SUMMARY:V.I.P. Hike: Mountaineer's Route to Saddle Peak and Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:High above central Malibu is Saddle Peak\, just east of Malibu Canyon\, one of the highest points in the Santa Monica Mountains at 2\,805 feet. Up here you are literally in the sky\, often above the clouds over Malibu. On a clear day\, facing south\, you can see a vast stretch of the Pacific coast\, Catalina and Channel Islands miles out in the water. If facing north\, you can see the inland valleys of the Malibu Creek watershed or east toward Calabasas and the San Fernando Valley. On a cloudy day\, you look down on the cloud tops as if in an airplane. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]6[/asa2_collection] \nThe climb up Topanga Ridge will be the toughest part of getting there. It is a knife-edge ridge that will require some minor bouldering/scrambling (0.5 – 1.0). There is a steep 200′ sandstone slab that serves as an optional shortcut for the heartier hiker with some derring-do. At the top of the ridge\, and 1200 ft higher than the parking lot\, is the old and abondoned Topanga Fire Lookout. We will take a short break here and enjoy the stupefying views of the San Fernando Valley\, LA Basin\, Santa Monica Bay and even San Gorgonio Pass 100 miles away. From here we will connect up with the Backbone Trail and hike up to Saddle Peak and take another break on the rock formations. We will complete the loop by descending Saddle Peak via the Cold Creek Preserve and upper Stunt High trail. \nHike is about 8 miles with 2000 ft total ascent \nSlide show from previous hikes\n[av_video src=’https://youtu.be/VJn9GQZ4KGg’ mobile_image=” attachment=” attachment_size=” format=’16-9′ width=’16’ height=’9′ conditional_play=” av_uid=’av-ws6onb’ id=” custom_class=”] \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is rated DIFFICULT due to terrain. SUMMARY:🚘 Back to the Future Hike at China Flat (& Simi Peak) - Lunch at Lamppost Pizza
DESCRIPTION:On this one\, Marty McFly will be taking us to China Flat\, the 1885 location of the Seamus McFly farm\, Boothill Cemetary and the Delgado Mine. Seamus was/is/will-be Marty’s great-great-grandfather. DeLoreans are no longer allowed on the trail so this will be a little strenuous. \nWe’re heading back to the future in more ways than one. We did this hike almost a year ago\, just after the Woolsey fire. You can view those pics here: It will be interesting to see the recovery progress. \nThe trail to China Flat is a difficult one\, but makes an excellent introduction to the Simi Hills\, with its awesome sandstone skyscrapers towering over flatland neighborhoods. The “flat” in China Flat is a splendid plateau carpeted with emerald green grass and covered by oak savannas. \nWe’ll do a loop around China Flat\, visit a vernal pond and poke around some artifacts artifacts from a bygone era. Along the way we will ascend to Simi Peak\, the highest peak in the Simi Hills at 2\,405 ft. \nHere are photos from January 2019\n \nHike will be a loop of appx. 8.5 miles with about 2200′ total ascent \nPOST HIKE LUNCH\nLamppost Pizza\n1145 Lindero Canyon rd.\nWestlake Village\, CA 91362\n(Corner of Lindero and Kanan) \nDIRECTIONS\nFrom U.S. 101 in Agoura\, exit on Kanan Road and drive north three miles to Hollytree Drive. Turn right\, then left into Oak Canyon Community Park. After entering park make an immediate left into the first parking lot. We will meet by the pond. If the lot is full\, follow the park access road to the main parking area further up the road and walk across park back to pond.

SUMMARY:Last Hike of the Year: Grasslands Trail to Century Lake & the Rock Pool
DESCRIPTION:Join us in popular Malibu Creek State Park for the last hike of 2019. We’ll start on the Grasslands Trail off of Mulholland Hwy and head south on a scenic hike over rolling hills and through open fields of grain. \n[asa2_collection tpl=”Flat_box_horizontal” orderby=”rand” show_features=”no” show_description=”no” limit=”1″]6[/asa2_collection] \nOur first destination is the Rock Pool\, a placid stretch of water framed by volcanic cliffs. Cliff divers and rock climbers will provide the entertainment. This generically wild-looking site has served as a backdrop for outdoor sequences filmed for Planet of the Apes\, South Pacific\, Tarzan\, Swiss Family Robinson\, and many other productions. \nNext\, we’ll head for the shaded shores of Century Lake. Ducks\, coots\, and herons frequent the lake\, their squalling and callings reverberating off the weathered\, honeycombed cliffs rising from the lake’s far shore. Redwing blackbirds flit among the cattails and rushes. The famous diving scene from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed here. \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is about 5 miles with about 800 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. SUMMARY:First Hike of Year: Tri Peaks via Mishe Mokwa Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first hike of 2020 at the Circle X Ranch. The Mishe Mokwa Trail is known as the most beautiful trail in the Santa Monica Mountains. Round trip distance is 7.5 miles with a net elevation gain of 1000 feet (about 1700 total). \nDuring Wednesday’s hike we will be visiting 2 Earthcaches: Sandstone Peak and Inspiration Point \nSandstone Peak\, the highest peak in the Santa Monica Mountains at 3\,111 feet\, is not sandstone at all. Its actually made of igneous rock formed 15 million years ago during the Conejo Volcanics. During this time Sandstone Peak grew to 10\,000 feet! After millions of years of erosion we are now left with its ruddy-colored core. From a distance its color makes it look like sandstone\, hence the name Sandstone Peak. \nAt Inspiration Point we will see more evidence of how the Santa Monica Mountains were formed. From here\, a view of Los Angeles\, Oxnard Plain\, and the Valleys of Southern California will reveal the evolution of the Farallon Plate subduction zone that created the transverse mountain range known as the Santa Monica Mountains. The Channel Islands\, which were created at the same time and by the same process that created the Santa Monica Mountains\, can be seen from here too. \nWe’ll take a side trip to Tri-Peaks\, a stack of house-sized volcanic boulders. We’ll take our main break here and explore the fascinating slots and caves beneath the giant boulders. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is required. No more than than 10 cars shall be part of the group. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & Canwood and Kanan & Roadside. The corner of Ventura and Topanga in Ralph’s parking lot is a good meeting spot also\n2. All hikers must stay on established trails\n3. No use of flour or chalk to mark trails.\n4. Practice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints \nDirections to Trailhead: \nUse this link for Google Map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=embed&saddr=34.114167\,-118.91814&daddr=&hl=en&geocode=&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=0&sz=17&sll=34.114292\,-118.919857&sspn=0.003642\,0.006866&ie=UTF8&ll=34.112053\,-118.927388&spn=0.012436\,0.023603&z=15) \nPark at the Mishe Mokwa trailhead. \nMishe Mokwa Trailhead parking lot is on the both sides of Yerba Buena Rd\, 3.75 miles west of Mulholland or 7.2 miles north of PCH. Yerba Buena is very curvy so drive carefully. \nSan Fernando Valley/Calabasas: \nFrom points east of Westlake Village\, exit 101 at Kanan and go south to Mulholland. Turn west (right) to Yerba Buena 2 mi. \nFrom the 101: \nExit and turn south at CA-23 (Westlake Blvd) \nContinue to follow CA-23 south 5.2 mi. Continue straight toward Mulholland Hwy West \nAfter a couple more miles\, turn right at stop sign and continue west on Mulholland Hwy 0.4 mi \nTurn right at Little Sycamore Canyon Rd 1.9 mi \nSlight left at Yerba Buena Rd 2 mi \n[Overflow parking: Sandstone Peak 0.75 farther down\, Circle X Ranch 1.75 miles down toward PCH]
