SUMMARY:Inspiration Pt. & Muir peak
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO \nSince we are living in the age of Covid\, I am limiting this event to a max of 10 people due to social distancing. \nTHESE ARE THE RULES:1. ONLY people I have been hiking with will be moved to the going list.2. You must follow all safety guidelines regarding Covid. This means 6-ft social distancing\, and wearing a mask.3. We hike as a group and will not leave anyone behind.4. Do not attend this hike if you have other plans. \nA beautiful hike on April Fool’s Day that is definitely no joke! We will begin our trek at Eaton Saddle trailhead\, walking along the Mt. Lowe Road and re-group at Markham Saddle. Then continue on the road above Bear canyon to Tom Sloan Saddle and take a short break at the junction. Our journey will continue with a gradual ascent on the TSS. On this trail we can appreciate the beautiful restoration made possible by Restoration Legacy Crew in 2018. We’ll take a connector trail and pass through some historic ruins including the Alpine Tavern. After checking out the sites contine our trek to Inspiration Point and Muir Pk. After summit pics\, we will retrace our steps to IP for a lunch break under the nice shaded veranda. On a clear day Catalina Island can be seen. The return back to our cars will be a gradual incline on a fire road. \nLast time I was here\, there were small patches of poison oak along the Bear canyon trail but can easily be avoided since it is not directly on the trail. \nStats:Level- Strong Intermediate/NO BEGINNERSDistance- 10 milesGain- 1500′ (approximate)Terrain- rocky fire road\, single track trailsRestrooms- not available at trailheadDogs- NOT ALLOWED ON THIS HIKEParking- dirt road at the trailheadA National Forest Pass is required. \nWHAT TO BRING: A POSITIVE ATTITUDE.Lunch/snacks\, at least 3 liters of water\, Lug soles with good tread\, poles if you like/have them. SUMMARY:Iron Mountain (strenuous)
DESCRIPTION:So all you have been doing for months is getting outdoors and hiking & running. Let’s do Big Iron! \nThe Numbers:Distance: 14 miElevation Gain: 7200 ft\, it’s a doozy!Rating: 9/10Trail: Wear long pantsParking: Bridge to Nowhere trailhead and adventure Pass is required.Park at 6am for 6:10 departureGroup Size: 10-15. A bit depends on future covid guidelines. \nBe responsible in assessing your readiness for this hike \n-I have never done this trail\, so bear with me when I pause to check the route.-There is no water on the trail. Bring everything you need and extra. I will cache water-Most of the route is extremely exposed to the sun.-Bring first lunch & second lunch and snacks; it’s a long day.-Rain and heat wave cancels; perhaps Apr 17 as backup date.-Contact me privately if you want to share an emergency contact.-I plan to have a Garmin InReach \nCovid Rules – We will likely know more about the relevant rules as we get closer. I’m hoping the diligence and vaccine rollout will mean a fun time together. I’m not doing Big Iron my first time as a hike-your-own-hike and will cancel if the rules are that restrictive.

SUMMARY:Sycamore Canyon - Serrano Valley Loop
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Scroll down to rsvp[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nThis is a loop hike. From the Sycamore Campground parking lot we’ll hike up Big Sycamore Canyon for about a mile and then head east on the Serrano Canyon trail into a densely wooded narrow canyon\, with a lovely seasonal stream crisscrossing the trail numerous times\, and abundant wildlife. As we begin to gain elevation and the trail starts turning north a stunning vista of rolling grasslands set against the steep outlines of Boney Ridge begins to emerge. This is Serrano Valley \nWe’ll explore the Serrano Family Home Site. This was a large ranch back in the day. The area is strewn with old farm equipment\, water pumps\, home items\, and other artifacts. Trails may be a little overgrown in this area \nWe were there in 8/2013 just after the Springs fire. We saw a veritable bonanza of artifacts including home appliances\, tools\, etc. Check out the pictures here. Before the fire\, and probably now\, the only artifacts visible we’ll see are those that rise above the tall grass\, or ones we trip over. Check out the pics from that day: \nWe’ll crisscross many of the old ranch roads and trails there. We’ll return to Sycamore Canyon via the Old Boney Trail. Its a little boring hiking back to PCH down Sycamore so perhaps we’ll take some side trails along the way — depending how tired we are \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS APPX 9 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,500 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections:\nTake PCH to Sycamore Canyon Rd. Turn in and go to Kiosk. Pay\, park or hang out. We’ll be meeting in day use lot. \nSycamore Canyon Rd is 19 miles north/west of Malibu Canyon Rd. Its 5.9 miles south/east of Las Posas (you will pass by La Jolla Canyon). \nThere is a parking fee\, credit cards ok. There is additional pay parking at Thornhill Broom Beach – from there walk under PCH to meetup spot.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:WESTLAKE VISTA PEAK + optional lunch at The Stonehaus
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nWESTLAKE VISTA PEAK (2445′) – One of the loneliest peaks in The Santa Monica Mountains \nTired of mundane hikes\, then join me on one of my favorite local treks as we make our way up to one of the loneliest peaks in the Santa Monica Mountains. You’ll see why it’s seldom bagged when you take on this little beast. We’ll follow a “use trail” from Hwy. 23 which is extremely steep and requires a bit of class 3 rock scrambling as well. \nThis little monster is for those who don’t scare easily to the challenges it offers. The pay off will be at the top of Westlake Vista Peak where you’ll have a unique view of three lakes (Sherwood\, Westlake and Las Virgenes reservoirs) and the Pacific Ocean. This 3+ mile 900’ gain is nothing to scoff at. So\, if you feel that you have what it takes and have hiked on tough little hikes before\, sign up for this local monster if the site of blood doesn’t bother you\, because there may be some. \nMEET UP LOCATION: Exit the 101 FWY at Westlake Blvd in Thousand Oaks. Head south on Westlake Blvd. to Potrero Rd. Turn right and go about 400 yards to Camberwell Pl. Immediately turn right on Margate Pl. where we’ll all meet before car shuttling to the trailhead. \nTIME: No later than 9:00 a.m. \nDURATION AND OBJECTIVE: What ever it takes to accomplish THE TASK (Time\, Energy\, Fear\, Pain\, Blood\, sweat\, tears\, etc.). \nTHE PEAK: Standing guard over Westlake Village at 2445′\, this unnamed peak which I’ll dub as “Westlake Vista Peak\, beckons to be conquered again. \nDISTANCE COVERED: One of the toughest 3+ mile treks around The Westlake Village area. Guaranteed to feel like you’ve done well over 7 miles when you’re done. \nPACE: We’ll travel as fast as the slowest trekker. But\, we do have to stay together\, since it’s very easy to loose the group and the “use” trails. \nELEVATION GAIN: 900′ + \nEXPERIENCE LEVEL: Strong Intermediate hiker with class 3 steep scrambling skills and bushwhacking experience that has hiked on tough hikes before. \nMY CELL# is 805-358-5972 \nOPTIONAL LUNCH (Debriefing): The Stonehaus (32039 Agoura Rd\, Westlake Village)https://the-stonehaus.com/lunch-and-dinner/

SUMMARY:Manzanita Ridge via the Mt. Wilson Trail
DESCRIPTION:Distance: 10.2 miElevation gain: 3\,700′Route type: Out & backWell-trafficked\, single track trail with some steep drop-offsNOT FOR BEGINNERS \nThis is a moderate hike with a nice and steady incline. The first (and last) mile is fully exposed\, but beyond that you will be surrounded by a lush and beautiful forest. \nThe Mount Wilson Trail was built in 1864 by Benjamin “Don Benito” Wilson. He had planned to use it to bring down timber for his ranch. Not much timber was cut\, and the trail was repurposed to construct the first Mt. Wilson Observatory\, established by Harvard College in 1889. \nThe trailhead for the Mt. Wilson Trail can be found right next to the historic Lizzie’s Trail Inn. From 1906 to 1950\, the The Pacific Electric railway brought thousands of aspiring Mt. Wilson hikers to Sierra Madre. In 1890\, a lunch stand was created at the base of the Mt. Wilson Trail to serve the hikers heading up and down the trail. From 1925 to 1935\, the stand was operated by Lizzie McElwain\, and this is when Lizzie’s Trail Inn became famous. A menu of fried chicken\, ravioli\, and distilled spirits (in the age of prohibition) was a hit. The business closed in 1948\, and is now preserved as a museum for the public good. \nTrail Description: \nFrom the intersection of Mira Monte Avenue and Mt. Wilson Trail Drive\, walk up the drive about 150 yards to the beginning of the marked trail on the left. Follow the trail briefly up to a ridge top road where you’re greeted by another trail sign. Veer to your left and follow the road to the main trail as it begins to climb\, high on the western slope of Little Santa Anita Canyon. \nAt the 1.5 mile mark you reach the trail junction with First Water — so named because it’s the first place where you can get water. There is a junction here that leads down a short spur trail to the creek\, where there is in fact water running most of the time. \nThe trail continues to climb up Little Santa Anita Canyon and at 3.5 miles you reach Orchard Camp. This is roughly the halfway point up to the summit of Mt. Wilson\, earning it the nickname of the Halfway House. \nAt one time there were a number of cabins and buildings at Orchard Camp to support the construction of the Mt. Wilson Observatory. Today all that remains are some concrete steps and fragments of the foundations. It’s a good place to take a snack break and catch your breath. \nContinuing on past Orchard Camp\, there is another steep ascent to reach Manzanita Ridge and The Bench. This is the 5.1 mile mark and our turnaround point. From this junction it’s another 2.4 miles to the summit of Mt. Wilson. This is also the point that the Mt. Wilson Trail meets up with the Gabrielino Trail (The Mt. Wilson route from Chantry Flat). \nThe views here are fantastic. On a clear day you can easily see the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island many miles away. \nTrail Stats – approximate \nFirst Water 1.5 miles 1\,950′ elevationOrchard Camp 3.5 miles 2\,960′ elevationManzanita Ridge 5.1 miles 4\,470′ elevation \nGetting to the Trailhead: \nFrom I-210\, take the Baldwin Ave. exit\, head north for 1.5 miles (through downtown) and turn right on Mira Monte. The park will be on the left in 0.2 mile. Park where available. \nAnd\, if you want more information on the history of the Mount Wilson Trail\, check out this website\, http://www.dankat.com/mstory/trail.htm \nThis hike is not for beginners and you must be comfortable hiking alone at certain places along the trail. Wearing a mask when passing within 6 ft of another hiker is expected of all hikers. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Hike to Bridge to Nowhere
DESCRIPTION:This is one of the must-do hikes in Los Angeles: a moderate\, 9 miles (round trip) hike to one of the most interesting places of the San Gabriel Mountains. Bridge do Nowhere is a bridge located literally in the middle of nowhere in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness. The bridge was built in 1936\, when they were building a road connecting the San Gabriel Valley and Wrightwood. However\, a massive flood in 1938 due to extremely heavy rain\, destroyed the road-in-construction\, so they decided to abandon the project\, leaving a perfectly finished bridge lost in the middle of nowhere. Now a company called Bungee America owns the land and does bungee jumping off the 100 foot bridge. \nA group of us is actually bungee jumping that day\, so this will be an even more exciting hike because we will get to see people bungee jump. It will be an all-around amazing experience: we will do a super fun hike to an amazing\, surreal location\, see a historical landmark of Los Angeles\, and to top it off\, get to see people bungee jumping! \nBy the way\, if you would like to sign up for bungee jumping\, go here: https://www.meetup.com/sober-treks/events/277116906 \nOne of the coolest things about this hike is that we will be doing A LOT of water crossings\, so expect to get wet. Also\, there are a lot of places we can actually swim\, which makes the day even more fun! We will be hiking for 4.5 miles\, 1\,000 feet elevation. It’s a moderate hike\, so you have to be in OK shape to do it. Like I said\, we’ll be crossing streams several times\, so your shoes will get wet (really wet)\, so make sure you wear shoes that can get wet. NO FLIP FLOPS OR SANDALS. It’s a rocky terrain\, so you need real shoes with ankle support and good tread . Running shoes or hiking shoes will be fine\, so long as you are OK with them getting soaked. \nWe will be meeting at the trailhead at 7:00 AM. Leigh is hiking with the bungee group\, while Eduardo will lead the hiking-only group. The hike to the bridge should take about 2 hours. We are planning on staying out there until around 1:00 PM\, so we should be back at our cars by 3:00 PM or so. The hike back is pretty straightforward\, so those who want to head back before or after\, don’t have to be bound by our schedule. \nHighlights:Near: Azusa\, CADistance: 9 miles round tripElevation Gain: 1000 ft.Hike Time: Around 4.5 hours totalDifficulty: ModerateTrail Condition: OK\, but several water crossingsHike Type: Out and Back \nAll right\, let’s have some fun!! \nSee you all there. \n🙂 \nEduardo.

SUMMARY:Mount Gleason Trail!
DESCRIPTION:Okay all you backpackers and peak baggers this one’s for you. Hiking a little known trail called Mount Gleason. This is a loooong one (18 miles) But the elevation gain is only 3152 which makes this an excellent conditioning hike. Time to weigh down your gear if your looking to train for your backpack adventures or increase your endurance with a longer hike. Or just come along and enjoy a good hike and explore. We will be following the Alltrails map from the start of our hike to the top of Mount Gleason which is more of a fireroad. From there it looks like we may pass close to the old Nike Missile site. We will also pass a memorial for a fallen firefighter. On our way back down we will veer off the trail and connect to the Pacific Crest Trail which we will take all the way back to our cars. \nTrail Moderate but long distanceDogs are allowed but not recommendedTrail length 18 milesElevation gain 3152Out time is a estimateAdventure pass maybe required but this is my first time here so not sure(I would bring just incase) \nI’m gonna to provide the Alltrails link for you so you can check out info on the trails which includes stats directions and photos. Please remember to bring your face cover and all essentials needed for a long hike… \nThe Organizer\, Assistant Organizer and event host in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guess. \nAnd last the area roads will close after harsh weather due to heavy snow so unfortunately were weeks away from the event the weather can easily change. If so will have to reschedule…. \nAnd not to forget will always go by Jim’s two golden rules:1) Hike your own hike2) Stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nhttps://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mount-gleason-trail?u=i

SUMMARY:THE RAZORBACK'S BOWL PEAK - Easier cross country route
DESCRIPTION:The weather is much better up there now\, so I’ve set this trek up there again. \nBEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nLike others in our group\, I just can’t get enough of this area. (it’s so unique and isolated).PAST EVENT THERE via a much tougher routehttps://www.meetup.com/calabasasdayhikers/photos/30505729/486440049/#486456295Have you looked at our past events into the RAZORBACK ridge area of the Los Padres National Forest and wished you were able to enjoy this area but the events were for strong intermediate trekkers. Here’s a chance to gain the top of the RAZORBACK via its back door and look down into its bowl below (see picture of the bowl above). This route will be a much easier way to get there than what we have attempted in the past. Although this trek will be geared for our intermediate hikers that like an easier off trail hike\, our stronger hikers will enjoy this as well. Just remember that it will be at a slow intermediate pace. It’s a long day for a short trek but so worth it. \nI had our much stronger Friday hikers in mind when I created this easier excursion into The Los Padres National Forest. \nMICRO SPIKES will make trekking there so much easier\, especially if there’s still snow on the ground. \nIF YOU HAVE TO BE BACK BY A CERTAIN TIME\, PLEASE DON’T SIGN ON BECAUSE YOU MAY NOT MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENT. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: meet us at 8:30 am. at The Flying J Truck Stop (42810 Frazier Mountain Park\, Frazier Park)https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B049’01.0%22N+118%C2%B053’10.5%22W/@34.8169462\,-118.8873463\,18z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!1m6!3m5!1s0x80e9efbe677d9285:0xf025c089e1668cd8!2sFlying+J+Travel+Center!8m2!3d34.816763!4d-118.887325!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d34.8169435!4d-118.8862521After meeting here we will then caravan 25 minutes to the Razorback area to begin our adventure. \nDISTANCE: 4 miles of 100% cross country trekking along a sandy stream bed and easy but steep ridge lines.ELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 900’/900′ \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: I’d like to get back to the cars by 4:00 p.m. and stop off at Frazier Park for an optional debriefing in Frazier Park. \nTERRAIN: Trails? We don’t need no stinking trails to do this! We’ll first follow an old road a bit before following a sandy ravine to the base of a ridge leading us up to the backdoor ridge to the bowl. All this may be snow covered. \nLEVEL: Intermediate Trekker with off trail experience. \nSUGGESTIONS: We most likely will encounter packed snow along the way\, so bring trekking poles \nMY CELL# IS 805-358-5972 \nPOST HIKE DEBRIEFING: optional \nNO DOGS ALLOWED \nMake sure you wear a mask and practice CDC distancing guidelines.

SUMMARY:Top of Topanga-Loop
DESCRIPTION:*** YOU MUST BRING A FACE COVERING to meet up at the trailhead and to use on trail when it is not possible to avoid close proximity to other hikers. Please be mindful of other people’s space. DO NOT APPROACH ANYONE WITHOUT YOUR FACE COVERING. \n*** Hike is waitlisted. For the time being\, you must have hiked with us previously. Put yourself on the list and I will add you if I feel you can complete the hike at the group’s pace safely. Limiting the total number of attendees so please change your RSVP immediately if you cannot make it. Apologies for not being able to add everyone but safety is the main priority right now. Those we’ve been hiking with who demonstrate Covid precautions will be given priority. \n**************************Distance: 9 \nElevation Gain: 2100 \nRating: Intermediate/Advanced 7-10 \nNot for beginners\, no sweeper this time \nTrail: Fire road\, single track\, class 1\,2 rock climbs and some street crossings. \nThe Hike \nExcellent variety\, views and exercise along this nine mile loop hike with an elevation gain of 2\,400′. The trail climbs and follows a ridge line through interesting rock formations to one of the best observation points in the Santa Monica Mountains; The Topanga Lookout. Topanga Lookout\, the former site of a fire tower\, stands above Red Rock Canyon Park and offers fine views of the Santa Monica Mountains\, Calabasas\, and the Santa Susana Mountains. \nAfter taking in the view and enjoying a break/early lunch\, we’ll follow the trail down to the shaded valley below and return to the parking area.Directions \nFrom the 405/101 Freeway… Exit Mulholland Dr /Valley Circle Blvd and go south on Mulholland Dr for 0.5 mi Turn Right on Valmar St for 1.2 mi Turn Right on Mulholland Hwy for 3.8 mi Left on Stunt Rd for 1.0 mi Park at turnout on Right************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Tree of Life in the Verdugos
DESCRIPTION:*** YOU MUST BRING A FACE COVERING to meet up at the trailhead and to use on trail when it is not possible to avoid close proximity to other hikers. Please be mindful of other people’s space. DO NOT APPROACH ANYONE WITHOUT YOUR FACE COVERING. \n*** Hike is waitlisted. For the time being\, you must have hiked with us previously. Put yourself on the list and I will add you if I feel you can complete the hike at the group’s pace safely. Limiting the total number of attendees. Apologies for not being able to add everyone but safety is the main priority right now. \nThe trail starts out steep and doesn’t offer much of a break for the first mile or so. This is not a conditioning hike and we won’t be in a hurry to reach our destination (but NOT a beginner hike either). Bring warm layers since we will be stopping for breaks and to wait for the last hiker. Poles will be helpful. Bring a headlamp. \nTHE PLAN \nWe’ll take a VERY steep trail up to the Tree of Life\, make our way over to Verdugo Peak for a short snack break\, then head back down the fireroad. \nSTATS (est.) \nDistance: 6 miles-ish \nElevation Gain: <2000 ft. \nRating: 6/10\, NOT for beginners! \nTrail: Single Track\, Fire Break\, Fire Road – very\, very steep uphill sections. \nDirections: The La Tuna Trailhead is located just off the 210 fwy. Exit La Tuna Canyon Road and park across the street from Southland Nursery. Pay attention to parking signs. Meet at the forest gate. \nParking is free on La Tuna or in the dirt lot between the forest gate and the on-ramp to the 210. \n**************************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.

SUMMARY:Beartrap Bluff
DESCRIPTION:This may be the newest peak on the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter’s Hundred Peaks list added in January 2014 by the Hundred Peaks’ legendary exploratory couple: Peter and Ignacia Doggett. Relatively few have done this peak so far\, and guaranteed to be one of your favorite peaks/hikes. It is located above the southern edge of Lockwood Valley just below Reyes Peak in the Los Padres National Forest. \nThe first five miles will be trail; however\, to access the peak\, one has to traverse a large steep rock slab or through a dry gully that gains elevation quickly. There is a year-round stream (Beartrap Creek) at the bottom of the rock slab that we will have to cross. \nAfter we leave the gully and rock slab\, there is a poor use-trail with cross country hiking to get to the rock outcroppings that overlook the badlands of Lockwood Valley. One other highlight is that we will pass a giant\, unusual oak tree along the trail. \nDistance: 12 miles round trip. \nElevation Gain: 3\,800 feet total with 3.000 feet to the peak and 800 feet for the return. The peak’s elevation is 6\,150 feet. \nPace: 2 to 2.2 mph on the trail; much slower when going up and down the peak. \nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous depending on one’s conditioning. \nMinimum Level: Intermediate hiker. \nWhat to bring: Minimum 3 liters of water\, food for lunch and snacks\, and layers of clothes for changing temperatures and elevation. \nMeeting Time and Place: 7:15 am at the Flying J Travel Center at Frazier Mountain Park Road just off I-5 in Lebec. Park in the adjacent northeast section of Motel 6’s parking lot. There will still be a one hour drive to the trailhead\, which is at Reyes Creek Station off of Lockwood Valley Road. Adventure Pass or National Park Pass may be needed for vehicles parked at the trailhead. Please bring if you have one. \nEarlier Meeting Time and Place: 6 am at corner of Leonora St and Ponce Av in Woodland Hills. No host will be there\, so participants will have to arrange their carpooling. Please be willing to drive and have a full tank of fuel. Riders please be willing to share in the cost of the fuel. \nDirections to the Lebec Meeting Place from Woodland Hills: Take the US-101 East/South\, I-405 North\, and I-5 North all the way through the Santa Clarita Valley. Go up the grade and continue to Frazier Mountain Park Road (Exit 205). Make a left turn and go just past the freeway to Flying J Travel Center on the left side of the road. \nOptional dinner afterwards at the Mexican Restaurant in Lebec.

(optional: hiking poles and bug repellent) \nThis is a gentle though lengthy hike. I did this hike last May when the spring flowers were in full bloom and Grizzly Flats was absolutely lovely. Trail is partially shaded with some single track trail\, some overgrown fire road and some fully exposed fire road as you approach the summit. It is likely that poodle dog bush will be thriving as well as poison oak\, so be advised. Some people are highly allergic to these plants and there are places along the trail that are overgrown with vegetation and you may not be able to avoid contact. \nNOT FOR BEGINNERS due to distance. \nParking: on the North side of Angeles Crest Highway at a small unmarked turnout near mile marker 30.60. SUMMARY:Fish Canyon Narrows to Rogers Camp
DESCRIPTION:COVID precautions still apply. YOU MUST BRING A FACE COVERING to meet up at the trailhead and to use on trail when it is not possible to avoid close proximity to other hikers. Please be mindful of other people’s space. DO NOT APPROACH ANYONE WITHOUT YOUR FACE COVERING. This will be out and back so we’ll plan on spreading out on the trail. \nPlease read the write up – there will be stream crossings but water levels are probably low enough to keep your feet dry. \nThis write up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: <11 miles\, moderate pace \nElevation Gain: 1100 ft \nRating 5/10 \nTrail: a bit of asphalt\, single track trail\, some rock hopping; out and back \nParking fee/pass: NO \nThe Plan \nThis elevation gain on such a long hike makes this an advanced beginner router if you’re willing to put forth a bit more effort. If some beginners decide to join us\, it is an easy trail to follow if you decide to return to the cars. The further in we go the more potential for water crossings. The main canyon is almost 4 miles in from the start\, but with minimal elevation gain\, and is quite beautiful. Our final destination and lunch spot will be Rogers Trail Camp. Seemingly in the middle of “no-where” there are a couple of picnic tables\, fire ring and even a short tunnel bored into the rock about 20 feet. \nThe fine print: I have no idea how much water is in the area!!!! It could make it a bit more challenging and hopefully a bit more fun. The chances that we’ll be going through water is about 99%\, though not much deeper than a foot. Keep in mind the unavoidable water is not until the middle portion of the hike. \nThe area: Here\, amid the arid-looking mountains north of Castaic Lake\, Castaic Creek flows the better part of the year through a sinuous gorge flanked by picturesque sandstone outcrops. The creek is perfect for wading – shallow\, slow-moving\, and warmed by the sun. Fish Canyon Narrows: In the trenchlike confines of middle Fish Canyon\, aridity and moisture stand side by side\, separated by a matter of a few yards. Mountain mahogany\, manzanita and other drought-resistant shrubs cling to the walls\, while a shallow stream gurgles merrily past a line of oaks\, sycamores\, willows\, and cottonwoods. It is almost as if a little slice of the Pacific Northwest was transplanted to Southern California. \nAnd also. . . When we hike this area I’m always asked if the body of water we see to the south is Castaic Lake. Well\, I looked it up and here’s what I found: \nPUMPED STORAGE \nElderberry Forebay\, a small reservoir separated from Castaic Lake by Elderberry Forebay Dam\, is located at the upper end of Castaic Lake and provides regulatory storage for Castaic Power Plant. During on-peak hours when the value of energy is high\, water from Pyramid Lake\, located north of Castaic\, flows 7.5 miles through the AngelesTunnel and the turbines of Castaic Power Plant to produce electricity. The water then enters Elderberry Forebay. During off-peak hours (nighttime and all day Sunday) when the cost of power is low\, water stored in Elderberry Forebay is pumped back into Pyramid Lake. This type of hydroelectric plant operation is called pumped storage. \nDirections:The trailhead is located off of the 5 freeway north of the City of Santa Clarita which is north of the San Fernando Valley. On the 5 freeway go about 6 miles north of Lake Hughes/Castaic and exit at Templin Hwy. Go right to the end of Templin Hwy (about 4 miles). There will be a barrier at the end of Templin; park here. There is also a road that goes to a DWP facility at the end of Templin; you do not need to go down this road. \nCarpooling/Caravaning/Lunch Pick-Up: When I hike in this area I usually stop at a Starbuck’s in Valencia. In Valencia exit at Valencia Blvd off of the 5 fwy and go west. Turn right on The Old Road and meet in the Starbucks parking lot. We’ll need to leave the parking lot by 8:00 am. The address for you map challenged navigation folks is 26802 The Old Road\, Santa Clarita 91381. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities.

SUMMARY:Mount McKinley via Gold Creek
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mount-mckinley-via-gold-creek \nHello fellow Hikers…Okay got another little known trail in the western San Gabriel Mountains located in Sylmar/Sunland area called Mount McKinley. This trail is a moderate climb on a fireroad until we hit a turn off to start our climb towards the top. This is where the hard rating comes in. From here will encounter some overgrowth due to a less traveled trail but should be doable. So the first three to four miles should be a gradual climb with the last one to two miles being our workout. I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, stats and photos….We will be following the AllTrails map from start to finish… \nTrail out and backMiles 10.7Rated HardElevation gain 2988Dogs…Unsure as it doesn’t specify \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:1) Hike your own hike2) Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring your face covering and all essentials you’ll need for a hike. \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Assistant Organizer and Event host in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guess

SUMMARY:Secret Trail to Coquina Mine - Post-Hike Picnic - VIPs Only
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Scroll down to rsvp[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nAs some of you know I have purchased an RV and will be integrating it into some of our hikes. As a practice run\, I’ve rented a RV space at Tapo Canyon Campground and will be leading a VIP hike in that area. When we return we’ll have a potluck get-together by my RV at the campground (its a short drive/long walk from trail head). Highlights along the way include tar pits and artifacts from an old ranch \nThis will be an exploratory hike I’ve wanted to do for years: a shortcut to the Coquina Mine\, aka the Steam Shovel in Chivo and Las Llajas Canyons. \nHere is the big picture of what we will try to accomplish.\nFor those of you who have done my infamous Las Llajas – Chivo loop this is a familiar area.  The yellow tracks are familiar trails we already use. The magenta line is where we will be doing some trail blazing. Aerial photos suggest there is a relatively clear path most of the way. (best viewed on a computer monitor) \n \nZooming in\, it appears there has been some traffic along my proposed route\, along with an alternate route. \n \nIf all goes according plan we will have blazed a trail that will take you to the Steam Shovel from Chivo Canyon (the usual way is via Las Llajas). Hopefully my fear of heights won’t get in the way \nWhen we are done we’ll meet back at my rv for a post-hike picnic/party \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 8 MILES WITH ABOUT 2000 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nDirections:\nFrom the 118 take Yosemite Dr north toward the hills for 1.6 miles. As you round the bend you will pass the trailhead and the name of the street changes to Cottonwood Dr. Make a right on Westwood St and park at corner. Its a short walk back to the trailhead. Meet there at 9am \n \nTo get to Tapo Cyn Campground and the picnic\, continue on Cottonwood to Tapo Cyn Rd and turn Right for 2 miles. Campground will be on left\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]JTNDc2NyaXB0JTNFJTBBJTIwJTIwalF1ZXJ5JTI4JTI0JTIwJTNEJTNFJTIwJTdCJTBBJTIwJTIwJTIwJTIwJTJGJTJGJTIwVGhlJTIwc3BlZWQlMjBvZiUyMHRoZSUyMHNjcm9sbCUyMGluJTIwbWlsbGlzZWNvbmRzJTBBJTIwJTIwJTIwJTIwY29uc3QlMjBzcGVlZCUyMCUzRCUyMDEwMDAlM0IlMEElMEElMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjQlMjglMjdhJTVCaHJlZiUyQSUzRCUyMiUyMyUyMiU1RCUyNyUyOSUwQSUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMC5maWx0ZXIlMjglMjhpJTJDJTIwYSUyOSUyMCUzRCUzRSUyMGEuZ2V0QXR0cmlidXRlJTI4JTI3aHJlZiUyNyUyOS5zdGFydHNXaXRoJTI4JTI3JTIzJTI3JTI5JTIwJTdDJTdDJTIwYS5ocmVmLnN0YXJ0c1dpdGglMjglNjAlMjQlN0Jsb2NhdGlvbi5ocmVmJTdEJTIzJTYwJTI5JTI5JTBBJTIwJTIwJTIwJTIwJTIwJTIwLnVuYmluZCUyOCUyN2NsaWNrLnNtb290aFNjcm9sbCUyNyUyOSUwQSUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMC5iaW5kJTI4JTI3Y2xpY2suc21vb3RoU2Nyb2xsJTI3JTJDJTIwZXZlbnQlMjAlM0QlM0UlMjAlN0IlMEElMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjBjb25zdCUyMHRhcmdldElkJTIwJTNEJTIwZXZlbnQuY3VycmVudFRhcmdldC5nZXRBdHRyaWJ1dGUlMjglMjdocmVmJTI3JTI5LnNwbGl0JTI4JTI3JTIzJTI3JTI5JTVCMSU1RCUzQiUwQSUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMGNvbnN0JTIwdGFyZ2V0RWxlbWVudCUyMCUzRCUyMGRvY3VtZW50LmdldEVsZW1lbnRCeUlkJTI4dGFyZ2V0SWQlMjklM0IlMEElMEElMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjBpZiUyMCUyOHRhcmdldEVsZW1lbnQlMjklMjAlN0IlMEElMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjAlMjBldmVudC5wcmV2ZW50RGVmYXVsdCUyOCUyOSUzQiUwQSUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyNCUyOCUyN2h0bWwlMkMlMjBib2R5JTI3JTI5LmFuaW1hdGUlMjglN0IlMjBzY3JvbGxUb3AlM0ElMjAlMjQlMjh0YXJnZXRFbGVtZW50JTI5Lm9mZnNldCUyOCUyOS50b3AlMjAlN0QlMkMlMjBzcGVlZCUyOSUzQiUwQSUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCU3RCUwQSUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCUyMCU3RCUyOSUzQiUwQSUyMCUyMCU3RCUyOSUzQiUwQSUzQyUyRnNjcmlwdCUzRQ==[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]
