SUMMARY:Santa Rosa Valley to Hill & Hawk Canyons - Gentler 5.5 mile 700'
DESCRIPTION:This route is pretty dry. If we get a deluge\, I may consider cancelling\, but otherwise it’s a go! \nThis loop / lollipop hike starts at the parking area in Hill Canyon. We’ll cross the bridge over the creek\, and meander a mile before turning onto the Hawk Canyon Trail\, through the notch alongside the creek\, to the Edison Road\, up the hill to the Peninsula Trail\, around Canyon View\, past Volcanics and Elliott Peak trail\, back down to the creek\, and back out to the cars. We will take a few breaks along the way to wait for everyone to catch up. Here’s the GaiaGPS details. \nWe’ll see lots of brown hills and meadows. On Sunday\, when I pre-hiked this route\, there were actually a few wildflowers left in bloom amidst the tumbleweeds. This will be a good opportunity to establish a “before” picture in your mind\, in hopes of a beautiful “after” the coming rains. \nI generally spray my hat and legs with bug repellent on this hike – YMMV. Also\, we may hike over a wet spot on the trail along the creek. \n5.5 miles\, 700′ elevation. Optional Brunch / Lunch after at Old New York Bagel & Deli in Camarillo \nDirections: \nFrom Moorpark Road in the Santa Rosa Valley\, drive west on Santa Rosa Road for 3.7 miles\, turn left (south) on Hill Canyon Road for about 0.6 miles to the parking lot. \nFrom the 101 Freeway in Camarillo\, take exit 52 onto Santa Rosa Road and drive northeast. SUMMARY:Rancho Sierra Vista\, Peace\, Love\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:This is an alternative (and probably slower) hike than Steve Johnson posted for Thursday. We will start in the parking lot of SMMNRA and can go up to the monument if it is dry\, but if it has rained\, we can just go down the asphalt to the picnic tables. If it is raining\, however\, I will cancel. We will take this hike at a gentler pace and we will take some breaks to let slower hikers catch up. It is an out and back\, however\, and you can go at your own pace. \nWe will start in the parking lot at Rancho Sierra Vista and head up to the monument.\nThis out and back hike is about 6 miles with 1100 feet of elevation gain. The hike will start in SMMNRA. Dogs are not permitted in State Park wilderness areas. \nPlease bring ample hydration. There is poison oak at the Monument; if you don’t know what it looks like\, stay on the paths and don’t stray into the woods. \nNote: We will meet at the Rancho Sierra Vista paved parking lot. Meet near the bathrooms. SUMMARY:It Never Rains in Southern California #1
DESCRIPTION:Come explore the East side\, where it never rains until it pours. This urban hike is 5 miles and winds through stairs\, streets\, sidewalks\, and dirt paths over three Silver Lake hills. It includes two separate loops that each start and end at Silver Lake Meadows. The hike covers a range of local topics including the history of water\, infrastructure\, protected habitat\, mid-century modern architecture\, movie studios\, immigration and LGBTQ history. We will also describe the Sierra Club Wilderness Travel Course. Learn more about the class during this hike! Class starts in January 2024 – register now before the class fills up. More info at: https://www.wildernesstravelcourse.org.\nThe three hills are each a 600-700 foot elevation gain on stairs for a combined total gain of 1\,900 feet. The hike starts at the Silver Lake Meadows\, just across the street from the Neutra VDL House at 2300 Silver Lake Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90039. There is free street parking along Silver Lake Boulevard across from the reservoir and on Armstrong Avenue\, off of Silver Lake Blvd. The best option is to find parking on the east side of Silver Lake Boulevard before you reach 2300 Silver Lake Boulevard. Cross at the cross walk with a traffic light in front of the VDL House.\nThere are no restrooms at Silver Lake Meadows. The closest restrooms are located on Glendale Boulevard at Starbucks (2560 Glendale)\, Astro Diner (2300 Fletcher)\, Modern Eats (2590 Glendale)\, Gingergrass (2396 Glendale) and Red Lion Tavern (2366 Glendale). The Silver Lake Recreation Center and The Silver Lake Branch Library are closed in the evenings.\nYou can bring well-behaved dogs on leash.\nBring at least 1 liter of water and any snacks to eat while hiking. SUMMARY:November 18 Conejo Fall Trail Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Come and join your COSCA and COSF friends to fix up some of Conejo Valley’s most popular trails in Wildwood Park! \nThe work will be on the Stagecoach Bluff Trail in Wildwood Regional Park\, fixing ruts. Monthly work days are organized by the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency (COSCA)\, with support from COSF. \nMeet at the main Wildwood Parking area at the corner of Avenida De Los Arboles and Big Sky Drive. You should arrive a few minutes early to take care of registration details. \nIn order to participate\, you will need to sign up online. The work will be done under the guidance of COSCA rangers. \nAs always\, prepare and dress appropriately for trail work. \n\nWear solid boots with good lug soles to keep your grip on a possibly slippery trail. Absolutely no sandals or flip-flops!\nBring lots of water! It can be hot and there may not be any shade\nBring a hat\, work gloves and sunglasses or other eye protection\nLong-sleeved shirts and long pants are strongly recommended\nUse sunblock on exposed skin\nLeave your 4-legged friends at home\n\nNo experience is necessary. SUMMARY:Rockhouse Canyon Anza Borrego
DESCRIPTION:Overnight trip up Rockhouse Canyon\nDid this last year and found the spring! Hike up Rockhouse Canyon to a wonderful campsite among the cottonwoods. \nDescription from Afoot and Afield:\nRockhouse Canyon and the broad\, sloping alluvial basin drained by it-informally known as Rockhouse Valley -constitute one of Southern California’s truly forgotten places. Prior to the 20th century\, Cahuilla Indian villages thrived here. After the Cahuilla moved to the nearby Santa Rosa Indian Reservation around 1900\, a few hardy prospectors made forays into the area\, traveling along the ancient footpaths and\, in some cases\, living in the old rock houses built by the Cahuilla. Today\, there is\nstill no road beyond the lower reaches of Rockhouse Canyon. The closest inhabited place is several miles away. \nTrack from last year\nSpring location\nI plan on camping somewhere in Clark Valley on Friday night. Then on Saturday morning we can caravan to the trailhead. The road to the trailhead is rough\, last year a Subaru Outback was able to get 2.5 miles from the end of the road and my Lexus GX was able to get to 1.5 miles. I don’t know what the condition of the road is this year. SUMMARY:Spahn Ranch - Stagecoach Rd - Corriganville - Rock House - El Camino Nuevo Loop
DESCRIPTION:Our hike will be steeped in local history and lore. We’ll begin our trek at the top of the Old Stagecoach Rd and venture west through Twilight Canyon to Corriganville. After a little site-seeing and a loop around Corriganville we’ll head up a hill to the 118 and cross under it using the wildlife corridor. From there we’ll take a seldom-used trail to the fork at the Hummingbird Trail and Rocky Peak Trails. We’ll visit the Rock House and have our snack break. \nWe’ll continue the loop by heading down Rocky Peak Rd and catch the El Camino Nuevo which will bring us to the Spahn Ranch. And then its back to The Old Stagecoach Rd \nEnjoy the history lessons below 🙂 \nThe Spahn Ranch \nThe ranch took its name from dairy farmer George Spahn\, who purchased the property in 1948. Many western-themed movies and television shows were filmed on the ranch\, including Duel in the Sun (1946) and television episodes of Bonanza\, The Lone Ranger\, and Zorro. It was also the filming location for the B-movie The Creeping Terror. \nThe Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers\, the “Manson Family\,” for much of 1968 and 1969. George Spahn died on September 22\, 1974\, and is buried in Eternal Valley Memorial Park in nearby Newhall\, California. \nThe Rock House \nThe rock house is a small room under a rock overhang. It was built as part of a movie set. Across the trail from the rock house is a natural cave above the road. Rumor has it that an entire family lived there at one time. From 1937 to 1965 Corriganville Movie Ranch\, owned by stuntman Ray “Crash” Corrigan\, was a working film studio and movie ranch for outdoor location shooting. In 1949\, it opened to the public on weekends and holidays. \nIn 1965 Ray Corrigan sold the property to Bob Hope. A housing subdivision called Hopetown was developed and built on a parcel near the park entrance. In the late 1960s and early 1970s part of the site was used for motorcycle racing. In 1970 the ranch was swept by fire. It provided an inland route between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara that was shorter than the coastal route. The first overland stagecoach to use the pass made its run between San Francisco and Los Angeles on April 6\, 1861. We’ll be starting and ending our loop hike at the top of the Devils Slide segment and hiking along the Twilight Canyon section \nDescending into Twilight Canyon \nhttp://photos4.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/4/c/8/highres_19966280.jpeg \nEl Camino Nuevo \nMore appropriately known as the Chatsworth Grade Road it replaced the stagecoach route in 1895 and provided an easier and smoother route to transport goods. It was also able to accommodate motorized vehicles. We’ll be hiking along this old grade which was replaced by our familiar Old Santa Susana Pass in 1917. \nThe Santa Susana Wildlife Corridor \nThis wildlife corridor under the 118 helps provide a vital linkage between the Santa Susana Mountains and the Santa Monica Mountains. Please read the written directions. \nPlease post in the comments if you will bring a fire wood bundle as your pot luck item. \nFirewood (no construction wood please):\n{ to be filled as people volunteer } \nThe Hike. 2 – 3:30p.\nThis hike is on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners are welcome\, but if it gets too hard\, they can always turn around and go back the way we came. Nearly all of the elevation gain is in the first half. \nThis is a social hike. The event host will be moving slowly and stopping at various points to let people catch up. Those that wish to move ahead at a faster pace\, are welcome to do so if they know the route\, but are on their own regarding navigation. \nMeet at the Sycamore Canyon Trail head inside of Sycamore Canyon Campground\, across from Sycamore Cove beach. \nFrom the trailhead\, we head up a mostly flat trail for about a 1/2 mile. Left onto the Overlook Trail\, climbing 400′ over the next mile. It ends\, and we turn left. We follow the ridge for about 1/2 mile\, with about 200′ of loss and 100′ of gain. \nFor return\, we follow our tracks back to the scenic trail\, turn right\, and follow it down for 3/4 mile\, again reaching Big Sycamore Canyon Trail\, and turning right back to our starting point. \nThe Beach Party. 4 – 9:30p. Cars have to be gone by 10p.\nWe’ll go back to our cars and gather up our things for the beach party. From the trail head\, it’s about 1/4 mile to the camp ground parking lot\, then another 1/4 mile to the beach party area across the road at Sycamore Cove Beach. There are picnic tables and fire pits\, but we must supply our own wood to burn. There is wood for sale at the camp ground across the street. \nIf your pot luck item requires utensils\, please bring them. \nThe fire pits on the beach are first come\, first serve. SUMMARY:Hike at Caspers Wilderness Park - Bell Canyon + Oso Trail
DESCRIPTION:The hike I am planning is around 6.3 miles with about 700 ft. of elevation gain. It starts at the very end of the paved road\, the long gray strip that can be seen on the map. \nWe will begin at the Bell Canyon Trail head. We will continue onto that and then take it to the Cougar Pass trail. We will go up that and make a left on Oso Trail. Once that ends\, we will come back down Bell Canyon Trail until we hit Star Ridge Trail. We will take this to West Ridge Trail and go left. This will take us to a single track trail\, Dick Loskorn Trail. This hits Nature Loops Trail and this will take us back to the beginning. \nThis is a beautiful hike with expansive views. DESCRIPTION:3.0 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy-intermediate. \nLet’s enjoy the fun potluck hike after the rain!\nPlease bring warm clothes. It can be very windy and cold at the top. \nThis is a potluck hike. Please bring food and/or drinks to share. If your item requires utensils/plates/toothpicks\, etc.\, please bring them. You may wish to bring your own cup\, plate\, and utensils in case there aren’t any. \nThis hike is rated easy-intermediate because it is a continuous incline for 1.5 miles. This isn’t real steep\, but it is continuous\, and many beginner hikers have indicated this should be rated intermediate. \nThat said\, there is no reason a fit beginner cannot complete this hike. If needed\, just stop and rest along the way\, even if it’s every 50 steps. This is not a conditioning hike\, it is a social hike\, and you really can’t get lost. \nThe only junction is 200 yards before the top\, where we’ll turn right to complete the climb. \nAt the top\, there is a picnic table and 360 degree incredible views that are especially wonderful at night. We’ll have a snack-share social event at the top for 30-60 minutes before heading back the way we came. Please bring some food and drink to share\, and utensils of your item requires it. \nThe top has been known to sometimes be very cool and windy. Please bring something to put on in case it is that way at the top. \nInteresting Notes \nTree Tobacco\nThe Cahuilla Indians used the leaves interchangeably with other tobacco species in hunting rituals and as a poultice to treat swellings\, bruises\, cuts\, wounds\, boils\, sores\, inflamed throat\, and swollen glands. It does not contain nicotine. \nIt contains anabasine\, a similar compound\, which is highly toxic to humans and animals. It is more toxic than nicotine. Ingestion of the leaves can be fatal. It is being investigated for use as a biofuel. All parts of this plant are toxic. Used as an insecticide. Do not smoke. \nElderberry\nThe blue or purple berries are gathered and made into elderberry wine\, jam\, syrup\, and pies. The entire flower cluster can be dipped in batter and fried while petals can be eaten raw or made into a fragrant and tasty tea. Spit out the seeds. Elderflower water is also used in perfumes and sweets. \nMost agree that they do need to be cooked if you are going to eat more than just a few out of hand. That’s because they have a small amount of cyanide producing glycosides\, which are released upon digestion. Fully ripe black berries are not toxic and you can eat as many as you like. This will take us up to Santiago Ranch Road to Cactus Hill. We will take a short break at Four Corners. Then we will come down Whiting Road. DESCRIPTION:Join us on a pre-turkey trot up the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Trail. We’ll turn back around the Guadalasca Trail intersection. We’ll enjoy beautiful ocean views as we descend. We’ll pick up about 1500’ gain on this 8 mile adventure. \nLying along the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean at the west end of Malibu (just shy of Port Hueneme)\, the swelling blue ocean is rivaled in beauty by the undulating native California grasslands. On a clear day\, the Channel Islands are easily within sight. Most of the trail is exposed\, so sunscreen is highly recommended and plenty of water. Mosquito season should be over so it’s up to you whether you should bring bug repellent. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot near the Ray Miller Trailhead (look for the brilliant yellow sign). SUMMARY:Rocky Peak Modified - Easy Intermediate or Fit Beginner
DESCRIPTION:4 miles\, 950′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\n2 miles\, 550′\, Fit Beginner \nThis is a modified version of the famous Rocky Peak hike. It gives those that want something easier\, a chance to climb one of the most well known trails in Simi Valley. \nIt contains beautiful sandstone formations throughout the hike and there are fantastic views of the valleys. There is really no way to get lost because there are no junctions. If one chooses\, they can turn around and return to the beginning at any point during this climb. \nThe beginning contains continuous and somewhat steep incline of about 1000 steps. It’s a fire road\, so it’s not steeper than a truck can climb. Still\, beginners will find this short climb to be exhausting. There is nothing wrong with taking short breaks and doing it slowly\, as there will be plenty of time. \nAfter 1 mile\, we’ll arrive at the Hummingbird trail and bench. This is where we’ll have a social event. Those that have had enough\, should wait for 30-45 min. unltil the others that went further\, return\, and can explore the various rock formations there: at least two caves along the edge of the trail within a few hundred feet. \nAdditional Segment\nThose that want something extra will continue for 1 more mile\, and just after the final and steep ascent to the top\, there will be a junction off to the right. They’ll turn around and return to the bench. Those proceeding with this segment can do all or part of it. \nAt the bench\, we’ll share snacks and beverages\, enjoy the views\, and engage in social interaction for about a hour before returning the way we came. \nIt can get windy and cool in the evening\, so I would recommend bringing something light to put on. \nInteresting Notes:\nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nCalifornia Sagebrush\nAromatic when crushed. AKA\, common sage\, coastal sage. Sunflower family. Cowboys used to ride through it and brush up against the pine-shaped leaves\, coming home with the smell on their clothes and giving rise to the nickname “Cowboy Cologne.” Not a true sage. Can be used as a cooking spice and can be made into a tea. Tear off some needles by running your hand up the stalk and smell the aroma. \nPurple Sage\nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. DESCRIPTION:OPT OUTSIDE WITH WTC! Big Cienega-Mt. Islip (8250′)-Windy Gap Loop. Hike to the Angeles high country peak Mt. Islip from Crystal Lake Campground via the Big Cienega Trail. We’ll make a loop out of it by returning over Windy Gap. Mt. Islip was named for Canadian prospector George Islip and once had a lookout tower and stone cabin on its summit. The tower footings and cabin walls are still there. This moderate hike is 7.2 miles with 2400 feet of gain. Bring hiking footwear\, at least two liters of water\, lunch\, snacks\, hat\, sunblock and layers. A day pass ($5) or National Forest Adventure Pass is required to park at the trailhead. Leaders will provide an overview of the Wilderness Travel Course (WTC)\, which begins January 2024 (www.wildernesstravelcourse.org). Subjects include safe mountain travel\, map & compass and wilderness first aid. This backcountry outing requires a completed Local Outing Medical Form to be reviewed by the Leader prior to the hike. SUMMARY:Post-Thanksgiving hike: Wildwood Central Park ~ Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is\, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs\, cacti-filled desert environs\, volcanic rock\, riparian forest\, and a cool\, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along with a long creek\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, and wildflowers throughout. Wildwood’s archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman\, Gunsmoke\, and Wagon Train back in the day\, as well as the movie Spartacus. We will start at Moonridge Trail and pass through various trails with bridges\, waterfalls\, crossing streams and tree canopies over approximately 5-6 miles with about a 1000’ elevation gain/loss. \nDirections:\nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. SUMMARY:Hike at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park - Nix Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing will be around 5 miles long with 875 ft. of elevation gain. This will be a loop starting at the parking lot of Nix Nature Center. As you will see on the map\, this is at the main park entrance off of the 133 (Little Sycamore Canyon Staging Area). Please reference the map for a detailed location as there aren’t many streets to list for directions. \nThe hike we will be doing will start on the Little Sycamore Canyon Trail. Then we will turn left onto the Serrano Ridge Trail\, then another left onto the Camarillo Canyon Trail. DESCRIPTION:The hike we will be doing is approximately 5 miles with 870 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe will begin at the Live Oak Trail trailhead. This is where you will see on the map that the Live Oak Trail hits the paved road. This is the parking lot closest to the Edna Spaulding Trail. (There should also be someone at the gate when you come in that can direct you where to go.) \nWe start by going up Live Oak Trail and up Vista Trail. We will take back Hoffman Homestead Trail\, Coyote Trail\, and back to Live Oak. SUMMARY:Hike at Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park - Borrego Trail & Billy Goat Trail
DESCRIPTION:The total mileage for this hike is 5 miles with about 800 ft. of elevation gain. \nWe will start at the trail head of the Borrego Trail\, which is right off of the parking lot. This is where we will meet. We will head up the Borrego Trail until we get to Mustard Road. Here we will turn right. Then we will get onto the Billy Goat Trail. Once that ends\, we will turn right to go on Whiting Spur Road. When we get down to Four Corners\, we will head back on Mustard Road to Borrego Canyon. SUMMARY:Gold Canyon Trail to Wildwood Park
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts at 8:30 am to beat the heat from Gold Canyon Trail to Wildwood Canyon Trail. It will pass through various trails with a long creek\, crossing streams and bridges\, Indian caves\, volcanic rock cliffs\, water falls\, cacti-filled desert environs\, riparian forest\, and wildflowers. Highlights of the hike include waterfalls incorporating 40’ Paradise waterfalls along tree canopies over approximately 5 miles with about 800’ of elevation gain/loss. \nDirections: \nFrom the 101 in Thousand Oaks\, turn north on Lynn Road and continue to Avenida De Los Arboles\, then turn left. Continue for about a half mile to Velarde Dr.( next to Wildwood Elementary School) and turn left and then turn left again at San Velarde Circle. \nFrom the 118\, travel west to the 23\, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. SUMMARY:Chumash Trail to Rocky Peak/Triangle
DESCRIPTION:Today we will hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley\, and turn left at the top to the “Triangle” as Barbara calls it. The hike will be an out and back\, and will be 7.7 miles with 1600 ft gain. It’s a nice mostly single track trail during the first climb with pretty views of the hills around. The final mile or so to the turn-around is fire-road. \nWe recommend you use poles as the Chumash Trail has some rocks on it. \nDirections: put “Chumash Park and Trail” into your chosen map service. We will park on Flanagan Drive or thereabout. SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Tar Pits - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:5.4 miles\, 1050′ gain\, Easy Intermediate\nThis hike is one of the most beautiful hikes in Simi Valley. There are 3 extended inclines\, about 1000 steps each\, on fire road. They are not especially steep\, but they do continue for some time\, which is why it is rated “Easy Intermediate.” There are also several small hills of 100 steps or less. \nThe extended inclines will get the blood pumping during this lollipop hike. We’ll be moving through the famous Tapo Canyon and visiting natural tar pits that bubble up from the ground. \nThe first pit is really a puddle that looks like someone spilled a couple 55-gallon drums of tar that was later contained using a spill rope. The next two are a little larger\, again\, contained by spill ropes to keep the sticky black tar from getting on the trail. You will see dinosaurs and sometimes body parts\, and I’m not kidding. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll start on a leisurely stroll for about 0.6 miles\, followed by a steady climb for the next mile\, completing the first extended incline. \nWe’ll turn left at the junction\, climb a small hill of a couple hundred steps\, and then head down for 1.5 miles. \nWe’ll make a right turn down a smaller trail and go for about 100 yards until we reach the tar pits. After looking around for a bit\, we’ll head back\, and after 0.25 miles\, we’ll come to another junction where we will stop and share snacks and beverages. \nFor the return\, we’ll turn left and there will be a steady climb for about 3/4 of a mile to another junction. We’ll turn left again and return down for about 1.4 miles to complete the lollipop. \nEasy option (no host): 3 miles\, 300′ gain.\nPark at 5079 Westwood St\, Simi Valley\, CA 93063. Follow Cottonwood Dr/Yosemite Ave south (down) 1000′ to the trailhead. Enter and turn immediately left. After 350′\, there is a split. It doesn’t matter which you take. The right (upper) is single-track\, the left (lower) is fire road. After ½ mile\, the two trails merge into the fire road. After 600′\, you arrive at the tar pits. Keep going another 600′\, left at the dead end\, and 1/3rd mile to the social event location. Areas of sand\, gravel\, and rock\, some of it rugged.\nTrail Variations:\nSeveral extended inclines of 1000 steps.\nSeveral steep sections of 300 steps\, but no hands required.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: No\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \nWhat to bring:\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nHosting \nRoute: The host knows the route.\nNavigation: Host memory\, enhanced by GPS navigation as needed.\nHike type: Social. \nStops:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point\, which we will pass\, and then return to after seeing the tar pits. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. SUMMARY:Rosewood Trail: Lynn to Angel Vista - Gentler Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Rosewood sign\, which is on the Regal Oak Ct. and Lynn Rd. intersection. The hike is about 5 miles with an elevation gain/loss approximately 900’. \nWe’ll walk a short distance on Lynn road to the lower Rosewood Trail\, then take the dirt trail up a shaded ravine and continue on the Rosewood trail to the Angel Vista peak. \nRosewood trail presents a clear view over the 101 Freeway carving up the Conejo Valley. This is a preview of the panorama to come at Angel Vista\, and the view grows larger as you hike higher up the mountain. SUMMARY:Easy Hike: Paramount Ranch Raceway
DESCRIPTION:Another HWD Original!\nMany of you know Paramount Ranch for its Western Town filming set (destroyed by the Woolsey fire). But did you know that during the 1950s it was home to a world-class race track? The broken sections of asphalt that twist through the eucalyptus trees and around the old Western Town was in fact an official racecourse with international prestige! \nClick here for a cool video \nTrack History \nThe 2-mile Paramount Ranch Raceway opened for its first event over the weekend of August 18th and 19th 1956. Among the notable names competing were Dan Gurney\, Lance Reventlow\, Ritchie Ginther and Bob Bondurant\, who made up a more than 350-strong entry list of drivers across a variety of categories. \nIt was a narrow and twisting course with ups and downs. Due to many accidents and tragedies the track closed 7 races and 18 months later. After closure it was used for the next several years by Paramount for filming movies. \nMovie History \nThe track was used for filming many movies\, including 1957’s “Devil’s Hairpin”\, “Roadracers” (1959) and “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini” (1965). Perhaps the most famous depiction of the circuit on the big screen came during 1965’s ‘Spin Out‘\, notable for starring Elvis Presley. Cameos also followed with 1966’s ‘Munster Go Home‘\, ‘The Love Bug‘ (1968) and its sequel\, ‘Herbie Rides Again’\, in 1974. \nHike will be 3-4 miles with 200′-400′ total ascent and rated EASY. Follow Kanan\, turn left on Cornell Way\, bear right onto Cornell Road for about 3 blocks. Turn right at the main gate to Paramount Ranch. \nFrom PCH turn north onto Kanan for 6 miles then turn right onto Mulholland. After 5.5 miles turn left onto Cornell Rd. Turn left into Paramount Ranch \nWHEN YOU ENTER PARAMOUNT RANCH GO TO THE END OF THE ENTRANCE ROAD (YOU’LL SEE IT AS YOU TURN IN) AND TURN LEFT (you’ll be driving on racetrack straightaway) .
