SUMMARY:🥂🎂Birthday & 👴Retirement Hike - Lunch at Malibu Seafood
DESCRIPTION:My 65th birthday and retirement day is coming up\, and I can’t wait to celebrate with my hiking buddies at one of our favorite hiking and post-hike lunching spots. \nI am planning a hike in Corral Canyon with lunch at Malibu Seafood and you are cordially invited. SO SAVE THE DATE! \nThe great thing about Malibu Seafood — besides the food and beach views — is they allow you to bring your own beverages (including alcohol) and they are located at the trailhead so no driving required. Leave your beverages in the car until you return from hike. \nI’ll be arranging two hikes: one easy and one medium. Stay tuned for details. \nFree street parking is available

SUMMARY:Sunday hike
DESCRIPTION:The Keyhole 7 memorial bench was installed in April 2016 as a tribute to our friends we lost in Zion in September 2015. It survived the fire that swept through the area in May earlier this year. Let’s pay it a visit in remembrance of those we lost. \nWe will be taking the Garapito Trail to Eagle Rock and come back via the fire road but you could come either way if you know the area. We’ll be taking a break at Eagle Rock so bring snacks or lunch. \nSTATS \nDistance: 9 miles \nRating: 5/10 \nElevation gain: 1750 \nDon’s write up \nEagle Rock\, located in Topanga SP\, is the primary attraction of this hike. It juts impressively out from the hillside\, with dramatic shear cliffs on three sides. There is easy access to the top of Eagle Rock from the trail. The usual route to Eagle Rock is via Topanga SP\, but that would be too short for our group as we’re a bit more adventurous. This hike starts from the Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park at the south end of Reseda Blvd. This will be a combination of trails and fire roads. We start off with .05 miles of fire roads and then take the Bent Arrow Trail to the Garapito Trail the remaining 3 miles to Eagle Rock where we’ll take a short break before returning on fire roads to our cars on Reseda. The Garapito Trail is where we get our bonus ab workout due to the necessity to avoid so many low branches. As usual bring ample supplies of liquid refreshment\, snacks\, sunscreen and dress accordingly depending on the weather conditions. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed in state parks. \nDirections: Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park is located on the southern end of Reseda Blvd. in Tarzana\, 3.2 miles south of the Ventura Fwy. The park and parking are at the end of Reseda Blvd. There is a white line across the road to mark where the fee parking starts and an “Iron Ranger” to pay the fee. Park before the line for free. Be aware as there is a “photo-enforced” stop sign in the area. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. SUMMARY:Los Padres - Hike with Potluck Picnic stop
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate. \nA fit beginner can handle this. This is rated Easy Intermediate (easy end of the intermediate spectrum) because there are a couple extended inclines. This is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and climb up to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll take a split off to the right and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench at the top. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to a picnic table\, we’ll stop for a social event. Let’s call it the “Giant’s Picnic Table” because of the thick pieces of wood used. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. \nWe’ll share snacks and drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map posted with description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \nHike Distance: 3.5 milesGain: 600′Distribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Loop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.Trail Variations:Several extended inclines of 1000 steps.Several steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.Duration: 3.0 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/bootsFlashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \nYucca \nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \nWild Cucumber \nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \nDirections \nLos Padres Trailhead15 Los Padres Dr.Thousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101:West of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. Moorpark Rd.South on Moorpark Rd. north for 1000 ft.Left on Los Padres Dr.After 200 ft\, trailhead on the right.Park on the street. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Sudden-Cross Town Trail to Teepee
DESCRIPTION:Hiking to the teepee in honor of our Keyhole friends. Join me if you can\, I know its sudden and weather is still warm but hoping it will be cooler at 6:30pm. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the sunset and look at the city lights. \nThere are sections of the trail that are very steep and slippery so poles would be helpful. Bring a headlamp as well. I will mark the trail for those who can’t make the start time or who want to go up at their own pace. This is a residential neighborhood so please be mindful of noise. \nStats \nDistance: <4 Miles \nElevation Gain: ~1300 ft. \nDuration: 3+ hours \nTrail: Fire road and single track\, some areas are very steep and slippery. \nRating: 5-6/10 \nWrite-up is Don’s: \nThe Story \nBoth the ascent and descent are fire roads/breaks or single uneven trails. The views are enjoyable at night. There are also a few interesting landmarks up there\, such as a TeePee. \nDirections: \nFrom the 210 Freeway exit Angeles Crest Hwy (2) North as if you were going to Mt. Wilson. Shortly after the first curve will be Harter Lane. Turn Left here and go as far as you can on Harter. \n*********************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

It’ll give you an idea what you’re in for.https://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/30808711/489545270/ \nMEET UP Take Westlake Blvd. exit off the 101 Fwy. in Westlake Village and head south 1.5 miles and turn right on Potrero Rd. Drive 400 yards and turn right on Camberwell Pl. Immediately turn right and park on Margate Pl. per Google Map. The street signs say Potrero Rd. instead of Margate Pl. (Very confusing) \nMEETUP TIME: No later than 8:00 a.m. \nDURATION AND OBJECTIVE: Four plus hours or what ever it takes to accomplish THE TASK (Time Energy Fear Pain Blood Sweat Tears etc.). \nDISTANCE COVERED: 4+ miles – grueling at times \nEXPERIENCE LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE HIKER with rock scrambling skills \nPACE: A fun and comfortable pace for adventurous Trekkers. \nELEVATION GAIN: 1000′ + \nTERRAIN: Easy to rugged and extremely steep with sections of class 3 rock scrambling \nSUGGESTIONS: Bring gloves trekking poles micro spikes and protective clothing \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=CAMBERWELL AND MARGATE PLACE:geo:-118.852946,34.143454

SUMMARY:Ridge Route to Parker Mesa Overlook - Los Liones Loop - Reel Inn
DESCRIPTION:Perched high above the Palisades and Malibu\, the vista from the Parker Mesa Overlook is stunning. You can see all of the LA basin laid out before you\, the San Gabriel Mountains to the north\, Catalina Island to the south\, and the crescent shaped coastline of Santa Monica to the east. \nWe’ll have a post-hike lunch at the Reel Inn. Read on… \nThis isn’t your usual Parker Mesa Hike! Our ridge route starts near the Los Liones Canyon trailhead and makes a bee-line up a ridge to the Overlook with a 1400 ft gain in a mere 1.5 miles. Some parts are steep and loose. You’ve been warned! \nCheck out my Top 10 trekking poles. Order one or two today! https://www.hikingwithdean.com/shop/amazon-top-10/ \n \nAt the top\, on the Parker Mesa Overlook\, there are a couple of benches where we can enjoy one of the most spectacular views of the Los Angeles coastline and a snack. We’ll take an extended break here to allow everyone to catch up \n \nWe will return via the hilly side trails of E Topanga Fireroad\, and the beautiful Los Liones Canyon \n \nThe Los Liones Trail weaves through a lush canyon just a mile from the Pacific Ocean. Slivers of big blue sea can be seen from much of the ivy and chaparral-lined canyon \n***The No Fireroad rule will be in effect!*** \nThis strenuous hike is rated DIFFICULT. Its a relatively short 5-mile loop\, but packs a wallop with about 2100 feet of total ascent. See https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nPost hike lunch will be at the Reel Inn on PCH and Topanga \nDirections \nFrom Santa Monica or Malibu: Take the Pacific Coast Highway and turn on Sunset Boulevard. Go 0.3 miles on Sunset\, take a left on Los Liones and drive half a mile to the end of the street. Park on the right side of the street in the lot across from the church. \nThere is plenty of free street parking\, as well as two lots near picnic areas and restrooms. Hike starts at 9am\, not the parking.

SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate.Note that we are going to start from the Andora trailhead instead of our usual starting place. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a snack share social event (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is very rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and there are many different ways of returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. The return route may be slightly different than the way up through a parallel path. \nThe Route: This is a new route for me\, from suggestions by Adam and David C. The photo of the route was plotted using software. \nHikeDistance: 3.5 milesGain: 800′Distribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.Trail Variations: Some parts of the trail is very rugged over large stones.Duration: 3.0 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: No.Drinking Fountains: No.Parking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHostingRoute: The host has plotted this route but never taken it.Navigation: GPS navigation as needed. Several of our members are familiar with the route from this trailhead. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include a stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a marking made of baking soda\, or some sticks on the trail forming an arrow. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting NotesHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. \nTea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves take on a greyer color. \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. \nBlack sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nDirections: \nStage Coach Trail\, Andora trailhead9861 Andora Ave.Chatsworth\, CA 91311 \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Mission Peak from Neon Way Conditioning Hike
DESCRIPTION:Description:The hike ascends to Mission Point\, aka Mission Peak\, via the Mario A DeCampos Trail. The peak is the second highest summit in the Santa Susana mountain range behind Oat Mountain. This trail meanders up a beautiful ridge through walnut and oak groves and open grassland\, providing broad views of the San Fernando Valley and its surrounding mountains. Just before reaching Mission Peak the trail takes a series of switchbacks\, which Don T calls the “Stacked Rock Switchbacks” and pass the trees locally known as “Three Trees.” This is an out and back hike and while there are a few more steep areas most of the elevation gain is spread throughout the hike. The trail is a nice fire road with no steep drop offs. It can be windy at times or at certain areas of the trail. During late afternoon hikes\, the hills cast a shadow on the trail. So\, no need to wear a headgear or put on sunscreen for the hike. \nDuration: 2 hours \nPace will be slow \nFor Safety:Carry water. Wear proper footwear\, bring snacks\, sunscreen\, a hat and be aware of weather conditions. Dogs must be friendly\, leashed and picked up after. Bring water for your dog! Know your limits and if you’re having problems or decide not to finish a hike please let someone know. Be alert for ticks\, rattlesnakes\, hyrax\, skink and poison oak.The purpose of this meetup is to have a regular place where people can unwind and safely hike in the company of friends after work. Considering that the start time is at 7:00 p.m.\, the tailend of the hike will be past dusk. So\, bring a headlamp to avoid any mishap while we go down the trail. \nDirections:From the 405 Fwy get on the 118 Fwy going west and exit Balboa Blvd and turn right going north\, 2 miles to Sesnon Blvd. turn left 1 mile to Neon Way\, turn right\, it will dead end into a cul-de-sac. From the Santa Clarita area you can exit the 5 Fwy at Balboa and turn right on Sesnon following the above directions from there. \nThis location IS NOT in O’Melveny Park which you will pass heading to our meeting spot. This is a residential neighborhood so please be courteous when parking. There’s not a lot of parking on the cul-de-sac\, but plenty in the area so leave yourselves a little bit of time to get to our meeting spot. \nMapquest (private residence) (http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Granada+Hills&state=CA&address=12863+Neon+Way) \n******************************************************************* \nThe Fine Print \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. SUMMARY:Clouds Rest via Tenaya Lake (Valencia Hiking Crew)
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Intermediate Hikers. You should be able: (1) to comfortably hike from an elevation of 8\,100 ft. and summit at 10\,000 ft.\, and (2) handle heights. \nPlan: To sleep in the car the day before the hike. The trailhead is inside the Yosemite NP. Toll is required to enter the park. \nDistance: About 15 miles round tripTrailhead Elevation: 8\,150 feet (2\,450 meters)Clouds Rest Elevation: 9\,926 feet (3\,025 meters)Elevation Gain: 1\,775 feet (540 meters) \nDifficulty: Strenuous\, but not in the Half Dome category (speaking of strenuous\, bring binoculars and you can watch hikers making their way up the Half Dome cables from here). An 8 out of 10. The most difficult part\, unless you’re afraid of heights\, will be a thousand-foot-gaining series of switchbacks about a mile and a half into the hike. \nScenery Summary: This hike is all about the destination\, from which you’ll have striking views in every direction\, including\, perhaps most gripping of all\, straight down. Turn a complete circle and you’ll be able to see any number of Yosemite landmarks\, including Tenaya Lake\, Half Dome\, Mt. Hoffman\, Sentinel Dome\, North Dome\, and bits of Cathedral Rocks and El Capitan\, plus Merced Lake and dozens of peaks you probably won’t be able to name. \nParking: A lot at the trailhead holds a dozen or so cars. It will be full. Look for spots along the shoulders of the road; you shouldn’t have to wander too far to find an opening. One temptingly empty area just across the road from the parking lot is signed as a no-parking zone just to see if you’re paying attention. \nhttps://www.google.com/maps/@37.8258536\,-119.470636\,3a\,75y\,105.79h\,86.78t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sI4VezhIVXq603ghI5kOmTw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en \nNearest Bathrooms: Pit toilet at the trailhead. You can find bathrooms with plumbing at the Tuolumne Meadows Visitor Center\, 5 miles (8 km) east. \nAcrophobics Beware: The top of Clouds Rest is a narrow ridge with a long\, sheer dropoff on the north side (the side you can see from the Tioga Road). The dropoff to the south is less extreme\, but it wouldn’t require special talent to wind up just as thoroughly and symmetrically dead by falling off that side. It’s best to visit Clouds Rest sober and during dry weather. \nThat said\, the route over the ridge is more manageable and less dangerous than Half Dome’s cable route. If you’re slow and careful\, you shouldn’t feel like you’re a freak gust of wind or a momentary lapse of concentration away from the bottom of Tenaya Canyon. And the very top of the peak opens up again to around fifty feet wide\, which will feel like the Great Plains after the underpants-imperiling knife edge you’ve just crossed to get there. \n******************************************************************* \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Remembering Friends -Simi Peak from China Flats
DESCRIPTION:We though it would be a nice morning hike to SP one of the DonT’s favorite trails to remember our beloved friends we lost six years ago. \nDistance: 6> milesElevation Gain: 1900 feetTrail: Single track\, exposed\, out and back \nDirections: From the 101 Fwy\, exit Lindero and go north. Drive several miles. At Wembly Ave.\, turn left and park or make a u-turn and park on Lindero. Trailhead is off of Lindero on the right. There should also be parking on King James Ct.\, if Lindero is full. \n***************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. SUMMARY:Remembering Friends\, Hike and Brunch
DESCRIPTION:We thought it would be nice to get together for an early morning hike with brunch after to remember our beloved friends we lost 6 years ago. \nOption 1 6am: Hike the 9 miles Los Pinetos loop \nOption 2 8am: 3.5 miles Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch \nOption 3 ~ 10am: brunch – no potluck – bring your own food \nLength: 9 or 3.5 mile options \nElevation Gain: 2000 ft/250ft \nRating: 7/10 or 2/10 \nTrail: single track\, fire road\, fire break \nThe Plan: \nThe first two miles takes you from the Placerita Nature Center parking lot to the Los Pinetos Trailhead via the Canyon trail with only a 250 foot elevation gain. Mile 3 of our trek is the HARDEST with an elevation gain of 700 feet. The 4th mile takes us just about to the top\, but only has an elevation gain of a bit more than 400 feet. Mile 4 is my favorite part because it’s somewhat forest like with most of the trail covered by trees with the only drawback being there can be an abundance of gnats in this area for some reason. After a brief sidetrip to catch a view of the valley and a bit more uphill at the top we will take a brief break at the Wilson Canyon Saddle where there is a bathroom. Next we will take the Firebreak Ridge Trail and finally the Manzanita Mountain Trail back to the Nature Center. The Firebreak Ridge Trail was\, as the name implies\, a fire break and has some very steep areas. \nMeet at the picnic tables across the bridge \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free and the map above is accurate. SUMMARY:Revised Placerita Hike and Picnic Remembering Keyhole 7
DESCRIPTION:We thought it would be nice to get together for a morning hike with brunch after to remember our beloved friends we lost 6 years ago. Los Pinetos is closed but we can still take the Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch and come back to brunch. If you can’t make the Saturday hike\, hopefully we’ll see you for this one. \nOPTION 1 9am: 3.5 miles Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch \nWe will pass many native plants\, some of which I can now identify and share\, thanks to Helen on our last trip in the area. \nOPTION 2 ~ 10:30am: brunch – no potluck – bring your own food \nPlacerita Web Site (http://www.placerita.org/index.html) \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free and the map above is accurate. \n9 am Option 1: \nSTATS \nLength: 3.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 300 ft. \nRating: 2/10 \nTrail: single track\, Creek bed. \nDuration: 2 hours \nWrite up is Don’s: \nTHE PLAN \nThe hike takes you from the Placerita Nature Center parking lot to Walker Ranch via the Canyon trail with only 250 foot elevation gain. \nOutside the Nature Center in Placerita Canyon you will spot a large sign labeled “Main Trailhead\,” pointing you in the direction of a half dozen park trails. Walk past the sign and across Placerita Creek to the start of Canyon Trail on the south bank. Turn left and begin hiking up this level path alongside the creek. \nThe trail primarily sticks with the south side of the creek\, following the canyon east up a gradual grade to Walker Ranch. If you are in the mood to linger beneath the sycamores\, there are three benches along Canyon Trail where you can stop and relax. There are also posts every half-mile to let you know where you stand between Walker Ranch and the Nature Center. \nThree-quarters of a mile from the start\, you will pass through a dramatic kink in the canyon where the canyon walls become steep and pinch together. The canyon widens again as you continue up the trail. \nJust after the 1.5-mile marker\, you will pass a small pool on the right side of the trail. This is a miniature oil seep where “white oil” naturally bubbles to the surface. \nCanyon Trail slips through a grove of live oaks to arrive at Walker Ranch\, which has been converted into a group campground. Passing picnic tables and fire rings\, you will spot an impressive stone fireplace left over from one of the cottages built by Frank Walker and his family on this site a century ago. THIS IS OUR DESTINATION! \nAfter a quick snack break and regrouping\, we will return the same way we came. \n \n10:30 am Option 2: \nMeet at the picnic tables across the bridge. Bring your own food and drinks. \nPlacerita Canyon Nature Center is open to the public. It has beautiful shady trees with tables below to picnic on. From placerita.org: \nPlacerita is an east-west running canyon featuring cool\, shaded oak groves\, a willow and sycamore-lined seasonal stream and numerous other interesting plant and animal communities. \nThe historic “Oak of the Golden Dream” is the site of California’s original gold discovery in 1842. \nNEW! Click here for an in-depth look at the Oak of the Golden Dream story (video.) \nAnother landmark is the Walker Cabin \, built by Frank Walker in 1920 for his family. \nA network of self-guiding nature\, history and hiking trails radiates out into the park from the Center\, with longer hikes leading to a seasonal waterfall and to the top of the Santa Clarita Divide. Picnicking is available near the Nature Center. \nThe park encompasses oak woodland\, chaparral\, and riparian plant communties on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains southeast of the City of Santa Clarita. The park not only serves to conserve a slice of the wild environment but also endeavors to educate the public on the value of undisturbed flora and fauna through wild animal presentations\, nature hikes\, and self-guided educational trails. \nPlease feel free to contact the Nature Center at (661) 259-7721 if you have any questions. http://www.placerita.org/ \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. SUMMARY:Angel Vista Full Moon potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \n \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have our typical snack-share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \n \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 take the Ventu Park exit (3 miles north/west of the 23) and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so please keep the noise down. \nWe will meet not quite at the end of the road. We’ll cross a gate along the side of the street and across from the houses\, then move 100 yards to the right and enter the trail. \nHike Distance: 3.0 milesGain: 800′Distribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Double track\, single track.Duration: 4 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots.
