Answer will be revealed during hike! \nI will combine a 6-mile hike with the stairs taking in Rustic and Sullivan Canyons by way of little known trails creating a loop with about 1\,100 ft total ascent. Along the way we’ll visit Murphy Ranch\, a 1930s hideout where\, according to urban myth\, Third Reich sympathizers could sequester themselves until German rule had been established in the USA \n\n\n  \nDirections to Trailhead\nFrom Sunset Blvd\, 3 miles west of the 405\, turn north at the light onto Capri Drive. After 1/3 mile continue through the traffic circle\, remaining on Capri Drive for another 1/3 mile until it comes to and end at Casale Road. Sullivan Ridge Fire road begins to the left but do not turn left on Casale Rd. Find street parking to the right or on an adjacent roads below. \nAfter you park\, walk to the corner of Capri Dr and Casale Rd. SUMMARY:Easy Full Moon Hike - Santa Maria Canyon - Summer Hill Ranch Loop
DESCRIPTION:We’ll enjoy a great “lollipop” outing in the northeastern corner of Topanga State Park starting at the Viewridge Trailhead for Santa Maria Canyon. We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. After crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, we’ll enjoy a potluck party with excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Canyon. SUMMARY:Hiking with Mark E: Grasslands Trail to Century Lake & the Rock Pool
DESCRIPTION:Take a walk in the park with Mark\, Malibu Creek State Park\, that is. We’ll start on the Grassland Trail off of Mulholland Hwy and head south on a scenic stroll over rolling hills and through open fields of grain. \nOur first destination is picturesque Century Lake. Ducks\, coots\, and herons frequent the lake\, their squalling and callings reverberating off the weathered\, honeycombed cliffs rising from the lake’s far shore. Redwing blackbirds flit among the cattails and rushes. The famous diving scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed here. \n\n\nNext\, we’ll depart the shaded shores of Century Lake and head out to our final destination: The Rock Pool\, a placid stretch of water framed by volcanic cliffs. Cliff divers and rock climbers will provide the entertainment. This generically wild-looking site has served as a backdrop for outdoor sequences filmed for Planet of the Apes\, South Pacific\, Tarzan\, Swiss Family Robinson\, and many other productions. \nHike will be an easy 5 miles with 500 ft elevation gain. SUMMARY:Franklin Trail - Carpinteria
DESCRIPTION:At over 100 years old\, the Franklin Trail is one of the oldest trails in Carpinteria. It closed back in the 1970s because ranchers worried people could carry avocado root rot to their crops. Through much work among government agencies\, the Santa Barbara Land Trust and volunteers\, most of the trail has recently re-opened \nOur hike begins in an urban setting at Carpinteria High School with a steady climb up Franklin Canyon. After a couple miles and 850 ft up we arrive at a prime spot with spectacular vistas of Carpinteria\, Santa Barbara\, and the Channel Islands. Then its three more miles of hiking fire roads\, ranch roads\, with the trail moving up-and-down into wild areas and delivering us into the Los Padres National Forest at 1\,703 feet. We return the same way we came up. Round trip is about 10 miles with 2\,000 ft total ascent. \nHere are some photos from the trail. DESCRIPTION:Our hike begins at Serrania Ridge\, a pocket of parkland on the suburban edge of Woodland Hills. The ridge’s name—and its geography—seem to be in limbo. Serrania Ridge is also called Woodland Ridge. Is it a part of the Santa Monica Mountains? Or is it a part of Chalk Hill to the northeast? \nWe can contemplate these questions as we roller-coaster up and down–mostly up–partaking views of the Santa Monica mountains rising before us\, Calabasas hills to the right of us\, Chalk Hill to the left of us and the west San Fernando Valley behind us. After about 1 mile we cross dirt Mulholland and continue on a steep trail to the top of the ridge where we’ll turn onto a service road and head up to the water tank. \n🍷🥨Bring snack and drinks to share \nNO WHITE LIGHTS – Red and Green lights only. SUMMARY:Labor Day VIP Hike - Malibu
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’ll be hiking along one of our secret trails on the eastern ridge of upper Zuma Canyon. I haven’t been there since before the Woolsey fire and It was completely burned (along with the nearby connecting trails). It may be more overgrown now than it was when we first used it. \nWe will begin by hiking northwest from Kanan on the Backbone Trail to the Zuma Ridge Trail. The winding trail leads to a view of Newton Falls and Upper Zuma Falls\, which are especially grand after the winter rains. \n \nWe will then turn south along Zuma Ridge to Buzzards Roost where we will rest\, eat and take in ocean views. \n \nOur secret trail will come into view way across the canyon. It has been revealed by the Woolsey fire and not so secret anymore. \n \nAfter passing Buzzards Roost we will continue on Zuma Ridge until we come to an equestrian trail and descend down into Zuma Canyon. Maybe there will be water in the creek \n \nAfter a short break and crossing the creek we’ll head up my secret trail to the eastern ridge of Zuma Canyon and snake our way up and to the north back toward the cars closing the loop. \n \nHike is strenuous at about 9.5 miles with almost 2\,800 ft total ascent. We’ll go at an easy pace \nWear long pants. Bring at least 2qts water\, lunch/snacks\, good hiking shoes\nBruce did a little work on the secret trail Sunday (9/1). DESCRIPTION:Please join us on the site of the former Chumash village known as Talepop\, in the Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve. \nWe will be dedicating this hike to Jeff Sherman. Jeff signed up for this hike on August 21 before passing away last Monday during our Zuma Canyon hike. (See Comments section) \nHe loved hiking and would have wanted us to continue with this one. He will be with us in spirit. \nOur hike begins at Juan Bautista de Anza Park which will connect us with the Talepop Loop Trail. The trail climbs up a ridgeline with nice views of Liberty Canyon\, Las Virgenes Canyon and oak-studded rolling hills. \nThe hike will be a combination of ranch roads and single track trails.  We will make a side trip on the Grasslands trail and visit the historic Sepulveda Adobe and stroll past White Oak Farm (see below)\, creating a 4.75 mile (appx) lollipop with about 600 ft total ascent. The rancho was farmed and the many crops grown there included field corn\, beans\, potatoes\, turnips and onions. A mulberry tree planted by Don Pedro well over 100 years ago thrives today and is still bearing fruit. Sepulveda supported his family as a charcoal maker and supplier of oak firewood that heated the fine homes in Los Angeles of the day. Badly damaged in the 1994 earthquake\, seismic retrofitting and restoration began eight years later\, shepherded by the California State Parks Dept. Most work was completed in 2017 and public access accommodations were to follow.  The home itself is now barely a shell of its former self due to the Woolsey fire \nWhite Oak Farm\nWhite Oak Farm on Las Virgenes Rd was an early 20th-Century dairy and ranch. The barn here\, built in the 1920s\, is one of the oldest remaining barns in the region. During the 1920s  and through the 1940s\, the farm served as a “gentleman’s ranch.” The site was eventually purchased by Bob Hope in 1952. Bob Hope’s brother James lived there and managed the ranch for more than 20 years. The Hopes sold the property to the State in 1975 and it was incorporated it into Malibu Creek State Park. Today(?) it is a residence for one of the park rangers. \nThis photo is from my Thanksgiving 2016 hike. SUMMARY:Corral Canyon - Puerco Canyon Loop - Malibu Seafood - BYOB
DESCRIPTION:On this one we’ll visit the old pig farm and have a post-hike lunch at Malibu Seafood Patio where they let you bring your own drink. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. We’ll return to the restaurant via another secret trail \nWe’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and mysterious buildings… \nHike is about 7 miles\, with two interconnected loops and about 1800 ft total ascent. We will board the Island Packers boat in Ventura and embark at 9:00am on a 45-60 minute cruise to Scorpion Bay\, along the way we may encounter dolphins and other sea life. \nAt Scorpion Bay\, we will hike an easy 1.6 miles with an elevation gain of 278’ to the visitor center which begins the Cavern Point Loop trail. The loop itself is just under 2 miles with an elevation gain of 326’. The trail climbs up to Scorpion Ranch and past an old outhouse. There are several historical buildings that are worth exploring. We will continue to climb wooden steps that take us onto the bluffs. SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Night Hike\, Simi Valley
DESCRIPTION:This hike is cross posted with Dean’s\, Hiking with Dean. \nTonight’s hike will take us into a canyon that has views of the surrounding Santa Susana Mountains which we might see before it gets completely dark. This is not a difficult hike because the elevation is rather mild\, and it’s spread out over the whole hike with gradual climbs. \nNo white flashlights are allowed on this hike…it’s a Dean rule…bring green or red lights. Use white lights for emergencies only. \nBefore heading out\, we will stop for a break. Bring wine and booze\, and snacks to share. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll hike about ½ mile on level ground followed by a steady climb about a mile to the junction at the top. We’ll turn left\, climb a small hill\, and then head down about 1½ miles into the canyon. \nComing back\, we will climb about 3/4 of a mile up to the junction\, this is a semi steep incline but doable for beginners. The Tapo Canyon Trail is wide most of the time with firm smooth ground and many sandy sections. The hike is roughly 4.5 miles round trip starting from the trailhead and incorporating a “lollipop” loop. Total ascent is about 800 ft. \nOn the way out we’ll stop and party\, so bring some wine/booze and snacks to share \nNO WHITE LIGHTS – Red and Green lights only. SUMMARY:Once Upon a Time In Hollywood Chatsworth
DESCRIPTION:On this hike\, we will cross paths with the famous and the infamous. The famous is the site of the Spahn Ranch movie set for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The infamous is the site of the real Spahn Ranch. Along the way we’ll learn additional Chatsworth history. \nOur trek begins at the top of the Old Stagecoach Rd and ventures west and down through Twilight Canyon to Corriganville where Quentin Tarantino created the set for the Spahn Ranch in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For those of you familiar with the park\, you know this isn’t the first movie filmed at Corriganville and we’ll be visiting some of the older movie and TV sites also. \nAfter a little site-seeing and a loop around Corriganville we’ll head up a hill to the 118 and cross under it using a wildlife corridor. From there we’ll take a seldom-used trail to the fork at the Hummingbird Trail and Rocky Peak Trails. Here\, we’ll find a rock house — a small room under a rock overhang. It was built as part of a movie set. Across the trail from the rock house is a natural cave above the trail. Rumor has it that an entire family lived there at one time. This a perfect spot for our snack break! \n\n\nWe continue our loop by heading down Rocky Peak Rd and catch the El Camino Nuevo which will bring us to the Spahn Ranch. Nowadays\, the ranch is basically nonexistent; its remnants are fully blended into a maze of trees\, shrubs and poison oak. We’ll take another snack break at the infamous Manson family cave. Many western-themed movies and television shows were filmed on the ranch\, including Duel in the Sun (1946) and television episodes of Bonanza\, The Lone Ranger\, and Zorro. It was also the filming location for the B-movie The Creeping Terror. \nThe Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers\, the “Manson Family\,” for much of 1968 and 1969. Spahn was 80 years old and living at the ranch when he allowed The Manson Family to move in\, rent-free\, in exchange for labor.A wildfire destroyed all of the Spahn Movie Ranch’s film sets and residential structures on September 26\, 1970. George Spahn died on September 22\, 1974\, and is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in nearby Newhall\, California. \nHere we are February 2018; on the ranch and re-doing the iconic 1969 Time-Life photo.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCorriganville\nWe’ve been here many times. From 1937 to 1965 Corriganville Movie Ranch\, owned by stuntman Ray “Crash” Corrigan\, was a working film studio and movie ranch for outdoor location shooting. In 1949\, it opened to the public on weekends and holidays. \nWhy not just let Crash show you around the ranch on his DVD \nLoading ...\nIn 1965 Ray Corrigan sold the property to Bob Hope. A housing subdivision called Hopetown was developed and built on a parcel near the park entrance. In the late 1960s and early 1970s part of the site was used for motorcycle racing. In 1970 the ranch was swept by fire. SUMMARY:Haunted Scary Dairy Farm\, Camarillo
DESCRIPTION:The Camarillo State Hospital dairy farm at one time thrived with cattle and working patients from the hospital. Today it is known as the Scary Dairy and it is haunted! \nThis is a two part hike making it suitable for beginner and fit beginner/intermediate. \nPart one: We will hike about ¾ mile through lush vegetation to the dairy farm\, take time to explore the area and view the buildings. Then we will continue to the trail\, and those who wish to leave at this point are welcome to do so. \nPart two: We will hike a nearby trail with a gain of about 600′ with a couple of steeper areas. We will stop for a snack at a grassy area with views of Camarillo\, the Pacific\, and Channel Islands. After break time\, I may decide to continue on the trail another mile or so just to get in more hiking but that will be an unanimous group decision. \nMEETUP TIME AND OTHER INFORMATIONThe meet up time is at 9:45 am at the gravel parking lot near the dairy\, There is a parking fee of $6.00 (cash) – a kiosk with envelops is located there. Since then we have improved upon the hike eliminating all but a few yards of sidewalk walking. Dogs are ok on this one. \nThe open spaces and trails lacing Porter Ranch provides us the opportunity to wander the remaining vestiges of two riparian canyons and a cliff-rimmed hillside blanketed with aromatic sage. \nSo let us set out for the suburban stronghold of Porter Ranch for a variegated loop through the hidden wilds and wild suburbia of the north valley including Aliso Canyon and Limekiln Canyon. Two oak- and sycamore-shaded canyons–Aliso and Limekiln–and some eroded sedimentary outcroppings known as “The Palisades” are some of the highlights \nWe’ll be hiking on a section of the The Palisades featured in the movie and take our snack break at “E.T. Park” (Aliso Canyon Park) where they filmed some scenes from ET.  Get the movie here \nThe video below shows the location of our hike. SUMMARY:Switzer Falls\, San Gabriel Mountains
DESCRIPTION:7:30 AM to 12:30 PM \nDue to limited “good” parking and lots of hikers\, this will be an early morning meetup. \nThe hike to Switzer Falls is one of my favorite hikes and is one of the most popular hikes in front range of the San Gabriel Mountains. \nBring your hiking poles as we will cross the creek several times\, I’ve counted more than 20. Bring socks\, you may get your feet wet. Wear layers. bring a jacket and gloves\, it may be chilly. I will keep you posted on the weather \nWe will meet in the parking lot at 7:30\, and start promptly at 7:45. \nThis is a 4.5 mile out-and-back hike on the Gabrielino Trail that follows a running creek down into a wooded canyon. The trail begins at the Switzer Picnic Area and descends 650 feet to the stream below Switzer Falls. We will cross a bridge (group photo time) and walk down Bear Canyon on a worn down road that was paved in the 1930s. \nThis first stretch of the hike is in the shade. When the trail leaves the creek we will begin climbing up along a steep wall of the canyon. The views are great here! We will eventually find ourselves at the top of Switzer Falls\, then we will descend to small pools and cascades below. Unfortunately\, the pools beneath Switzer have been tagged with graffiti but it’s still quite beautiful. \nWe will stop here for a break and take some time to explore the creek and the surrounding area. SUMMARY:V.I.P. Hike: Mountaineer's Route to Saddle Peak and Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:High above central Malibu is Saddle Peak\, just east of Malibu Canyon\, one of the highest points in the Santa Monica Mountains at 2\,805 feet. Up here you are literally in the sky\, often above the clouds over Malibu. On a clear day\, facing south\, you can see a vast stretch of the Pacific coast\, Catalina and Channel Islands miles out in the water. If facing north\, you can see the inland valleys of the Malibu Creek watershed or east toward Calabasas and the San Fernando Valley. On a cloudy day\, you look down on the cloud tops as if in an airplane. \n\n\nThe climb up Topanga Ridge will be the toughest part of getting there. It is a knife-edge ridge that will require some minor bouldering/scrambling (0.5 – 1.0). There is a steep 200′ sandstone slab that serves as an optional shortcut for the heartier hiker with some derring-do. At the top of the ridge\, and 1200 ft higher than the parking lot\, is the old and abondoned Topanga Fire Lookout. We will take a short break here and enjoy the stupefying views of the San Fernando Valley\, LA Basin\, Santa Monica Bay and even San Gorgonio Pass 100 miles away. From here we will connect up with the Backbone Trail and hike up to Saddle Peak and take another break on the rock formations.
