SUMMARY:Ontario Peak and Bighorn Peak
DESCRIPTION:Total Distance: ~14 milesTotal Ascent: ~4\,200 feetType: Out and backDifficulty: Strenuous NOT FOR BEGINNERSHighest Elevation: 8\,696 feetPace: Moderate (25-30 minutes per mile)Optional: Post hike refreshment at the Mount Baldy Lodge restaurant in the Village. \nJoin me on this beautiful hike to one of the major peaks in the San Gabriel mountains. \nThe group will naturally spread out on the trail\, but we will periodically regroup to ensure everyone is accounted for. If your style is to begin with the group\, but not stay with the group\, then this might not be the hike for you. Pace will be moderate (25-30 minutes per mile) and the trail is well marked. Know your limits. \nIcehouse Canyon is the hikers’ gateway to the eastern high country and the Cucamonga Wilderness. Its broad\, V shaped portal leads east from San Antonio Canyon\, 10 miles north of Mt. Baldy Village\, and climbs 2600′ to Icehouse Saddle\, a prominent gap on the great Telegraph Ontario Ridge. The saddle is a major trail junction\, with routes leading in four directions. This time we’ll take the Ontario Peak Trail going through Kelly Camp. On our descent from Ontario Peak we will take the trail to Bighorn Peak\, then return to the trail junction and descend to Icehouse Saddle via the same route. \nLegend has it that the magnificent cedar beams for Mission San Gabriel were cut in the canyon\, then laboriously dragged down to the lowland by oxen teams. For years it was known as Cedar Canyon (now the name for a tributary of Icehouse Canyon). The present name dates from the 1860s\, when an ice plant in the lower canyon supplied ice to valley residents. \nThe lower reaches of the canyon are dotted with private cabins. Once there were many more; the big flood of 1938 wreaked havoc here\, as it did in other canyons of the range. Today\, the boulder-strewn floor of Icehouse Canyon bears testimony to nature’s torrential fury. \nAs always\, know your limits\, bring ample quantities of water\, electrolytes\, a hat and sunscreen\, good hiking shoes and hiking poles will be helpful. \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring ample quantities of water\, electrolytes\, a hat and sunscreen\, good hiking shoes and hiking poles will be helpful. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while carrying on a conversation with awesome fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \nAlso note: the parking lot fills up by 5:30 AM most weekends which means you may have to park a half mile down the road if you arrive at 6AM. Plan accordingly and allow plenty of time to park and be ready to go at 6:15 AM. \nAs a courtesy to others\, please do not wait until the last minute to drop. \nHope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Corriganville Grillfest with pre-hike\, Fit-Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 2 mi\, 500′ gain. \nThe Hike.4:30p – 6:00p. \nWe’ll be moving slow through both shaded and unshaded areas. \nWe’ll start from the Corriganville parking lot and move east towards the back end of the lot\, enter\, and continue towards the covered picnic area. After about 1/4 mile\, just before the picnic area\, we’ll turn right for 100′ and then right again for about 200′. Behind the shacks\, we’ll cross the railroad tracks and enter a wooded area at a secret trail. \nWe’ll take a steady trek up for 1/2 mile and 250′ of gain. We’ll turn left when we can\, and continue up for another 1/3 mile towards the wildlife tunnel. Just before the tunnel\, we’ll then head down a set of switchbacks. \nAt the bottom\, just in front of the covered picnic area\, we’ll circle around the park for about 1 mile\, finally arriving back at our cars. \nThis particular hike is well suited for those that want to hike just the first or second halves\, and then attend the grillfest. \nThe Grillfest.6:00 – 8:15p. \nWe’ll grab our items from our cars and head 1/4 mile to the covered picnic area (if it’s taken\, we’ll head to one of the many nearby tables\, which also have grills). \nWe’ll fire up the grills and have a cookout. I will be bringing charcoal as my pot-luck item. Bring anything you want that would go good on a grill. or go good with our grillfest. \nThe parking lot closes at sunset\, so we’ll end this when it starts getting dark. \nThe planned route is posted as a photo\, a couple pictures from past events at this location\, and then the plants that follow in this description. \nInteresting Notes. \nHere are a few plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nYellow Star Thistle \nThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing. Permanent brain damage is possible\, and affected horses may starve to death. Used in Turkish folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers. In a laboratory study\, aqueous extracts of fresh or dried flowers of yellow star thistle given orally showed significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats. \nHorehound \nThe leaves and flower tops have long been used in home remedies as a bitter tonic for the common cold. Horehound has been used traditionally as an expectorant and continues to find a place in cough lozenges and cold preparations. It now is used primarily as flavorings in liqueurs\, candies\, and cough drops. In addition\, extracts of the plant were used for the treatment of intestinal parasites and as a diaphoretic and diuretic. The picture is what the plant looks like when dry\, as in late summer. \nDirections. \nCorriganville Park7100 Smith RoadSimi Valley\, CA 9306334.263244\, -118.654719 \nThe park and parking lot closes at dusk \nFrom the 118 \nExit Kuehner Dr.\, south for 1.5 miles.Left (west) on Smith Rd. for 0.4 miles until dead end.Left into parking lot\, follow to end of lot. \nFrom the 101 @ CA23North CA-23 for 8 miles.East I-118 for 12 miles.Exit 30 Kuehner Dr.\, right (south) for 1.5 miles.Left (west) on Smith Rd. for 0.4 miles until dead end. \nThe Hike.Distance: 2 miles\, 1.5 hrs.Elevation Gain: 800′Difficulty: Easy IntermediatePace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes.Restrooms: YesDrinking Fountains: YesParking: Free at the trailhead parking lot.Trail: Fire road\, rocky trail\, single tracker. \nWhat to Bring.1-2 liters of water.Stuff for the grill and/or beverages to share.Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

That same picnic table will be on the right. \nFor the return\, we continue the loop for 1/4 mile\, then a relatively flat walk back for about a mile. \nHike Distance: 5.3 milesGain: 600′Distribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the second quarter.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road.Trail Variations: The first mile is flat. All of the trail is well groomed and not rugged.Duration: 3.5 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes\, at trailheadDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free in lot next to trail head. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nWild Oats \nThe mature seed of the plant is used as a cereal grain. All oats have edible seeds\, although they are small and hard to harvest in most species. Oats are hard to tell apart from weedy relatives\, so the term “sowing wild oats” came to be used to describe unprofitable activities and destructive sexual liaisons of an unmarried young male that could result in children being born out of wedlock. \nRed Brome \nGrass like with thorny appearing tops. A sub-species of foxtail chess. Can lead to flash fires. Winter fires don’t kill the seeds. \nDirections: \nHill Canyon Trailhead10241 Hill Canyon Road (address is before trailhead\, continue to gravel lot on left)Santa Rosa Valley\, CA 93012Coordinates of trailhead: 34.226495\, -118.930374 \nFrom CA-118:CA-118 west to CA-23 south.Exit 19 Tierra Rejada Rd.\, turn right (west) for 0.5 milesLeft (south) on Moorpark Rd. for 1.4 miles.Right on Santa Rosa Rd. for 3.7 miles.Left on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.Parking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-101 (from Camarillo and farther west):Exit Santa Rosa Rd. north for 4.9 miles.Turn right (south) on Hill Canyon Rd. for 0.6 miles.Parking in gravel lot on left. \nFrom CA-23 and CA-101 (from Thousand Oaks):North on CA-12 for 3.1 miles.Exit 16 Sunset Hills Blvd. and left (west) for 0.9 miles.Left (west) on E. SUMMARY:Conversation: SCR1 Levee Betterments
DESCRIPTION:The Santa Clara River is one of the last mostly natural remaining river ecosystems left in our state. There is no concrete or cement lining its sides or bottom. Until now. The county watershed protection agency (WPD) plans to repair 2.8 miles of the south bank from Hwy 101 upstream to Central Ave. \nSierra Club and other concerned organizations and local leaders need your help to insist on common betterments such as a levee bike path and trails\, vegetation covering the cement and more. \nIf you want to help our local environment\, please listen in and then take a simple step to write your thoughts to the county. Comment DUE DATE is July 27 and more info will be provided at the zoom meeting. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84987042466?pwd=aHlaUzI0WkcvT3Erb3p3OEovUXhZZz09 \nMeeting ID:[masked]Passcode:[masked]

SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:3 miles\, 700′ gain\, fit-beginner.This is one of the classic hikes in Simi Valley. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nThe Hike: \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave (https://www.google.com/maps/place/2+Washburn+St\,+Simi+Valley\,+CA+93065/@34.2645734\,-118.8010877\,18z/data=%213m1%214b1%214m5%213m4%211s0x80e82ee581e79e9f:0x42c324cfa0d16fd2%218m2%213d34.2645585%214d-118.7999842). Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks (zig-zag trail) for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. Beginners may find this climb difficult to continue at a fast pace. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute several times during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nIf you think this hike is too easy\, try running it. The entire hike is an incline and many beginners have declared this hike to be a butt burner. \nAt the top by the cross\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. \nThe route is posted as a photo for this event. \nDistance: 3 miles (round trip)Elevation Gain: 700′Difficulty: Fit Beginner (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)Duration: 3 hoursPace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes – at nearby places of businessDrinking Fountains: Yes – at nearby places of businessParking: FreeTrail: Mostly single-track\, excellent conditionWhat to Bring: 1 liter of water.Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Drinks or snacks to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Flashlight or headlamp. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liabilityhttps://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:🌕 Buck Moon Hike on Mt. Basura - Friday Night Party 🥂
DESCRIPTION:The Full Moon in July is the Buck Moon\, named after the new antlers that emerge from a buck’s forehead around this time of the year. It is also called Thunder Moon\, Hay Moon\, and Wort Moon. \n“Mt Basura” is my name for the Calabasas/Lost Hills Landfill. Our destination is a small peak overlooking the landfill with views of Calabasas and Agoura beyond. \n🍽Bring drink and light snacks to share. \nOur usual hikes to Mt Basura are about 8-9 miles. I have created a shorter option of about 5.8 miles with about 1\,400′ total ascent. The trails are clear and wide — perfect for a moonlit hike. \n👉NO WHITE LIGHTS ALLOWED ON HIKE. Green and/or red lights are ok (but lights may not be needed since the area will be well lit by the moon). \nIf you require a white light then this hike is not for you. Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes. https://amz.run/4bkH. (emergencies excepted\, of course) \n🍺🍹 Don’t forget to bring something cold to drink and snacks to share for the top of Mt Basura \nSunset 8:00 pmMoon rise 8:16 pm \nHike is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nPark near the north end of Las Virgenes Rd. Arrive early to secure your spot. Hike starts at 7pm

SUMMARY:Sagebrush Cantina: Hindsite
DESCRIPTION:Many from this group\, plus other friends\, will attend this event at Sagebrush Cantina. The band playing (Hindsite) puts on a fantastic show. \nThis is one of the best venues I’ve experienced on LA’s west side\, and this is one of the best bands I’ve seen at this venue. Come see a Hollywood quality show for free. \nWe’ll be seated in the outdoor area. Expect at least 30 of us. Seating is tough here\, so even if we don’t all sit together\, we’ll be seeing one another on the dance floor! \nThe band starts at 8p\, but get there an hour earlier and you’ll likely get a seat with the group. \n23527 Calabasas Rd\, Calabasas\, CA 91302(818) 222-6062

SUMMARY:Simi Peak from China Flats Trailhead
DESCRIPTION:Let’s beat the heat! Bring enough water and if you can bring extra for Don’s tree that is at the peak. \nNot for beginners \nDistance: 6> miles \nElevation Gain: 1900 feet \nPace: My pace \nTrail: Single track\, exposed\, out and back \nDirections: From the 101 Fwy\, exit Lindero and go north. Drive several miles. At Wembly Ave.\, turn left and park or make a u-turn and park on Lindero. Trailhead is off of Lindero on the right. \n***************************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. SUMMARY:Angel Vista - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \n \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have our typical snack-share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \n \nYou will see several plants of note: \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \n \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \n \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 take the Ventu Park exit (3 miles north/west of the 23) and go South toward the ocean. At Lynn Road turn right. VERY soon you will pass an open space on your left. Watch for the entrance to Regal Oak Ct on your left\, where you will turn left. Take it all the way to the end and park. This is a neighborhood\, so please keep the noise down. \nWe will meet not quite at the end of the road. We’ll cross a gate along the side of the street and across from the houses\, then move 100 yards to the right and enter the trail. \nHike Distance: 3.0 milesGain: 800′Distribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Out and back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Double track\, single track.Duration: 4 hoursDogs: Yes.Restrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: No.Parking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring:1 liter of water for every 3 miles.Hiking shoes/boots. SUMMARY:Paradise Falls - Moonridge - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.3 miles\, 800′ gain\, fit beginner. \nA hike to Paradise Falls is one of the most popular things to do for those visiting Simi Valley\, yet a lot of people that live nearby rarely make this fun hike or perhaps have never done it. There are several paths one can take to the falls. \nThis one is often described as “easy” but I rate it easy-intermediate because there are a few extended inclines of 1000 steps and there are several hills of about 100 steps that are somewhat steep. There are also a couple “stair cases” made of railroad ties that are up to 4 stories. \nThe waterfall is flowing fully even during our drought conditions. It is fed by urban run-off\, surface water waste created by urbanization. It feeds into a small pond\, where I see people swimming and diving on occasion\, but this water is not safe or legal to swim in due to health risks and debris hidden below the surface. \nThis is Mark the Bold’s Moonridge loop route. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll head about 100 steps north and go down and into an under-street tunnel to cross the road. We’ll turn right out of the tunnel\, and follow this path around. \nThere are several splits of this trail\, so follow the group. The trail leads through a thick canopy to the bottom of the steps that lead to the main parking lot. We’ll regroup there. \nWe’ll continue along the Moonridge trail\, following it around\, crossing a fire road\, and make a left at the North Teepee trail for about 500′ to a large Teepee. We can take a few pictures\, there’s a drinking fountain\, and we can rest a moment. Then we’ll continue down to the waterfall and hang out for a short while. \nTo continue\, we’ll head partly back up and across the back side of the waterfall along Wildwood Canyon trail. After about another 200 yards\, we’ll come to couple picnic tables on the right where we’ll share snacks and beverages (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nReturning EarlyFor those that wish to head back instead of hanging around for the entire snack share\, you are responsible for finding your own way back. You can either follow the posted route and map\, or take this alternate route: left at the next junction\, a relatively steep up for 200 yds. back to the Teepee\, turn right and continue 1/2 mile until it dead-ends\, then turn right again. After 1/2 mile\, you will reach the trail head parking lot. Turn right at the road for 4 block and cross the street to find the tennis court parking lot. \nContinuing with the groupWe’ll continue for 1/3 mile along the Wildwood Canyon trail\, cross a bridge\, make a left\, and follow the Indian Creek trail for 1 mile until arriving back through the tunnel and back to the parking lot. \nIf you are not following the leader on the return\, you should know:• After crossing the bridge and turning left\, you will come to a creek. We’ll be taking a sharp turn to the left a few feet before the second creek. It’s easy to miss and almost doesn’t even look like a trail. \nInteresting Notes: \nYou will see several entities of note: \nPrickly Pear Cactus \nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn or scrape off needles – even stones can be used if you don’t have a knife. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nSugar Bush \nLooks almost like Laurel Sumac. Pointy leaves\, which is one way to tell it apart from the Lemonade berry. Has fuzzy red berries in long clumps that can be used to make a lemonade like drink. Sap from the fruit can be used as a sweetener. Leaves are edible. Can only be found in the California hills. \nDirections: \nWildwood Park635 W Avenida De Los ArbolesThousand Oaks\, CA 91360 \nFrom the 118: \nCA-118 west to CA-23.Continue south on CA-23 to exit 15 for 4.8 miles\, Avenida de los ArbolesTurn right (east) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. There will be tennis courts on the right with a parking lot. \nFrom CA-23: \nCA-23 to exit 15\, Avenida de los ArbolesEast on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until it ends.Trail head on the left.Turn right (east) on Avenida de los Arboles for 3.3 miles until 4 blocks before it ends. SUMMARY:MidWeek Hike-Las Virgenes Trail to Cheseboro Ridge ~5 mile loop
DESCRIPTION:Approximately 5.0 mile loop. \nPLEASE FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS IN THE WRITEUP BELOW TO GET TO THE TRAILHEAD. \nThis Loop is about 5 miles long. This hike is rated moderate for its elevation gain and distance. The group hikes between 2.5 and 3.5 mph. If you cannot hike at a minimum of 2.5 mph\, please do not sign up for this hike. \nI recommend this hike for people who are already in shape and want a mid-week conditioning hike. \nFollow the directions to the trailhead as indicated below. \nDrink plenty of water prior to and during the hike. \nNote that we are starting at the Las Virgenes Trailhead on Las Virgenes Road. \n \nIf you want to bring your dog\, it’s fine as long as the pooch is leashed. \nWe will start at the northern end of Las Virgenes Rd and hike to the Cheseboro Ridge Trail. We’ll then proceed up to the Cheseboro Ridge Trail and complete a loop. \nMap:http://www.nps.gov/samo/planyourvisit/upload/Cheeseboro07.pdf \nDirections: To get to trailhead take 101 and exit Las Virgenes Rd. Turn north (away from beach) to end of road. If you are coming up from PCH\, drive up Malibu Canyon to the end (Malibu Cyn changes its name to Las Virgenes Rd). The trailhead is marked clearly. Park on the street. If you can’t park near the trailhead\, just look for space down the street. We’ll wait until you walk to the trailhead. \nParking is free. \n______________________________________________________________________ \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). SUMMARY:Corriganville the Back Way Double Loop Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:3.5 miles\, 700′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nShort option: 2.0 miles\, 500′ gain option. There is an option to shorten this to 2.0 miles and 500′ of gain by skipping the 2nd loop\, which starts from our social event area. The wait would be about 35 minutes for the rest of the group to complete the 2nd loop. \nWe’ll start this hike by parking on the south side of the CA-118 at the Rocky Peak exit. We’ll walk west along the Santa Susana Pass Rd. for about 500 feet\, and directly across from Lilac Ln\, we’ll enter a trail. We’ll move along a relatively flat section from 1/2 mile\, then turn right and make a gradual climb until right before the wildlife tunnel. \nThen we’ll take a set of switchbacks down into Corriganville. We’ll now be in front of a picnic pavilion. We’ll turn right and proceed to loop through the park\, where we’ll pass an outdoor amphitheater\, then make a mild climb to the top of a hill. \nWe’ll turn right\, zig-zag down\, and then make a left to the wide center trail that leads up through the park to its only parking lot. We won’t cross to the lot yet. \nWe’ll follow the trail as it bends to the right until it eventually bends back left and heads into the parking area. We’ll then walk along the side of the lot and head back to the picnic pavilion\, where we’ll have a social event (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nAfter the event\, we’ll circle around the front of the pavilion and walk along railroad tracks for 200 yards towards the park lot. Behind a couple small shacks\, we’ll turn left and cross the tracks\, then head onto a trail and take this all the way back to Santa Susana Pass Rd. and then our cars. \nThe park officially closes at sunset\, so we’ll try to start heading back before dark. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. In the last summer\, fall\, and winter months\, the flowers will have turned brown and the leaves we take on a greyer color. \nDirections:Rocky Peak Exit\, South Side of CA-118Simi Valley\, CA 9306534.268396\, -118.636139 \nFrom the 118Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \nFrom the 101 @ CA-23North CA-23 for 8.4 miles.East I-118 for 14 miles.Exit 32 Rocky Peak Rd.Park on south of the freeway along Santa Susanna Pass Rd. \n \nThe Hike:Distance: 3.5 milesElevation Gain: 700′Difficulty: Easy Intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781).Pace: 2.0 mphDogs: Yes.Restrooms: Yes\, at the picnic pavilion.Drinking Fountains: YesParking: Free\, south side of CA-118Trail: Single Track\, Double Track\, and fire road.Purpose: Social \nWhat to Bring:1-2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp. We found the trail\, after all the money and hard work put into building it\, has been neglected since it was opened. However\, at the end of our hike\, we heard workers apparently clearing out the overgrowth with chain saws. For that reason I want to go back and check their progress. This will be perfect for strong beginners that can handle 4 miles with little elevation gain and possibly an overgrown trail again. \nMEETUP LOCATION: Juan Bautista de Anza Park 3701 Lost Hills Rd\, Agoura Hills. A few people had asked about donations in his memory and the obit includes links for Audubon and COSF. I think those are good choices reflecting Babu’s interests.Remembering the life of William Ossa 1941 – 2021 \nRead William Ossa’s obituary and explore the special moments that made up their life. \nThank you for the help with the celebration of life hikes. Fitting tributes and a send off in a style Babu would appreciate. I’m glad we were able to gather and hike in his honor. \nAt some time in the future\, plan was September/October\, but with rising covid that could be pushed further out\, there will be a contra dance in Santa Barbara sponsored by Babu. Babu can be spotted in several Santa Barbara contra dance videos on Youtube. Admission will be free that night\, his gift to the contra dancing community. I’ll let you know. I think quite a few hikers would enjoy contra dancing. I tell people that if they can walk briskly\, count to 8 and follow directions (listening and obeying directions being the hard part) they can learn to contra dance. Always done with a live band and dances are taught and prompted. Easy for most to learn in a few nights. Introductory lessons given about 1/2 hour before dances start to get newcomers oriented. That is how I first met Babu many years ago. \nHappy trails\, \nWendy

\nAt some time in the future plan was September/October but with rising covid that could be pushed further out there will be a contra dance in Santa Barbara sponsored by Babu. Babu can be spotted in several Santa Barbara contra dance videos on Youtube. Admission will be free that night his gift to the contra dancing community. I’ll let you know. I think quite a few hikers would enjoy contra dancing. I tell people that if they can walk briskly count to 8 and follow directions (listening and obeying directions being the hard part) they can learn to contra dance. Always done with a live band and dances are taught and prompted. Easy for most to learn in a few nights. Introductory lessons given about 1/2 hour before dances start to get newcomers oriented. That is how I first met Babu many years ago. \nHappy trails \nWendy;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=3701 Lost Hills Road:geo:-118.7076018,34.126843

SUMMARY:Bowling and Social Event
DESCRIPTION:We are back! \nSince this adventure started\, we have set ourselves apart. It’s the people and the format of our events. Hiking is fun. Hiking-Plus is fun-Plus! \nThis is Bowling with a Social Event! \n \nPlease be aware there are two Harley’s bowling alleys in Simi Valley. This is the one on Cochran at Stearns. \nYou do not have to bowl to attend this event. Come for the party – watch\, laugh\, and share some snacks and beverages with the group! Please post in the comments if you don’t plan to bowl so we have a good bowler count. \nIn the past\, those that have paid in cash by the event time (5:45p) have been able to bowl\, so we won’t set an RSVP limit. Still\, if you have not indicated in the comments that you aren’t bowling\, I’m going to assume you plan on bowling\, so try not to be no-show or day-of-the-event cancel. \nFeel free to discretely bring snacks and drinks to share. Officially\, nothing from outside is allowed\, but many of us have smuggled in some food and drink. Otherwise\, they are available for purchase at the snack bar. This location has a full bar. \nPlease find us along the right edge when facing the lanes at the event start time. The event host will put together teams\, assign lanes\, and collect cash payment. \nWe have lanes reserved under the name Hiking Plus. They have increased prices\, so we have to as well. \nThe price includes shoes (bring or wear socks). Please bring $21.00 cash. The cost will be $17 unless there are no shows and your lane only has 4 people. In that case\, the cost will be $21.00. \nThis is a fund-raising event to pay the costs of this site over the past 18 months\, yet your cost is still below the regular price. \nAre you any good at bowling? That would be the exception. Most of us are terrible or haven’t bowled since we were kids. This is about having a venue for a social event\, with something inexpensive to do if you want. \n \nBowling EtiquetteBe ready to bowl when it’s your turn\, else someone else may bowl for you to keep the game moving. \nHarley’s Valley Bowl5255 Cochran StreetSimi Valley\, CA 93063(805) 584-2695 \nMany of us may head across the parking lot after bowling\, to “Bao Su a Chinese Cuisine”.

SUMMARY:El Prieto to Brown Mt Trail & Ken Burton Junction
DESCRIPTION:Per Sachika and Carmen A. request. Out and back. Trail is well maintained\, shaded and cooler in the canyon. \nNot for beginners. \nDistance: 6>Elevation Gain: 2086> we will find out \nDirections: \nOn the 210 Freeway from La Canada/Hwy 2\, take the Arroyo/Windsor exit and head north (left). Make an immediate right on Woodbury Rd. Make a left at Lincoln Ave. Drive approx one mile and turn left on W Altadena Ave. Trailhead is at the end of the street (~1/2mi). Street parking can be found past Odyssey School\, possibly between Florecita and Crestford Dr. \nFrom Pasadena/110 Fwy/605 Fwy\, exit at Lincoln Ave. Go north (right) for about a mile and a half. Turn left on W Altadena Ave and follow the directions above from there. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. The VHC Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any VHC Meetup events\, you are releasing the VHC Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience.
