However this way has a lot more elevation due to it being a shorter route. As the main review states “Initial up and down hills lead to the climb to China Flats and a gentle ascent to Simi Peak. SUMMARY:The Grand Canyon (not that one)
DESCRIPTION:Not for beginners-limited number of hikers. Rain cancels hike. \nImportant: Parking is limited and carpooling will help. Also\, the parking area fills up early so please arrive on time. This location does require a National Forest Adventure Pass for parked vehicles. \n \nThe Stats \nDistance: <12 miles round trip \nRating: 8/10 \nElevation gain: 2500 ft. \nTrail: Lollipop route\, single track\, asphalt\, fire roads and no trail in the GC. \nDuration: 6-7 hours \n \nThe Plan \nBelow the slopes of Mount Lowe\, the “Grand Canyon” is modest by the standards of the San Gabriels and certainly bears no resemblance to the famous ditch of the same name. The uphill leg of this adventure follows the path visitors once took on the Mount Lowe RR to get to the Alpine Tavern where our entry into the Grand Canyon begins. The off-trail hike down the length of the Grand involves the descent of several steep but short earthen slopes (most safely accomplished by sliding on one’s rear end)\, but is otherwise a quite straightforward off-trail hike. It involves a pleasant wooded canyon where there are several human artifacts of interest. At its terminus the Grand discharges into Millard Canyon where we’ll pick up a trail back up to the Sunset Ridge trail and our cars. \n \nThe Story \nThe portion of the Mt. Lowe Railway beyond Echo Mountain was the Alpine Division\, which took visitors up to the Alpine Tavern for food and accommodations. The Alpine Division\, according to the Pacific Electric Railway’s Employee’s Timetable\, was 3.57 miles in length\, and her longest stretch of straight track just 225’. Yet another highlight on the Alpine Division was Circular Bridge\, about the halfway point to Alpine Tavern from Echo Mountain. This engineering fete was the brainchild of engineer David Macpherson\, where the track completes a full circle and doubles back on itself at a higher level. Those that remember riding on this route in its heyday say this was the scariest part of the ride. Cars would periodically stop for souvenir shots. Upon arriving at Crystal Springs and Alpine Tavern\, the terminus of the Alpine Division\, one could have a bite to eat and stay the night. Other amusements in the area included hiking or horseback riding to the summit of Mount Lowe\, billiards\, miniature golf\, tennis\, viewing the silver fox farm\, hiking up to Inspiration Point\, riding the famous One Man and a Mule Railway\, or just mingling with the visitors around the great fireplace. \n \n \nMt. Lowe Preservation Society (http://www.mountlowe.org/) \nThaddeus Lowe (http://www.thaddeuslowe.name/) \nDirections:To the Chaney Trail Gate: Exit the 210 fwy in Pasadena at Fair Oaks and go north to Loma Alta Dr. Turn left here and then turn right on Chaney Trail (flashing yellow light overhead). Take Chaney Trail to the top\, you’ll see a gate to your right. Park here\, but do not block the gate. continuing down the road past where the gate is will take you down to parking for Millard Campground. We are not meeting down there. \nCheck the Weather (http://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:91001.1.99999) \n******************************************************************* \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. SUMMARY:Temescal Canyon Special
DESCRIPTION:Temescal Canyon is a very popular hiking spot with great views of the ocean and LA basin on clear days\, a seasonal waterfall\, and a densely wooded canyon. This looped hike is a nice workout at about 5 miles with a net elevation gain of about 1\,200 ft. \nBut this won’t be your typical Temescal trek! \nWe’ll begin at the lower end of the first parking lot and walk along Temescal Creek on the Sunset Trail. After 0.4 miles we’ll head up the Ridge Trail under chaparral arches with some nice views of the Palisades and the Pacific Ocean beyond. \nAfter a brief climb we’ll take our first detour and dip into the El Medio neighborhood\, walk up the street a bit\, then climb the western side of Temescal Ridge and back up to the Ridge Trail. \n \nAfter a sustained climb we’ll turn west on the Leacock Trail toward wide ocean views. Then we will turn onto the less traveled Bienveneda Trail which will take us back up to Temescal Ridge. \n \nWe then descend into Temescal Canyon\, dropping through chaparral and heavier vegetation\, reaching the canyon floor and cross a foot bridge just downstream of a small waterfall. We’ll can go off-trail to get a closer look. \n \nAt the bottom of the canyon we’ll do our 2nd detour: a “shortcut” up to the Rivas Canyon Trail and subsequently down the official trail back down to Temescal Canyon. \nWe’ll hike along the creek back to our meeting spot as the the trail transforms into an easy stroll through pleasant groves. \n \nDirections \nTemescal Gateway Park is located in Pacific Palisades\, just one mile north of Pacific Coast Highway at the intersection of Temescal Canyon Road and Sunset Boulevard. \nPark for free on Sunset or Temescal\, or enter park and use the first pay lot on the left. Meet outside park on NW corner under Park Sign \nFrom Los Angeles\, take the Santa Monica Freeway (10) West until it becomes Pacific Coast Highway(PCH). Continue West on PCH. Turn right (North) on Temescal Canyon Road and continue for 1 mile. Park on street \nFrom the Conejo and San Fernando Valley\, take Topanga Canyon Boulevard South to Pacific Coast highway(PCH). Turn left (East) on PCH. Go Left (North) on Temescal Canyon Road and continue for 1 mile. Park on street \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. SUMMARY:Talopop - Suitable for fit beginners
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner\, 4.1 miles\, 720′ gain. \nIs it Talepop or Talopop? Maps and signs that I have seen\, use the 2nd spelling\, but a lot of references use the other. \nThere are several portions with extended inclines that will make a beginner hiker stop for a breather. \nThere is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. A couple of the inclines\, while not extreme\, continue for about 1000 steps\, and there are also several hills that are about 100 steps each. We won’t be hiking this trail at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781). \nWe’ll meet in front of the facilities building at the center of the park. This is a lollipop hike. \nSome of the hike is fire road\, and a lot of the hike is single-track. Some has complete exposure to the sun\, and some is through shaded wooded areas. \nWe’ll head behind the facilities building in the center and head left down the Las Virgenes Trail. After 1/3 mile\, the trail turns 90 degrees\, we continue on the easier route for 1/10th mile instead of taking the trail that climbs the hill. After we cross the dry creek bed where a bridge used to be\, we turn right and it becomes the Talopop Trail. \nWe’ll follow it around for another 1.8 miles until it dead ends at a fire road\, Liberty Canyon Trail. There\, we’ll wait for others to catch up\, and we can share some beverages and/or snacks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) before continuing. \nWe’ll turn left and after 1/3 mile\, the trail dead ends again at Las Virgenes Fire Road. We’ll turn left again and travel 1.1 miles where we’ll hit another junction\, turning right back onto Las Virgenes Trail for the final 0.4 mile return\, making a left at the split right behind the facilities building. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nCalifornia Sagebrush – Artemesia Californica \nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nAn infusion can be made for an insect repellent. \nDirections: \nTalopopJuan Bautista de Anza Park3701 Lost Hills RoadCalabasas\, CA 91301 \nFrom the 118 \nWest to CA-23 southCA-23 south for 7.4 milesUS-101 east for 9.5 milesExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.Lost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 milesPark on the right. \nFrom the 101 \nExit 33 Lost Hills Rd.Lost Hills Rd. south for 0.2 milesPark on the right. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 4.1 miles\, 3.5 hours\, counter-clockwiseElevation Gain: 720′Distribution: Reasonably well distributed\, some of the gain on the return portion.Shape: LollipopDifficulty: Easy-IntermediatePace: 2.0 mphDuration: 3.5 hoursDogs: NoRestrooms: Yes\, at the start.Drinking Fountains: Yes\, at the start.Parking: Free in the paved lot\, or along the street..Trail: Fire Road and single track\, good condition. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.Navigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.Hike type: Social. \nThe description includes a picture of the route. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \nWhat to Bring:2 liters of water.Snacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).Hiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.Flashlight or headlamp.Sunscreen and/or hat as needed. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Long Canyon - Coyote Park
DESCRIPTION:5 miles\, 1000′ gain\, Easy Intermediate \nFrom the trail head\, we cross the street. We walk a block and then head up behind the houses. This first climb will get your blood pumping. At the top of the hill\, there are spectacular views of the neighborhoods and Bard Lake. \nWe’ll head down\, then up a steep climb for about 200 steps to a bench. We’ll regroup to let people catch up. Then we’ll walk along the ridge. The trail then circles right\, and head back down to Long Canyon Rd. We walk along the road for 750′\, then enter a trail to the left. \nWe walk a flat trail for 3/4 of a mile\, reaching Coyote Park. We’ll keep going\, and where the basketball courts are\, we’ll see a cement path to the left. We’ll take it up and after about 100′\, we’ll find a cement platform to the right\, where we’ll stop for a social event for up to 1 hour (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nThose that wish to leave before the end of the event\, should study the route so they can navigate the rest of the way back on their own. \nWe’ll continue along this path\, making a left when we can\, then follow the trail up for about 1500′ of a thigh burning climb. We turn right when when we can\, returning us to a trail we came on. We take it back the way we came. It will go up a hill\, then back down to Long Canyon Rd. \nThe Route.• Start at the trail head parking lot.• Instead of entering the trail head\, cross the road to back side.• Left at first trail head and begin our first difficult climb up along Canyon View Trail.• Turn right at junction and make our second difficult climb\, up to bench. We’ll stop there and let others catch up and perhaps share a beverage.• Continue along the ridge and then down Canyon View Trail to Long Canyon Road.• Left along the road for 1/4 mile\, then left on a mostly flat horse trail to Coyote Hills Park.• Pass the horse track and left in front of the basketball court. After about 50′ up the trail\, we’ll stop for a beverage and snack share.• Continue for a mild climb up\, then left at Wood Ranch Trail.• Another difficult climb before reaching a trail we came on. Return to the lot the way we originally came\, which will include an extended incline before heading back to the road. \nInteresting Notes \nYou will see these two plants on this hike: \nTurkey Mullein \nSmashed leaves can be thrown into the water to stupify fish\, causing them to float to the surface\, a practice illegal in most states. The seeds are not toxic to birds and are enjoyed especially by doves and wild turkeys. \nAncient Greeks rolled and dried the leaves\, then used them as wicks for oil lamps. It stalks were used as torches burned at funerals. Many tribes employed the use of mullein leaf tea for coughs\, colds\, and rheumatism. They considered it to be analgesic\, anti-inflammatory\, antispasmodic\, and expectorant. The astringent and demulcent properties of the leaf tea were found useful in cases of diarrhea. \nCurly Dock \nAlso called Yellow Dock. The casing enables the seeds to float on water and get caught in wool and animal fur\, and this helps the seeds to spread to new locations. Add leaves directly to salads in moderate amounts. Eat only in moderation. Root is used to treat anemia because it has high iron levels. \nWhips the blood into shape restoring its ability to distribute nutrients and eliminate toxins from the system. Can ease abscess-induced toothache in minutes. Tea from roots and leaves used for: Anemia\, Bleeding lungs or bowels\, Blood Toxicity\, Cancer\, Low Energy \, Liver Problems\, Skin Problems\, Abscesses\, Acne\, Bladder\, Boils\, Childhood Diseases\, Cleansing\, Diabetes\, Digestive Disorders\, Earache\, Ear Infection\, Fatigue\, Fever\, Flu\, Fractures\, Gall Bladder\, Glands\, Swollen\, Gout\, Inflammation\, Itching Pancreas\, Leprosy\, Pituitary Gland\, Psoriasis\, Rheumatic conditions\, Skin problems\, Spleen\, Tumors\, Ulcers\, and Venereal Disease. \nDirections:Where of Long Canyon Rd. and S. SUMMARY:Oak Spring and Yerba Buena Ridge Loop
DESCRIPTION:This is a lightly traveled loop trail in seldom seen Angeles Forest back country. Due to the fact that there is no shade on this hike it is best conducted in the winter or early spring when temps are cool and everything is green from rain. The reward for this hike are the incredible vistas from the Yerba Buena Ridge in 360 degrees. \nCOVID protocol: vaccinated hikers only \nNot for beginners \nImportant: You will need to drive over a concrete causeway over Gold Creek on Gold Creek Road to access trailhead parking. Normally\, this means a couple of inches of water or less. So please be prepared to drive this water crossing (no water last year) \nThe Stats \nDistance: 9.5 miles \nElevation Gain/Loss: 2600ft. \nRating: Moderate 7/10 \nTrail: Single track\, fire road\, some paved road. \nDuration: roughly 5-6 hours \nBring hat water and lunch. This hike is 100% exposed.————— \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Mash Site - Malibu Creek State Park Potluck Hike
DESCRIPTION:Fit Beginner – 6 miles\, 600′ gain \nThis is a social hike and an out-and-back event. \nThere is a potluck at the M.A.S.H. site before we turn around for the return. If your item requires paper plates\, utensils\, etc. please bring them. \nPot Luck guidelines: https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772 \nWe will meet at the Grasslands trail head off of Mulholland Hwy and take the Grasslands Trail with a gentle climb and connect to the High Road (~3/4 miles). We’ll take a right and follow the High Road another 3/4 miles then take a right at Crag Road up a short 1/3 mile climb (170′ gain). At the top of the hill\, we’ll take a left turn down the short bypass trail to Century Lake. \nFrom Century Lake\, the trail is level all the way to the M.A.S.H. site. From the lake we’ll continue on Crag Road and at a 1/2 mile we’ll cross over Malibu Creek. The bridge over the creek is washed out\, so we’ll have cross over some fallen branches and rocks just beyond the bridge (I’m not sure of the water level or conditions of the creek\, so there is a chance you may get wet). Another 3/4 miles on Crag Road we’ll reach our destination and have our potluck. \nHikeDistance: 6.0 milesGain: 600′Distribution: Well distributed.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Fit Beginner.Shape: Out and Back.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.Trail Variations: Mostly fire road. SUMMARY:Happy Camp 2 - Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.7 Miles\, 1000′ gain\, Intermediate. \nThe starting point is NOT at the golf course entrance. It is at a dirt lot that can hold at least 50 cars. There is some real incline on this hike and a lot less trails coated with silt compared to the easier Happy Camp hike. \nEven though I have rated this “intermediate”\, there are no steep sections. The 2nd quarter is an continuous fire road incline that can get exhausting. \nWe start with about 1.25 miles of relatively flat and slightly downhill double-tracker. Then we start up a fire road for 1.5 miles with a continuous incline of 700′. This section can be exhausting\, so I’ve rated the hike on the easy end of the Intermediate spectrum. \nA strong and motivated beginner can do this hike\, but they will be challenged and slow during this segment. That’s OK\, because this is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to regroup\, and there is nothing wrong with taking many small stops along this section to catch your breath. \nAfter having done two segments\, we’ll reach a steel hitching post and clearing\, where we’ll have a social event lasting about an hour. We’ll be rewarded with spectacular views in all directions. During the day\, you can easily see the ocean and Channel Islands. Finally\, we’ll head back the way we came. \nInteresting Notes. These are plants you will likely see on this hike. \nWhite Sage \nIt is very aromatic and is the plant burned in “smudging” to ward off evil spirits and perform other purification. \nAlong the second half of the outbound section\, both sides of the trail have patches of White Sage. \nBlack Mustard \nFlowers\, leaves (mustard greens)\, and roots are edible. Can be used as a spice. SUMMARY:Limekiln Canyon Lollipop - Suitable for beginners
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, gain: 500′\, beginner. \nThis is a beginner hike on the beautiful Limekiln trail. The hike starts at the trail head near the Tampa exit on I-118\, just 3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit. \nThis hike is a slight lollipop (from the shape of the route). There are no extended inclines\, however there are about 5 bumps in the trail with 25-40′ gains\, about 35-65 steps each. This is something a beginner would be able to handle\, but these bumps will get the blood pumping\, as they are like climbing up to 4 flights of stairs. There is nothing wrong with pausing for a breather while tackling these bumps in the trail. \nThe trail varies between asphalt\, gravel fire road\, single tracker\, tree covered\, hilly\, roadside\, wooded\, open air\, and strolls through the park. We’ll enter Limekiln Canyon\, where we’ll first encounter a heavily wooded park with large pine trees lining the trail and blocking out the sun. We’ll continue for about 2 miles. We’ll reach Sesnon Blvd.\, and then travel about 20 yards west and taking a different trail back into the Canyon. \nAfter several hundred yards\, we’ll return to the original trail for the return. Soon\, we’ll take a slightly different route by making a right off the trail\, but it still returns back to the original trail after a short distance. \nJust before we complete the last 3/4 mile\, we’ll turn right instead of left. After about 100 years\, we’ll find a great spot with a giant fallen tree trunk to have a social event (snack and beverage share – https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nAfter about 30-60 minutes\, we’ll continue the last 3/4 mile back to our cars. Those that don’t want to stick around are welcome to head back to their cars by any route they choose\, but I’ll take a few splits to the right and cover some different trails\, each that returns back to the original trail after several hundred yards. \nThere will be a couple creek crossings on the return\, where one will use a few stepping stones to avoid getting wet. In general\, it won’t matter if you choose incorrectly from this point because all the splits end up going the same way. \nInteresting Notes: \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Buckwheat \nWhen the white flowers turn a rusty brown\, they can be crushed into a powder\, mixed with water\, and baked into bread. The black seeds in the flower heads are also edible. Don’t touch the white flowers if bees are around because they won’t like it and may attack. A cold tea made from the leaves has been used to treat stomachaches and headaches. A warm tea made from the roots has been used to treat colds. The stems are stiff and flexible\, so they have been used by Indians as piercing utensils. \nLaurel Sumac \nRed stems and outline along leaves. The dried flower bunches look like small trees\, and are used by model railroad builders as such\, after being dyed green. Laurel sumac is sensitive to cold and does not tolerate freezing conditions. Orange growers in the early history of southern California used to pick places to plant their oranges based on where laurel sumac was growing because this indicated it would not get too cold for oranges if laurel sumac could grow there. For some\, the sap will irritate their skin just like poison oak\, causing blisters. Also called “Taco Plant”. \nDirections: \nLimekiln Canyon TrailPorter Ranch\, CA 91326 \nFrom the 118 \nExit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.Left (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.Trailhead on the right (north).Park on either side of the street. \nFrom the 101 @ CA23 \nNorth CA-23 for 8.4 milesEast I-118 for 18 miles.Exit Tampa Ave (3 miles east of the Topanga Canyon exit) and head north for 1000′.Left (west) on Rinaldi St. for 1000′.Trailhead on the right (north).Park on either side of the street. \nThe Hike: \nDistance: 4 milesElevation Gain: 500′Difficulty: EasyPace: 2.5 mphDogs: YesRestrooms: NoDrinking Fountains: NoParking: Free on either side of the street in front of the trail head.Trail: Varied. SUMMARY:Palo Comado Lollipop - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:4.6 miles\, 900′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nThis route takes us through a beautiful canyon via a counter-clockwise lollipop. Most of the hike has a clear view of the sky\, with a few parts that have tree cover. We’ll be stopping at the half-way point for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nWe’ll start at the Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead (coordinates: 34.182480\,-118.751785) and head east for 1/2 mile along the Doubletree Connector Trail. We’ll turn left and head north along the Palo Comado for about 1 mile. We’ll turn right (east) onto the Dead Cow Trail for 0.8 miles\, where we’ll come to an overlook on the left. \nThere\, we’ll stop for a snack and beverage share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). Then we’ll continue down the Sheep Corral trail for about 700′\, turning left back onto the Palo Comado trail. From there\, we’ll head south 1.75 miles and turn right (west) onto the Doubletree Connector Trail and the final 1/2 mile back to the trailhead. \nHikeDistance: 4.6 milesGain: 900′Distribution: Most of the incline well distributed in the first half.Difficulty (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.Shape: Lollipop\, counter-clockwise.Pace: approx. 2.0 mph.Trail Type: Fire road and single track. A pic of the route has been posted as part of this description. \nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed. \nHike type: Social. We won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. See “How hard is this hike” in the discussion section (LINK (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)). \nStops:The host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) share at the half way point. We will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda or some sticks. \nGroup separation:Sometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack SageMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. \nYellow Star ThistleThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing. Permanent brain damage is possible\, and affected horses may starve to death. Used in Turkish folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers. In a laboratory study\, aqueous extracts of fresh or dried flowers of yellow star thistle given orally showed significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats. \nDirections (Palo Comado Canyon – Doubletree Trailhead): \nFrom I-101:I-101\, exit Kanan Rd.Kanan Rd. north for 2 miles.Right (east) on Sunnycrest Dr. for 0.6 miles.Continue on Doubletree Rd. for 0.l miles.Trailhead on the right\, park along the street. \nFrom CA-118\, CA-23:I-118 west.I-23 south for 4.8 miles\, exit Avenida de Los Arboles.Left (east) on Avenida del Los Arboles for 1.6 miles.Right (south) on N.
