SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. SUMMARY:Los Robles/Moorpark Trail
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: \nThis is a second (and slower) hike for Tuesday\, we will see how much it rains this weekend\, but it should be okay. We will take this Los Robles trail with lots of trees and hopefully no mud. \nThis is a loop of about 4.5 miles with about 800′ of total elevation gain\, spread out nicely\, with a little bonus loop through Oak Creek Canyon. \n“Robles” is Spanish for oaks\, and we’ll see plenty of them on this beautiful\, relaxing hike. \nTrailhead Directions: From the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn south on Moorpark Road. SUMMARY:Pre-turkey trot~Intermediate 8 mile hike~RayMiller Trail and Overlook Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a pre-turkey trot up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll turn back around the Guadalasca Trail intersection. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1500’ gain on this 8 mile adventure. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. Most of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. Mosquito season should be over so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). SUMMARY:Rocky Peak Modified - Easy Intermediate or Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\n2 miles\, 550′\, Fit Beginner \nThis is a modified version of the famous Rocky Peak hike. It gives those that want something easier\, a chance to climb one of the most well known trails in Simi Valley. \nIt contains beautiful sandstone formations throughout the hike and there are fantastic views of the valleys. There is really no way to get lost because there are no junctions. If one chooses\, they can turn around and return to the beginning at any point during this climb. \nThe beginning contains continuous and somewhat steep incline of about 1000 steps. It’s a fire road\, so it’s not steeper than a truck can climb. Still\, beginners will find this short climb to be exhausting. There is nothing wrong with taking short breaks and doing it slowly\, as there will be plenty of time. \nAfter 1 mile\, we’ll arrive at the Hummingbird trail and bench. This is where we’ll have a social event. Those that have had enough\, should wait for 30-45 min. unltil the others that went further\, return\, and can explore the various rock formations there: at least two caves along the edge of the trail within a few hundred feet. \nAdditional Segment\nThose that want something extra will continue for 1 more mile\, and just after the final and steep ascent to the top\, there will be a junction off to the right. They’ll turn around and return to the bench. Those proceeding with this segment can do all or part of it. \nAt the bench\, we’ll share snacks and beverages\, enjoy the views\, and engage in social interaction for about a hour before returning the way we came. \nIt can get windy and cool in the evening\, so I would recommend bringing something light to put on. \nInteresting Notes:\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:OPT OUTSIDE WITH WTC! Big Cienega-Mt. Islip (8250')-Windy Gap Loop Hike
DESCRIPTION:OPT OUTSIDE WITH WTC! Big Cienega-Mt. Islip (8250′)-Windy Gap Loop. Hike to the Angeles high country peak Mt. Islip from Crystal Lake Campground via the Big Cienega Trail. We’ll make a loop out of it by returning over Windy Gap. Mt. Islip was named for Canadian prospector George Islip and once had a lookout tower and stone cabin on its summit. The tower footings and cabin walls are still there. This moderate hike is 7.2 miles with 2400 feet of gain. Bring hiking footwear\, at least two liters of water\, lunch\, snacks\, hat\, sunblock and layers. A day pass ($5) or National Forest Adventure Pass is required to park at the trailhead. Leaders will provide an overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC)\, which begins January 2024 (www.wildernesstravelcourse.org). Subjects include safe mountain travel\, map & compass and wilderness first aid. This backcountry outing requires a completed Local Outing Medical Form to be reviewed by the Leader prior to the hike. SUMMARY:Post-Thanksgiving hike: Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. This is where we will meet. We will head up the Borrego Trail until we get to Mustard Road. Here we will turn right. Then we will get onto the Billy Goat Trail. Once that ends\, we will turn right to go on Whiting Spur Road. When we get down to Four Corners\, we will head back on Mustard Road to Borrego Canyon. SUMMARY:Chumash Trail to Rocky Peak/Triangle
DESCRIPTION:Today we will hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley\, and turn left at the top to the “Triangle” as Barbara calls it. The hike will be an out and back\, and will be 7.7 miles with 1600 ft gain. It’s a nice mostly single track trail during the first climb with pretty views of the hills around. The final mile or so to the turn-around is fire-road. \nWe recommend you use poles as the Chumash Trail has some rocks on it. \nDirections: put “Chumash Park and Trail” into your chosen map service. We will park on Flanagan Drive or thereabout. SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Tar Pits - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.4 miles\, 1050′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nThis hike is one of the most beautiful hikes in Simi Valley. There are 3 extended inclines\, about 1000 steps each\, on fire road. They are not especially steep\, but they do continue for some time\, which is why it is rated “Easy Intermediate.” There are also several small hills of 100 steps or less. \nThe extended inclines will get the blood pumping during this lollipop hike. We’ll be moving through the famous Tapo Canyon and visiting natural tar pits that bubble up from the ground. \nThe first pit is really a puddle that looks like someone spilled a couple 55-gallon drums of tar that was later contained using a spill rope. The next two are a little larger\, again\, contained by spill ropes to keep the sticky black tar from getting on the trail. You will see dinosaurs and sometimes body parts\, and I’m not kidding. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll start on a leisurely stroll for about 0.6 miles\, followed by a steady climb for the next mile\, completing the first extended incline. \nWe’ll turn left at the junction\, climb a small hill of a couple hundred steps\, and then head down for 1.5 miles. \nWe’ll make a right turn down a smaller trail and go for about 100 yards until we reach the tar pits. After looking around for a bit\, we’ll head back\, and after 0.25 miles\, we’ll come to another junction where we will stop and share snacks and beverages. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn left and there will be a steady climb for about 3/4 of a mile to another junction. We’ll turn left again and return down for about 1.4 miles to complete the lollipop. \nEasy option (no host): 3 miles\, 300′ gain.\nPark at 5079 Westwood St\, Simi Valley\, CA 93063. Follow Cottonwood Dr/Yosemite Ave south (down) 1000′ to the trailhead. Enter and turn immediately left. After 350′\, there is a split. It doesn’t matter which you take. The right (upper) is single-track\, the left (lower) is fire road. After ½ mile\, the two trails merge into the fire road. After 600′\, you arrive at the tar pits. Keep going another 600′\, left at the dead end\, and 1/3rd mile to the social event location. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Original!\nMany of you know Paramount Ranch for its Western Town filming set (destroyed by the Woolsey fire). But did you know that during the 1950s it was home to a world-class race track? The broken sections of asphalt that twist through the eucalyptus trees and around the old Western Town was in fact an official racecourse with international prestige! \nClick here for a cool video \nTrack History \nThe 2-mile Paramount Ranch Raceway opened for its first event over the weekend of August 18th and 19th 1956. Among the notable names competing were Dan Gurney\, Lance Reventlow\, Ritchie Ginther and Bob Bondurant\, who made up a more than 350-strong entry list of drivers across a variety of categories. \nIt was a narrow and twisting course with ups and downs. Due to many accidents and tragedies the track closed 7 races and 18 months later. After closure it was used for the next several years by Paramount for filming movies. \nMovie History \nThe track was used for filming many movies\, including 1957’s “Devil’s Hairpin”\, “Roadracers” (1959) and “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini” (1965). Perhaps the most famous depiction of the circuit on the big screen came during 1965’s ‘Spin Out‘\, notable for starring Elvis Presley. SUMMARY:Palo Comado to the Edge of China Flat - Gentler Friendly but not Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Palo Comado (“Burnt Stick” in Spanish) tells you a lot about the environs – frequently burned over by wildfires\, this was directly in the line of the Woolsey Fire but much of the vegetation has re-grown. \nThis is one of many routes from the Conejo Valley to China Flat. Except for one turn near the trailhead\, this gentle 900′ climb\, punctuated by a 100′ climb and descent just at the start\, is uninterrupted until we get up to the top\, where we’ll rest at the bench\, turn around\, and head back. \nThis is about 6 mile hike with about 1\,000′ of elevation gain. \nUPDATE: Please review the guidelines to participate in our morning hikes. SUMMARY:Happy Camp - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:Beginner\, 5 miles\, 500′ gain\nThis hike is entirely fire-road and is almost completely flat. Some of this trail is sandy\, so walking it at times can be more difficult. There are a lot of different interesting plants on this hike. \nFrom the trail head\, we walk along the fire road next to the golf course for 1.3 miles until making a left at a junction. \nPlease be advised that from that point on\, there is a no dogs allowed sign. At some point as we continue\, the ground will become very sandy. \nThe landscape will change from dry to green\, eventually coming to a spot where sometimes you can hear the water running along the left down in a canyon. We’ll stop there to share some [snacks\, beverages](https://www.dropbox.com/s/zlfjtt05uu2bhxn/Snack and Beverage Share.pdf?dl=0)\, and have a social event for 30-60 minutes\, before turning around to head back the way we came. Please bring snacks and/or beverages to share. \nInteresting Notes:\nYou will see several plants of note\, and if you are interested\, you can look them up before the hike. I’ll mention several\, and then fully describe a couple more: \nRussian Thistle\, Black Walnut\, Caterpillar Phacelia\, White Sage\, Yucca\, Bladder Pod. \nJimson Weed\nThe plant got its name from Jamestown\, because in 1676\, Jamestown\, VA soldiers ate this plant in their salad and became psychotic for 11 days. \nThe leaves and seeds are used to make medicine. Despite serious safety concerns\, jimson weed is used to treat asthma\, cough\, flu (influenza)\, swine flu\, and nerve diseases. Some people use it as a recreational drug to cause hallucinations and a heightened sense of well-being (euphoria). All parts of Datura plants contain dangerous levels of the tropane alkaloids atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine\, which are classified as deliriants\, or anticholinergics. \nThe risk of fatal overdose is high among uninformed users\, and many hospitalizations occur amongst recreational users who ingest the plant for its psychoactive effects. As much as a 5:1 variation can be found between plants. It contains chemicals such as atropine\, hyoscyamine\, and scopolamine. \nThese chemicals interfere with one of the chemical messengers (acetylcholine) in the brain and nerves. Ingesting only a few small seeds can result in serious poisoning and may be life-threatening. Ingesting even small amounts of the plant or seeds can result in confusion\, frightening hallucinations\, the inability to urinate or sweat\, overheating\, and a rapid heart rate. \nDepending on the amount ingested\, these troubling symptoms can last hours to many days\, and in some cases can lead to death. Touching he plant can cause dermatitis. \nCastor Bean\nOne of the most poisonous plants in the world. \nThe seeds contain ricin\, one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. Walter White made a poison cigarette by putting in ricin\, in the series Breaking Bad. \nThe symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days\, the victim usually recovers. The seed causes skin irritation at the contact point. It is said that just one seed can kill a child. \nIn 1978\, ricin was used to assassinate Georgi Markov in 1978\, a Bulgarian journalist who spoke out against the Bulgarian government. He was stabbed with the point of an umbrella while waiting at a bus stop near Waterloo Station in London. They found a perforated metallic pellet embedded in his leg that had presumably contained the ricin toxin. \nCastor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch - Wahoo's Parking Lot
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be about 5.4 miles total with 820 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe are starting at the parking lot at the Wahoo’s parking lot. We will take Live Oak Trail. This turns into Serrano Road which will take us to Serrano Cow Trail. At this part of the trail\, we usually see a ton of deer\, so cross your fingers! We will get on Sleepy Hollow Trail. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. Take a look at the Map Link in this posting to see what is described below! \nHERE IS THE TENTATIVE SCHEDULE (latest and most correct): \n(1) 10:30AM: Meet at the Downtown Ventura Public (free) Parking Structure: Exit the 101 on California Street and turn north. Turn right where California Street is closed to traffic and the Parking Structure will be on your left. We’ll meet in the alleyway on the north side of the Parking Structure by California Street. Lure’s Fish House and Ventura EBikes are nearby establishments. \n(2) 10:50AM: We’ll walk south on California Street\, jog left (east) on Harbor Blvd.\, then out onto the pier for a quick visit. \n(3) 11:30AM: Leaving the pier\, head straight north and take the Pedestrian Overpass over the 101 freeway\, then go north on S. Ash Street to Thompson Blvd. Turn left (west) on Thompson and then spend the next hour and a half at your choice(s) of Spencer Makenzie’s\, Leashless Brewing\, The Barrel House\, The Habit\, etc… \n*** PLAN TO BE BACK AT THE START BY 1:20PM!!! ***\nTiming for the next segment is somewhat critical…\nWe’ will depart for “The Ventura Cross” no later than 1:30PM! \n(4) 1:30PM (sharp): We’ll walk to the top of California Street\, jog right (east) on Poli Street\, then left to The Botanical Gardens Parking Lot where we’ll take the meandering dirt path up to Brakey Road. \nThere is an Admission Fee of $7 to hike up through the Botanical Gardens. If you’ve never done this\, I highly recommend it! \nALTERNATIVELY\, you can save your $7 by going left (West) on Poli from the top of California Street and taking Brakey Road up to The Ventura Cross from there. \nEither way\, at the top we’ll turn left (west) on Brakey Road and find our way to The Ventura Cross. \n(5) 2:15PM: We’ll depart The Cross. You can take Ferro Drive\, or some great dirt shortcuts that intersect Ferro Drive on the way back down to Poli Street\, or simply retrace the way you came up. \nWhichever route you take\, just keep heading toward the beach until you hit Main Street. \n(6) It will be nearly 3:00 by now and “The Ventura Walkabout” portion of the day concludes here. The Ventura Winter Wine Walk & Holiday Street Fair will once again return to beautiful Ventura on Saturday\, December 2\, 2023! \nThe Most Magical day in Ventura will kick off with the FREE Fiesta Street Fair from 12pm-8pm in Downtown Ventura from the Museum of Ventura County through the 600 block of Main Street with vendors and live entertainment. DESCRIPTION:Please join a beautiful hike in Upper Las Virgenes Preserve and Cheeseboro Canyon! \nWe’ll do my classic loop (a little different than the classic book version) and start at the northern end of Las Virgenes Rd\, traverse the Chesebro ridge trail past the Baleen Wall to Shepherd’s flat and then turn east along a beautiful less traveled trail back to the Las Virgenes trail. \nHike is about 9.5 miles with 1\,650 feet total ascent and is rated MEDIUM+ See the HWD Hike Rating Guide. \nDirections\nPark and meet at the north end of Las Virgenes Rd \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner 4.3 miles\, 480′ gain.\nEasier Option: 4 miles\, 230′ gain. \nWe walk a mostly flat section for 1.1 mi. to the 2nd junction. \nEasier option: Continue straight for 3/4 mi.\, left at the split\, right after another 500′\, arriving at some picnic tables on the right after another 750′. \nRegular route: Left\, heading up a switch back. Right at the top\, and continue for 3/4 mi.\, turning right where it ends. Head down to the bottom\, left at the split. After 750′\, we arrive at some picnic tables on the right. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. \nBlack sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nYellow Star Thistle\nThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing.
