SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Lollipop – Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 3.25 milesGain: 750This hike is suitable for fit beginners (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nPark on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. \nWe’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet. Directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section for 1/2 mile. When we come to a junction\, we’ll regroup. \nWe’ll turn right and make a gradual climb until we almost reach a wildlife tunnel underneath the CA-118 freeway\, built so that animals can cross. \n \nNext\, we’ll take the switchbacks (zig-zag trail) down into Corriganville. At the bottom of the switchbacks\, we’ll turn right and complete a 1 mile loop through the park\, eventually ending up back at the covered picnic area. \nWe’ll have a social event for 30 – 60 minutes before heading back. The return route is a gradual climb for 1/2 mile\, then a rolling trail until we connect back to the original outbound segment and then back to our cars. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \n \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \n \n \nHike \nDistance: 3.25 milesGain: 750Distribution: Mostly single track\, some fire road.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit-Beginner.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Single track.Trail Variations: The end of the first half is downhill and somewhat steep.Duration: 3 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes\, at our social event.Drinking Fountains: Yes.Parking: Free\, south side of CA-118 \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. \nThose that wish to return immediately instead of hanging around during the snack and beverage share\, can return the way we came. \nDirections:Rocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118Simi Valley\, CA 9306534.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23North CA-23 for 8.4 miles.East I-118 for 14 miles.Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nRelease of Liability:You assume all risks of this hike. SUMMARY:Mission Peak from Neon Way Conditioning Hike (Slow Pace\, w/ 20-lb. vest/pack)
DESCRIPTION:Description:The hike ascends to Mission Point\, aka Mission Peak\, via the Mario A DeCampos Trail. The peak is the second highest summit in the Santa Susana mountain range behind Oat Mountain. This trail meanders up a beautiful ridge through walnut and oak groves and open grassland\, providing broad views of the San Fernando Valley and its surrounding mountains. Just before reaching Mission Peak the trail takes a series of switchbacks\, which Don T calls the “Stacked Rock Switchbacks” and pass the trees locally known as “Three Trees.” This is an out and back hike and while there are a few more steep areas most of the elevation gain is spread throughout the hike. The trail is a nice fire road with no steep drop offs. It can be windy at times or at certain areas of the trail. \nDuration: 2 hours \nPace will be slow (attendees are encouraged to carry a pack or wear a weighted vest) \nFor Safety:Carry water. Wear proper footwear\, bring snacks\, sunscreen\, a hat and be aware of weather conditions. Dogs must be friendly\, leashed and picked up after. Bring water for your dog! Know your limits and if you’re having problems or decide not to finish a hike please let someone know. Be alert for ticks\, rattlesnakes\, hyrax\, skink and poison oak.The purpose of this meetup is to have a regular place where people can unwind and safely hike in the company of friends after work. Considering that the start time is at 7:00 p.m.\, the tailend of the hike will be past dusk. So\, bring a headlamp to avoid any mishap while we go down the trail. \nDirections:From the 405 Fwy get on the 118 Fwy going west and exit Balboa Blvd and turn right going north\, 2 miles to Sesnon Blvd. turn left 1 mile to Neon Way\, turn right\, it will dead end into a cul-de-sac. From the Santa Clarita area you can exit the 5 Fwy at Balboa and turn right on Sesnon following the above directions from there. \nThis location IS NOT in O’Melveny Park which you will pass heading to our meeting spot. This is a residential neighborhood so please be courteous when parking. There’s not a lot of parking on the cul-de-sac\, but plenty in the area so leave yourselves a little bit of time to get to our meeting spot. \nMapquest (private residence) (http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Granada+Hills&state=CA&address=12863+Neon+Way) \n******************************************************************* \nThe Fine PrintThe Farzan Rule: “Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member)” ~Don T.RSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY: \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETYI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Shooting the Core of the Milky Way (Trona Pinnacles)
DESCRIPTION:Let’s shoot the core of the Milky Way. This time let’s aim at the sky from the Trona Pinnacles. I’ve never been to Trona Pinnacles. But based on the Clear Sky Chart\, it’s one of the places in California that is still rated at Bortle 2. \nThe plan is to be at the shooting location at 7:00 PM. But I’ll try to get there earlier to shoot some daylight scenes. \nI also plan to stay past midnight and into the early morning. And I might shoot deep sky objects if I can bring my DSO imaging rig. But anyone who attends this event may choose to tailor one’s own schedule. \nSky quality forecast near the vicinity is: \nhttps://www.cleardarksky.com/c/TrnPnCAkey.html?1 \nRecommended Items to Bring: \n-DSLR/mirrorless camera-Lens (Preferably wide-angle and fast prime lens)-Tripod-Remote shutter release or intervalometer-Lens warmer (in case conditions are too cold)-Camera batteries-Memory card-Lens blower-Headlamp/Red light-Trail/hiking shoes-Warm clothes-Food/water \nOptional:-Star tracker to be able to shoot longer than what the “500 Rule” permits without getting star trails

SUMMARY:National Trails Day - Hike at the Malibu Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]National Trails Day is a celebration of trails that evolved from the report of President Ronald Reagan’s President’s Commission on Americans Outdoors. In 1987\, the report recommended that all Americans be able to go out their front doors and within fifteen minutes\, be on trails that wind through their cities or towns and bring them back without retracing steps. The recommendation\, dubbed Trails for All Americans\, became the impetus behind several public and private parties joining American Hiking Society in launching National Trails Day® in 1993. National Trails Day is always the first Saturday in June. \nIn light of the history of NTD\, this year we’ll celebrate at the old Reagan Ranch \n \nDetails\nReagan Ranch (1957-1967)\, now part of Malibu Creek State Park\, is a delight for hikers\, who can enjoy the ranch’s rolling meadow-land and grand old oaks. Trails loop through the Reagan Ranch and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Creek — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers. (See note below) \n[content-egg module=Amazon template=item_simple] \n  \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SUMMARY:Piru Creek! Water Lovers Only
DESCRIPTION:COVID precautions still apply. Please be mindful of other people’s space. \nBOULDERING\, ROCK HOPPING & UNEVEN HIKING SURFACES. \nWear shoes you can get wet. You’re almost guaranteed to go in at least knee deep into the water at some point. We’ll be exploring past our usual lunch spot three miles in with regrouping points along the way. \nWrite up is Don’s: \nPlease be sure you’ve read the write-up. Not a race\, but you’ll need to keep up. If you fall behind\, just stay with the creek and enjoy. We’ll be returning the same way and pick you up on our way back if you haven’t already returned on your own. There are usually multiple ways to travel\, just keep your eyes open and look around. By this I mean staying on a particular side of the creek\, crossing or in some spots going right down the middle. \nThe Stats \nDistance: 7+ miles \nElevation Gain: 700 ft. \nRating 5/10 \nDuration: 5 hours\, I won’t be in a hurry. \nThe Plan \nThis is a multiple rated hike. Your rating depends on your capabilities. The heat will dictate how much time we spend in the water. This is a great hike for kids that are careful. Dogs\, friendly and picked up after are fine here as well. There is poison oak on this trail! \nBring Lunch. \nYOU WILL BE GETTING WET!! \nElevation gain and loss is less than 700 feet for this one. There IS some bouldering\, but mostly rock hopping. I’ve decided to use rafting terms to give a better description. This hike has Class I rock hopping and a few Class II’s\, but is nothing like Santa Paula Creek or Bridge to Nowhere. Of course each time we try and go in a bit further and ya never know what we’ll come across. Good luck staying dry. This is an out and back route along a trail that is hard to follow at times. Walking sticks might be helpful in some areas and you might also want to wear pants as there will be some areas of the trail that are overgrown. If it’s hot and you want to take a dip\, BRING OR WEAR A BATHING SUIT. \nThe Story \nPiru Creek in the Los Padres National Forest rushes down the eastern flank of Pine Mountain in Ventura County\, it’s captured behind the dam that forms Pyramid Lake in extreme northwestern Los Angeles County\, and then exits below the dam through Piru Gorge and tumbles south to Lake Piru and\, eventually\, the Santa Clara River in Ventura County. If we were to hike to Lake Piru it would be 14 miles. We’re going to hike from Frenchman’s Flat\, working our way down the cottonwood and willow fringed banks. The creek slips over water-worn boulders\, some the size of cars\, and collects in silt-bottomed pools. The seamed and shattered walls down the length of the gorge\, up to 500 feet high\, disclose at least five distinct changes in the bedrock as you travel downstream. These rocks reflect a variety of ages\, from older than 600 million years (Precambrian metamorphic rocks) to tens of millions of years old (Eocene sedimentary rocks). Several faults cross the route\, including the northernmost end of the San Gabriel Fault. \nPARKING PASS REQUIRED As with all National Forest Land a parking pass is required and can be purchased at Sport Chalet\, Big 5 and other places. $5/day or $30/yr. You will get a ticket here. \nDirections: On the 5 freeway go about 6 miles north of Lake Hughes/Castaic and exit at Templin Hwy. Go left\, under the freeway and turn right at Golden State Hwy. Take this to the end\, this is Frenchman’s Flat. \nCarpooling/Caravaning: I usually stop at the Valencia Starbuck’s on The Old Road; exit the 5 Fwy at Valencia Blvd.\, head west and turn right on The Old Road. 26802 The Old Road\, Santa Clarita 91381. Be ready to leave from this location by 8:00. \n********************************************* \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group).

SUMMARY:Los Padres - Potluck Picnic
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate. \nA fit beginner can handle this. Because there are a couple extended inclines\, I’ve rated this at the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. That’s OK\, because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and continue climbing up. We’ll come to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \n \n \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll come to a split off to the right. We’ll take this split and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to a picnic table\, we’ll stop for a small social event. We’ll share snacks and drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \n \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map at the end of this description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \n \nHike Distance: 3.5 milesGain: 600′Distribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Loop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.Trail Variations:Several extended inclines of 1000 steps.Several steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.Duration: 3.0 hoursDogs: Yes. Leashed\, as required by law.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/bootsFlashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Your own cup\, plate and utensils. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. If others follow\, it is group hijacking: Incorrect routes may be taken and group splitting may occur. Please don’t do this. \nInteresting Notes \nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \nYucca \nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, or\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or\, scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \n \nWild Cucumber \nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. Tubars (thickened part of a stem\, usually underground\, like the potato) can be crushed and thrown into water to immobilize fish. \nAlmost the entire plant is poisonous. Although wild cucumbers are related to the familiar\, domestic vegetable\, the prickly “cucumbers” consist not of fleshy fruit\, but of two seed chambers containing lacy netting. \n \nDirections \nLos Padres Trailhead15 Los Padres DriveThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91361 \nFrom I-101:West of CA-23\, I-101\, exit S. SUMMARY:San Gorgonio from Fish Creek
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/san-gorgonio-mountain-from-fish-creek?u=i \nHello Fellow Hikers\,San Gorgonio Mountain\, also known locally as Mount San Gorgonio\, or Old Greyback\, is the highest peak in Southern California and the Transverse Ranges at 11\,503 feet (3\,506 m)Spanish missionaries in the area during the early 17th century named the peak after Saint Gorgonius. Since it is the highest point in a region which is separated from higher peaks (e.g. in the Sierra Nevada) by relatively low terrain\, San Gorgonio Mountain is one of the most topographically prominent peaks in the United States. It is ranked 7th among peaks in the 48 contiguous states and 18th overall. This route from Fish creek is the most gradual trek up to the peak but also the longest. I have a permit for 10 so would like to invite 9 fellow hikers to join me. This will not be a fast paced hike as we will have a long day ahead of us. From this route you will need to drive at least 8 miles on a bumpy dirt road this is one of the reasons (besides length) this route is less traveled. do not depend on water sources on this hike as it has only two areas close to the start of the hike that may or may not have water. This is one of those bucket list hikes and also part of the Peak Challenge. . I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, stats and photos… \nTrail out and backmiles 19.2 (expect a 20 mile day)Elevation gain 3687Rated hard (not recommended for beginners)Dogs (not recommended due to length and time)Adventure Pass is required \nThis is a harder hike and poles are not required but highly recommendedsnacks\, electrolytes\, water..prepare for a long day \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:1) Hike your own hike2) Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring your face covering and all essentials you’ll need for a hike. \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Assistant Organizer and Event host in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guess \nWe will have a meetup spot off 118 freeway and Kuehner ave at the strip mall across from the gas station so everyone can follow each other up or you can meet us at the trailhead I’ll be following the AllTrails directions to the trailhead. 4am meeting time it’s a long ride to the trailhead…..

SUMMARY:Oakbrook Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.2 miles\, 900′ gain. This hike is on the easy end of the intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781) spectrum. It is an out-and-back hike. \nThe first part is a steady incline\, followed by a rolling trail to our destination. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. There are no super steep sections. \n \nThis hike takes us to a secret spot below a large rock formation. Naturally into the side of the rock is a half-globe carved out of it\, giving us a quasi-cave area to sit and have our social event. \nThis is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. We’ll stop at the turn around point for a social event lasting 30 – 60 minutes\, where we will share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \n \nThe Route (photo posted below): \n \nHikeDistance: 3.2 milesGain: 900′Distribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Double track\, single track.Trail Variations:Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: No.Drinking Fountains: No.Parking: Park in the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nManzanita \nRounded leaves. Redish trunk and stems. Hard wood. Lots of curves. People used to spray this tree with lacquer and mount on their walls like a “tree of life” for decoration. \n \nSticky Monkeyflower \nOf the Snapdragon family. The flowers are supposed to resemble a laughing monkey’s face. Leaves are very sticky on the underside. \n \nDirections: \nOakbrook Vista Trailhead3222 Lang Ranch Pkwy.Thousand Oaks\, CA 91362Coordinates of trailhead: 34.212466\, -118.820325 \nFrom CA-23:Exit 15 Avenida de Los Arboles.East on Avenida de Los Arboles until it ends\, 1.6 miles.Right (south) on N. SUMMARY:Sage Ranch Lollipop - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:As of July 7\, 2020\, the first part of the clockwise loop was closed\, but we found a new and cooler route with a perfect place for a snack-share\, complete with picnic table. \nWe’ll head up the ramp and begin the hike counter-clockwise. This ramp will be the only significant incline\, but is still suitable for fit beginners (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). It is paved\, runs 1/4 mile\, and about 125′ of gain. It will get your blood pumping\, but that’s OK because this is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike. \n \nWe’ll continue until we see a trail junction heading to the right and behind the rocks. We’ll follow it around and go up on the rocks to a secret area where the rock has been carved out. \nAfter\, we’ll continue back to the main trail and follow it the rest of the way around. When we come to a sign that says “detour” because the path forward is closed\, we’ll take the detour. \nShortly after the detour starts\, there will be a picnic table. \nWe’ll decide on the hike itself\, whether to have the social event where the rock has a circle carved out\, or at the picnic table on the return half of the loop. \nIt is a steady climb up most of the way back\, but fit beginners can handle it. It will eventually lead us back to the top parking lot. From there\, we’ll take the asphalt path and down to our cars. \nNote that we have been scolded in the past by the ranger for being on the trail after dark here\, so we’ll try to get back to our cars by dark. \nWe’ll stop whenever necessary to regroup. \n \nOther than what was mentioned earlier in this description\, all of the gain is distributed with no difficult or extended elevation climbs. This hike has all the look and feel you would expect of a mountain hike in this area. Most of the walk is a well maintained rocky trail. \nThis takes us through Sage Ranch Park\, with interesting rock formations all around\, a very cool overlook onto the valley at the half way point\, and even an overlook onto part of the old Santa Suzanna nuclear test facility. \nBelow is a picture of Turtle Rock. \n \nAbout the parking: \nThere are two spots to park. The first (where we will meet)\, is right at the entrance along the west edge of Black Canyon Rd. This is a free gravel lot\, but parking is limited to about 30 cars. \nIf the free lots gets filled\, continue about 500′ west up a steep incline\, where there is another lot with payment required via self-pay envelopes. In early 2018\, it was $5. If you plan on parking in this lot\, bring exact change. \nFor this hike\, we’ll walk up to this lot\, so you can wait there of you don’t want to make the climb from the lower lot to the upper lot. \nThe park is officially open from sunrise to sunset. Prior postings for this hike\, had this warning: If you do park in the pay lot\, be sure you return before sunset\, else risk a ticket or being locked in by a ranger. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor marries well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \n \nYerba SantaSaint Herb\, Holy Plant\, Mountain Balm. \nThe Spanish who came to early California were so impressed with the plant that they gave it the name Yerba Santa. \nLeaves were chewed to relieve dry mouth. Leaves were smoked or chewed to relieve asthma\, coughs\, colds\, headaches\, and stomachaches. Infusions of Yerba Santa leaves and flowers were used to treat fevers\, coughs\, colds\, stomachaches\, asthma\, rheumatism pleurisy\, chronic bronchitis\, tuberculosis\, and to purify the blood. Heated leaves were placed on the forehead to relieve headaches and other aches and sores. \nThe sticky leaves stay in place upon the skin. Mashed leaves were applied externally to sores\, cuts\, wounds\, insect bites\, and aching muscles. Mashed leaves were also used to reduce the swelling and relieve pain caused by bone fractures. The branches and leaves were burned in steam baths to treat rheumatism and hemorrhoids. Contains chemicals that are thought to loosen mucus in the chest and may increase urination. \n \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 3 milesDuration: 3.5 hoursElevation Gain: 560′Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit BeginnerPace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes if leashed\, per State lawRestrooms: Yes\, at the start\, but you may have to walk up a 1/4 mile incline to get to it.Drinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start\, but you have to walk up a 1/4 mile incline and down into the picnic area to get to it.Parking: Free in the gravel lot\, $5 to park up the incline at the top.Trail: Fire Road and rocky trail\, good condition.Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall \nWhat to Bring:1-2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp. SUMMARY:Mt. Baldy via the Ski-Hut then to the Backbone and the Notch (Conditioning Hike)
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Intermediate Hikers. You should have Mt. Baldy Summit experience via the Backbone Trail beforehand. \n \nDistance: 9 miles \nElevation Gain: ~4\,000 ft. \nMax elevation : 10\,064 ft. \nRating: 8/10 Strenuous \nPace: Sauntering \nTrail: Looped some pavement\, fire roads\, but mostly single track and rocky trails \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks \nHiking Poles (Optional) \nLayered clothing (possibly windy & chilly at the summit) \nMoney for ski lift (optional) and grub from The Notch \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/hdfForecast?query=91759&searchType=WEATHER) \nNOTE: \nThis is considered a high altitude hike and high altitude sickness\, AKA acute mountain sickness\, is a possibility. Good Physical health is important. The San Antonio Ski Hut/Baldy Bowl Trail is considered the most direct route to the summit of Mount Baldy (10\,064′). This climb is considered strenuous. \nAs you start up the fire road you will soon enjoy views of the San Antonio Falls. Continuing on you will pick-up a use trail that climbs northwest along San Antonio Canyon through Jeffrey and Lodgepole Pines eventually reaching the San Antonio Ski Hut. From here you stand at the base of the Baldy Bowl with its dramatic ridgeline which ascends as much as 1600 feet over the Ski Hut. Most people will then cross the bowl and follow the switchbacks up through the trees. Once you reach the top of the bowl continue on up to the summit where you will enjoy fine views of the San Gabriel Mountains including Mount Baden-Powell\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/150664/baden-powell.html)Iron Mountain\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/150975/iron-mountain-1.html)Pine Mountain\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/150950/pine-mountain.html)Dawson Peak\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/196829/dawson-peak.html)Ontario Peak\, (http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock/154873/ontario-peak.html) and many others. Looking south you will look down on the San Gabriel Valley and on exceptional days the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. \nMount San Antonio\, also known as Old Baldy or Mount Baldy\, at 10\,068 ft\, is the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains\, and the highest point in Los Angeles County. The peak\, which marks a boundary between San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County is called Baldy because of the absence of trees around the summit. Mt. Baldy is visible from much of Southern California and much of Southern California can be seen from it’s summit on a clear day. It is one of the most photographed objects of the Southern California landscape It’s snow covered peak has appeared on post cards and tourist literature for many years. There are four popular routes to the summit. All are considered moderate hikes of 8.5 to 13 miles round trip and anywhere from 3\,600 feet to 6\,000 feet of elevation gain. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \n******************************************************************* \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. SUMMARY:The Original E.T. Hike – 🐶s OK
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Join our Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nDetails\nAn HDW original\, we’ve been following the footsteps of ET since 2008!  Dogs are ok on this one. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. So let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak-and sycamore-shaded canyons and eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights \nWe’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie\, and will take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET. \nThe video below shows the location of our hike. The maker did an excellent job in juxtaposing scenes from ET with present day shots. Pay particularly close attention to the opening shots\, the dirt path a bicycle is riding on\, and the van driving into a park. SUMMARY:Corral\, Puerco Cyn & Malibu Seafood
DESCRIPTION:Weather should be nice for a coastal hike. \nLunching at Malibu Seafood after – BYOB! \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: 8 miles \nElevation Gain: 2000 ft. \nRating: 6/10 \nTrail: Single Track\, Fire Road\, rock scrambling and some overgrown Billie Goat trails \nDuration: 4-6 hours \nThe Plan \nWe’ll start on the Corral Canyon Trail and quickly head over to Puerco Canyon where we’ll be exploring some abandoned buildings along the way as we head uphill in the direction of the Backbone Trail. We’ll eventually come to a point overlooking Pepperdine University. It’s at this point we’ll be going on some lessor used and overgrown trails. Anyone able to bring garden clippers and help clean up the trail a bit would be great. Once we get back to a trail we’ll be looping around back to another portion of the Puerco Motorway. Eventually we will head back to the Coral Canyon trails completing our loop. \nMap (http://www.lamountains.com/maps/corralCanyon.pdf) \nDirections: Malibu Seafood is located on Pacific Coast Hwy about 1.8 miles west of Malibu Canyon Rd. The map in the link above is accurate. Free parking is located along PCH\, pay parking is located at the Coral Canyon Trail Head parking lot just east of the Malibu Seafood parking lot. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities.

SUMMARY:Cheseboro Canyon MTB trail potluck hike - fit beginner
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 4.3 miles\, 480′ gain.If it’s too hot\, we’ll change the return and make this an out-and-back instead of a loop\, which lowers the gain to 230′. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please also bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share and your own cup\, plate and utensils. We’ll share snacks and drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for about 60 minutes\, then return by completing the loop (or returning the way we came if it’s very hot). \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. \nDirections \n0.4 miles from the corner of Cheseboro and Palo Comado Cyn Rd.There is parking off the street at this location. If you go over the 1 lane bridge\, you’ve gone too far. \nCheseboro Canyon MTB trail5402 Chesebro Rd\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \nFrom I-101:Exit Chesebro Rd..Palo Comado Canyon Rd.Continue north.
