SUMMARY:Palo Comado Lollipop - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis route takes us through a beautiful canyon via a counter-clockwise lollipop. Most of the hike has a clear view of the sky\, with a few parts that have tree cover. We’ll be stopping at the half-way point for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nWe’ll start at the Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead (coordinates: 34.182480\,-118.751785) and head east for 1/2 mile along the Doubletree Connector Trail. We’ll turn left and head north along the Palo Comado for about 1 mile. We’ll turn right (east) onto the Dead Cow Trail for 0.8 miles\, where we’ll come to an overlook on the left. \nThere\, we’ll stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). Then we’ll continue down the Sheep Corral trail for about 700′\, turning left back onto the Palo Comado trail. From there\, we’ll head south 1.75 miles and turn right (west) onto the Doubletree Connector Trail and the final 1/2 mile back to the trailhead. \nHikeDistance: 4.6 milesGain: 900′Distribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road and single track. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.Trail Variations:Several extended inclines of 1000 steps.Several steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes. Leashed\, as required by law.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/bootsFlashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snack and Beverage Share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack SageMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nYellow Star ThistleThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing. Permanent brain damage is possible\, and affected horses may starve to death. Used in Turkish folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers. In a laboratory study\, aqueous extracts of fresh or dried flowers of yellow star thistle given orally showed significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats. \nDirections (Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead): \nFrom I-101:I-101\, exit Kanan Rd.Kanan Rd. north for 2 miles.Right (east) on Sunnycrest Dr. for 0.6 miles.Continue on Doubletree Rd. for 0.l miles.Trailhead on the right\, park along the street. \nFrom CA-118\, CA-23:I-118 west.I-23 south for 4.8 miles\, exit Avenida de Los Arboles.Left (east) on Avenida del Los Arboles for 1.6 miles.Right (south) on N. SUMMARY:Top Of Topanga Loop
DESCRIPTION:The hike is waitlisted. Put yourself on the list and I will add you if I feel you can complete the hike at my pace safely (Timber Mt hikers\, not at that pace 🙂 ) \nDistance: 9Elevation Gain: 2100Rating: Intermediate/Advanced 7-10 \nTrail: Fire road\, single track\, class 1\,2 rock climbs and some street crossings. \nThe HikeExcellent variety\, views and exercise along this eight mile loop hike with an elevation gain of 2\,400′. The trail climbs and follows a ridge line through interesting rock formations to one of the best observation points in the Santa Monica Mountains; The Topanga Lookout. Topanga Lookout\, the former site of a fire tower\, stands above Red Rock Canyon Park and offers fine views of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Calabasas\, and the Santa Susana Mountains. \nAfter taking in the view and enjoying a break/early lunch\, we’ll follow the trail down to the shaded valley below and return to the parking area. \nDirections \nFrom the 405/101 Freeway… Exit Mulholland Dr /Valley Circle Blvd and go south on Mulholland Dr for 0.5 mi Turn Right on Valmar St for 1.2 mi Turn Right on Mulholland Hwy for 3.8 mi Left on Stunt Rd for 1.0 mi Park at turnout on Right \n********************************The Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Angel Vista Full Moon potluck hike
DESCRIPTION:Happy Full Moon! Let’s enjoy hike and potluck! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \n \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have our typical snack-share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \n \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 take the Ventu Park exit (3 miles north/west of the 23) and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so please keep the noise down. \nWe will meet not quite at the end of the road. We’ll cross a gate along the side of the street and across from the houses\, then move 100 yards to the right and enter the trail. \nHike Distance: 3.0 milesGain: 800′Distribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Double track\, single track.Duration: 4 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:This short hike offers a nice variety of canyon and ocean scenery\, and is not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. \nWe’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \n \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. \n \nAfter crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, you can enjoy excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Creek. For the rock scramblers there are caves and crevices to explore (while us chickens watch from the picnic bench). \n \n \nHike will be about 3 miles with 550 ft total ascent. Hike is rated as EASY. See the hike rating guide at https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nIt’s short\, but offers a nice variety of canyon and ocean scenery\, and is not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains. \nDirections \nFrom Highway 101: drive south on Topanga Canyon Blvd for 3.7 miles. Turn left on Viewridge and drive 0.5 miles to the end of the road. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway: head north on Topanga Canyon Blvd. for 9 miles and turn right on Viewridge. \nPark by end of street. There is plenty of street parking \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Las Llajas - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 700′ gain\, Beginner. \nThis hike is a great trail for beginners because all the elevation gain is distributed. It is a walk down a rolling fire road through a really cool canyon\, and you will find no difficult or extended elevation climbs. \nThis is one of my favorite trails for people new to hiking. It is an “out-and-back” hike\, where we return the way we came\, so there is virtually no chance of getting lost. You may be amazed that such a place exists right here in Simi Valley. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll walk down an asphalt path for several hundred steps and turn right onto a gravel fire road. After that\, there will be no more turns. But shortly\, we’ll take a detour up a trail off to the right to see the first bee sactuary. it was filled with live bees last time I looked in May 2017. Then we’ll return back to the fire road. \nWe’ll continue on the fire-road for about 1 mile. We’ll stop there (in the shade if summer) to allow others to catch up. \nThen we’ll take a 200′ detour to the left to see the second bee sanctuary\, which continues in a half circle back to the fire road. Even though I haven’t seen any actual bees there\, it’s still interesting to see. \nWe’ll continue for another 1.5 miles and wait there for anybody that needs to catch up\, and share snacks and/or beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nThere is a lot of wild life along this trail because it is the only area with water for quite a distance. \nThis is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. See link How Hard is This Hike (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). Still\, for those that aren’t interested in the beverage and/or snack share and want more of a workout\, just continue on for another mile (15-20 minutes) at a fast pace\, then turn around and come back. That’s about how long we’ll be before packing up and heading back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes: \nTree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca) \nElongated yellow flowers. The Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. \nIt does not contain nicotine. It contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. \nUsed as an insecticide. Do not smoke it. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 5 milesGain: 700′Distribution: Well distributed.Difficulty: Beginner.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road.Trail Variations: Rolling stroll.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: \n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. This hike does not have any junctions once past the first 500′. \nSince this hike is out-and-back on a wide fire road with no turns after the first 500′\, one cannot get lost. Therefore\, for this hike\, it will be acceptable to split from the group moving faster\, slower\, or otherwise at your own pace. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections: \nLas Llajas Canyon Trail5715 Evening Sky DrSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \nFrom the west: 23-N to 118-E\, Exit 29 Yosemite. From the east: 118-W\, Exit 29 Yosemite.Head north on Yosemite for 1.25 miles. SUMMARY:JACKSON LAKE LOOP - A 9.5 MILE 2000' GAIN FALL COLORS HIKE
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Lake Trail is a high-quality single track snaking through the woods on the northern slope of the San Gabriel Mountains. Some of the most beautiful forest in the range can be seen along the trail\, including huge ponderosa pine\, jeffrey pine\, white fir\, live oak\, black oak\, big-leaf maple\, alder\, and willow. The black oak and big-leaf maple turn brilliant reds and yellows in the fall\, providing a photographers’ feast that includes tremendous views across the southwestern Mojave Desert.West Blue Ridge provides stunning views down the East Fork San Gabriel River and across to 10\,064′ Mount Baldy. \nDrivers parking at Jackson Lake will need an ADVENTURE PASS. \nIf you have some place to be later in the day\, this event will not work for you. \nWe will be setting a slow pace with several breaks while staying together all the way so as not to lose anyone. \nCHECK OUT THE PHOTOS POSTED FROM THAT HIKE THERE IN 2014:https://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/25092192/419820502/ \nDAY’S AGENDA \nSTART: Once we all arrive at Jackson Lake around 9:00 a.m.\, we’ll begin our trek along the Jackson Lake Trail to link up with the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail). \nPCT: The PACIFIC CREST TRAIL is probably the most well known of all the trails on the west coast. We’ll be hiking a small portion of this trail along THE RIDGE. \nTHE RIDGE: BLUE RIDGE (around 7500′) offers awesome views into the depths of the east fork of the San Gabriel River and high mountain country as we make our way to THE TRAIL. \nTHE TRAIL: This is an unnamed trail that drops us down to THE RIFT. \nTHE RIFT: The RIFT is part of the San Andreas Fault where one can see the tectonic boundary of the right-lateral strike-slip between the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate. It’s here where we’ll then hike along the CEDAR CANYON TRAIL. \nCEDAR CANYON TRAIL: This canyon is loaded with Cedar trees and it eventually will take us back to Jackson Lake. \nOPTIONAL LATE LUNCH: Mexico Lindo & Seafood Restaurant at 1253 Evergreen Rd\, Wrightwoodhttp://www.mexicolindos.com/ \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Jackson Lake parking lot at 9:00 am.https://www.google.com/maps/place/Jackson+Lake+Picnic+Site/@34.3927461\,-117.7317241\,796m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x80c31750467353b3:0x50e8f56da7cba3f!8m2!3d34.3920042!4d-117.7274162 \nEARLIER MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Those out my way can meet me in Woodland Hills at 7:00 a.m. and take off from there in a car pool. SUMMARY:STORMING THE CASTLE via the CAVE OF MUNITS and then a frontal assault
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.NEED HELP:go to: https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC \nCASTLE PEAKJoin me on a task to storm the castle (Castle Peak) via two attempts in El Escorpion Park. The first assault will be a maneuver on its west flank via a cavern passage (Cave of Munits). This will require some class 3 rock climbing (using your hands to assist) as you can see from the photo above of (http://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/1871301/31389991/) one of our past attempts. When this attempt fails\, we’ll regroup below and go for a frontal attack on the castle itself. One of the obstacles on this course will be a hive of bees in the castles ramparts. By way of a traverse maneuver we’ll overcome this and overtake Castle Peak. Having conquered the castle\, we’ll break to enjoy the views our conquest has to offer. \nAccording to Chumash oral tradition\, this cave was the home of a very powerful shaman who met his demise after murdering the son of a tribal chief. \nMEETUP TIME: No later than 9:00 a.m. (Boots on\, ready to go) \nLOCATION: Near El Escorpion Park in West Hills on Highlander Rd. (SEE MAP FOR EXACT MEETUP LOCATION) \nELEVATION GAIN: 1200’+ \nDISTANCE: 6 miles \nDURATION: 3+ hours \nPACE: 2.5 mph on the trails and much slower on the climbs \nLEVEL: Intermediate hiker looking to challenge themselves \nMY CELL # IS 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:Baldy from the Village Out and Back
DESCRIPTION:Advanced Hikers Only\, with Previous Summit Experience! \nWe’ll be taking the Bear Canyon Trail that starts in Baldy Village and hiking to the summit and returning the same way. \nBe careful where you park! Do not park in the lot across from the Baldy Lodge & Saloon. You must find a place on the street that is not restricted. \nDistance: 12 miles \nElevation Gain: 6\,000ft \nElevation at the Summit: 10\,064ft. \nTotal Duration: 7-9.5 hours depending on your hiking speed. \nRating: 9/10 Strenuous \nTrail: Unmaintained trail but well traveled. \nESSENTIALS: \n2 Liters of water (Minimum) \nSunscreen \nHat \nSnacks & Lunch \nHiking Poles (Recommended) \nLayered clothing (can be windy & chilly at the summit) \nTHE PLAN: \nThis is the original trail to the Mt. Baldy summit that was first used in the late 1880’s and 1890’s. At that time travelers would be brought by horseback to a stone lodge at the summit via this route for overnight alpine getaways. Today\, this is considered a must do training hike for Mt. Whitney and other high peaks in the Sierra’s (no\, not for the horses… ) Why? In six miles you will ascend 6\,000ft\, which places this grade definitely in the ‘aggressive’ category. \nThe trail begins about 100 yards south of the NFS Baldy Visitor Center and behind the church. We will assemble in the church parking lot in view of Mt. Baldy road. \nTo reach the trail head we proceed up a road for about 1/2 mile passing by some extraordinary private homes nestled in this beautiful canyon with a year long stream. Its easy to see why this road was the first to be settled in Baldy area. Once we leave the cabins behind the real hike begins. \nFour Part Hike: \nPart 1 is the relatively easy to moderate initial climb out of the village. The first half of this section is shaded with oak and your typical Southern California vegetation as it follows the creek canyon. This section ends (mentally anyway) when you reach the lush open area of the Bear Flat camp site. Note: There is no water past this point. \nPart 2 is basically switch-backing up a steep east\, south-east mountain slope. The switchbacks are quite numerous\, and your goal should be to ascend this section before the morning sun gets to work as the trail is totally exposed here. It’s not a particularly pleasant hike at this point. \nPart 3 begins as you top the east facing slope and start working up the ridge-line that will take you much of the way towards the summit and into the alpine forest zone. The grade is steep here\, and as you progress\, quick rest stops are perfectly OK to let your leg muscles stop screaming. The views on this section are actually quite stunning\, with vistas of all the surrounding San Gabriel ranges. You will pass through two or three mountain saddles with relatively level ground and some shaded areas on the way\, but frankly\, its up and up and up for most of this hike. \nSection 4 takes you to the summit and here you will transition out of the alpine zone and into a mixed alpine high-altitude environment with lots of ground-up decomposing granite. You will cross a razor back ridge that presents no problems in the summer time and proceed on up to the final push to the summit. Don’t be fooled by what seems like your first glimpse of the summit\, you are actually viewing West Baldy. As you approach\, you will actually be traversing along the slope of West Baldy before beginning the final push to the Mt. Baldy Summit. Keep a sharp eye out for the trail marker and bear right to reach Mt. Baldy proper. You will soon see piles of stones built as wind shelters in the distance as you look towards the summit. That’s where you’re headed and you’ll be there in no time! \n* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Talopop - Suitable for fit beginners
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 4.1 miles\, 720′ gain. \nIs it Talepop or Talopop? Maps and signs that I have seen\, use the 2nd spelling\, but a lot of references use the other. \nThere are several portions with extended inclines that will make a beginner hiker stop for a breather. \nThere is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. A couple of the inclines\, while not extreme\, continue for about 1000 steps\, and there are also several hills that are about 100 steps each. We won’t be hiking this trail at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nWe’ll meet in front of the facilities building at the center of the park. This is a lollipop hike. \nSome of the hike is fire road\, and a lot of the hike is single-track. Some has complete exposure to the sun\, and some is through shaded wooded areas. \nWe’ll head behind the facilities building in the center and head left down the Las Virgenes Trail. After 1/3 mile\, the trail turns 90 degrees\, we continue on the easier route for 1/10th mile instead of taking the trail that climbs the hill. After we cross the dry creek bed where a bridge used to be\, we turn right and it becomes the Talopop Trail. \nWe’ll follow it around for another 1.8 miles until it dead ends at a fire road\, Liberty Canyon Trail. There\, we’ll wait for others to catch up\, and we can share some beverages and/or snacks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) before continuing. \nWe’ll turn left and after 1/3 mile\, the trail dead ends again at Las Virgenes Fire Road. We’ll turn left again and travel 1.1 miles where we’ll hit another junction\, turning right back onto Las Virgenes Trail for the final 0.4 mile return\, making a left at the split right behind the facilities building. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. \nCalifornia Sagebrush – Artemesia Californica \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nAn infusion can be made for an insect repellent. \nDirections: \nTalopopJuan Bautista de Anza Park3701 Lost Hills RoadCalabasas\, CA 91301 \nFrom the 118 \nWest to CA-23 southCA-23 south for 7.4 milesUS-101 east for 9.5 milesExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.Lost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 milesPark on the right. \nFrom the 101 \nExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.Lost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 milesPark on the right. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 4.1 miles\, 3.5 hours\, counter-clockwiseElevation Gain: 720′Distribution: Reasonably well distributed\, some of the gain on the return portion.Shape: LollipopDifficulty: Easy-IntermediatePace: 2.0 mphDuration: 3.5 hoursDogs: NoRestrooms: Yes\, at the start.Drinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start.Parking: Free in the paved lot\, or along the street..Trail: Fire Road and single track\, good condition. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. \nThe description includes a picture of the route. SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, gain: 500′\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. The hike starts at the trail head near the Tampa exit on I-118\, just 3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop (from the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. We’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. We’ll continue for about 2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, and then travel about 20 yards west and taking a different trail back into the Canyon. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll return to the original trail for the return. Soon\, we’ll take a slightly different route by making a right off the trail\, but it still returns back to the original trail after a short distance. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 years\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event (snack and beverage share – https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the right and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings on the return\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. In general\, it won’t matter if you choose incorrectly from this point because all the splits end up going the same way. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat \nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac \nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \nDirections: \nLimekiln Canyon TrailPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \nFrom the 118 \nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.Left (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.Trailhead on the right (north).Park on either side of the street. \nFrom the 101 @ CA23 \nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 milesEast I-118 for 18 miles.Exit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.Left (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.Trailhead on the right (north).Park on either side of the street. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 4 milesElevation Gain: 500′Difficulty: EasyPace: 2.5 mphDogs: YesRestrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: NoParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.Trail: Varied. SUMMARY:Los Padres - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 600′ gain\, Easy Intermediate. \nA fit beginner can handle this. Because there are a couple extended inclines\, I’ve rated this at the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. That’s OK\, because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll stop at various points to let people catch up. \nWe’ll start by entering the Los Padres trail\, through a spooky oak covered section\, then move through until we come to a dead end. We’ll turn right\, and continue climbing up. We’ll come to another junction\, where we’ll turn right onto the Los Robles trail. \nAfter 500 feet\, we’ll come to a split off to the right. We’ll take this split and continue along the Vista Loop until we come to a bench. Then we’ll start heading down\, and when we come to the “Giants Picnic Table”\, which I call that because its parts are super thick. \nWe’ll stop for a social event and share snacks and drinks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes\, before continuing down and around for our return. \nIf you don’t wish to stay for the entire social event\, please study the map posted as a photo with this description so you are able to navigate the remainder of this trail without the host \nHike Distance: 3.5 milesGain: 600′Distribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Loop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.Trail Variations:Several extended inclines of 1000 steps.Several steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.Duration: 3.0 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/bootsFlashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nThese are a couple plants you are likely to see on this hike: \nYucca \nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo or soap. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. \nPronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. Adam says they taste like radishes. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, or\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or\, scrape off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. Weave into cordage. \nWild Cucumber \nToxic. Boil fruit in water to make spikes easy to remove. Inside is a natural luffa. SUMMARY:Mt. Wilson from Sierra Madre (Eats at the Cosmic Cafe on the Summit!)
DESCRIPTION:The Stats \nDistance: 14 miles Up and back Elevation Gain/Loss: 4800 ft. \nRating: Moderate to Strenuous 8/10 \nTrail: Single track\, some fire road at the end. Upper 2/3 of the trail is shaded. \nDuration: roughly 8 or 9 hours \nWe will stop for lunch at the Cosmic Cafe Pavilion (outdoor seating only) at the summit. Eat theirs or bring your own! \nhttp://www.mtwilson.edu/cafe.php \nTrail Description \nThe Mt. Wilson Trail is a former Gabrielino Indian trail that snaked through breath-taking Little Santa Anita Canyon to the top of Mt. Wilson. White settlers in the area used the trail in the mid to late 19th century for access to the harvesting of pine and spruce higher on the slope of the canyon. Those were the days when California grizzlies were common in the San Gabriels. \nThis trail is the site of an annual 8.6 mile race from the downtown plaza of Sierra Madre to Orchard Camp and back. This race was first run in 1908 all the way to Mt. Wilson. Its modern incarnation\, begun in 1967\, is of course much shorter. \nApart from a route from Chantry Flat through Big Santa Anita Canyon \, the Mt. Wilson Trail is the most popular route to the top of Mt. Wilson. \nThe trailhead is at 970 feet elevation. \nThe Mt. Wilson Trail ascends the western slope of Little Santa Anita Canyon. Be advised that this trail is one of the steeper ones in the San Gabriel mountains. About ½ mile from the start\, you will come to a noticeable point where the trail crosses a ridge. The ridge on your right side runs down to the creek. \nAt 1.2 miles\, you will reach First Water Junction\, where you go left up the trail. \nAt about 2.75 miles from the start\, you will reach Decker Springs where you will quickly drop into the creek and just as quickly ascend. From here\, it is about 1/3 of a mile to Orchard Camp\, a nice shady rest spot if you’re so inclined. \nFrom Orchard\, it is 1.9 miles to Manzanita Ridge where you will connect with the Winter Creek Trail coming from Chantry Flat. Go left (northwest) and continue to a major junction where the trail meets the Mt. Wilson Toll Road coming up from Altadena through Eaton Canyon. Here\, the southeast ridge of Mt. Harvard meets the road and Mt. Harvard is to your left. \nAt the trail/toll road junction\, turn right and proceed up the toll road. When you come to a structure (known as Martin’s Cabin) on the left side of the road\, look immediately to your right and you will encounter the resumption of the Mt. Wilson Trail. This point is about a mile distance from the Manzanita Ridge. Proceed up the trail\, now single track again\, .75 miles to the parking lot summit of Mt. Wilson. \nNo permits are needed for hiking this trail to Mt. Wilson. Neither is an Adventure Pass required to park at the trailhead because it is not located within the Angeles National Forest. \nDirectionsThe Mt. Wilson Trail trailhead is located within the city limits of Sierra Madre. From the 210 Freeway\, exit Baldwin Ave. and go north. When you come to a traffic light where you have to go either right or left\, go left to the next light and that is Baldwin Ave. Take a right and continue up Baldwin Ave. through the downtown area of Sierra Madre. Approximately ¾’s of a mile from the downtown plaza\, take a right on Mira Monte. Go down about ½ mile and you will come to a small park on your left. Park anywhere in this area long Mira Monte. (Note: it seems that Sierra Madre police are serious about curbing your vehicle’s wheels). To get to the trail\, walk up the paved road that heads north off of Mira Monte next to the park. About ¼ of a mile up the paved road\, you will come to the signed start of the trail. SUMMARY:Rocky Peak to Tapo Canyon Preserve
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/tapo-canyon-trail-to-rocky-peak-trail \nHello fellow hikers\,I have been talking about this one for awhile so here we go…this will be a point to point hike I have attached the AllTrails link as this will be our meeting spot and we will be doing this hike..but.. we are gonna carpool to Rocky Peak and start it from the reverse direction so will end up at Tapo Canyon. I have done this hike the full length and it is AWESOME it has everything (except rock scrambling or off trail) you will get amazing views with your stretches of climbs up to your stretches of level off sections. All the trails separate would be rated moderate but put together you have a harder rated trail. Anyone is welcome to do any part of the sections if you want to turn back but please note we are continuing on. You can either bring a friend to drive separately or/and we can all take several cars (depending upon how many attend) out of respect we will wear mask in the car but not required on the trail. This will be a good heart up and pumping workout but not a killer more of a great feeling you did it… 🙂 I attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/tapo-canyon-trail-to-rocky-peak-trail \nTrail point to pointMiles 14.7Elevation Gain 3021 ftRated hardDogs allowed BUT must be conditioned for a longer harder hike \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:1) Hike your own hike2) Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (a lot of water on this one) \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guess
