SUMMARY:BKS - Switchback Hike - Mount Baden Powell O/B
DESCRIPTION:BKS ( Butt Kicker Series) Saturday July 15th\, 2023 – Vincent Gulch Divide to Mount Baden-Powell O/B \n******************************************************\n** Special Note on directions to the trailhead ** \nHighway 2 is still closed at Red Box.\nMake sure to take the route through Newhall via the northeast on CA-14 North and Pearblossom Hwy. See the map in the attached photos for details.\n******************************************************* \nHike: Meet at Vincent Gulch Divide trailhead at 7:15 A.M. Details below. \n***** Rain or extreme heat cancels all hikes***** \nDistance/ Gain: 7.8 miles total; 2\,800′ gain\, Out and Back style ( 40 X 2 Switchbacks!) \nRating: Moderate ++/ Strenuous (remember we will be at a higher altitude where the air is thinner) \nDescription: Picture this: you’re standing at the trailhead\, full of enthusiasm and optimism. The sun is shining\, the birds are chirping\, and you’re ready to conquer this mountain like any other BKS hike\, however Mount Baden Powell has a dark side that will make you question your life choices. \nGet ready for the never-ending switchbacks. Just when you think you’ve conquered one\, another pops up\, mocking your efforts and testing your endurance. It’s like a game of “Whack-a-Mole\,” but instead of moles\, it’s your spirit that gets repeatedly whacked by 40 switchbacks. \nBe prepared for fellow hikers on the trail that will be either wildly enthusiastic or completely delirious. There’s no in-between. Some will cheer you on with phrases like\, “You’re almost there!” and “You got this!” while others will mumble something incomprehensible that you can one can only assume is a secret hiker’s mantra. \nOnce we reach the summit we will be rewarded for our perseverance with stunning vistas and breathtaking views. All the sweat\, sore muscles\, and moments of doubt instantly become worth it\, not to mention a snack or a sandwich. \nAfter a well-deserved snacky time\, we will get our group photo and head on back down past Wally Waldon a local celebrity. This is a Limber Pine ( Pinus Flexilis) that is 1500 years old and believed to be the oldest living thing in the entire San Gabriel Mountains. \nMeeting your leader at the trailhead: We will meet at Vincent Gulch Divide at 7:15 AM for a 7:30 AM departure up the trail. (34.3731391721299\, -117.75191038616146) \nAdventure Pass: YES \nBathrooms: YES! At the trailhead. \nBring: Lots of water (3+ L)\, Electrolytes like Gatorade\, a hat\, sunscreen\, a lunch/ snack and hiking poles. Watch the weather forecast\, but it is always a good idea to pack another layer (in case it gets cold up there above 9000′ ). Good shoes with tread are a must. \nDogs: OK\, if on a leash and well-behaved with other dogs / people carrying poles. If you bring your dog\, please drive yourself. We do not recommend bringing our K9 friends if the weather forecast says it will be HOT. \nCarpool: SCV Caravan / Friends Carpool Meeting Spot – in NORTH Santa Clarita Valley (SCV): We do not organize carpools however if you want to carpool\, we suggest you message hikers/ close friends who you already know well and trust from a COVID perspective. A convenient place to meet on the way is: Outside STARBUCKS (16548 Soledad Canyon Rd\, Santa Clarita\, CA 91387)\, in the SAND CANYON/ Soledad Canyon Road junction VONs strip mall parking lot\, off 14 Hwy.\nTHIS IS NOT A CHC-ORGANIZED CARPOOL \nHike Lead: Paul H

SUMMARY:Ray Miller Trail in La Jolla Canyon ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:I pre-hiked the trail this morning and it is absolutely stunning with wildflowers beside the awesome blend of ocean and mountain views in Malibu’s La Jolla Canyon. The trail follows the canyon eastward\, away from the ocean. Then\, it quickly brings you back toward the ocean at a gradual incline. There’s a great lookout spot where it gives you a breathtaking view of the Pacific Coast Highway against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean\, with sweeping views toward Mugu Rock on the west and Sycamore Cove on the east. After another peak\, you’ll start a slight decline that brings you to the fire road where we will turn around. Along the way\, we’ll be treated to magnificent sweeping views of La Jolla and Big Sycamore Canyons\, and of course\, the largest ocean in the world. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight.\nThis is a 5-6 mile out and back hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 1100’. \nDirections: \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) north\, 22 miles from Malibu Canyon Rd. Across the street from Thornhill Broome Beach is the entrance to La Jolla Canyon. It is very clearly marked. Turn right. \nFrom Ventura\, take PCH eastward\, and turn left 4 miles after Las Posas Road. \nHeads up: There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the trailhead. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPlan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike\, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed\, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.\nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy ~ Cooler\, Gentler Hike
DESCRIPTION:This is a cooler\, gentler hike after a hot\, hot weekend. Because of the heat\, we will pace this as a gentler hike and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up and turn around just before going up to the monument. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up through grasslands and chaparral from the Rancho Sierra Vista trailhead\, then climb up Boney Mountain Trail for some fantastic views west to Port Hueneme\, Oxnard and the Pacific Ocean. We may see Santa Cruz Island as well as the Los Padres Mountain range if it’s not hazy. If it’s really clear\, we’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Baldy in the distance to our east. \nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1200 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA and pass into Point Mugu State Park and Wilderness. It’s mostly single track and fire road. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. Do NOT leave anything of value in your car\, at this or any other trailhead. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Dos Vientos - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.2 miles\, 1140′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nWarning: Google Maps may take you to the incorrect location\, although the address is correct. Please follow the written directions. \nThe hike starts completely flat along a gravel track that moves around the Dos Vientos Community park. It then gently rises into the surrounding hills\, continuing onto the Powerline trail. \nThe first 1.75 miles has about 350′ of gain and another 150′ of gain on the return\, including an extended incline of about 450 steps. The extended incline is fire road\, so it isn’t especially steep. \nParts are ruggedly strewn with small rubble but there are still clear foot paths along the edge. It will get the heart pumping and beginners will probably curse this extended climb. At the height of this point\, there is a fantastic overlook. \nWe continue another 0.85 miles for another 450′ of gain and 190′ on the return. It continues to the next electrical tower where the trail splits. This leads to the 2\,200 feet high Conejo Mountain in Camarillo\, CA. \nAt the end of this segment\, we’ll stop to share snacks and beverages before returning back the way we came. \nThis trail offers panoramic views of the Oxnard Plain\, the Pacific Ocean\, numerous Channel Islands\, Boney Mountain\, Mugu Lagoon\, and the Topa Topa Mountains. \nYou will see several plants of note: \nPrickly Pear Cactus\nInside and fruit are edible. Remove needles and scrape to remove hairs\, cut top off\, hollow out to make water container. Burn off needles. Fruit peels easily. Eat seeds and all. Use duct tape to remove thorns from hands. \nLichen\nA composite organism arising from algae\, cyanobacteria\, or both\, and often fungi. They come in many colors. Not related to moss or any plant. They get all their food from photosynthesis\, air\, water\, and minerals in their environment. Most comes from air\, and therefore\, can be used to monitor air pollution. 6% of earth’s land surface is covered by lichens. This is the paint that gives the look of the rocks of Yosemite. 20\,000 known species. Self-contained ecosystems. Some of the oldest living things. Can survive unprotected in space\, surviving vacuum\, fluctuating temperatures\, and cosmic radiation. Used for making dyes\, sometimes by boiling in water. Some are edible\, some poisonous. \nDirections\nDos Vientos Community Park\n4801 Borchard Rd\nNewbury Park\, CA 91320\n34.175205\,-118.981760 \nFrom the 118:\nWest to CA-23.\nCA-23 south for 7.4 miles.\nUS-101 north for 4.1 miles.\nExit 47B Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom CA-23:\nCA-23 south to US-101.\nUS-101 north for 4.1 miles.\nExit 47B Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nFrom US-101 (Camarillo/Ventura):\nUS-101 south.\nExit 47A Borchard Rd.\nBorchard Rd. south for 7 miles.\nDos Vientos park entrance on the right. \nThe Hike\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate\nDistance: 5.2 miles\nElevation Gain: 1140′\nDistribution: Most of the gain is on the way up.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: 2.0 mph\nTrail Variations: After 1.5 miles\, there will be several sections of 1000 steps or more that are continuous elevation gain.\nDuration: 3.5 hours.\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: Free in paved lot.\nTrail type: Single track and fire road. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nGroup separation:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon - The Shadiest Section of The Backbone Trail
DESCRIPTION:Another spectacular section of the Backbone Trail…this hike includes staggering views of pink colored sedimentary rock formations known as the Sespe Formation\, Hondo canyon’s pink “V” gourge\, beautifully shaded live oak\, streams and a sloping green meadow. Its perhaps one of the shadiest sections of the Backbone Trail. At the top we will see many fossils in the sandstone. \nThe hike is OaB and can be adjusted according to weather conditions. Lots of shade along this one (plus some clouds are predicted in Topanga as of this writing)\, but bring plenty of water; I recommend 2 quarts. \nHISTORY\nI’ll show you a bay tree woodland in Hondo Canyon that was the home of Paul C. Bragg. Bragg was a pioneer in the health food movement in California. He had a chain of health food stores and popular radio shows in the 30s and 40s. He was the inspiration and teacher for later healthy living teachers like Jack LaLanne. His abandoned vacation cabin was here until the early 1990s\, but was burned in the 1993 fire. There are still some artifacts. \nHike will be 6-8 miles depending on weather/group and is rated MEDIUM due to terrain. See the Hike Rating guide https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/ \nDIRECTIONS: \nMeet at backbone trailhead on south side of Old Topanga Road\, 1/4 mile west of Topanga Canyon. Park on south side of street \nClose-by parking is limited — be early!

SUMMARY:Oak Creek Canyon to Ventu Park Rd. (Fast Paced)
DESCRIPTION:http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/0/e/c/event_80025292.jpeg \nSince the trail has been redesigned and is now about 8 1/2 miles\, we will stop at Ventu Park Road for our break unless everyone wants to go on to Angel Vista. It will be warm\, so we may slow the pace down a little. \nAUGUST 2021 UPDATE: Please review the newly revised guidelines to participate in our hikes. We are again requiring proof of vaccination to join a hike. Here are some highlights and a link to the guidelines: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/The-Weekday-Trailblazers/about/ \nPLEASE NOTE: For those of you not on the WTB vaccination list\, you will be asked to show your vaccination card. (A photo on your phone is fine). No card: No hike. \n\nDon’t sign up unless you are two weeks past your 2nd vaccination\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list\nUnregistered or waitlisted will be turned away\nNo “Plus Ones” on this hike\n\nThis is a moderately strenuous 7+ mile OAB conditioning hike. Starts at the Oak Creek Canyon Trailhead\, and hiking through the Hope Nature Preserve along the Los Robles Trail. This section of the trail is also known as Space Mountain by the local mountain bikers because of all the antennas on one of the peaks along our climb. SUMMARY:Malibu Creek State Park (MCSP) from Down Under ~ Heat-Modified
DESCRIPTION:We will start this hike into MCSP from Tapia Park. The Tapia Park entrance is just before the Piuma intersection. Note: a day use fee (machine at entrance) is required if you don’t have a State Park Pass. After you enter Tapia\, drive to the picnic area and take a hard left onto Dorothy Lane. Follow the signs to Salvation Army Camp & Conference Center. It’s about 0.4 mile to the Salvation Army Camp entrance. Park on the right side of the road (lined pull-in parking stalls). \nOur hike starts on the Tapia Spur Trail\, which winds through a lovely chaparral “forest” and drops down onto the road by the park’s group campground. We’ll take the first in a series of side-trips to explore the Ann Skager trail that loops through a deeply shaded riparian/oak woodland. From there we will make our way to Crags Road. Crags Road runs along and above Malibu Creek. The water level has dropped enough to allow us to cross over the creek to Mott’s Road\, which leads to the MCSP Visitor’s Center. From there we’ll cross the “big” bridge to the famous Rock Pool\, our turnaround point. On the way back\, we’ll loop up and over the Grassland Trail to take in the sweeping views of MCSP’s central valley. \nThis out-and-back hike\, plus those side trips (Ann Skager\, Rock Pool\, Grassland Trail)\, clocks in at around 5.5 miles\, with an elevation gain/loss of about 650‘. I have timed this hike at 2 1/2 hours to allow a leisurely pace in anticipation of warmer weather. \nDirections: From the 101 Freeway take Las Virgenes Rd.\, south for 4.8 miles to the Tapia Park entrance (south of main MCSP entrance). \nPlease review the guidelines (link to the guidelines) to join our hikes.\nRestrictions apply for your safety and ours: \n\nProof of vaccination required.\nDon’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.\nPLEASE bring plenty of water.\nYour safety is your own personal responsibility\, but the hike leader reserves the right to ask you to leave if you come unprepared.\nNo “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.\n\nDISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY\nThe hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:EBIKE RIDE PAVED ROADS - CRYSTAL LAKE & HWY 39
DESCRIPTION:I’ve been wanting to travel on the upper end of Hwy 39 for years now\, hoping that it would eventually be reopened. To get to the high country of the San Gabriel Mountains\, I used to head up Hwy 39 out of Azusa to The Angeles Crest Hwy 2 at Islip Saddle. It’s been closed for 40 years now and I guess it’ll never be reopened\, so I will just have to do it on my ebike which will allow me to accomplish what I used to do in my thirties with my car.\nWe’ll meet in Crystal lake and take on Hwy 39 before coming back and checking all the roads in the campgrounds there. \nMake sure you bring along a spare inner tube. \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: 9:00am at the Crystal Lake Cafe \nPARKING FEE: Adventure Pass required \nROUTE: https://www.alltrails.com/explore/map/ebike-paved-crystal-lake-and-hwy-39-to-hwy-2-d35a296 \nDISTANCE: 22 miles. \nELEVATION GAIN: 3700′ – A lot of this elevation gain is in the Crystal Lake area itself and can easily be cut down if it proves to be too much. \nTHE PACE: No faster than the slowest biker in the group \nDURATION: 4+ hours including lunch at the Crystal Lake Cafe \nLEVEL: Advanced Beginner Ebiker or very strong mountain biker \nTERRAIN: Paved roads \nRESTROOMS: At the start\, middle and end of ride \nDEBRIEFING: At the Crystal Lake Cafe \nMY CELL # IS: 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:Wendy Lollipop
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 1000′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nEasier Option – 2.7 miles\, 320′ gain \nMany have gotten lost relying on GPS. This is the Wendy Trailhead\, where S. Wendy Dr. ends at Potrero Rd. \nHeading out\, we cross a creek\, turn right at the split\, then Turn right at the dead end. We regroup at the visitor center\, where there will be bathrooms. \nWe cross the wooden bridge and go left at the asphalt path. \nAfter 1/3 mile\, those that want the easier path turn left\, go 0.4 miles and turn right at the dead end. After 500′\, wait at the bench for the rest of the group (45 – 60 min). \nThe rest will continue down for 3/4 mile. There will be a porta-potty and picnic table. We’ll regroup\, then turn right and go about 1.3 miles and another 435′ of gain before turning left and heading up about 1/2 mile. \nAt the top\, we’ll turn left for 500′ and arrive at a bench and overlook. We’ll share snacks and beverages for 30-60 minutes\, then head down 500′\, turn right at the junction\, and return to our cars. \nIf you wish to return before the social event completes\, study the map so you can find your way back. \nThe Route\nHike Distance: 4.6 mi / 2.7 mi\nGain: 1000′ / 320′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is concentrated in the middle of this hike.\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate / Fit beginner\nShape: Lollipop.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: We pass a “no dogs” sign.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free along street.\nWhat to bring: 1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp. Sunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share \nHosting Route: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. \nStops: The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually an arrow made of baking soda or sticks. \nGroup separation: Hikers moving significantly ahead or not waiting at designated stopping points are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes\nHere are a couple plants you will see on this hike: \nHeartleaf Penstemon\nLeaves are shiny and saw toothed\, shaped like hearts\, 2 to 6 centimeters long and arranged oppositely on the branches. Stems are red. Small scarlet red tubular flowers. \nYucca\nWhite flowers on stalk. Stalk is often missing\, leaving only the spires from which it grows. Stalks are very strong and light\, so they make good walking sticks. Needles on end of spires. Chopped up root can be uses as shampoo. Roasted root can be eaten like a potato. Illegal to remove live stick in CA. Pronounced with short u. Dried leaves make good tinder. \nRoot can be chopped up and used as soap. To eat root\, remove skin and core\, boil 15 minutes. Then fry or bake. Flowers are mildly sweet. The fruit is also edible\, but bitter if not ripe. To access fibers: Soak for a month in water\, lightly pound leaves with rock or club\, or scrape skin off skin. Roll between hands\, then pull and separate fibers. SUMMARY:Hondo Canyon:Backbone Trail
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/hondo-canyon-backbone-trail \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nThis is a great trail for warmer weather as it has a lot of shaded areas. This trail has several canopy trees that cover the area. Will also have open field areas as well that are not shaded so we are starting the hike a little earlier. A side note will also experience some overgrown sections and some poison oak. Some people call this trail “The Tropical Forest” So should be quite pretty. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool or follow to the trailhead (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 6:45 am) I have attached the AllTrails link for stats\, directions and photos.. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/hondo-canyon-backbone-trail \nTrail out and back\nMiles 6.8\nRated moderate\nElevation Gain 1630 ft\nDogs not allowed on this trail\nParking Road side \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules:\n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring all essentials you’ll need for a hike (water\,hat\,sunglasses\,hiking boot/hiking shoes poles if needed snacks) \nLiability Disclaimer:\nAnd last….The Organizer\, Co Organizer\, Assistant Organizers and Event hosts in this group are not professional guides. The function of the Organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for an Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike. All responsibilities are of your own once you attend. Please be aware of your limit. During outdoor activity you can encounter bodily injury\, snake bites\, sunburn\, overheating\, etc. This is not within our control and we ask that you are prepared for any of the above once you sign up for an Event. If you need to take several breaks (not counting quick breather breaks) and stops throughout a hike\, the hike maybe too much for your ability. Please check each event for miles\, elevation gain\, and difficulty rating. The higher the elevation gain means more incline and less leveled off sections. SUMMARY:Escape the Heat this weekend - Mt. Pinos\, Sawmill Peak (and maybe Grouse Peak)
DESCRIPTION:Saturday July 22\, 2023 \nMeetup Time : 7:45 A.M. (8:00 am SHARP hiking start) \nIt is predicted to be 100 F + in SCV this weekend. Escape with us to the cooler mountains nearby where we can enjoy the mid/high 70’s at 8\,000′. \nHEAT ALERT: Due to the current heat wave\, I will provide a followup weather/temperature forecast by Thursday before event. \nDISTANCE: 7 miles or 10.5 miles total (see Description) – out and back style. \nGAIN: 1100′ or 1900′ total (see Description) \nRATED: Not for beginners. This one is Moderate / Moderate +\, mainly for thin air (low oxygen) impact and a few steeper stretches. \nHIKE DURATION: About 4-1/2 hours (including a 20 minute snack break) \nDESCRIPTION:\nThis 7 mile hike (3.5 miles each way) from the 8340 ft. trail head takes you to 2 summits (first Mount Pinos 8831 ft. and then Sawmill Mountain 8818 ft). Moderate hikers should be easily able to complete all three summits.\nExtra credit: 3 extra miles to the final Peak at Grouse 8\,573 ft and back.\nOnce we get to Sawmill\, depending on the group make up/temperature/weather\, etc. we will collectively decide\, but most probably we will continue on to Grouse\, yet another Peak. If we do\, it would be almost 10.5 and 1200′ gain total for the hike.\nBear in mind\, this entire “out and back” trail is very well marked/ easy to follow\, so you can safely turn around at ANY stage\, depending on your ability/ stamina. Also\, we will have signposted the route with our popular orange chalk arrows to help you 🙂 \nMount Pinos is the highest point in Ventura County and lies on the edge of the Chumash Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest. Mount Pinos\, created over 100 million years ago was known as Iwihinmu to the indigenous Chumash people. The slopes are a mix of sub-alpine\, white fir\, and Jeffrey Pine habitats. The views from Mount Pinos are beautiful\, especially if air is clear (San Joaquin Valley to the North\, Tehachapi to the East\, and the Carrizo Plain and Temblor Mountains to the Northwest).\nHopefully\, there should still be plenty of wildflower action at this cooler altitude. \nBRING:\nStrong shoes\, dress in layers (expecting 75 F at start). Poles are useful\, if you have them; snack lunch; a hat; !!sunscreen!!\, bug spray / bug net (in case). 3 liters of liquids (2L water/ 1 liter electrolytes\, i.e. Gatorade)\, and your camera. \nADVENTURE PASS:\nNot required in Summer. See bathroom note below. \nMEET : (Google Coordinates 34.8135\, -119.1263)\nYour leader at the Mt Pinos / Nordic Hut trailhead parking at 8:00 AM; we will depart up the trail to Mt Pinos at 8:00 AM SHARP.\nAllow 1-1/4 hours to get to trailhead from Santa Clarita. \nDIRECTIONS: From Santa Clarita Valley: Take I-5 North ~ 40 miles to the Frazier Park off ramp. Exit\, turn left under highway. Go West on the Frazier Park Road for about 12 miles passing Lockhart Valley Road (on the left) until you see signs for Mt. Pinos. Stay to the left at the main fork (do not go to Pine Mountain Club). Follow the road ahead\, twisting and turning 9 miles up the mountain to the Nordic Hut parking area\, at the end of the road. Park on the left side\, by the Mt Pinos trailhead\, and look for the group there. \nNOTE: There may (or may not) be operational Porta Potty toilets at trailhead or campground nearby. We recommend a quick stop as you exit the 5 Fwy at the Truck stop / gas station on the left\, before heading toward Frazier Park. \nDRIVING: If you wish to arrange a carpool with friends – Towsley Canyon/ Rivendale Park (Google coordinates 34.35815928\, -118.55535859) is a good meeting spot (24335 The Old Rd\, Newhall\, CA 91321 ) off I-5. \nLeader: Gary S

SUMMARY:Wildwood Park - Las Flores potluck hike - Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner – 4 miles\, 600′ gain\nThe gain is well distributed\, with half being on the return. \nWe start at the Las Flores trailhead where Las Flores dead-ends at Wildwood Park\, and head west. After 1/3 mile\, the trail becomes Wildwood Canyon Trail. We continue for another 2/3 mile and cross a bridge just past the Meadows Picnic area. \nWe’ll make a left\, continuing on Wildwood Canyon Trail\, past the Tee Pee Trail\, behind Paradise Falls\, left at the split\, and after about a mile\, Wildwood Canyon Picnic area will be on the left. There will be several tables. \nThis is a pot luck picnic. Please bring something to eat and drink\, and a little extra to share. If your item requires it\, bring plates and utensils to share. We’ll share snacks and drinks for 60 – 90 minutes\, before heading back the way we came. \nThe Hike\nDistance: 4 miles\nGain: 600′\nDistribution: Well distributed.\nDifficulty: Fit Beginner\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire Road\, Single-Track\, and Double-Track.\nDuration: 4.0 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes\nDrinking Fountains: Yes.\nParking: Free along street. \nWhat to bring\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots.\nFlashlight or headlamp (if it will be dark during any part of the event).\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route. Click the link to see the route. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed \nHike type: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or sticks in the shape of an arrow. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nGroup separation: Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nDirections\nLas Flores Trailhead\n604 W Avenida De Las Flores\nThousand Oaks\, CA\, 91360 \nFAQ\nHiking Plus Page Links\nDisclaimer / Release of Liability

SUMMARY:💦Sleeper Canyon to the Rock Pool - Swimming OK
DESCRIPTION:The Rock Pool is one of the most popular landmarks in Malibu Creek State Park. It has been the site of many movies and TV shows including Planet of the Apes\, Swiss Family Robinson series\, Tarzan movies and Dr Quinn Medicine Woman. \n🧺 🤽Bring a sack lunch — we’ll have an extended break by the Pool. In addition to the Rock Pool we’ll also have an opportunity to cool our toes at a Malibu Creek crossing. \nSOME HIGHLIGHTS ALONG THE WAY \nThe Mott Adobe – a vacation home built around 1925 by Los Angeles lawyer and member of Crags Country Club Johnny Mott on Mott Road just off Crags Road. Herbert Hoover once slept there \nThe structure is a Spanish Colonial Revival style adobe block structure with a two-door garage\, featuring local bricks\, wooden doors and beams\, and wrought iron fixtures. Only portions of the building are still standing. \nThe Visitor Center – The center was built in the Colonial Revival architectural style in the 1920s by Willis P. Hunt as a vacation home. Within you will find maps\, books\, souvenirs\, even refreshments for sale and nature exhibits. \nCampgrounds – We will also be traveling by a year-round campground that boasts 63 sites. \n👉This leisurely 7-mile hike with appx 1\,000 ft total ascent is rated MEDIUM. See the Hike Rating Guide \nDirections to Trailhead \nAs of this writing we will park in the Tapia Park day use area. Fee is $12/car. There may be free parking (at your own risk) across the street on the southeast corner of Piuma and Malibu Canyon Rd . If you park in free spot use the the Backbone Trail where it crosses under Malibu Canyon and into Tapia Park – or just cross the road. \nNote: I may change meetup venue….check back often for final selection. Normally I would park at the Backbone Trailhead on Malibu Canyon but we may not be able to cross the creek into Sleeper Canyon\, so we go around the Tapia way. I’ll try to find some time to scout it out before hike.

SUMMARY:Small But Mighty: Bats of Irvine Park - Must Register on Letsgooutside.org
DESCRIPTION:Note: The event starts at 7:30\, but you want to get there early to get to the Nature Center\, park\, etc. so I put 7:10. \n**You must also register here: https://letsgooutside.org/activities/2023/07/23/small-but-mighty-bats-of-irvine-park-4/ \nMap: Nature Center – Irvine Regional Park\nhttps://maps.app.goo.gl/wBLXnRyaqAaBoGuc7 \nAfter the sun has set\, the night sky fills with small but mighty flying bats. Enjoy an evening discovering how important bats are to our ecosystems and how they help us stay bug-bite free! The program begins with an informal introduction to bats at your own leisure. Then\, breaking into groups\, we will walk around the lake and park to search for these nighttime flyers as they race around catching their dinner. Bat detectors will help to identify and hear their high frequency calls. \nDress warmly in layers as we stroll about a half mile around the lake. Program is free though there is a Park Entrance Fee per entry vehicle. For questions\, please contact Resource Specialist\, Kelley.Brugmann@ocparks.com at 714-973-6625.

SUMMARY:Carpinteria Bluffs Trail & Nature Preserve - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:To beat this insane heat\, let’s explore Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve to Carpinteria State Beach\, passing through Tar Pits Park and Seal Sanctuary Overlook!\nI pre-hiked today. Yes\, it was cool as it was 67F when I was left there around 11am. \nThis beautiful\, beachside green space is one of the last undeveloped strips of land in Carpinteria that go along the ocean and offers outdoor recreational activities like hiking\, walking\, or biking on dirt trails and/or sand and more. \nCarpinteria Bluffs is also a popular viewing area for Pacific Harbor seals that often lounge on the beach. Occasionally visitors can even spot migrating grey whales and dolphins.\nhttps://californiawanderland.com/carpinteria-bluffs-tar-pits-park/ \nThis is a 4-5 mile hike with an elevation gain/loss of about 300-400’. \nDirection: Take the 101 Freeway to exit 85 for Bailard Avenue. At the end of the offramp\, turn left toward the coast on Bailard Avenue. Drive straight across the intersection of Carpinteria Avenue into a dirt parking area in Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve. \nPlease review the guidelines (guidelines) to join our hikes.
Restrictions apply for your safety and ours:
• Don’t show up unless you’re shown on the “Attending” list.
• Plan on KEEPING UP with the group and completing the entire hike at a moderate pace\, or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.
• No “Plus Ones” or dogs on Weekday Trailblazer hikes.
DISCLAIMER/RELEASE OF LIABILITY – PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY
The hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. SUMMARY:Intermediate 8-9 miles Ray Miller Trail and Overlook Trail in Malibu
DESCRIPTION:Join us on an out and back hike up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll turn back around the Guadalasca Trail intersection. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1500’ gain on this 8-9 mile adventure. IF it gets too hot we will have the option to shorten the hike. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. \nMost of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. It is mosquito season so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). There is a parking fee in the lot (or free with state parking pass). There is free parking on PCH just a short walk to the parking area. \nhttps://a248.e.akamai.net/secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/7/4/a/event_93326442.jpeg \nPlease review the ongoing guidelines to participate in our morning hikes.
