SUMMARY:Las Llajas Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:It looks like we can once again make a nice 10 mile loop up Las Llajas Canyon. We’ll pass by some of the first oil wells drilled in California in the early 1900’s and take a break at the 1920’s excavator left behind from the Coquina Mine. \nSTATS \nDistance: 10+ mi \nElevation Gain: 2\,200 ft \nRating: 7/10 \nTrail: Fire-road\, trail\, loop \nPace: Moderate \nFees/pass: none \nTHE STORY \nIn the early 1900s this land was owned by the Simi Valley Oil Company and later purchased by Howard Marr in the 1920s. It became known as Marrland. In 1929 Howard Marr leased a portion of his land to the Tapo Alto Shell and Fertilizer Company to mine for limestone. \nHeavy equipment was brought in to strip the hilltop of an unusually pure form of calcium carbonate from a fossilized reef called Coquina Limestone (shell or oyster limestone). The State Department of Agriculture found it to be 98% pure. At one time\, this entire area was underwater and you can see evidence of this in the thousands of shells embedded in the rock near the mine. \nMining operations ceased in 1935. The road used to bring in equipment had been largely washed away and much of the mining equipment was left behind. The main attraction is the P&H Company power shovel. It’s a Model 206\, considered to be a small power shovel but it put P&H on the map. The company would ultimately meet its downfall due to asbestos in the brake linings. Asbestos was touted as a miracle mineral for much of the 20th century. At P&H’s manufacturing plants\, brake linings regularly had to be grinded down in order to fit casings on cranes and other machinery. The process released large amounts of asbestos dust into the air\, polluting the work environment and putting workers’ health at risk. \nSome interesting history about the name: Las Llajas was first used in 1931 and is likely a misspelling of the spanish words las llagas which translates to the wounds\, referring to the stigmata of a Roman Catholic saint. From 1914-1920 a cult called Pisgah Grande lived in this canyon and created a secluded colony with 30 buildings. It had over 300 members. If you look in the right places\, you can still find old bricks stamped with Pisgah markings where buildings used to rest. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Chumash - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 1100′ gain\, Intermediate. \nFit beginners can still do it\, but they should be aware that the entire hike outbound is a steady incline. Nothing super steep\, just continuous and quite strenuous for many. \nThat’s OK\, because this is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up\, and there are virtually no junctions where one can get lost. \nThis is one of the more famous hikes in Simi Valley\, and for good reason. Much of the hike takes place along the edge of the mountain. The trail in spots is a bit rugged and rocky\, so a good tread on your shoes is recommended. \nIt is a part of the Chumash Natural Park that includes sandstone rock formations\, caves\, and beautiful vistas of Simi Valley. The land is owned by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and the Rancho Simi Recreation & Park District. It is maintained by the Rancho Simi Trailblazers and patrolled by the Volunteer Trail Safety Service. \nWe’ll be climbing for about 2 miles to “flat rock”\, where we’ll stop to have our traditional social event\, sharing snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). Since there is really no way to get lost on this hike\, those that wish to move ahead at a faster pace are welcome to do so\, but keep in mind where we plan on stopping\, and then ultimately turning back. \nThe Route. \nHike. \nDistance: 4.0 milesGain: 1100′Distribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Intermediate.Shape: Out and back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.Trail Variations: The entire first half is incline. Some of the trail is rugged sandstone. Some of the trail is covered in large gravel. Proceed carefully.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Encelia \nAka\, California Bush Sunflower\, California Brittlebush\, Coast Sunflower\, El Dorado. \nCenter is brown. When the center is yellow\, it is Brittlebush\, from the brittleness of the stems. This is from the daisy family\, and it is typically used as an ornamental plant. \nMediterranean Mustard / Black Mustard \nMediterranean mustard seeds are yellow or white\, while Black mustard seeds are brown or black. The flowers look the same. \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. Grind seeds and mix with water and vinegar to make prepared mustard. This is often a very abundant noxious weed (has been designated by an agricultural authority as one that is injurious to agricultural or horticultural crops\, natural habitats or ecosystems\, or humans or livestock.). It grows everywhere along the sides of the trail\, often having to be cut back during trail maintenance. \nDirections: \nChumash Trail3200 Flanagan Dr.Simi Valley\, CA 93063Coordinates of trailhead: 34.293497\, -118.671176 \nFrom CA-118:I-118\, exit Yosemite.North on Yosemite for 1.3 miles.Right (east) on Flanagan Dr. for 08. miles.Continue until the street ends and park. \nRelease of Liability: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Red Rock Canyon to Calabasas Peak
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/red-rock-canyon-to-calabasas-peak \nHello Fellow hikers\,Okay this is going to be a interesting one. From the start your drive into the parking lot will be on a dirt road that maybe bumpy so you might have to drive a little slow. There will be a $5 fee to park you should end up at Red Rock Canyon Park. Some can park outside the lot and walk in but there isn’t a lot of spots for this. The parking lot itself maybe a little small so will have to put a limit on the hike. Now for the hike. We will be making a short hike on a side trail to the reclining man cave (its a cave that looks like a face of a man lying on the ground) only .22 additional mileage will add on to our 4.2 or we can also continue on to Red Rock Canyon Lookout which is 1.1 miles. Now our main trail sounds like it has a nice incline to the top with sections more of a incline than other sections on the trail. There will be shade from the start then opens to views. Will make our way to the top of Calabasas Peak (there will be a peak marker) then head to the concrete slab to finish up the hike and head back. This one is going to be a good workout. I attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/red-rock-canyon-to-calabasas-peak \nTrail out and backRated moderateMiles 4.2 (probably a little more with our additional stop)Elevation Gain 1059 ftDogs allowed \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:1) Hike your own hike2) Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. SUMMARY:The scenic route to Mt. Baden-Powell from Dawson Saddle and Return
DESCRIPTION:Our route takes us up the Dawson saddle and connects with the PCT just east of Throop Peak. From there we proceed east on a steady grade on the PCT passing Mt. Burham and then up and onto Mt. Baden Powell. At the top we will plan on having a snack\, signing the register and taking some great photographs of the scenery and the Boy Scout summit monument. \nDistance: 9.5 miles Duration: 5-6 Hours. \nLunch and or drinks at Newcomb’s Ranch Cafe after is an option. \nElevation Gain: 2\,600 ft. \nElevation at Mt. Baden Powell: 9\,380 ft. \nRating: Moderate 6/10 Out and Back \nAbout the hike:Some years ago the Boy Scouts built a beautiful feeder route to the Pacific Crest Trail from Dawson Saddle on Hwy 2. The neat thing is\, the trail head at the highway is at 7\,900 feet\, the highest elevation for the entire Angeles Crest Hwy 2. \nWhat does this mean for us? Simply put\, with a moderate amount of effort you can experience the prettiest portion of the PCT in Southern California and summit Mt. Baden Powell through the back door\, all without the 4 mile vertical slug fest coming up from Vincent Gap. This entire route generates incredible vistas as you traverse the spine of the back range of the San Gabriels. On one side is the the Mojave Desert while Los Angeles spreads out beneath on the other. The views on this hike just keep getting better and better until they culminate on the summit of Baden-Powell with 360 degree views that go on to infinity\, simply an amazing place. Equally as important\, from start to finish\, this section of the PCT is all beautiful Alpine forest\, you’d swear you should be seeing folks walking by in Lederhosen! \nTo contact me call my cell at 805-630-4277 \nDawson Saddle is at: \nMile Marker 69.5 \n(measured from its start down in LA). Look for a largeCal Trans metal service building on the north side of the road \nA sign on the building reads Dawson Saddle. Continue on about 200 ft to the apex of the curve and park on the north side of the road where it is widened out for parking. \nhttps://www.google.com/maps/dir/34.3682108\,-117.8020144/34.2090726\,-118.1999382/@34.3679383\,-117.8018458\,309m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m3!4m2!1m0!1m0?hl=en \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. SUMMARY:EXPLORATORY TREK TO THE HOODOOS WITHIN THE RAZORBACKS - SERIES #3
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nEXPLORATORY TREK AMONGST THE HOODOOS OF THE RAZORBACKSI have to get this in now before the rains come and make it too hard to traverse the canyons. \nThis trek should prove to be more provocative than all previous trips into the Razorbacks as we hike amongst new Hoodoos and slot canyons. \nHave you looked at our past events into the RAZORBACK ridge area of the Los Padres National Forest and wished you were able to enjoy this area but missed out. Well\, I’ll now be posting a series of events for all our CDH members to enjoy this area below pinyon pine covered ridges. We’ll start off with the easier hikes and work up to exploratory ones. I’ll number these so that you’ll be able to identify which ones you have done. As in Bryce Canyon\, there are many canyons\, but unlike Bryce where you have to stay on the trails\, this area has but one trail. the rest of the events will be x-country routes. All our events will first have us meet at the Flying J Travel Center in Lebec and car pool from there to our destinations about 30 minutes away. \n======================= RAZORBACKS #3 ============================== \nThis third area in the Razorbacks was first seen by us when we took a cross country trek above Bowl #3 to view the spectacular weather created rock sculptures in the Los Padres National Forest. For this trek we will be inside the bowl traveling 5+ miles with a gain of at least 1000′ in search of the incredible and mysterious Hoodoos that haunt this unique place. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME:The Flying J Travel Center in Lebec at 8:00 am:https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’00.4%22N+118%C2%B053’10.2%22W/@34.8167674\,-118.8883557\,918m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m17!1m10!4m9!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1365275!2d34.7489344!1m3!2m2!1d-119.1584843!2d34.7287962!3e0!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8167631!4d-118.8861666From here we’ll caravan to our destination a half hour away to begin our cross country trek. Although this trek will be geared for our intermediate hikers that like an off trail hike\, our stronger hikers will enjoy this as well. Just remember that it will be at a slow intermediate pace. SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:Beginner. 5 miles\, 500′ gain. \nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. That means it’s wide enough for a vehicle. To make up for the lack of elevation\, the distance will be about 5 miles round trip. \nWhen I hiked this\, I never noticed any real gain but ended up measuring about 500′ from the combination of small hills. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult than just walking a dirt trail\, almost like walking on the beach. \nWhat this hike lacks in ridge-top views\, it makes up for in its varied surrounding flora: There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nThe walk starts out in the gravel parking lot next to the Rustic Canyon golf course parking lot\, where there is a trail head along the north edge and plenty of room for at least 35 cars. We’ll walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there are no dogs allowed. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy that I’m told is the result of horses. \nThe landscape will change from very dry to very green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some snacks\, beverages\, and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes: \nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \nJimson Weed \nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nThese chemicals interfere with one of the chemical messengers (acetylcholine) in the brain and nerves. Ingesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \nCastor Bean \nThe seeds contain ricin and are poisonous to people\, animals and insects. Ricin is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed cause skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. Ricin does not partition into the oil because it is water-soluble\, therefore\, castor oil does not contain ricin\, provided that no cross-contamination occurred during its production. \nUsed in bone marrow transplants\, cancer therapies\, AIDS treatment\, and can selectively destroy neurons by injecting ricin into nerves. \nDirections: \nHappy Camp15100 Happy Camp Canyon Rd.Moorpark\, CA 9302134.311460\,-118.866110If you use this address\, we’ll be just beyond the far southeast corner of the clubhouse lot. \nFrom the 118 and from the 101:Head to towards the intersection of I-118 and CA-23.Exit 19A Princeton Ave.\, turn right (north) if coming from the east\, left coming from CA-23.Princeton Ave. north for 0.2 miles.Left on Campus Park Dr. for 0.4 miles and continue on Happy Camp Canyon Rd. for 0.7 miles.Follow signs to Rustic Canyon golf course.Park on the right in gravel lot\, just before golf course paved lot. \nThe Hike:Distance: 5 miles\, 3 hoursElevation Gain: 500′Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): EasyPace: 2.0 mphDogs: No. This is a park rule\, not mine. SUMMARY:WESTLAKE OVERLOOK TRAIL (A local monster)
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nTHE LAS VIRGENES RESERVOIR \nWESTLAKE VISTA PEAK (2445′) – One of the loneliest peaks in The Santa Monica Mountains \nTired of mundane hikes\, then join me on one of my favorite local transcendent treks (Forth time posted on our CDH site). \nThis is a Frankenstein type trail that was put together by stitching up some local “use” trails overlooking the Westlake Village area. This monster is for those who don’t scare easily to the challenges it offers. There are two peaks along the way that will require some class 3 rock scrambling over very steep terrain. The pay off will be near the end of this trek when you’ll have a unique view of three lakes (Sherwood\, Westlake and Las Virgenes reservoirs) and the Pacific Ocean. This is similar to the Transcendent Taylor Trek seen in Jotce’s video\, but instead of an in and out trek\, I have added “use” trails at the beginning and end so that we can accomplish this via a car shuttle\, thus avoiding the monotony of back tracking. The 7+ miles 2000’ gain is one of the toughest around this area. So\, if you feel that you have what it takes and the site of blood doesn’t bother you\, sign up for this local monster. \nCheck out the pictures taken by members and the video that Joyce made of our adventure in this area: \npics (http://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/25816653/) \nvideo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1ScUY2p8_4&feature=youtu.be) \nMEET UP LOCATION: Exit the 101 FWY at Westlake Blvd in Thousand Oaks. SUMMARY:🌻The Pentachaeta Loop
DESCRIPTION:A pre-Thanksgiving workout\, this one is another HWD original! I put this one together back in 2009 after exploring some Westlake Village use trails\, and they have gotten a lot more use since then. \nBlast from the past: Here are photos from the first group hike in December 2009: https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=780881. Did you notice the ice on the trail? \nWith combination of use trails\, some minor rock scrambling and views of two local lakes\, the result is probably the best hike in Westlake Village. \nThe Pentachaeta Trail\, the main feature of Triunfo Creek Park\, is named after the Pentachaeta lyonii\, a federally-listed endangered flower found in the park. The yellow\, daisy-like flower is found only in Southern California\, and blooms between April and June. \nWe will join each end of the Pentachaeta Trail with the ridgeline that divides Triunfo and Lobo Canyons to make a 5.5-mile loop. Along the way we will have views of the Las Virgenes Reservoir and Westlake Reservoir (see if you can spot them in the photos below). We may do some peakbagging too! There is a total ascent of about 1\,400 ft with 700′ of it in the first 1.5 miles\, some of it rocky. A trekking pole (for a couple of downhill sections) and sturdy hiking boots recommended. The hike is more strenuous than it sounds. \n\n\n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 Freeway exit Lindero Canyon Rd and turn south. At the end of Lindero\, turn left onto Triunfo Canyon Rd. Trailhead is on the right\, across from entrance to Oak Forest Mobile Home Park \n—————————————————————————————————- \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER.

SUMMARY:Don's Rocky IV Turkey Trot
DESCRIPTION:Want to walk off some of that Thanksgiving feast and not deal with the shopping mall crowds? Then let’s do our annual after Thanksgiving Day Don’s Rocky IV Not the Movie. This is about a five hour hike\, so we should be back to our cars by 2:00pm or thereabouts. \n \nDistance: 9 miles Dual Rating: Baldy Lovers: 3/10 Baldy Haters: 6/10 \nElevation gain: 1400 feet The Trail: A figure 8 loop through 4 rocky parks. \nThe Plan: I’ve improved a previous route as we’ll be taking the Old Stagecoach Road to Rocky Peak to Corriganville Park via the Wildlife Corridor to Chatsworth Park to our cars. \nBring lunch as there are ample picnic tables in Corriganville. \nThe Old Santa Susana Stagecoach Road is a route taken by early travelers between the San Fernando Valley and Simi Valley near Chatsworth\, California via the Santa Susana Pass. The main route climbs through what is now Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park\, with a branch in Chatsworth Park South. It was an important artery linking the Los Angeles Basin and inland Ventura county\, and was part of the main route for travel by stagecoach between Los Angeles and San Francisco from 1861 until the opening of rail traffic between the cities in 1876. The Old Santa Susana Stage Road is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. \nDogs are welcome\, if friendly and must be leashed\, washed\, fed and picked up after. Be on the lookout for rattlesnakes\, ticks\, zombies\, great views\, awesome sights\, friendly fellow hikers and martians. \nCheck the Weather Mapquest[…] \nDirections: Go west on Devonshire from Topanga Canyon as if you are going to Chatsworth Park. Instead of driving into the (closed) park entrance\, turn left (south) on Larwin Street and go one block until you come to a chain link fence on your right. This is very easy to locate because in addition to the fence\, an old set of power lines runs directly overhead. Park along the curb. We will enter the park through a gap in the fence. \n1 – A walk \n2 – A longer walk \n3 – 3 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 5+ mile hike w/1000 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/1000 ft. elevation gain \n7 – 7+ mile hike w/1500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to do CPR) \n8 – 5+ mile hike w/2000 ft. elevation gain (a great feeling of accomplishment when done) \n9 – use your imagination \n10 – I don’t lead or do these. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY IMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: I am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). SUMMARY:Mt. Hillyer from Chilao Flat Visitor Center
DESCRIPTION:This is a short\, but very sweet hike with lots of eye candy including fall colors\, impressive boulder outcroppings and interesting historical significance. I am open to extending the distance in any direction to add more mileage (as an out and back)\, but due to trailhead closures still in effect\, we cannot make this a true shuttle hike to and from Three Points or Devils Canyon Trailhead which are both still closed\, per Angeles Forest Order. \nChilao Visitor Center to Silver Moccasin Trail (.5 mile)Silver Moccasin Trail to Horse Flats Campground (1 mile)Horse Flats Campground to Mt. Hillyer via Mt. Hillyer Trail (2.5 miles)Return the same route. \nDISTANCE: ~6 milesELEVATION GAIN: ~1\,100′PARKING: If parking anyplace other than the Visitor Center\, a National Forest Adventure Pass is required to be displayed on vehicles parked while visitors are hiking. \nDirections: From I-210 in La Canada\, take the Angeles Crest Highway (route 2) northeast for 26 miles to the turnout for the Chilao Flat Visitor Center (not to be confused with the turnout for the Chilao Campground\, which comes earlier if you’re coming from L.A.) Turn left and park at the Visitor Center\, as the parking at the Silver Moccasin trailhead is very limited. \nHISTORY: Named for Mary Hillyer (ca.1865-1933)\, described by Robinson as “a competent and much beloved clerk” who worked during the 1920’s in the office of William V. Mendenhall\, the Angeles National Forest Supervisor (1929-57). Nevertheless\, it has often been argued that this summit might have been more appropriately titled after one of its early residents. This area was once deep in the forest and is rich in lore. The main Gabrieleño cross-mountain trail passed by this peak\, however Indian names for this area are long forgotten. It was criscrossed by bandidos during the wide-open years when Los Angeles was busy earning the title of “Murder Capitol of America”. About this time\, the first known dweller near “Hillyer” was the romantic and self-described “caballero” Tiburcio Vasquez (1835-75) who made the eastern slopes of this peak his mountain headquarters. Deeply resenting the results of the Mexican American War\, he considered himself a guerrilla freedom-fighter who wouldn’t admit defeat. He boasted no jail could hold him (probably because he had a girl in every hamlet and they usually came to his rescue) but eventually he was convicted and hung for being a notorious horse thief. Vasquez Rocks\, and Vasquez Canyon are also named for him. “Horse Flats” below the summit of “Hillyer” is so named because Vasquez often pastured his herds there. \nJose Gonzales\, one of his vaqueros\, was very handy with a knife. But when he dispatched a bear with one\, his amazed pals nicknamed him “Chillia”which refers to “chili pepper”\, and could translate as “hot\, stuff”. \nIn close proximity to Mt. Hillyer\, the first American pioneer to settle the forest was Lewis Newcomb (ca.1860-1950). He settled here in 1890\, and began a solitary life as one of the most well-known and knowledgeable of local mountain men. He homesteaded a quarter-section\, and because of his intimate knowledge of these mountains was appointed as one of the first Forest Ranger’s in the newly created San Gabriel Timberland Reserve (1898). He was involved in the construction of many structures both for friends and for the Forest Service. He built the nation’s first Ranger Station at West Fork (1900) as well as the one at Pine (now Charlton) Flat (1902) where he served for many years. He is responsible for both blazing many mountain trails such as the one down “Shortcut Canyon” and over the east slope of Mount Wilson to Santa Anita Canyon. In 1910 he built his third log home that is still cited on maps as “Louie’s cabin”. His name also survives in the Newcomb Ranch Inn\, and in Newcomb Pass near Mount Wilson. He left the mountain in 1940 because he felt that the new Angeles Crest Highway (which reached here in 1938)\, had “ruined the place”. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:MT. BADEN POWELL - THE UNPARALLED ASCENT AND DESCENT ROUTE
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nBefore the rain and snow hits this area and while it’s nice and cool\, I’m planning on taking on Mount Baden Powell via The Big Horn Mine. \nTHIS EVENT WILL INVOLVE 2.75 MILES OF VERY STEEP OFF TRAIL HIKING ALONG RIDGES and 2.75 miles of trails. Don’t let the low mileage fool you\, this will be a great conditioning hike. You’ll be taking on Mt. Baden Powell as so few have ever done before. \nTHE TREK: From The Vincent Gap parking area at 6585’ (mile marker 74.80)\, we will hike along an easy 400’ gain in elevation over 2 miles to The Big Horn Mine\, which we can explore for awhile. From there the route to the top of Mt. Baden Powell along its eastern backbone is the most challenging and by far most avoided\, in fact\, it’s not even listed in The Sierra Club’s routes to the top. This no nonsense kick in the @$$ cross country route will require a person with legs of steel and fearless of heights. This steep backbone at times resembles a knives edge with steep drop offs into the huge bowl of Mine Gulch\, and it makes the backbones of Mt. Baldy look meek in comparison. Once at the top\, we will break for a well deserved lunch for at least an hour\, savoring over our accomplishment. From here we will descend yet another off trail ridge back to Hwy. 2. This event is accomplished by way of a short 2 mile car shuttle. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS AND TIME: From the 210 Fwy\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy and drive north about a quarter mile to just past Milmada Dr. in LA CANADA\, then park alongside the road. We will all meet here no later than 7:00 a.m. and car shuttle up Angeles Crest Hwy. 2 to (mile marker 73.00). From there we will shuttle over to Vincent Gap parking area (mile marker 74.80) to begin our trek. An Adventure Pass will be needed to park on Hwy. 2 at Vincent Gap. \nDURATION: This will be an all day event\, so if you have to be back at a certain time\, then please don’t sign up. \nTERRAIN: A very very steep ridge which will make Register Ridge seem easy. \nDISTANCE: 5.5 extremely challenging miles at times \nELEVATION RANGE: From 6585′ to 9399′ with an overall gain of 3000′. \nTHE PACE: 2 MPH moving pace on the 2+ miles of trails and what ever pace it takes on the ridges with several breaks along the way. \nLEVEL: Wednesday’s CDH core group and advanced intermediate Trekkers. \nSUGGESTIONS: Bring lots of water\, since this will be a very demanding trek up the ridge. Having trekking poles and micro spikes will help. It’ll be cold\, bring gloves and layered clothing.

SUMMARY:Bell Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:My Bell Canyon Loop starts and ends at the mouth of Bell Canyon. Its a little-known loop and I haven’t seen any other meetup group do it — so you are in luck today! \n👉 Hike is about 4 miles with 900′ total ascent. Most of that is during a one-mile stretch\, thus I am rating this hike as DIFFICULT due to terrain. See my hike rating guide here: https://www.meetuphikes.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDIRECTIONS:\nHead toward the address given above but instead of turning on Woodglade Ln\, just park on Highlander Rd. We meet near the corner of Highlander Rd and Woodglade Ln. by the ball field \n✔The Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER (see https://www.meetuphikes.com/liability-waiver) and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.
