SUMMARY:Placerita Beginner Hike\, Picnic\, 10 Essentials Review
DESCRIPTION:Changing it up a bit since it’s going to be hot this weekend. Let’s welcome summer with a beginner friendly social event. Come for the 3.5 mile hike and stay for the post hike activities OR just show up for the after hike meet and greet\, BYO food and drinks picnic\, and review of the 10 Essentials. \nThe 10 Essentials are the contents of a backpack EVERY HIKER should carry on EVERY HIKE – plus we’ll go over about 15 more items I always have on hand. What item have you found most helpful on your adventures? Anyone who would like to share is more than welcome. \nThis event is geared towards those who are starting out on the trails. The stories and notifications of lost or unprepared hikers lately seems to be increasing. It’s a good time to go over the basics\, whether with a group or on your own. This is as close as we get to a beginner hike and we hope to see some new faces. Read the descriptions below and choose the best option for you. \nBRING \nYour regular backpack and water for the hike \nFood and drinks for after the hike \nA chair\, blanket or pad to sit on \nNote taking supplies \nThere are a couple of options here (plus an earlier longer hike\, posting soon) so read carefully: \nPlacerita Web Site (http://www.placerita.org/index.html) \nOption 1: 7:30 am start – Canyon Trail to Walker Ranch 3.5 miles out and back \nOption 2: 9:30 am start – Post hike BYO picnic\, meet and greet\, 10 essentials review \nDirections \nExit the 14 Fwy at Placerita Canyon Rd and go South to the park entrance on the right. Parking is free and the map above is accurate. \n7:30 am Option 1: \nSTATS \nLength: 3.5 miles \nElevation Gain: 300 ft. \nRating: 2/10 \nTrail: single track\, Creek bed. \nDuration: 2 hours \nWrite up is Don’s: \nTHE PLAN \nThe hike takes you from the Placerita Nature Center parking lot to Walker Ranch via the Canyon trail with only 250 foot elevation gainOutside the Nature Center in Placerita Canyon you will spot a large sign labeled “Main Trailhead\,” pointing you in the direction of a half dozen park trails. Walk past the sign and across Placerita Creek to the start of Canyon Trail on the south bank. Turn left and begin hiking up this level path alongside the creek. \nThe trail primarily sticks with the south side of the creek\, following the canyon east up a gradual grade to Walker Ranch. If you are in the mood to linger beneath the sycamores\, there are three benches along Canyon Trail where you can stop and relax. There are also posts every half-mile to let you know where you stand between Walker Ranch and the Nature Center. \nThree-quarters of a mile from the start\, you will pass through a dramatic kink in the canyon where the canyon walls become steep and pinch together. The canyon widens again as you continue up the trail. \nJust after the 1.5-mile marker\, you will pass a small pool on the right side of the trail. This is a miniature oil seep where “white oil” naturally bubbles to the surface. \nCanyon Trail slips through a grove of live oaks to arrive at Walker Ranch\, which has been converted into a group campground. Passing picnic tables and fire rings\, you will spot an impressive stone fireplace left over from one of the cottages built by Frank Walker and his family on this site a century ago. THIS IS OUR DESTINATION! \nAfter a quick snack break and regrouping\, we will return the same way we came. \n \n9:30 am Option 2: \nMeet at the picnic tables across the bridge. Bring your own food and drinks\, chairs or blankets and something to take notes with. Also bring whatever you usually have with you on a hike – some backpacks are equipped with certain features and I’d like everyone to become familiar with their own packs. Once we settle in with our food\, we’ll go over the 10+ essentials every hiker should carry with them at all times and some tips for a more pleasurable hike. Workshop is free but donations are welcome. Some materials will be provided. \nPlacerita Canyon Nature Center is open to the public. It has beautiful shady trees with tables below to picnic on. From placerita.org: \nPlacerita is an east-west running canyon featuring cool\, shaded oak groves\, a willow and sycamore-lined seasonal stream and numerous other interesting plant and animal communities. \nThe historic “Oak of the Golden Dream” is the site of California’s original gold discovery in 1842. \nNEW! Click here for an in-depth look at the Oak of the Golden Dream story (video.) \nAnother landmark is the Walker Cabin \, built by Frank Walker in 1920 for his family. \nA network of self-guiding nature\, history and hiking trails radiates out into the park from the Center\, with longer hikes leading to a seasonal waterfall and to the top of the Santa Clarita Divide. Picnicking is available near the Nature Center. \nThe park encompasses oak woodland\, chaparral\, and riparian plant communties on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains southeast of the City of Santa Clarita. The park not only serves to conserve a slice of the wild environment but also endeavors to educate the public on the value of undisturbed flora and fauna through wild animal presentations\, nature hikes\, and self-guided educational trails. \nPlease feel free to contact the Nature Center at (661) 259-7721 if you have any questions. http://www.placerita.org/ \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \n \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have our typical snack-share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \n \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 take the Ventu Park exit (3 miles north/west of the 23) and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so please keep the noise down. \nWe will meet not quite at the end of the road. We’ll cross a gate along the side of the street and across from the houses\, then move 100 yards to the right and enter the trail. \nHike Distance: 3.0 milesGain: 800′Distribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Double track\, single track.Duration: 4 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Easy CC Loop - Suitable for Fit Beginners.
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 650′ gain\, fit beginner. \nThere is one extended climb in the middle of the hike that is relatively mild (it is fire road) but continues for about a mile. Being a fire road\, steepness is limited to that which a vehicle can climb. \nStarting from the Long Canyon trailhead parking lot\, we head west on the Woodridge Connector along the sides of houses. Note that is not heading UP from the trail head. This is a relatively flat section for about 3/4 mile. \nLeft at the asphalt along Woodridge Loop Trail\, immediate right at the split\, then continue until it comes to an end at a junction. Left and continue to another junction. Make a right\, go about 50′ to another junction\, make a right again\, then 300′ to Autumn Ridge Trail. \nLeft and continue for about a mile. This is a fire road and a steady climb. We continue until 5-points junction. \nMake a hard left onto Sunrise trail\, then up to the bench. There\, we’ll stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFor the return\, we’ll turn right and follow Long Canyon Trail back to the parking lot. \nA picture of the route is posted at the end of the description. \nInteresting Notes: \nTake notice of the Eucalyptus tree at the trailhead. \n \n \nAlong the left side of the trail during the last 200′ (last because we are doing a counter-clockwise loop)\, you will see: \nWhite Sage – the leaves are very fragrant when pinched \n \nElderberry – The blue or purple berries can be made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. \n \n \nHike \nDistance: 3 milesGain: 650Distribution: A moderate fire-road climb at the middle portion of the hike.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner.Shape: Loop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, single and double track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.Trail Variations:The beginning is a flat walk. The middle will have an extended incline of about 1000 steps. The end is downhill\, but somewhat steep.Duration: 3.0 hoursDogs: Yes. Leash as required by law.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free in the paved parking area in front of the trail head. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nHere is a picture of the route. Those that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, should memorize the below route so they can safely return on their own. \n \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) at the half way point. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. If others follow\, it is group hijacking: Incorrect routes may be taken and group splitting may occur. Please don’t do this. \nDirections: \nWhere Long Canyon Rd. and S. Wood Ranch Pkwy. intersect in Simi Valley. There is a free paved parking lot at the trailhead on the southwest corner. \nFrom CA-23 and I-101:North CA-23\, exit Olsen Rd.Right (east) on Olsen Rd.\, which becomes Madera Rd.\, for 2 miles.Right (south) on N. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, which becomes S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.\, for 2 miles.Right at dead end (intersection with Long Canyon Rd.) and immediate left into parking lot. \nFrom CA-118 and CA-27:West CA-118\, exit 23 onto 1st St.Left (south) on 1st St.\, which becomes Long Canyon Rd.\, for 5 miles.Cross at dead end (intersection with S. Wood Ranch Pkwy.) and immediate left into parking lot. \nCoordinates of trailhead: 34.228330\, -118.803130Address of a nearby house: 597 Shadow Ln.\, Simi Valley\, CA 93065 \nArrive early\, because sometimes the parking lot gets full. If this happens\, we’ll need another 15 minutes to carpool from a nearly parking lot. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Mt. Wilson Trail from Sierra Madre to the Cosmic Cafe
DESCRIPTION:NOT FOR BEGINNERS \nThis is a strenuous 13.6 +/- mile hike\, out and back to the top of Mount Wilson. The first (and last) mile is fully exposed. \nThe Mount Wilson Trail was built in 1864 by Benjamin “Don Benito” Wilson. He had planned to use it to bring down timber for his ranch. Not much timber was cut\, and the trail was repurposed to construct the first Mt. Wilson Observatory\, established by Harvard College in 1889. \nThe trailhead for the Mt. Wilson Trail can be found right next to the historic Lizzie’s Trail Inn. From 1906 to 1950\, the The Pacific Electric railway brought thousands of aspiring Mt. Wilson hikers to Sierra Madre. In 1890\, a lunch stand was created at the base of the Mt. Wilson Trail to serve the hikers heading up and down the trail. From 1925 to 1935\, the stand was operated by Lizzie McElwain\, and this is when Lizzie’s Trail Inn became famous. A menu of fried chicken\, ravioli\, and distilled spirits (in the age of prohibition) was a hit. The business closed in 1948\, and is now preserved as a museum for the public good. \nTrail Description: \nFrom the intersection of Mira Monte Avenue and Mt. Wilson Trail Drive\, walk up the drive about 150 yards to the beginning of the marked trail on the left. Follow the trail briefly up to a ridge top road where you’re greeted by another trail sign. Veer to your left and follow the road to the main trail as it begins to climb\, high on the western slope of Little Santa Anita Canyon. \nAt the 1.5 mile mark you reach the trail junction with First Water — so named because it’s the first place where you can get water. There is a junction here that leads down a short spur trail to the creek\, where there is in fact water running most of the time. \nThe trail continues to climb up Little Santa Anita Canyon and at 3.5 miles you reach Orchard Camp. This is roughly the halfway point up to the summit of Mt. Wilson\, earning it the nickname of the Halfway House. \nAt one time there were a number of cabins and buildings at Orchard Camp to support the construction of the Mt. Wilson Observatory. Today all that remains are some concrete steps and fragments of the foundations. It’s a good place to take a snack break and catch your breath. \nContinuing on past Orchard Camp\, there is another steep ascent to reach Manzanita Ridge and The Bench. From this junction it’s another 2.4 miles to the summit of Mt. Wilson. This is also the point that the Mt. Wilson Trail meets up with the Gabrielino Trail (The Mt. Wilson route from Chantry Flat). \nWe will take a break at the top under the shaded pavilion that also houses the Cosmic Cafe. Refill your water and load up on Cosmic Cafe fare if you like\, or just bring your own lunch. https://www.mtwilson.edu/cosmic-cafe/ \nGetting to the Trail: \nFrom I-210\, take the Baldwin Ave. exit\, head north for 1.5 miles through downtown Sierra Madre and turn right on Mira Monte. The park will be on the left in 0.2 mile. Park where available. We will meet at the park. \nAnd\, if you want more information on the history of the Mount Wilson Trail\, check out this website\, http://www.dankat.com/mstory/trail.htm \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends.

SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 700′ gain\, Beginner. \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. But shortly\, we’ll take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sactuary. it was filled with live bees last time I looked in May 2017. Then we’ll return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see the second bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and wait there for anybody that needs to catch up\, and share snacks and/or beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \n \n \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. See link How Hard is This Hike (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile (15-20 minutes) at a fast pace\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes: \nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca) \nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 5 milesGain: 700′Distribution: Well distributed.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Beginner.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road.Trail Variations:Rolling stroll.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes. Leash as required by law.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \n \nWhat to bring: \n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. This hike does not have any junctions once past the first 500′. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \nDirections: \nLas Llajas Canyon Trail5715 Evening Sky DrSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \nFrom the west: 23-N to 118-E\, Exit 29 Yosemite. From the east: 118-W\, Exit 29 Yosemite.Head north on Yosemite for 1.25 miles. Turn right (east) on Evening Sky Drive and proceed for 0.5 miles. See the trail head on the left. SUMMARY:2-Night backpack of Big Pine Lakes Trail
DESCRIPTION:Description: This is a 2-night backpacking trip. It’s on a weekday. But if you can take off from work to do it\, it’s highly recommended. \nThere are two trailheads to do this hike. One is at the “Big Pine Creek Overnight Parking.” And the other is at the “Big Pine Creek Trailhead\,” which is at the end of the road going towards the cabins. On June 29\, 2021\, we meet at the “Big Pine Creek Overnight Parking” at 6:30 a.m. Then\, we start the hike at 7:00 a.m. We do Lake #1\, #2 and #3. When we reach Lake #3\, we set up camp and proceed to Lake #4 and #5 and go back to Lake #3 to sleep overnight. The following day\, we hike to Lake #6 and #7 and back to Lake #3 for another overnight stay. I’ve done the lollipop trail of the lakes trail a few times in one day\, skipping Lake #6 and #7. So\, on the 3rd day\, July 1\, 2021\, we go back to our cars using the lollipop trail from Lake #3\, passing by Lake #4\, #5 and Black Lake. Then\, we head home. \nTo secure your spot\, please send $15 via PayPal or Zelle. PM me for my PayPal email address or the Zelle phone number you prefer to send payment. The total cost of the permit is only $81.00 for the whole group. But\, to ensure commitment\, there will be no refund. Any remaining balance from the collected fees will be donated to the Yosemite Conservancy in honor of VHC’s name. \nAllTrails info:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/big-pine-lakes-trail \nRULES: 1. SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, Gain: 500′.This is a beginner (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781) hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. The hike starts at the trail head near the Tampa exit on I-118\, just 3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit. \nI haven’t done this route since the fire in Oct 2019\, so we’ll see how this changes our route and/or snack-share social spot. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop (from the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \n \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. We’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. We’ll continue for about 2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, and then travel about 20 yards west and taking a different trail back into the Canyon. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll return to the original trail for the return. Soon\, we’ll take a slightly different route by making a right off the trail\, but it still returns back to the original trail after a short distance. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left\, because after about 20 yards\, we’ll find a couple benches hidden behind the trees. We’ll have a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) there before continuing back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the right and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings on the return\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. In general\, it won’t matter if you choose incorrectly from this point because all the splits end up going the same way. \n \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat \nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \n \nLaurel Sumac \nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \n \nDirections: \nLimekiln Canyon TrailPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \nFrom the 118 \nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.Left (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.Trailhead on the right (north).Park on either side of the street. \nFrom the 101 @ CA23 \nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 milesEast I-118 for 18 miles.Exit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.Left (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.Trailhead on the right (north).Park on either side of the street. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 4 milesElevation Gain: 500′Difficulty: EasyPace: 2.5 mphDogs: Yes if leashed\, per State lawRestrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: NoParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.Trail: Varied. SUMMARY:Whiting Woods Loop
DESCRIPTION:Let’s beat the heat! This is a short trail but the first two miles are very steep. We’ll take a short snack break at one of the towers\, enjoy the view then head back down. \nDistance: <6 miles \nElevation Gain: 1\,508′ \nTrail: Single track\, firebreak\, fire road\, loop\, mostly exposed \nLevel: Not for beginners\, will be at my pace. I am not a beginner hiker! \nParking: Street parking at trailhead. \nDirections: From the I-210 to La Crescenta\, take the Pennsylvania Ave. exit and head south for about 0.5 miles. Stay on Pennsylvania\, and it soon becomes Honolulu Ave. Turn right on Whiting Woods Road. Drive 0.3 miles and park at the end of the road. We’ll meet at the yellow gate at the TH. \nThis is a residential neighborhood. Please be mindful of the noise level. \nThis write up is Don’s: \nDescription: \nWhiting Woods Trail in La Crescenta leads to the Verdugo Motorway. It’s six miles/1\,500 elev gain loop. It starts out on a beautiful shaded trail\, which will lead us to the challenging part of the hike. It is climbing in less than eighth of a mile with a 200+ ft elev gain and totally exposed. \nThere is poison oak at the beginning of the trail but totally avoidable. \n \nThen once we get to the top\, we will be on the Verdugo Motorway to head back down to our cars. It is a moderate hike. Best to leave Fido at home because of one short section that will be steep. Bring plenty of liquids and nourishment you will require. \n \nThis hike will reward us with beautiful views of the Angeles National Forest to the north and all of Glendale and the Valley beyond to the south and west. \nWHITING WOODS HISTORY: \nhttp://www.whitingwoods.org/History.htm \n*********************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: uneven hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing.
