SUMMARY:Labor Day VIP Hike - Malibu
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’ll be hiking along one of our secret trails on the eastern ridge of upper Zuma Canyon. I haven’t been there since before the Woolsey fire and It was completely burned (along with the nearby connecting trails). It may be more overgrown now than it was when we first used it. \nWe will begin by hiking northwest from Kanan on the Backbone Trail to the Zuma Ridge Trail. The winding trail leads to a view of Newton Falls and Upper Zuma Falls\, which are especially grand after the winter rains. \n \nWe will then turn south along Zuma Ridge to Buzzards Roost where we will rest\, eat and take in ocean views. \n \nOur secret trail will come into view way across the canyon. It has been revealed by the Woolsey fire and not so secret anymore. \n \nAfter passing Buzzards Roost we will continue on Zuma Ridge until we come to an equestrian trail and descend down into Zuma Canyon. Maybe there will be water in the creek \n \nAfter a short break and crossing the creek we’ll head up my secret trail to the eastern ridge of Zuma Canyon and snake our way up and to the north back toward the cars closing the loop. \n \nHike is strenuous at about 9.5 miles with almost 2\,800 ft total ascent. We’ll go at an easy pace \nWear long pants. Bring at least 2qts water\, lunch/snacks\, good hiking shoes\nBruce did a little work on the secret trail Sunday (9/1). The parking lot is on the right (west side of what is now Kanan-Dume Road) and easy to spot. \nFrom Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu\, go north on Kanan Dume Road about 4.3 miles\, just through the “first tunnel\,” and make a left turn into the parking lot on the west side of Kanan Dume.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Talepop Loop & Lunch at La Paz
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on the site of the former Chumash village known as Talepop\, in the Liberty Canyon Natural Preserve. \nWe will be dedicating this hike to Jeff Sherman. Jeff signed up for this hike on August 21 before passing away last Monday during our Zuma Canyon hike. (See Comments section) \nHe loved hiking and would have wanted us to continue with this one. He will be with us in spirit. \nOur hike begins at Juan Bautista de Anza Park which will connect us with the Talepop Loop Trail. The trail climbs up a ridgeline with nice views of Liberty Canyon\, Las Virgenes Canyon and oak-studded rolling hills. \nThe hike will be a combination of ranch roads and single track trails.  We will make a side trip on the Grasslands trail and visit the historic Sepulveda Adobe and stroll past White Oak Farm (see below)\, creating a 4.75 mile (appx) lollipop with about 600 ft total ascent. Bring at least a quart of water. \nPost hike lunch is down the road at La Paz Restaurant\n4505 Las Virgenes Rd.\nCalabasas\, CA 91302 \nSlide Show\nhttps://hwdmedia.s3.us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/28194703/Talepop.mp4\nThe swing is gone but the swingers will be there! \n\n\nThe Sepulveda Adobe\nBuilt in 1863\, the home of California pioneer homesteader Don Pedro Alcantra Sepulveda stands today on its original site just west of the corner of Las Virgenes Road and Mulholland Highway. \nPedro Sepulveda and his wife Soledad raised their twelve children at this small home near Las Virgenes Creek. The rancho was farmed and the many crops grown there included field corn\, beans\, potatoes\, turnips and onions. A mulberry tree planted by Don Pedro well over 100 years ago thrives today and is still bearing fruit. Sepulveda supported his family as a charcoal maker and supplier of oak firewood that heated the fine homes in Los Angeles of the day. Badly damaged in the 1994 earthquake\, seismic retrofitting and restoration began eight years later\, shepherded by the California State Parks Dept. Most work was completed in 2017 and public access accommodations were to follow.  The home itself is now barely a shell of its former self due to the Woolsey fire \nWhite Oak Farm\nWhite Oak Farm on Las Virgenes Rd was an early 20th-Century dairy and ranch. The barn here\, built in the 1920s\, is one of the oldest remaining barns in the region. During the 1920s  and through the 1940s\, the farm served as a “gentleman’s ranch.” The site was eventually purchased by Bob Hope in 1952. Bob Hope’s brother James lived there and managed the ranch for more than 20 years. The Hopes sold the property to the State in 1975 and it was incorporated it into Malibu Creek State Park. Today(?) it is a residence for one of the park rangers. \nThis photo is from my Thanksgiving 2016 hike. SUMMARY:Corral Canyon - Puerco Canyon Loop - Malibu Seafood - BYOB
DESCRIPTION:On this one we’ll visit the old pig farm and have a post-hike lunch at Malibu Seafood Patio where they let you bring your own drink. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. We’ll return to the restaurant via another secret trail \nWe’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and mysterious buildings… \nHike is about 7 miles\, with two interconnected loops and about 1800 ft total ascent. I’ll bring some white wine. \nBring sunscreen\, hat\, 2 quarts water\, sturdy shoes and a snack. Clothing optional. \nThere is street parking on PCH\, $7.00 in lot next to restaurant at the iron ranger — cc ok \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. SUMMARY:Scorpion Bay / Cavern Point Loop – Santa Cruz Island
DESCRIPTION:*** TICKETS ARE SOLD OUT / RESERVATIONS ARE CLOSED *** \nLet’s head to the islands\, that is the Channel Islands\, and hike Santa Cruz Island at Scorpion Bay and the Cavern Point Loop trail. \nThis is an all day event that includes a six mile hike with a total of 600’+ elevation gain. \n** Reserve your boat tickets at Island Packers ASAP then let me know in the comments that you have bought your ticket. I will remove you from the list if you haven’t bought your ticket within one week after you RSVP. \nIt is imperative that we arrive at 8:15 at Island Packers\, even sooner\, to check in. We will board the Island Packers boat in Ventura and embark at 9:00am on a 45-60 minute cruise to Scorpion Bay\, along the way we may encounter dolphins and other sea life. \nAt Scorpion Bay\, we will hike an easy 1.6 miles with an elevation gain of 278’ to the visitor center which begins the Cavern Point Loop trail. The loop itself is just under 2 miles with an elevation gain of 326’. The trail climbs up to Scorpion Ranch and past an old outhouse. There are several historical buildings that are worth exploring. We will continue to climb wooden steps that take us onto the bluffs. Along the bluffs we’ll have amazing views of the Pacific Ocean\, Scorpion Cove\, and depending how clear the day is\, we may see the silhouettes of Anacapa Island and California‘s coastline. \nThe Cavern Point Loop will take us to the trail back to Scorpion Bay.
