SUMMARY:Last Hike of the Year: Grasslands Trail to Century Lake & the Rock Pool
DESCRIPTION:Join us in popular Malibu Creek State Park for the last hike of 2019. We’ll start on the Grasslands Trail off of Mulholland Hwy and head south on a scenic hike over rolling hills and through open fields of grain. \n\n\nOur first destination is the Rock Pool\, a placid stretch of water framed by volcanic cliffs. Cliff divers and rock climbers will provide the entertainment. This generically wild-looking site has served as a backdrop for outdoor sequences filmed for Planet of the Apes\, South Pacific\, Tarzan\, Swiss Family Robinson\, and many other productions. \nNext\, we’ll head for the shaded shores of Century Lake. Ducks\, coots\, and herons frequent the lake\, their squalling and callings reverberating off the weathered\, honeycombed cliffs rising from the lake’s far shore. Redwing blackbirds flit among the cattails and rushes. The famous diving scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed here. \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is about 5 miles with about 800 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the Hike Ratings Guide\n[/av_notification] \nPOST HIKE LUNCH\nPost hike lunch is close by at La Paz Restaurant\n4505 Las Virgenes Rd.\nCalabasas\, CA 91302 \nDIRECTIONS\nTrail head and free street parking on Mulholland Hwy\, 0.2 mi west of Las Virgenes Cyn Rd

SUMMARY:First Hike of Year: Tri Peaks via Mishe Mokwa Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first hike of 2020 at the Circle X Ranch. The Mishe Mokwa Trail is known as the most beautiful trail in the Santa Monica Mountains. Round trip distance is 7.5 miles with a net elevation gain of 1000 feet (about 1700 total). \nDuring Wednesday’s hike we will be visiting 2 Earthcaches: Sandstone Peak and Inspiration Point \nSandstone Peak\, the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3\,111 feet\, is not sandstone at all. Its actually made of igneous rock formed 15 million years ago during the Conejo Volcanics. During this time Sandstone Peak grew to 10\,000 feet! After millions of years of erosion we are now left with its ruddy-colored core. From a distance its color makes it look like sandstone\, hence the name Sandstone Peak. \nAt Inspiration Point we will see more evidence of how the Santa Monica Mountains were formed. From here\, a view of Los Angeles\, Oxnard Plain\, and the Valleys of Southern California will reveal the evolution of the Farallon Plate subduction zone that created the transverse mountain range known as the Santa Monica Mountains. The Channel Islands\, which were created at the same time and by the same process that created the Santa Monica Mountains\, can be seen from here too. \nWe’ll take a side trip to Tri-Peaks\, a stack of house-sized volcanic boulders. We’ll take our main break here and explore the fascinating slots and caves beneath the giant boulders. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is required. No more than than 10 cars shall be part of the group. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & Canwood and Kanan & Roadside. The corner of Ventura and Topanga in Ralph’s parking lot is a good meeting spot also\n2. All hikers must stay on established trails\n3. No use of flour or chalk to mark trails.\n4. Practice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints \nDirections to Trailhead: \nUse this link for Google Map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=34.114167\,-118.91814&daddr=&hl=en&geocode=&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=34.114292\,-118.919857&sspn=0.003642\,0.006866&ie=UTF8&ll=34.112053\,-118.927388&spn=0.012436\,0.023603&z=15) \nPark at the Mishe Mokwa trailhead. \nMishe Mokwa Trailhead parking lot is on the both sides of Yerba Buena Rd\, 3.75 miles west of Mulholland or 7.2 miles north of PCH. Yerba Buena is very curvy so drive carefully. \nSan Fernando Valley/Calabasas: \nFrom points east of Westlake Village\, exit 101 at Kanan and go south to Mulholland. Turn west (right) to Yerba Buena 2 mi. \nFrom the 101: \nExit and turn south at CA-23 (Westlake Blvd) \nContinue to follow CA-23 south 5.2 mi. Continue straight toward Mulholland Hwy West \nAfter a couple more miles\, turn right at stop sign and continue west on Mulholland Hwy 0.4 mi \nTurn right at Little Sycamore Canyon Rd 1.9 mi \nSlight left at Yerba Buena Rd 2 mi \n[Overflow parking: Sandstone Peak 0.75 farther down\, Circle X Ranch 1.75 miles down toward PCH]

SUMMARY:Trail Grooming in Chatsworth - Twin Lakes
DESCRIPTION:Katja and I started some trail work on some of our favorite Chatsworth trails last Sunday\, but there is still a lot of work left to be done\, too much for just two people. (see pic above) \nWe’ll be continuing where we left off this Sunday and could use some of your help. If you’d like to help out please meet us at the north end of Canoga Ave under the 118 freeway. \nBring light garden tools (e.g. loppers\, snippers\, saws\, shears) wear good hiking shoes\, long pants\, long sleeve shirt and gloves. No digging will be necessary\, we just need to clear some brush growing in and across the trails. \nIn appreciation: Our trail helpers will receive a free membership in the HWD VIP Club (a $15.00 value). If you are already a member\, your subscription will be extended one year. See https://www.hikingwithdean.com/ for more info

SUMMARY:Happy Camp Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:The last time we were here was January 18\, 2011\, and so here we are again. \nHappy Camp Canyon Park\, north of Moorpark in the Santa Susana Mountains\, was home to several Chumash Indian groups. Later\, it was part of the immense Strathearn Ranch\, founded by a pioneer Simi Valley family. They ran cattle on the land and enjoyed family vacations in the back part of the canyon. \nThe 3\,000 acre park has retained its natural setting and is an important wildlife corridor linking the Simi Hills with the Santa Susana Mountains. It is a lush riparian oak woodland with an intermittant stream. The canyon is sheltered by Oak Ridge to the north and Big Mountain to the south. \nThis loop hike will follow the Happy Camp Trail through the interior of the park on an abandoned ranch road. The trail winds through open grasslands and the gorgeous stream-fed forested canyon. Wildlife include rabbits\, bobcats and Golden Eagles. \nHighlights along the way: \n-oyster and clam rich shales\n-yellow and red rock outcroppings – formed from underground oil fires\n-acorn woodpeckers\n-ranch artifacts \nHike is strenuous at 11 miles and 1850 ft total ascent \nDirections to trail head \nFrom the 118 Fwy in Simi or the 101/23 Fwys in Thousand Oaks\, take the E Los Angeles Ave/23 North exit. Go west 1 mile to Moorpark Av (Hwy 23) and turn right (north). Proceed north 2.6 miles on Hwy 23 (name will change to Walnut Canyon Rd) until you come to a bend in the road. Don’t take the bend — Go straight onto Happy Camp Rd and then an immediate right on Broadway Rd. Park in lot at the east end of the road. \nLast time I was here there was a $5 parking fee in official lot\, but some free parking outside the official lot on street.

SUMMARY:Trail Grooming in Chatsworth - Valley of the Dolls
DESCRIPTION:Everyone did a great job last week on the Switchback Trail. Let’s do the same on the Valley of the Dolls Trail. If you’d like to help out please meet us at the north end of Canoga Ave under the 118 freeway on Jan 26 \nBring light garden tools (e.g. loppers\, snippers\, saws\, shears) wear good hiking shoes\, long pants\, long sleeve shirt and gloves. No digging will be necessary\, we just need to clear some brush growing in and across the trails and realign the path into the canyon. \nMy kingdom for a Sharon Tate/Jennifer North doll! We need to refresh the doll collection on Valley of the Dolls trail. Please bring any dolls you don’t need — or maybe buy one at the dollar store\, Goodwilll\, etc? Here are some examples – the creepier the better https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/30661910/488062652/. The ones we see today were put up over 10 years and a couple of fires ago. \nIn appreciation: In appreciation: Our trail helpers will receive a free membership in the HWD Donor’s VIP Club (in lieu of $15.00 gift). SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: The Forgotten Trails of Cheeseboro & Las Virgenes Canyons
DESCRIPTION:Las Virgenes and Cheeseboro Canyons like you have never seen them before!\nThis adventure hike arose from an exploratory I did in April 2010. We’ll hike along forgotten ranch roads and use trails. It will include a hike over the eastern ridge of Cheeseboro Canyon and to the Baleen Wall along a forgotten and overgrown trail. We’ll then descend into Upper Las Virgenes Canyon by way of a vanished ranch road (This segment is sure to be very overgrown. Be prepared for a little bushwhacking). Much of the hike will be on well-known trails. \nHere are some photos from a couple previous hikes showing some of these trails\nClick on pic to enlarge \n[av_gallery ids=’62837\,62836\,62835\,62834\,62833\,62832\,62831\,62830\,62829\,62828\,62827\,62826\,62825\,62824\,62823\,62822\,62821\,62820\,62819\,62818\,62817\,62816\,62815\,62814\,62813\,62812\,62811\,62810\,62809\,62808\,62807\,62806\,62805\,62804′ style=’thumbnails’ preview_size=’portfolio’ crop_big_preview_thumbnail=’avia-gallery-big-crop-thumb’ thumb_size=’square’ columns=’7′ imagelink=’lightbox’ lazyload=’animations_off’ av_uid=’av-k5zq5ty0′ alb_description=” id=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is 8-10 miles with about 1500 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain and distance. SUMMARY:Pre-Game Hike: Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads
DESCRIPTION:Don’t forget to join our FB group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nOur 5th Annual Super Bowl Pre-Game Hike is perfect. Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. \n \nOur destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. We’ll not only bag the peak\, but we’ll also circumnavigate it along an old overgrown trail. \nHere is what it looks like:\nhttp://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=26010464 \nMore: \nhttp://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/11686632/ \nhttp://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=18735712 \n(Optional: There are a lot of giant sandstone slabs and other formations to explore\, but not required. Members who like rock climbing are encouraged to do so\, the rest of us will take pictures) \n \nCalabasas Peak (2163 ft) towers over Red Rock Canyon\, Old Topanga Canyon and bowl-shaped Cold Creek Canyon. From the top there are spectacular views into Ventura County\, the Pacific Ocean and San Fernando and Simi valleys. \n \nHike is 4.7 miles with about 1\,200 feet total gain. \nWe’ll have our snack break at a hidden cistern. SUMMARY:Hike the Parks: Joshua Tree Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Scott Turner: Author and Modern Hiker \nJoin Scott Turner\, contributing author for Modern Hiker and author of Hike the Parks: Joshua Tree National Park\, for an informative discussion on all things Joshua Tree. Scott Turner\, a contributing author for Modern Hiker and co-author of Afoot and Afield San Diego County\, got his first taste of Joshua Tree during a midnight excursion to view the Leonid meteor shower. Since then\, he’s visited Joshua Tree dozens of times\, exploring nearly every nook and cranny of the park. Now he’s compiled his knowledge of the park into a full-color\, beautifully composed\, pocket-sized volume\, Hike the Parks: Joshua Tree National Park. Join Scott for an informative discussion on all things Joshua Tree to get the lowdown on everything you need to know to have a great time at the park\, including where to hike\, when to visit\, where to stay\, how to beat the crowds\, and what to do when you get a little too cuddly with a teddy bear cholla. \nFacebook link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1111725622505405/ \nWHEREREI6220 Topanga Canyon Blvd\, Woodland Hills\, California 91367

SUMMARY:La Jolla Valley - Chumash - Ray Miller Loop
DESCRIPTION:Details\nJoin us and the small animals and birds of La Jolla Canyon on this loop hike with panoramic views of coastline and The Channel Islands. Flower blooms in the spring are phenomenal. One of the the main attractions are large swaths of native California grassland — some of the last remaining unspoiled areas in the state. \n\n\nBecause of the continued closure of the canyon trail up to the waterfall we are going to do this in a special way. We’ll meet on PCH at the entrance to the canyon and walk 2 miles down the ocean side of scenic PCH to the Chumash Trail. Several years ago PCH flooded out and broke up and had to be realigned — we’ll walk along the old broken PCH. \n  \n \nAlong the way we’ll have the opportunity to come face to face with Mugu Rock! You’ve seen it in the distance\, now you will be able to touch it. \n \nConsider the walk along PCH a warmup to the strenuous Chumash Trail. The Chumash trail is an ancient trail which leads from the Pacific Ocean to La Jolla Valley. It was used by the Chumash 7000 years ago\, and believed to be the oldest trail still in continuous use in the Santa Monica Mountains. \nThis trail is very strenuous with almost 1\,000 feet gain in only 0.6 miles. But the views from the top are spectacular \n \n  \nAfter we climb the Chumsh Trail we’ll swing around the Pt Mugu Peak Trail and bag Mugu Peak. We’ll take a group photo at the flag pole. Every year on 9/11\, since 2002\, chief selects from the Naval Base Ventura County replace the flag on Mugu Peak. The previous flag is retired in a ceremony on the base. \nHere we are a couple years back \n \n  \nAfter descending the peak we’ll head into the grasslands of La Jolla Valley \n \nWe’ll be taking our break at the hike-in campsite. There is a fancy outhouse there. One of the highlights along the way is this pond. Will there be water this week? Naw. \n \nAfter our lunch break we’ll hike along the ridge separating Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. We’ll return to our cars via the Ray Miller Trail – the western terminus of the Backbone Trail \nHere us the view from the Ray Miller Trail \n \n  \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”] \n  \nHike is 12 miles with about 2\,200 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain and distance. If you have to park inside there is an iron ranger that accepts credit cards\, or maybe even a human at the gate. \nFrom Los Angeles\, after a long and relaxing drive down the Pacific Coast Highway (22 miles past Malibu Canyon)\, you’ll enter Ventura County and pass the so-called “Great Sand Dune.” Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Park on PCH on either side of entrance. \nFrom Ventura: Entrance is a couple miles after Las Posas. Park on land side of PCH on either side of entrance. \nMeet on PCH at entrance to park

SUMMARY:Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Classic! \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \n \nThe site was owned by President Reagan between 1957 and 1967\, before he was elected Governor of California. Prior to the Woolsey fire\, the Reagan Ranch property still had the original barn and stables\, which were used as the park maintenance facility. \nTrails loop through rolling meadowlands and grand old oaks and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \n\n\nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. The medic tents have been removed\, but the location is still recognizable\, providing a rich experience for hikers. \n[av_image src=’https://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/03121937/mash.jpg’ attachment=’63152′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ styling=” hover=” link=” target=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ copyright=” animation=’no-animation’ av_uid=’av-l3obcq’ id=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”][/av_image] \n  \nBetween the MASH set and the ranch we’ll enjoy a short snack break at Century Lake. Part of the famous jump into the river by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paul Newman & Robert Redford) was done by stuntmen at Century Lake (with plenty of Hollywood magic helping out) because the river in Colorado seen in the film wasn’t deep enough to support such a high jump. \n[av_image src=’https://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/03121937/century-lake.jpg’ attachment=’63154′ attachment_size=’full’ align=’center’ styling=” hover=” link=” target=” caption=” font_size=” appearance=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ copyright=” animation=’no-animation’ av_uid=’av-op3y9m’ id=” custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”][/av_image] \n  \nOn our return to the ranch we’ll take a side trip to a scenic vista point at the top of Lake View Trail will It will provide us a beautiful view of Malibou Lake and the surrounding mountains. Reagan was the honorary mayor of Malibou Lake in 1953. \n[av_image src=’https://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/03121839/Pasted-2.jpg’ attachment=’63834′ attachment_size=’large’ copyright=” caption=” styling=” align=’center’ font_size=” overlay_opacity=’0.4′ overlay_color=’#000000′ overlay_text_color=’#ffffff’ animation=’no-animation’ hover=” appearance=” link=” target=” id=” custom_class=” av_element_hidden_in_editor=’0′ av_uid=’av-suugwq’ admin_preview_bg=”][/av_image] \n  \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ color=’orange’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ border=’solid’ size=’large’ custom_class=” av_uid=’av-380l96′ admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is 6.5-7 miles with about 1\,000 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. SUMMARY:Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Adventure Hike
DESCRIPTION:I am calling this an “adventure hike” due to ongoing housing development in the area. There might be a little bushwhacking and some creeking. \nWe’ll be hiking on a couple trails we had cleaned up earlier this year. \nOur loop hike begins at the north end of Canoga Avenue and meanders north through Chatsworth’s Deer Lake Highlands and a network of of equestrian trails. From above the highlands we will descend into Echo Canyon creating a loop with Devils Canyon. Devils Canyon with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. Live Oak and Willow trees fill the canyon and sandstone geology of the wildest kind is found. \n\n\nHere is a slide show from a couple similar hikes a while back.\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/L3kKEbqxHF8′ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” id=” custom_class=” av_uid=’av-sfnxhm’] \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ color=’orange’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ border=’solid’ size=’large’ custom_class=” av_uid=’av-380l96′ admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is about 7 or 8 miles with about 1\,500 ft total ascent and is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. SUMMARY:Paramount Ranch: Past & Future
DESCRIPTION:A SMMNRA Event \nLights! Camera! Action! Paramount Ranch’s convenient location and mountainous backdrop have captured the vision of hundreds of filmmakers. Elaborate movie sets have come and gone while the ranch’s massive oak trees have remained as silent witnesses. \nJoin a ranger-led walk around the ranch to learn about how it has changed over the past century and what the future may hold for this popular filming location. \nMeet at the trailhead kiosk next to the bridge. Wear sturdy shoes for uneven terrain. We recommend bringing water\, a hat\, and sun protection\, as there is little shade on the walk. Restrooms available. Heavy rain cancels. For any questions\, including directions\, please call the visitor center at (805) 370-2301.

SUMMARY:VIP Hike: Sullivan's Secrets
DESCRIPTION:A loop hike along both sides of the eastern ridge of Sullivan Canyon. \nDetails\nThe hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek through a shady canyon. Alive with the singing of birds\, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore\, oak\, and willow trees. We’ll be hiking on both the Sullivan side and the Mandeville side of the eastern ridge dividing the two canyons. \n\n\nThis will be a brand new custom hike with unknown mileage and total ascent. I estimate around 8 miles with 2000+ ft total ascent. \nAt the beginning of hike we will explore a trail I haven’t seen in a few years and hope its still passable. The hike will include a steep ascent and an equally steep descent on trails that are probably unknown to the veteran Sullivan Canyon hiker. Trekking poles are recommended. I don’t expect any necessary bushwhacking. \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ color=’orange’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ border=’solid’ size=’large’ custom_class=” av_uid=’av-380l96′ admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is rated “DIFFICULT” due to terrain. See the Hike Ratings Guide\n[/av_notification] \nDirections\nFrom Sunset Boulevard\, 2.3 miles west of the 405\, turn north onto Mandeville Canyon Road. After a third of a mile\, turn left onto Westridge Road. Drive up Westridge Road for 1.2 miles and turn left on Bayliss Road. Drive two blocks and make another left on Queensferry Road and find a place to legally park. \nThere is not much parking on Queensferry so be prepared to park on Bayliss \nWe’ll meet at the big green gate at end of Queensferry Rd \nTrailhead address: \n2103 Queensferry Road\, Los Angeles\, CA 90049

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon to Elliott Mountain and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:[av_notification title=’Note’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue806′ font=’web1′ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ color=’green’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ border=’solid’ size=’large’ custom_class=” av_uid=’av-sk2jrx’ admin_preview_bg=”]\nThis hike will include two of the trails in the Conejo Open Challenge: The Lichen Trail and the Plateau Rim Trail.\n[/av_notification] \nDetails\nThe trail up Elliot Mountain was built May 2015. The mountain\, a bench and the trail are named after Burt Elliott who was very active with Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Burt died of cancer in the Spring of 2014. He was the go-to guy for all things Conejo Open Space. We use the 2015 trail these days but here is what it looked like before that — just a little use trail that gave us something to complain about 🙀 \n \nWe began exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “The Weekday Hikers.” At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. From 2008 to 2011 Hill Canyon was the location of our unofficial club house. \n\n\nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting the use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. This photo is from February 2012 when we attended the bridge opening. See more (http://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=5956072) \n  \nHere is a slide show of a February 2015 hike\n \n  \nHike will be about 9 miles with 1700 ft total ascent \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ color=’orange’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ border=’solid’ size=’large’ custom_class=” av_uid=’av-380l96′ admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is rated “MEDIUM”. See the Hike Ratings Guide\n[/av_notification] \nPOST-HIKE LUNCH\nDon Cuco\, Moorpark\n254 Los Angeles Avenue \nWelcome \n \nAbout Hill Canyon\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridge lines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \nHill Canyon and the Western Plateau is now the Conejo Canyons Open Space. \nWho is that guy up there? \n \nBring 2 Qt water\, lugsoles\, snacks\, sunscreen\, hat \nParking\nThere are two parking lots — one at the trail head and one at the Park/corrals. The trail head lot is free. The corral lot was $4.00 but by the time of this hike its supposed to be free. We’ll meet at the trailhead lot (past the Park). \n \n“If you’re early\, you’re on time. If you’re on time\, you’re late. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up”

SUMMARY:Fish Canyon to Piano Box Canyon\, Santa Clarita
DESCRIPTION:*** Rain or hot weather will cancel this hike *** \nThis is an eight mile\, out and back\, moderately casual hike. We will ramble through amazingly beautiful canyons located above Castaic Lake. Thirty-seven types of endangered species live in this area including the California Condor that we may see flying high above. \nWe will meet at the white gate at 9:00am and depart promptly at 9:10. \nThe hike will start on a stretch of asphalt road that descends about ½ mile (this is the steepest portion of the entire hike). We will cross over a bridge to a dirt road that we will follow for a short distance before splitting off to the trail through Fish Canyon and continuing to our destination at the entrance of Piano Box Canyon. \nFish Canyon is interspersed with portions of an old concrete road built in the 1930’s. Throughout the hike we will cross a dry creek bed several times\, but we may encounter some water in the creek so be prepared to get your feet wet. Along the way\, we will pass a once flourishing national forest campground. There is also an old Chumash hut (‘ap) that we can explore. We will then split off the main trail onto a single track wooded trail toward Piano Box Canyon. \nAt Piano Box Canyon we will rest and have lunch or snacks. Before heading back we will have time to explore the area and enjoy the steep and dramatic beautiful canyon walls of reddish/orange rock. At the entrance of Piano Box Canyon are remnants of machinery of an old dilapidated mine. \nDIRECTIONS:34.6022\, -118.67072637773 Templin Highway\, Angeles National Forest\, Castaic\, CA 91384 \nTake the I-5 Freeway North. Exit at Templin Highway East. Turn right at bottom of ramp. Follow this curvy road straight (i.e. do not turn off it)\, about 10 mins max\, all the way until it ends at a closed white gate/ concrete barrier. You can park along the road beside it\, leave nothing showing in your vehicle. \nHIKING DETAILS:Distance: ~ 8 Miles (out and back) the trail is fairly level with slight inclines the entire way\, the only major hill is the asphalt road coming back up to the cars.Elevation gain: ~ 500′Hiking time: 4+ hoursDifficulty: Fit beginner/intermediateDogs: Leashed\, per State law.Restrooms: There is an outhouse at the bottom of the asphalt road but it might be knocked over on its side or gone.Drinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free.Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall. \nWHAT TO BRING:2+ liters of waterGood hiking shoes/bootsLunch/Snacks/Electrolites/Energy FoodSunscreenHatsDress according to the weather \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY:• You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions.• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of Hike and Explore from all liability in case of possible injuries.• The organizers of Hike and Explore are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:(Friday) Mt. Lowe Railroad/Inspiration Pt/Echo Mt. - 11.5 Mile Loop
DESCRIPTION:All aboard for the Self-Guided Hiking Tour of the Historic Mt Lowe Pacific Electric Railroad with stops at Echo Mountain\, Ye Alpine Tavern\, Inspiration Point and points in between: \nStation 1: Echo MountainStation 2: View of Circular BridgeStation 3: Cape of Good HopeStation 4: Dawn Station/Devil’s SlideStation 5: Horseshoe CurveStation 6: Circular BridgeStation 7: Horseshoe Curve OverviewStation 8: Granite GateStation 9: Ye Alpine TavernStation 10: Inspiration Point \nRequired reading: (http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm) http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm \nThis hike is considered one of the most important historical railway hikes in the United States. \nHere is a video of the Mt Lowe Trolley: \nWe won’t be doing the first incline. Go in about 30 sec to start at Station 1. Watch for the Circular Bridge (Station 6). \nTotal elevation gain is about 3000 ft. There will be many stops along the way so clear your calendar for this day. Stamp this hike “strenuous.” \nBackstory \nProfessor Thaddeus Lowe\, Civil War balloonist\, man of fame and fortune\, was the quintessential California dreamer. His dream was to build a railway into—and a resort complex atop—the San Gabriel Mountains high above Pasadena. In the 1890s\, his dream became a reality. During the height of its popularity\, millions took Professor Lowe’s “Railway to the Clouds” to fine hotels and spectacular views of Southern California. Until it was abandoned in the 1930s\, it was the Southland’s most popular tourist attraction. \nDirections to Trailhead \nFrom I-210\, in Pasadena\, exit at Lake Ave. north. Drive 3.6 miles North on Lake Ave. to E Loma Alta Drive; the old stone entrance to the Cobb Estate is located where the two streets meet. Park along the street\, being sure not to block private driveways. \nWeather Watch \nAltadena WeatherCam (http://www.westphalfamily.com/wxdata2.html) \nForecast (http://www.findlocalweather.com/pinpoint/us/ca/mount+lowe+railway+historical+marker/current15618.html)

SUMMARY:Beach Walk\, Breakfast\, and a Hike in Summerland
DESCRIPTION:This is a 6.5 mile easy to moderate hike with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nDue to Covid-19\, I am limiting this hike to 7 people with no guests. Each person must maintain a distance of 6 feet or more\, and wear a mask when necessary. \nWe will start promptly at 9:15 \nFrom the Loon Point parking lot\, the trail will take us down to the sandy shore where we will walk a mile on an isolated beach with views of sandstone cliffs\, mossy rocks\, and perhaps remnants of oil fields and piers that at one time stood there. \nThis stretch of beach will lead us to Lookout Park with real bathrooms. Then the road will take us into the town of Summerland where we will stop for breakfast at the Summerland Beach Café. SUMMARY:Garapito Canyon - Eagle Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \n \nOur hike begins at the top of Reseda Blvd\, the western gateway to the Big Wild. Shortly after the hike begins we descend along the Bent Arrow Trail — a narrow path that will take us on winding route up a south-facing slope that finally tops out on a rounded\, nearly flat ridge. A grassy knoll to our right marks the start of the Garapito Canyon Trail \n \nWe’ll descend the narrow Garapito Trail cutting a sinuous course through mature chaparral — mostly mountain mahogany and ceanothus up to 20 feet tall. The blossoms of the ceanothus exude an attractive wild honey scent in spring. Tunneling through the tall brush\, the trail eventually switchbacks down to the sycamore-shaded canyon bottom\, crossing two forks of Garapito Creek and then contours a short distance over to an east fork. \n \nThe climb out of Garapito Canyon will bring us to our detination: Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park. It will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \n \nTo make this a loop we’ll return to the Bent Arrow trail via the Temescal Ridge Trail. Hike is about 8 miles with 1500′ total ascent.Directions \nFrom the 101 in Tarzana exit Reseda Blvd and head south. Go about 3 miles and drive into the park near the top of Reseda. There is a painted line crossing Reseda Blvd inside the park. Parking is free on the downhill side of the line. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Corral Canyon - Puerco Canyon Loop - Malibu Seafood - BYOB
DESCRIPTION:Details\nOn this one we’ll visit the old pig farm and have a post-hike lunch at Malibu Seafood Patio where they let you bring your own drink. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. We’ll return to the restaurant via another secret trail \nWe’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and mysterious buildings… \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is about 6 miles with about 1\,250 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \n \n \nAfter-hike shenanigans will take place at Spruzzo Malibu (http://www.spruzzomalibu.com/)\, right on the corner of Busch Dr and PCH — you pass it on the way out. \nDirections: From Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu\, one mile west of Kanan Dume Road\, turn north on Bonsall Drive. Follow Bonsall to its dead end at the mouth of Zuma Canyon. Ample\, FREE parking. \nBring at least one qt water\, hiking shoes/boots\, hat\, sunscreen\, snacks \nNote: When leaving\, do not return to PCH on Bonsall. Instead\, make a right on Rainsford Place\, then left on Busch Dr to PCH. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is desired. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & 101.\n2. All hikers must stay on established trails\n3. No use of flour or chalk to mark trails.\n4. Practice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints

SUMMARY:🌚 No Moon Hike: Natoma Loop and a Little More
DESCRIPTION:Natoma Loop Trail is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located in Woodland Hills. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop a bit into the cool side of Mulholland for a distance of about 3.5 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nNO WHITE LIGHTS ALLOWED ON HIKE. Green and/or red lights are ok. If you don’t have one walk with someone who does or don’t bother attending. Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes. https://amzn.to/2E9Fb30. (emergencies excepted\, of course) \nIt will be a warm evening but at least the sun won’t be beating down on us while we watch it set with great views of the Valley. Bring something cold to drink at the top 🍺🍹 \nNOTE: YOU SHOULD WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHERE SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. BRINGING A MASK OR FACE COVERING IS MANDATORY FOR ATTENDING THIS HIKE. \nDirections \nProceed to the south end of Natoma Ave and park on right side of street in dirt lot. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.
