SUMMARY:Full Moon over Chatsworth
DESCRIPTION:I am putting together a full moon hike for Saturday night in Chatsworth’s Deerlake Highlands. Hike will be about 3.5 miles total with about 1000 feet total ascent. I promise there won’t be any bushwhacking or poison oak. \nOur destination will be the west peak of Twin Peaks — 1\,718 ft above sea level. \nHike is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the hike rating guide here: https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nThis hike is not suitable for beginners. \nBring some adult beverages to share and food for yourself (or share). Please bring your own cups and plates. \n👉NO WHITE LIGHTS ALLOWED ON HIKE. Green and/or red lights are ok (but lights will probably not be needed since the area will be well lit). If you require a white light then this hike is not for you. Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes. https://amzn.to/2E9Fb30. The streets are paved and the lots are marked\, but there are no homes built yet. Its easy to get to\, however\, some of the streets are so new\, they are not on some maps (or GPS) yet\, so pay attention to these directions! \n21600 Poema Pl is an address near the parking area. The Meetup map works on Android (Google maps) and takes you to parking area via Canoga Ave. \nIf you are using iPhone or car GPS\, you may need the following directions\, or type in the coordinates 34.279440\,-118.600440 \n🚗From Canoga Ave – go north on Canoga Ave past the 118. Bear right and enter the Deerlake Ranch development; head uphill and make a left on Poema Pl. Go past the 21600 address\, cross the bridge\, then turn right into the construction site for Crestley Homes. Park in cul de sac to the right \n🚙From Topanga Cyn Blvd – go north on Topanga past the 118. Turn right on Poema Pl\, but don’t go all the way to 21600. SUMMARY:Journey to the Center of the City - Franklin Canyon

On this 6-7 mile hike I will take you through Franklin Canyon and then a bit off-trail to the “planar” center of Los Angeles. It will make a great photo opp. There will be about 1200 ft of  total ascent. It is rated MEDIUM \nFranklin Canyon Park is one of the very few places in LA with a greenbelt filled with pines\, sycamore\, eucalyptus and cedars\, most notably the Atlas Cedar and mature Coast Redwoods that are a rare site in most big cities. \nHighlights along the way to the center of the city: \nFranklin Canyon Lake:\nThe location where we see Opie skipping a rock in the water during the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show and Capt. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly Drive\, and turn left again on Beverly Drive\, at Fire Station No. 2. The third right is Franklin Canyon Drive. Continue through the residential area to park entrance. At the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive turn right onto Lake and head toward the end of Lake Dr to parking lot next to large grass lawn. \n(If you are coming down Sunset from east of Beverly Dr its probably easier to take Rexford to Beverly) \nFrom the San Fernando Valley: \nThis is one of those cases when the GPS will mess you up using the destination address. But if you use the address 2300 Lake Dr you will get real close and you just need to keep driving  0.3 miles to near end of road (works with Google Maps/Android). \nHere are the written directions to 1930. You will drive past many parking lots and turnouts. Keep driving until you can see the chain-link fence at end of road \nTake the 101 to Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. Head south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Drive just before Coldwater merges into Mulholland Dr.  Road signs read “Road Closed 800 Feet” “Sunset to Sunrise”; this is the park entrance. Do NOT make a U-turn as this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay on paved surface\, drive past the Outdoor Classroom/Nature Center\, and continue south of the lake for 1.5 miles\, bearing left onto Lake Dr at stop sign\, and head toward the end of Lake Dr to large parking lot next to large grass lawn. You will drive 0.6 mi past the sign for “Franklin Canyon Ranch” then 0.3 mile past the point marked 2300 Lake Dr  to the large parking lot on the left \nInteractive Map\n \nHere is an aerial and street view of your destination

BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nCome celebrate the relaunch of the HWD website and the 5th anniversary of the VIP Circle (aka the VIP Club). \nHike Details\nWe’ll do a hike in Malibu and have a post-hike lunch at our favorite Malibu restaurant where I will be serving up Mango Margaritas and who knows what else. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled.
