SUMMARY:First Hike of Year: Tri Peaks via Mishe Mokwa Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first hike of 2020 at the Circle X Ranch. The Mishe Mokwa Trail is known as the most beautiful trail in the Santa Monica Mountains. Round trip distance is 7.5 miles with a net elevation gain of 1000 feet (about 1700 total). \nDuring Wednesday’s hike we will be visiting 2 Earthcaches: Sandstone Peak and Inspiration Point \nSandstone Peak\, the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3\,111 feet\, is not sandstone at all. Its actually made of igneous rock formed 15 million years ago during the Conejo Volcanics. During this time Sandstone Peak grew to 10\,000 feet! After millions of years of erosion we are now left with its ruddy-colored core. From a distance its color makes it look like sandstone\, hence the name Sandstone Peak. \nAt Inspiration Point we will see more evidence of how the Santa Monica Mountains were formed. From here\, a view of Los Angeles\, Oxnard Plain\, and the Valleys of Southern California will reveal the evolution of the Farallon Plate subduction zone that created the transverse mountain range known as the Santa Monica Mountains. The Channel Islands\, which were created at the same time and by the same process that created the Santa Monica Mountains\, can be seen from here too. \nWe’ll take a side trip to Tri-Peaks\, a stack of house-sized volcanic boulders. We’ll take our main break here and explore the fascinating slots and caves beneath the giant boulders. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is required. No more than than 10 cars shall be part of the group. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & Canwood and Kanan & Roadside. The corner of Ventura and Topanga in Ralph’s parking lot is a good meeting spot also\n2. All hikers must stay on established trails\n3. No use of flour or chalk to mark trails.\n4. Yerba Buena is very curvy so drive carefully. \nSan Fernando Valley/Calabasas: \nFrom points east of Westlake Village\, exit 101 at Kanan and go south to Mulholland. Turn west (right) to Yerba Buena 2 mi. \nFrom the 101: \nExit and turn south at CA-23 (Westlake Blvd) \nContinue to follow CA-23 south 5.2 mi. Continue straight toward Mulholland Hwy West \nAfter a couple more miles\, turn right at stop sign and continue west on Mulholland Hwy 0.4 mi \nTurn right at Little Sycamore Canyon Rd 1.9 mi \nSlight left at Yerba Buena Rd 2 mi \n[Overflow parking: Sandstone Peak 0.75 farther down\, Circle X Ranch 1.75 miles down toward PCH]

SUMMARY:Happy Camp Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:The last time we were here was January 18\, 2011\, and so here we are again. \nHappy Camp Canyon Park\, north of Moorpark in the Santa Susana Mountains\, was home to several Chumash Indian groups. Later\, it was part of the immense Strathearn Ranch\, founded by a pioneer Simi Valley family. They ran cattle on the land and enjoyed family vacations in the back part of the canyon. \nThe 3\,000 acre park has retained its natural setting and is an important wildlife corridor linking the Simi Hills with the Santa Susana Mountains. It is a lush riparian oak woodland with an intermittant stream. The canyon is sheltered by Oak Ridge to the north and Big Mountain to the south. \nThis loop hike will follow the Happy Camp Trail through the interior of the park on an abandoned ranch road. The trail winds through open grasslands and the gorgeous stream-fed forested canyon. Wildlife include rabbits\, bobcats and Golden Eagles. \nHighlights along the way: \n-oyster and clam rich shales\n-yellow and red rock outcroppings – formed from underground oil fires\n-acorn woodpeckers\n-ranch artifacts \nHike is strenuous at 11 miles and 1850 ft total ascent \nDirections to trail head \nFrom the 118 Fwy in Simi or the 101/23 Fwys in Thousand Oaks\, take the E Los Angeles Ave/23 North exit. Go west 1 mile to Moorpark Av (Hwy 23) and turn right (north). Proceed north 2.6 miles on Hwy 23 (name will change to Walnut Canyon Rd) until you come to a bend in the road. Don’t take the bend — Go straight onto Happy Camp Rd and then an immediate right on Broadway Rd. Park in lot at the east end of the road. \nLast time I was here there was a $5 parking fee in official lot\, but some free parking outside the official lot on street.

SUMMARY:Adventure Hike: The Forgotten Trails of Cheeseboro & Las Virgenes Canyons
DESCRIPTION:Las Virgenes and Cheeseboro Canyons like you have never seen them before!\nThis adventure hike arose from an exploratory I did in April 2010. We’ll hike along forgotten ranch roads and use trails. It will include a hike over the eastern ridge of Cheeseboro Canyon and to the Baleen Wall along a forgotten and overgrown trail. We’ll then descend into Upper Las Virgenes Canyon by way of a vanished ranch road (This segment is sure to be very overgrown. Be prepared for a little bushwhacking). SUMMARY:Pre-Game Hike: Calabasas Peak Without the Fireroads
DESCRIPTION:Don’t forget to join our FB group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \nOur 5th Annual Super Bowl Pre-Game Hike is perfect. Short enough to get you home on time and prepare for parties and kickoff\, yet big on beauty and adventure. \n \nOur destination is a familiar one but on this trek we’ll stay off the fire and service roads that everyone else uses. \nWe’ll begin at the Secret Trail (aka the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail) and wind our way through shaded ravines\, dense chaparral and sandstone outcrops until we reach Calabasas Peak Motorway. Here we throw away the hiking book (I lose so many books this way) and instead of taking the Motorway to Calabasas Peak\, we’ll go off-trail along some use trails. SUMMARY:La Jolla Valley - Chumash - Ray Miller Loop
DESCRIPTION:Details\nJoin us and the small animals and birds of La Jolla Canyon on this loop hike with panoramic views of coastline and The Channel Islands. Flower blooms in the spring are phenomenal. One of the the main attractions are large swaths of native California grassland — some of the last remaining unspoiled areas in the state. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]6[/asa2_collection] \nBecause of the continued closure of the canyon trail up to the waterfall we are going to do this in a special way. We’ll meet on PCH at the entrance to the canyon and walk 2 miles down the ocean side of scenic PCH to the Chumash Trail. Several years ago PCH flooded out and broke up and had to be realigned — we’ll walk along the old broken PCH. \n  \n \nAlong the way we’ll have the opportunity to come face to face with Mugu Rock! You’ve seen it in the distance\, now you will be able to touch it. \n \nConsider the walk along PCH a warmup to the strenuous Chumash Trail. The Chumash trail is an ancient trail which leads from the Pacific Ocean to La Jolla Valley. It was used by the Chumash 7000 years ago\, and believed to be the oldest trail still in continuous use in the Santa Monica Mountains. \nThis trail is very strenuous with almost 1\,000 feet gain in only 0.6 miles. But the views from the top are spectacular \n \n  \nAfter we climb the Chumsh Trail we’ll swing around the Pt Mugu Peak Trail and bag Mugu Peak. We’ll take a group photo at the flag pole. Every year on 9/11\, since 2002\, chief selects from the Naval Base Ventura County replace the flag on Mugu Peak. The previous flag is retired in a ceremony on the base. \nHere we are a couple years back \n \n  \nAfter descending the peak we’ll head into the grasslands of La Jolla Valley \n \nWe’ll be taking our break at the hike-in campsite. There is a fancy outhouse there. One of the highlights along the way is this pond. Will there be water this week? Naw. \n \nAfter our lunch break we’ll hike along the ridge separating Sycamore Canyon and La Jolla Canyon. SUMMARY:Presidents' Day Hike at the Old Reagan Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Classic! \nDuring the 1950s\, when Ronald Reagan hosted TV’s “Death Valley Days\,” he wanted a more rural retreat than his home in Pacific Palisades. So he bought a 305-acre ranch in the hills of Malibu as a place to raise thoroughbred horses and dubbed it “Yearling Row.” \n \nThe site was owned by President Reagan between 1957 and 1967\, before he was elected Governor of California. Prior to the Woolsey fire\, the Reagan Ranch property still had the original barn and stables\, which were used as the park maintenance facility. \nTrails loop through rolling meadowlands and grand old oaks and connect with the main part of the state park. We’ll use a combination of trails — Yearling\, Deer Leg\, Lookout\, Crags Road and Cage Canyon — to explore Reagan Country and the heart of the park. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]6[/asa2_collection] \nWe’ll also be visiting the exterior set for the long-running television show M*A*S*H. SUMMARY:Devil Canyon & Deerlake Highlands Adventure Hike
DESCRIPTION:I am calling this an “adventure hike” due to ongoing housing development in the area. There might be a little bushwhacking and some creeking. \nWe’ll be hiking on a couple trails we had cleaned up earlier this year. \nOur loop hike begins at the north end of Canoga Avenue and meanders north through Chatsworth’s Deer Lake Highlands and a network of of equestrian trails. From above the highlands we will descend into Echo Canyon creating a loop with Devils Canyon. Devils Canyon with it’s spectacular rock formations created 80 million years ago in a marine environment makes for a haunting yet beautiful hike. SUMMARY:VIP Hike: Sullivan's Secrets
DESCRIPTION:A loop hike along both sides of the eastern ridge of Sullivan Canyon. \nDetails\nThe hike down Sullivan Canyon parallels a seasonal creek through a shady canyon. Alive with the singing of birds\, this hike sounds and feels like an aviary housed within huge stands of sycamore\, oak\, and willow trees. We’ll be hiking on both the Sullivan side and the Mandeville side of the eastern ridge dividing the two canyons. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]6[/asa2_collection] \nThis will be a brand new custom hike with unknown mileage and total ascent. I estimate around 8 miles with 2000+ ft total ascent. \nAt the beginning of hike we will explore a trail I haven’t seen in a few years and hope its still passable. The hike will include a steep ascent and an equally steep descent on trails that are probably unknown to the veteran Sullivan Canyon hiker. Trekking poles are recommended.
