SUMMARY:Vasquez Rocks in Antelope Valley
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP? Go to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \n**High winds\, heavy rain\, and hot weather will cancel this hike.** \nThis is a slow paced\, stress free\, social hike\, at 5 miles with an elevation gain of about 554’. We hike together as a team and leave no one behind. \nWere trekkin’ Vasquez Rocks and the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail)\, located in the high desert near Agua Dulce Springs\, where numerous movies\, commercials\, music videos and TV shows were filmed\, such as my favorite when Star Trek’s Captain Kirk battled the lizard “Gorn.” [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCarQr_Z2s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCarQr_Z2s). The park features spectacular angled\, jagged red rock formations. Vasquez got its name after one of California’s most notorious bandits\, Tiburcio Vasquez\, in 1874 he used these rocks to elude capture by law enforcement. \nWe will meet at the visitor’s center at 9:15am with a start time precisely at 9:30am. \nIf there are not parking spots available at the visitor’s center\, keep driving down to the dirt parking lots\, you’ll find more room there. Please arrive earlier\, or after the hike if you’d like to walk through the visitor center (hours: 8-4) and learn more about the geology of this area. \nThere are restrooms and a water fountain at the Visitor’s Center. \nFrom the visitor’s center we will make our way to the famous rock formations and take some time to explore and climb them. I will point out where Captain Kirk and the Gorn stood and take our group picture there. \nWe will head to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and descend down into the canyons\, to the wildlife tunnel that crosses below Highway 14. We will go through the tunnel and enjoy the scenery before turning around. Back at the canyons\, we will take a break for snacks/lunch and do a little exploring. After our break\, we will ascend above the rocks (most of the elevation gain is here)\, and make our way back to the visitor center. \nBring 2 liters of water\, snacks/lunch\, sunscreen\, hats\nWear good hiking shoes/boots \n* Distance: 5 miles\, loop in the shape of a kite\, see trail map in the photo gallery.\n* Time: 9:15 – 12:30.\n* Elevation Gain: about 554′\n* Difficulty: Fit beginner/intermediate\n* Dogs: Leashed\, per State law\n* Restrooms: At the Park Center\n* Water Fountain: At the Park Center\n* Parking: Free in the parking lot\n* Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes\, slip-‘n-fall. \n**ADDRESS**\nVasquez Rocks Natural Area Park\n10700 Escondido Canyon Rd\, Agua Dulce\, CA 91350 \nGoogle Coordinates: 34.489195\, -118.320966\nGoogle Map: https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B029’21.1%22N+118%C2%B019’15.5%22W/@34.4891994\,-118.3231547\,921m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x5cc23f9f2166eb15!8m2!3d34.489195!4d-118.320966?hl=en&authuser=0 \n**DRIVING DIRECTIONS** \n* Head north on I-5 toward Santa Clarita valley.\n* Take exit 162 for State Route 14 North (Antelope Freeway) going toward Lancaster/Palmdale.\n* At about 14.3 miles take exit 15 for Agua Dulce Canyon Road\n* continue about 5 minutes to the Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park.

SUMMARY:Ventura Spring Wine Walk
DESCRIPTION:Many of us from this group will attend this event. In the past\, the Ventura Wine Walks have been a really incredible time! \nThis time\, I don’t recommend buying tickets. Instead\, buy what you want to eat and/or drink as needed at various businesses\, or bring you own (fastest and least expensive). \nIf you do want to buy tickets\, here’s a link:\nhttps://cbfproductions.ticketspice.com/spring-wine-walk-2022?utm_source=Master+List+03%2F20&utm_campaign=087c53d8cd-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_02_09_06_58_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bbbffeddc7-087c53d8cd-455226056&mc_cid=087c53d8cd&mc_eid=541bf20b05 \nThe Ventura Spring Wine Walk & Vendor Fair will once again return to beautiful Ventura on Saturday\, April 9\, 2022! \nThis beautiful Spring day in Ventura will kick off with the FREE Vendor Fair from 11am-6:30pm in Downtown Ventura from the Museum of Ventura County through the 600 block of Main Street with vendors and live entertainment. Shop artists\, crafters\, non-profit organizations\, commercial and food vendors. The street fair and entertainment is FREE and open to the public starting at Noon! \nTHE WINE WALK: 3pm – 6pm \nAt 3 pm\, the Ventura Spring Wine Walk gets started! The Wine Walk will showcase Wineries and Breweries in your favorite Downtown businesses. Each guest will receive a tasting cup and a map of the participating tasting sites in Downtown Ventura. \nEach tasting site will have a designated area set up for Wine Walk guests to sample the amazing wines or beers! Wine tasting will end at 6:00 pm. \nAs you stroll down Main Street you will be surrounded by a warm Spring ambiance of live entertainment and hundreds of local vendors. Space Is Very Limited and this event Sells Out Every year…Get Your Tickets Today! \n4pm\nWinchesters Grill and Saloon\n632 E Main St.\nVentura\, CA 93001 \nParking can be tricky\, and you may need to walk several blocks. I recommend adding 1/2 hour for parking and walking to our meet point. \nThe event time is set for 3p\, but we’ll meet at 4p. That will give people time to check-in if they bought a ticket\, because the check-in process can take 1/2 hr.

SUMMARY:Rocky Peak Trail to the Peak
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/rocky-peak-summit-trail \nHello fellow Hikes\,\nThis is my favorite local hike. This has the perfect amount of elevation gain with views to make this a great hike. Not a long trail so you can get in a great workout and still go and enjoy the rest of your day. This trail is a nice wide trail that starts to cimb from the parking lot. It continues with both inclines and level sections until you begin your finish climb to the top. Once you have reached the top we will veer off the main trail to a side trail that will take to the actual peak of Rocky Peak. Where we will be rewarded with a peak marker a register box and some beautiful views… I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, stats and photos….The AllTrails link is not to the summit so the trail miles and elevation is listed below…https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/rocky-peak-summit-trail \nTrail out and back\nRated moderate\nMileage 5.9\nElevation gain 1368\nDogs are able to use this trail but there is a scramble to the peak\nParking free dirt lot and road side \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early. \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n1. Hike your own hike\n2. Please stop at every junction and split to wait for others to catch up \nPlease remember to bring your face covering and all essentials you’ll need for a hike. \nAnd last….The Organizer\, Assistant Organizer and Event host in this group are not professional guides. The function of the organizer is only to organize the trip. Each person who signs up for a Event is responsible for his or her own safety and the safety of his or her guest. Remember this is your hike all responsibilities are of your own once you attend please be aware of your limits.

SUMMARY:Mt. McCoy - Cross Lit Hike
DESCRIPTION:Easy Intermediate\, 3 miles\, 700′ gain. \nA special treat: The cross will be lit! The Rotary Club lights the cross for the week from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the northeast corner of Madera and Royal\, just south of the Donut Delite\, on the east side of the Clinicas office. We’ll walk from there to the trailhead at 2 Washburn St. where it meets Los Amigos Ave. \nOther groups may be doing this same hike starting at other times\, but we’ll start at 6:30p. Sunset time is 7:24p\, so our hike up will be in daylight and we should be arriving near sunset. \nThe Hike: \nWhile I rate this hike “Easy end of the Intermediate Spectrum” due to the 1 mile continuous incline that can get exhausting\, a fit beginner can easily complete it. \nWe cross Madera and continue through the neighborhood for about 1500′\, to the intersection of Washburn St. and Los Amigos Ave (https://www.google.com/maps/place/2+Washburn+St\,+Simi+Valley\,+CA+93065/@34.2645734\,-118.8010877\,18z/data=%213m1%214b1%214m5%213m4%211s0x80e82ee581e79e9f:0x42c324cfa0d16fd2%218m2%213d34.2645585%214d-118.7999842). Then we enter a path behind the houses and proceed for 250′ to the entrance. So far\, there will have been very little elevation gain. \nWe’ll enter a series of switchbacks (zig-zag trail) for 1.2 miles to a large cross at the top. This is a steady climb across the face of the hill\, always in full view of the neighborhood below. Beginners may find this climb difficult to continue at a fast pace. There is nothing wrong with slowing down while faster hikers move ahead\, or resting for a minute several times during this climb. \nIt may seem easy to get lost because there are many different cross-paths up the face of this hill\, but they all lead to the same place. Generally\, whenever there is a choice of “left or right”\, we take the easier and more worn path. If you happen to find yourself alone and take a wrong turn (aka steep cut)\, all paths lead up. \nAt the top by the cross\, we’ll enjoy the gorgeous 360 degree views and share beverages and/or snacks (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nInteresting Notes \nHere are a couple plants you are sure to see on this hike: \nBlack Sage \nMultiple brown buttons going up the top of the stalk\, that may have white flowers. Green leaves. Purple or white flowers that are dark brown as they dry on the plant. Squish the leaves and smell. \nA rare and sought after Black sage honey is also made from the honey of bees that pollinate the Black sage plant. Black sage is utilized in the culinary world as an aromatic and flavorful herb. It can be used in recipes wherever traditional sage is called for\, however keep in mind that foraged Black sage has a much stronger flavor than that of traditional store bought sage. \nIts flavor goes well with winter squashes\, brown butter\, poultry\, venison\, pears\, cheese\, potatoes and other herbs such as rosemary and thyme. Use fresh in a variety of different preparations or leaves. Can be dried and stored for future use as a dried herb. Black sage was used traditionally by Native Americans known as the Chumash people to form an herbal soak for the bath to be used in the treatment of bodily pain\, specifically for the feet and lower legs. \nPurple Sage \nGrey-green leaves. Aromatic when crushed. Purple flowers. Aka\, Tobacco Sage\, with mild hallucinogenic properties when smoked. Can be used as a spice or made into a tea. Tea has medicinal affects: Antiviral\, gargle for sore throats\, reduce hay fever symptoms and other drying actions. \nDistance: 3 miles (round trip)\nElevation Gain: 700′\nDifficulty: Easy Intermediate (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)\nDuration: 3 1/2 hours\nPace: 2.0 mph\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes – at nearby places of business\nDrinking Fountains: Yes – at nearby places of business\nParking: Free\nTrail: Mostly single-track\, excellent condition\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK. \nWhat to Bring:\n1-2 liters of water.\nSnacks and/or beverages to share (https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772).\nHiking shoes preferred\, but athletic shoes will be OK.\nFlashlight or headlamp. \nDisclaimer / Release of Liability:\nhttps://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/

SUMMARY:Kennedy Ridge Trail Exploratory (Ojai)
DESCRIPTION:## Details \nBEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO.\nNEED HELP:\ngo to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nCome and join me on this exploratory within the Santa Ynez mountains. I’ve hiked this trail many times in the past\, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve done it and I’ve been dying to see how it has changed over the years. Now is a good time to hike it before the heat. Weather report says it is will be 67 degrees out there in Ojai. The hike will be exposed! So the temperature will be at least ten degrees hotter so I recommend bringing at least 3 liters of water plus plenty of electrolytes. Back in the day I helped cut through this old overgrown forgotten trail along the Kennedy Ridge that reached up a mile over on to the Camino Cielo ridge line. Since then the trail has been cut through four more miles. At the time there were only 4 picnic benches along the way up. Now there are 10! I don’t plan on hiking to all 10 benches\, maybe only to the 5th bench. I don’t plan on making this hike too long either\, maybe 8 miles or less out and back. This will reach us to Camino Cielo ridge and a little beyond a mile or two. The views are great! and some boulders to climb! We will start the hike at the Oso trailhead in the Ventura River Preserve to the actual trailhead Rice Canyon Rd. to the Kennedy Ridge connection and on our way up a mile or so steep up to Camino Cielo.\nMy cell # 805-208-3966 \nMEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: Oso trailhead in the Ventura River Preserve at 8:00 am.\n[https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B027’31.6%22N+119%C2%B017’25.4%22W/@34.458764\,-119.2909502\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x8a7dded77b87d15c!7e2!8m2!3d34.4587638!4d-119.2904011](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B027’31.6%22N+119%C2%B017’25.4%22W/@34.458764\,-119.2909502\,207m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x8a7dded77b87d15c!7e2!8m2!3d34.4587638!4d-119.2904011) \nDISTANCE: 8 miles \nELEVATION GAIN: 2500′

SUMMARY:Natoma Loop - Vanalden Caves - Vanalden Vista
DESCRIPTION:The **Natoma Loop Trail** is a 1.7 mile lightly trafficked loop located in Woodland Hills. But anything less than a couple miles is not worth getting up for so we’ll extend the loop into the cool side of Mulholland and ramble about a network of little-used trails. We’ll visit the **Vanalden Caves** and take a break on **Vanalden Vista.** \n**NOTE**: On our last visit here one of my secret trails was blocked by tree branches and scrub. Since then the HWD trail crew has cleaned it up and trail is now passable. \n*Hike is about 4-5 miles and rated MEDIUM*. See [Hike Rating guide here](https://www.hikingwithdean.com/hike-rating-guide/): \nDirections \nProceed to the south end of Natoma Ave and park on right side of street in dirt lot. \nThe Organizers and members of Hiking With Dean are not professional leaders\, guides\, or mountaineers. SUMMARY:Tapo Canyon Tar Pits - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:**[5.4 miles\, 1050′ gain\, Easy Intermediate](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)** \nThis hike is one of the most beautiful hikes in Simi Valley. There are 3 extended inclines\, about 1000 steps each\, on fire road. They are not especially steep\, but they do continue for some time\, which is why it is rated “Easy Intermediate.” There are also several small hills of 100 steps or less. \nThe extended inclines will get the blood pumping during this lollipop hike. We’ll be moving through the famous Tapo Canyon and visiting natural tar pits that bubble up from the ground. \nThe first pit is really a puddle that looks like someone spilled a couple 55-gallon drums of tar that was later contained using a spill rope. The next two are a little larger\, again\, contained by spill ropes to keep the sticky black tar from getting on the trail. \nFrom the trail head\, we’ll start on a leisurely stroll for about 0.6 miles\, followed by a steady climb for the next mile\, completing the first extended incline. \nWe’ll turn left at the junction\, climb a small hill of a couple hundred steps\, and then head down for 1.5 miles. \nWe’ll make a right turn down a smaller trail and go for about 100 yards until we reach the tar pits. After looking around for a bit\, we’ll head back\, and after 0.25 miles\, we’ll come to another junction where we will stop and [share snacks and beverages](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772). \nFor the return\, we’ll turn left and there will be a steady climb for about 3/4 of a mile to another junction. We’ll turn left again and return down for about 1.4 miles to complete the lollipop. \n**Interesting Notes:** \n*[Yellow Star Thistle](https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/2/0/e/6/highres_501188422.jpeg)* \nThorny. Also called yellow cockspur and golden star thistle. Generally considered a weed. Long-term ingestion by horses causes a neurological disorder known as chewing disease\, a lethal lesion of the nigropallidal region of the brain. This disease is expressed as a twitching of the lips\, tongue flicking\, and involuntary chewing. Permanent brain damage is possible\, and affected horses may starve to death. Used in Turkish folk medicine for the treatment of ulcers. In a laboratory study\, aqueous extracts of fresh or dried flowers of yellow star thistle given orally showed significant antiulcerogenic activity in rats. \n**Directions:** \nTapo Canyon\n3802 Tapo Canyon Road\nSimi Valley\, CA 93063 \n*From the 118:* \nExit 27 Tapo Canyon Rd.\nTapo Canyon Rd. north for 1.7 miles.\nTrail head on the right\, before Lost Canyon Rd.\nParking is free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \n*From CA-23:* \nCA-23 north to CA-118 east.\nCA-118 east for 8.7 miles.\nExit 27 Tapo Canyon Rd.\nTapo Canyon Rd. north (left) for 1.7 miles.\nTrail head on the right.\nParking is free in the gravel area in front of the trail head\, and along the road on both sides. \n**Hike** \nDistance: 5.4 miles\nGain: 1050′\nDistribution: Reasonably well distributed.\nDifficulty: [Easy Intermediate](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)\nShape: Lollipop\, clockwise.\nPace: 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road and double track. This hike will include an extended stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point\, which we will pass\, and then return to after seeing the tar pits. \nWe will stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a large arrow made of baking soda. There may not always be a sweeper designated to be the last hiker. \nEach hiker is responsible for knowing their capability\, only attending events where they are able to sustain the described pace\, for keeping up with the group sufficiently enough to make the turns and not get left behind\, and for making sure the host is notified if they are going to split from the group. \n*Group separation:*\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n[Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions) \n**[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous/)**

SUMMARY:Mount Gleason Trail!
DESCRIPTION:Check out this trail on AllTrails.\nhttps://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mount-gleason-trail \nWe are gonna try this one again….\nOkay all you backpackers and peak baggers this one’s for you. Hiking a little known trail called Mount Gleason. This is a loooong one (18 miles) But the elevation gain is only 3152 which makes this an excellent conditioning hike. Time to weigh down your gear if your looking to train for your backpack adventures or increase your endurance with a longer hike. Or just come along and enjoy a good hike and explore. We will be following the Alltrails map from the start of our hike to the top of Mount Gleason which is more of a fireroad. From there it looks like we may pass close to the old Nike Missile site. We will also pass a memorial for a fallen firefighter. On our way back down we will veer off the trail and connect to the Pacific Crest Trail which we will take all the way back to our cars. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 7: 00am) \nTrail Moderate but long distance\nDogs are allowed but most be conditioned for a longer hike\nTrail length 18 miles\nElevation gain 3152\nOut time is a estimate\nAdventure pass is required parking is free \nI’m gonna to provide the Alltrails link for you so you can check out info on the trails which includes stats directions and photos. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mount-gleason-trail \nPlease remember to bring and all essentials needed for a long hike \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n1. SUMMARY:Strawberry Scramble Loop via Colby Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Scramble lovers only. We’re taking the mountaineers route with about a mile of exposed climbing on the rocks. Limiting to those I’m comfortable climbing with since it will be a full hike and a long day. \nSTATS \nDistance: ~12 miles \nElevation: >3200 \nLevel: 8/10 \nDuration: 6+ hours\, bring snacks and/or lunch \nNOT FOR BEGINNERS! \nNO SWEEP!! \nhttp://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/e/5/d/9/600_448438841.jpeg \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/d/9/7/600_456640343.jpeg \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/d/9/e/600_456640350.jpeg \nhttp://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/9/d/b/4/600_456640372.jpeg \nThe Plan \nWe’ll head up to Strawberry Peak through the scenic Colby Canyon and up the mountaineers route. This is an exposed scramble and not recommended for those not comfortable with this type of terrain. From the peak\, we’ll head down to the Strawberry Peak Trail and loop back around to Colby Canyon. The truck trail is overgrown in spots\, with yucca obstacle courses and also a few poodle dog fields. Other than a couple spots with easily navigate able washouts it’s in pretty good shape though. There will be some short and steep rocky portions throughout the day. Mt Lawlor will also be an option if we the time and inclination. \nWrite up is Don’s: \nThe Story \nStrawberry Peak – 6164 ft. \nStrawberry Peak is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. Just a short drive up Angeles Crest Highway (SR2) from the city of La Cañada. Being so close to the Los Angeles metropolitan area and offering such outstanding hiking opportunities\, Strawberry is understandably very popular. The summit offers wonderful views of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean (although often obscured by smog). And to the north the High Desert and Tehachapi mountains are visible. \nNamed by “some wags at Switzer’s Camp”\, according to Hiram Reid (1886). It is told that they fancied a resemblance to a strawberry standing with its blossom end up. “We named it Strawberry because there weren’t any strawberries on it.” Reid icily noted that “the joke took” and that burlesque name has been commonly used by the old settlers; but the peak name is waiting some worthy occasion for a worthy name . Like many other playful peak names\, few expected the name would last\, but it has-perhaps because Americans have always loved to toy with place names. \nThe first known ascents were by parties led by Ezekiel Simmer from Switzer’s. A trail was built along the Arroyo\, and then up Colby Canyon to the saddle west of the summit\, and then up the Class 3 rock to the top. This was one of the most popular destinations during the first “Great Hiking Era” (1895-1935). It was also climbed and poetically recorded by Saunders (1923). One of this peak’s most curious moments was when a giant gas balloon\, the America crashed on the summit after being caught in a storm. The six men aboard\, including Captain. A. E. Medlin\, spent a freezing night on the mountain but clamored down Colby Canyon to safety the next morning (1909). It was front page news and some sought to rename the peak after Medlin but nothing came of it. \nCalled “Strawberry Peak #1” on original HPS List–there once was a #2 in the San Bernardino N.F. \nDirections: From the 210 Freeway north of Pasadena\, exit at Angeles Crest Hwy (SR 2). Just past the Switzer Falls parking\, you’ll see a turn out on the left at mile marker 34.50. You can park here. If parking is full\, there are a coupe other turnouts if you keep driving up the road. \nCarpooling/Caravaning: A good area to consolidate vehicles is at an area many hikers use just north of the 210 on the 2 fwy. On Angeles Crest Hwy turn right on the second street north of the 210\, Milmada Drive and then take an immediate left on the street that parallels the Angeles Crest. I will leave this location at 7:45. \n**************************\n************************** \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. Bring snacks and drink plenty of liquids when hiking. Check weather conditions and dress accordingly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Watching out for poison oak\, snakes\, ticks\, uneven footing\, spectacular views\, beautiful fauna all while interacting with awesome (usually) fellow hikers can be extremely hazardous\, rewarding and fun. \nThe Farzan Rule: Posted hike times are the time the hike starts or we leave from a posted shuttle location. I’m aware other Meetup groups offer a grace period for late arrivals; we don’t. It’s your responsibility to know the location of the meeting spot and be there and ready to participate at the posted time. If you have any concerns about the directions feel free to contact the organizer of the event\, preferably in advance of the event and not at the start time. I’m of the opinion that it’s not fair to delay an event when the majority of attendees have arrived on-time. (so named after a conversation I had with a certain un-named member) \nRSVP’s: If you RSVP for an event be responsible and update your RSVP if your plans change. If your plans change at the last second and you’re not able to update your RSVP also let us know. In my opinion a no-show is someone who has no regard for following the guidelines we request from our members and will risk being removed from future events that have a limit. \nVHC HIKE RATING SCALE \nRating a hike is subjective\, meaning the difficulty of a hike will be in direct relation to how often you hike and the type of hike you prefer. Keep in mind that any hike can have the following: un-even hiking surfaces\, various obstructions\, water and/or water crossings or bouldering and/or rock hopping. A great hike will have all of these! \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing. You must use your hands at times to hold the terrain or find your route. This may be caused by a combination of boulders\, steepness and extreme terrain. Some Class 3 routes have ropes in place for assistance. \nDISCLAIMER / RELEASE OF LIABILITY \nIMPORTANT\, PLEASE READ BELOW IN ITS ENTIRETY: \nI am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends. \nOutdoor sports and other events we plan can be inherently dangerous and accidents may happen. By participating in any posted event\, you’re taking responsibility for your own safety and well-being. The Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to sign up for any Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup events\, you are releasing the Valencia Hiking Crew Meetup Group and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries as stated in paragraph 6.2 of the Meetup “Terms of Service” located on the bottom of the Meetup website. Your personal safety depends on your own judgment and experience. \n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************\n**************************

SUMMARY:Hill Canyon and the Western Plateau Loop
DESCRIPTION:We began hiking and exploring this area in 2008 when we were the original “Weekday Hikers.” At that time there was a system of old use trails known mainly only to a few local equestrians. It soon became a favorite and regular hiking location for us. \nA few years later\, open space agencies and other trail-builders literally followed in our footsteps and began converting our use trails to official “new” trails\, erected trail signs and built bridges. \nToday we will do my classic loop as depicted in these\nphotos from May 2015: [https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=25919744](https://www.meetup.com/localhikers/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=25919744) \n…about 7 miles and 1500′ gain \nWe’ll take our snack break at the KCLU-FM antenna \n**History of Hill Canyon**\nHill Canyon is part of a system of deeply eroded canyons\, plateaus and ridgelines now known as the Conejo Canyons Open Space. On clear days\, trails in this area afford dramatic views of Ventura and the coastline\, as well as inland to the Topa Topa mountains north of Ojai. This area also conserves a variety of habitats\, including coast live oak woodlands\, riparian habitats\, interior sage scrub/chaparral\, and coastal sage scrub. The hike will be about 8 miles with moderate elevation gain. \nPrior to 2000 plans for high end homes were made to be built on the Western Plateau above Hill Canyon. There were a couple of problems. An access road would be a very expensive addition to the cost of the properties. Fire access requires a separate emergency access which was not feasible without access through city property. A bordering golf course would add to the property values and if done right would provide the emergency access at little cost. A win-win for the developer. No problem. He got city officials to spend about $2.6 million to plan a golf course with the emergency access. \nBut then Audubon members and other environmentalists showed pictures of the flood plain under water after a big rain. The club house would have to be up on the ridge above to be feasible. Golfers would have to be driven down to tee off. The golf course plans got canceled and a land trade was worked out by the same city officials who caused the $2.6 million to be wasted. \n**Directions to trailhead** \nUse Google Map and drive to address. Park in dirt lot at trailhead or on street near corner with Rancho Conejo Blvd \n“If you’re early\, you’re on time. If you’re on time\, you’re late. If you’re late…don’t bother showing up”

SUMMARY:Stage Coach - Andora Trailhead - Easy Intermediate
DESCRIPTION:**[3.5 miles\, 800′ gain\, easy intermediate](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)**\nNote that we start from the Andora trailhead. \nThis hike will include an extended stay at the top\, where we’ll have a [snack share social event]((https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879772) for 30-60 minutes. \nNearly the entire trail is an incline. Fit beginners can complete this hike\, but it will certainly get their blood pumping. \nThere are no super steep sections\, but much of the trail is very rugged\, much like a stair climb. This is not a conditioning hike\, it’s a social hike. We’ll be stopping at various points to let people catch up and to make sure they make any turns. \nThe hike covers a portion of an old stagecoach road that linked LA with San Francisco in the 1860s. You can see holes that were drilled into the rock for chains to help the stagecoaches up the steeper sections\, during which passengers had to get out of the vehicle. \nWe will begin near the intersection of Andora and Valley Circle. We’ll proceed up a rocky trail past a plaque erected in 1939 to commemorate the old stagecoach route\, then we’ll proceed to the top of the pass for a great view overlooking the valley. \nThere are a variety of ways of getting to the same place and there are many different ways of returning. Please follow the host to take the chosen route. The return route may be slightly different than the way up through a parallel path. \n**Hike**\nDistance: 3.5 miles\nGain: 800′\nDistribution: Most of the incline is in the first half.\n[Difficulty](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781): Easy Intermediate.\nShape: Out and Back.\nPace: approx. 2.0 mph.\nTrail Type: Fire road\, double track\, single track.\nTrail Variations: Some parts of the trail is very rugged over large stones.\nDuration: 3.5 hours\nDogs: Yes.\nRestrooms: Yes.\nDrinking Fountains: No.\nParking: Park in the street. \n**What to bring:**\n1 liter of water for every 3 miles.\nHiking shoes/boots. Not required\, but recommended.\nFlashlight or headlamp.\nSunscreen and/or hat as needed. \n**Hosting**\n*Route*: The host has plotted this route but never taken it.\nNavigation: GPS navigation as needed. Several of our members are familiar with the route from this trailhead. \n*Hike type*: Social.\nWe won’t be hiking at a fast pace because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. There is nothing wrong with stopping\, even if it means every 50 steps. \n*Stops*:\nThe host may designate stopping points to let others catch up. This hike will include a stop for a snack and beverage share at the half way point. We’ll stop at junctions to make sure everybody makes any turns or chooses the correct direction at splits\, else something will be used to mark the direction\, usually a marking made of baking soda\, or some sticks on the trail forming an arrow. \n*Group separation*:\nSometimes hikers wish to move significantly ahead and not wait at designated stopping points. Please let the host know. They are on their own regarding route and navigation. \n**Directions**\nStage Coach Trail\, Andora trailhead\n9861 Andora Ave.\nChatsworth\, CA 91311\n34.249626\, -118.619625 \n*From CA-118*\nTopanga Canyon (CA-27) south\, 1.4 mi\nRight (west) on Devonshire St for .4 mi\nLeft (southwest) on Valley Circle for .6 mi\nRight (west) on Lassen for 43 ft.\nLeft (southwest) on Andora for 157 ft. \n**[FAQ](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/23772638/Frequently_Asked_Questions)** \n**[Disclaimer / Release of Liability](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/pages/29622459/Is_Hiking_Dangerous)**

SUMMARY:SANTA BARBARA COASTAL RANGE TREK (THE PLAYGROUND) - A rock scrambling adventure
DESCRIPTION:BEFORE YOU WILL BE MOVED TO THE GOING LIST\, YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR CDH PROFILE (The three questions must be answered with a “yes”) IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO. \nNEED HELP:\ngo to: [https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC](https://wp.me/P9MbG4-hC) \nSANTA BARBARA COAST- SERIES OF HIKES \nJoin me on yet another CDH series as I take on the Santa Barbara Coastal Range. We’ll hike a series of trails we’ve taken before that will be interesting with views of the ocean on most of them. Starting north at Gaviota\, we’ll conclude the series in Montecito. This series is definitely meant to be more visual than physical\, thus\, less conditioning but more of a mental enlightenment. Therefore\, we will hike together as a group and enjoy the beauty that this series offers. \nTHE PLAYGROUND \nThis 5th trek in the Santa Barbara series will take us to The Playground. It’s the name of a large area with many rock towers and subterranean rock formations in the Santa Ynez Mountains of Santa Barbara. It’s about a half mile hike to the Playground with some steep areas along the way. We’ll spend the day exploring all the nooks and crannies this place offers. It’s a must for those that like to explore and rock scramble. Parking is limited in this area\, so it helps to car pool there. The awesome views below of Santa Barbara’s coastline is another reason to come out and enjoy this area with us. After the hike\, you can join me for an optional late lunch debriefing. \nINITIAL MEETUP LOCATION\, DIRECTIONS AND TIME: The Thousand Oaks Park and Ride at the corner of Rancho Rd. and Haaland Dr. NO LATER THAN 7:30 a.m. It’s just south of the 101 Fwy and 23 Fwy interchange. Have a full tank of gas and be willing to drive if needed. Those that don’t drive can help pay for gas. It’s about 1.2 hour’s drive to the trailhead. \nFINAL MEETUP LOCATION AND TIME: The Playground no later than 9:00 a.m. IT’S HARD TO FIND\n[https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B030’04.4%22N+119%C2%B051’48.5%22W/@34.5012141\,-119.8656519\,17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xa0c214df2ad4e802!8m2!3d34.5012141!4d-119.8634632](https://www.google.com/maps/place/34%C2%B030’04.4%22N+119%C2%B051’48.5%22W/@34.5012141\,-119.8656519\,17z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xa0c214df2ad4e802!8m2!3d34.5012141!4d-119.8634632) \nDISTANCE: 4 miles of exploratory rock scrambling around\, over and under huge boulders. \nELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: 1000’/1000′ \nTHE PACE: As fast as the slowest Trekker \nDURATION: 5 hours of ecstasy for our WWW members \nTERRAIN: Single track use trails and lots of rock scrambling \nLEVEL: Intermediate Trekker who loves exploring rock formations \nOPTIONAL LUNCH: After the hike\, I will be debriefing at the Crushcakes and Cafe for lunch\n5392 Hollister Ave\, Goleta\nMENU: [https://www.crushcakes.com/menu/#cafe-lunch](https://www.crushcakes.com/menu/#cafe-lunch) \nMY CELL# IS: 805-358-5972

SUMMARY:Lizard Rock Loop
DESCRIPTION:**[Easy Intermediate\, 4.5 miles\, 600′ gain](https://www.meetup.com/Hiking-Plus/messages/boards/thread/50879781)** \nThis is a unique loop through Wildwood Park that takes us to the famous Lizard Rock. \nThere are several extended inclines and a few short but steep climbs that cause this to be rated on the easy end of the intermediate spectrum. Beginners will still have no problem completing this hike\, but they may be cursing some of the inclines and will not be zooming along on the steps or inclines at high speed. \nThere is nothing wrong with taking it slow because this is a social hike\, not a conditioning hike. We’ll be waiting for folks to catch up at the major junctions\, and I’ll be putting down white arrows so that nobody gets lost if they fall way behind. \nWe’ll be starting from the tennis court parking lot 4 blocks east of the trail head parking lot and across the road. \nWe’ll cross to the park side of the road and turn right (west) for 1 block\, where we’ll see an entrance to the Moonridge trail that runs parallel to the road. We’ll enter and make a right\, following it around past the first set of junctions\, continuing for about 1/4 mile\, and then follow it around to the left instead of taking the stem to the right. \nThis will take has past the steps to the trail head parking lot and continue along the Moonridge trail. We’ll follow it around for another 1/2 mile and make a right at the North Teepee Trail fire road and continue for about 200′. \nNext\, we’ll make a left at the Stagecoach Bluff Trail for about 500′\, where it will dead end at a trail of the same name. We’ll make a left and continue for about 1000′ until it dead ends. SUMMARY:Earl Canyon Road to Mount Lukens
DESCRIPTION:https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/earl-canyon-road-to-mount-lukens-road \nHello Fellow Hikers\,\nLet’s tackle Mount Lukens from a lesser known route. The summit of Mount Lukens is at 5075 ft and the highest point in Los Angeles. The AllTrails map stops at Mount Lukens Road but we are gonna continue another .25 mile to the towers. Which will give us about a 14 mile hike with 3500 elevation gain. This is a pretty mountain view hike with continuous incline. This hike is not suitable for beginners. And expect a great workout. Carpooling at our same meetup spot will be offered for anyone who wishes to carpool (Best donuts located 2325 Kuehner Dr # 127 Simi Valley off the 118 freeway at 7:15) I have attached the AllTrails link for directions\, pics\, and stats…https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/earl-canyon-road-to-mount-lukens-road \nTrail out and back\nMiles about 14\nElevation Gain about 3500 ft\nRated hard not suitable for beginners\nDogs allowed\nParking neighborhood street parking \nAs of now there is no sweeper for this hike so please know if you feel you can not finish for any reason please turn back early \nPlease check back on hike info as rain\, heat advisory\, strong winds or low attendance may cause the hike to be rescheduled \nWe will always follow Jim’s Golden Rules: \n1. SUMMARY:Scramble Loop to Camelback from Haines Canyon
DESCRIPTION:I like finding hikes close to home that aren’t always on other people’s radar. This is the best description of the hike to “Mount Camelback” I’ve found: \nOfficially\, as far as I’ve seen on any map\, there is no such place. The Sunland US Topo map does not list this mountain. Really it’s more part of a ridge than a peak but from certain angles\, it does look like the back of a camel due to its pronounced humps. It has been known by this name by the locals for many decades. Camelback can be aproached most directly from the Haines Debris Basin\, though it is far from a quaint afternoon hike in the hills. \nTHE PLAN \nTHERE IS A VERY STEEP SCRAMBLE RIDGE. Please read the write up and stats before signing up. \nWe will start at Haines Cyn and follow a trail along the foothills that will allow us a bit of a warm up before the fun begins. Three miles in\, we will meet up with the Kill ‘Em Quick trail. Here we will gain over 1000’ of elevation in just one mile. There are about 30 switchbacks that will lead us to a ridge. Be prepared for rock scrambling. The plan is to connect to Camelback – a point we reached last year that has amazing views of the valley and surrounding areas. This is where we’ll take our lunch break before heading down a couple miles of steep trail back to our cars. \nThere will be a couple places to stop\, catch our breath\, take in the views and regroup. \nImportant notes: \nEXPLORATORY \nBUSHWHACKING \nBRING POLES \nMORE WATER THAN YOU THINK YOU’LL NEED \nEXTRA TIME TO FIND PARKING – SEE FARZAN RULE \nVERY\, VERY STEEP \nSTATS \nDistance: 8 Miles \nElevation Gain: 2500 ft \nDuration: 5 hours \nTrail: Fire road and single track\, w/areas of deteriorating trails and steep\, uneven downhills\, possible bushwhacking \nRating: 7/10\, due to trail condition and gain \nParking pass: Not needed \nNot for beginners – no sweep!! We’ll be keeping a moderate pace and regrouping as needed. \nTHE STORY \nA couple of local residents made some cool videos of their crazy adventures. One of them was an exploration of an abandoned detention center and the trail the juvenile detainees maintained as part of their training program: \n“The Kill ‘Em Quick Trail was built by juvenile offenders detained at nearby Camp Routh\, a LA County probation department fire camp\, abandoned in 2009. Camp Routh had a program that trained some of the detainees to fight forest fires. As part of the training requirements\, these detainees had to make it up the ridge in under 30 mins wearing their forest fire gear\, some carrying chainsaws. \n“In one of the abandoned buildings\, there’s an old whiteboard with the Kill ‘Em Quick climber rankings\, a competitive list of times between detainees\, staff and the fire department.” One of the probation officers set the record with a time of just 15 minutes. \nA couple quotes that will let you know what you’re in for: “Is this even a trail?” “This trail won’t last if people don’t use it.” “This trail is gnarly.” Sounds like a VHC hike to me. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom the 210 fwy take the Lowell Ave exit to Honolulu Ave. Go west. It veers right and turns into Tujunga Cyn Blvd. In just over a mile and a half turn right on Haines Cyn Ave. Make a right on Day St and a left to join Haines Cyn again. Though we will be meeting at the very end of Haines\, there isn’t much parking there so grab any available parking spot you see when you’re on Haines or turn left on Apperson St to look for a spot. \nWe will meet at the gate at the end of Haines. Please keep in mind this is a residential neighborhood – keep any noise to a minimum. \n*** Allow yourself a few extra minutes to find parking and walk to the trailhead. \n**************************\n************************** \nThe Fine Print \nPLEASE – Know your limits and abilities. \n1 – A long walk \n2 – 4 mile hike w/little elevation gain \n3 – 5 mile hike w/up to 1000 ft. elevation gain \n4 – 5+ mile hike w/up to 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increases at times) \n5 – 7+ mile hike w/over 1500 ft. elevation gain (heart rate increasing even more at times) \n6 – 7+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be trying to remember how to perform CPR) \n7 – 5+ mile hike w/over 2000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be muttering expletives to yourself) \n8 – 10+ mile hike w/over 3500 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be angry with the hike leader) \n9 – 10+ mile hike w/over 5000 ft. elevation gain (at times you might be thinking of reporting the hike leader to the authorities) \n10 – Use your imagination \nClass 3 Scrambling: Scrambling or un-roped climbing.
