SUMMARY:Sage Ranch Lollipop - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:As of July 7\, 2020\, the first part of the clockwise loop was closed\, but we found a new and cooler route with a perfect place for a snack-share\, complete with picnic table. \nWe’ll head up the ramp and begin the hike counter-clockwise. This ramp will be the only significant incline\, but is still suitable for fit beginners (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). It is paved\, runs 1/4 mile\, and about 125′ of gain. It will get your blood pumping\, but that’s OK because this is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike. \n \nWe’ll continue until we see a trail junction heading to the right and behind the rocks. We’ll follow it around and go up on the rocks to a secret area where the rock has been carved out. \nAfter\, we’ll continue back to the main trail and follow it the rest of the way around. When we come to a sign that says “detour” because the path forward is closed\, we’ll take the detour. \nShortly after the detour starts\, there will be a picnic table. \nWe’ll decide on the hike itself\, whether to have the social event where the rock has a circle carved out\, or at the picnic table on the return half of the loop. \nIt is a steady climb up most of the way back\, but fit beginners can handle it. It will eventually lead us back to the top parking lot. From there\, we’ll take the asphalt path and down to our cars. \nNote that we have been scolded in the past by the ranger for being on the trail after dark here\, so we’ll try to get back to our cars by dark. \nWe’ll stop whenever necessary to regroup. \n \nOther than what was mentioned earlier in this description\, all of the gain is distributed with no difficult or extended elevation climbs. This hike has all the look and feel you would expect of a mountain hike in this area. Most of the walk is a well maintained rocky trail. \nThis takes us through Sage Ranch Park\, with interesting rock formations all around\, a very cool overlook onto the valley at the half way point\, and even an overlook onto part of the old Santa Suzanna nuclear test facility. \nBelow is a picture of Turtle Rock. \n \nAbout the parking: \nThere are two spots to park. The first (where we will meet)\, is right at the entrance along the west edge of Black Canyon Rd. This is a free gravel lot\, but parking is limited to about 30 cars. \nIf the free lots gets filled\, continue about 500′ west up a steep incline\, where there is another lot with payment required via self-pay envelopes. In early 2018\, it was $5. If you plan on parking in this lot\, bring exact change. \nFor this hike\, we’ll walk up to this lot\, so you can wait there of you don’t want to make the climb from the lower lot to the upper lot. \nThe park is officially open from sunrise to sunset. Prior postings for this hike\, had this warning: If you do park in the pay lot\, be sure you return before sunset\, else risk a ticket or being locked in by a ranger. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor marries well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \n \nYerba SantaSaint Herb\, Holy Plant\, Mountain Balm. \nThe Spanish who came to early California were so impressed with the plant that they gave it the name Yerba Santa. \nLeaves were chewed to relieve dry mouth. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma\, coughs\, colds\, headaches\, and stomachaches. Infusions of Yerba Santa leaves and flowers were used to treat fevers\, coughs\, colds\, stomachaches\, asthma\, rheumatism pleurisy\, chronic bronchitis\, tuberculosis\, and to purify the blood. Heated leaves were placed on the forehead to relieve headaches and other aches and sores. \nThe sticky leaves stay in place upon the skin. Mashed leaves were applied externally to sores\, cuts\, wounds\, insect bites\, and aching muscles. Mashed leaves were also used to reduce the swelling and relieve pain caused by bone fractures. The branches and leaves were burned in steam baths to treat rheumatism and hemorrhoids. Contains chemicals that are thought to loosen mucus in the chest and may increase urination. \n \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 3 milesDuration: 3.5 hoursElevation Gain: 560′Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit BeginnerPace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes if leashed\, per State lawRestrooms: Yes\, at the start\, but you may have to walk up a 1/4 mile incline to get to it.Drinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start\, but you have to walk up a 1/4 mile incline and down into the picnic area to get to it.Parking: Free in the gravel lot\, $5 to park up the incline at the top.Trail: Fire Road and rocky trail\, good condition.Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall \nWhat to Bring:1-2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:Mt. Baldy via the Ski-Hut then to the Backbone and the Notch (Conditioning Hike)
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Intermediate Hikers. You should have Mt. Baldy Summit experience via the Backbone Trail beforehand. \n \nDistance: 9 miles \nElevation Gain: ~4\,000 ft. \nMax elevation : 10\,064 ft. \nRating: 8/10 Strenuous \nPace: Sauntering \nTrail: Looped some pavement\, fire roads\, but mostly single track and rocky trails \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks \nHiking Poles (Optional) \nLayered clothing (possibly windy & chilly at the summit) \nMoney for ski lift (optional) and grub from The Notch \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=91759&searchType=WEATHER) \nNOTE: \nThis is considered a high altitude hike and high altitude sickness\, AKA acute mountain sickness\, is a possibility. Good Physical health is important. The San Antonio Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail is considered the most direct route to the summit of Mount Baldy (10\,064′). This climb is considered strenuous. \nAs you start up the fire road you will soon enjoy views of the San Antonio Falls. Continuing on you will pick-up a use trail that climbs northwest along San Antonio Canyon through Jeffrey and Lodgepole Pines eventually reaching the San Antonio Ski Hut. From here you stand at the base of the Baldy Bowl with its dramatic ridgeline which ascends as much as 1600 feet over the Ski Hut. Most people will then cross the bowl and follow the switchbacks up through the trees. Once you reach the top of the bowl continue on up to the summit where you will enjoy fine views of the San Gabriel Mountains including Mount Baden-Powell\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/150664/baden-powell.html)Iron Mountain\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/150975/iron-mountain-1.html)Pine Mountain\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/150950/pine-mountain.html)Dawson Peak\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/196829/dawson-peak.html)Ontario Peak\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/154873/ontario-peak.html) and many others. Looking south you will look down on the San Gabriel Valley and on exceptional days the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. \nMount San Antonio\, also known as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy\, at 10\,068 ft\, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains\, and the highest point in Los Angeles County. The peak\, which marks a boundary between San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County is called Baldy because of the absence of trees around the summit. Mt. Baldy is visible from much of Southern California and much of Southern California can be seen from it’s summit on a clear day. It is one of the most photographed objects of the Southern California landscape It’s snow covered peak has appeared on post cards and tourist literature for many years. There are four popular routes to the summit. All are considered moderate hikes of 8.5 to 13 miles round trip and anywhere from 3\,600 feet to 6\,000 feet of elevation gain. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \n******************************************************************* \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\nAn HDW original\, we’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008!  Dogs are ok on this one. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. So let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak-and sycamore-shaded canyons and eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights \nWe’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie\, and will take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET. \nThe video below shows the location of our hike. The maker did an excellent job in juxtaposing scenes from ET with present day shots. Pay particularly close attention to the opening shots\, the dirt path a bicycle is riding on\, and the van driving into a park. We will be hiking over and through these locations.\n\n\n \n\n\n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8.3 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nLoading ...\nDirections:\nHead for the North Valley YMCA on Corbin Ave. The trail head is on the right (if you are traveling north) just before the YMCA sign. Park on street.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\nhttps://www.meetup.com/localhikers/events/278285053/[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Corral\, Puerco Cyn & Malibu Seafood
DESCRIPTION:Weather should be nice for a coastal hike. \nLunching at Malibu Seafood after – BYOB! \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 8 miles \nElevation Gain: 2000 ft. \nRating: 6/10 \nTrail: Single Track\, Fire Road\, rock scrambling and some overgrown Billie Goat trails \nDuration: 4-6 hours \nThe Plan \nWe’ll start on the Corral Canyon Trail and quickly head over to Puerco Canyon where we’ll be exploring some abandoned buildings along the way as we head uphill in the direction of the Backbone Trail. We’ll eventually come to a point overlooking Pepperdine University. It’s at this point we’ll be going on some lessor used and overgrown trails. Anyone able to bring garden clippers and help clean up the trail a bit would be great. Once we get back to a trail we’ll be looping around back to another portion of the Puerco Motorway. Eventually we will head back to the Coral Canyon trails completing our loop. \nMap (http://www.lamountains.com/maps/corralCanyon.pdf) \nDirections: Malibu Seafood is located on Pacific Coast Hwy about 1.8 miles west of Malibu Canyon Rd. The map in the link above is accurate. Free parking is located along PCH\, pay parking is located at the Coral Canyon Trail Head parking lot just east of the Malibu Seafood parking lot. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing.

SUMMARY:Cheseboro Canyon MTB trail potluck hike - fit beginner
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 4.3 miles\, 480′ gain.If it’s too hot\, we’ll change the return and make this an out-and-back instead of a loop\, which lowers the gain to 230′. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share and your own cup\, plate and utensils. We’ll share snacks and drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for about 60 minutes\, then return by completing the loop (or returning the way we came if it’s very hot). \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. If others follow\, it is group hijacking: Incorrect routes may be taken and group splitting may occur. Please don’t do this. \nDirections \n0.4 miles from the corner of Cheseboro and Palo Comado Cyn Rd.There is parking off the street at this location. If you go over the 1 lane bridge\, you’ve gone too far. \nCheseboro Canyon MTB trail5402 Chesebro Rd\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \nFrom I-101:Exit Chesebro Rd..Palo Comado Canyon Rd.Continue north. SUMMARY:Talopop - Suitable for fit beginners
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 4.1 miles\, 720′ gain. This is a cooler location compared to Simi Valley and surrounding areas. \nIs it Talepop or Talopop? Maps and signs that I have seen\, use the 2nd spelling\, but a lot of references use the other. \nThere are several portions with extended inclines that will make a beginner hiker stop for a breather. \nThere is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. A couple of the inclines\, while not extreme\, continue for about 1000 steps\, and there are also several hills that are about 100 steps each. We won’t be hiking this trail at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nWe’ll meet in front of the facilities building at the center of the park. This is a lollipop hike. \nSome of the hike is fire road\, and a lot of the hike is single-track. Some has complete exposure to the sun\, and some is through shaded wooded areas. \n \nWe’ll head behind the facilities building in the center and head left down the Las Virgenes Trail. After 1/3 mile\, the trail turns 90 degrees\, we continue on the easier route for 1/10th mile instead of taking the trail that climbs the hill\, and it becomes the Talopop Trail. \nWe’ll follow it around for another 1.8 miles until it dead ends at Liberty Canyon Trail. There\, we’ll wait for others to catch up\, and we can share some beverages and/or snacks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) before continuing. \nWe’ll turn left and after 1/3 mile\, the trail dead ends again at Las Virgenes Fire Road. We’ll turn left again and travel 1.1 miles where we’ll hit another junction\, turning right back onto Las Virgenes Trail for the final 0.4 mile return\, making a left at the split right behind the facilities building. \n \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \n \nCalifornia Sagebrush – Artemesia Californica \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nAn infusion can be made for an insect repellent. \n \nDirections: \nTalopopJuan Bautista de Anza Park3701 Lost Hills RoadCalabasas\, CA 91301 \nFrom the 118 \nWest to CA-23 southCA-23 south for 7.4 milesUS-101 east for 9.5 milesExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.Lost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 milesPark on the right. \nFrom the 101 \nExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.Lost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 milesPark on the right. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 4.1 miles\, 3 hours\, counter-clockwiseElevation Gain: 720′Distribution: Reasonably well distributed\, some of the gain on the return portion.Shape: LollipopDifficulty: Easy-IntermediatePace: 2.0 mphDuration: 3.5 hoursDogs: NoRestrooms: Yes\, at the start.Drinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start.Parking: Free in the paved lot\, or along the street..Trail: Fire Road and single track\, good condition. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. \nHere is a picture of the route. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the below route so they can safely return on their own. \n \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. If others follow\, it is group hijacking: Incorrect routes may be taken and group splitting may occur. \nWhat to Bring:2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Los Pinetos from Walker Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Walker Ranch Trailhead. Hike will be out and back and under 7mi. After the hike we will join Sara’s event at Placerita Canyon Nature Center picnic area. \nNot for beginners \nLength: <7 miles \nElevation Gain: 1800 ft. \nRating: 7/10 \nDuration: 3 hours \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. DO NOT ENTER HERE keep driving about 2 miles? the trailhead is on the right. Map above is accurate. \n***************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Placerita Beginner Hike\, Picnic\, 10 Essentials Review
DESCRIPTION:Changing it up a bit since it’s going to be hot this weekend. Let’s welcome summer with a beginner friendly social event. Come for the 3.5 mile hike and stay for the post hike activities OR just show up for the after hike meet and greet\, BYO food and drinks picnic\, and review of the 10 Essentials. \nThe 10 Essentials are the contents of a backpack EVERY HIKER should carry on EVERY HIKE – plus we’ll go over about 15 more items I always have on hand. What item have you found most helpful on your adventures? Anyone who would like to share is more than welcome. \nThis event is geared towards those who are starting out on the trails. The stories and notifications of lost or unprepared hikers lately seems to be increasing. It’s a good time to go over the basics\, whether with a group or on your own. This is as close as we get to a beginner hike and we hope to see some new faces. Read the descriptions below and choose the best option for you. \nBRING \nYour regular backpack and water for the hike \nFood and drinks for after the hike \nA chair\, blanket or pad to sit on \nNote taking supplies \nThere are a couple of options here (plus an earlier longer hike\, posting soon) so read carefully: \nPlacerita Web Site (http://www.placerita.org/index.html) \nOption 1: 7:30 am start – Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch 3.5 miles out and back \nOption 2: 9:30 am start – Post hike BYO picnic\, meet and greet\, 10 essentials review \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free and the map above is accurate. \n7:30 am Option 1: \nSTATS \nLength: 3.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 300 ft. \nRating: 2/10 \nTrail: single track\, Creek bed. \nDuration: 2 hours \nWrite up is Don’s: \nTHE PLAN \nThe hike takes you from the Placerita Nature Center parking lot to Walker Ranch via the Canyon trail with only 250 foot elevation gainOutside the Nature Center in Placerita Canyon you will spot a large sign labeled “Main Trailhead\,” pointing you in the direction of a half dozen park trails. Walk past the sign and across Placerita Creek to the start of Canyon Trail on the south bank. Turn left and begin hiking up this level path alongside the creek. \nThe trail primarily sticks with the south side of the creek\, following the canyon east up a gradual grade to Walker Ranch. If you are in the mood to linger beneath the sycamores\, there are three benches along Canyon Trail where you can stop and relax. There are also posts every half-mile to let you know where you stand between Walker Ranch and the Nature Center. \nThree-quarters of a mile from the start\, you will pass through a dramatic kink in the canyon where the canyon walls become steep and pinch together. The canyon widens again as you continue up the trail. \nJust after the 1.5-mile marker\, you will pass a small pool on the right side of the trail. This is a miniature oil seep where “white oil” naturally bubbles to the surface. \nCanyon Trail slips through a grove of live oaks to arrive at Walker Ranch\, which has been converted into a group campground. Passing picnic tables and fire rings\, you will spot an impressive stone fireplace left over from one of the cottages built by Frank Walker and his family on this site a century ago. THIS IS OUR DESTINATION! \nAfter a quick snack break and regrouping\, we will return the same way we came. \n \n9:30 am Option 2: \nMeet at the picnic tables across the bridge. Bring your own food and drinks\, chairs or blankets and something to take notes with. Also bring whatever you usually have with you on a hike – some backpacks are equipped with certain features and I’d like everyone to become familiar with their own packs. Once we settle in with our food\, we’ll go over the 10+ essentials every hiker should carry with them at all times and some tips for a more pleasurable hike. Workshop is free but donations are welcome. Some materials will be provided. \nPlacerita Canyon Nature Center is open to the public. It has beautiful shady trees with tables below to picnic on. From placerita.org: \nPlacerita is an east-west running canyon featuring cool\, shaded oak groves\, a willow and sycamore-lined seasonal stream and numerous other interesting plant and animal communities. \nThe historic “Oak of the Golden Dream” is the site of California’s original gold discovery in 1842. \nNEW! Click here for an in-depth look at the Oak of the Golden Dream story (video.) \nAnother landmark is the Walker Cabin \, built by Frank Walker in 1920 for his family. \nA network of self-guiding nature\, history and hiking trails radiates out into the park from the Center\, with longer hikes leading to a seasonal waterfall and to the top of the Santa Clarita Divide. Picnicking is available near the Nature Center. \nThe park encompasses oak woodland\, chaparral\, and riparian plant communties on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains southeast of the City of Santa Clarita. The park not only serves to conserve a slice of the wild environment but also endeavors to educate the public on the value of undisturbed flora and fauna through wild animal presentations\, nature hikes\, and self-guided educational trails. \nPlease feel free to contact the Nature Center at (661) 259-7721 if you have any questions. http://www.placerita.org/ \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \n \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have our typical snack-share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \n \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 take the Ventu Park exit (3 miles north/west of the 23) and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so please keep the noise down. \nWe will meet not quite at the end of the road. We’ll cross a gate along the side of the street and across from the houses\, then move 100 yards to the right and enter the trail. \nHike Distance: 3.0 milesGain: 800′Distribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Double track\, single track.Duration: 4 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy CC Loop - Suitable for Fit Beginners.
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThere is one extended climb in the middle of the hike that is relatively mild (it is fire road) but continues for about a mile. Being a fire road\, steepness is limited to that which a vehicle can climb. \nStarting from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses. Note that is not heading UP from the trail head. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a hard left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail back to the parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted at the end of the description. \nInteresting Notes: \nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \n \n \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched \n \nElderberry – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \n \n \nHike \nDistance: 3 milesGain: 650Distribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner.Shape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.Trail Variations:The beginning is a flat walk. The middle will have an extended incline of about 1000 steps. The end is downhill\, but somewhat steep.Duration: 3.0 hoursDogs: Yes. Leash as required by law.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. If others follow\, it is group hijacking: Incorrect routes may be taken and group splitting may occur. Please don’t do this. \nDirections: \nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101:North CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.Right (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.Right (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.Right at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27:West CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.Left (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.Cross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot. \nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130Address of a nearby house: 597 Shadow Ln.\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nArrive early\, because sometimes the parking lot gets full. If this happens\, we’ll need another 15 minutes to carpool from a nearly parking lot. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/
