His dream was to build a railway into—and a resort complex atop—the San Gabriel Mountains high above Pasadena. In the 1890s\, his dream became a reality. During the height of its popularity\, millions took Professor Lowe’s “Railway to the Clouds” to fine hotels and spectacular views of Southern California. Until it was abandoned in the 1930s\, it was the Southland’s most popular tourist attraction. \nDirections to Trailhead \nFrom I-210\, in Pasadena\, exit at Lake Ave. north. Drive 3.6 miles North on Lake Ave. to E Loma Alta Drive; the old stone entrance to the Cobb Estate is located where the two streets meet. SUMMARY:Beach Walk\, Breakfast\, and a Hike in Summerland
DESCRIPTION:This is a 6.5 mile easy to moderate hike with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nDue to Covid-19\, I am limiting this hike to 7 people with no guests. Each person must maintain a distance of 6 feet or more\, and wear a mask when necessary. \nWe will start promptly at 9:15 \nFrom the Loon Point parking lot\, the trail will take us down to the sandy shore where we will walk a mile on an isolated beach with views of sandstone cliffs\, mossy rocks\, and perhaps remnants of oil fields and piers that at one time stood there. \nThis stretch of beach will lead us to Lookout Park with real bathrooms. Then the road will take us into the town of Summerland where we will stop for breakfast at the Summerland Beach Café. SUMMARY:Garapito Canyon - Eagle Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \n \nOur hike begins at the top of Reseda Blvd\, the western gateway to the Big Wild. Shortly after the hike begins we descend along the Bent Arrow Trail — a narrow path that will take us on winding route up a south-facing slope that finally tops out on a rounded\, nearly flat ridge. A grassy knoll to our right marks the start of the Garapito Canyon Trail \n \nWe’ll descend the narrow Garapito Trail cutting a sinuous course through mature chaparral — mostly mountain mahogany and ceanothus up to 20 feet tall. The blossoms of the ceanothus exude an attractive wild honey scent in spring. Tunneling through the tall brush\, the trail eventually switchbacks down to the sycamore-shaded canyon bottom\, crossing two forks of Garapito Creek and then contours a short distance over to an east fork. \n \nThe climb out of Garapito Canyon will bring us to our detination: Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park. It will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \n \nTo make this a loop we’ll return to the Bent Arrow trail via the Temescal Ridge Trail. Hike is about 8 miles with 1500′ total ascent.Directions \nFrom the 101 in Tarzana exit Reseda Blvd and head south. Go about 3 miles and drive into the park near the top of Reseda. There is a painted line crossing Reseda Blvd inside the park. Parking is free on the downhill side of the line. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. DESCRIPTION:Details\nOn this one we’ll visit the old pig farm and have a post-hike lunch at Malibu Seafood Patio where they let you bring your own drink. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. The water is a crazy hue. The Minarets rising above are stunning. \nWe went her last year and filled it to max. This year we will limit our total number to HALF for social distance. With less capacity DO NOT DELAY!! \nThere are amazing places on the way there and nearby as side trips. Such as the Anceint Bristlecone Forest\, Mansanar\, Alabama Hills\, Fossil Falls or Red Rock Canyon (Cantil). \nEven with that: You don’t see trips often to Big Pine Lakes. This is because area is only open from May to October. With such a small window sites are super hard to get. Especially for holiday weekends.AND WE HAVE AN AMAZING SITE! \nTons of conveniences. There is a small cafe that serves breakfast\, lunch and dinner\, and a small general store with a few necessities for if you need them. We are NOT on a group site. We have the entire park of small individual sites. Se it makes it better for distance issues.Many of the sites have electrical and water at the site.Restrooms are close. Space for cars\, and an overflow lots near. \nBest of all . . . There is a Fish Pond!!!!! Stocked with trout. You can even catch dinner. The fish pond is free!!! For fishing you will need to buy (AND HAVE WITH YOU) a fishing licence before you go. They do rent poles at the general store and have bait too. \nTons of shade from mature pines for many of the sites \nWe are steps away from the trail-head AND steps away from the roaring glacier fed Big Pine Creek. \nThe site is located at 7\,800 ft so it’s cooler. \nFood: Food prep and storage is going to be new distancing issue. Bring your own food\, and storage (cooler). Everyone does their own food prep.Paper plates provided (they do burn well for campfires). \nFLEXIBILITYLeave LA when you can. Arrive at the campsite as late as you wish.We have the site Thurs\, Fri\, Sat and Sun. The peak\, which is 2\,715 feet (828 m) in elevation\, sits on the Los Angeles County–Ventura County line.We will be hiking along some old ranch roads that may be a little grassy and overgrown. SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \n \n \nAfter-hike shenanigans will take place at Spruzzo Malibu (http://www.spruzzomalibu.com/)\, right on the corner of Busch Dr and PCH — you pass it on the way out. \nDirections: From Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu\, one mile west of Kanan Dume Road\, turn north on Bonsall Drive. Follow Bonsall to its dead end at the mouth of Zuma Canyon. Ample\, FREE parking. \nBring at least one qt water\, hiking shoes/boots\, hat\, sunscreen\, snacks \nNote: When leaving\, do not return to PCH on Bonsall. Instead\, make a right on Rainsford Place\, then left on Busch Dr to PCH. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is desired. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & 101.\n2. You will drive past many parking lots and turnouts. Keep driving until you can see the chain-link fence at end of road \nTake the 101 to Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. Head south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Drive just before Coldwater merges into Mulholland Dr.  Road signs read “Road Closed 800 Feet” “Sunset to Sunrise”; this is the park entrance. Do NOT make a U-turn as this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay on paved surface\, drive past the Outdoor Classroom/Nature Center\, and continue south of the lake for 1.5 miles\, bearing left onto Lake Dr at stop sign\, and head toward the end of Lake Dr to large parking lot next to large grass lawn. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nCome celebrate the relaunch of the HWD website and the 5th anniversary of the VIP Circle (aka the VIP Club). \nHike Details\nWe’ll do a hike in Malibu and have a post-hike lunch at our favorite Malibu restaurant where I will be serving up Mango Margaritas and who knows what else. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. The year-round stream provides ample water to support this 550-acre park’s numerous plant communities and a diverse wildlife population. \nYou will love the natural beauty of Solstice Canyon\, yet wildfires have left behind the architectural ruins of our recent past.  During out trek we will pass remains of the Keller House\, a stone hunting cabin built over one hundred years ago\, and significantly damaged by fire in 2007. Upon arriving at the park’s most popular feature\, the 30′ Solstice waterfall\, we will find the stone and brick ruins of The Roberts Ranch house designed by architect Paul Revere Williams in 1952. In 1929\, Williams became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects and later designed a prominent landmark at the Los Angeles International Airport\, the “LAX Theme Building (1961).” \nWe will hike the TRW\, Rising Sun\, Sostomo\, and Deer Valley trails in addition to the Solstice Canyon Trail. \n[vc_message icon_fontawesome=”far fa-mountain” color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1800 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. Apologies for not being able to add everyone but safety is the main priority right now. \nBring a headlamp and layers for the stopping points. \n************************** \nWe usually do a loop and come down Wildwood but let’s change it up a bit this time. We’ll hit a few lookout points and try to reach the Wishing Tree for sunset. Please read the parking instructions. We are meeting just outside of the Nature Center lot. \nThis write up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: <6 miles \nElevation Gain: 1800 feet. \nRating: Moderate 5/10 \nTrail: Fire Road and Single Track w/very little shade. \nDuration: 2.5 to 3 hours \nParking pass/fees: NO – park OUTSIDE of the gate to the nature center lot \nThe Area \nAbove the top of the Upper De Bell Golf Course lies a valid reason to hike over the mountains. At the top of Walnut Avenue\, near the Stough Nature Center\, fire roads lead to the Verdugo (Wildwood) Mountainway Trail. \nThis is also referred to the “water tower” or radio station trail\, as the crest of the trail comes over the top of the mountain from the back fire road into Wildwood park. The Verdugo Hills Mountainway is an extensive trail system migrating over the mountain toward Glendale for a brisk hike and back towards Pass Avenue much farther north in Burbank for a robust hiker’s pace. \nThe trails\, which extend from the Sun Valley area North of Burbank to the mountainous Glendale’ adjacent Brand Park can test the strongest hiker. Bring water\, a cellphone\, sunblock and a hat on sunny days. A strong stick might be excellent leverage through steep and narrow rocky switchbacks\, especially the north trail of Wildwood leading up from the water tower split. Restrooms of a distinctly primitive variety are located inside the nature center and at the base of the Wildwood lower and middle trailheads. \nThe other trails stemming from the Burbank Nature Center and the crest of the upper Wildwood paths lead northeast to the communities of Tujunga and La Crescenta. \nHiking and mountain biking are permitted on the fire roads. Stay to the side of the road consistently to avoid dust and being hit by speedy or careless bikers. Burbank hikers should wear a strip of bright clothing in case they get lost or fall into neighboring brush. Hillsides are steep\, sandy and uncertain\, wear shoes with traction. \nThe smaller trails are for hiking only and along with the fire roads lead to spectacular views of the San Fernando valley. The base of the Wildwood Canyon Park and mountain trails have grassy and cool canyon picnic areas. Unfortunately\, the peace and serenity is clouded at times by the shooting range right near by. Paved roads run up the narrow canyon road to the base of the water tower fire road trailhead. \nThe Stough Canyon Nature Center has an exhibit hall with educational and interpretive displays about the natural history of the area and its plant life. It features a small nature library\, a focal classroom\, and an environmentally congruous outdoor amphitheater. The Stough Center provides information on local habitat and the natural history of the area. Visitors to Burbank\, residents and hikers come for the nature workshops\, classes and seasonal day camps. \nStough Canyon Nature Center was named after Oliver J. Stough\, who donated land to the City for public parkland that includes Stough Park\, Stough Canyon Nature Center\, and the Starlight Bowl. The Nature Center was dedicated in 2001 and has an exhibit hall with educational and interpretive displays\, small library\, classroom\, and outdoor amphitheater. \nDirections \nIn Burbank from Glenoaks Blvd you want to take E Walnut Ave toward the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains. You’ll go past the Da Bell Golf Course and since the gates to the Stough Nature Center close relatively early we’ll meet on Walnut just before the park entrance. Parking is free and plentiful. The map is accurate. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. Bring lunch and warm layers/poncho. \n************************** \nWrite up is Don’s: \nSTATS \nDistance: 11.4 miles \nElevation Gain: 2000 \nRating: 7/10 \nParking pass/fee: NO \nTrail: a bit of asphalt and single track trail\, overgrown\, bush whacking\, trail finding\, loop – not for beginners \nTHE PLAN \nFrom the parking area we head down an asphalt road which takes us to the first canyon. In this first canyon there is a trail in some portions and not so much in other parts. There will be a few spots of some minor boulder hopping and very short climbs. If there is any water it should be avoidable. At the end of this canyon is where we’ll encounter either overgrown trails or no trail at all as we start our ascent to the loop trail. This section is less than an 1/8 of a mile and brings us to the middle portion of the route. This area does not get much use which can make the trail overgrown and difficult to find in some areas. In this area we’ll also have a rather continuous climb as we head over to Piano Box. There will be a couple spots with unavoidable water\, but not very deep. (Not likely due to our current drought situation) This area is also like a roller coaster with ups and downs\, nothing crazy steep for long distances\, but yes there are steep spots. We’ll also get some great views to the north and Redrock Mountain and stop and look at some wind caves. This middle portion will drop us down into an area known as Piano Box which is also the entrance to Fish Canyon Narrows. The trail down to Piano Box is deteriorated in very short sections and will require extra care when traversing. We will take an elongated break here and hopefully there will be some water flowing so we can cool off a bit before returning the final few miles to the cars. \nIn summary: This is a great hike with many different aspects contained in one route and a great sense of accomplishment when complete. This is NOT a regular trail hike where you can return to your car if you get tired like at Griffith Park. Depending on the weather you can never have too much water on this hike. \nThe area: Here\, amid the arid-looking mountains north of Castaic Lake\, Castaic Creek flows the better part of the year through a sinuous gorge flanked by picturesque sandstone outcrops. The creek is perfect for wading – shallow\, slow-moving\, and warmed by the sun. Fish Canyon Narrows: In the trenchlike confines of middle Fish Canyon\, aridity and moisture stand side by side\, separated by a matter of a few yards. Mountain mahogany\, manzanita and other drought-resistant shrubs cling to the walls\, while a shallow stream gurgles merrily past a line of oaks\, sycamores\, willows\, and cottonwoods. It is almost as if a little slice of the Pacific Northwest was transplanted to Southern California. \nDirections: Head north of the San Fernando Valley on the 5 freeway and go about 6 miles north of Lake Hughes/Castaic exiting at Templin Hwy. Go right to the end of Templin Hwy (about 4 miles) At the end of Templin HWY you will see a gate and a road going to a LADWP facility to your right. Park at this gate.The map above works\, but you do need to continue on the the end of Templin as described above. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Beginner's Exploratory Overnight Backpacking Trip in Carpinteria
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThis is an exploratory and beginner’s backpacking hike. So\, only 5 spots will be available. \nWe meet at the Amtrak Train Station in Carpinteria. At the train station\, we leave our cars for free overnight parking. Then\, we proceed to hike with our backpacking gear to the end of the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve where we turn back towards the Carpinteria State Beach for a total of 5.6 miles. At the beach entrance\, we wait for the 2:00 p.m. check-in time to open and pay $10 per person for a spot in the hike/bike campground of the beach. We’ll enjoy the beach/campground the rest of the day and camp overnight at the beach. The following morning\, we break camp to go around downtown before heading home. \nI have not done this before and I’m not really good in my sense of direction\, having been lost so many times in many foreign destinations and still enjoyed it. For those of you who are familiar with my Goat Peak hike\, this will be a slightly shorter version\, but with the same elevation gain. Two segments\, one 1.5 miles and another 0.5 miles\, will be overgrown and may require some bushwhacking in places. SUMMARY:Arroyo Conejo to Hill Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Moderate five round trip mile hike\, with a total elevation gain/loss about 400 feet. Follow the trail from Newbury Park to the Hill Canyon Water Treatment Plant. There is pleasant scenery along the Barranca and through riparian native plant communities. Return by way of the same trails. There are five creek crossings in each direction. Some of the crossings have rock fords or pallet bridges.
