SUMMARY:(Friday) Mt. Lowe Railroad/Inspiration Pt/Echo Mt. - 11.5 Mile Loop
DESCRIPTION:All aboard for the Self-Guided Hiking Tour of the Historic Mt Lowe Pacific Electric Railroad with stops at Echo Mountain\, Ye Alpine Tavern\, Inspiration Point and points in between: \nStation 1: Echo MountainStation 2: View of Circular BridgeStation 3: Cape of Good HopeStation 4: Dawn Station/Devil’s SlideStation 5: Horseshoe CurveStation 6: Circular BridgeStation 7: Horseshoe Curve OverviewStation 8: Granite GateStation 9: Ye Alpine TavernStation 10: Inspiration Point \nRequired reading: (http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm) http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm \nThis hike is considered one of the most important historical railway hikes in the United States. \nHere is a video of the Mt Lowe Trolley: \nWe won’t be doing the first incline. Go in about 30 sec to start at Station 1. Watch for the Circular Bridge (Station 6). \nTotal elevation gain is about 3000 ft. There will be many stops along the way so clear your calendar for this day. Stamp this hike “strenuous.” \nBackstory \nProfessor Thaddeus Lowe\, Civil War balloonist\, man of fame and fortune\, was the quintessential California dreamer. His dream was to build a railway into—and a resort complex atop—the San Gabriel Mountains high above Pasadena. In the 1890s\, his dream became a reality. During the height of its popularity\, millions took Professor Lowe’s “Railway to the Clouds” to fine hotels and spectacular views of Southern California. Until it was abandoned in the 1930s\, it was the Southland’s most popular tourist attraction. \nDirections to Trailhead \nFrom I-210\, in Pasadena\, exit at Lake Ave. north. Drive 3.6 miles North on Lake Ave. to E Loma Alta Drive; the old stone entrance to the Cobb Estate is located where the two streets meet. Park along the street\, being sure not to block private driveways. \nWeather Watch \nAltadena WeatherCam (http://www.westphalfamily.com/wxdata2.html) \nForecast (http://www.findlocalweather.com/pinpoint/us/ca/mount+lowe+railway+historical+marker/current15618.html)

SUMMARY:Beach Walk\, Breakfast\, and a Hike in Summerland
DESCRIPTION:This is a 6.5 mile easy to moderate hike with 800 feet of elevation gain. \nDue to Covid-19\, I am limiting this hike to 7 people with no guests. Each person must maintain a distance of 6 feet or more\, and wear a mask when necessary. \nWe will start promptly at 9:15 \nFrom the Loon Point parking lot\, the trail will take us down to the sandy shore where we will walk a mile on an isolated beach with views of sandstone cliffs\, mossy rocks\, and perhaps remnants of oil fields and piers that at one time stood there. \nThis stretch of beach will lead us to Lookout Park with real bathrooms. Then the road will take us into the town of Summerland where we will stop for breakfast at the Summerland Beach Café. They are known for their sugar-cured thick-cut bacon\, eggs benedict\, light & delicate waffles topped with fresh fruit\, and Mimosa drinks. \n***I will give an update about breakfast when we get closer to the date.*** \nhttp://www.summerlandbeachcafe.com/ \nFollowing breakfast we will walk through the neighborhood and after a short jaunt on Whitney Avenue\, we will make a turn into an easement and hike into the back hills above Summerland. \nThese trails are unique as they skirt the property lines of several horse ranches and orange groves. We will venture into the Greenwell Nature Preserve\, cross a creek and hike through a small forest\, to the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club\, then back to Point Loon. \nDIRECTIONS:Loon Point Beach Parking2770-2850 Padaro Ln34.415785\, -119.58231 \nFrom the 101\, take Exit 90 (Summerland exit) and turn left on Padaro. Continue on Padaro until you reach the Loon Point Beach Parking on your left. \n*** Don’t let the exits fool you. Remember to EXIT 90\, do not exit 88 which is Santa Clause Lane/Padaro Lane *** \nHIKING DETAILS:Carpooling is always a good idea.Distance: 6.5 mile loopTime: 9:00 – 1:00 approximatelyElevation Gain: about 800′Difficulty: Fit beginner/intermediateDogs: Leashed\, per State lawRestrooms: At the Lookout Park and the restaurantParking: Free in the parking lotKnown Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall \nWHAT TO BRING:2 liters of waterSnacks/lunchSunscreenHatsDress according to the weatherCamera \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY:• You must RSVP to attend this event\, no exceptions.• If you choose to sign up for any event\, you are releasing the organizers of Hike and Explore from all liability in case of possible injuries.• The organizers of Hike and Explore are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. SUMMARY:Garapito Canyon - Eagle Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/hikingwithdean/ \n \nOur hike begins at the top of Reseda Blvd\, the western gateway to the Big Wild. Shortly after the hike begins we descend along the Bent Arrow Trail — a narrow path that will take us on winding route up a south-facing slope that finally tops out on a rounded\, nearly flat ridge. A grassy knoll to our right marks the start of the Garapito Canyon Trail \n \nWe’ll descend the narrow Garapito Trail cutting a sinuous course through mature chaparral — mostly mountain mahogany and ceanothus up to 20 feet tall. The blossoms of the ceanothus exude an attractive wild honey scent in spring. Tunneling through the tall brush\, the trail eventually switchbacks down to the sycamore-shaded canyon bottom\, crossing two forks of Garapito Creek and then contours a short distance over to an east fork. \n \nThe climb out of Garapito Canyon will bring us to our detination: Eagle Rock\, the most impressive landmark in all of Topanga State Park. It will afford us an airy perch overlooking the upper watershed of Santa Ynez Canyon and the ocean beyond. We will snack and explore on this impressive sandstone rock covered with crevices and caves. \n \nTo make this a loop we’ll return to the Bent Arrow trail via the Temescal Ridge Trail. Hike is about 8 miles with 1500′ total ascent.Directions \nFrom the 101 in Tarzana exit Reseda Blvd and head south. Go about 3 miles and drive into the park near the top of Reseda. There is a painted line crossing Reseda Blvd inside the park. Parking is free on the downhill side of the line. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER.

SUMMARY:Corral Canyon - Puerco Canyon Loop - Malibu Seafood - BYOB
DESCRIPTION:Details\nOn this one we’ll visit the old pig farm and have a post-hike lunch at Malibu Seafood Patio where they let you bring your own drink. \nOur hike will begin at sea level in Corral Canyon\, the last undeveloped coastal canyon in Los Angeles County that flows freely to the ocean. Maybe there will be water in the creek this time. We will then leave Corral Canyon for my “secret trail” through pristine wilderness to the Puerco Canyon watershed divide that provides spectacular ocean and mountain views. The trail isn’t so secret any more\, but it is the trail less traveled. We’ll return to the restaurant via another secret trail \nWe’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and mysterious buildings… \n[av_notification title=’Hike Rating’ icon_select=’yes’ icon=’ue8c5′ font=’entypo-fontello’ color=’orange’ border=’solid’ custom_bg=’#444444′ custom_font=’#ffffff’ size=’large’ close_btn=” cookie_lifetime=’60’ av_uid=’av-kdw5i1′ custom_class=” admin_preview_bg=”]\nHike is about 6 miles with about 1\,250 ft total ascent and is rated MEDIUM. Wear a mask or face shield whenever social distancing is impossible or impractical. It is mandatory that you bring a face shield. Kitchen opens at 11:00 AM. Maybe we’ll spot some dolphins frolicking in the waves\, or some celebrities. \n \nThey let you bring your own beverages including booze. So pack a cooler with your favorite beverage and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the trailhead — you will deserve it! I’ll bring some white wine. \nBring sunscreen\, hat\, 2 quarts water\, sturdy shoes and a snack. Clothing optional. \nDirections\nDrive to Malibu Seafood at 25653 Pacific Coast Hwy and park on PCH or pay $8.00 at trailhead parking lot next to restaurant. Iron ranger accepts credit cards \n

SUMMARY:Lower Zuma Canyon Loop
DESCRIPTION:Zuma Canyon is distinguished for being one of the deepest gorges in the Santa Monica Mountains and unlike Topanga or Malibu Canyons has never suffered incursion by a major road. \nOur 5.6 mile loop hike begins in a deep cleft of the Santa Monica Mnts.\, then winds up a mellow ridgeline with gorgeous ocean views\, statuesque sycamores\, tall laurel sumac and scattered wildflowers. The first 1.5 miles is slightly strenuous with an 800 ft gain. If that does not leave you breathless\, the views will. \nWhile venturing through the canyon\, look and listen for the signs of life around you. Walk carefully along the trails and discover tracks of deer\, rabbit and coyote. Marvel at the delicate homes of funnel web spiders hiding in the earth’s tiny crevices. Listen for the shy wren-tit\, the “voice of the chaparral.” Though rarely seen\, its call sounds like a ping-pong ball echoing throughout the canyon. \n \n \nAfter-hike shenanigans will take place at Spruzzo Malibu (http://www.spruzzomalibu.com/)\, right on the corner of Busch Dr and PCH — you pass it on the way out. \nDirections: From Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu\, one mile west of Kanan Dume Road\, turn north on Bonsall Drive. Follow Bonsall to its dead end at the mouth of Zuma Canyon. Ample\, FREE parking. \nBring at least one qt water\, hiking shoes/boots\, hat\, sunscreen\, snacks \nNote: When leaving\, do not return to PCH on Bonsall. Instead\, make a right on Rainsford Place\, then left on Busch Dr to PCH. \nEvent rules: \n1. Carpooling is desired. There is a convenient park-and-ride at Kanan & 101.\n2. All hikers must stay on established trails\n3. No use of flour or chalk to mark trails.\n4. Practice “Leave No Trace” – take only pictures and leave only footprints

SUMMARY:🌚 No Moon Hike: Natoma Loop and a Little More
DESCRIPTION:Natoma Loop Trail is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located in Woodland Hills. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop a bit into the cool side of Mulholland for a distance of about 3.5 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nNO WHITE LIGHTS ALLOWED ON HIKE. Green and/or red lights are ok. If you don’t have one walk with someone who does or don’t bother attending. Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes. https://amzn.to/2E9Fb30. (emergencies excepted\, of course) \nIt will be a warm evening but at least the sun won’t be beating down on us while we watch it set with great views of the Valley. Bring something cold to drink at the top 🍺🍹 \nNOTE: YOU SHOULD WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHERE SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. BRINGING A MASK OR FACE COVERING IS MANDATORY FOR ATTENDING THIS HIKE. \nDirections \nProceed to the south end of Natoma Ave and park on right side of street in dirt lot. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Mt. Lowe Railroad/Inspiration Pt/Echo Mt. - 11.5 Mile Loop
DESCRIPTION:All aboard for the Self-Guided Hiking Tour of the Historic Mt Lowe Pacific Electric Railroad with stops at Echo Mountain\, Ye Alpine Tavern\, Inspiration Point and points in between: \nStation 1: Echo Mountain\nStation 2: View of Circular Bridge\nStation 3: Cape of Good Hope\nStation 4: Dawn Station/Devil’s Slide\nStation 5: Horseshoe Curve\nStation 6: Circular Bridge\nStation 7: Horseshoe Curve Overview\nStation 8: Granite Gate\nStation 9: Ye Alpine Tavern\nStation 10: Inspiration Point \nRequired reading: (http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm) http://mtlowe.net/self_guided_tour.htm \nThis hike is considered one of the most important historical railway hikes in the United States.

If you require a white light then this hike is not for you. Get one of these and stuff it into your backpack for future night hikes. https://amzn.to/2E9Fb30. (emergencies excepted\, of course) \nIt will be a warm evening but at least the sun will be low on the horizon when we start. We will watch it set with great views of the Valley. SUMMARY:Journey to the Center of the City - Franklin Canyon
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This HDW original is a classic. On this 6-7 mile hike I will take you through Franklin Canyon and then a bit off-trail to the “planar” center of Los Angeles. It will make a great photo opp. There will be about 1200 ft of  total ascent. It is rated MEDIUM \nFranklin Canyon Park is one of the very few places in LA with a greenbelt filled with pines\, sycamore\, eucalyptus and cedars\, most notably the Atlas Cedar and mature Coast Redwoods that are a rare site in most big cities. \nHighlights along the way to the center of the city: \nFranklin Canyon Lake:\nThe location where we see Opie skipping a rock in the water during the opening credits of The Andy Griffith Show and Capt. Kirk falling in love with an Indian maiden on Star Trek. \n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”52894″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row] \n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/dIf5xKdKGe0″ align=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nThe Doheny House:\nThe family of oil baron Edward L. Doheny used the canyon as a summer retreat and a place to graze and water their cattle. The Doheny family built a Spanish style home here in 1935. \n \nHeavenly Pond:\nA small duck pond located to the west of the Franklin Canyon Lake. See the turtles? \n \nBring snacks and a quart of water. \n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=”Click to RSVP” shape=”square” color=”danger” size=”lg” align=”left” i_icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-ticket” add_icon=”true” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.meetup.com%2Flocalhikers%2Fevents%2F272239861%2F||target:%20_blank|rel:nofollow”][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nHere are some scenes from some popular TV shows and movies filmed at Franklin Canyon. Do you recognize any?\n[vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=”image_grid” images=”52893\,52892\,52891\,52890″ img_size=””][/vc_column][/vc_row] \nFor you music lovers\, here are a couple of albums covers photographed in Franklin Canyon:\n[vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”52897″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”52896″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column] \n  \nDirections – Parking is Free\nFrom West Los Angeles: \nHead north on Beverly Drive following signs to Coldwater Canyon. Turn left on Coldwater/Beverly Drive\, and turn left again on Beverly Drive\, at Fire Station No. 2. The third right is Franklin Canyon Drive. Continue through the residential area to park entrance. At the intersection of Franklin Canyon Drive and Lake Drive turn right onto Lake and head toward the end of Lake Dr to parking lot next to large grass lawn. \n(If you are coming down Sunset from east of Beverly Dr its probably easier to take Rexford to Beverly) \nFrom the San Fernando Valley: \nThis is one of those cases when the GPS will mess you up using the destination address. But if you use the address 2300 Lake Dr you will get real close and you just need to keep driving  0.3 miles to near end of road (works with Google Maps/Android). \nHere are the written directions to 1930. You will drive past many parking lots and turnouts. Keep driving until you can see the chain-link fence at end of road \nTake the 101 to Coldwater Canyon Boulevard. Head south to the intersection of Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland Drive. Make a 90 degree right turn onto Franklin Canyon Drive just before Coldwater merges into Mulholland Dr.  Road signs read “Road Closed 800 Feet” “Sunset to Sunrise”; this is the park entrance. Do NOT make a U-turn as this will bring you onto Mulholland Drive instead of Franklin Canyon. Stay on paved surface\, drive past the Outdoor Classroom/Nature Center\, and continue south of the lake for 1.5 miles\, bearing left onto Lake Dr at stop sign\, and head toward the end of Lake Dr to large parking lot next to large grass lawn. You will drive 0.6 mi past the sign for “Franklin Canyon Ranch” then 0.3 mile past the point marked 2300 Lake Dr  to the large parking lot on the left \nInteractive Map\n \nHere is an aerial and street view of your destination

SUMMARY:🥭 Malibu Mango Madness
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nCome celebrate the relaunch of the HWD website and the 5th anniversary of the VIP Circle (aka the VIP Club). \nHike Details\nWe’ll do a hike in Malibu and have a post-hike lunch at our favorite Malibu restaurant where I will be serving up Mango Margaritas and who knows what else. We’ll return to the restaurant via another secret trail \nWe’ll have fun checking out the artifacts from a bygone era…and mysterious buildings… \n[vc_message message_box_color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 4.5 MILES WITH ABOUT 1150 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED MEDIUM DUE TO TERRAIN. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \n  \nCheck out my slide show from various similar hikes\n \nPost-Hike Lunch\nAfter the hike we’ll have lunch next door at Malibu Seafood Patio. Kitchen opens at 11:00 AM. I’ll be serving free margaritas to our VIP Circle members. Maybe we’ll spot some dolphins frolicking in the waves\, or some celebrities. \n \nThey let you bring your own beverages including booze. So feel free to pack a cooler with your favorite beverage and enjoy a fresh seafood lunch by the trailhead — I’ll bring the Margaritas. \nBring sunscreen\, hat\, 2 quarts water\, sturdy shoes and a snack. Clothing optional. \nDirections\nProceed to restaurant. There is street parking on PCH\, $12.00 at the iron ranger in trail head parking lot next to restaurant  — cc ok. We’ll meet in the upper right hand corner of pay lot. \nTrail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But don’t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think you’ll need. \nTrail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly. \nThe Organizers and members in this group are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. The function of the member or organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who shows up for a trip/meetup (and their guest or guests) is responsible for his or her own safety. By attending a hike\, or any other event organized by this group\, you are acknowledging that you and any guests that you bring are aware of the risks\, dangers and hazards associated with the activity and freely accept and fully assume all such risks\, dangers and hazards\, and further agree to release and discharge the Organizers\, Members of the Hiking With Dean Meetup Group from and against any and all liability arising from your participation in the group activities per the ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND LIABILITY WAIVER.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

We’ll connect up with The Summer Hill Ranch Trail — a short and easy loop that curves around a low-rising hill dotted with coastal live oak trees. \nHighlights during this stroll through a wooded canyon include ocean views and a sturdy bridge that will take us across Santa Maria Canyon. After crossing the bridge we’ll take Summer Hill Ranch trail to the Canyon Overlook. Here\, either at a picnic table or atop a sandstone outcrop\, we’ll enjoy a potluck party with excellent views of Topanga Canyon’s trademark geology and of Santa Maria Canyon. There are caves and crevices to explore too! \nSo bring some snacks and drink to share under the full moon.\nHere is a slide show from a daytime version of this hike: \n \n  \nNO WHITE LIGHTS – Red and Green lights only. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Scroll down to rsvp[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][vc_message message_box_color=”danger”]PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WHENEVER POSSIBLE\, ESPECIALLY AT TRAIL HEAD AND BREAK SPOTS. WEAR A MASK OR FACE COVERING WHENEVER SOCIAL DISTANCING IS IMPOSSIBLE OR IMPRACTICAL. IT IS MANDATORY THAT YOU BRING A FACE COVERING. BRING HAND SANITIZER IF YOU HAVE IT.[/vc_message] \nDetails\nSolstice Canyon is the quintessential coastal canyon. The year-round stream provides ample water to support this 550-acre park’s numerous plant communities and a diverse wildlife population. \nYou will love the natural beauty of Solstice Canyon\, yet wildfires have left behind the architectural ruins of our recent past.  During out trek we will pass remains of the Keller House\, a stone hunting cabin built over one hundred years ago\, and significantly damaged by fire in 2007. Upon arriving at the park’s most popular feature\, the 30′ Solstice waterfall\, we will find the stone and brick ruins of The Roberts Ranch house designed by architect Paul Revere Williams in 1952. In 1929\, Williams became the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects and later designed a prominent landmark at the Los Angeles International Airport\, the “LAX Theme Building (1961).” \nWe will hike the TRW\, Rising Sun\, Sostomo\, and Deer Valley trails in addition to the Solstice Canyon Trail. \n[vc_message icon_fontawesome=”far fa-mountain” color=”warning”]HIKE IS ABOUT 7 MILES WITH ABOUT 1800 FT TOTAL ASCENT AND IS RATED DIFFICULT. SEE THE HIKE RATING GUIDE[/vc_message] \nBring at least 2 quarts water\, sunscreen\, hat\, snacks. Sturdy tennis shoes OK. \nPost-Hike Lunch\nWe’ll do lunch at the Malibu Seafood Cafe (http://www.malibuseafood.com/) on PCH after the hike.  I’ll be serving VIP Margaritas\, but its Ok to bring your own beverage – wine\, beer\, soda…. \nDirections:\nFrom PCH\, turn inland on Corral Canyon Rd. and proceed north for about 0.2 mile until you arrive at the entrance to the Solstice Canyon Park. Proceed along Solstice Canyon Rd for about 0.5 mile until you arrive at the second parking area. Corral Canyon Rd is between Malibu Canyon and Kanan-Dume Rd.[/vc_column_text][vc_message icon_fontawesome=”far fa-clock”]Arrive early — parking fills up fast. Gate officially opens at 8am\, but a friend of mine that works there says it may be open earlier. You should be there when it does. If it opens early enough we can get an 8am start.  If not we’ll meet at the bathrooms at 8:20 and start hike on  the TRW Loop Trail just past the bathrooms. I’ve posted a map below\, click on it and save to device or print.  If you miss us\, make a right at the star and head for the Rising Sun Trail.[/vc_message][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”rsvp”][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nRSVP Here\n[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_js]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[/vc_raw_js][/vc_column][/vc_row]

But like nature and vacuums\, we abhor fire roads. Thus\, shortly after the hike begins we will leave the fire road and take a small\, slightly overgrown use trail that passes a clay gully and crosses a lush ridge up to the Temescal Ridge trail. We’ll return along the fire road making a loop in the canyon. \nAlong the way don’t forget to check out an old quarry marked by a single out of place palm tree juxtaposed against the indigenous chaparral. \nWe’ll soon meet up with Temescal Ridge trail and head over to Temescal Lookout \nWe’ll find some comfy spots among the ruins of an old ranger station/fire lookout and have our snack break. SUMMARY:Stough Canyon Out and Back
DESCRIPTION:*** YOU MUST BRING A FACE COVERING to meet up at the trailhead and to use on trail when it is not possible to avoid close proximity to other hikers. Please be mindful of other people’s space. DO NOT APPROACH ANYONE WITHOUT YOUR FACE COVERING. \n*** Hike is waitlisted. For the time being\, you must have hiked with us previously. Put yourself on the list and I will add you if I feel you can complete the hike AT THE GROUP’S PACE SAFELY. Also\, limiting the total number of attendees (~10) so please change your RSVP immediately if you cannot make it. Apologies for not being able to add everyone but safety is the main priority right now. \nBring a headlamp and layers for the stopping points. \n************************** \nWe usually do a loop and come down Wildwood but let’s change it up a bit this time. We’ll hit a few lookout points and try to reach the Wishing Tree for sunset. Please read the parking instructions. We are meeting just outside of the Nature Center lot. \nThis write up is Don’s: \nThe Stats \nDistance: <6 miles \nElevation Gain: 1800 feet. \nRating: Moderate 5/10 \nTrail: Fire Road and Single Track w/very little shade. \nDuration: 2.5 to 3 hours \nParking pass/fees: NO – park OUTSIDE of the gate to the nature center lot \nThe Area \nAbove the top of the Upper De Bell Golf Course lies a valid reason to hike over the mountains. At the top of Walnut Avenue\, near the Stough Nature Center\, fire roads lead to the Verdugo (Wildwood) Mountainway Trail. \nThis is also referred to the “water tower” or radio station trail\, as the crest of the trail comes over the top of the mountain from the back fire road into Wildwood park. The Verdugo Hills Mountainway is an extensive trail system migrating over the mountain toward Glendale for a brisk hike and back towards Pass Avenue much farther north in Burbank for a robust hiker’s pace. \nThe trails\, which extend from the Sun Valley area North of Burbank to the mountainous Glendale’ adjacent Brand Park can test the strongest hiker. Bring water\, a cellphone\, sunblock and a hat on sunny days. A strong stick might be excellent leverage through steep and narrow rocky switchbacks\, especially the north trail of Wildwood leading up from the water tower split. Restrooms of a distinctly primitive variety are located inside the nature center and at the base of the Wildwood lower and middle trailheads. \nThe other trails stemming from the Burbank Nature Center and the crest of the upper Wildwood paths lead northeast to the communities of Tujunga and La Crescenta. \nHiking and mountain biking are permitted on the fire roads. Stay to the side of the road consistently to avoid dust and being hit by speedy or careless bikers. Burbank hikers should wear a strip of bright clothing in case they get lost or fall into neighboring brush. Hillsides are steep\, sandy and uncertain\, wear shoes with traction. \nThe smaller trails are for hiking only and along with the fire roads lead to spectacular views of the San Fernando valley. The base of the Wildwood Canyon Park and mountain trails have grassy and cool canyon picnic areas. Unfortunately\, the peace and serenity is clouded at times by the shooting range right near by. Paved roads run up the narrow canyon road to the base of the water tower fire road trailhead. \nThe Stough Canyon Nature Center has an exhibit hall with educational and interpretive displays about the natural history of the area and its plant life. It features a small nature library\, a focal classroom\, and an environmentally congruous outdoor amphitheater. The Stough Center provides information on local habitat and the natural history of the area. Visitors to Burbank\, residents and hikers come for the nature workshops\, classes and seasonal day camps. \nStough Canyon Nature Center was named after Oliver J. Stough\, who donated land to the City for public parkland that includes Stough Park\, Stough Canyon Nature Center\, and the Starlight Bowl. The Nature Center was dedicated in 2001 and has an exhibit hall with educational and interpretive displays\, small library\, classroom\, and outdoor amphitheater. \nDirections \nIn Burbank from Glenoaks Blvd you want to take E Walnut Ave toward the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains. You’ll go past the Da Bell Golf Course and since the gates to the Stough Nature Center close relatively early we’ll meet on Walnut just before the park entrance. Parking is free and plentiful. The map is accurate. \n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. SUMMARY:Cienega Canyon Loop for Fall Colors
Also\, limiting the total number of attendees so please change your RSVP immediately if you cannot make it. Apologies for not being able to add everyone but safety is the main priority right now. \nLong sleeves and pants recommended. Bring lunch and warm layers/poncho. \n************************** \nWrite up is Don’s: \nSTATS \nDistance: 11.4 miles \nElevation Gain: 2000 \nRating: 7/10 \nParking pass/fee: NO \nTrail: a bit of asphalt and single track trail\, overgrown\, bush whacking\, trail finding\, loop – not for beginners \nTHE PLAN \nFrom the parking area we head down an asphalt road which takes us to the first canyon. In this first canyon there is a trail in some portions and not so much in other parts. There will be a few spots of some minor boulder hopping and very short climbs. If there is any water it should be avoidable. At the end of this canyon is where we’ll encounter either overgrown trails or no trail at all as we start our ascent to the loop trail. This section is less than an 1/8 of a mile and brings us to the middle portion of the route. This area does not get much use which can make the trail overgrown and difficult to find in some areas. In this area we’ll also have a rather continuous climb as we head over to Piano Box. There will be a couple spots with unavoidable water\, but not very deep. (Not likely due to our current drought situation) This area is also like a roller coaster with ups and downs\, nothing crazy steep for long distances\, but yes there are steep spots. We’ll also get some great views to the north and Redrock Mountain and stop and look at some wind caves. This middle portion will drop us down into an area known as Piano Box which is also the entrance to Fish Canyon Narrows. The trail down to Piano Box is deteriorated in very short sections and will require extra care when traversing. We will take an elongated break here and hopefully there will be some water flowing so we can cool off a bit before returning the final few miles to the cars. \nIn summary: This is a great hike with many different aspects contained in one route and a great sense of accomplishment when complete. This is NOT a regular trail hike where you can return to your car if you get tired like at Griffith Park. Depending on the weather you can never have too much water on this hike. \nThe area: Here\, amid the arid-looking mountains north of Castaic Lake\, Castaic Creek flows the better part of the year through a sinuous gorge flanked by picturesque sandstone outcrops. The creek is perfect for wading – shallow\, slow-moving\, and warmed by the sun. Fish Canyon Narrows: In the trenchlike confines of middle Fish Canyon\, aridity and moisture stand side by side\, separated by a matter of a few yards. Mountain mahogany\, manzanita and other drought-resistant shrubs cling to the walls\, while a shallow stream gurgles merrily past a line of oaks\, sycamores\, willows\, and cottonwoods. It is almost as if a little slice of the Pacific Northwest was transplanted to Southern California. \nDirections: Head north of the San Fernando Valley on the 5 freeway and go about 6 miles north of Lake Hughes/Castaic exiting at Templin Hwy. Go right to the end of Templin Hwy (about 4 miles) At the end of Templin HWY you will see a gate and a road going to a LADWP facility to your right. Park at this gate. The map above works\, but you do need to continue on the the end of Templin as described above. \n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. SUMMARY:Beginner's Exploratory Overnight Backpacking Trip in Carpinteria
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nThis is an exploratory and beginner’s backpacking hike. So\, only 5 spots will be available. \nWe meet at the Amtrak Train Station in Carpinteria. At the train station\, we leave our cars for free overnight parking. Then\, we proceed to hike with our backpacking gear to the end of the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve where we turn back towards the Carpinteria State Beach for a total of 5.6 miles. At the beach entrance\, we wait for the 2:00 p.m. check-in time to open and pay $10 per person for a spot in the hike/bike campground of the beach. We’ll enjoy the beach/campground the rest of the day and camp overnight at the beach. The following morning\, we break camp to go around downtown before heading home. \nI have not done this before and I’m not really good in my sense of direction\, having been lost so many times in many foreign destinations and still enjoyed it. So\, be prepared for all of the surprises that an exploratory hike brings. \nDuration: 1 day \nFor Safety: \nBring/carry a backpacking gear good for an overnight trip. \nCOVID-19 RULES: \n1.
