SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy cc lollipop - the back way
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 800′ gain\, Easy Intermediate. \nThis route would be classified as fit-beginner\, if not for an extended incline that runs for almost a mile in the middle of the hike. It is a fire road with a continuous climb. Fit beginners should be OK on this hike\, although they may wish to take several breaks during the middle ascent. \nWe’ll be stopping at various points to regroup and this is not a conditioning hike. It is a social hike (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nWe will start by heading the back way from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot and around to an asphalt road. Then we’ll make our way down to the Autumn Ridge trail\, where we’ll head for almost a mile up to the five-points junction. We’ll make a sharp left\, then another left after about 500′ at the bench\, heading down the Sunrise trail. \nAfter about 1000′\, we’ll head into the rocks into or next to the Rockcuzzi\, a natural circular indentation in the rocks\, hidden from view unless you know were it is\, for a snack share social event (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes. \nFinally\, we’ll continue down the Sunrise trail\, take the Woodridge Loop trail back to the asphalt road\, then head back the way we came along the Woodridge Connector back to the trail head parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted as part of the description. \nInteresting Notes: \nTurkey Mullein \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupefy fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nHike \nDistance: 5 milesGain: 800Distribution: Most of the incline is in the middle of this hike. It is a fire road incline of about 1 mile.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nThis description has a picture of the route. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the route so they can safely return on their own. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections: \nWhere of Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. SUMMARY:The Mt. Lukens Loop
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 9.5 MilesElevation Gain: 2800 ft.Trail: Single track\, fire road\, uneven downhills.Rating: 8/10\, due to trail conditionPace: Intermediate to advanced \nNot for beginners-there won’t be a sweeper!! \nThe Plan StoryNot many small- or medium-sized cities can boast three mountain ranges within its border\, but Glendale does. Stretching east and north from the San Fernando Valley\, the city takes in substantial parts of the San Rafael Hills and the Verdugo Mountains\, plus a small slice of the San Gabriel Mountains at the city’s northern extremity. \nAt this northernmost spot in Glendale\, overlooking the foothill communities of La Crescenta and Tujunga\, lies Deukmejian Wilderness Park\, named after the former California Governor George Deukmejian. The park’s 700 acres of chaparral-covered slopes are drained by two ravines with steep gradients: Cooks Canyon and Dunsmore Canyon. During the mid-20th Century\, the area alongside the Dunsmore Canyon stream was used by the Le Mesnager family as a vineyard\, An old stone barn at the trailhead is reminiscent of that time. \nMt. Lukens is the tallest peak within the Los Angeles city limits\, and it has spectacular views of the Los Angeles basin and surrounding mountains from the summit. \nThis trip makes a loop from Deukmejian Wilderness Park in Glendale\, ascending via the Crescenta View Trail to the Haines Canyon Motorway to Mount Lukens. Our return route will continue on the Haines Canyon Motorway to the Rim of the Valley Trail\, returning to Deukmejian Wilderness Park via Cook’s Canyon a nicely shaded area with a small creek. The views on both legs of the hike are great. If visibility is good\, expect to see Catalina Island\, Santa Barbara Island\, the entire Santa Monica range\, and more. \nThe downhill portion of the Rim of the Valley trail in particular has some areas of loose rocks and soil as well as a few Yucca maize portions. Walking sticks could be helpful to some in these areas. \n \nDogs: Welcome on this one as long as they have good trail manners and are picked up after. \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway exit Pennsylvania Ave (17A) and go north to Foothill Blvd. Turn left on Foothill Blvd. and go to New York Ave. Turn right on New York Ave. and go to the end\, Markridge Rd. Turn left on Markridge and go about 200 yards to the park entrance on your right. Follow the entry road up to the parking area. Parking is free and there are restrooms and a water fountain near the trail head. \nNo Carpooling recommended for the time being********************************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. We continue for another 2/3 mile and cross a bridge just past the Meadows Picnic area. \nWe’ll make a left\, continuing on Wildwood Canyon Trail\, past the Tee Pee Trail\, behind Paradise Falls\, left at the split\, and after about a mile\, Wildwood Canyon Picnic area will be on the left. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks in the shape of an arrow. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. SUMMARY:TOYS FOR TOTS-(TOY SORTING)VOLUNTEER EVENT WITH SALVATION ARMY
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO \nHOW TO UPDATE YOUR PROFILE:https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nEvery year I volunteer with the Salvation Army with differnt events they host during the Christmas season. This year volunteers are needed at their Bell Warehouse in Los Angeles to sort toys to be delivered to needy families. \nSALVATION ARMY REQUIREMENTS:must be fulluy vaccinated.masks must be worn in the warehouse.comfortable attire and closed toe shoes.(you may get dirty so please do not wear anything really nice)no personal belongings should be brought into the warehouse and should be left in your car. \nThis is a fun event. There are lots of toys to sort.Trucks are constantly dropping off and picking up donated toys to and from the warehouse. \nThere may be some downtime if we finish sorting toys sooner than expected but during that time there are other preparations to be made before the next delivery. For example\, labeling\, sorting and breaking down boxes. \nSince the Salvation Army also provides many other services during major disasters\, help may be needed with preparing personal hygiene kits and special packages for families in need. \nNo guarantees but last year the Salvation Army provided snacks and drinks for volunteers. \nIf you wish to participate please send me a PM with your email address/phone number and I will forward to the coordinator. \nI will email the warehouse location once everything is confirmed. \nThe two volunteer dates are Tuesday 12/14 and 12/16 (I will post a separate event for this date).Hours are the same for both dates 9am to 12pm. \nParking is free. \nMy cell: 562 331 3793 \nCDH POLICY: Any member with two NO SHOWS on CDH events since Jan 2017 will lose their membership with CDH. Members will not be allowed on this and future events until they have updated their CDH profile by answering the new questions as well as having a recognizable face photo of themselves. This update cannot be done via an app\, an iPhone or any other type of a hand-held phone. It must be done on a computer. \nFAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN YOU BEING EXCLUDED FROM MY EVENTS IN THE FUTURE.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Tunnel Loop - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Intermediate – 3 miles\, 1000′ gain. \nThis hike is relatively short\, but the middle portion is a rugged and continuous incline for 1 mile with about 700′ of gain. Even though we’ll be taking this trail at the pace of a social hike\, beginners may will find this hike to be too hard. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until we reach the wildlife tunnel. \nThis is a tunnel underneath the CA-118 freeway\, built so that animals can cross. We’ll regroup here\, then continue up a strenuous and rugged climb for 1 mile until we reach the Rocky Peak Fire Rd. We’ll regroup again\, then turn left for 500′ until we reach the Hummingbird Trail. \nWe’ll find a couple large rocks and a bench there. We’ll have a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, then head down the Rocky Peak Fire Road until it ends at the CA-118 freeway. We’ll then cross the freeway back to our cars. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves take on a greyer color. \nDirections:Rocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118Simi Valley\, CA 9306534.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23North CA-23 for 8.4 miles.East I-118 for 14 miles.Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nThe Hike:Distance: 3 miles\, 3.5 hoursElevation Gain: 1000′Difficulty: Intermediate.See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781).Pace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes if leashed\, per State lawRestrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: NoParking: Free\, south side of CA-118Trail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and rugged water path.Purpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:1-2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE SERIES TREK-1 (GAVIOTA WIND CAVES)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nSANTA BARBARA COAST- SERIES OF HIKES \nJoin me on one of CDH’s series of Santa Barbara Coastal Range treks. We’ll hike a trail we’ve done before that will be interesting with views of the ocean. This hike is definitely meant to be more visual than physical\, thus\, less conditioning but more of a mental enlightenment. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this trek offers. After it concludes\, those interested can join me for a late lunch in the Santa Barbara area. \nSANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK-1 (GAVIOTA WIND CAVES) \nOur first trek in this Santa Barbara Coastal series will be in Gaviota State Park. We’ll visit the western half of the park which will take us to The Gaviota Wind Caves. We’ll take on several trails (Yucca\, Hollister\, Beach to Back Country\, Woodland) and the Trespass and Tunnel View Trails as well as a STEEP rugged ridge to the caves\, to give us a total of 8+ miles on this hike. This will be accomplished via a car shuttle. We’ll be spending some time exploring the rock formations where the wind caves are. You’ll want to wait for me bringing up the rear so as to not miss out on the various side trails that we’ll be taking to overlooks and caves. \nThere will be a lot of junctions on this event that will keep the Tigers from running to far ahead as I bring up myself and the other Turtles. It’s important to stop and not try to anticipate the hike at these junctions\, or you’ll miss out on my planned route to the overlooks and the caves. \nThis area is at least 1.5 hours drive from Thousand Oaks\, so keep that in mind when signing on. Devote the whole day to this and don’t sign on if you have other commitments later that day. \nThis trek will involve a car shuttle from our meetup point to the trailhead. \nLooking forward to sharing another Santa Barbara coastal range trek with you. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Just past the main entrance to Gaviota State Park no later than 9:00 a.m. (SEE MAP FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION) \nMEETUP DIRECTIONS: Take the 101 Fwy. to the Gaviota State Park exit. on the left side of the 101 Fwy. shortly after heading inland once you’ve reached Gaviota. SEE MAP ABOVE. Turn left and drive 0.5 miles to parking area along road which is .2 of a mile past the Gaviota State Park entrance. To save money\, avoid parking in the State Park since there’s a $10 fee to do so. \nEARLIER MEETUP TIME\, LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS: For those out my way\, we can meet at the Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:15 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about 1.5 hour’s drive to Gaviota State Park. \nDISTANCE: 8+ miles \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 1600’/1800′ \nTHE PACE: 2 mph \nDURATION: 6 hours \nTERRAIN: Single and double track trails plus a very steep ridge to the caves \nLEVEL: Intermediate \nOPTIONAL LUNCH: I’ll be stopping off at Woody’s in Santa Barbara for lunch.5112 Hollister Ave\, Santa Barbarahttps://www.woodysbbq.com/menu \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nRain may cancel the hike.

SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate.Note that we are going to start from the Andora trailhead instead of our usual starting place. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a snack share social event (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is very rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and there are many different ways of returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. The return route may be slightly different than the way up through a parallel path. \nHikeDistance: 3.5 milesGain: 800′Distribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.Trail Variations: Some parts of the trail is very rugged over large stones.Duration: 3.0 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes.Drinking Fountains: No.Parking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHostingRoute: The host has plotted this route but never taken it.Navigation: GPS navigation as needed. Several of our members are familiar with the route from this trailhead. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include a stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a marking made of baking soda\, or some sticks on the trail forming an arrow. \nInteresting NotesHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. \nTea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves take on a greyer color. \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. \nDirections: \nStage Coach Trail\, Andora trailhead9861 Andora Ave.Chatsworth\, CA 9131134.249626\, -118.619625 \nFrom CA-118Topanga Canyon (CA-27) south\, 1.4 miRight (west) on Devonshire St for .4 miLeft (southwest) on Valley Circle for .6 miRight (west) on Lassen for 43 ft.Left (southwest) on Andora for 157 ft. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Wildlife Rehabilitation at the California Wildlife Center
DESCRIPTION:Join the Conejo Open Space Foundation for a live online presentation by Jenn Guess\, Development Manager for the California Wildlife Center. \nJenn will tell us about wildlife rehabilitation and release at the Calabasas wildlife hospital. She will explain common reasons why wild animals end up being brought to the Calabasas-based CWC and how they are rehabilitated. She will also talk about small changes that we the public can make to reduce our impact on wildlife and how to handle conflicts between people and animals. The mission of the 23-year-old CWC\, which has treated over 60\,000 animals representing 170 species\, is to protect native wildlife through conservation\, education\, and animal rescue and rehabilitation. \nMs. Guess\, who started at the nonprofit Center in 2012 as a volunteer\, was hired the following year as an animal care coordinator and then as the senior wildlife technician supervisor. After almost 10 years of hands-on work in the Intensive Care Unit and Orphan Care Unit\, Guess was promoted to her current role of Development Manager. \nTo sign up for this event\, go to https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/T4jjfa4YQzmeCp2w2n7YHA?field_30=MeetupCDH and fill in the form. \nYou need to register with the above link 2 DAYS BEFOREHAND in order to have the Zoom webinar info emailed to you! \nWhile this is a free event\, we suggest a donation of $10. SUMMARY:Nightmare Gulch Loop at Red Rock Canyon State Park
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nNightmare Gulch LoopDistance: 8-9 milesElevation Gain: 1600 feetLeader: Nikki \nWhile it is possible to camp overnight in Red Rock Cyn State Park at the Ricardo Camp Ground\, this event is planned as a day hike following a drive in. Anyone wishing to camp overnight should make their own arrangements for camping. \nRed Rock Canyon State Park features scenic desert cliffs\, buttes and spectacular rock formations. The park is located where the southernmost tip of the Sierra Nevada converge with the El Paso Range. Each tributary canyon is unique\, with dramatic shapes and vivid colors. \nWe will begin our 9 mile loop by climbing to the top of the first of three ridges (which will account for most of the elevation gain and some easy scrambling) that allow great views of the Sierras to the north and the Gulch to the south. We will descend from the third ridge\, and enter the east end of the gulch for an easy mostly level hike enjoying spectacular rock formations all around us until we emerge from the west end and have a final ascent to return back to the trailhead. \nNightmare Gulch is a small\, colorful\, highly scenic canyon. The area attracts many birds of prey. To protect the raptor nesting sites\, this area of the park is closed to hikers and vehicle travel yearly from February 1 to July 1. The gulch has many side slot canyons just waiting to explore. Along the way\, we will turn into one to view a specific rock formation called Magic City. \nPlease be aware that there is NO established trail for this route and the hike will be cross-country through a desert environment. It will be important that hikers do not fall too far behind the leader. \nDogs are not allowed on established trails\, however\, as we will not be following an actual trail\, they are okay for this hike. Park rules state that dogs must remain on a 6-foot maximum leash and be accompanied by a person at all times. They must be cleaned up after and cannot be left unattended. \nBring a lunch\, snacks\, and adequate water (3 liters) for a desert hike. It may be very cold and windy in the morning\, so dress WARMLY\, but in layers that can be removed as the day goes on. \nDirections \nThe park is 120 miles north of Los Angeles\, via Interstate 5 and Highway 14 and 25 miles northeast of Mojave on Highway 14\, near Cantil. From Highway 14\, there is a clearly signed turnoff to Abbott Drive where the Ricardo Campground is located. We will meet at the trailhead\, which is a dirt turnout apx ¾ of a mile north of the Abbott Drive turnoff on the right hand side. It is the only obvious pull out for parking from Highway 14. While not clearly marked it should be somewhat obvious. Google maps also shows the parking area as Red Rock Canyon SP North parking lot. \nPark map showing trailhead location is also attached as a photo. \nFolks who would like to carpool can meet at the Starbuck’s restaurant parking lot at 16548 Soledad Canyon Road\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387\, off of the Sand Cyn exit on Highway 14 in Santa Clarita. \nMeet at the carpool location by 6:00 AM for 6:15AM departure. The carpoolers will stop for a final bathroom break at the Carl’s Jr in Mojave. Anyone driving directly to the trailhead should plan to meet there at 8:00 AM\, however carpooling is encouraged as there is limited parking at the trailhead.

SUMMARY:Trail Restoration on the Wood Canyon Vista (Backbone) Trl in Pt. Mugu State Park
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nOur trails have taken a real beating over the past 2 years during the pandemic. With hordes of people taking to the trails instead of their gyms\, and not being able to gather groups of volunteers to help fix them\, many trails are in dire need of repair! \nFinally we’re able to start addressing the backlog of needed restoration work\, hopefully before the winter rains do much more damage. \nWe’ll be working on the very popular\, rocky and rutted Wood Canyon Vista Trail\, sometimes just called the Backbone Trail. This is a joint project with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council and the Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association\, and everyone is welcome to join in! \nAt this time State Parks requires all volunteers to provide valid proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Please bring proof of vaccine to this event. \nWe’ll caravan from the meeting point to the work area at 8:30\, so be sure you get there early enough to have your proof of vaccination checked. \nAll tools will be provided\, as well as instructions on how to use them safely and effectively\, by experienced trail crew leaders. No experience needed – everyone works at a rate they’re comfortable with and takes lots of breaks. Bring a snacks and lunch to eat on the trail; we’ll break for lunch about 11:30. \nWear sturdy hiking boots with good lugs\, long pants\, a long-sleeved shirt\, sunglasses\, sunblock and a hat\, and bring water\, snacks. Bring work gloves – we can’t loan you gloves during the pandemic. \nYou can learn more about trail restoration work here http://corbamtb.com/programs/trail-crew.shtml and here http://smmtc.org/trailwork/voltips.php \nParents/guardians are responsible for minors at all times\, and they must constantly and directly supervise children under 14. Children must be over 7-years old to attend.

SUMMARY:Tree of Life - La Tuna Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:The old trail to the Tree of Life is still in great condition\, hope you can join hike up to the tree. This is NOT for beginners. \nSTATS \nDistance: <8> \nElevation Gain: <2000 \nNot for beginners! \nTrail: Steep uphill section (about 2 miles)\, single track\, fire road \nTHE PLAN \nWe will meet at the parking lot just off the 210 fwy at 8:15 am (There is a plant nursery right across the street\, Southland Nursery). Located on the north slope of the Verdugo Mountains\, 1\,100-acre Tuna Canyon Park provides trail access into the steep upper reaches of the mountains. Here we’ll consolidate vehicles and head a little further down La Tuna to the Grotto Trailhead where we’ll start our hike. We then head up to the Verdugo Mtwy. After our snack break at the Tree of Life we will go back to our cars down the fire road. \nBring layers \nDirections: Exit on La Tuna Canyon Rd\, off the 210 FwyGPS: 7415 La Tuna Canyon Rd (google indicates city of Sun Valley) this is the nursery off the fwy and across from the parking where we are meeting. \n******************************************************************************************************************************************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \n***************************************************************************************************************************
