules.. \n1. Hike Your Own Hike\n2. Stop at all splits or junctions on the trail for others to catch up \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. SUMMARY:Cheseboro Canyon MTB trail potluck hike - fit beginner
DESCRIPTION:**Fit Beginner 4.3 miles\, 480′ gain.**\nThere is an out-and-back option that lowers the gain to 230′. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nPot Luck guidelines: [https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) \nWe’ll [share snacks and drinks](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 60-90 minutes\, then return by completing the loop (or returning the way we came if it’s very hot). \n**Fun Facts** \nSo what is MTB?\nAnswer: Mountain Bike (not Mountain Terrain Bike)\nRef: https://pedalchile.com/blog/mtb-meaning\nThe name I see on a map is: Chesebro Canyon MTB Trail \n**Hosting** \n*Route*\nThe host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. The host may vary the route slightly. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \n*Hike type*: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops*:\nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind. \n**Interesting Notes** \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \n*[Black Sage](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/3/c/2/highres_503525058.jpeg)*\nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \n*[Yellow Star Thistle](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/3/c/8/highres_503525064.jpeg)*\nThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing. Permanent brain damage is possible\, and affected horses may starve to death. Used in Turkish folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers. In a laboratory study\, aqueous extracts of fresh or dried flowers of yellow star thistle given orally showed significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats. \n**Other**\nDogs allowed? Yes \n**Directions** \n0.4 miles from the corner of Cheseboro and Palo Comado Cyn Rd.\nThere is parking off the street at this location. After the 1 lane bridge\, you’ve gone too far. \nCheseboro Canyon MTB trail\n5402 Chesebro Rd\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \n*From I-101*:\nExit Chesebro Rd..Palo Comado Canyon Rd.\nContinue north. SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, gain: 500′\, beginner \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. The hike starts at the trail head near the Tampa exit on I-118\, just 3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop (from the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. We’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. We’ll continue for about 2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, and then travel about 20 yards west and taking a different trail back into the Canyon. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll return to the original trail for the return. Soon\, we’ll take a slightly different route by making a right off the trail\, but it still returns back to the original trail after a short distance. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 yards\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event [snack and beverage share](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the right and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings on the return\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. In general\, it won’t matter if you choose incorrectly from this point because all the splits end up going the same way. \n**Interesting Notes:** \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \n*[California Buckwheat](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/9/0/c/highres_501506892.jpeg)* \nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \n*[Laurel Sumac](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/9/0/d/highres_501506893.jpeg)* \nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \n**Directions:**\nLimekiln Canyon Trail\nPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \n*From the 118*\nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.\nLeft (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.\nTrailhead on the right (north).\nPark on either side of the street. \n*From the 101 @ CA23*\nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 miles\nEast I-118 for 18 miles.\nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.\nLeft (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.\nTrailhead on the right (north).\nPark on either side of the street. \n**The Hike**\nDistance: 4 miles\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Easy\nPace: 2.5 mph\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.\nTrail: Varied. SUMMARY:Gaviota Peak\, Hot Spring Loop and Beyond (with Camping Option)
DESCRIPTION:**Gaviota Peak**\, at 2\,458 feet\, offers eye-popping views up and down the coast. You can look east clear across **Santa Barbara**\, and west across Lompoc toward Point Conception. In between is vast sea adorned by Channel Islands that hover on the horizon. To the north\, gentle rolling hills frame the fertile Santa Ynez Valley. \nWe’ll begin on the wide **Gaviota Peak Trail**. On the way up to the mountains we’ll stop and visit the milky blue waters and sulfur bubbles of **Gaviota Hot Springs** (aka Las Cruces Hot Springs). It’s a natural spring that was built up with concrete many years ago. \n*I will be extending the classic 7-mile Gaviota Peak loop hike to about 11 miles* \nA little before we get to the peak we will turn onto the **Campbell Trail** and extend the hike another 4 miles. It is currently abandoned by the US Forest Service because they do not want hikers to discover any **Chumash archeological sites**. We’ll be hiking along **Las Canovas Creek** for a bit and the trail may be overgrown with scrub and poison oak in some places. But I’ve heard it is a very nice trail 😉 \nWe’ll take our lunch/snack break at **Corrie Meadows.** I expect the meadow will be filled with wildflowers and a tiny little creek. \nWe’ll return to the classic loop along **West Camino Cielo Rd\,** bag Gaviota Peak and head back toward the Pacific via the **Trespass Trail\,** a narrow singe-track with stunning ocean views. Then its back to the trail head along **Tunnel View Trail** offering a view of the **Gaviota Tunnel.** \nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to length and terrain. See the [Hike Rating Guide](https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/) \n**POST HIKE GATHERING AND OPTIONAL CAMPING**\nI’ve reserved **campsite #3 at** [Gaviota State Park Campground](https://goo.gl/maps/JJioDUMfBNiuYntz5) and after the hike everyone is invited back to my campsite for potluck lunch\, drinks\, etc. There is a day-use lot but at the time of this writing I do not know the parking fee. \nMy reservation is from 04/26/22 2:00 PM – 04/28/22 12:00 PM – let me know if you will also be reserving a spot and I will organize more events – there are many more trails nearby \n**DIRECTIONS TO TRAIL HEAD**\nUse [Google Maps](https://goo.gl/maps/1gRBx5NYwsoJguJM7) and follow directions to map pin. According to my latest info there is $2 parking fee that requires exact change. Look for the envelope thingy. We’ll meet at the Gaviota Peak Trail trail head by the map pin

SUMMARY:Mount Wilson via Little Santa Anita Canyon
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mt-wilson-via-little-santa-anita-canyon \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nOkay let’s face it\, hiking on foot there is no easy way to get to the top of Mount Wilson. This is actually one of my favorite ways\, and it’s also the original route to the top. A lot of history on this trail. Will encounter shaded areas loaded with green vegetation a lot of incline (a lot) with open views with the towers at the top coming within view. Once at the top we are gonna make our way to the peak and if the cafe is open will stop for food. Expect a long day with closer to 16 miles and elevation gain closer to 5\,000. This is one of the 6 pack of peaks. Not recommended for beginners. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 7:00) I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats…https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mt-wilson-via-little-santa-anita-canyon \nTrail out and back\nMiles about 16 (with the walk to the peak)\nElevation Gain about 5\,000 ft\nRated hard not for beginners\nDogs allowed (must be conditioned for a harder longer hike)\nParking neighborhood street parking \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. SUMMARY:Bulldog Loop Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/bulldog-loop \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nYour in for a treat if you have never hiked this trail. Will be starting our hike out of Malibu Creek State Park. Will be passing through the Mash and Planet of the Apes filming locations. Will also be taking some side trails to see both Century Lake and Rock Pond so expect our hike to be closer to 16 miles and our elevation gain closer to 3200-3400 ft. Will eventually come onto the Bulldog trail and will start our huffing and puffing (that will be me) there. The trail will take us to the a portion of the Backbone trail which is one of the most unige sections of the Backbone. Will be going up and on some of the rock formations (no climbing required) It will feel and look like you’re now in AZ or New Mexico. Will also take a quick side trail (if I can remember it) to Jim Morrison’s (from the Doors) secret spot where he wrote all his music. Will finally start our descent down a Canyon on the other side of the Mountain were we will start looping back. Some reviews stated it was hard to find the trail back at the last portion to there cars so they walked a short distance on the road but we will try to stay on trails only but just noted incase. We are also gonna start our hike out of Malibu Creek State Park as it accommodates more vehicles and the starting point on AllTrails only accommodates about 8 cars and it is a very popular spot as it has no fee. Malibu Creek State Park is a $10 fee. If you would like to find road parking which is free or start at the AllTrails spot please just make your way into MCSP and will be waiting at the restrooms next to the parking lot. Please note this is a hard trail and not suited for beginner hikers. I have attached the AllTrails link for pics\, and stats: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/california/bulldog-loop?mobileMap=false&ref=sidebar-static-map \nTrail loop\nMiles closer to 16\nElevation Gain about 3200-3400 ft\nRated hard\nDogs unfortunately not allowed in MCSP\nParking paved lot $10 fee\, road and alternate dirt lots in the area are free but fill up fast \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n1. SUMMARY:Dragon's Back Scramble to Cathedral\, Arlington and La Cumbre
DESCRIPTION:Scramble lovers only! This one has been on my list for a while. Full disclosure – I have not done this route before. There are different options on the scramble up so we will look for the one that best suits the group. Limiting to those I’m comfortable climbing with since it will be a long day on the rocks. There will be almost 2000′ of gain in the second mile so be sure to read the write up to know what you’re signing up for. \nNOT FOR BEGINNERS! \nNO SWEEP!! \nSTATS \nDistance: ~9 miles \nElevation: >3400 \nLevel: 9/10 \nTrail: SCRAMBLING!! Single track\, bushwhacking\, route finding \nDuration: 7+ hours\, bring snacks and/or lunch \nParking pass/fee: NO \nCome prepared!! Bring: \nPLENTY OF WATER – bring more than you think you’ll need \nELECTROLYTES \nSNACKS/LUNCH \nSUN PROTECTION – this is an exposed ridge \nGLOVES \nPOLES \nTHE PLAN \nThis is known as one of the toughest hikes around but worth the spectacular views. It is an exposed scramble and not recommended for those not comfortable with this type of terrain. Bring more water than you think you’ll need. Electrolytes are also a good idea. Gloves\, poles and long sleeves/pants may also be helpful. \nWe’ll follow the paved road through the lower part of Mission Canyon. It will wind through chaparral and over boulders. Once we reach a small rock outcropping\, we’ll have a view of Seven Falls – something to look forward to on another day. The trail heads steeply up the ridge through interesting sandstone formations to the summit of Arlington Peak. From here\, our next peak is visible. We’ll take a use trail off the north side of Arlington along a ridge to reach Cathedral Peak. There will be class 3 scrambling but this area should have good handholds. Lunch break will likely be somewhere along the way. \nThe trail to La Cumbre Peak is overgrown and may be difficult to follow. From the summit of Cathedral\, we will drop down across rocky ledges towards the saddle between Cathedral and La Cumbre. We’ll look for another use trail to take to the summit of La Cumbre where we’ll take a short break and regroup before heading back down. \nDirections: From downtown Santa Barbara\, take State St to Mission Blvd and turn right. Follow Mission Blvd to the Santa Barbara Mission. Drive up Mission Canyon Rd and turn right. After several hundred yards\, near the fire station\, turn left. Continue up Mission Canyon. At the fork in the road\, take the left fork up Tunnel Rd and continue several miles to the end. Parking is available on the right side of the road. \nCarpool/Caravan: please post a comment or arrange a private carpool\, if you’d like. Park and rides along the 101 fwy are options for meeting locations. I will likely be coming from the Goleta area so won’t be available to meet but you can message me if you need help arranging a ride. \n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************
