Hike: Mountaineer's Route to Saddle Peak and Wine Tasting DESCRIPTION:High above central Malibu is Saddle Peak\, just east of Malibu Canyon\, one of the highest points in the Santa Monica Mountains at 2\,805 feet. Up here you are literally in the sky\, often above the clouds over Malibu. On a clear day\, facing south\, you can see a vast stretch of the Pacific coast\, Catalina and Channel Islands miles out in the water. If facing north\, you can see the inland valleys of the Malibu Creek watershed or east toward Calabasas and the San Fernando Valley. On a cloudy day\, you look down on the cloud tops as if in an airplane. \n\n\nThe climb up Topanga Ridge will be the toughest part of getting there. It is a knife-edge ridge that will require some minor bouldering/scrambling (0.5 – 1.0). There is a steep 200′ sandstone slab that serves as an optional shortcut for the heartier hiker with some derring-do. At the top of the ridge\, and 1200 ft higher than the parking lot\, is the old and abondoned Topanga Fire Lookout. We will take a short break here and enjoy the stupefying views of the San Fernando Valley\, LA Basin\, Santa Monica Bay and even San Gorgonio Pass 100 miles away. From here we will connect up with the Backbone Trail and hike up to Saddle Peak and take another break on the rock formations. The Mishe Mokwa Trail is known as the most beautiful trail in the Santa Monica Mountains. Round trip distance is 7.5 miles with a net elevation gain of 1000 feet (about 1700 total). \nDuring Wednesday’s hike we will be visiting 2 Earthcaches: Sandstone Peak and Inspiration Point \nSandstone Peak\, the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3\,111 feet\, is not sandstone at all. Its actually made of igneous rock formed 15 million years ago during the Conejo Volcanics. During this time Sandstone Peak grew to 10\,000 feet! After millions of years of erosion we are now left with its ruddy-colored core. From a distance its color makes it look like sandstone\, hence the name Sandstone Peak. \nAt Inspiration Point we will see more evidence of how the Santa Monica Mountains were formed. From here\, a view of Los Angeles\, Oxnard Plain\, and the Valleys of Southern California will reveal the evolution of the Farallon Plate subduction zone that created the transverse mountain range known as the Santa Monica Mountains. The Channel Islands\, which were created at the same time and by the same process that created the Santa Monica Mountains\, can be seen from here too. \nWe’ll take a side trip to Tri-Peaks\, a stack of house-sized volcanic boulders. Later\, it was part of the immense Strathearn Ranch\, founded by a pioneer Simi Valley family. They ran cattle on the land and enjoyed family vacations in the back part of the canyon. \nThe 3\,000 acre park has retained its natural setting and is an important wildlife corridor linking the Simi Hills with the Santa Susana Mountains. It is a lush riparian oak woodland with an intermittant stream. The canyon is sheltered by Oak Ridge to the north and Big Mountain to the south. \nThis loop hike will follow the Happy Camp Trail through the interior of the park on an abandoned ranch road. The trail winds through open grasslands and the gorgeous stream-fed forested canyon. One of the the main attractions are large swaths of native California grassland — some of the last remaining unspoiled areas in the state. \n\n\nBecause of the continued closure of the canyon trail up to the waterfall we are going to do this in a special way. We’ll meet on PCH at the entrance to the canyon and walk 2 miles down the ocean side of scenic PCH to the Chumash Trail. Several years ago PCH flooded out and broke up and had to be realigned — we’ll walk along the old broken PCH. \n  \n \nAlong the way we’ll have the opportunity to come face to face with Mugu Rock! You’ve seen it in the distance\, now you will be able to touch it. \n \nConsider the walk along PCH a warmup to the strenuous Chumash Trail. The Chumash trail is an ancient trail which leads from the Pacific Ocean to La Jolla Valley. It was used by the Chumash 7000 years ago\, and believed to be the oldest trail still in continuous use in the Santa Monica Mountains. \nThis trail is very strenuous with almost 1\,000 feet gain in only 0.6 miles. But the views from the top are spectacular \n \n  \nAfter we climb the Chumsh Trail we’ll swing around the Pt Mugu Peak Trail and bag Mugu Peak. We’ll take a group photo at the flag pole. Every year on 9/11\, since 2002\, chief selects from the Naval Base Ventura County replace the flag on Mugu Peak. The previous flag is retired in a ceremony on the base. \nHere we are a couple years back \n \n  \nAfter descending the peak we’ll head into the grasslands of La Jolla Valley \n \nWe’ll be taking our break at the hike-in campsite. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \n \nThe site was owned by President Reagan between 1957 and 1967\, before he was elected Governor of California. Prior to the Woolsey fire\, the Reagan Ranch property still had the original barn and stables\, which were used as the park maintenance facility. \nTrails loop through rolling meadowlands and grand old oaks and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \n\n\nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. We’ll be hiking on both the Sullivan side and the Mandeville side of the eastern ridge dividing the two canyons. \n\n\nThis will be a brand new custom hike with unknown mileage and total ascent. The mountain\, a bench and the trail are named after Burt Elliott who was very active with Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. Burt died of cancer in the Spring of 2014. He was the go-to guy for all things Conejo Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. We will ramble through amazingly beautiful canyons located above Castaic Lake. Thirty-seven types of endangered species live in this area including the California Condor that we may see flying high above. \nWe will meet at the white gate at 9:00am and depart promptly at 9:10. \nThe hike will start on a stretch of asphalt road that descends about ½ mile (this is the steepest portion of the entire hike). We will cross over a bridge to a dirt road that we will follow for a short distance before splitting off to the trail through Fish Canyon and continuing to our destination at the entrance of Piano Box Canyon. \nFish Canyon is interspersed with portions of an old concrete road built in the 1930’s. Throughout the hike we will cross a dry creek bed several times\, but we may encounter some water in the creek so be prepared to get your feet wet. Each person must maintain a distance of 6 feet or more\, and wear a mask when necessary. \nWe will start promptly at 9:15 \nFrom the Loon Point parking lot\, the trail will take us down to the sandy shore where we will walk a mile on an isolated beach with views of sandstone cliffs\, mossy rocks\, and perhaps remnants of oil fields and piers that at one time stood there. \nThis stretch of beach will lead us to Lookout Park with real bathrooms. Then the road will take us into the town of Summerland where we will stop for breakfast at the Summerland Beach Café.
