SUMMARY:New Year's Hike: Mini Bulldog Loop - MASH Site - Lost Cabin Trail
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a hike in Malibu Creek State Park the other groups don’t do. Our old destination\, the stone house\, is gone but this moderately strenuous 7-miler is still a great diversion from the usual MCSP treks. \nWe’ll start at the western end of Crags Rd near Malibou Lake and head on up to Lakeside Lateral and the Bulldog Mtwy via Maqueketa Terrace. We’ll loop the lateral and from there we descend down along the Bulldog Lateral. Bulldog is a fire road/powerline access road that descends crookedly along slopes thickly clothed in chaparral and will provide rewarding views of Goat Buttes. \nNear the bottom we’ll come across a dry creek bed then take Crags Rd to the MASH site. After paying homage to Hawkeye\, we’ll visit the Lost Cabin site. The trail to the site probably has the most beautiful surroundings in the park with the red sandstone Goat Buttes to the north and green\, rugged mountains to the south. It is very secluded with few travelers. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,300 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections \nWe’ll meet in the Malibou Lake Neighborhood on the corner of Crags Dr and Lookout Dr. Park on neighboring streets such as Lookout Dr\, Seminole Dr or Olivera Dr.

SUMMARY:Angel Vista - New Year potluck hike - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nHappy new year 2023!\nLet’s start a new year with almost full moon at Angel Vista! \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco \nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry \nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. Boiling or baking takes care of any “toxic” issue as does drying raw berries. \nDirections:\nRosewood Trailhead\n398 Regal Oak Ct.\nThousand Oaks\, CA 91320 \nFrom the 101\nVentu Park exit\, South (toward ocean).\nRight on Lynn Road for 1000′.\nLeft on Regal Oak Ct. for 1/3 mi.\nPark on the street \nHike Distance: 3.0 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline occurs in the first half\, which is a continuous climb.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along the street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nFAQ\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Beginner Hike: Rancho Sierra Vista Trefoil - 5 miles\, 650' - Weather Permitting
DESCRIPTION:This is a Beginner hike – that means no steep climbs\, no loose soil or slippery rocks on trails\, limited distance\, and limited elevation gain. If you regularly do our faster/longer/higher Intermediate hikes\, you might want to consider leaving room for newcomers to the group. \nRain is forecast for Thursday; 80% chance before 10 a.m. If it’s raining at my (nearby) home\, or at the trailhead\, the hike will be cancelled. \n—————————————-\nFrom the National Park website:\nTwo threads of local history intertwine to establish the identity of Rancho Sierra Vista/ Satwiwa. Ranch structures and introduced grasses represent over a century of ranching\, while native plants reflect an environment that Chumash Indians lived in for thousands of years. \nThe gentle slopes yield trails that picnickers\, hikers\, bikers\, and equestrians enjoy during every season. Big Sycamore Canyon Trail descends from Satwiwa to the Pacific Ocean along a historic Chumash trade route. \nThe Satwiwa Loop Trail is designated for hikers only\, and meanders through an area considered sacred by the Chumash. Keep an eye out for deer and coyote in the coastal sage scrub\, hawks and falcons soaring overhead\, and sweeping views of Boney Mountain and Sycamore Canyon. Follow all trail guidelines by only biking or horseback riding on designated trails. \nThe May 2013 Springs Fire burned much of Point Mugu State Park and portions of Rancho Sierra Vista/Satwiwa. Whether recreating on foot\, bike or horseback\, be on the lookout for signs of plants\, soil\, and animals recovering from the effects of this wildfire.\n—————————————-\nWe will park at the paved main lot for Rancho Sierra Vista. Exit 101 at Lynn Road\, drive southwest 5.5 miles and turn left under the stone and timber archway. Drive in all the way\, past two smaller lots\, to the lot nearest the vault toilets and EV chargers. Google Maps does not provide accurate directions. \nThe hike will be a series of low ups & downs. The most significant climb will be mid-hike\, followed by more gentle changes. \nPlease review the revised guidelines to participate in our hikes. We are requiring proof of vaccination to join a hike. \nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nProof of vaccination required\nDon’t show up unless you’re on the “Attending” list\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\nNo dogs on this or any other Weekday Trailblazers hikes\nAll participants must be 18 or older\, or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\n\nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you are taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. \nIf you choose to sign up for this or any Weekday Trailblazers Meetup event\, you are releasing the Weekday Trailblazers Meetup Group\, its organizers\, and sponsors from all liability in case of possible injuries. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. You agree that you can navigate back to your transportation by yourself\, and agree to do so if you fall behind and lose track of the main body of hikers.

SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 mi\, 500′ gain\, beginner\nEasier option: 1.5 mi\, 125′ gain\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop\, (the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. \nWe’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. After about 0.2 miles\, there will be a split. We can go either way because they rejoin after about 100 yards\, but for this route\, we’ll go left. \nAfter another half mile\, the route makes a turn to the right. Those that want the super-easy route should continue straight for 100 yards to a log\, where they can wait about 45 min for the rest of us to return for the social event. \nThe rest of the group will follow the trail to the right and continue for about 1.2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, travel about 20 yards west\, and head back in on a different trail. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll reconnect with the original trail for the return. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 yards\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event snack and beverage share. \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the left and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings on the return\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. In general\, it won’t matter if you choose incorrectly from this point because all the splits end up going the same way. Click HERE for route. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat \nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac \nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \nDirections:\nLimekiln Canyon Trail\nPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \nFrom the 118\nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.\nLeft (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.\nTrailhead on the right (north).\nPark on either side of the street. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\nElevation Gain: 500′\nDifficulty: Easy\nPace: 2.5 mph\nDogs: Yes\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No\nParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.\nTrail: Varied. Good condition. \nWhat to Bring: \nSnacks and/or beverages to share\n1-2 liters of water.\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:Fire Lookout Tower - Slide Mountain
DESCRIPTION:*** Safety Note: Rain or Extreme Heat at trailhead cancels hikes \nSlide Mountain Fire Lookout Tower (4\,631′)\, overlooking Pyramid Lake \nDistance: ~ 12 miles total\, RT – Out and back style \nGain: ~2400′ \nHiking Time: 5.5 hours \nRATING: Strenuous (mainly for the overall Longer Distance and the 1340′ Gain over 2 mile section). Definitely not one for Beginners! You need to be hiking regularly to enjoy this one. \nDescription: Our day starts and ends with a ~ 1.5 mile flat hike (3 of the 12 mile total) along the now abandoned Route 99 (Golden State Highway)\, the predecessor to the 5 Hwy. We follow Piru Creek\, a Native California Fishery and Wild and Scenic River\, until we reach the actual trailhead (a white gate on the left) . From the trailhead\, we catch our first glimpse of the lookout tower\, 2400′ above. \nNext comes a 1340′ “butt kicker”\, as we start from the trailhead up the steepest part of the hike (for ~ 2 miles with some service road switchbacks ). We eventually reach the saddle and can pause to enjoy a panoramic view across the Piru creek area and the Sespe Wilderness to the West. \nAfter catching our breath\, it’s another ~ 2 miles and 1060′ to the peak via a series of shallow switchbacks on the East side of the mountain\, and more on the West side\, gradually approaching the peak. Eventually the tower comes into view and after rounding a bend\, we break out at the summit and an incredible view of Pyramid Lake below.\nThen its time to enjoy a snack/ lunch and the 360 degree view. From here\, if it is clear\, we can see just about every major peak around the Northern LA area. \nMeet your leader:\nAt 7:45AM in front of the white gate near Frenchman’s Flat Campground\n( 34.616492\, -118.743782 ); we head up the old highway at 8:00AM sharp. \nDirections from SCV:\nGo north on the I-5\, past Castaic and exit at Templin Hwy\, Exit # 183. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp\, go under the freeway to a T junction\, then turn right. Follow this bumpy 2 lane road (Old Hwy 99) for 5 miles until it ends at a white forest service gate where there is parking (this is Frenchman’s Flat Camping area). Display your Adventure Pass in your windshield. There are bathrooms at this trailhead. \nBring:\nA snack/lunch\, water (3 liters is recommended)\, including 1L electrolytes if it is a hot day\, sunscreen\, hat\, hiking poles if you have them. \n!!! Wear layered clothing and pack a windbreaker as it may turn windy / cold at the top. Check weather forecast. Good boots with tread are a given. \nAdventure Pass: YES. Required for parking in the Angeles National Forest. 1/car for those who drive. These can be obtained at any BIG 5 Sporting Goods store; $5 for a day pass\, $30 for a year pass. \nDogs: OK \, if on leash and well behaved. Please keep the distance\, lack of shade\, and your dog’s stamina in mind. \nLeader(s): Chris Stratford

We’re currently building stairs on the trail….a fun thing to do\, and you can see results in one day! \nTHIS IS NOT A HIKE\, but you will be among some of the most spectacular scenery near SCV. The trail is still there but it needs to be cleared of weeds and widened. \nWe will show you how to make/ maintain a trail. Get that special feeling of accomplishment as you work with other volunteers to complete manageable small outdoor projects (Trimming\, trail brushing and stashing trimmings\, building stairs). There are both easy and harder jobs. Heat\, severe cold\, wind\, rain\, snow\, etc will cancel the work day\, or cut it short. \nPLEASE only RSVP “Yes” only if you can make it. \nMeet At:\nGoogle Latitude/Longitude coordinates 34.360824\, -118.391941. We meet at Sand Canyon Road and 3N17 white gate. \nDirections to Meeting Spot (White Gate for 3N17)/Santa Clara Divide Road.\nTake the I-5 to the SR-14 North. Exit at Sand Canyon\, turn right (South/East). Go all the way past all the houses\, Placerita Canyon. Continue going straight. Enter the Angeles National Forest/San Gabriel National Monument\, and continue up!up!up! Sand Canyon Road until you see a heart shaped memorial on the right side. Shortly after this you will see a small brown sign “Santa Clara Divide Road”. The sign is on the right\, and the road is on the left. Turn left onto this road. Dianne will meet you there\, in front of the white gate. Dianne will caravan you and your car to the trail head\, 4 miles beyond the gate. \nMeeting Time:\nWe will meet at 7:45AM and leave for the trail head no later than 8:00AM SHARP. TP (there are no bathrooms)\, strong garden GLOVES (suede leather type recommended) \, sunscreen\, a cooling towel\, sun hat\, bandana if it is hot. Bring a mask if you cannot maintain social distancing. (A mask will also keep dust off of your face while working) \nDo Not Bring:\nDogs\, as they get bored. Also\, it would not be safe to bring young children (due to sharp tools and trail is narrow in places). Leave your garden tools at home. Dianne will bring all necessary tools for trail work. \nThank you for helping bring back this trail\, so we can all enjoy it. Be the first to hike on it when it is finished!! \nNote: It’s a GREAT workout too!!! \nLeader: Dianne

IT IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS AND ONLY FOR MODERATE HIKERS WHO USUALLY CAN STAY CLOSE TO THE MAIN GROUP. THIS IS FOR YOUR SAFETY\, WE DO NOT WANT TO LOSE YOU OUT THERE!! \nNOTE: Please visit the Dropbox link below to read our “Important Information” before answering “Yes” to the question below AND signing up for this hike. https://www.dropbox.com/s/e3wv87jx6mbttgg/Post%20COVID%20Rules%2007122021.docx?dl=0\nThank You \nDescription:\nThis hike has become an annual “butt kick-off” for the New Year season and is well known in the LA hiking community. It is in a geologically beautiful area\, only open at this time of year.\nOur loop route is not on a fixed trail but it does not include bouldering or very difficult topography. The hike begins with a steep climb (luckily when the day is coolest) up and over the first of three ridges. These afford some fabulous views of the entire area. After we climb down the 3rd ridge\, we lunch at the East end of Nightmare Gulch (say 30 mins). \nThe rest of the hike takes us down through the Gulch – high walls and spectacular sandstone rock formations\, mainly flat but with lots of off shoots\, so you need to stay with us. At the exit from the Gulch\, we cross an open area of desert for a final uphill climb to the parking area. There will be some variety in hiker ability and speed and long stretches between waypoints\, so expect to not feel crowded. \nSCV Caravan / Friends Carpool Meeting Spot – in NORTH Santa Clarita Valley (SCV):\nWe do not organize carpools however\, if you want to carpool\, we suggest you message hikers/ close friends who you already know well and trust from a COVID perspective. A convenient place to meet on the way is:\nOutside STARBUCKS (16548 Soledad Canyon Rd\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387)\, in the SaAND CANYON/ Soledad Canyon Road junction VONs strip mall parking lot\, off the 14 Hwy.\nTHIS IS NOT A CHC ORGANIZED CARPOOL \n!!! 7:15AM SHARP CARAVAN departure to the trailhead (no exceptions). The total drive is ~ 85 miles one way\, ~ 90 minutes. \nMojave (alternate) Caravan Meeting place (For convenience of those who live in Lancaster\, Antelope Valley\, etc.): If you want to drive to the trailhead with “the gang”\, we will be stopping briefly for a potty break/ McMuffin at the McDonalds on the corner of 14 HWY at Mojave – Barstow Hwy at 8:00AM. We leave from McD’s at ~8:15AM\, it is only 26.5miles from the trailhead. \nMEET LEADER AT TRAILHEAD ( 35.377332\, -117.980609 ):\nMeet at the Red Rock North Parking Lot (dirt pad on East side of Hwy 14)\, ¾ mile north of where Red Rock Canyon S.P. / Abbot Road\, joins Hwy 14 . \n!!!!! Be at the trailhead at 9:00AM\, so we can depart up the trail at 9:15AM SHARP.\nWe hope to be back at the trailhead by 3:45PM to return to Santa Clarita before 5:30PM. \nWEAR: Expect cold windy weather; hike will take us to 3\,000 ft. Likely to be colder and windy regardless. Dress in layers – you can always remove something if you get too hot. You can always leave a “just in case” jacket in your car\, if the weather looks better than expected.\nWe recommend winter hat/ scarf\, GLOVES!!\, a WINDPROOF outer layer\, sunglasses\, sunscreen\, hiking shoes/ boots with thread. \nFORECAST: Check it and we will also provide an updated forecast in Comments\, closer to hike day. \nBRING: Lunch / snack\, maybe a thermos of coffee\, lots of water (2+ liters)\, CAMERA\, hiking poles highly recommended for those ridges. \nLeaders’ Notes: No bathrooms at trailhead.\nAdventure Pass: Not required. \nDogs and Kids: Not encouraged. Message Leader if you want to bring either. \nLeader(s): Paul H

SUMMARY:DAGGER FLAT TRAIL RECONSTRUCTION - Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:******** THIS IS NOT A HIKE ***********\n*** RAIN\, SNOW OR EXCESS HEAT AT WORK SITE WILL CANCEL EVENT ** \nJoin Dianne for some trail clean up of the DAGGER FLAT TRAIL – No experience required! Please be on time\, as we lock the gate behind us when we leave the gate. \nBring:\nBoots\, plenty of WATER\, electrolytes\, and snacks\, a sack lunch.

SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: Upper Zuma Falls
DESCRIPTION:I normally reserve this hike for the HWD VIPs\, but this month I am inviting all HWD members. VIPs are members that have made a donation or assisted with trail work. For more info see https://www.hikingwithdean.com/vip-circle/ \nWe will begin by hiking northwest on the Backbone Trail to Upper Zuma Canyon. Our first stop will be Newton Canyon Falls\, a beautiful waterfall in a lush\, forested grotto with moss-covered rocks. \nNewton Falls is just the appetizer. Our main course will be Upper Zuma Falls. While on the main trail it can be seen from the distance. However\, back in 2010\, we did an exploratory hike and found a path to the base of the falls. Although we will be hiking off the main trail to get to the falls\, the way has become popular and is now relatively clear of obstacles. \nAfter visiting the falls\, we’ll return to the trail and continue to Zuma-Trancas Ridge\, turn north\, and take my (still) secret trail I found in 2011 to to the top of the falls. We’ll take a snack break by the pool at the top of the falls. \nBring the usual stuff\, but most importantly\, bring a sense of adventure! Wear long pants. \nHIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1\,350 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE \nDirections\nNote: Parking is limited. Please use use Kanan Park and Ride for carpooling: 29166 Roadside Dr\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301 \nIMPORTANT \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. \nBring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per our ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER and Section 6.2 of the Meetup.com Terms of Service.

SUMMARY:NEW Lollipop: PCT- Spruce Draw - to Lake Hughes Truck Trail - PCT
DESCRIPTION:NEW Lollipop: PCT to Spruce Draw then hiking the Leona Divide Fire Rd west to the intersection of Lake Hughes Truck Trail; We will take a snack break at the Intersection then return counter-clock wise hiking east on the PCT back to our cars on San Francisquito Cyn Rd. \nDISTANCE / GAIN:\n~ 8.5 miles Round Trip / 1732′ gain. \nRATING: Moderate +\nYou need to be in good physical condition to complete these\, due to some reasonably significant gain over a short distance (mainly near the start). \nHike duration: ~ 4 hours total. \nMeet: At the trailhead at 8:15 AM for a 8:30 AM start up the trail. \nDescription: \nThis is a great local hike on a well maintained portion of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) single track\, only 25 minutes from the SCV! This hike area is popular due to its remote nature and rapid access to some great views of surrounding areas including the Mohave desert\, Lancaster\, Martindale Ridge and the distant Tehachapi Mtns. \nWe start near Green Valley Ranger station using the PCT heading North. We will cross the fire road leading up to Grass Mtn\, stop briefly if it is clear to enjoy the views of the Mojave desert and Tehachapi.\nWe will stay on the PCT and continue North. This is a beautiful shady portion of the PCT that takes us to remote Spruce Draw canyon then on to the Fire Rd returning back via the PCT. \nNote: The return leg on the PCT has some loose rocks and minor washouts from the recent rains so please wear boots with good treads. \nDirections to the trail head (34.634482\, -118.390112):\nThe trailhead is where the PCT crosses San Francisquito Canyon Road\, using these numbers in Google\, or WAZE. \nLeader’s note: No restrooms at trailhead\, plenty of bushes. There is a bathroom in the gas station on corner of San Francisquito Cyn Rd. and Spunky Cyn Rd. in Green Valley. \nDirections from Copper Hill Dr\, in SCV to trail head:\nFind the light that is the intersection of San Francisquito Canyon Road and Copper Hill Dr. Reset your odometer here – the trailhead is 17.7 miles (about 25 mins.) from this light. When you arrive in Green Valley\, at Stop sign\, go straight through intersection on San Francisquito Cyn Rd. The Ranger station is on the left\, 2 minutes later. The trailhead\, where the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) crosses San Francisquito\, is 0.2 miles beyond that – look for PCT signs and parked cars. Park on the gravel shoulder\, on either side\, near where the PCT crosses the road – this is our “trail head”. \nHike Starting Place/ Time: (34.634482\, -118.390112) \nAdventure pass: Not required. \nBRING: Hiking poles are helpful for the hills. Bring a snack and at least 2L water and 1L Gatorade/ Salt sticks; camera\, cap and sunscreen. Dress in layers as it can be windy and chilly in the shady areas. \nLeader: Nancy Harrison
