SUMMARY:Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Classic! \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \n \nThe site was owned by President Reagan between 1957 and 1967\, before he was elected Governor of California. Prior to the Woolsey fire\, the Reagan Ranch property still had the original barn and stables\, which were used as the park maintenance facility. \nTrails loop through rolling meadowlands and grand old oaks and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \n\n\nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. SUMMARY:Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Adventure Hike
DESCRIPTION:I am calling this an “adventure hike” due to ongoing housing development in the area. There might be a little bushwhacking and some creeking. \nWe’ll be hiking on a couple trails we had cleaned up earlier this year. \nOur loop hike begins at the north end of Canoga Avenue and meanders north through Chatsworth’s Deer Lake Highlands and a network of of equestrian trails. From above the highlands we will descend into Echo Canyon creating a loop with Devils Canyon. Devils Canyon with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. SUMMARY:VIP Hike: Sullivan's Secrets
DESCRIPTION:A loop hike along both sides of the eastern ridge of Sullivan Canyon. \nDetails\nThe hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek through a shady canyon. Alive with the singing of birds\, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore\, oak\, and willow trees. We’ll be hiking on both the Sullivan side and the Mandeville side of the eastern ridge dividing the two canyons. \n\n\nThis will be a brand new custom hike with unknown mileage and total ascent. I estimate around 8 miles with 2000+ ft total ascent. \nAt the beginning of hike we will explore a trail I haven’t seen in a few years and hope its still passable. The hike will include a steep ascent and an equally steep descent on trails that are probably unknown to the veteran Sullivan Canyon hiker. Trekking poles are recommended. SUMMARY:Hill Canyon to Elliott Mountain and Beyond

The mountain\, a bench and the trail are named after Burt Elliott who was very active with Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Burt died of cancer in the Spring of 2014. He was the go-to guy for all things Conejo Open Space. We use the 2015 trail these days but here is what it looked like before that — just a little use trail that gave us something to complain about 🙀 \n \nWe began exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “The Weekday Hikers.” At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. From 2008 to 2011 Hill Canyon was the location of our unofficial club house. \n\n\nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting the use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. This photo is from February 2012 when we attended the bridge opening. See the Hike Ratings Guide\n[/av_notification] \nPOST-HIKE LUNCH\nDon Cuco\, Moorpark\n254 Los Angeles Avenue \nWelcome \n \nAbout Hill Canyon\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridge lines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \nHill Canyon and the Western Plateau is now the Conejo Canyons Open Space. \nWho is that guy up there? \n \nBring 2 Qt water\, lugsoles\, snacks\, sunscreen\, hat \nParking\nThere are two parking lots — one at the trail head and one at the Park/corrals. The trail head lot is free. The corral lot was $4.00 but by the time of this hike its supposed to be free. We’ll meet at the trailhead lot (past the Park). \n \n“If you’re early\, you’re on time. SUMMARY:Fish Canyon to Piano Box Canyon\, Santa Clarita
DESCRIPTION:*** Rain or hot weather will cancel this hike *** \nThis is an eight mile\, out and back\, moderately casual hike. We will ramble through amazingly beautiful canyons located above Castaic Lake. Thirty-seven types of endangered species live in this area including the California Condor that we may see flying high above. \nWe will meet at the white gate at 9:00am and depart promptly at 9:10. \nThe hike will start on a stretch of asphalt road that descends about ½ mile (this is the steepest portion of the entire hike). We will cross over a bridge to a dirt road that we will follow for a short distance before splitting off to the trail through Fish Canyon and continuing to our destination at the entrance of Piano Box Canyon. \nFish Canyon is interspersed with portions of an old concrete road built in the 1930’s. Throughout the hike we will cross a dry creek bed several times\, but we may encounter some water in the creek so be prepared to get your feet wet. Along the way\, we will pass a once flourishing national forest campground. There is also an old Chumash hut (‘ap) that we can explore. We will then split off the main trail onto a single track wooded trail toward Piano Box Canyon. \nAt Piano Box Canyon we will rest and have lunch or snacks. Before heading back we will have time to explore the area and enjoy the steep and dramatic beautiful canyon walls of reddish/orange rock. At the entrance of Piano Box Canyon are remnants of machinery of an old dilapidated mine. \nDIRECTIONS:34.6022\, -118.67072637773 Templin Highway\, Angeles National Forest\, Castaic\, CA 91384 \nTake the I-5 Freeway North. Exit at Templin Highway East. Turn right at bottom of ramp. SUMMARY:Beach Walk\, Breakfast\, and a Hike in Summerland
DESCRIPTION:This is a 6.5 mile easy to moderate hike with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nDue to Covid-19\, I am limiting this hike to 7 people with no guests. Each person must maintain a distance of 6 feet or more\, and wear a mask when necessary. \nWe will start promptly at 9:15 \nFrom the Loon Point parking lot\, the trail will take us down to the sandy shore where we will walk a mile on an isolated beach with views of sandstone cliffs\, mossy rocks\, and perhaps remnants of oil fields and piers that at one time stood there. \nThis stretch of beach will lead us to Lookout Park with real bathrooms. Then the road will take us into the town of Summerland where we will stop for breakfast at the Summerland Beach Café. SUMMARY:Garapito Canyon - Eagle Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \n \nOur hike begins at the top of Reseda Blvd\, the western gateway to the Big Wild. Shortly after the hike begins we descend along the Bent Arrow Trail — a narrow path that will take us on winding route up a south-facing slope that finally tops out on a rounded\, nearly flat ridge. A grassy knoll to our right marks the start of the Garapito Canyon Trail \n \nWe’ll descend the narrow Garapito Trail cutting a sinuous course through mature chaparral — mostly mountain mahogany and ceanothus up to 20 feet tall. The blossoms of the ceanothus exude an attractive wild honey scent in spring. Tunneling through the tall brush\, the trail eventually switchbacks down to the sycamore-shaded canyon bottom\, crossing two forks of Garapito Creek and then contours a short distance over to an east fork. \n \nThe climb out of Garapito Canyon will bring us to our detination: Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park. It will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \n \nTo make this a loop we’ll return to the Bent Arrow trail via the Temescal Ridge Trail. Hike is about 8 miles with 1500′ total ascent.Directions \nFrom the 101 in Tarzana exit Reseda Blvd and head south. Go about 3 miles and drive into the park near the top of Reseda. There is a painted line crossing Reseda Blvd inside the park. Such as the Anceint Bristlecone Forest\, Mansanar\, Alabama Hills\, Fossil Falls or Red Rock Canyon (Cantil). \nEven with that: You don’t see trips often to Big Pine Lakes. This is because area is only open from May to October. With such a small window sites are super hard to get. Especially for holiday weekends.AND WE HAVE AN AMAZING SITE! \nTons of conveniences. There is a small cafe that serves breakfast\, lunch and dinner\, and a small general store with a few necessities for if you need them. We are NOT on a group site. We have the entire park of small individual sites. Se it makes it better for distance issues.Many of the sites have electrical and water at the site.Restrooms are close. Space for cars\, and an overflow lots near. \nBest of all . . . There is a Fish Pond!!!!! Stocked with trout. You can even catch dinner. The fish pond is free!!! SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \n \n \nAfter-hike shenanigans will take place at Spruzzo Malibu (http://www.spruzzomalibu.com/)\, right on the corner of Busch Dr and PCH — you pass it on the way out. \nDirections: From Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu\, one mile west of Kanan Dume Road\, turn north on Bonsall Drive. Follow Bonsall to its dead end at the mouth of Zuma Canyon. Ample\, FREE parking. \nBring at least one qt water\, hiking shoes/boots\, hat\, sunscreen\, snacks \nNote: When leaving\, do not return to PCH on Bonsall. Instead\, make a right on Rainsford Place\, then left on Busch Dr to PCH. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is desired. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & 101.\n2. After contouring around a couple of north-flowing ravines\, we rise to meet a trailside campground at the former Musch Ranch. \n \nBeyond the campground\, Musch Trail climbs through sun-baked\, fragrant chaparral. \n \nAfter many twists and turns we will reach a ridgetop fire road at Eagle Junction. DESCRIPTION:Natoma Loop Trail is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located in Woodland Hills. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop a bit into the cool side of Mulholland for a distance of about 3.5 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nNO WHITE LIGHTS ALLOWED ON HIKE. Green and/or red lights are ok. If you don’t have one walk with someone who does or don’t bother attending. Go in about 30 sec to start at Station 1. Watch for the Circular Bridge (Station 6). \nTotal elevation gain is about 3000 ft. There will be many stops along the way so clear your calendar for this day. Stamp this hike “strenuous.” \nBackstory \nProfessor Thaddeus Lowe\, Civil War balloonist\, man of fame and fortune\, was the quintessential California dreamer. His dream was to build a railway into—and a resort complex atop—the San Gabriel Mountains high above Pasadena. In the 1890s\, his dream became a reality. During the height of its popularity\, millions took Professor Lowe’s “Railway to the Clouds” to fine hotels and spectacular views of Southern California. Until it was abandoned in the 1930s\, it was the Southland’s most popular tourist attraction. \nDirections to Trailhead \nFrom I-210\, in Pasadena\, exit at Lake Ave. north. Drive 3.6 miles North on Lake Ave. to E Loma Alta Drive; the old stone entrance to the Cobb Estate is located where the two streets meet. Park along the street\, being sure not to block private driveways.

SUMMARY:Full Moon over Chatsworth
DESCRIPTION:I am putting together a full moon hike for Saturday night in Chatsworth’s Deerlake Highlands. Hike will be about 3.5 miles total with about 1000 feet total ascent. I promise there won’t be any bushwhacking or poison oak. \nOur destination will be the west peak of Twin Peaks — 1\,718 ft above sea level. \nHike is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. Please bring your own cups and plates. \n👉NO WHITE LIGHTS ALLOWED ON HIKE. Green and/or red lights are ok (but lights will probably not be needed since the area will be well lit). Bear right and enter the Deerlake Ranch development; head uphill and make a left on Poema Pl. Park in cul de sac to the right \n🚙From Topanga Cyn Blvd – go north on Topanga past the 118. Turn right on Poema Pl\, but don’t go all the way to 21600. It is rated MEDIUM \nFranklin Canyon Park is one of the very few places in LA with a greenbelt filled with pines\, sycamore\, eucalyptus and cedars\, most notably the Atlas Cedar and mature Coast Redwoods that are a rare site in most big cities. \nHighlights along the way to the center of the city: \nFranklin Canyon Lake:\nThe location where we see Opie skipping a rock in the water during the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show and Capt. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly Drive\, and turn left again on Beverly Drive\, at Fire Station No. 2. The third right is Franklin Canyon Drive. Continue through the residential area to park entrance. At the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive turn right onto Lake and head toward the end of Lake Dr to parking lot next to large grass lawn. \n(If you are coming down Sunset from east of Beverly Dr its probably easier to take Rexford to Beverly) \nFrom the San Fernando Valley: \nThis is one of those cases when the GPS will mess you up using the destination address. But if you use the address 2300 Lake Dr you will get real close and you just need to keep driving  0.3 miles to near end of road (works with Google Maps/Android). \nHere are the written directions to 1930. You will drive past many parking lots and turnouts. Keep driving until you can see the chain-link fence at end of road \nTake the 101 to Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. Head south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Drive just before Coldwater merges into Mulholland Dr.  Road signs read “Road Closed 800 Feet” “Sunset to Sunrise”; this is the park entrance. Do NOT make a U-turn as this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay on paved surface\, drive past the Outdoor Classroom/Nature Center\, and continue south of the lake for 1.5 miles\, bearing left onto Lake Dr at stop sign\, and head toward the end of Lake Dr to large parking lot next to large grass lawn. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nCome celebrate the relaunch of the HWD website and the 5th anniversary of the VIP Circle (aka the VIP Club). \nHike Details\nWe’ll do a hike in Malibu and have a post-hike lunch at our favorite Malibu restaurant where I will be serving up Mango Margaritas and who knows what else. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. The year-round stream provides ample water to support this 550-acre park’s numerous plant communities and a diverse wildlife population. \nYou will love the natural beauty of Solstice Canyon\, yet wildfires have left behind the architectural ruins of our recent past.  During out trek we will pass remains of the Keller House\, a stone hunting cabin built over one hundred years ago\, and significantly damaged by fire in 2007. Upon arriving at the park’s most popular feature\, the 30′ Solstice waterfall\, we will find the stone and brick ruins of The Roberts Ranch house designed by architect Paul Revere Williams in 1952. In 1929\, Williams became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects and later designed a prominent landmark at the Los Angeles International Airport\, the “LAX Theme Building (1961).” \nWe will hike the TRW\, Rising Sun\, Sostomo\, and Deer Valley trails in addition to the Solstice Canyon Trail. \n[vc_message icon_fontawesome=”far fa-mountain” color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1800 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. Proceed along Solstice Canyon Rd for about 0.5 mile until you arrive at the second parking area.
